He handed it to Byron who hesitated before taking it, staring at it with his brows crooked suspiciously like it was some ugly little creature that might bite him.
"This is the same one you gave me last time," Byron said.
"Yes, but this time I want you to actually read it. I've highlighted some things for you."
"'Give someone a compliment' it says. Well, I guess I'll start by telling you that you're not the worst therapist I've had," Byron laughed.
"We may have to work on that one..."

When I first started reading MattDrai fics on AO3 I remember thinking “wait what the HELL is going on why is this the most consistently well-written fanfiction I’ve read in any fandom? Is this a thing? Do people know??” And apparently it is and they do.

I understand that cheekily calling classics fanfic is a misnomer because, yeah, on a technical level, the concept of fanfiction arose in modern parlance thanks to IP laws which didn't exist back when telling stories based on other people's stories was just how storytelling worked--however, when someone is mocking fanfic by poking at its lack of originality, the comparison is relevant and warranted. If the thing that makes fanfic 'lesser' than Officially Published Works is the fact that it's based on the ideas, characters, worlds, plots, and concepts of those that came before, then the fact that a lot of Officially Published Works are likewise 'unoriginal' is relevant, and that includes (most) Arthuriana and The Odyssey and Dante's Inferno and etc etc.
Shakespeare's Richard III and Julius Ceasar were Historical RPF (among others, he did like eight plays based on historical figures lmfao). So is The Crown. The Scarlet Pimpernel is fix-it fic of the Reign of Terror, and it also kick-started the entire superhero genre (you can thank the Baroness Orczy for Batman's existence). Back in the day, writers could look at some story that someone else came up with, say 'hey, wow, that's pretty cool, I'm gonna rewrite this, stick in these bits too, and do it my way' and no one could say shit about it. That's what separates modern fanfic from the landscape of literary canon Back In The Day, but pointing out that if something were being created today in the modern literary landscape it'd be going on ao3 with a set of fandom/genre tags is relevant to the general 'fanfic is dumb and stupid because it lacks originality' argument.

Hi everyone, I was thinking of doing this since a while so here we are. I will share some fics that I like on AO3 (roughly from newest to oldest) with small comments. Maybe you can find your next read here! If you have read any of these and want to discuss, my inbox is also open. I will tag the writers who mentioned their tumblrs on AO3 but you can always ask me to remove your work from this list for whatever reason.
This is a fic rec post but is also a tribute to all of the amazing writers that had an influence on me at some point. You make these platforms a better place and I cannot thank you enough.
I will only give the rating and the pairing but please do check ALL the tags before reading it by clicking the link.
sanctuary by pumpkinning ( @sunshinesebby ) (Rated E, Seb/Charles): If the AO3 was on fire and I could only save one work, it would be this. An insanely beautiful slow-burn fantasy AU work. I cannot even describe how much I love this. It will wrench your heart and make you cry in the same damn chapter. Emotions flow so strong and the world building is very, very sophisticated. They have a beautiful, beautiful mind. If you can survive the first portion of tension, you will be rewarded with a fucking devastatingly mind blowing love story as well as a very imagination igniting fantasy world. Go fucking read it 100000/10 work.

polite company by floretum ( @rosyjuly ) (Rated E, Seb/Mick): Okay so floretum always gives a masterclass in smut writing and this is no exception. A Smick fic in its nature but is also a threesome. Lots of introspection, just as I like it. It’s a relatively long one shot so can be read during a long commute.

reptilia by raikkonen (armario) (Rated E, Pierre/Charles): This is one of the works that made me the fic writer I am today. If you read it, you can see the echoes of the themes I use all the time and I am still under the influence of this brilliant piece. It is a very heavy fic with tags to match so PLEASE read the tags. It’s so devastatingly good and the self-destructive behaviour described in this piece has been an inspiration to desecration, literally. The fic that started it all.

ask me no questions (and i'll tell you no lies) by artifice (Rated E, Seb/Mark): This has a special place in my heart. It’s a part of the nobody asks you questions series where Seb is an intelligence agent and Mark is an assassin. However, this one is more fluffy than anything else. It has very well-written smut and a lot of big emotions and is overall a well rounded piece that never disappoints. Kudos to artifice for fuelling Sebmark collective at these trying times.

blur the line by alltimecharlo (Rated E, Seb/Mark): This fic is one of the two fics by alltimecharlo that got me in a chokehold. Lawyer AU Sebmark. Absolutely delicious writing that I go back to read from the start every now and then. It’s brilliant, beautiful and captures Sebmark vibes very, very well.

pleaser by alltimecharlo (Rated E, Seb/Mark): Easily my second favourite F1 RPF of all times. I go back to this like I go back to Queer As Folk US every time I look for a specific type of comfort. Sugar daddy AU where Seb is a college student and Mark is mad rich. It’s sweet all over the place with very good smut and it’s light hearted piece, just like your staple feel-good 2000-2010s TV series.

keeping the faith by Anonymous (Rated Teen and Up, Mick/Lewis): Oh how I wish this creator wasn’t anonymous! This is a very very interesting and rare Mick/Lewis piece where Lewis is in the mafia and Mick is a priest. I am not sure how to explain but narration has a very special harmony and when you come to the end, you feel like you fulfilled a destiny, by completing a foreshadowed circle. A literary beauty more than anything else, although not a light read.

Saltwater and Gasoline by Kaytheologie (Rated E, Charles/Bono): A rare Charles/Bono piece where Charles moves to Mercedes and Bono is his engineer. It’s a quite sweet one although there are some heavy psychological themes. The smut part is very well written as well, a truly nice one. If you like rare pairs and have a praise kink, this one is for you.

Seb The Protector by eams81 (Rated E, Seb/Mick): A classical Smick piece with a sprinkle of mental health issues. It’s nice, fluffy and angsty. However, the author stopped updating in late 2022 so I am not sure when the next chapter is going to be but I enjoyed it a lot while it lasted. Again, not a light read.

lit by electric lights by Anonymous (Rated E, Charles/Max): As the tag says, literal identity porn Lestappen fic. And yeah, Charles is a camboy here. It’s a relatively light read without complicated concepts but I remember thinking it got a bit unrealistic for the plot at some point. Still a nice piece.

Now I'm 23 - and there ain't nobody who can drink like me by Danubius (Not Rated, Mick/Kimi): I remember liking Danubius a lot and this is a very nice example of their writing imo. Kimi/Mick piece but it’s mostly angsty and tackles the theme of alcoholism. It has a nice and hopeful ending but it is a bit of a heavy read but if you like angst and comfort, this might be for you.

snapshots into a marriage: vegan, organic, gluten free, toxic to others by finedae ( @blorbocedes ) (Rated M, Brocedes): I don’t know how she does it but I know I am glad she does it. It’s difficult to unpack. This gorgeous brocedes piece has a lot of unhealthy themes like codependency, lots of manipulation but it is very, very well written and oddly peaceful? It’s hard to describe but if you like power couple brocedes where they are sickeningly in love with a lot of toxic traits and believe that a healthy amount of mind games is good for your soul, this one is for you. Absolute masterpiece.

Flesh of my flesh by Charlotte_Stant  ( @boxboxlewis ) (Rated E, Seb/Charles): Okay, so at some point I couldn’t remember the title of this piece and an anon assisted me. It’s a piece that you will remember at 4 am in a warm summer night and will excite you in the same way it did the first time. It is a Sebchal fic where Charles is a priest (do you see the pattern here) and Seb is a driver. It has that classical Catholic guilt that is executed pretty successfully. I absolutely adore the smut portion of this as well, very well written.

to the finnish line by floretum ( @rosyjuly ) (Rated E, Kimi/Seb/Charles): Kimi/Seb/Charles threesome. Absolutely mind blowing. I have to say that it has some under-negotiated elements and overstimulation but I think overall, it is safe, sane and consensual. Again, a smut writing masterclass and a pleasantly light read.

Ash From Your Fire by bones_2_be ( @elementalmoments ) (Rated E, Carlos/Lando): Where Lando has previously fucked Carlos’s dad and now he is fucking Carlos. A bit too much to take in at one go. Also a part of a series. If you like slightly problematic relationships, lots, lots of jealousy, and fucked up dynamics, this can be for you but this is nowhere near a light read.

Into My Arms by Anonymous (Rated M, Jenson/Nico): A nice little princess cake aftercare fic, as it says in the prompt. It’s short, sweet, fluffy and cute af.

All To Another Heart by akirakurosawa (Rated E, Seb/Charles): Girl!Charles & Ferrari Team Principal!Seb fic. This is an overall happy one but they don’t immediately get together and they have some issues to resolve but I like the general happy, hopeful and ambitious feeling of this piece. Unfortunately, it’s been a while since the author last updated (Late 2022) but the published bit is very worth your time.

howdy i write (nsfw) skz memberxmember fics and i stumbled upon your post replying to that puritan rpf hater anon a while ago and i just! man! i dont really go here (skzxreader) but i felt such a sense of community seeing that cuz like yeah!! women have been writing fanfic and rpf for years, decades even, and the shame and stigma around it has NEVER faded and us writers are always getting shamed for it!! and to see another writer in this community actually stand up for it and defend us and the history behind it, it was just so refreshing and comforting. especially since no one ever really takes us seriously, even our peers, like we're all just too embarassed and ashamed to defend ourselves and we just take the shame and mocking. like, as if there isn't any value in what we do, just because people think it's weird and shameful. like yes we are exploring love and sex and relationships in the fics we're writing!! and yes its silly and naive to act like we arent being marketed to!! thank you!!

THIS ‼️‼️ It’s something women have been doing for CENTURIES and have historically been shamed for, people just want us to feel bad about ourselves in every aspect of our lives as a woman and I refuse to let that be me. Most aspects of sex I learned through fanfiction as a result of unrestricted access to the internet at such a young age and it was up to me to decide what was safe and what made me comfortable, and a huge part of why I have such a healthy relationship with my sexuality is because of the authors who introduced it to me in a way that wasn’t some rough visual porn. I’ve always been fascinated with exploring sexuality/kinks/fetishes through a respectful and a literary lens, and I see nothing wrong with utilizing adults you’re marketed to find attractive, to fulfill characters in those plots. Of course I would never disrespect any member of skz in real life and I would never carry it beyond my fictional little blog here, but fantasizing and having sexual attraction is completely normal and human. My blog is for the adults who love reading, share a mutual attraction to skz, love plot-based smut and can engage in open, healthy dialogue about sex and kinks. It’s also a community for us to derive from our fantasies and be able to apply that to real relationships so we can better ourselves. There’s no malicious intent behind any of it, so the shaming is just beyond me. Of COURSE I will defend you guys, we’re all family here and this is a safe space for whenever you need it 👼🫶 thank you for these kind words, sending you all my love !!

Title: Spec Ops Mission 98: Jazz's Interrogation at Soundwave's Pedes

Summary: Surrounded by the torrid fiction of his fellow Autobots, Jazz uncovers a Decepticon plot hidden amidst their written fantasies. Can the Spec Ops commander turn this plot of high treason into a narrative…of love? OR Jazz is surrounded by a bunch of perverted writers, and wouldn't you know it, one of them is a Decepticon.
Why I love it: This story left me stunned... in a good way. I started reading it as a WIP because the premise sounded hilarious (hahaha, the bots and cons are writing RPF fanfic about each other, hahaha). But as the story went on, it turned into a LOT more. It became a story about love and trust, and forgiveness and boundaries, set against the backdrop of a brutal war. And then when it ended and we got the wrap-up of all the threads that we hadn't even known existed... Wow. This was an amazing story, and I will definitely read it again someday.

Years after suffering a great personal loss, Drift works for Flatline doing menial tasks. But when Flatline sends him to find someone who has done the impossible – survive an attack – Drift finds himself swept up in a continent-spanning plot. To save the Cybertron they love, Drift and his allies must find out what these creatures are, who made them, and if they can be stopped.
Why I love it: One thing that I've always loved about Altraviolet's work is the worldbuilding. (If you've been paying attention at all to my recommendations over the past 10 days, you'll know that I LOVE me some good worldbuilding. 😄) This story has a wonderful amount, specifically focused on geology and botany, and their relation to culture. BUT ALSO it has a gripping story that sits on top of all that worldbuilding, with a "rare trio" that I never would have thought of myself, but it really works well here. The author has an excellent way of making sure each character has their own voice, and motivations, and hopes and fears, and then wraps it all up in story that somehow wouldn't feel out of place in a Mythology of Cybertron collection.

1. how many works do you have on ao3? 24
2. what’s your total ao3 word count? 195,338, and i’m pretty sure half of that came from in flammam flammas alone
3. what fandoms do you write for? currently atla but i’ve dabbled in merlin, ancient history rpf (lmfao), and danmei before
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
nip it in the bud (what can i say, zukos nips are obviously enrapturing!)
lan eye for the bland guy (a testament to the people power of the mdzs fandom)
in flammam flammas (always felt like she should get more love! proportional to the sheer bloody labour i put into her 🙈😆)
deep and creamy (doesn’t deserve it. galactic repairman is way better, i wrote this as a shitty lil voice test fic for zuko pov!!)
the iconoclast (neck to neck with deep and creamy actually, will defs surpass in the next couple of days)
5. do you respond to comments? i make an effort to respond to each of them to show my appreciation. the only time i dropped off was when i wasn’t actively writing and ppl were commenting on stuff from the stone age 😭
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? definitely religio, in which i killed arthur. granted arthur dying is very much canon and literary convention unrelated but for that fic i asked my latin lecturer at the time about my translation of a passage that ended up in it lolol
7. what is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? in flammam flammas. it’s a triumphalist ending, it’s one zuko has absolutely fought for, and now he gets to reap all his rewards. the joy of overcoming adversity to become a stronger, better person, a force for good in the world
8. do you get hate on fics? thankfully not! besides the occasional leery/perhaps poorly phrased comment. but i cut those some slack
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind? yes i love writing smut [40,000 words of plot later—]
10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written? noooo idt i have actually…
11. have you ever had a fic stolen? nip it in the bud was plagiarised once actually. plotline down to the story beats and the actual phrasing. it was pretty brazen and it was upsetting to discover
12. have you ever had a fic translated? nope!
13. have you ever co-written a fic before? i allegedly co-wrote a fic with my ex once… i don’t recall much of the process though so i suspect she actually wrote most of it and i maybe edited/chimed ideas/drew art? otherwise the closest i’ve gotten is collaborating with reikah, which i’ve really loved. i think it’s the ex-grad student in me that loves bouncing ideas with someone else, getting a second opinion, getting pushback. i come up to reikah with all these ideas (usually chunks of prose bc writing is my planning) and i’ll say some shit like “i want chapter 2 of nipfic to be structured in a chiasmus!” and she’s amazing at for instance going in to figure out HOW to practically (re)structure all of that. just like. concrete ways to bring the lofty vision into fruition 🫶
14. what’s your all-time favourite ship? noooo i can’t sayyyyy cos what if it changes?! but i do really love writing zukka atm for their ethnic4ethnic energy. i love writing characters of colour and delving into ideas about empire and colonialism and they’ve been the perfect vehicle for that
15. what’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? well there’s one that i abandoned for uh. political reasons 🤡 i was writing an au based on an event extremely close to my heart and i poured a lot of love into it. but the situation irl took a pretty bad turn and while i wondered at first if i could post anon, i became worried about being harassed or doxxed over it
16. what are your writing strengths? i think im good at writing on a technical level. i used to write poetry and it was a fantastic exercise in wrangling words as an art form. so many lessons carried over into my prose. there’s a sonic element to mine that is i think quite distinctive. plus i can be critical of my own writing and im receptive to feedback
17. what are your writing weaknesses? structure can be a little tricky if there are a lot of moving parts. REALLY grateful to everyone who’s beta read to give a second opinion about those elements. and the bit i hated writing the most in iconoclast was the freakin chapter 2 sports montage. i am not a sporty person
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? ehh. what’s the point? it’s all well and good if there’s a point to it, which isn’t just “look, i the author can speak other languages”. untranslated, i just think a whole bunch of dialogue in another language can have the effect of alienating a reader see donna tartt’s goldfinch
19. first fandom you wrote for? merlin i lied. it’s hetalia genfic i wrote when i was thirteen years old on fanfiction dot net
20. favourite fic you’ve written? recency bias maybe but i’m becoming VERY fond of the iconoclast. it’s definitely not a fic i thought would take off (zukki is a smaller ship! and the story is balls to the wall bonkers in a way that im sure isn’t up some ppls alley!) but i uncovered so many fascinating ideas and concepts while researching i felt like i HAD to try do them justice. i challenged myself writing more violent fight scenes & more ruthless/complex characters. i wrote the fucking haiku 🤡 and the plot is a bit of a beast. but i can sense it coming together and im writing the insane fic i wanna read!

thanks for the tag, @teledild0nix; your post was great! also @phoebe-delia tagged me on this post a bit ago; i loved reading these so much! at this point, i'm not sure who has or hasn't done this yet, so i'm tagging anyone who sees this and wants to try it!

right now it's just drarry; i have also written for hockey RPF and before that, The Social Network, but a lot of that fic is locked on livejournal. before TSN i wrote drarry 😬 which is also locked lol i'm sorry
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. up the arbor to your door (and more) - Hockey RPF (2,889) 2. all the western stars - Drarry (2,819) 3. Bloom - Hockey RPF (2,759) 4. Brand New Colony - Hockey RPF (2,558) 5. Morning to Wake You - Hockey RPF (2,056) my sid/geno hockey RPF era from 2012-2014 was pretty consistent! i do think all the western stars is about to overtake the top spot though, which is insane when you realize those fics are 9 years vs. barely 18 months old 😧
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
yes!! i make every effort to, though sometimes i get overwhelmed (i've fallen off a bit with The Star Splitter and it makes me super guilty!!! i need more hours in the day lol)
6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
i am a happy ending aficionado!! i guess if you ignore the fix-it epilogue, the answer is we hid in catacombs, which is probably the best sid/geno fic i wrote. it was a breakup fic, of course, i remain obsessed with those!
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
i really cannot think of any standout happy ending hockey fics so for this one i will say along each garden wall. sugary sweet ending after what was a genuinely sad narrative; i think i took to heart the people who were like "Close Behind was so angsty we needed more happiness to wash it down!!" and while i felt like that didn't really fit Close Behind, it worked for this one.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
ha. yes! people were Not Happy about Close Behind. someone told me that i should tag it as the main pairing being Draco/Astoria and add an Ambiguous/Open Ending tag, which was very interesting and wrong. some comments i get are just odd, though. like someone got mad at me in The Star Splitter comments for naming a stuffed dragon Orion, who i guess was Sirius' abusive (?) dad?? i had no canon memory of that (and why would Draco care about that???). another person just objected to the entire premise of the fic, which i suppose is fair play if the premise of the fic is an actual philosophical argument, but yeah. it takes all sorts!
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
i do! i like writing smut! happily, yes smut! i don't go too deep into it in every fic, though, and with drarry i've often let myself get more into plot than figuring out the best smut places. i'm in a spot mentally where i really want the smut to contribute to the plot in a significant way, which i think is a result of taking a two year fanfic break and reading nothing but literary/historical fiction in those years? idk i need to write more, it's a total shift from when i wrote hockey.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
yeah, no, not for me!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
i've had some plagiarism incidents, and i guess i ask for this as a serial fic deleter, but some of my fics are on wattpad and i'd prefer they weren't lol.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes! a good few.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
nope
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
lol i cannot answer this question truthfully. my all-time favorite ship is just whatever i'm hyperfixated on at the moment! drarry is probably a contender just because i circled back to it after years away. (am i in a getting back together fic with drarry??)
15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
i finish all my wips 🙂 honestly this is not a flex, i am terrible at abandoning projects and my brain will not let me off the hook ever.
16. What are your writing strengths?
hmm. i think characters, especially large casts of characters! i love to write big ensembles and flesh out characters even in big or small roles, plus their relationships with each other. i also think that i'm much better at giving my worlds/stories a sort of aesthetic now, if that's a writing talent? this is def a new thing to drarry for me, since i took that long fanfic break and wrote/read a bunch of original stuff.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
i work at it, but i still don't know that i'm the best at describing things. i'm better at describing settings than people, that's for sure. i get bored with endless descriptions of someone's eye color and i find myself needing to justify character description with narrative relevance, which is silly.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
i'm a big proponent of '"[English words]," he says in French.' Or like, 'He says something in French', if the POV character wouldn't understand it. i feel like it's less immersion-breaking and more fluid. i write in several languages but wouldn't expect readers to, and i normally write such a close third person perspective that i don't necessarily want the readers to have a translation of a phrase that the POV character wouldn't have, you know?
19. First fandom you wrote for?
i think officially it was veronica mars?
20. Favorite fic you've written?
i'll do one for each AO3 fandom! for TSN, it was Mulligan. for Hockey RPF, Contrapositive. and for Drarry, no surprise, Close Behind.

No point in being shy I guess... to write? Obsessive/possessive vibes, hate sex, enemies to lovers, praising/degrading, anything emotionally charged, and tend to I focus on hands a lot. Also breeding and spit kinks.
🍍 What kind of AUs do you like? Are there any AUs you hate or just generally have beef with?
Modern AUs own my soul!! It's so cool to see how writers adapt into the modern setting. I also really love @valeskafics's film and TV AUs they're so fun to read, especially Scream for Me. ALSO I'm obsessed with cottagecore!Aemond thanks to @babygirlyofthevale's Simple Pleasures.
I don't really have beef with them but soulmate AUs irk me idk why, they just don't make sense to me.
🍇 Is there a particular scene/episode/book/etc that you want to just write a million fics about, over and over? Which one?
Not really? I don't like being too repetitive in my writing because then I'm like well what's the point?
🍊 Who’s a character you don’t write for that often, but keep meaning to write for more? (They’re so interesting! But maybe you have trouble pinning them down, or keep getting distracted by another blorbo…)
I keep saying I want to writing something for Daemon and Aegon, just haven't gotten round to it. And I've thought about writing for Tom Bennett but I can't think of anything interesting enough. But I do really wanna write something with Alicent x Rhaenyra! There's a criminal lack of wlw fics on my masterlist I need to fix that.
🍑 If you could make a connection between your favorite character and another work you care about (whether a crossover/fusion or a wonderfully “pretentious” literary reference) what would it be? How would it work?
I love a good reference ngl. There's this one quote from Wuthering Heights I love: "I know that ghosts have wandered on earth. Be with me always-take any form- drive me mad! Only do not leave me in this abyss where I can not find you!" Like that's so Aemond obsessing over Lucerra's 'death' in Karma is a God.
If we're talking crossovers, I feel like Aemond, Loki and Dream would be the ultimately sad boi trio. I can see them hanging out, complaining about their siblings, listening to Lana Del Rey and roasting met gala looks. (Aemond and Loki showing off their knife skills and Dream's just like "but sand.")
🫐 What’s your favorite underrated thing in your fandom? (A ship that only you seem to write for, a character there’s almost no fics about, a trope that criminally hasn’t been written yet, etc.)
I want more dark!Aemond fics, like let this guy be mean I love him. And more Rhaenyra x Alicent fics. And more Otto thirst.

Tell us a bit about yourself!
Hello! I'm a Black millennial from Southern California who is currently on a "hiatus" from teaching preschool. Prior to teaching three and four year olds, I taught yoga to grown ups (somehow more difficult than being around children) and spent the rest of my free time writing fan fiction and playing video games. Currently, I'm on a roller skating kick while attempting to write the novel I've been trying to execute since 2014. 
How did you find fandom?
I found fandom through Myspace and Livejournal when I was in middle school. RPF was the shit back then and I had notebooks full of "bandom" fan fiction that I'd share with my friends during lunch and passing periods. Things were so simple, then. 
What fandom are you in now and what brought you here?
Publicly, I'm afraid I have to plead the fifth.* 🤐 No, but for real, I'm actually not super active in any fandom space right now! Though I do have many friends and acquaintances from the [redacted] fandom, who I thank every day for supporting my unhinged tweets and fan fiction. Special shout out to my best friend and beta reader for the past ten plus years for bringing me there! That space and support/positive reaction really pushed me into actively pursuing the goal of submitting my original work to magazines. (*If you are so inclined, peeking at some of my followers on Twitter and their accounts could give you a good idea of where I've been, fandom wise).
What’s your favorite book of all time and what do you love about it?
This is a hard question. I don't really have a favorite book because every time I read a book and I really enjoy it, it becomes my favorite book. Genre wise, I tend to stick to literary and I'm kind of a sucker for weird shit and sad shit and offbeat shit about all the nuances of interpersonal relationships. For the past few years, I've been reading pretty much short story collections and nothing else. But recently, I read Red At The Bone by Jacqueline Woodson and it blew my mind. Maybe I'm biased, but stories about families and difficult relationships with mothers always strike me in a very specific place. 
What projects are you working on right now?
Speaking of difficult relationships with mothers, that's one aspect of what I'm working on now. The elusive novel that may or may not take eight more years to complete if I keep working at the same pace. Other than that, I have about a dozen short story ideas at varying stages of completion. I'm a slow writer though, so each one of those will probably sit for another six months before I get around to having something that's actually readable. (Not necessarily likable to my standards, but readable at least).
What are your aspirations as a writer, big picture or small?
I sort of want to do everything. Call it delusional, but I see myself floating around everywhere in terms of writing (mostly because my interests are fleeting, but also because it's fun to do new things!) I've got a few screenplay ideas laying around, plans for multiple novels, plans for eventual short story collections. I'm a big idea sort of person. A big dreamer, I guess. As someone without an MFA and no desire to get one, I can only hope that my writing reaches as many people as possible.
If you could give one piece of advice to beginning writers, what would you tell them?
Write what you want. Don't write what you think other people will want. Oh, and don't compare your character of color's skin tone to food.

again i just wanna say it irks me when i see people breaking out scarequotes around the word writer to describe people who write like rpf or bad smut fanfiction or slasher x reader imagines or w/e because i don’t like the idea of turning “writer” into meaning exclusively “writes things that are good and have literary merit” i think nothing good lies down that path. can we just agree that if you regularly write things you’re a writer and focus on critiquing the actual content being written

Particularly want to pull the last couple paragraphs:
Literary and legal debates aside, RPF is probably most disturbing in what it says about the rest of us: Often, we’re just as obsessed as the writers. Given our celebrity-driven culture, it’s almost unavoidable not to be guilty of stanning (being a stalker and a fan) too hard for someone or peering a bit too deeply into a private life we haven’t been granted permission to access. The Property Brothers having hot twincest might not exactly be your fantasy of choice, but who hasn’t fantasized about a celebrity or at least speculated about their personal life in some way? It’s almost inevitable in an age where social media has leapfrogged past tabloids for direct celebrity access and we no longer need the imaginations of gossip columnists because we have enough fodder for our own illusions. The question is no longer whether RPF is okay — it’s whether we’re ready to admit that this is already how we view celebrities.

I’m willing to write anywhere between 500 - 8000 per commission, with anything above that limit being negotiable. All proofreading and editing is done by me.

I think the rpf thing was a bigger surprise because I'd expected to see Tolkien or Harry Potter, a literary fandom with a long history and some really esteemed and great writers. The only rpf I'd ever seen was usually kpop or sports related, I honestly didn't even know there was an unironic rpf community for politics, though I guess I can see why. It didn't change my perception in a negative way, but I do find it funny, mostly because my biggest question is 'what sort of enjoyment do you get from writing that and how were you persuaded to come over this way'.
I'm not on any high ground as I say this, obviously. I've written some bizarre erotica.
I just think people's media diet and how that influences their writing style, themes, characters they enjoy, is so, so interesting, hence my tendency to snoop and find all sorts of out there stuff. Particularly people who bring a lot of substance to rather shallow fandoms are really cool to me because it's like "where did you develop your style, what are your influences, are there other fanworks that inspire you?" Clearly they had outside influences to be so imaginative and spawn so much depth where there previously was none.
I usually avoid this subject when it's brought up in a negative fashion bc I'm frankly not all that interested in condemning people for their media tastes or how they choose to explore troublesome themes, characters and media franchises. Not that there's never anything worth scrutinizing I'm just not interested in calling someone bad or their work bad, but rather exploring a troublesome execution or dissecting a dysfunctional framing or perspective. Stuff like that takes a lot of care and nuance, especially if you intend for it to be a constructive learning experience for the community and not just a sensationalist tear down of someone's artistic effort based on shallow perceptions of morality.
I don't really like hurting people and I don't really enjoy how spiteful and elitist writing circles can be. Turns out good criticism is actually an artform of its own. Long ramble just to nod vaguely at my about and explain my whole "i don't want to discuss other fandom people", I actually do I just don't want to do so in a punitive, mocking way.

Sorry I am kind of bad at checking and remembering to respond to messages!! And thank you I really am just a book/criticism nerd so a lot of my writing is responses to other things I read even if thats not explicit or clear in the writing.
