The Incredible Hulk (1968) #267
#I was so thrown by this because you would expect the Hulk’s dream to be some kind of paradise where he’s left alone or with his few friends#and not what is essentially an idealized version of Bruce’s life#but that’s because this arc is leaning really hard into that Bruce and the Hulk are one and the same#this is the first ever depiction of Bruce’s parents#I have an awareness of Bruce’s later established background but even without that I think the bit with his parents here feels a little off#like it’s too picturesque#and I’m intrigued by the transition from the idea that one day Bruce’s dreams of being a scientist will be fulfilled#to the reality of how he was viewed and talked to by General Ross#like the Hulk’s dream breaks down because Betty is in it but also Betty is there in reality with him#but even without that his ‘dream’ involved being degraded and the build-up to the accident with the gamma bomb#like Bruce and/or the Hulk even when manipulated to live out a fantasy can’t actually view their life going in any other direction#also hmm when Doc Samson went into Bruce’s head he saw human Bruce go through ordinary things#like being accidentally burned by an appliance as a child and scolded by a teacher as a teenager#and the Hulk also viewing that and then reacting to it as though it was happening to him#whereas this is doing the Bruce in the Hulk’s body thing#I assume that’s intended as part of the fantasy where this is a conception of what Bruce being cured would look like#but the Hulk obviously doesn't want that#and in the issue after this Bruce specifically rejects that as an acceptable solution because he wants to be a regular human#so it's actually neither of theirs' fantasy#marvel#bruce banner#my posts#comic panels

THE INCREDIBLE HULK #446-447 OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 1996 BY PETER DAVID, ANGEL MEDINA, MIKE DEODATO JR, ROBIN RIGGS, TOM WEGRZYN AND GLYNIS OLIVER
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS (FROM MARVEL DATABASE)
Following the destruction of Onslaught, the United States Army has been called to New York City to contain the Hulk, who has been unconscious since the powerful entity was destroyed. Overseeing the operation is Colonel St. Lawrence who has the Hulk's body airlifted out of Central Park. As the Hulk is being pulled out, the brute suddenly has a nightmare about his battle with Onslaught, a battle that ended with Bruce Banner and the Hulk being separated and Banner sacrificing his life with Earth's mightiest heroes to destroy the creature. Thrown into a rage, the Hulk fights himself free from his bonds. At the risk of falling to the city below, the Hulk grabs the rope that was suspending him from the helicopter. As the Hulk struggles for purchase, a soldier shoots him. It's a lucky shot that makes the Hulk let go and sends him crashing down into the ruined city below.
Meanwhile, back at a Pantheon safe-house, Paris and Atalanta monitor Janis Jones from the security monitors. As Janis grabs her things, they are unconcerned about her escaping because their scans reveal that she had no superhuman powers and her staff appears to be an ordinary stick. However, they are surprised when the staff is able to blast the door to her room right open. Janis tries to sneak out through a locker room where she is spotted by a Pantheon staffer taking a shower. When Atalanta tries to stop Janis, she takes the man hostage and uses him as a shield allowing her to slip away before Atalanta can stop her.
Back in Times Square, that Hulk's radiation levels continue to climb. As such the military is forced to wear hazmat suits and attempt to contain him in a radiation proof cage. The Hulk smashes the cage. His body continues to give off more deadly radiation and increase in mass. Wracked with pain, the Hulk claws at his face, he rips off a chunk of skin from his face. Seeing this, one of the soldiers becomes violently ill and tears of his helmet so he can throw up. Instead, he is flash fried by the radiation being given off by the Hulk. As the pain and body mass continues to grow, the Hulk leaps away. Watching the fragmented news reports from her home, Betty Banner packs a bag and leaves to try and catch up with her husband. While back at the Pantheon safehouse, Janis continues to flee from Atalanta. When she gets clear she wonders for a moment if this complex is one of the many ones that saved the last humans of her future world when she runs into Ajax. Janis leaps over the massive simpleton, leaving him open to Atalanta's arrows. While Atalanta is busy checking to see if Ajax is okay, Janis manages to slip out through a ventilation shaft.

Back in New York City, the Hulk's radiation continues to rage out of control. However, the gamma-spawned monster is so wracked with pain he cannot move any further. This allows the military manages to drop the containment unit on the Hulk. But, much to their surprise, the Hulk's radiation levels are so hot that the unit melts, covering the Hulk's body in the metal. With the creature finally contained, Colonel St. Lawrence begins to plan what to do with the Hulk next. At that moment along a lonely stretch of road, Janis Jones spots a passing van and flags it down. She is greeted by the hippies on board who welcome her to join them on their ride to New York where they intend to pray for Earth's fallen heroes. Janis agrees to accompany them and is introduced to them all, particularly a man named Alex, who prefers to go by the name Wild Man.

Following the final battle with Onslaught, the Hulk's radiation levels began to spike to dangerous levels. In an attempt to contain the Hulk, the military tried to trap him in a radiation shielded cage. Instead, the cage melted turning the Hulk into a living statue in the middle of Central Park. Before the military could move the Hulk to a containment facility, his body quickly became a make-shift memorial for the heroes who were seemingly killed in the final battle against Onslaught. However, because the "statute" is dangerously radioactive, the military has set up a perimeter to keep people away. Among the people gathered is Betty Banner who demands to get close to the statue. Also among the people is Janis Jones, who remembers Betty from her future as her father had her ashes in his trophy room. The soldier shows Betty how dangerous the Hulk "statue" is by tossing a rock at it. When it incinerates before getting close enough to hit the Hulk, proves to Betty that it is too dangerous. Betty is then approached by Alex Wildman, who asks to speak to her because he has been having strange dreams. Understandably disturbed by this revelation, Betty tries to get away from Wildman and bumps into CIA agent Henry Gyrich. Gyrich also demands to talk to her and seeing that she has no choice, decides to accompany Gyrich to answer his questions.
Seeing Betty being led away, Alex suddenly start screaming in pain and demands to get close to the statue. Janis Jones watches as Wildman fights his way past the soldiers to try and get near the Hulk. Suddenly, in the middle of the madness, Alex Wildman is struck by a bolt of lightning and collapses to the ground. While not far away, Betty is taken to a nearby med-test where she is introduced to Colonel St. Lawrence. After St. Lawrence explains how she was inspired by meeting Betty's misogynistic father, General Ross. Getting to the point, the Colonel asks Betty to help convince the Hulk to surrender if he ever breaks free. Betty doesn't provide an answer and after a few tense moments, Betty is allowed to leave. While back at the memorial, Janis Jones continues to watch the Hulk statue as the rain begins to fall. Also watching is Jason, of the Pantheon. Not far away, Henry Gyrich goes to a limo and sits with Paris, the new leader of the Pantheon. Paris then offers the Pantheon's resources to the United States government now that the Fantastic Four and the Avengers are now seemingly dead, in order to fill the void they left behind. When Gyrich asks what Paris' motivations are, Paris explains that he is merely interested in money. Gyrich cannot commit to anything until he speaks to his people. Suddenly they Paris is contacted by Jason who tells him that something is happening at the Hulk "statue".
Tumblr media
Suddenly, there is a massive explosion and when the smoke clears, everyone is surprised to see that the Hulk is now free. Jason and the soldiers on site begin to attack, prompting Janis to spring into action to help the Hulk. The Hulk responds to his attackers by clapping his hands together, the shockwaves of which cause the soldiers to tumble to the ground. When a military helicopter tries to open fire on the Hulk, it is blasted out of the sky by Janis. As Janis convinces the Hulk to let her tag along with him, Betty approaches the Hulk and tells him to let her help him. The Hulk turns to Betty and tells her that he has never seen her in his life. This causes Betty to break down in tears as the Hulk leaps away with Janis riding on his back.

REVIEW
All the sequences with The Hulk are fast-paced. The sequences with the Pantheon and the rest, not so much. But something has to slow this down, because this two issues are basically one.
Banner and Hulk get separated more often than water and oil. This time because of Onslaught (and Heroes Reborn, and why not, the smell of bankruptcy).
I haven’t seen Hulk ripping his face off before, that was new. The other question is who this Hulk is now, as it seems like Banner took his memories with him. Shouldn’t this Hulk at least remember his “Hulk” moments? How can you even separate them anyway. I am sure all this will be revealed once Banner comes back.
The art is a bit extreme, a bit too “unrealistic” if there is such thing in super-hero comics. Deodato at least manages to do a pretty Hulk, though.
I give these issues a score of 7

Summary: Years after the final battle against Thanos; after Tony and Natasha died and Steve stayed in the past, after Bruce became Professor Hulk and Clint retired again, their daughters are all grown up with children of their own. In their defence, they didn’t realize that their parents’ time fuckery and infinity stone usage would pass onto the newest generation, leaving them with six superpowered girls, each with the power of an Infinity Stone. And they certainly never expected the girls, the self proclaimed New Avengers, to decide to fix the mistakes that their grandparents made, starting back at the very beginning, with the Battle of Manhattan. And no, you can’t ask about their dad, thank you.
Tumblr media
Name: Anya Barton
Story: What Happened In Budapest (Doesn’t Stay In Budapest)
Face claim:  Emma Stone
Love interest: Bucky Barnes
Summary:  What happened in Budapest?  Clint and Natasha took out an arms dealer, saved the world, had a baby, learned that the Red Room lied about sterilizing Natasha, and killed a few people.  Now all grown up, Anya Barton is the newest SHIELD recruit, and almost immediately, aliens invade and a god brainwashes her father; that’s a hell of a first day.  But Anya is the daughter of two of the greatest spies in the world, she’s not going down without a fight.  Not when aliens invade, not when SHIELD is revealed to be Hydra and she has to go off the grid, and definitely not when, in Budapest of all places, she meets a man with a metal arm who’s also trying to hide from whatever is left of Hydra.
Tumblr media
Name: Aphrodite
Story: The Course of True Love (Never Did Run Smooth)
Face claim:  Vanessa Morgan
Love interest: Thor
Summary: Aphrodite could barely remember her home planet of Olympus, thanks to Odin destroying it when she was a child.  As the sole survivor of the Olympian gods, Odin decided that she was “useful” enough to keep, and brought her to Asgard.  Clearly he’d never considered the consequences of murdering her entire world and taking her hostage, as he somehow still expected her to be loyal to her.  Unfortunately for Odin, that plan was as stupid as the rest of his ideas; Aphrodite had never been loyal to him, her loyalty had always been to the next king of Asgard, and when he sends Thor to earth, he’ll learn just how far a goddess of love is willing to go to make sure he doesn’t cost her another family.
Tumblr media
Name: Aria Parker
Story: The Art of Disappearing
Face claim:  Natalie Dormer
Love interest: Steve Rogers
Summary: Peter Parker was hardly the first enhanced Parker.  His aunt Aria had been born with the ability to control the elements.  At eighteen years of age, she dropped off the face of the earth, and no one, not even her cousins Ben and Richard, had any idea where she’d gone.  Most people thought she was dead, until ten years later when she helped Clint Barton find his dog in Central Park, and somehow befriending he and Natasha Romanov.  Even then, though, most of the world didn’t know who or where she was; not until Shield fell apart and Natasha found herself reaching out to the only person she trusted who had no affiliation with Shield or Hydra.
Tumblr media
Name: Aris Stark
Story: Forged In Iron
Face claim: Olivia Holt
Love Interest: Peter Parker
Summary: All Aris Stark wanted to do was train for the Olympics - gymnastics, specifically - and go on dates with Peter. Of course, being Iron Man's daughter and Spiderman's girlfriends complicated things, but Aris could handle complicated. Everything was perfect, until both her dad and boyfriend hopped on a ship to outer space while some crazy alien tried to destroy the universe. She waited in the compound, preparing all of the ways that she would yell at them for scaring her. And then she woke up, the compound on fire and crumbling around her, Tony and Peter nowhere to be found. And if that weren't confusing enough, suddenly she was glowing.
Tumblr media
Name: Asteria “Stargirl” Quill
Story: Made Of Stardust
Face claim:  Chloe Grace Moretz
Summary: If Peter Quill had known that some species didn’t have gestation periods, he might have been a lot more selective about who he slept with.  But, he hadn’t, and so, he wasn’t.  And so, he found himself with an infant daughter.  Half alien, all ravager, Asteria “Stargirl” Quill is all about profit and adventure, just like her dad.  But when a fight breaks out during a sale, and she and her dad get arrested with a green girl, a racoon, and a tree, everything is about to change.
Tumblr media
Name: Athena Stark
Story: Iron Princess
Face claim: Zoey Deutch
Love Interest: Peter Parker
Summary: Athena Stark had a plan. She was going to be the valedictorian for her grade at Midtown High, then an undergrad in Poli Sci at Yale, then law school at Harvard, and then she would become president of the United States. She would change the laws in order to better protect superheroes like her father, and she would make him proud. But then her dad brings Spiderman to Berlin for a fight, and Peter Parker comes back talking about a Stark Internship that definitely doesn't exist. Athena's life plan never accounted for Superhero Liaison, let alone for becoming a superhero herself, but Starks are made of iron and Athena will make it work.

Name: Aurora Hansen Stark
Story: The Future In Silver and Gold
Face claim:  Bailee Madison

Love Interest: Stefania Raine
Summary: Under the scars, white hair, and leather ensemble, Stefania Raine recognized Jameson Barrett — the very best friend she thought to have seen die two years prior, when aliens invaded New York. In the middle of the chaos, Stefania lost sight of her best friend, but refused to let the girl go again — even if that meant teaming up with a recently un-brainwashed soldier to find her.
With a faulting memory and unbalanced emotions, Jameson knew that accepting that she used to have a name wasn’t enough of a step to becoming a functional person. So, when she runs into the man from the bridge, from the helicarriers — the man who refused to fight — and he asks for her help in finding her ex-partner and the closest thing she had to a friend, she doesn’t say no.

Story: Fear No Evil
Face claim: Danielle Rose Russell
Love Interest: Grayson Frost
Summary: Kassandra Maximoff was no stranger to fear; she’d been afraid ever since her parents were killed by a Stark bomb, since she spent those days hiding with her siblings, wondering if any moment might be her last, waiting for Tony Stark to kill her too. So when Strucker offered she and her siblings the opportunity to be strong, to protect their country, to not be afraid, they took it. By the time they found out he was HYDRA, it was too late to escape. The siblings spent months being tortured, knowing exactly what would come if they defected. Kassandra had long since accepted her fate, had long since given up hope. And then the Avengers break into their facility.

Story: Skyscraper
AO3 | FFNET | WATTPAD
Face claim:  Sophie Turner & Summer Fontana
Summary: Child genius turned orphan, Katarina was counting on her own hacking skills to keep her under the radar.  And it does, until she gets caught hacking into Stark industries, looking for answers regarding the aliens that killed her parents in New York, and suddenly she’s not just on the radar, she’s on Tony Stark’s own radar.  When he decides to take her in, no one expects it to go well, but she soon makes a place for herself on the team and in their hearts.  She’s not a superhero, far from it, but she’s a hero in her own right, and nothing comes between Katarina and her family; not her biological family, not the weird group of misfits and gods that she calls her own.

Summary: No one told Steve that his DNA was going to be used to breed a new super soldier - or that it was going to fail.  No one told him that a civilian, Angie Martinelli, was going to give birth to his son, Caleb Rogers, or that Caleb wouldn’t be a super soldier.  No one told him that Caleb was going to have a daughter, Lara, and absolutely no one told him that on her fifth birthday, his granddaughter was going to be kidnapped by Hydra, turned into a super soldier, frozen over and over again, tortured and brainwashed endlessly, and eventually get partnered with the Winter Soldier.  But suddenly he’s in the future, suddenly he’s fought aliens, and suddenly солдат and призрак - the Soldier and the Ghost, Bucky and Lara - are attacking Nick Fury in the middle of DC.  Suddenly Steve is on the run with Natasha, suddenly they’re in a Hydra facility underneath a bunker, and suddenly the computerized ghost of Arnim Zola is telling them everything.  And while it feels sudden to Steve, Project Insight and its enforcers have been seventy years in the making, and no matter how much he wants to cling to the last remains of his family, they might be beyond saving.

Name: Lillian “Lili” Rogers
Story: To The End Of The World
Face claim: Ali Liebert (in Bomb Girls)

Summary: Lili Rogers would do anything for her brother.  Lie and steal to get his medication, agree not to flirt with his best friend despite her eternal crush, even fake her way into the US army.  Of course, it didn’t take long before someone figured out that Liam Rogers was actually Lillian Rogers; but thankfully she was found out by Peggy Carter, who quickly hired her as her secretary and liason to the Howling Commandos.  Lili honestly couldn’t have cared less, until she found out that the elite force was led by none other than her brother - who had somehow doubled in size - with the love of her life as his right hand man.

Summary:  Mia Pierce has been raised as a Hydra pawn since the day she was born. Her father, Alexander Pierce, believed that she was the future of Hydra, someone that they could teach to worship the organization without brainwashing, that could be raised as a public figure and eventually positioned in whichever political office they needed her in.  But Mia was too curious for her own good, asked too many questions, and tried to tell too many secrets, and so she was punished, and forced to comply.  But after her father died, and Winter escaped, the Avengers broke into her latest facility, and suddenly Mia is free for the first time in her life.

Name: Nerio
Story: A Thousand Years
Face claim: Caity Lotz
Love Interest: Thor
Summary: Let’s do a head count here. Your brother, the demigod. A super soldier, living legend who kinda lives up to the legend. A man with breathtaking anger management issues. A couple of master assassins.  An actual warrior goddess, and you, big fella, you’ve managed to piss off every single one of them.
When Emperor Theodoseus began his persecution of paganism, Nerio fled Rome.  The warrior goddess travelled the universe for centuries, training and fighting and surviving, before she finally settled on Earth, blending in as a normal human.  She never intended to reveal her true identity until one day she hears about a hammer landing somewhere in America.
She knew who it was, of course, how could she ever forget?  But she said nothing, did nothing, and kept her ear to the ground.  And then she hears rumours that Loki has come to Earth and stolen the tesseract, and Nerio knows that it’s time for her to act.  But it had been centuries since she had left Asgard, and she was horribly unprepared for reuniting with her first love in order to fight her former best friend.

Name: Nikki Rogers
Story: This Is Your Story
AO3 | FFNet | Wattpad
Face claim:  Meg Donnelly
Love interest: Peter Parker
Summary: Before Steve Rogers hit the ice, American scientists collected as many sources of DNA as they could in the hope that one day it could be used to create another super soldier.  When SHIELD–or technically Hydra– finally tried, they were disappointed to get a girl, and were quick to toss her aside.  Raised by the best of the best, to be a weapon while still living as a semi-normal girl–as normal as you can be when you’re raised by Peggy Carter, and Natasha Romanov after her, and knowing that your father is Captain America himself–Nikki is as shocked as anyone when her father is finally unfrozen and she’s even more excited when he gets custody over her.  It’s going to take some time for them to find a good rhythm, especially with aliens and Hydra and robots trying to destroy them, but family is worth the effort.

Story: Stardust In My Soul
Faceclaim: Ginny Gardner
Love Interest: Peter Parker
Summary: The first time that Carol Danvers returned to Earth after saving the Skrulls was not after The Snap but actually in 2001, also the year that she met Grant Rogers, grandson to Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers.  And in 2002, after returning to space, Starling Danvers-Rogers is born.  Part super-soldier and part infinity stone, with Kree blood running through her veins, it was no surprise that Starling was a bit tougher than the average Terran, but no one expected her to be able to survive an attempted sacrifice on Vormir.  And yet, when her great-grandfather’s old enemy throws her over the cliff in hopes of obtaining the soul stone, she does not die.  Instead, through fate or luck, Starling breaks all known laws of the universe and absorbs the power of the stone herself.  And of course that’s when a maniacal god with the tesseract tries to take over Earth, and Starling goes to her parents’ planet for the first time in her life, only to meet her deceased great-grandfather
Tumblr media
Name: Stefania Raine
Story: Til The End Of The Line
Faceclaim: Sofia Carson
Love Interest: Jameson Barrett
Summary: Under the scars, white hair, and leather ensemble, Stefania Raine recognized Jameson Barrett — the very best friend she thought to have seen die two years prior, when aliens invaded New York. But for the other girl, Jameson Barrett was buried deeper; she only ever remembered being марионетка, The Puppet, and being sent there with The Soldier to end Nicholas Fury’s life.
Tumblr media
Name: Stella Carter
Story: Falling Star
Faceclaim: Brec Bassinger
Love Interest: Peter Parker
Summary: SHIELD had always been a part of Stella Carter’s legacy.  With her aunt as the founder and her older sister as one of their top agents, it was a part of her life that she couldn’t imagine living without.  She never saw it as dangerous, really, until SHIELD fell apart, and Stella Carter disappeared.  Sharon Carter searched high and low for her little sister, but she was nowhere to be found; not until the Avengers stormed an abandoned HYDRA base and found the youngest Carter in chains in the basement.  With new superpowers and the Carter need to help people, Stella was quick to brand herself as a new hero, Starr Captain, styled after her lifelong hero and rescuer, Captain America himself.  And despite everyone’s warnings, balancing superheroism and teenagehood was a piece of cake.  Or it was, until the Avengers fell apart and Sharon decided that her sister needed a fresh start in New York City, at Midtown High.  Even that could have been easy, if only Ned Leeds and Peter Parker hadn’t decided to pursue the mystery that was Stella Carter; if only she hadn’t needed to team up with Spiderman, the same boy she fought against at an airport in Berlin.
Tumblr media
Name: Stephanie Carter
Story: What’s in a Name?
Face claim:  Katie McGrath
Love interest: Tony Stark
Summary: As if being the daughter of Peggy freaking Carter wasn’t pressure enough, her parents had to go and name her after Steve Rogers.  Raised side by side with her god-brother Tony, Stephanie Carter has always taken solace in the fact that at least one person understood the legacy that had been forced upon her.  When she was recruited to SHIELD Steph was wary.  When Tony became Iron Man, she was concerned.  When he suddenly named her his sole inheritor of everything including his company-Pepper Potts was his CEO but she would own Stark Industries-concern grew to worry.  When her own damn namesake was found alive, Steph decided that enough was enough.  She and Tony had been partners in everything; from high school labs to MIT dorms to carrying on impossible legacies, there was no reason that superheroes shouldn’t be next on the list.  There’s a new Agent Carter around, and she only has one goal.  Protect Tony Stark.
Tumblr media
Name: Stephanie Rogers-Parker
Story: The Final Countdown
Faceclaim: Meg Donnelly
Name: Tesla Banner
Story: My Father’s Daughter
Face claim:  Natalia Dyer
Love interest: Peter Parker
Summary:  Tesla Banner had always known who her father was, of course.  She was born only a week before the Hulk Incident, and her mom had never hidden anything from her.  Neither had her grandfather, of course, but even a young child could tell that he had his own motives.  She had always known who he was, but she didn’t meet him until she was eleven, and aliens had just tried to invade.  For the next few years, every other weekend is spent with her dad and whichever Avengers are around; and when he disappears from the face of the planet, she continues to visit the remaining team.  And then her grandfather sparks a civil war within the team and her mom moves them from DC to New York for good.  But just when she thinks she’s settling into her new home and her new school, she meets a boy who seems to know just a bit too much about her dad’s closest friends.
Tumblr media
Name: Trinity Rhodes
Story: Lighting The Way
Face claim:  Kat Graham
Love Interest: Steve Rogers
Summary: Being the daughter of an Air Force Colonel was very anxiety inducing, thank you for asking.  Especially when your mom was also in the Air Force and went missing when you weren’t even a year old.  Luckily, Trinity Rhodes has always had her uncle and second father figure Tony to keep her company and distract her from the paralyzing fear that overtook her every time her dad was away.  James Rhodes may have been a military man in constant danger, but Tony was a business man, he wasn’t in any real danger.  And then both of them went to Afghanistan.

For the week of 1 July 2019
Quick Bits:
Aero #1 is an impressive solo debut for the Chinese original heroine spinning out of War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas in North America and her original stories published in China. The first story is an English adaptation of one originally published in Chinese from Zhou Liefen and Keng, with the adaptation by Greg Pak, letters by Joe Caramagna. The artwork from Keng is stunning. There’s also an original back-up from Pak, Pop Mhan, Federico Blee, and Caramagna that ties in more directly to New Agents of Atlas with Aero learning more about Wave’s origin.

Tumblr media
Age of X-Man: Prisoner X #5 concludes another of these minis setting up for the finale in Age of X-Man: Omega. Vita Ayala, Germán Peralta, Matt Horak, Mike Spicer, and Joe Sabino deliver an entertaining story here of Bishop and his crew fighting back against their captor and figuring out who put them in this mess. Gorgeous artwork from Peralta, Horak, and Spicer.

Tumblr media
Analog #6 returns from the break with this action-packed start to the new arc. Great art from David O’Sullivan and Mike Spicer. Also, an interesting reveal of what people still do post-Internet.

Tumblr media
Crowded #7 kicks off the second arc as Charlie and Vita try to make their way to Las Vegas. Tons of humour, Charlie continues to be someone that you want to strangle, and Dog may just be the best part of the entire series. I love the art from Ro Stein, Ted Brandt, Tríona Farrell, Katie O’Meara, and Holly McKend.

Tumblr media
Deathstroke #45 begins “Deathstroke RIP” from Priest, Fernando Pasarin, Jason Paz, Wade von Grawbadger, Jeromy Cox, and Willie Schubert. This one deals with the legacy of Slade Wilson in a fascinating manner as Rose tries to fulfill her father’s last contract. There’s also a tie-in to the “Year of the Villain” event with someone here listening to Luthor’s offer. Should be an interesting road ahead.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds #1 is very much a continuation of the previous volume of Doom Patrol (with this first issue even including a “Thirteen” chapter heading), but it’s both inclusive and weird enough that it doesn’t overly matter if you’ve read the previous stuff. It helps, but this isn’t a bad place to jump in at the deep end. Gerard Way, Jeremy Lambert, James Harvey, Sajan Rai, and a seemingly uncredited letterer deliver an excellent story here, featuring a weird story on a fitness planet and Cliff dealing poorly with being flesh and blood again.
| Published by DC Comics / Young Animal
Tumblr media
Giant Days #52 seems to be setting up how the series may see its exit as Esther travels to London for a job interview. It’s going to be sad to see it end, but John Allison, Max Sarin, Whitney Cogar, and Jim Campbell are ensuring that these final stories contain all of the humour and rich character interaction that has been a hallmark for the book.
| Published by Boom Entertainment / BOOM! Box
Tumblr media
The Green Lantern #9 is another excellent issue with stunning artwork from Liam Sharp and Steve Oliff. This one sets up a new multiversal threat while also giving us a fun adventure on an otherwise forgotten corner of the DC Universe in Athmoora.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Harley Quinn #63 is another “Year of the Villain” tie-in, with the offer being heard on the last two pages of the book. That pretty much seems to be the theme of these tie-ins, so if you’re not normally reading the books, you might otherwise want to skip them if you’re only interested in Year of the Villain. Apart from that, this is an entertaining story of Harley dealing with her mother’s cancer diagnosis from Sam Humphries, Otto Schmidt, and Dave Sharpe.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Immortal Hulk #20 continues to build on the confrontation between Hulk, Betty, and the new Abomination adding General Fortean’s forces to the mix directly. It’s fairly explosive, while more horrible and horrifying things seem to be happening on the other side of the Green Door and elsewhere. Al Ewing, Joe Bennett, Ruy José, Belardino Brabo, Marc Deering, Paul Mounts, and Cory Petit continue to deliver Marvel’s best title. Also, there’s an Absolute Carnage teaser from Ewing, Brian Level, Mounts, and Clayton Cowles that gives us a missing body of General Ross and hints at possibly a more nightmarish Red Hulk.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Justice League #27 continues “Apex Predator” from James Tynion IV, Javier Fernandez, Bruno Redondo, Hi-Fi, and Tom Napolitano. It builds further on the new history of Luthor and Martian Manhunter, while the rest of the team continues to try to track down the Monitor and Anti-Monitor.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Lois Lane #1 is an excellent debut from Greg Rucka, Mike Perkins, Paul Mounts, and Simon Bowland. It focuses well on Lois’ day job, building up on what makes her a creditable threat to shady organizations and the US government alike as she pushes forward to find the truth. A very welcome reappearance of a Questionable character, some topical story threads of the camps at the southern US border, and gorgeous artwork from Perkins and Mounts.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Red Sonja #6 is the penultimate chapter of this arc with the finale spinning off in the Lord of Fools special. Some interesting developments here as the Zamoran Emperor tries to end the war by offering Sonja a marriage proposal.
| Published by Dynamite
Tumblr media
Savage Avengers #3 fully unites the team as Electra and Punisher join the others, complete with an interesting merging for the Venom symbiote. Gerry Duggan tosses out some really great funny lines for this one amidst all of the bloody action.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Sea of Stars #1 is a heartbreaking debut from Jason Aaron, Dennis Hallum, Stephen Green, Rico Renzi, and Jared K. Fletcher. Heartbreaking because it tells the story of a kid and his father, struggling to get by in cruel world through space shipping, and the attack of a weird space creature that tears them apart. Great set-up, beautiful art, and some bizarre events for what happens to the kid.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Space Bandits #1 is worth it just for the incredible artwork from Matteo Scalera and Marcelo Maiolo. Like Scalera’s work on Black Science, the inventiveness of his art knows no limits and he explores some rich and detailed alien landscapes and characters, with a neat pastel colour palette from Maiolo. This first issue sets up two criminals screwed over by their respective crews.

Tumblr media
Star Wars: Target Vader #1 is a compelling debut that sets up a plot to kill Darth Vader from Robbie Thompson, Marc Laming, Chris Bolson, Neeraj Menon, Jordan Boyd, Andres Mossa, Federico Blee, Erick Arciniega, and Clayton Cowles. This one’s largely a gathering of the team set-up as we follow Valance from Han Solo: Imperial Cadet and learn of an organization running guns against the Empire.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Superman: Up in the Sky #1 begins to collect the original Superman story that was published in those Walmart-exclusive 100-page anthologies from Tom King, Andy Kubert, Sandra Hope, Brad Anderson, and Clayton Cowles. It’s not a bad start, even if it seems a bit weird as to how obsessive Superman seems to be over a missing child stolen from the planet. Some of the best art from Andy Kubert I’ve seen in a while.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Test #1 is another highly unique and entertaining debut for Vault. Christopher Sebela, Jen Hickman, Harry Saxon, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou introduce us to Aleph, a test subject in some sort of corporate experiment that seems to have some sort of unique powers. Or maybe not. That’s the interesting thing, there are hints that it could all be in Aleph’s mind. Wonderful art from Hickman and Saxon.

Thumbs #2 continues this excellent series from Sean Lewis and Hayden Sherman. The world-building in this series is incredible, especially considering how immensely personal it happens to be in regards to being seen through Thumbs’ eyes. The colour scheme in this series of blue-grey washes and hot pink just makes this look and feel wonderfully unique. Also, how the back-up story is presented with spot illustrations and dialogue is a neat use of format.

Full Circle
**
Author Notes - this can be read as a conclusion to Infundo Chronicles but I’ll probably still write more in this universe from time to time. When I set out to write this particular story I didn’t expect it to be the last, but it seemed fitting. Stories and universes can sometimes close on their own and as a writer I can respect that, but I do love this version of Bruce, Tony, and Steve together. So it’s a peaceful place to stop.
I’ll still answer questions about them (and maybe do a little RPing if people want) but for now, I wish them well.

Full Circle, an Infundo Fic (Stark Spangled Chubby!Banner)
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 2480
Warnings: None

Non, rien de rien
Non, je ne regrette rien
C'est payé, balayé, oublié
Je me fous du passé !
--Michel Vaucaire (sung by Edith Piaf)
They respected his right to keep his past tightly-guarded. They also knew he never discussed his adolescence, apart from what they’d already read in public files. And yes, to be fair all three of them had “issues,” but their conversations would end in a Fort Knox lockdown if they nagged him for answers about his past. And somewhere dark in him, Bruce figured Hulk’s creation could’ve stemmed from crushing daddy issues (Brian Banner’s uxoricide and atrocities guaranteed a life of depression and suicidal ideation, too).
The public treated him like a circus sideshow before the Hulk emerged, even since he was a little kid, so yeah Tony and Steve guessed he still had a few unvoiced problems. Yet they never pressed him to talk unless his depression took a sudden dive.
He loved them for that.
“Did you know?” Bruce whispered softly. His low voice trembled in Tony’s ear, causing Tony to grunt and tighten a grip on “his” portion of Bruce’s prodigious paunch. Trailers from the last movie streamed mutely to the sleepy thirds, recommending movies Bruce put on his “to view later” list.
On his left Steve’s snores teased a giggle from Bruce’s throat. He’d gotten much too fat to comfortably view Steve from his side unless he moved his entire body (which he wouldn’t, for fear of waking him), but Bruce could feel the ebb and flow of Steve’s chest with each breath. The noises calmed Bruce and kept him comfortably grounded.
But apart from the grunt, Tony had barely moved. Bruce’s excess body heat had turned their ridiculously wide couch into pockets of therapeutic warmth, perfect for the chilly morn, and Tony refused to shift off of Bruce’s lap. The sectional was nearly as comfortable as their bed but on nights when they ate junk and stayed up late watching quadruple features, everyone elected to sleep on the couch.
“Shh, Brucie,” Tony slurred. He sighed as Bruce finger combed his hair. “Sleep now, dear. Muse later.”
“Mhm.” Bruce chuckled when Tony snuggled deeper into his stomach, squeezing and fluffing the fat like his own personal pillow. In response Bruce swirled his sausage-thick fingers through Tony’s hair, lulling the engineer back to sleep.
“I saw that very movie in college,” Bruce mumbled once Tony snuffled in his sleep. “Back when I finally won enough scholarship money for my books,  tuition, housing, and a seven-day meal plan.” His fingers methodically and unconsciously tapped Tony’s scalp. “Betty and I argued a lot back then but our arguments waned after we saw that movie. ‘Of course I still love you,’ she’d said, ‘but you’ve got to do something. You look way too much like him.’“
Bruce frowned and gentled his hands in Tony’s hair. If he got too rough Tony’d wake and he didn’t want that. “That’s when I made some tough decisions,” he murmured. “Looking back, I honestly don’t think I wanted to. But I changed anyway. For her.”
Confessing--well half-confessing, since he hoped his words were vague enough so no one would understand him--helped loosen the gut-knot he’d ignored for years.
Go figure.
Bruce ran a hand beneath his glasses, sighing. He really should turn in. The clock on the TV read four-something-am and yeah, it was technically Saturday, but still--
“Wait, what?”
Nuts. Bruce swallowed. “Um...you’re dreaming. Go back to sleep, Tony.”
“Nuh, uh, no. We’re not playing that card.” Tony yawned and rolled up like a cat, propping his elbow behind the couch so he could stare Bruce eye to bloodshot eye. Bruce smiled a little and pulled back one of Tony’s stray hairs to de-emphasize his lover’s bedhead.
“There’s no card. We need get some decent sleep because we stay up too late on weekends as it is. So next time, I say we stick to double features when teaching Steve twentieth century culture. And we start earlier in the day.”
“The eighties rule, and those movies’re Lays potato chips - try to watch just one, I dare you.” Bruce smirked, conceding Tony’s point. “But that’s neither here nor there, big guy. And you’re forgetting that One, I’m a light sleeper. And Two, a genius.”
“A genius at staying up way too late.”
“And a genius at peering through other geniuses smokescreens.”
“Touche.”
“Hey, hey,” Steve grumbled. Bruce shut his eyes, internally groaning. He could verbally spar with Tony to get him off the scent, but not him and Steve.
Steve sniffed and hid a yawn in a curved fist. “What time is it?”
“Between astronomical and civil dawn.”
Steve blinked. “What--?”
“4:30 a.m-ish,” Tony translated. He gave Bruce a hard stare. “And our boy Brucie is playing dumb while attempting to evade my questions.”
Steve looked adorably rumpled and rather childlike the seconds before fully wakening, but his clueless innocence didn’t last long. Bruce sank lower into the couch as concern and anger clouded Steve’s expression.
“Why?”
“I’m thinkin’ it had something to do with the last movie, but he’s not budging.”
“The movie with that really cute guy, with the cute name?”
Tony grinned. “Yeah.”
“C’mon, that had to be a stage name.”
“What, John Candy? Nope. Real name.”
“Son of a gun.”
Bruce hoped they’d continue, or at least leave him alone enough so they’d ignore him. “I’m just tired,” he deflected, yawning for emphasis. “We should table this for another time - really, it’s nothing.”
“No we’re gonna have it out now, because you’re too good at diverting us from the truth.” Bruce rolled his eyes. “Stop it. I know your game, Banner. You might as well ‘fess up.”
Worse, Steve kneaded Bruce’s side like a giant soothing cat, breaking concentration and resolve. “C’mon, muffin,” Steve sang, softly kissing Bruce’s jawline. “No judgments here.”
Bruce exchanged gazes with both of the men. “All right, all right. Fine...but don’t make a giant deal out of this, okay?”
“Promise,” Tony said, and Bruce glared daggers. “I said I wouldn’t! Sheesh.”
Bruce ignored his retort. “Steve...?”
“I’ll try,” Steve mumbled.
Bruce thinned his lips and ran his hands through his hair, hardening his expression. “This is tough for me, okay? So don’t...blow this out of proportion.”
“We won’t, we won’t,” Tony growled. He made the universal, “hurry up” gesture with his hand. “Just spit it out.”
Bruce glowered at his partners once before staring at his hands. “O...kay. Okay. For a year or two in college,” he breathed, mentally preparing himself, “I was...pretty tubby.” His gaze shot up as Steve squeaked, but when he saw delight marching across his lover’s faces he held up a hand. “Ah, no! I told you, don’t make a big deal out of this!”
“Like...how tubby?” Tony asked, and his nefarious grin nearly split his skull. Steve nervously chewed his lips, not daring to make another sound. “Big as you are now? Or--”
Bruce shut his eyes. “I don’t even know why I bother,” he mumbled. Then, “Almost, maybe. Since one of my scholarships provided unlimited cafeteria meals as long as I maintained my honors GPA, I made up for my strict childhood by gobbling up every fried, sugary, and fatty treat I could get my hands on. I took full advantage of the all-you-can-eat buffets on campus including the ones open after midnight, and I was determined to get my money’s worth.”
He quietly fiddled with the hem on his shirt cuff, thankful that his partners kept quiet after his rebuff. “Maybe in one sense I was afraid. Afraid that someone had made a clerical error, and I’d lose my literal meal ticket. I justified the gorging, telling myself the free food was temporary. When you’re poor,” he said, suddenly solemn, “you don’t question ‘free’ or ‘extra.’ You take what you can, when you can.”
The room stilled, and Bruce suddenly heard the quiet background noises of their home; Lily lapping from her water dish, Jarvis’ temperature modulations, the exhales of surprise from his companions.
Time to change the atmosphere.
“In short,” Bruce said lightly, attempting to brighten the mood, “I gained the freshman two fifteen instead of the freshman fifteen.”
“And Betty wasn’t happy about it.”
Bruce shook his head. “I didn’t want to lose her, so I slimmed down until she was happy with me again. And anyway,” he muttered, shifting awkwardly on the couch, “thrift stores didn’t really carry my size and I couldn’t afford anything new. So that ended that.”
“But you liked it,” Steve murmured, his voice caught somewhere between awe and reverence. Bruce wasn’t sure if the awe came from him being 215+ pounds overweight in college or something else. “That’s what it was, wasn’t it? You liked being fat.”
Bruce shifted again. “I...um. Well, honestly? ‘Like’ isn’t a strong enough word. I...ah. I loved it.” He stared at his thick hands, feeling the embarrassment flood him, even now. “It felt great to be that chubby. I felt powerful. I felt in charge of my destiny and in control of my life. I...enjoyed how my mass shifted and jiggled with each footfall. How my steps caused furniture to quake and rattle. How people couldn’t ignore me.” He heard a small squeak, and immediately narrowed his eyes. “Steve. Don’t turn this into something weird.”
“I’m not, I--It’s just, it’s--um...it’s--”
“Nah, you broke him, Pooh Bear.” Tony grinned like a shark and tweaked Bruce’s double chin before sobering. “I could make some quip about the Hulk, but I won’t. And while I’m sorry Betty made you lose your weight class and you went back to fighting featherweight--”
“Lightweight.”
“--whatever weight, it was still wrong of her to force it on you. I like that you liked bein’ a hunky chunky and that you’re finally getting to enjoy it, twenty-plus years later.” He rubbed the back of his neck and got quiet. “Makes me feel less like a creeper, anyway.”
Both Steve and Bruce frowned but only Bruce responded. “A...what? Why?”
Tony paused as an uncharacteristic blush tinted his cheeks. “Hm. Well...I ran my own little tests on you, Banner. My mind loved watching your weight shoot up so I casually recommended some meal ideas to our cooks. I told them to tweak the recipes to keep you large, and in charge.”
Bruce gently reached for Tony’s hand and gave him a gentle peck on the lips. “Thanks for telling me but if I’d minded I would’ve said something.” Tony snorted, looking bashfully at a corner of the room. “Trust me, my taste buds are so heightened that I can tell if there’s extra cream or another additive. It makes my meals extra delicious so I enjoy overeating to savor every bite.”
“Ohhh...” An unconscious moan dropped from Steve’s lips. Tony rolled his eyes even as Bruce grabbed Steve’s hand.
“You’re both ridiculous,” Bruce huffed. “But I love you anyway.” Bruce brought both their hands to his lips, kissing them. “I was destined to blow up. I just had to have the right company and the right motivation.”
“So...you’re not mad?”
Bruce looked pensive. “No, not really. Maybe disappointed you weren’t initially up front with me, but it’s okay. But let me know from here on out.
“In fact,” he sighed again, shifting his belly. He briefly pawed it, smirking at the bounce in his lap. “I think I’m nearing the point where I want to level out.”
“Aw, honest?”
“Steve, don’t be too upset.” A small smile pinked Bruce’s lips. “It was inevitable; you know I can’t keep gaining forever.” He gently rubbed Steve’s hand. “My human body is hitting some hard limits and it’s becoming difficult to move comfortably. I can’t walk too far - and running’s definitely out - but I’d like to be able to at walk around the house without a variety of ambulatory aids, y’know?”
“Yeah, I get it.” Steve pouted, causing Bruce to laugh. “I’ll miss measurement nights, though.”
Bruce winked at him. “I might not want to actively gain but I’m not planning on losing anything. So feel free to keep me in this range, plus or minus ten pounds.”
Steve’s expression brightened. “That I could do.”
“It’s a compromise, I’m sure. But I consider myself fluffy enough for your whims.”
“Stop,” Tony interrupted, laughing at their schmaltz. “No more, I’m done. I’m going to bed.”
“I think we should all turn in. It’s pretty late.”
“Early, you mean.” Steve offered his hand. Bruce took the help, rocking back and forth so the momentum could launch him from the couch’s deep divots. Steve smiled softly. His expression lingered on Bruce’s massive torso and on the button-down shirt with strained seams. “You need some new work shirts, Muffin.”
“Yeah. Maybe later today or tomorrow.”
“Shopping?” Tony yawned grandly and wrapped his arms around Bruce’s sides, though his fingers were more than a foot from connecting. Bruce chuckled as Tony slammed his head into his back, snuggling close. “Shopping’s my second favorite hobby.”
“And your first?”
“You blind, Banner? It’s you. And Steve, in a pinch.”
“In a pinch, huh? Thanks.”
“You two,” Bruce murmured. He motioned Steve over and stilled as both men wrapped around him in a cocoon of arm warmth. “My guys.”
“Always and forever,” Steve mumbled, and Bruce felt Tony nod against his back.
“Sleep now,” Tony said. “It’s chilly, and I need my Bruce-powered bed warmer.”
“You got it.”
They changed into comfortable clothes and tumbled into bed with Bruce between them. Bruce exhaled a loud, contented sigh as both Tony and Steve scooted into his body, cuddling snugly into his fat. He briefly reminiscent about his life, about the beginning of their time as a trio until now, and realized he was happier than he had any right to be. “Love you,” he whispered to them. He smiled after feeling a gentle whump while Lily found her sleep spot, completing their family.
Bruce mouthed you too to their pup, then settled into his own peaceful slumber.

“Oh the weather outside is frightful
But inside it’s so...”
Who am I kidding? Inside was pretty frightful as well.
While outside was bitter, wet, and cold, the Avenger’s compound was toasty warm. However, the warm air did not translate into a warm feelings amongst the beings inside.
Rocket was arguing with Rhodey and Gamora, insisting that gravity mines would make great ornaments on the tree, and very practical in case of a surprise attack. He also was eyeing up Rhodey’s leg braces, but that was a plan for later.
Meanwhile, Drax was watching “Grandma Got Run-over by a Reindeer” with Mantis, and was trying to understand how Santa was the one in trouble, and why they did not just kill the reindeer for getting out of control. Not that Mantis fully understood either; however, she was preventing Drax from becoming frustrated and attempting to find and slaughter a reindeer.
Our lovely treenager Groot was sulking in the corner because seeing so many fellow trees cut down before they could even reach maturity hurt him. (Tony’s tree was a high quality artificial; however, they had driven by a man selling trees by the side of the road and were forced to explain it to him.)
Pepper was frantically trying to finish the decorating around the rest of the compound with Peter Parker’s help, as the decorating company had been scared off by the Guardians, and Peter could reach the higher areas.
Harley was in the kitchen, quietly eating the cookies that were meant for the following day, hoping no one saw him do it and he could blame it on Rocket. He’d already gotten FRIDAY on his side.
Of course, though the old avengers were in the compound, none of them would lift a finger to help with the Guardians there.
Peter Quill was out actually, and no one knew where. He didn’t say, just borrowed a car and left.
And Tony?
Tony was in his workshop, where he’d been for the last couple days for most of the day. Doing what? No one but JARVIS knew.
What everyone knew, but no one except Pepper cared to admit was that tomorrow was Christmas. The Guardian’s first Christmas on Earth, and the Avenger’s first Christmas back. How they acted would influence the public’s opinion of them for the next year.
Pepper already announced they would be releasing a “Happy Holidays” video (the plan was to release it at the beginning of December; however, Thanos kinda set that timeframe back), and they had to play nice.
Right now, that didn’t look possible.
And JARVIS, who Tony had managed to salvage slowly (though he was far from fully operational, as Tony hadn’t backed him up in a while, and the last backup was damaged from the Mandarin attack, thus he was running in the background as someone for Friday to consult and work with than a managerial AI), was horrified by the current state of affairs. He couldn’t quietly sit in the background and do nothing. He took to the compound speakers(with the exception of the workshop)and said in an firm tone, “I’m sorry, the current state of affairs cannot continue. With the exception of Miss. Potts and Mr. Parker, you will all return to your apartments, and will not be allowed out until tomorrow, when hopefully you will have considered your actions, and thus have the capability to behave appropriately. You are all fully mature beings, with the exception of Groot. You need to act in accordance with this.” And before anyone could protest, the entire compound went dark except for small navigational lights. There were still several protests, however FRIDAY said she couldn’t turn anything back on. Thus, most everyone slowly made their way to their apartments(though some had more trouble than others).
Star Lord returned home an hour later to Pepper and Peter still decorating, and was confused as to where everyone else had went, however he figured they had just decided to go work on the Milano or something. He helped Pepper decorate for a bit since they still had so much left, before heading to bed himself.
The next morning, the Avengers and the Guardians came into the communal living room to see...
How do I put this?
Beautiful chaos is the only way to describe it.
It was far from Pepper’s dream of a pristine, elaborate set up. However, what could be clearly seen was that everyone had contributed, and that made it feel more at home than anything else could.
Bucky had made paper garlands for the tree, Clint had shot festive pine garland up into the ceiling, Natasha had made some kind of fancy Russian cookie, Steve had made elaborate paper snowflakes which hung everywhere, and Sam had made some of those fruit ornaments that you put a million cloves into.
Harley had clearly gotten some help from the bots, and decorated the walls, doorways, and mantles with lights, and Rhodey had called his momma up for her cinnamon roll recipe.
With Drax and Mantis’s help, Rocket got the tree decorated and looking somewhat less violent. Gamora and Groot made a few decorative...Reindeer...out of sticks they found outside(well, Groot had found them, Gamora refused to go outside in that weather).
And there seemed to have been a silent agreement that no one touched the angel tree topper that Peter had come home with and placed on the tree the night before.
“It’s So...” Rhodey started.
“Fitting.” Steve finished, looking around at the chaos of half professional, half homemade decoration. The homemade decorations brought back memories of first Christmas out of the ice, in the tower...Steve shook his head. Those days may be gone; however, maybe they can start to move on now.
All of a sudden, everyone’s attention was drawn to the muffled yelling outside, and they all gathered at the windows, looking out to see Tony in the wet, cold grass, next to a medium sized machine. Once he saw he had the group’s attention, he pressed a button, and a beam shot into the air, and slowly, clouds started coming together, and snow started falling.
While most of Guardians didn’t understand the whole idea behind Christmas, they could still appreciate the unity of the celebration.
The Avengers decided to put aside their differences for the holiday.
The scene was very peaceful and unifying, until there was an abnormally loud clap of thunder, and a flash, and Thor and Loki were suddenly on the lawn. No longer traveling by Rainbow bridge, they seemed to have found their way around that challenge. Thor seemed to be carrying...Some sort of large, pig like creature, meanwhile Loki appeared to be empty handed, however that may not be the case considering his magic. They came inside to join the others, and Thor set the big on the counter.
“MY BRETHREN! I have brought
Sæhrímnir for us to enjoy this fine Christmas!” Thor bellowed with a wide grin. He may have mellowed out after the destruction of Asgard, but he was still a generally cheerful fellow.
“And I brought mead, because no one can sit through hours of war stories without it.” Loki deadpanned.
Drax looked at Mantis to see if it was sarcasm, before saying “I could! I love stories of great battles and wars!”
Rocket rolled his eyes, before looking at the pig thing, “Can I get it’s tusks?”
“But of course, my fearsome, furry friend!” Thor said with a smile.
Steve and Clint began to help Thor prepare the hog, meanwhile Loki conjured up glasses and barrels of mead, and took one for himself, before letting the others take what they wanted as they wished.
Pepper nearly had an aneurism when she saw the state of the living room; however, when she saw how well everyone was getting along, she realized that was better than anything she could set up. JARVIS also compiled clips of everyone decorating the living room, and of them enjoying the holiday season.
By the way, if you’re wondering where Bruce has been this whole time, Tony had flown him and Betty to a private island. They both needed a relaxing break from everyone, and Bruce needed some time to be Bruce with no chance of Hulk making a visit. They were on good terms, but after two years, you kinda need a break from the guy.
Quill sat on the couch in a stupid Christmas sweater beside Tony, who was wrapped in a fuzzy blanket. The couple had come out a while ago, but they didn’t always act like it around the others. However, right now, Tony just curled up against his boyfriend, not caring what anyone thought. Star Lord smiled and held him close, kissed the top of his head. He watched as as Peter Parker attempts to sneak a glass of the mead from the table, but it moves just out of his reach every time, meanwhile Harley does the smart thing, and steals Clint’s when he turns away.
Everyone was happy and peaceful, and despite the earlier chaos, this turned out to be a rather delightful Christmas.

So, Cap. Marvel had this One Deleted Scene...
It sort of expands more on her stealing that motorcycle. Here.
https://twitter.com/usatodaylife/status/1131620934077571072
I’d say “You should have included this, it adds more personality to her when she kind of needed it in the film” but...then I thought about it. It’s just more FLIPPANCY. Y’know, the only other switch she has other than stoic calmness. Those are the two buttons she predominately has throughout the film. She’s calm and collected and all stone-cold “Don’t got nothing to prove to you” and flippantly snarky when she’s not. That’s it.
I know what you’re thinking. “Well a lot of the Marvel heroes are snarky and quippy and flippant, why’s it okay when they do it”?
One, it gets annoying seeing it done twenty times.
Two, the guy who does it the most and started the whole snarky dry wit humor thing? Iron Man.
And I HAAAAAAATE Iron Man. I have never, EVER forgiven him for the stuff in Marvel’s Civil War comic. Not ever. He got off fuckin’ scott free and he can fuck a garbage disposal. I’m Captain America all the way. Even though they fucked HIM over with the Hydra crap in the comics.
Three, we actually get to know the characters in the other films who do similar behavior. We know their likes, dislikes, their fears, hopes and dreams. We see their family. We get a buildup. What do we really know about Carol?
Well, we THOUGHT we knew her when the film starts off, then about twenty minutes or so in...evidently not, something’s off about her past. So everything we THOUGHT had been established about her past was a big fuckin’ lie. She’s not that person at all. So who is she then? Do we see her past? Not really. The most we ever see of her actual past doesn’t add up to ten minutes of screentime and it’s FLASHBACK stuff that first appears with quick, almost seizure-inducing editing when her brain is being scanned. Then there’s the one full scene when Mar-vell is shot and Carol gets her powers. That’s it.
Let’s compare her to Captain America. We see his normal life. We see him with his friend Bucky, and him wanting to join the army out of a sense of Patriotic duty and because he doesn’t like bullies, and the Nazis are the biggest ones of all. He’s too weak though. But then he gets a chance to be a candidate for a super soldier serum and proves his mettle by trying to fall on a grenade to save his fellow men. We also see he’s smart, and not a brainless brick. He gets a flag down that nobody else did not by climbing up the pole...but by just knocking down the pole itself, then leisurely plucking the flag up. Nobody else thought of that. But he did.
So we see him quite a lot and get to know who he is BEFORE he gets his powers and even then, it didn’t really change who he was inside. It just brought out the potential that was always there.
But Carol? What do we know about her? We don’t really see her with her friends and family. We get TOLD what she is, but we’re not SHOWN. And on top of that, she doesn’t really suffer any consequences or trials. She gets it easy.
Let’s compare.
Thor actually gets kicked out of his home. He disobeys his dad’s orders and because he’s such an arrogant toe-rag, he is stripped of his godhood, and he can’t even use his big, fancy hammer because he’s not worthy of it anymore. He’s easily captured by SHIELD. He’s a fish out of water who has no idea how the Earth works and he has nothing but the clothes on his back, and he has to learn humility, and to respect other people. He begins to fall in love with a human woman, and at the end he even offers himself up to save others. So he fell to his lowest point and then got to rise back up by proving himself humble and noble and worthy again through self-sacrifice for other’s sake.
Guardians of the Galaxy. It opens with a KID LOSING HIS MOM TO CANCER. He’s so hurt he can’t bring himself to take her hand on her deathbed, he runs out of the building to cry and he’s abducted by aliens whom, we get told, joke about doing things like EATING HIM. Which he doesn’t find funny AT ALL.  That kid grows up into a rather selfish jerk who’s an arrogant thief, and he gets into a big fight with bounty hunters AND they all get tossed into jail. Peter, the kid, has to work with others to break out and sell the fruits of his labor, which turns out to be an infinity stone. We learn more about the others, we learn of their pain, and we see them at low points too. Rocket drunk and feeling like a worthless, stupid animal. Drax tries to avenge his murdered family and fails miserably. Groot’s self-sacrifice. And they’re all...well...losers! All of them have indeed lost people and Gamora’s implied to have been heavily mistreated by Thanos, but they’re also all sort of pathetic. Just about everything they try to do blows up in their face in some way. So because they keep getting screwed over and screwing up and then at the END succeed by working together, we can identify with them. They don’t really have these huge, amazing powers either, so you can further identify with them because for the most part, they’re just normal people with guns and knives except for Groot.
Capt America, as I’ve shown, has a ton of his life shown before he even becomes Captain America. But he loses his best friend. He can’t even get drunk to numb the pain.  And then at the end of the film he has to sacrifice himself to keep WMDs from being launched on America. He crashes into the arctic, and he doesn’t die, but he’s frozen for 70 years. He’s lost the love of his life. He’s lost his whole world, his time. All of his friends and family are dead now. He’s got nothing. He saved America...but he has nothing left. THAT...is tragedy. THAT...is drama. THAT...is good writing and it gets us to identify and relate to him.
Heck, take ANT-MAN. He’s a pathetic thief. He can’t even see his own daughter. He can’t even pay child support. He can’t hold a job because he’s a thief. So from the beginning, this guy is a loser. His only special thing is the suit he manages to steal, and he even at first doesn’t WANT it, he tries to return it. Throughout the film that sense of “this guy’s pretty pathetic” lingers on. His big thing is being able to shrink and to summon ants. Not that impressive. But we can relate to somebody who’s so pathetic, we can see ourselves in him, especially since he sincerely keeps trying to help his daughter. You know, the clear, obvious family that’s very firmly established and we get to know more than Marvel’s family who isn’t even her actual family and most of what we know about them  is from an info-dump scene and very brief flashing images of her singing in a bar with Monica?
Even TONY has a better origin. At first he’s a smug weapons manufacturer. Then he gets kidnapped. He’s gonna get killed. He gets to know a man named Yinsen, a doctor, who helps save his life. They form a bond and Tony builds a suit made of scraps in a CAVE! But tragically Yinsen dies to save Tony. Tony barely makes it out of their alive, and decides...no more weapons. His company is done selling them. Period. But he does build a new suit, the Iron Man suit, and decides to use it to start helping people and fighting terrorism. He wants to clean up the mess he’s unknowingly made. He was at a low point. Knocked down. Nobody takes his company seriously anymore and they think he’s cuckoo for getting out of the weapons business AND if that electromagnet in his chest is removed, he’ll die. There’s a real threat to his life. So at least he started out at a low point and had to rebuild himself and build his way back up. And even then I still don’t really like him much at all.
There’s only ONE origin that I think is truly weak and could be called worse than Capt. Marvel’s. Hulk. Bruce Banner HAS to control his temper, sure, because when he tried to perform an experiment to make humans immune to gamma radiation...it failed, he went all Hulk and destroyed the lab he was in and killed several people AND he hurt the guy who helped start the project, Gen. Ross AND his beloved Betty Ross, whom Bruce cares for deeply. He’s a fugitive from the law from the very beginning of the film and desperately looking for a cure. And yes, the entire film he’s on the run and there’s never a moment’s peace for him until the very end. But then again, Captain Marvel is also on the road and the run a lot of her movie, and we see more bonding with the people who used to be her friends than Hulk bonding with Betty. And she and Nick Fury get plenty of great friendship too. Not much friendship and bonding in Hulk.
But I think you get the point. Compared to almost all the other superhero origin films in Marvel, Carol Danvers got jack. Even BLACK PANTHER in HIS debut in Civil War got more because we see him lose his dad and he doesn’t even get vengeance and he has to accept that revenge isn’t the answer. There’s an arc. And he’s also more fleshed out as a character. Plus his own actual movie gives him even more of an arc and having to accept responsibility for his country while realizing they’ve really dropped the ball on how to handle power. And the villains aren’t boring either.
So Captain Marvel’s film is just...ehhhhhh. Meh. Blah. Whatever. That’s it.
I know what you’re gonna say. “But it got so much money!” Yeah. And one of the big reasons was the same reason Black Panther did. Superhero marvel film featuring a type not seen before. For Black Panther, it’s a mainstream black superhero. For Capt. Marvel, mainstream superHEROINE. We only really had one other, Wonder Woman. People were hungry for more, even if the end result is just OKAY or AVERAGE at best. People will accept poor representation or just average if the alternate is none at all. You’d rather have crumbs than nothing. Even the critics said Captain Marvel was about a 78%, even Ant-Man and the Wasp, one of the weaker Marvel films, got a higher rating. It got ONE point higher than Thor, one of the weaker Marvel origin films. But to be fair it dead beat The incredible Hulk! And again, that’s from the Critics. AKA people who get paid to like this stuff. Sometimes outright directly in Sony’s case since we found out they were paying off critics. XD
Just saying. Capt. Marvel wasn’t that good. But if I had to say one thing about this deleted scene that didn’t make it into the film, it’s this.
SUUUUUUUUUUUBTLE. XD

For the week of 1 April 2019
Quick Bits:
Amazing Spider-Man #18.HU is Gibbon’s tale from Nick Spencer, Ken Lashley, Erick Arciniega, and Joe Caramagna. It’s a gut punch, a kick in the teeth, a few tosses against a tree, and then an attempt to turn you into a porcupine via arrows. While it does do a good job of telling Gibbon’s tale and attempting to make you care about him, it’s not a pleasant comic. It’s kicking the crap out of a z-list character to make you feel “the stakes” and this is really starting to feel cheap. Maiming and killing characters to up the gravity of a story, especially ones we’ve not see for some time, it’s not fun. It’s not shocking. And I’m tired of it. Which is somewhat sad, because this is some of the best art I’ve seen from Ken Lashley for a while. He seems to be channelling bits of Jack Kirby and Keith Giffen into his normal style and it looks really damn good.

Amber Blake #1 is another partnership with Glénat in France, this one a fairly moody crime story from Jade Lagardère, Butch Guice, Christa Miesner, and Robbie Robbins. It’s a fairly dark beginning, delving into sexual assault and human trafficking, but interesting. The art from Guice is incredible.

Avengers: No Road Home #8 breaks out some art from Carlo Barberi as we head towards the home stretch of this series. Very nice character moments for Hawkeye, Hercules, and Conan this issue, though the build up of seemingly insurmountable odds from Nyx is adding some incredible tension.

Bronze Age Boogie #1 launches Ahoy’s second wave of series and it’s awesome. The lead story is a bizarre mix of Doom Patrol-esque superheroes, Planet of the Apes alternate realities, and a teenager from nearly 4000 years ago fighting in a world of wizards and zombies. It’s glorious madness from Stuart Moore, Alberto Ponticelli, Giulia Brusco, and Rob Steen with so many ideas you can barely keep up. Rounding out this issue is the usual prose pieces and a wonderful back-up comic of Major Ursa, an astronaut bear, from Tyrone Finch, Mauricet, Lee Loughridge, and Steen that elevates the entire package even further.

Champions #4 unleashes Kaldera on the team looking to get revenge on Sam, while Miles and Kamala have a confrontation about what happened in Dubai. Lots of wonderful emotion in this one, beautifully depicted by Steven Cummings and Marcio Menyz. Also, Kaldera wanting to eat everyone is just weird.

Conan the Barbarian #5 is another great issue from Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, Matthew Wilson, and Travis Lanham. This one taps into Conan’s life as a thief and a pirate while unleashing eldritch horrors from stealing the wrong idol. Great tentacle beasts and a wonderful feeling of dread throughout the story as Conan fights to survive adrift at sea.

Dead Kings #4 gives us some more dark humour as Maria and Sasha get closer to launching the rescue attempt on the prison, while Gena plans a little revolt of his own. Great artwork from Matthew Dow Smith and Lauren Affe.

Deathstroke #42 continues the “Terminus Agenda” crossover with Teen Titans as Slade looses the bonds of his prison in Robin’s underground supervillain jail, then hangs about and seemingly attempts to needle Damian as their attempt to take down another villain goes awry. This story is odd, but entertaining. Christopher Priest, Carlo Pagulayan, Jason Paz, Norm Rapmund, Jeromy Cox, and Willie Schubert are doing something interesting here.

Die #5 gives us the conclusion to the first arc and it’s pretty dark. Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans, and Clayton Cowles make us question here whether or not our heroes actually are “good” as they systematically start to take apart some of Sol’s toys in order to try to get home. Also, there are some horrifying hints at worse things waiting.

The Girl in the Bay #3 chronicles a bit of Hugh’s side of the story to his monstrous clay-like hallucination buddy, as Kathy continues to try to make sense of her double existence and the older version of her’s death. There’s definitely something else at play here as JM DeMatteis, Corin Howell, James Devlin, and Clem Robins keep building this mystery.

The Green Lantern #6 is relatively muted compared to previous issues, but still has an incredible impact as Hal goes through seemingly the last of the Blackstars’ tests and is granted an audience with Mu, from Grant Morrison, Liam Sharp, Steve Oliff, and Steve Wands. Mu here definitely seems to be insane, which is chilling for someone trying to control everything. There are some very interesting twists throughout, including another form of sacrifice from Hal, leading him to a strange place and a very old character who should give a hint as to where they are now.

Immortal Hulk #16 is another incredible issue from Al Ewing, Joe Bennett, Ruy José, Paul Mounts, and Cory Petit. This team really seems to be able to do no wrong and each subsequent issue is another masterpiece in horror, weaving together an impressive amount of Hulk history in a compelling and enticing way. Along with a very interesting development for Betty.

Impossible Incorporated #5 concludes what has been an excellent all-ages series from JM DeMatteis, Max Cavallaro, and Gabrielle Gomez. This final issue leans heavy into quantum reality and divinity experiencing itself through permutation and self-reflection.

Lodger #4 gets a little messy as the Laphams deliver the penultimate chapter of this series, inching closer to Ricky’s final confrontation with Dante. The disparate threads of the past, present, and Dante’s travelogues converge to a very strange perfect storm.

Marvel Team-Up #1 is an entertaining debut from Eve L. Ewing, Joey Vasquez, Felipe Sobreiro, and Clayton Cowles. This first issue teams up Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel presenting both sides to their day as they attend a speech from a noted ESU alumnus who has created a mind transfer device. Those things always go well. There’s some interesting contrast between wanting to be young again and wanting to be older faster.

Oberon #3 continues to twist the tale as Oberon is confounded a bit by what Bonnie isn’t, from Ryan Parrott, Miloš Slavković, and Charles Pritchett. It seems as though nothing is as it seems in this story which leads to some intriguing surprises.

Red Sonja #3 is another excellent part of the story from Mark Russell, Mirko Colak, Bob Q, Dearbhla Kelly, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. This one hits hard on the value of mercenaries and what actually breeds loyalty.

Self/Made #5 takes off in yet another direction as Amala tracks down a scientist who has been searching for proof that ours is not the top level reality and is actually another simulation. It’s truly amazing as to how Mathew Groom, Eduardo Ferigato, Marcelo Costa, Mariana Calil, and Troy Peteri keep turning this story on a dime, with new revelations and new changes each issue without any of it feeling like a trick and delivering an engrossing narrative each time.

Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #7 focuses on some of the odd jobs that Gwen is getting through her website, pushes forward the problems she’s having with her headaches, and complicates her personal life a bit more. Seanan McGuire is very nicely developing Gwen’s character and relationships, all with some beautiful artwork from Takeshi Miyazawa and Ian Herring.

Summit #14 concludes this arc with Val and co. attempting to rescue Fiona and JB from Agent Wald’s clutches. The team-up with Noble and further development of Jamila helps re-emphasize the broader shared universe of Catalyst Prime. Also, how far all of the astronauts involved in the Event have come. Gorgeous artwork from Marika Cresta and Bryan Valenza.
