I loved the "gun-axe" with the dagger, because the idea was at least potentially practical - if your weapon has been swung into something it won't easily pry out of, the backup weapon is already in your hand, and presumably a twist away.
I also found myself wanting to end the presentation of combo weapons with a scene from original Macgyver - "Hey man, that's an uzi!" "Now it's a wrench."
Reaction to this post.
Indian axes and picks often had extra features of one kind or another, though a dagger screwed into the haft seems so common that I sometimes wonder if it could be considered as "secret".
Oddly enough the only Indian weapons without this kind of screw-in dagger - at least I've never seen pictures of any - are the various styles of mace, and I have no idea why.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This axe also has a built-in gun...
Tumblr media
...although since the axe-head is mounted alongside the barrel, it's more a gun with a built-in axe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously the screw-in dagger trick won't work with a sword, since its tang is in the way, but there are other methods; for instance here's a khanda broadsword with a katar punch-dagger that clips to one side, and a single-shot gun built into the other.
Tumblr media
That katar could have had more features itself: a couple more pistols...
Tumblr media
...or a hand-guard and a couple more blades...
Tumblr media
...or a hand-guard and a LOT more blades...
Tumblr media
...though now we're into hard-to-wear territory, also Just Showing Off.
Even a plain-seeming katar might not be as plain as all that, with a scissors mechanism turning one blade into three...
Tumblr media
...or into two blades and a gun.
Tumblr media
I've mentioned more than once that anyone creating a fantasy weapon should check out what Indian weaponsmiths did for real - and this post hasn't even touched on how they put sword-hilts on things that weren't swords, or made blades in weird shapes Because They Could.
I've blogged about both in the past, so take a look... :->

Something I’ve been meaning to do for a while. Drawing weapons!
A bit different form my usual character designs but can’t have my fantasy adventurers go around without a trusty weapon now, right?
These are some weapon practice designs, the lore is based off of in game weapons from Wynncraft which is an MMORPG in Minecraft, so all the weapons are quite pixelated in-game.

are you taking requests? if so, draw a weird sword?
Tumblr media
Headsman's Cleaver
(Also I should be clear, I don't take requests so much as I sometimes look through the suggestions people send me and draw them if I have a good idea for it and can do it quickly as a warmup. There are messages I have from years ago at this point backed up in there and who knows if I'll ever get to them. If you have something you seriously want me to draw for you and you want an input into how the final piece looks you'll have to commission me through [email protected].)

Four Thoughts
obligatory his eyes change color hc
Four talks to himself in minish, so no one can snoop. (except for, well, the minish, but he doesn't care cause they're nice)
the way the colors originally split: Red is positive emotions, Blue is negative emotions, Vio is logical hard facts intelligence, Green is nuanced people intelligence.
but that's not their entire personalities. blue is also determination :)
Yo what if their sword could kinda shapeshift for each of the colors?
Red: Shinobu’s sword from demon slayer
Blue: Antarcticite’s sword from lotl
Vio: pure nail from hollow knight
Green: Alhaithem’s sword from genshin impact
and ofc, they also all use the base version of the sword and their other preferred weapons.
oh! oh! what if two colors piloting means dual blades?? like Lady Maria from bloodborne! or Zuko from atla!

DD mentioned that you designed the Gonne in Terry Pratchett’s Men At Arms, so I just have to say thank you for creating one of the most plausible but terrifying weapons for that world!
NB, I did NOT design the "Gonne" (from "Men At Arms") - that's Terry's very own, and it's a gunpowder weapon based on the Harmonica Gun. (Look it up.)
Tumblr media
Yul Brynner carried one in the spaghetti Western “Adiós, Sabata”, and - given the presence and plot relevance in MAA of a musical watch like the one in “For A Few Dollars More” - the Sabata movie may well be where Terry saw it.
Tumblr media
Read more in this post from 4 years ago, waaay down near the bottom, including the vexatious problem of a writer carefully concealing what the McGuffin / Plot Device is, then having all that subtlety wasted by an artist (Josh Kirby in this instance) who paints it clear, distinct, and obvious on the cover...
Tumblr media
(According to The Annotated Pratchett File, Terry didn’t mind. That was the official position, anyway...)
*****
What I designed was the prototype Spring-gonne / One-shot.
Terry and I were sitting in the convention bar and he described something he was thinking of for another book (which became ”The Fifth Elephant”). I mentioned the Wel-Rod sleeve gun designed for SOE.
This was basically a huge silencer built around a one-shot firing mechanism, carried hidden up a coat-sleeve on a rubber lanyard.
Tumblr media
A jerk of the arm sent it down into the hand, the weapon was pressed tight against the target and fired (unnoticed in ordinary street noise), then the rubber cord whisked it back out of sight while the assassin walked away from someone who’d apparently tripped over their own feet...
It was meant ONLY for stealthy contact-range assassination, so was exactly the sort of "not-for-threat-just-for-killing" weapon he had in mind and which Vimes so dislikes.
Terry got very interested, explained that it couldn't be a gunpowder weapon and after a few more questions from me ("does Ankh-Morpork have a tech level that can make helical springs?" was one), I got a pen and some paper napkins and sketched a few designs.
They were based around the telek spring-guns in my own books, weapons to fill that inconvenient across-the-room distance between sword and bow and which, as described, have a very satisfying pump-action threat gesture - at least if the hero using them has two working arms...
The original version of the One-Shot was like a bicycle pump from the Dark Side - pull out then puuush in to cock it, turn one way to lock, muzzle-load a bolt and turn the other way to shoot. What finally appeared in print was rather different ("for reasons of Plot" as Terry told me much later; for instance the version in “The Truth” no longer enclosed the bolt so Mr Pin could light its incendiary tip) though I can still read the ancestry of the first scribble in its description. :->
I've still got one of them but have no idea where (try finding a single sheet of crumpled napkin in a house with two writers!); it’s something like this:
