Hi!!!
My name is Tigrensis and I'm a UK based costume maker specialising in LARP and fantasy costume.
Here's some of my past work!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really like mushrooms and lichens and recently I've been looking at incorporating them into my work, in fact I'm working on a costume entirely themed around decay and fungus. You can see some pictures from this above.
I also love costume breakdown, I'm looking to experiment in the future in using plants as a method of breakdown. Will it work? Who knows.
This blog is where I am going to post more long form writing that wouldn't fit on my other social media (check out my carrd for links)! I love to talk about costume and sewing so don't be shy if you want to send an ask.
The things I'll be talking about will range from the practical e.g. the horrors of trying to find mint fabric to the more theoretical stuff like the significance of mannequin choice in displaying museum costume.
Last but not least, I am available for commission!!! If you have an idea you want turning into reality then feel free to shoot me a quick message. I also have made to order and unique costume items available on my Etsy including tunics, robes and hats!!!
I hope you enjoy your time on my blog!!!

As I've previously mentioned, I quite enjoy LARPing. At first, I got into it because of the "combat sports" element to it (the ones in Bulgaria at least can be somewhat competitive when it comes to that).
However, I eventually switched to a more RP-heavy role and founded an in-game lottery organization. We'd organize raffle-style events where we'd allow players to win stickers and other types of small merch. This is the lottery logo I did a while ago, we have it printed an it usually hangs next to our booth.
We hav to skip the big Bulgarian event last year but I hope to get back into it in 2024.

So you have asked me so many times now, here is the dress again. The one next to me is my junior in his squire's garb. I hope that I will finally get the dress completely finished this year and that I will look better overall - the operations and illnesses have left their mark.

The Squad at Ohio Ren Fest in September I was unfortunately not in my full armor at the time because it was rustier than a mfer and needed maintenance. The rest of the gang nailed it.

You might be afab nonbinary costumer when...
You forgot you have breasts when drafting pattern pieces for a new tunic and are shocked when the pins pop out when you try it on
As told to friends on discord:
I was making a new 13th century style underdress for an event next month and forgot to account for having a chest (lovely non binary thing to do right there)
So when I pinned the sleeves and sides together to check for the fit
When I lowered my arms, the pins *flew* out of place like in a cartoon
And I thought "I *broke* it! How did I *break* it!" And then I made eye contact with myself in the mirror and Realized and have been laughing about it for the past 12 hours

A cursed sword pulled from a wounded god.
This was a fun project, it was more of a restoration/conversion than a full build. It was originally an old style boffer but the tape was breaking and we wanted to save the amazing pommel. So I removed the old blade using my bandsaw then built a new style blade for it.

The finished quiver! Oh my gods, took a while to make. Specially for @masterofrecords
It is so large because it is for LARP and the tips are big and soft so they do not harm people.

Just got back late last night from my first ren faire/larp and god it was so fun!!! It was also the first ren faire in the Philippines!
I also learned my gay audacity, years of "strategizing" (read as fantasizing), and like the 3 times I tried archery (which all times I was standing still, had all the time in the world, and was shooting at still targets) and all the swinging around sticks I did as a child was not enough to suddenly make me a god at battle
Who would have guessed?

Major Project: Stanpipe
I started creating my next LARP character, Stanpipe, in late 2021. He has had plenty of time to develop and be refined as my current character seems to be immune to death (I've been playing them for almost six years at this point). Stanpipe began as a thought, ‘I want to play a healer’, and has slowly been refined into the horrible little mushroom man he is today.
The costume, like the character, has gone through multiple iterations. I started by making a generic blanket cape, I hadn’t decided on the decay theme yet and instead, I was working on something simple to keep me warm at night. I embroidered dark blue blanket stitches around the edge and some beads on the edge worn around the neck. I also added some lavender embroidery to the front. I wanted to look non-threatening, I'm not a big fan of combat so I went with a softer look initially.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a while I started to develop the idea of a mushroom-themed character, at events, I saw a lot of people making characters with mushroom aesthetics. These people were often going down the route of cute fey characters with fly agaric themed clothing. I like these costumes but they don’t appeal to me as something I'd wear. I’m not interested in representations of mushrooms that remove them from their context of decay and rot. I’m much more interested in a darker interpretation of a mushroom character. I have also completely flipped on the idea of looking non-threatening, I want to look scary, I want people to be nervous when I come to heal them, and I want to have fun whilst I'm doing it.
I settled on a core concept of a character who had once been a fey but had taken a nap in a forest one day. A few thousand years later he woke up, to find that he had been partially consumed by mushrooms, he had decayed whilst staying alive. There's a lot more I want to say about decay and how it relates to my identity and experiences. I would much rather give those thoughts a separate place to breathe.
The question of whether Stanpipe is the mushrooms, the original fey, or a mixture of both will never be answered. I want to leave this ambiguous for multiple reasons. The main reason is that there's no sense in having an overly written backstory as it does not impact what happens in the game, it can also be difficult to keep track of. Instead, I have a few key facts for my characters that I use to inform their actions and reactions.
My key facts for Stanpipe are:
He was a fey farmer in ancient history
He took a nap one day
He woke up like this
He knows nothing about anything
To match my costume to my character I ended up altering a straw boater and my already made blanket cloak. I used dried lichens that I had gathered after a storm to alter the hat and make it look taken over by nature. I'm still very happy with the hat and I’m looking forward to wearing it in character.
Tumblr media
My blanket cloak I am less happy with my, I started by painting lichens onto the blanket using a mix of acrylic paints. I experimented a lot with texture and colour to varying degrees of success. Some of the lichens are too bright and I need to darken them in the future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also used real lichens on the shoulders with mushrooms sculpted out of clay. It looks nice in pictures but I quickly found that the lichens, which were living in this case, were difficult to maintain and would be extremely fragile when worn. This fragility would be made even worse by the fact that the LARP I attend is a boffer system meaning that I’d need to be able to move quickly and take hits. For now, I’ve decided to take off the lichens and mushrooms and will re-use them on other, more stable, projects.
Tumblr media
To complete this costume there are still a few things left to do, I need to make shirts and trousers. The trousers are almost complete, they just need a waistband (I think I’ll turn the trousers into a separate post because I like them so much). Normally I would use one of the shirts I already own but because Stanpipe is decay-themed I want to be able to break down the shirts and make them look old and rotted. I wouldn’t want to do that to something that wasn’t built for it. It also means that I can make them look however I want, it can be hard sometimes to find a LARP kit that fits me well so I don’t want to buy something that does and then restrict it to being used by just one character.
I’m also starting on making some vests for the character to wear which I am going to go for it with the breakdown. One will be made of scuba suede which is a thick stretchy synthetic fabric with a pile. The other will be knitted from alpaca wool and will have tufts of felting wool knitted into it as I go, the goal is to create a mossy appearance. I’m going to be experimenting with growing plant life on them to see what sort of damage the root system does. I'm expecting some sort of staining at the least however I am currently sceptical about whether any damage will occur to the scuba suede because of how thick it is.
Here are some work-in-progress images from the trousers and the vests.

LARP/homebrew D&D currency idea
I had this idea when I was making things with wire, so I decided to share it! Hopefully some people use it as well :D
Tumblr media
Basically this kind of currency is just a bunch of small(-ish?) hoops instead of flat coins. They can come in all kinds of sizes, shapes, etc. The ones that are thicker or are more intricate can be worth more, or maybe every kingdom uses a different kind? For example, one kingdom might use simple, thinner hoops while another has more intricate hoops made of materials that are more precious. This can also say a lot about the kingdom itself; the kingdom that uses more intricate designs on their hoops might care about the little details and/or be a more art driven community while the other kingdom might care more about efficiency.
Tumblr media
Like having different shapes and sizes, the hoops might be made of different materials in the same kingdom to represent a higher currency; maybe a smaller metal hoop is worth 1 coin while a bigger hoop or one made of better quality material might be worth more. The hoops can also be linked together (using the cut shown) so that they're easier to carry and be harder to lose.
Tumblr media
Since the hoops can be linked together, they can also be used as accessories! This can both be useful because it prevents your money from taking up space in your bag/inventory, and because it lets you show off your wealth. You can also go the simple route and hang the chains made of hoops on your wrists or clothes, or you can be a little more creative and come up with other ways to carry your coin like hanging them on the horns or tails of your character if they have any. This can also have side effects (which means more roleplay potential, hehe) like someone attempting to kidnap someone else because they have way too many hoops on themselves, or it might make it easier to steal your money depending on how you accessorize it.
