A little rant about episode 11
Just finished watching episode 11, and to be honest I am so, so disappointed. I'm not one to complain openly about something, but right now I feel like it's time to.
Spoilers below, also tw: personal opinion, if you can't take that, please do not read this.
Also I'd like to state that I like bsd. I love bsd, I wouldn't have a blog and a tiktok account dedicated to the series if I didn't - this isn't to hate on the series nor on Asagiri, just my two cents regarding the plot.
I have voiced my concerns to friends and mainly on discord how the current direction of the manga and the plot worries me, and I am beyond stunned that my biggest fear actually came true.
All the 'Fyodor is my comfort character' personal stuff aside, I feel like since the prison break arc started, the quality of the writing and the plot hit an all time low.
From my perspective, we got this huge buildup about Fyodor being this absolutely genius of a character. He is smart, he accounts for every possibility and there is no detail that he could possibly miss.
On the other hand, we have Dazai, who is, well, just as smart and perceptive as Fyodor.
So, we have two very smart characters up against each other, which I get why is challenging from a writing perspective, however (especially) since the intrudction of Time Cat Lady, I feel like the writing went from a carefully and logically built up plot to throwing in deus ex machinas and a looot of explanations afterwards to conveniently give the upper hand to Dazai.
I have no problem with Fyodor dying and Dazai emerging as winner (actually I kind of do because I would've loved to see the Agency or Atsushi or Ranpo take him down, but what else could have possibly happened anyways? Dazai is a fan favourite, we don't kill the money machine), however I have a bone to pick with the execution.
I think I would've loved to see a more carefully constructed plot where I can actually root for characters and actually worry for them. Asagiri pulled way too many 'oh they look dead but oh wait actually this and that happened which the reader wasn't aware of so they're not dead' shenanigas to the point where, in my opinion, as readers we simply just couldn't take any major character 'death' seriously - they'll somehow be resurrected anyways or it's gonna eventually be revealed that they weren't even dead to begin with.
And this was the case with Dazai and Chuuya here as well. To me this feels more like trying to put out a fire because of being cornered and having created characters so smart that they prove to be too difficult to write (at least in a pace fast enough for monthly chapter releases?) than actually putting effort into the plot.
All the 'well actually Chuuya wasn't even a vampire' bullshit to me was just way too fucking convenient. I'm happy that Chuuya is alive and well, but this too just served as a convenient plot point to give Dazai the upper hand while dumbing Fyodor significantly down.
I'm sorry but I didn't interpret Fyodor's character so careless (especially for someone who's very sensitive about his physical health) as to not take the antidote as soon as he got out. I didn't get to know Fyodor who would just fall for that trick Dazai pulled.
I really feel like we missed out a LOT on Fyodor with no backstory or whatsoever provided. His character stayed shallow and empty, and I'm actually really mad at Asagiri about this because he was supposed to be this very dangerous and complex villain but I feel like what we were teased with was just not delivered.
I really hope we get a more refined manga ending or that this will be better executed in the upcoming chapters.
Once again, I'm not mad about Fyodor dying, I'm rather disappointed by the way it was delivered. It feels rushed, it feels empty and it didn't live up to my expectations at all.

weird question! Can Casey mittens extend his neck really far. He's looks like such a noodle. His body makes me think, he moves like he's made of water (if that makes sense) and the height incongruity would make sense if he could stretch himself out
he can and that Makes Sense! both the water thing and the height thing!

thoughts of Lilia and baby!Silver with "So this is love" from Cinderella? That song has such a gentle sound and the lyrics, god, it's simple but reminds me so much of them. People can say what they want, but this is their anthem. They're gonna have to pry this headcanon out of my dead hands
oh, anon, this ask has kept me sane the past few days.
"so this is what makes life divine" "so this is the miracle that i've been dreaming of"
these two lines in particular jumped out at me, and sorry to fixate on this specific concept as i always do, but i can never stop thinking about the shift and growth from lilia vanrouge, general of the fae army, into lilia vanrouge, silver's father.
regardless of how much/how little you know of ch7, we still don't have a lot of detail about lilia's past prior to his role as general beyond the knowledge of his close relationship with malleus' parents. what was it like for him, had he always been an orphan? what were the circumstances of his lonesome existence, especially when we know that such a time period was rife with human-fae conflict? had his family been the victims of some attack? was he abandoned in the hopes of survival? we don't know.
but what we do know is that his life hasn't been an easy one at best, and harsh at most. he's still so young in fae years when he ascends to the position of general, with the weight and responsibility of not only protecting the fae of briar valley and the valley itself, but the ruling family— one of his oldest and dearest friends, and their unhatched child. he's cut his teeth in the most unforgiving of environments, been constantly exposed to the brutalities and casualties of war, and the stress of a life like that is all he knows.
so now we turn to the gift of unconditional, fated love— a love that was destined for him, pure and sweet. a love that comes not from his own kind, but from the child of his enemies, a child that he would be understood in destroying, a child....that loves him freely.
when has lilia ever experienced something like this? what could this love be, if not a divine miracle? he has never known how full, how exciting, how promising life could be until silver's existence. he has never had anyone look at him and not see the general, the advisor, the orphan— but lilia, just lilia, and love him utterly for that fact alone.
he gave silver a blessing on the night that he found him, but really, who was the one truly blessed?
and in return, i'd like to offer up "first love" from one of my favorite kdrama soundtracks— the gentle, rising swell of the music, the soft and aching notes of the piano... it just captures how much of how i feel that lilia must have felt when he held that child in his arms for the first time and stared in awe as it turned, unafraid, into his chest, seeking the warmth and comfort of his very presence. i actually write my softer lilia and silver pieces to this song, it means so much to me :')

You know that feeling when you're writing on your silly little story and suddenly the adhd is kicking hard and you end up writing half a chapter describing how sealing techniques work, pulling it all out of your ass because the canon doesn't really disclose how any of that really works?
When you didn't mean to write any scene like that at all?
Yeah, how's your Monday treating you?

self indulgent babbling about my fucking oc and jordan as i try to figure some stuff out
Sick as fuck thinkin about Lettie Stuff. Having her grow up at the temple as a weird seemingly divine being was a super fun decision but also means I have to extrapolate and just straight up invent a Lot of things jbhuoihkbhujhkn Thus my tired mulling over how I see Jordan. I still don't really know, but I'm slowly putting an idea together. While I'm still struggling to make out the exact feelings on both ends (Mostly Jordan's. Hard to read motherfucker) I do think Lettie looks up to them a lot. Just. ... Not in the same way that everyone else does lmao. More thoughts under cut
He's aspirational in her eyes less as a figure of purity and more as an example of Incredible Terrifying Charisma and Influence over people. She really did learn from the best!!! (They even both have that weird thing where their smiles don't tend to reach their eyes, which wasn't intentional on my part at all but is weirdly cute in an unnerving way lmao. Family (????) Resemblance if you will.)
Jordan was probably like. An initiate or more probably (for my convenience) Freshly Cloistered when Bailey threw the lamb brat at the temple I'd think???? But based on their vibes maybe weirdly influential even then. Somehow seems a natural person to throw a magic seemingly heavensent sheep thing at. ... Plus, they just strike me as someone that has a Way with kids. Like to the extent that I can picture them being literally the SOLE person Lettie genuinely liked growing up, unnatural magnetism and all.
Unsure what the temple's feelings on Gender Stuff is, but in any case, Jordan might be the only one to know about Lettie's AGAB, also. Seems uh. Harder to gaslight than everyone else about that, especially with the relative closeness.
These dayssssss... relationship is probably complicated???? Even if they are still one of the only people she likes, the situation feels smothering and like a LOT of keeping of secrets from them (Like uhhh y'know. The fact that a good chunk of the other people at the temple are abusing her in a way that could be considered a bit 'sullying') and at least from Lettie's POV, an implicit assumption of extremely Conditional love. I like to imagine it's a genuine two-way kinda familial bond, but not always a great one lol. Like. Even at best, controlling as fuck, in the name of keeping her Pure and Safe. (That last one's somehow harder??? Sickly creature. Also she keeps getting concussions slipping on temple floors on accounts of the hooves :/ )
yeah. She wants them to be Proud of her but also wants to shake them by the neck until they Understand and also wants to be free of them and also wants to stay safe with them forever and it's a Lot.
I don't think Lettie is Sydney's biggest fan lmao. fuckin tattletale

Today I am thinking about one of my favorite elements to be part of a story's ending. It's basically "NPCs rise up".
There comes a moment when the heroes cannot handle a problem. They may be overwhelmed or just about defeated, or maybe they're busy with a greater issue, or perhaps this problem is in the way of the heroes reaching the root issue. Regardless of the specifics, the setup is that the heroes either cannot handle it, or the consequences of the heroes handling it would be too great.
Vitally, this goes for all of the heroes. None of the major characters who might be capable of dealing with it are in a position to help - too far away, already occupied with something else, caught the damsel ball, doesn't matter. Help isn't coming.
Except then help does come. It's just not heroes. It's the handful of one-shot characters the hero befriended along the way and the audience subsequently forgot about. It's the notable characters from arcs we left behind long ago. It's the ordinary people of the setting turning up to do whatever they can to help. The more minor they are, the harder it hits.
This gathering of minor characters or faceless background turns the tide. The day is saved, because the many came to support the few.
Reduces me to a squishy blob every time.

thinking about how at my weekly writing workshop last night my irl next to me wrote the most beautiful poetry snippet that had me sobbing, pulling the hair from my scalp out by the fistful, vomiting, etc. while I was writing the beginning of the world’s vaguest, objectively bad character study.

So in your most recent ramble on Theories technically isn't Frank being atheist slightly concious of what's going on cannon since artwork of him being aware of other puppet parts was in the recent update? What if some neighbors really know nothing but others actually do know of a little bit of what's happening but Wally doesn't realize they do so he tries to keep face?
Though I'll admit with your idea of that not being the "Real" Barnaby in the Interview may explain why Wally went really quiet during the interview even when being directly asked things once Barnaby showed up
Kind like he was so focused on the "That's not Barnaby. Why do they Look like him? Who are They??" That the Interviewers questions got completely ignored as "Barnaby" answered the question instead until Wally snapped out of it.
Just thoughts on your thoughts of many thoughts- Thoughts!
sorry i Did Not See This!
for a moment i was very confused as to what you meant by "athiest" but i see - you meant "at least!" yes, i've been tentatively believing in Frank being a bit aware because of your stated reason, and also purely based on vibes and how he's been shown to be more, ah, cynical than the others. or... knowledge seeking? nosy but in a technical way. mild example is when he mused on how he's never seen a blue dog before in his bug audio w/ Barnaby.
and i do believe in the idea that everyone - or almost everyone knows somethings up, but they're not sure what / it's an easy feeling to ignore. like how i've talked about Howdy potentially knowing that he's selling props / inedible objects as food, but everyone can eat it anyway. so he's just like "fuck it yeah sure, i'll sell soap as mashed potatoes", yk? then of course in the Halloween update - which i know this ask was sent before it, apologies again - Sally knows there's somethin' the fuck up in the neighborhood at night. i wouldn't be surprised if everyone has a little Something they've noticed that bothers them deep down...
and Wally... honestly i'm starting to suspect that - again! If there's a time discrepancy between "official" audios and the secret ones or at least all audios vs his interactions with the whrp/qa/You - Wally in the official audios isn't quiiiite up to speed? like, he probably knows what he is and the like, but he's still figuring out everyone's places and the nature of his existence. like how in the Halloween "secret" audio 00, where he eats part of Barnaby's candy apple - it seemed like it took a great effort, like Wally was just trying it out. like a "i think i can do this... i'm trying..." it strikes me as a "new" thing for him there. he's not accustomed to it? idk... but whatever the case Wally certainly knows that he has to keep Secrets! can't tell the others about literally anything!
as for the interview - tbh i don't think Wally was quiet because he noticed that Barnaby was (potentially) just a person in a suit. several reasons! i have a feeling that Wally being Aware means that he understands, at least on some level, what a puppet is and the nature of it, so it wouldn't really disturb him? or maybe it would... apple pie and all... SO! another piece of reasoning! it's possible that Wally had no idea that that Barnaby "wasn't" Barnaby. After all, how could he tell?
personally, i think Wally was just quiet because, well, he's not much of a talker - at least not around Company it seems! in all of the audios where he's with other neighbors, he fades into the background and defers to them, only chiming in occasionally. and the Interview appears to be set in the early days of Welcome Home the tv show, so Wally would still be uh. for lack of a better word, fresh outta the box. if Barnaby starts talking, naturally Wally would sit back and let him lead. Wally takes a beat too long formulating a response and Barnaby barrels on - well what would Wally do? interrupt? that would be rude...

YOU
YOU GET IT
i don't mean to ramble but i am so emotional!! about them!! how much lilia truly loved him at first sight that it manifested beyond a simple blessing to physically alter his appearance!!
i'm just consumed at the thought that lilia's love overcame the knight of dawn's raging genetics and punted them out of the way to ensure that while silver may never carry fangs nor pointed ears, he will never doubt his father's love for him when he looks in a mirror from now on and sees the blessing of the night, of moonlight, woven into his very hair.
the knowledge that silver is love made visible— the love of his parents to care for and protect their child from a world of war and suffering; the love of his father, a true love so powerful to leave an indelible mark on both their hearts so much so that we're traversing what should be the greatest agonies of lilia's life.... only to realize that they were all necessary, that he accepts them even, if it meant finding his greatest joy imaginable, that he would relive them all to cherish the memory of finding silver; the love of one of the greatest mages to have lived, the fae prince himself, who sought to halt time to stop the tears of the human closest to his heart; the love of his childhood friend, who would have stopped at nothing to save him and whose happiest dream was not complete without silver's presence.
he's the glue of this silly little family, the symbol that unconditional true love can come from your greatest enemies and be the mercy you need to finally welcome peace into your heart.
yana toboso what the genuine fuck have you done to me
