Get Back Rewatch 55 Years On: Day Four

"Lennon's late again" says Paul, as he walks in late. And sweet Ringo just gently, "between ten and eleven is the time" Which means: "Chill babe. He'll be here."

One thing that always gob smacks me is how bored George and Ringo are watching Paul pull Get Back out of the ether. They literally see him do this shit all the time which is insane to me.

His voice is so so so pretty!!! And he's just so completely in his own world. The hunched shoulders. The twitching. The gibberish. The tapping. The twisting.

Obviously this is a song with the original central feeling being let's go back to before everything went wrong but he wants to make it into a meaningless song with both story bits and almost walrus-esque bits. But why is the first lyric he comes up with about gender? Thinking of @scurators posts on Paul and gender.

Ringo's customary quiet really does add significance to his voice, so him singing along with this so quickly says something I think about his support for the song and for Paul in general.

When John walks in he's greeted with a little cocky nod and smile like "look what I've just done while you were late." And then Paul sings "get back to where you once belonged" directly at him before breaking the eye contact. It's one of those heartbreaking Lennon/McCartney miscommunications because Paul is doing this to get John back, but actually it's scaring him away, you know? Paul thinks he has to prove to John how good he is, but John's exhausted with how good Paul is.

Paul really does love the idea of being forced out of parliament by cops and honestly so do I. Would've been iconic and might've kept them together.

John's so quiet today and also Yoko is not here. Correlation or causation I wonder.

"They say don't they say charity begins at home?" I love you forever, George. His humor is always so well-placed and so dry (even though he's clearly cracking himself up here). And it steers the conversation away from a direction he was not happy with without poking any bears. In fact, everyone's laughing. Clever boy.

"I've decided that the whole point of it is communication. And to be on TV is communication and we've got a chance to smile at people like all you need is love or something so that's me incentive for doing it." Wise, egalitarian John making a lovely appearance.

And then there's Paul. "I'm here cause I wanna do a show." Lol I love them.

Why do they say "Mr Epstein?" Is it because they're on camera and they want people to know who they're talking about? Does it have something to do with the maharishi telling them certain ways to talk about Brian? Does anyone have any thoughts about that?

Okay so you know how I just said last time how emotionally mature George was? I still think it's generally more true of him than the others, but this right here? This is not it. "I don't want to do any of my songs in the show because they'll all just turn out shitty." Man has issues.

I think it's important to recognize that George and Paul have both said the literal word "divorce" and it's NBD. But when John does it, Paul takes it as "the groups really over and I have to go into hiding and not get out of bed and maybe od who knows." Why? There's another puzzle piece here that we're missing.

"Should we leave you for a while?" "YES!"

On the one hand I'm like "working on Maxwell is the last thing you guys should be doing with this time alone." But on the other thing maybe it's the only thing they can do at this point.

"Mal? You should get a hammer. And an anvil." As he's walking away. Main character in a contrived mad genius biopic. Except it's real.

"Joan" sounding suspiciously like "John" ... And then he goes "fool, Maxwell fool." Aka one of their ~special words~ New theory. John hates Maxwell because he dies in it. And Paul's the killer.

"Take it away Johnny." Even though it was George and John whistling before wasn't it? Did George get cut from the whistle chorus? Another straw on the camel's back.

I LOVE that John just does not know any of his own songs. Across the Universe my beloved!

On the glyn/Paul moment featured below, I have three thoughts. 1. Whore. 2. John Lennon villain origin story. 3. The fact that glyn didn't just tell John is striking.

"I wish it fucking would". "Cause I'm down." This lyric going from a self-soothing reassurance that his people aren't going to leave him that he'll always have this beautiful dream he's created with them. To this? I hate it here.

So there is a big emotional and energy difference between their Beatlemania selves singing "Rock and Roll Music" and their current selves. And part of it is due to the fact that they're just not as happy as they were then. But I think most of it is really just that they thrive when they're performing for an audience.

Possibly unpopular opinion (Or perhaps not idk): I love what they have done with Zuko and Ozai's relationship in the live action Netflix Avatar show.

In the cartoon we never get the ~vibes~ that Zuko has a complicated relationship with his father, only that it is abusive and one-sided in the sense only Zuko craves Ozai's approval, while Ozai straight up hates him, wants him dead or has no problem with him dying (Why doesn't he kill him if he has Azula? We don't know, plot has to happen, he sent Zuko to find the avatar in order to get rid of him, probably, or actually canon idk or remember), clearly prefers Azula to him as successor, etc, etc, etc (+ later the comics literally overkilled this trend "she was born lucky while..." omg stfu). Zuko is basically the perfect character to prove the fire nation is not all evil (Oh look, they hate him too, he is inherently their victim too from the very beginning).

So when Zuko switches sides in the cartoon, what I see as an adult rewatching is someone giving up on luxory, physical safety and... that is pretty much it. Sure it is a big deal to give up on those things to do what is right (Few would) and still awesome that he did the right thing in the end, but if you really think about it, he is not giving up that much, he is not giving up anything truly valuable to him. Respect? Honor? Sure he is said to have received it back after Azula "killed" Aang, but we never truly see it. For all intents and purposes his sister has that and wayyy more of it. His father's love and acceptance? Never had it, so he didn't truly "loose it" when he spoke up for those soldiers, got the scar and was banished, it is not really shown to have suddenly popped into existence when he was said to have killed the avatar. He literally had nothing in the fire nation, literally nothing. This could only make "doing the right thing" a lot easier for him, and for the adult audience (At least for me), his arc is just him realizing what is almost irritatingly obvious for us: That no one in the fire nation truly loves and respects him so might as well switch sides (Basically if we weren't also shown that Zuko is compassionate and does care about the horrible things the fire nation is doing, Ember Island Players would have gotten a bit of truth in it).

Now, in the live action, where do I even start? It has been so good so far when it comes to Ozai and Zuko. That man, if he hated Zuko in a cartoonishly evil way almost from birth, he sure doesn't show it. Don't get me wrong, he is just as abusive (Creepily so in many scenes, made me feel so protective of Zuko and Azula), but he is also shown to "care" about Zuko as in having some hope left that he can mold him into another powerful genocidal mini me. Is Azula winning by far? Ofc, she is still the prodigy, I am sure I am going to see flashbacks of favoritism later on. But Ozai doesn't yet seem to favor her in a way that makes Zuko's craving for his approval (Or even Ozai's hope in him as heir) hopeless. It seems, from his scenes with Azula, that Ozai foments the rivalry and competition between the two siblings not only because he personally thinks Azula is the best (Which he also might in this version), but also as a way of control through fear (Especially for prodigy Azula), and to make them (Especially comparatively weaker Zuko) "better", something this version of Ozai appears to think is possible EVEN when he banishes Zuko. Now, he might have done this "to get rid of him" as in the original, but in the live action he seems super open to and genuinely believe the idea that the exile could make Zuko stronger and better, not to mention worthy of the throne if he succeeds. Ozai treats Zuko like the heir despite favoring Azula is all I am saying. Zuko's actions are therefore almost impossible, yes, but not hopeless or even naive. And if this trend of Ozai's respect and "love" (Super on quotes) being achievable continues, Zuko's eventual turn to the good side will be much more powerful. He will have to give up much more after spending a summer with his abusive parent love bombing him for "killing" the avatar. Zuko's choice will be solely based on his findings about the horrors the fire nation has committed and not wanting to be the cause of more suffering even though he could have it all. Even though it was his fate to be his father's "mini me"-> Something terrifyingly likely and not so quickly discarded by the narrative itself as it was in the animated series.

I think the best part about this subtle change in the father-son dynamic (If it was the intention of the writers, I am aware it could have been unintended) is that the scar tm was a direct result of Zuko's compassion for those soldiers and not just the excuse Ozai used to banish him or "final straw" because he preferred Azula sooo much more, as it is pretty much implied later on in the animated series and comics by focusing so much on how much of a perfect victim Zuko was pretty much from birth. The addition of the 41st surviving because of Zuko was also pretty nice, and so is Zuko's relationship with them, he will need fire nation allies when he gets to the throne and this is a good start, something the animated series never touched upon much.

I am on episode 6 btw so my opinion might change. I will edit this post if that is the case. BUT my thoughts on these first scenes doesn't change, they are good imho

EDIT (And spoilers): I just watched Zhao’s revelation where he tells Zuko that Ozai would never let him return and he just wanted to use him to motivate Azula. It does change things and invalidates most of what I said, but taking out just this one scene, as I said, the Ozai-Zuko dynamic is great in this show, and also, Zhao is obviously not the most reliable source, because he was allied to Azula and obviously wanted to hurt Zuko, as he was losing the fight with him. There is also the fact that Azula wasn't watching Ozai and Zuko when Ozai told his son that he was being banished and that it was in part so he could get stronger etc, that was all for Zuko and had little way of serving as motivation for Azula (Unlike the scenes where Ozai praises Zuko in front of her, those could have totally been him bullshitting his daughter to motivate her to work even harder). So all in all this scene doesn't ruin the overall impression I had of the Ozai-Zuko father-son dynamic in the life action show. In fact, it could be taken to confirm one of my impressions which was that Ozai likes pitying his children against each other to push them harder.

EDIT 2: Ozai's reaction to Zuko's possible death is further proof imo that his “test” was very much real (even if almost impossible) and everything I said earlier still stands. He wouldn't mind that much if he died, it would just prove his “weakness”, and he is very pleased with Azula, but he didn't look happy or even indifferent when he learned the news.

Ben/Leslie (Parks and Rec): I love you and I like you. I mean, come on! There's nothing I love more than a healthy couple (we all know that's a lie cause my #1 ship is Musa and Riven but, like, stfu) that genuinely like each other and respect each other.

Mickey/Ian (Shameless): Me again, proving that I am a hypocrite with my so-called love of healthy relationships while actively LOVING dysfunction. I just love Mickey and I love how much he and Ian love each other. (I also love that Mickey became a groom-zilla - as a wedding professional that one made me laugh a lot). I cried when Mickey showed up as Ian's cell mate. Legitimately, cried 😭😭

Sakura/Tomoyo (Cardcaptors): Now, I watched the American version as a kid where they named Tomoyo MADISON??? and had her very much less in love with Sakura. That being said, I still shipped it. (And yet it still took me 25 years to figure out that I'm not straight?)

My girl was ROBBED at the Grammys. Rolling up the welcome mat deserved the best country album award. That shit had me feeling and crying like I was going through a divorce too (I am in a healthy, happy relationship). I listened to 70000 minutes of Taylor Swift last year and yet 4/5 of my top songs on Spotify were from this album.

Last Movie:

My friends and I (try) to do a monthly movie-night where every month gets a theme, then we suggest movies and vote on a winner. We haven't been able to get everyone together since September so we watched our October movie 2 weeks ago... Bring It On: Cheer Or Die. It was awful.

Currently Reading:

Sabriel by Garth Nix. I just got Terciel & Elinor, so I have to reread the whole series. I've read this series 3 times. I highly recommend.

Bo and Vincent would have had their teens through the 80's and their 20's through the 90's.

I don't think the boys watch a ton of TV--I don't think they've ever had cable, so they have to rent everything or pick it up on the antenna--but I think they both like genre and pulp stuff.

Horror is something they both like but other genres are split. Bo likes stuff with intrigue and action--so speculative sci-fi of the harder variety, heist/crime thrillers, war movies. Vincent likes surreal fantasy and art house stuff.

(I noticed Vincent has an interesting split in his own art--with his sculptures being all about realism and classic beauty. His paintings however are very surreal and allegorical--very Dali and Picasso. I guess he feels more comfortable experimenting in painting. It's easier to unfuck mistakes on canvas--you just paint over them.)

Anyway, Alien would have been a favorite for both of them.

Both would hate Star Trek (too moralizing) but enjoy The Twilight Zone. They're okay with Star Wars but it's not something they'd go out of their way to rewatch. Bo loves Indiana Jones and Vincent's enjoys it well enough. Blade Runner gets close to being too abstract for Bo's taste but he likes Harrison Ford so he indulges Vincent. Vincent liked Eraserhead and Twin Peaks but Bo couldn't stand them. Bo loves The Breakfast Club and (relates hard to Bender but would never admit it out loud) but Vincent resents 80's coming of age stories because they're "stupid" alienating.

They wouldn’t be super up to date on many movies/tv shows past the mid-90's but Bo still picks up rentals and discounted tv shows from store from time to time, when he's wanting to indulge in some downtime.

When it comes to books, Vincent is all about the classic "western literary canon." He likes classics from both antiquity and the romantic period. His favorite book is Frankenstein but he would never admit it because he's embarrassed to be so obvious and would claim his favorite is something like Dante's Inferno or Paradise Lost.

Vincent also likes graphic novels like The Crow and The Sandman and Tales from the Crypt but is generally disdainful of superhero comics unless its something really cool like Ghost Rider, then he'll take a little peak and tell Bo to STFU because "I saw you reading it on the couch last week too!"

Bo isn't much of a reader but he's been known to curl up with a detective novel from time to time--partially because he gets a giggle from the irony and partially because he always liked a good thriller, even before he started murdering people. He also picks up some non-fiction from time to time, usually something related to engineering or mechanics.

Thanks for your reply!! I can reassure you that Glenn's "out of ideas for s16" thing on the podcast likely isn't something that warrants concern (I've listened to all eps), because he's been saying that's been the case since iasip s2 and that ultimately it's probably best for the creative process to go in blank because those ideas tend to be the funniest (relatable writer insecurities). Charlie and Meg said they want to pitch simple ideas again after watching the early seasons so there's hope :)

Of course!!! And honestly that’s such a relief to know that it Glenn’s just always like that lmao. Like I said, I haven’t been keeping up with the podcast --I fell off after the Fight at the Hamburger store episode and haven’t been back since -- so it’s good to have the context for that.

TBH out of the three of them it’s always been Rob that I’ve been worried about the MOST when it comes to the integrity of Sunny. Glenn’s my fave I literally put him on a pedestal but also I feel like now we PROOF that sunny is clearly better with him in the writers room. Like it made such a difference having him back for s15. And Charlie (to me--again based of vibes) always seemed the most indifferent, and like maybe little on autopilot when it came to writing the past couple of years. Idk to me s12 is like the last that truly felt like Sunny to me. Sometimes I forget that I have to watch beyond that when I do a rewatch lmao RIP. I do love some of the s13 and 14 episodes but those seasons as a whole fell flat. s15 has some of that back so I’m hoping they get even better with s16. So if Charlie is back in the make Sunny Actually Good camp, then I have faith. Like Charlie and Meg along with Glenn can fully bully Rob into submission. I believe in them.

Sunny is best when it’s a show no one pays attention to--and then they feel like they can do whatever they want. I want the assholes that didn’t give a shit about winning an emmy. I want the gay-ass love story that won’t play in middle america but they’ll jam it down their throats anyway. Pandering to the vocal mainstream audience is something Rob probably will entertain. But Rob also says he listens to people “smarter” than him and that’s where Charlie+Glenn+Meg come in to tell him to stfu. Celeb cameos can work if they’re funny (they’ve done it before) but it has to be someone so absurd playing something ridiculous to work on Sunny. Or in this case RR as Mac’s BF bc him and Rob are joined at the hip and if I have to see you both shove your stupid soccer team down my throat, you BETTER kiss each other on the mouth i stg.

Yes, I hate Kizuna too! It's such a bad movie and I've been meaning to make a video essay about it. One of the thigns that annoys me is that in Tri, Joe's whole arc was Kizuna but better! He had to learn that growing up didnt mean leaving behind the people or things you care about or erase your old responsibilities or relationships!

What you say about growing up is exactly what pissed me off in Kizuna. Digimon re-entered my life now, where I've genuinely been independent and living on my own for the first time, and I'm slowly finding myself and realizing that I want to reconnect with the kid in me that I've tried to suppress all these years. Rewatching Digimon helped a ton in that; finding something I adored as a kid and looking at it from a new lens and appreciating it even more.

So those feelings of mine were very influencing while watching Kizuna, and not in a good way. Kizuna basically told us to let go and move on, that staying trapped in your childhood is bad, yadda yadda. But that's not what growing up should be about; nothing is "too childish" as long as you keep being a responsible adult. If you work 9-5, pay your bills, cover your needs, who's to say you're "immature" if you decide you want to sit down and eat chocolate milk cereal while you're not bothering anyone? But no, the film promotes the idea that once you grow up you've grown up, you have to leave what connects you to your childhood behind and move on to other, "greater" things.

And that's what you said about Jou's arc in tri. A lot of people hate tri. and it does indeed have a lot of flaws, but in my opinion it's as flawed as Kizuna is. At least it doesn't try to push a narrative that the characters have to reluctantly fit into, if anything, shit happens in tri. because the characters refuse to conform, Kizuna is the opposite (character-driven plot vs plot-driven characters, hmm...).

And yeah, as I said, I've got a long list of things that annoyed me in Kizuna, and honestly, as someone who just got back into Digimon in my late 20s, at a point in my life where I want not just to appreciate but to also re-embrace the things I liked in my childhood, it felt like it was telling me "STFU and let it go, you're too old for this shit lol" which like... okay. Y'all keep making Digimon shows and films to make money but I'm the immature one here. Okay.

That said, if you make the video essay, send it my way! And don't hesitate to send more asks about it, I haven't actually seen anyone else mention not liking Kizuna so I've felt kinda alone in sharing that view.
