If you could design a Leopold-Loeb fictional story, what would you want in it? What would it focus on? What what you do differently than other stories based on them? Thanks!
oh the timing of this ask is kind of incredible bc i'm actually writing a novel right now! so unfortunately i'm not going to be able to answer this ask too thoroughly. :( i'll try to provide some general details tho!
it's just covering a period of three to four years, from when the duo meet through the crime (i'm not 100% sure on when it'll end currently — i have a few ideas in mind — but i will not be including any court proceedings lol). i don't intend for it to follow the case beat for beat (à la swoon, more or less) as it's a rural setting in the late 1970s rather than 1920s chicago. however i plan to include some other details that are usually left out because they're not directly relevant to the case (e.g. loeb's concussion).
overall though i'm really prioritizing getting their dynamic right, since that tends to be the main issue with like 95% of adaptations. i'm also writing exclusively from the pov of the loeb character since so many adaptations are either narrated by the leopold character or they alternate between the two (not that there aren't any completely from the loeb pov; little brother fate comes to mind). but i assume that people often write from the leopold perspective since he wasn't a compulsive liar + had the chance to ~tell his story~ after prison. & it's of course interesting to get an inside look on obsessive love, but i just want to explore the other side of it all.
i also do not plan on deep diving into The Commission Of The Crime Itself bc i am not entirely interested in writing, in detail, the murder of a child. doubly so since it's an adaptation of an actual crime.

I liked Sonny and Brenda’s chemistry, but yea I can understand what that anon means when it comes to their relationship making someone uncomfortable. I don’t think that person was looking for a healthy relationship from a soap and of course soap couples have their toxic elements, but at times with S&B, it would go from your average toxic soap couple to okay this is kinda triggering. I can say the same with Luke and Laura’s coupling. People love their chemistry, but it’s not easy to put their chemistry above the fact that he raped her. That’s uncomfortable for anybody to watch no matter if it’s only fictional.
All very true. With what you pointed out, pairs like SnB and LnL might not be my cup of tea due to the scale being high on the "toxicity severity." But as I said yesterday, if it's not for you, then it's not for you. It could be for someone else and that's fine too.

ABC Radio National
Tumblr media
"Think Bigger"
ABC Radio National, or just ABC RN, is a public broadcasting national radio network owned and operated by the ABC- the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, who, according to industry research website IBIS World, are owned by the Commonwealth Government of Australia. Being a network, it broadcasts country-wide, and a brief glance at their schedule on the ABC Listen website (linked here) reveals the formatting to be that of a news and talk radio network, full of individual one-hour shows discussing a wide and diverse range of individual topics covering, according to their about page, "arts and culture, business and current affairs, health, science and technology, Indigenous culture and issues, and religion and ethics" (abc.net.au).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
History on the blog thus far dictates that the target audience for a radio network that primarily deals in news and talk content is likely to be older in nature, something supported by the existence of the ABC's sister network triple j. triple j is marketed as the radio station for Australian youth, leaving older audiences to be targeted by stations like ABC RN. Whilst I cannot find a specific range, I'm willing to suggest that the wide and diverse range of content featured on ABC RN leaves room for those over the age of thirty to enjoy, but the dense nature of it might be too complex for anyone younger.
Regardless of who specifically listens to them, ABC RN likely enjoys a large audience due to broadcasting across the Australian state, which shows in their large social media following- approximately 327k followers in total, a very impressive number. So, what do the people who tune in to ABC RN expect to hear?
Tumblr media
I myself wanted to find out, and in order to do so, I listened back to one of the network's one-hour shows online via the ABC Listen website. Broadcast on Thursday 28th December 2023, I was greeted to LNL (Late Night Live) Summer, presented by Sarah Dingle. The one-hour show involved bringing aboard an expert on a certain topic of importance, then talking about it at length. In this case, Dingle conversed with guest journalist Dan Egan about the paradoxical subject of the increasing lack of phosphate in the wild but overabundance of it in our waterways. She took to posing Egan with questions on the subject, such as how phosphate is made, why it's important and what danger its concentration imposes, and occasionally contributed a bit of information of her own, but overall let him do the talking. It felt more like an in-depth and extended interview than a talk show, but this was to the show's benefit- being an expert on the subject, Egan was able to talk a lot about it, elaborating on phosphate's importance as a natural nutrient, and how too much of it can create a toxic environment- a problem for which humanity is at fault. Dingle ended the segment by asking after a potential solution to the problem at hand, something which Egan was all too happy to suggest, and which I was relieved to hear.
Tumblr media
This discussion and the one after about the social lives of trees (with a different expert) were both half an hour in length, taking up the entirety of the show's playtime, which if anything shows how in-depth and dense this interview-based talk show is. Being a talk show, there was no music presentation of any kind- only the sound of Dingle and her guests' voices, but I never once found myself pulled in. I think it was the mix of there being a good rapport between Dingle and said guests, the interview-like nature of it and the genuine intrigue and importance of the topic at hand that attracted then carried me through the entire hour.
From a programmer's perspective, this single hour I listened to exemplified what the station is all about. In-depth, dense but interesting talk about some seriously important or at least intriguing and diverse topics with no fluff or nonsense. It lacked a necessarily local feel to it, necessary as this is a public service radio station, but in the service of talking about subjects which could affect all life on Earth, I do think that's a sacrifice worth making. It's one thing to simply talk about these topics, but it's another to actively engage in them and even hunt after a potential solution if needs be. What I listened to may have been only a small fraction of what the entire station has to offer, but it was certainly an exemplary and worthy example of the kind of programming to expect from a radio network designed to serve the public.

An ask for the D20 GM ask game! I rolled a 4: what sets your campaign apart from the rest?
I’m running a Splatoon-themed game that’s explicitly a bit silly, especially because I’m learning to DM while a few of the players are learning to play, so we’re just having fun with it. This has led to some wild moments like one of the players picking up an enemy crab midway through a fight, cracking it in half, and eating its meat, dealing psychic damage to the other crabs who had to watch this happen.

Find the word tag
Tagged by @cwritesfiction thank youuuuuu!!! Iirc the rules are that someone gives you words and you find them in your book so LET’S DO THIS FOR Lunar New Love HELL YEAH
Phone
Minh set their phone aside and decided to gently scream internally for about a minute.
(^ Minh, having accidentally let them grandma think they’re coming with someone and now everyone’s hype for it and it’s too late to clear the misunderstanding)
Smack
Smack doesn’t appear anywhere in LNL. A shame Cass never took her chance to smack Minh’s ass at least once.
Yellow
In those wretched hours, I remember the yellow apricot blossoms we hung against the walls of your grandparents' house.
Last night, I dreamt I was back there; and the flowers told me I was lucky, for I had in my hands a treasure that was worth all the gold on their petals. "Where?" I asked. When I woke up, you were the first thing on my mind—the memory of your fingers threaded with mine.
Today, I hope I am lucky still.
IT’S ANGSTY POETRY HOURS
tagging @gingerly-writing and @dnbryn if you guys want to share any lines from your sexy WIPs ;D
The words are shadow, bone, fly and scream because I’m in a spooky vibe!

Do you have favorite and least favorite adaptations of Leopold-Loeb? And if you do can explain why you like/dislike them? Thanks!
Thanks for the ask! I apologize for not responding right away; I'm notorious for procrastination. :P
Favorite lnl-inspired film (and overall fave adaptation tbh): Alfred Hitchcock's Rope, no contest. Top-notch film making, AND it's a permanent part of queer film history.
Tumblr media
It also reminds me of one of the best episodes of The Office, Dinner Party. Rope can be summarized in one quote: "Brandon and Phillip seem to be playing their own separate game, and it's called 'Let's See How Uncomfortable We Can Make Our Guests' - and they're both winning."
Least favorite adaptation: Stephen Stroganoff's Thrill Me. (I won't lie though, this one is kind of a guilty pleasure as well. :P)
What I like about it: catchy tunes, some of the music is actually good, plus a lot of productions really dial the gay up to 11.
What I dislike about it: historical inaccuracies, clunky lyrics, the tired "lnl as twink and sociopath" trope.
Hope this answers your question! :D

I saw a rumor that the writers are trying to go the Luke & Laura route for Sprina and I’m hoping that’s true 🙏🏾
As long as no one gets raped, then that would be fantastic! Let them get that kind of writing and treatment.

Late Night Louisiana Pt. 1
Summary: It’s late 19th century, Y/N moves to Louisiana to learn more about vampires. But what happens when she finds one likely creature of the night at Porterhollow Cemetery?
LNL Masterlist
Pairing: Vampire!bucky x reader
A/N: This may not be completely historically accurate but I have studied the slang and am currently doing an in-depth study about the late 1800’s. Love y’all ♥️
Tumblr media
The peaceful sound of crickets, the croaking of frogs, and the quiet chattering of folk from across the cobblestone road, the muffled sound of laughter in the tavern. I sat on the shore of a lake, taking it all in. It was late at night. The moon reflecting off the rippling water. I've always admired the ambience and scene of late night Louisiana. There's something about it that makes me feel whole and at hum. I've always been one with nature, I guess that's why it makes me feel that way.
I've always been drawn to Louisiana because of the swamps and the tales of vampires lurking in the night. You might consider me to be crazy as a loon but those creatures of the night interest me. There's only a small chance of information folk have on vampires in Texas, where I was born and raised, I came here to learn more about them, to hear the stories about them, and to possibly find one.
I'm not getting my hopes up, though. I may never find one, they may not even be real, just a myth, like sirens and fairies, but who really knows? There's one certain vampire everyone has a story about here in Porterhollow, Louisiana. No one knows his real name, so they call him Wrecker of the Night, many claim to have seen him but there are some unlucky few that have seen him and gone mentally... unwell. They say after they met him, he appeared in their nightmares and slowly but surely drove them over the edge. The story of this vampire starts with how he became what he is, nobody knows what he was or who he was before he changed.
He was only twenty five when he turned, he had been kidnapped by a group of foreigners, one of the foreigners being a witch, the witch was making potions, he was their guinea pig, the group would test out the potions by making him drink the newly invented potions to see if they worked or if they needed tweaking. Well one day he was made to drink a potion that was still in the works and let's just say, some of the ingredients weren't measured correctly.
He started seizing and minutes later he laid there, cold as a wagon’s tire, no heartbeat. The foreigners panicked and threw his body in an alleyway and left him for the rats.
He woke up hours later, with a few bites on his arms and limbs. Those healed up quite nicely within a few hours, though. He felt a burning sensation in his stomach and throat. His brain telling him he was thirsty. He craved a metallic tasting fluid. Something rich and thick. He walked into a tavern, but not just any tavern, the tavern I'm sat across at this very moment. He sat at the bar and ordered a pint of beer, thinking it would quench his thirst. He chugged it down in seconds.
The bartender stared at him, he gave him a skeery wide eyed look. "The hell you staring at?" He asked.
He set the empty pint down, staring back at the bartender with an irritated look. "Sir, your um, your teeth are... go look in the bathroom." His voice trembled with fear, the bartender pointed towards a door on his left. He got up from the stool and walked into the bathroom. He got up closer to the mirror, his face was inches from his reflection, he raised his top lip and noticed his canines. They were longer than before, much sharper. He took a few steps and blinked, trying to process what was happening. He knew the potion he drank did this, it caused this. All this pain and the two sharp canines. Although he chugged the beer, he was still feeling like the thirsty man in a dry desert.
Days go by and he finally finds what quenches that painful thirst. It was blood, he started drinking the life out of animals but their blood was bland, they only ate grass, so there was no real flavor in the blood.
Days after his feeding he found out his strengths: enhanced strength, enhanced hearing, night vision, and longevity.
That was twenty years ago. He still haunts this town so they say, in search for the group that did this to him. He wanted so badly to find them so he could force them to make a potion to diminish the hunger for blood. They apparently fled to another part of the country after the little death scare. They left him as a cursed man, a damned man.
Now, to the other stories about this specific vampire, well there are too many to tell, most being fable and sounding like a child’s tale.
He only preys on the bummers of the town, some say he lives and dwells in Porterhollow cemetery. He visits the tavern once every blue moon. A lot of the town's whores boast about how they've slept with him, most of the outlaws claim they have killed him either with their bare hands or with their trusty dagger, and all the children claim he's played with them at least once at the lake. So many people have had these encounters with him, yet no one knows his name, no one has a sketch of his face. They all say whenever they were with him it was either always dark or half of his face was covered with a bandana. Some folk say he has crystal blue eyes and dark hair, almost black. His nose and mouth are almost always covered by the darkness of the night or his bandana.
Why cover his face? What’s there to hide? His fangs? Are they incredibly long? Does he look like some kind of vampire-walrus hybrid? I sure hope not.
They say once you stare into his blue eyes, it’s over. Your dead. You’re doomed as soon as you stare into his ocean eyes, he can entrance you and bite into you as soon as your under his spell. His eyes have their own powers. No witch could’ve done that, they’re just magical on their own—so they say.
I’ve been in Louisiana for almost two years, I’ve been studying the culture of vampires in this town’s book store, I’m good friends with the owner, Tobias Wentley. In fact, he’s the one who told me all the stories about the Wrecker. I’ve waited until candle-light to sit on the sandy shore of the lake, peering at the tavern, waiting for some mysterious man with a bandana covering his face to show up and enter the tavern for almost a year now. I’ve made a deal with myself, if he doesn’t show up tonight, I’ll go to the cemetery tomorrow night. I haven’t tried to go to Porterhollow cemetery yet, but only because it’s on the other side of town... it’s definitely not because I’m afraid of that place when the sun sets.
Wrecker was a no show.
