Minthe, Pyros, and how LO treats motherhood.

I wrote a piece on this over on reddit but wanted to make a dedicated post here.

So I'm sure I'm not the only one a little miffed by Episode 212-214's development concerning Minthe. But I feel like there's one thing that has yet to really be mentioned in any of these discussions.

There's this... issue that often arises in stories written about female characters, and it's not one that's exhibited purely by uninformed male writers (like those passages of women looking in the mirror and commenting on their bodies in great, hyperbolic detail, that's absolutely "a man wrote this" energy lol).

The issue I'm getting at specifically is one that seems to come up universally regardless of the gender of the writer, and that's regarding the usage of motherhood and childrearing in media when concerning a female character.

Some women want children. Others don't. Both are valid. But for some reason, it tends to be a trend in media for women who don't want children to still somehow inevitably end up with them, whether it's through adoption or pregnancy, whatever have you. On its own, this might be fine for some stories, you get the character realizing "wow kids aren't actually that bad!" But when it becomes a trend for female characters to constantly "evolve" into characters who like raising children, that's when it starts to become a sort of unrealistic, unhealthy precedent.

I get what Rachel is trying to do here, opening Minthe's flashback with a scene about her mother and how her mother clearly didn't want kids but ended up with one anyways; and then ending it with Minthe, who ALSO didn't want kids but ALSO ended up with them anyways (albeit not biological) but showing the difference in how Minthe handles the situation.

But it's not being done well because it's failing to recognize that 1.) women should be allowed to not want children and not be seen as the villain (disclaimer: this isn't me saying how Minthe's mother treated her is an excuse, if anything I feel like the inclusion of Minthe's mother at this point in time feels very scapegoaty?), and 2.) teaching a preschool class is anything like raising a child as a single mother.

But this mirrors that deeper issue that I mentioned above. That Minthe, a character who didn't want to get married and didn't want to have children, has her character arc resolved by her taking care of children. You see what I'm getting at here? There's this constant trend of women in literature and media "finding their calling" through children. That a woman's character arc can't be considered "complete" until she's had children or "learned to love them."

IDK what Rachel has against moms, but I'm really tired of seeing LO's motherly characters get reduced to overbearing assholes; while characters who are assholes are "fixed" by having children (not just with Minthe, even Hades - it's a common 'defense' I see that "Hades will be better at it when he has his own biological children, how he treated Thanatos has nothing to do with how he'll be as a dad!"🚩🚩🚩) It sets a very weird precedent ESPECIALLY when you remember that Minthe was also someone who was designed with BPD.

The cliffhanger we got a few weeks ago was of Minthe saying she "had something to do" after spotting Demeter. This led us to believe she'd be confronting her. Instead, we get Minthe... going to work to teach nymphs how to write resumes. Honestly, I think people's predictions from that cliffhanger way back would have been far more suitable - have Minthe approach Demeter and talk about her unresolved issues with her mother and all the reflecting she did while in plant form and tie it into Demeter's development and how she views/treats her own daughter. Having her just clearly "moved on" is... fine, but not really as impactful as it could have been to see Minthe ACTUALLY develop beyond her issues besides just telling Thetis to fuck off (for a second time, I might add) and ignoring Hades (as we're led to believe by her choosing to go to work instead of going along with Thetis' crap).

Minthe taking over a classroom of preschoolers does not solve ANY of the pre-established problems she had, it doesn't even begin to address her own insecurities or problems she exhibited from her side of her relationship with Hades. It's just "look! she's gonna be a better mom than her own mom was!" which tells us... what exactly? How is that something that's relevant to Minthe's character arc? How does that feel 'resolved'? Especially considering, again, this is a classroom of kids that are all gonna return to their own homes after the day is done. Maybe Minthe will go on to adopt Pyros, who knows, but even if she does, that's solving a different problem that Minthe doesn't have. A child is not going to "fix" her, none of her character development or conflicts with other characters in the narrative had anything to do with childrearing.

Motherhood should not be the default resolution to a woman's character arc.

En el siglo XV (c. 1460-1475) el capitán portugués Diego da Silva intentó invadir la ciudad de Gáldar (Gran Canaria), por el camino quemó poblados y asesinó a sus habitantes; pero derrotado por los canarios a las puertas de la ciudad de Gáldar y sin posibilidad de huir hacia los barcos, se encierra con parte de sus hombres en una amplia construcción hecha por los canarios que se encuentra a la entrada de la ciudad.

En este cerco, Diego da Silva se refugia de la justicia de los canarios durante algunos días en los que se encuentra sitiado por completo, hasta que una noche, el Guanarteme Engoynaga, apiadándose de él y de sus hombres decide perdonarles la vida, y para ello usa una estrategia, entrar con ellos en el cerco…

“El enunciado completo, con el (correcto) ajuste que incluye Marín en la versión de 1694, se restituiría: Faita, faita, virirunjuen o, en su versión analítica, Fayəḍ, fayəḍ, birirûn-ǝghǝwăn.

Por el contexto, donde se demanda la muerte de los extranjeros retenidos, acaso la mejor traducción para el sintagma inicial fayəḍ debería contemplar la literalidad del ‘daño’ que se reclama para ellos (imprecación).

Por lo que respecta a la caracterización de los extranjeros, la imagen que se invoca conjuga dos ideas muy significativas a través de una proposición simple, cabe presumir que lexicalizada. El sujeto expreso remite al nombre plural iburerăn, ‘hombres sin familia ni amigos, alejados de su casa o país’. Individuos que, según reza el verbo (*āhghŭh, *āwghŭh > əqqəw) en su (correspondiente) 3ª persona del plural ǝghǝwăn, ‘vomitan’, bien por la situación de peligro inminente para sus vidas o bien como representación más general de los viajeros que reaccionan así después de una larga travesía (o tal vez en alusión al empleo de las armas de fuego)”.

Storia Di Musica #264 - Fabrizio De André - Non Al Denaro Non All’Amore Nè Al Cielo, 1971

La piccola scelta di dischi ispirati a grandi romanzi non poteva che finire con questo disco. Senza dubbio è forse il primo che viene a mente riguardo al tema di un disco italiano che ha la caratteristica appena citata, e rimane uno degli episodi più significati della carriera, straordinaria, del suo autore. Fabrizio De André aveva appena pubblicato un disco che, in teoria, poteva benissimo rientrare nel tema principale di Febbraio: La Buona Novella (1970) infatti era un concept, tipologia molto cara all’autore genovese, che si ispirava ai Vangeli Apocrifi. Il Gesù di De André è profondamente umano, in una Palestina antica che in molti passaggi rimanda ai riflessi dell’Italia degli anni ‘70, in una sorta di porta incantata di quotidianità. Allora lo aiutarono Roberto Danè, produttore, paroliere, arrangiatore che proprio in quegli anni fondava la Produttori Associati (che pubblica il disco) e gli arrangiamenti di Giampiero Reverberi. Album toccante, ha una delle mie canzoni preferite di De André, il Testamento Di Tito. Proprio questa canzone fu registrata dal cantante Michele, nome d’arte di Gianfranco Michele Maisano, come lato b di Susan Dei Marinai, scritta dallo stesso De André nei cui titoli non appare, sostituito dal grande Sergio Bardotti. Il progetto iniziale di un disco ispirato ad uno dei libri più amati da De André doveva essere infatti un progetto curato dallo stesso trio De André, Darè e Reverberi per il cantante Michele, ma dissidi interni ruppero l’accordo, e Reverberi se ne va. A questo punto, De André riprende l’Antologia di Spoon River di Edgar Lee Masters, il libro in questione, e ne inizia a ragionare con la sua amica Fernanda Pivano, colei che, su suggerimento di Cesare Pavese, per prima portò in Italia e tradusse questo viaggio sentimentale e particolare che Lee Masters fa dell’America di provincia, ancora più ricca di contraddizioni e storie marginali. Per chi non lo ricordasse, l’Antologia è una raccolta di poesie-epitaffio della vita dei residenti dell'immaginario paesino di Spoon River sepolti nel cimitero locale, pubblicato tra 1914 e il 1915 sul Reedy's Mirror di Saint Louis, che la Pivano tradusse e che Einaudi pubblicò  nel 1943 (prima edizione parziale) e nel 1945 (tutti i 212 epitaffi dei personaggi). De André collabora con un suo amico paroliere, Giuseppe Bentivoglio, con cui scrisse Ballata Degli Impiccati da Tutti Morimmo A Stento del 1968, per i testi e sceglie agli arrangiamenti un fresco diplomato del conservatorio, Nicola Piovani, al suo primo impiego importante di una carriera che lo porterà fino all’Oscar. Ad aiutarli una squadra di musicisti grandiosa:  il violista Dino Asciolla, Edda Dell'Orso, soprano, i chitarristi Silvano Chimenti e Bruno Battisti D'Amario, questi tre ultimi storici collaborato di Ennio Morricone, il bassista Maurizio Majorana, membro dei Marc 4, il violoncellista classico d'origine russa Massimo Amfiteatrof, il batterista Enzo Restuccia, il maestro beneventano Italo Cammarota e il polistrumentista Vittorio De Scalzi, membro fondatore dei New Trolls. De André compone 9 brani, partendo come Lee Masters da La Collina, il luogo dove sorge il cimitero dove riposano i defunti di Spoon Rivers. 7 brani sono divisi in due grandi categorie: uomini morti d’invidia, ovvero Un Matto, Un Giudice, Un Blasfemo, Un Malato Di Cuore e uomini di scienza, con le sue contraddizioni etiche, ovvero Un Medico, Un Chimico, Un Ottico. Rimane poi Il Suonatore Jones, l’unico che rimane con lo stesso titolo del libro, che chiude il disco, con De André che però gli “toglie” il violino e lo fa suonatore di flauto. Straordinario è il lavoro di rifacimento e di ricreazioni nei testi: per esempio ne Un Giudice, ispirato a Selah Lively, deriso per la sua statura, in Masters è 5 piedi e 2 pollici (=157 cm circa) e nel testo di De André diviene così: Cosa vuol dire avere\Un metro e mezzo di statura\Ve lo rivelan gli occhi\E le battute della gente. I personaggi dell’invidia sono il giudice che ha trovato nella vendetta la sua alternativa alla derisione di essere basso, il matto che è stato spinto dall'invidia a “imparare la Treccani a memoria” (anche qui splendido gioco di trasposizione, in Lee Masters è l'Enciclopedia Britannica), il malato di cuore che riesce a vincere l'invidia attraverso l'amore, nonostante muoia appena porge le sue labbra su quelle della ragazza di cui è innamorato, Un Blasfemo invece è la canzone più politica, essendo uno strale contro chi “non Dio, ma qualcuno che per noi l'ha inventato / ci costringe a sognare in un giardino incantato”. Degli uomini di scienza, un medico è costretto dalla sua benevolenza, cioè curare i malati gratis, a vendere pozioni “miracolose” essendo caduto in miseria, un chimico è invece una storia di disillusione sull’amore, di un uomo che non capisce le unioni imperfette degli uomini rispetto a quelle perfette delle sostanze chimiche, un ottico invece, che vorrebbe regalare ai clienti un paio di occhiali magici per vedere davvero la realtà, è l’unico che probabilmente non è morto, dato che parla al presente (unicità che è presente anche in Lee Masters). Chiude il disco Il Suonatore Jones, inno alla libertà, di chi non ha voluto chiudere la sua libertà lavorando nei campi ma “Finii con i campi alle ortiche\Finii con un flauto spezzato\E un ridere rauco\E ricordi tanti\E nemmeno un rimpianto”. Oltre la qualità immensa del lavoro testuale è la musica che stupisce: gli arrangiamenti orchestrali, gli sviluppi tematici (come nel caso del motivo principale dell’iniziale La Collina, in continua trasformazione), la sovrapposizione di parti in forma di suite (un Ottico, con evidenti echi progressive ad un certo punto), l’uso di strumenti classici come clavicembali e violini. Sulla copertina della prima edizione, quella che ho pubblicato anche io, c’è un evidente errore grafico, con l’errata accentazione di "né". L’errore fu aggiustato nelle edizioni successive, e nel disco era presenta una lunghissima e delicata intervista di Fernanda Pivano a De André sulla genesi di questo disco e sul libro di Edgar Lee Masters, e alcuni racconti dello scrittore americano erano inseriti all’interno della confezione. Disco memorabile, da riscoprire e che formerà con il successivo, l’amatissimo e criticatissimo Storia Di un Impiegato uscito appena un anno più tardi (ad inizio del 1973) una trilogia lucidissima e potentissima sull’Italia di inizio anni ‘70.

En 1978, cuando se hizo la película de acción real de Superman, el joven actor Christopher Reeve fue elegido para el papel.

La forma en que un Reeve delgado construyó su cuerpo para ser el Superman musculoso y fornido todavía tiene a los fanáticos impresionados.

En la década de 1970, los cómics mostraban a Superman con sus bíceps abultados y su físico musculoso, que se podía ver incluso a través de su traje azul.

Christopher Reeve tuvo que hacer justicia a esa imagen. Falleció tras un lamentable accidente hipico, con tan solo 52 años.

Pero no sin antes dejar un legado.

Un vídeo reciente de YouTube de Luke Sherran exploró cómo Christopher Reeve se negó a ponerse músculos falsos para su papel de Superman. Un pequeño clip de la película original de 1978 inició el vídeo, en el que Reeve, como Superman, le dice a Lois Lane, interpretada por Margot Kidder, que pesa 225 libras. Luego, el narrador dijo con razón: "Para los niños nacidos en los años 70 y 80, Christopher Reeve era el Superman original" .

Sin embargo, el casting de Reeves no fue un paseo por el parque para él. Inicialmente fue pasado por alto por ser demasiado delgado, a diferencia del gran cuerpo musculoso de Superman.

Reeve entrenó con David Prowse, el actor y fisico culturista que encarnó a Darth Vader. Y durante seis semanas,lo ayudó a conseguir los músculos para ser Superman. En una entrevista lo explicó Prowse.

“Él fue fantástico. Era una persona muy encantadora”, dijo Prowse sobre Reeve. “Éramos como hermanos, nos llevábamos muy bien juntos. Y durante el período que lo tuve, lo saqué de 170 libras cuando empezamos y pesaba 212 [libras] cuando se puso el traje”.

En una entrevista realizada mientras entrenaba, Reeve dijo que comía cuatro comidas mientras seguía una dieta alta en proteínas y tomaba vitaminas.

“La cuestión es que, en esta parte en particular, hay que empezar desde afuera y trabajar hacia adentro”, dijo Reeve entonces. "Puedes hacer todo el trabajo interior que quieras, y aun así no te llevará a ser Superman si no tienes la fuerza física para hacerlo".

Continuó: "La cuestión es que cuanto más fuerte me vuelvo, y todavía no soy tan fuerte, pero estoy logrando eso, cuanto más fuerte me vuelvo, más ayuda a mi actitud mental hacia el papel".

Algunos mandos intermedios aliados muestran su más enérgico desacuerdo con esta acción contra civiles indefensos, ya que Dresde no es una ciudad industrial de producción de material de guerra. El atentado con bomba SuperFerry de 2004 mató a 119 personas. Miles de iraquíes han muerto a causa de los bombardeos de Al-Qaeda. Solo en 2007, las bombas explotaron en Qahtaniya y Jazeera, Irak, matando a 796 e hiriendo a 1, 562 personas. Osama animó a otros grupos terroristas a atacar Estados Unidos. Causó la Guerra contra el Terror, que mató de 127.170 a 1,2 millones de personas. Osama fue asesinado el 2 de mayo de 2011. (por EEUU sin juicio)
