any new lmk hot takes 🔥🔥🔥

The LBD host - known in the active fandom as Bai He - does not need to become a major character and especially does not need to be a new member of the main cast.

Is there a lot of potential for her? Yes.

Could a lot of awesome storylines and character arcs come from her? Yes.

Does that automatically mean it’s best for the show to include those? No.

The “Embrace Your Destiny” specials really solidified a problem I’ve noticed from the beginning with the show’s writing by bringing all of the issues to a peak.

They’re trying to do too much in too little time.

In my initial analysis video of the show from when all that was out at the time was up to the Spider Queen Special, I brought up how I felt like the writers were forgetting to ‘Let your audience BREATHE’ because of how fast everything went. “Embrace Your Destiny” is the biggest example of this issue because there’s so much information being thrown at the audience that we hardly got any chance to process before the next big story-beat happened.

I could go on about that issue for forever and I’m considering making a video on it but after talking about it more than once in a server I’m in, I don’t feel it’s as big of a hot take as the Bai He thing.

The reason I bring it up, though, is because I feel a big reason FOR so many major story elements feeling rushed through is that there are too many characters that the writers are trying to develop.

Think about poor Sandy. We have three seasons - THREE SEASONS - of episodes and only ONE that touches on his character. This is made worse because the inner-conflicts we’re clued in on with him in “To Catch a Leaf” do not go ANYWHERE. I’m not saying they can’t or aren’t planning to in the future, and I’m not saying they’re required to give him a character arc for a good story (tho I could argue that it’s expected since he’s in the opening alongside everyone else and is presented as equally important), but it currently feels weird that he was so quickly regulated to “We don’t know what to do with him because we don’t have time to flesh him out at all so let’s just give him funny lines and faces while every other main character has a part in either developing their own arcs or the overarching plot.” AFTER they opened up an arc for him.

I honestly feel like if they didn’t have the time to explore his character and the conflicts he has further, then they would have been better off using that time for something else and saving the tease of his past for later.

The writers made a good call not including Red Son in Season 2.

You read that right.

Me, the person referring to Red Son as “My Dulcinea” because “Comfort Character” doesn’t do the subconscious emotions I discovered I have with him through hindsight justice and so the only terminology I can think of to do those feelings justice is referencing my favorite musical of all time that no one else has listened to in five ever and a day.

Me, the person who feels there’s so much to explore with his character and could easily find ways to fit him into the story of Season 2 narratively speaking.

I feel it was the best call to not include him.

Why? Because they didn’t have time to write the story they wanted while including justifiable reasoning for him to be there.

(Note that by ‘Time’ I’m referring to how long the episodes are and how many episodes they have. Not the deadlines to finish scripts)

If the show writers are already rushing through major plot elements in order to make sure they have plenty of time to close off Macaque’s arc (like when Red Son TOLD us that DBK and PIF ‘succumbed’ to the Lady Bone Demon and we saw NONE OF IT until they were released from her magic at the VERY END of the special which showed that Red Son and Mei had both ALREADY KNOWN THAT by the time we rejoined them as Mei wasn’t shocked to hear it) AND completely dropped/paused exploring/elaborating on Sandy’s inner-conflict that was already introduced to us in favor of having an entire episode introducing and solving a new one for Tang that we didn’t have any sign of him having before (that’s a whole ‘nother hot take)

Then what has everyone so convinced that they have time to explore possible major character arcs with the girl that was possessed by Lady Bone Demon?

We can justify it narratively and I could go on all day every day about concepts for the Fake Mayor being a past host that has been influenced by LBD for so long that he is a shell of his former self and that he and Bai He could have a beautiful bond over the understanding that no one else could possibly know what they went through better than they both do.

But does it fit in the shows genre/target audience AND do they have time?

I argue no to the latter and maybe to the former.

The girl the Lady Bone Demon had possessed will be best served as a character that occasionally comes in for some noodles (heck, I’d argue that she could work as a supporting character that is involved in some conversations about stuff going on because she’s around but still doesn’t have any full character-arcs of her own being explored in depth)

The show is adding too many characters and doesn’t have enough time to properly explore all of them.

Stop hiring more cooks.

Sandy doesn’t have room to make tea in the kitchen.

The gremlin man has been finished! :D

Took a bit but I'm really happy with it. I was wanted to make him look like he was a cool trading or tarot card and I think I succeeded!

From my two second Google search of: the hanged man tarot card meaning, I got that it usually represents "an ultimate surrender, sacrifice, or being suspended in time." I don't know how fitting it is for os! Mac's character but oh well!

I originally wanted something like the hunger because of backstory things, I couldn't really find any results of it being an actual tarot card(since I'm semi basing from them) so I went with a different one. Still happy with it though.

I wanna draw at least two more things for overshadowed au, also tarot card related, just working out composition for them.

You know, with all the "Nuwa is basically MK's mom" takes going around, I would like to call attention to 4x06, where MK was specifically described as "As simple creature—with no past, no family, and no name." By that point in 4x06 we had already gotten that flash of Nuwa, giving the implication that MK was created with the intent of being that blank slate with no family—not even finding a familial relationship in his creator. I'm mainly pointing this out to posit why I think MK will not be focused on finding "his real family" next season, you know. Like even in 4x08 when he says "You have scary demon ancestors? That just means you have family, you come from somewhere—I don't have a family, I don't have anything." I think that comes from a place of being so distraught over his mysterious origins and his "destiny". It's also set-up, so that Pigsy calling MK "son" later in 4x10 has some impact. It's Pigsy saying directly to MK "I'm you're family, you have me" in contrast to his hesitation at the beginning of 4x05. And you know? MK's happy with that, his friends (or more aptly, his family) are his main driving motivation. They're what he cares most about in the world, and what he does moving forward is going to be for them.

Sick and tired of reading about people say that Dazai knowing about the plan beforehand somehow takes away from the genuineness of the skk moments

You mean you WANT Dazai to choose to kill Chuuya for the greater good and then not give a shit immediately after?? Ignoring the speech for a second, the reason he was able to be so carefree after “killing” Chuuya is because he KNEW Chuuya was gonna be okay.

First of all, Dazai knowing Chuuya wasn’t gonna die doesn’t take away from his speech. He replayed all those memories for himself, nobody else was seeing what was happening in his head. He was GENUINELY upset at the idea of losing Chuuya and having to put Chuuya through that, DESPITE knowing Chuuya would be okay. He was STILL upset. That’s way better than him thinking he just killed Chuuya, sparing him a thought, not even crying (bc no that wasn’t a tear) and then just moving on being silly as if nothing happened.

And then the other speech him saying that they’re destined to - do you seriously think he’d just make that up for shits and giggles? He was being serious. If he was gonna play it up for Fyodor’s sake he would’ve said the most emotional out of pocket line to ever be written, which to them would be related to him leaving Chuuya behind. But no he just said they’re destined to do something.

Dazai talks a lot about the past to Chuuya (Chuuya does not participate) but those two are clearly emotionally constipated bc they never have a conversation about what they mean to each other (which I think is bc Asagiri is not ready to reveal that yet). This was clearly Dazai taking his opportunity to say what he REALLY thinks / feels forcing Chuuya to listen without the commitment. Bc if anyone gets the ick later he can use the convenient excuse of “oh I didn’t mean that” which is bullshit.

And I do think an element of this idea that it’s worse that Dazai had everything planned comes from the misunderstanding that Dazai has completely changed since he was in the port mafia. Dazai just tends to make “better” (as in more objectively good) choices, but he very much still puts on a front. You guys do realize that his silly persona is just that right? A persona? He’s literally being fake every time he’s silly. That’s not his real personality. He’s a morally gray character. He never became a purely good person and he never will. It makes MUCH more sense that he planned everything out with Chuuya beforehand.

He met up with Akutagawa before getting arrested, he probably did the same with Chuuya.

And yes, this means he DID use and manipulate Sigma the entire time. Why wouldn’t he? Sigma has an ability Dazai needed. I’m sure Dazai planned for sigma to not die bc in his role as a detective it’s part of his job to mitigate losses of innocent lives, he knows this, but also bc Dazai needs to know what sigma learned. I genuinely hope there isn’t anyone out there thinking Dazai wouldn’t manipulate sigma bc he cares about him? He just met him. He has no personal investment in him. But he WILL make sure sigma is alive bc of the aforementioned reasons.

Hot Take Regarding Shadowpeach and Spicynoodles

NOTE: This isn't attacking anyone! This is my personal opinion on it all, and I thought some people might find it interesting and/or helpful.

Sun Wukong and Macaque in the JTTW are Sworn Brothers. Now, to be fair, I don't know how one would break off that swear, or if they even can. I'm too white to know that, fr.

I have been informed by two others that (in Anthony C Yu's translation) Macaque and Wukong were not Sworn Brothers. While I'm not sure which translation I had read (like I'd told them, I'm very bad with my memory and tend to hyperfocus on other details), I appreciate the added information from both @lucidboba and @morfanerina. I'm inclined to believe them, of course! Even if I'd read differently, that doesn't mean the translation I read was correct. Thank you both!! Though my opinion on writing for them won't change, I'm happy you've given me this input. :)

However, I know that Sun Wukong sees Redson as his Nephew. He calls him so in JTTW multiple times, along with DBK as his brother and PIF as his sister-in-law.

If you count MK as Wukong's son or even Macaque's son, he and Redson would be cousins.

This is why I won't be writing for either ship. Because, logically, they are incestual.

(I won't be deleting what remains of my previous post, for those to see what I have corrected. I'm not afraid to admit I was wrong! ^^)

Okay but does anyone else think an Aladdin au would fit Shadowpeach ridiculously well? Specifically the part where there’s a giant parade and musical number introducing Prince Ali, because Wukong strikes me as the kinda monkey who would ABSOLUTELY do that unironically. I’ve been listening to Prince Ali (the Will Smith version cus it scratches the brain just right) and I can almost see how the parade would go, almost nothing would change except it’s actually introducing “The Monkey King, Sun Wukong” and it’s legitimate instead of a wish granted by a genie. I don’t know what the circumstances would be, or even why there’s a bunch of people trying to impress Liu Er Mihou or The Six-Eared Macaque for his hand in marriage in the first place, but I just know Wukong would see the ad for it and he’d break down his generals door and yell “GUYS GET THE PARADE FLOATS READY I’M GONNA IMPRESS THE FUCK OUTTA THIS GUY” and they’d just sigh like “Ah great, here we go again”

um, I’m not that big of a fan of the PIF & Macaque sisterhood headcanon 👉👈 idk I don’t see it. no hate or anything to y’all who do enjoy this headcanon btw it’s just not for me. it doesn’t stop me from reading fics that have it. tbh I don’t mind it as much when it’s an AU bc Macky needs more friends but overall, not my thing 🤷🏻‍♀️

is it a hot take to say i actually like the fact that MK’s only knowledge of the monkey king comes from Monkey Mech, Monkey Cop, and Monkey King: the Animated Series? maybe it’s because even tho Batman is my fav dc character, I have not even read a single issue that covers this man. I could harp on about Batman and his character and my woes with live action movies missing the core of what Batman is, but I still have yet to read his comics. MK is the same to that. Monkey King was/is MK’s blorbo, okay? he studied that guy so hard in his favorite pieces of media to where he could recite who the character was blindfolded, in precise detail, while only being given an hour to prepare. MK’s huge journal of sketches and him geeking out (and probably where he had a couple headcanons thrown in there) is from those guys and not from the books and I kind of love it.

i mean, JTTW and Sun Wukong are such a staple in Chinese culture that I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of fans haven’t read the books either but watched all the animated shows, know everything about the live action movies, made a tier for their fav monkey king (had nasty battles over that too), like any fandom with a plethora of media pieces to choose from.

So yeah 😤

you have a point about fandoms as a whole having a sexist lean but isn't mei is literally one of the most popular characters in the fandom and dragonfruit one of the most popular ships in the fandom? It's one of the top 5 most written about ships on ao3 if you remove self insert stuff.

So I'll preface this with I only have experience with the lmk fandom on tumblr.

But like, it's 90% shadowpeach stuff (with maybe MK as a third wheel). I know this, you know this. If you look through the "lego monkie kid" tag right now Ne Zha has more content related to him and only him than Mei does—she's usually gonna be thrown in with dragonfruit and traffic light trio (though, admittedly the lmk fandom has a problem of viewing characters outside of shipping in general). For every 1 Mei fanart there's 1 piece of Ao Lie fanart to match despite their vast differences in screen time. Like, am I insane? Am I insane for thinking it's the sexism?
