It all started with a... duck?

I finished watching The Golden Girls last night and I have Thoughts about those final two episodes. So here's a little elaborate analysis because I have to get them off my chest lol

(under the cut because unfortunately I'm too long-winded for anyone's good)

Usually I despise final episodes of shows where they're saying goodbye and things are changing forever. Because the characters' lives are being upturned, often out of the blue, and it usually feels so unsatisfying. But something about the way this was done made it such a good, fitting ending, that there really couldn't have been a better way to finish things off.

It's like, there really was no other way this should've ended -- because yeah, everything is changing, but it's also okay, because everything is changing thanks to, rather than in spite of, the past 7 seasons.

It's an ending that wraps everything up pretty neatly, and it seems that every character got their own emotional arc. For a show with basically no continuity it's amazing how they managed to make it feel like all seven seasons had been building up to this conclusion all along.

Dorothy gets married and she leaves, because of course she does. There's no way she could've stayed there with them and her husband. And as much as I would've loved to imagine the four girls living together in that house forever, the way they handled it, the way Dorothy was able to open up to a new, serious relationship only because she had lived with Blanche and Rose (and Sophia) for so long, only solidified how much these four women mean to each other. It's like, by marrying Lucas, Dorothy is able to show just how much her friends (who at this point have become her family) mean to her.

And that's such a huge part of why I loved this ending so much. It's not just a farewell, it's not just a way to get Dorothy out of the way and leave a window open for a possible spin-off with the remaining three girls. It's an ending that does not only her justice, but all of them. It's a little tribute to everything they meant to each other over the years, and a reassurance that sure, life has changed and so have their circumstances, but even in her marriage to Lucas, Dorothy is carrying Rose and Blanche and Sophia's love with her. Because she wouldn't have been able to marry him if they hadn't loved her so much, and she hadn't loved them in return.

Rose, Blanche, and even Sophia are left together, and it could've been handled so, so much worse. The writing team could've taken it for granted so easily: of course Dorothy leaves because she gets married, so of course Rose and Blanche (and maybe Sophia) stay together. It just makes sense!

But instead of taking the easy route and paying barely no attention to any potential for an emotional conclusion there, the writers took the opportunity to put Rose and Blanche in a position of almost having to say goodbye to each other, too, and gave Sophia the opportunity to make them realise just how much they need each other. Which, in turn, showed her (and them) how much they need Sophia, too.

It leaves the three of them feeling not as the leftovers, or the people who were ditched because Dorothy went off with someone else, but as three women who very consciously, very lovingly chose each other in spite of this big change. And you're left feeling happy for them staying together instead of bitter about them being left behind.

And that final scene? Where Dorothy leaves and she keeps coming back again because she misses them already, and she really doesn't want to say goodbye? When finally, Rose and Blanche and Sophia are left waiting there, in silence, and they realise Dorothy really isn't coming back this time? I loved that. I've seen plenty of scenes where characters have to say goodbye at the end of a show, and every single one of them left me with the bitter aftertaste of what felt like an unresolved ending.

But this? This works, because this time it's not just the audience being left behind. It's Dorothy, who keeps coming back because she's going to miss them so much. It's the three remaining girls, standing in that room, waiting for Dorothy to return and slowly realising she's really gone this time.

And this time, as an audience, you're not the only one being left behind. You're standing there, right next to Rose, Blanche, and Sophia. You're sharing the characters' hurt, in fact they're probably feeling even worse than you are, and that's what makes it such a good ending to me: it's an ending that empathises with the audience.

Richard Cole [ tour manager ] would take me to use the limo so I could go to the lab because the band would take at least an hour to shower and get ready to go out at night, so, the limos would be crowded around the hotels without doing anything.

So as soon as my envelopes with the films were ready to be taken, he’d let me use the limo to go to the lab and I’d put the envelopes in the delivery box outside, which they’d already wait for, so that the employees could have the photos ready the next morning.

The lab would get six contact sheets for each roll of film in black and white, one for each member of the band, one for Peter and one for me.

When they were delivered in my room by noon the next day, all in a rush, I had to set up each collage and put them under the door of each one of them. With the colored photos, the negatives (?) were delivered to me in boxes and I’d carry a slide projection, and spend each night awake looking at them.

im literally only on day 2 of me trying to do better this year but I can definitely confirm: if you feel sad/out of sorts/general malaise and despair, PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN. go outside and touch some grass. walk through your neighborhood (or run, if you want an extra endorphin boost). be reminded of the world you are immediately a part of and the places you can see whenever you want. do it for like 45 minutes and then come back and read a book. idk it might fix you!!!!

I love saying how much I love birds everywhere all the time you don't even knooowee. Like. God they are so awesome. I love accipiter. I love raptors I love falconry so much. I love shoving bird symbolism into my favorite characters. There's something to be said about the process of trust building between falconers and sparrowhawks in particular. But thats a ramble for when I've tidied my thoughts and screamed about it on discord to my friends 8 million times.

ALSO! excellent news my #1 fave mandopop singer circa 2019ish is coming to Vancouver again!!!!!! The first time he was here was in winter of 2018/2019 ANDHE PLAYED THE UNIVERSITY ARENA FIVE MINUTES WALK AWAY FROM MY DORM AT THE TIME AND I DIDNT KNOW he was starting to climb the sidney charts and when he topped it i saw a poster on campus for the concert and it was dated three days prior and i was soooooo pissed. I was listening to his songs on my headphones doing homework while he performed it live two blocks away im still so mad. But now hes back!!! In a way bigger venue too like 5x bigger and im gonna be!!!! There!!! Even tho i dont like his recent songs very much but hes such an entertainer he does comedy sets between songs and he has a wayyy bigger budget for costumes and dancers and sets this tour at leadt in china i hope to see that here too!!

how does his season of the bachelorette play out?

SO he's competing for the heart of kelsie (a 26 year old second grade teacher from wisconsin who was runner-up in the previous season of the bachelor because it was kind of a coin flip for jacob (27, small business owner (he runs a crossfit gym)); he preferred blondes and kelsie was one of six brunettes that season who didn't have a head full of blonde highlights so he said it was a really hard decision but privately that's kind of what it came down to; him and his final pick break up while kelsie's season is airing). jake Did Not sign up to go on the show himself — his older brother & sister nominated him one night after they all got drunk hanging out and when the show reached out they convinced him to say yes to going on.

kelsie's whole thing in interviews after being named the bachelorette was saying that she knows she'll be able to keep the men in line 'because as a second grade teacher she's used to being on her toes!' except the show took that as a challenge and her cast was mostly comprised of just the most volatile mix of personalities they could find.

a lot of viewers found jake kind of bland for the first half of the season; a nice midwestern guy who stayed out of drama, had sweet enough moments with kelsie, and didn't make funny reaction faces for the editing team to splice in as it aired.

he had a twitter-beloved bromance with the guy who would go on to become kelsie's final pick (kameron with a k, a 26 year old wedding photographer from florida. production used the two of them hanging out as their chill guy b-roll while the rest of the men devolved into pvp warfare) & as the show went on he opened up about the injury that ended his hockey career while he was at BU. kelsie was a college volleyball player 'and could, like, totally relate!'

mostly she liked that he used his post-injury communications degree to work as a communications director for a junior hockey team 'because it meant that they both liked working with kids!'

(the show listed his job title as 'sports information director')

he had his second one-on-one before hometowns, where viewers fell in love with him because him and kelsie went ice-skating with his younger brother for the day portion of the date. most people thought she was going to dump him here because she didn't seem that into him romantically compared to some other guys, but robbie (27, job listed as 'crypto guy') had an absolutely abysmal hometown date wherein kelsie felt attacked & like robbie didn't stick up for her, and also robbie's sister-in-law was basically like Yeah They're Just Like This.

by fantasy suite week it was pretty clear who kelsie's two frontrunners were (kameron with a k & miles, 28, a travel agent) BUT there ended up being some drama between her & them re: Did They Use The Fantasy Suites To Fuck Or What so she sent jake home separate from a rose ceremony.

in his limo exit interview jake looked stoically out the window and was pretty much like, sometimes it hurts worse to lose your dreams in a really understandable way, because you run out of arguments with the universe and start to wonder if you’re not meant to get what you want. etc etc etc.

so basically everyone fell in love w him at his hometown and he was a cute, unproblematic guy who had kelsie’s stamp of approval during the rest of the season + an appropriately bittersweet limo exit. public opinion soured a little bit on both kameron AND miles after their fantasy suite debacle because the world 'slut shaming' got tossed around, no one wanted robbie after seeing his family, and the rest of the guys were either blander than jake or actual scum who no one would root for.

so jake was the fan favorite to get named bachelor almost by default and really production’s only pick if they wanted a guy from this season. he didn't actually fall in love w kelsie but he liked her fine and the process did make him start thinking that he Wanted a big, serious, fall-in-love forever relationship.

jason was the producer assigned to jake, because nick in this universe is still a maple leafs prospect & jason himself still played hockey to a certain point before also stopping, so all the other producers was hoping they'd Bond. jason began to genuinely like jake as a person and was glad he made jason’s life relatively easy by not getting into any shit jason would need to dig into for the show. also, by not having any old racist tweets for the fans to unearth.

jason being so chill was part of the reason jake accepted the bachelor position — he trusted him to keep things chill again. & then the plot of the fic itself will Follow From There!

Just finished watching the first episode of the paradox live anime

i gotta say, visually it looks great. the cg is really good and blends in with everything well so that it’s not particularly off putting. so far i think it’s pretty good at setting up the story and following the drama cd plot - though it is rearranged to follow bae this episode (sorta wished that we had akyr in the crowd outside club paradox but w/e) - and adding a few extra things here and there to fill things out.

i really liked being able to see where everyone lives and their casual clothes apart what we usually see in the MVs and stuff. also its nice seeing how phantommetals are used since i had a very hard time visualizing it but tbh i have mixed feelings…

considering the after effects phantom metals are supposed to leave the user after use, it feels like they just… exist. like they just float around the user on stage and its not really incorporated into the song. maybe this’ll change when we see more performances, but i won’t hold my breath on that.

like when they were revealed for the first time a year + ago it was cool seeing what each character had, but I didn’t really get how they fit in with their stage performances. like hajun for example, his are masks. how would you fit in a bunch of masquerade masks when performing something like galaxy or fabulous. or how would you incorporate zen’s rajin (?) in with a song like call for familiez? shiki’s grim reaper in life is beautiful?

basically, is it really worth it to have a pstd episode after performing and having something equivalent to pretty lights floating around you? also, they didn’t really show anyone getting a trap response. like i get it bc it’s the first episode (i guess allen slept his off? but we’d probably see it after they went back to their room backstage at the start) but it’s sorta… weird. shiki had an episode after seeing nayuta, but just plot foreshadowing.

also, i shouldn’t compare but i will. although hypnosis mic’s animation isnt as nice as paradox live’s, they still made actual use of illusions when on stage which made it interesting to watch. like each member has their own mic and speakers to match their character, and things actually appeared on stage based on what they were rapping about. the formatting is different since one is a rap battle and the other is a round robin individual performance but still…
