Kwanzaa Kujichagulia 2023
This Kwanzaa we will focus on empowering yourself, reconnecting with your community, and learning survival skills from your ancestors. Do not allow the word “ancestor” to scare you. This society forces you to learn traditions and ancestors that are not yours like Santa, the tooth fairy, Halloween, 4th of July and so forth. If you are willing to celebrate those things then why not your own people?
Tumblr media
Today is Kujichagulia, so we light the red candle to symbolize the blood that pumps life and self-determination through our veins. Umoja reminded us that we must stick together in order to create a bright future, however today we will place all of our focus on ourselves. If we are not properly aligned with our emotions and actions, it opens a door that can cause harm to our community.
New Year Resolution
Most people change their environment, acquaintances and lifestyle during the new year, but that is actually the worst time to do so. Firstly, why would you wait for a specific month to change things that need to be changed right now? Secondly, your mindset is being served on a silver platter. You do not know what the future holds! Your ancestors had to live their day-to-day based on starving, sleeping outside, constant walking, fighting and fleeing wild animals, while your daily concern is if your food is too cold from the microwave.
Nature
Why is your new year resolution during the season of death? No wonder it never comes true. If you truly want to do a new year resolution it should be in spring when nature finishes its rebirth cycle. Death is necessary so don’t get gloomy about it because without it we wouldn’t have space for anything new. You may not be sleeping next to bears at night anymore but you can surely improve other things like your concentration, discernment, observation, balance, temper, empathy, speech, and confidence.
Technology
Put your phone, remote and laptop down. Most people spend hours on social media feeding themselves garbage. There is no reason why you should know more information about celebrities than your own skills in life. Technology is cool but it shouldn’t dictate your entire life. Besides, you should enjoy what’s left of nature and freedom before it’s attempted to be stripped away from us, again.

Kujichagulia 2022-23
The first day of Kwanzaa represented being a part of the community because life revolves around communication and it cannot thrive without it. However, there is an opposite to everything in this world, therefore you must also provide yourself with self-care. Thus, the red candle is lit today to represent strength, determination, and grounding.
Tumblr media
Kujichagulia Activities Part 1
A lot of things in this world is spoken to you in a watered-down manner to teach you how to decode messages like a riddle, because everything will not get handed or spoken to you directly. Similar to a dark and gloomy sky, you automatically know that it is going to rain. Also, you might have heard that it is important for us to spend time alone, but why? It is due to our energies being drained like how you feel after a long day of work. People are full of energies and that is why you can "feel the vibe of the room" or "negative energy." Thus, take this day to nurture yourself with self-care. As I said yesterday in Umoja, everything has a meaning even the days of the week. Today is Tuesday, the day of action. So start moving! Begin your workout routine, clean up your room, and start journaling.
Symbolization: Colors
Many people contradict themselves all of the time by saying things like, "things happen for a reason" or "there's an opposite to everything" but if that same person breaks their arm then those quotes are no longer valid until a new favorable situation comes along. So, it is important for us to remain open minded. Unfortunately, technology is making people neglect their spiritual senses (sometimes you think that you are sad about things in the physical world, but in reality your spiritual world is imbalanced.) Your ancestors were surrounded by nature so they constantly explored and created things all day long. But, what hobbies or discoveries are you doing? And discovering a post on Facebook does not count.
Imagine if you were to buy things for a Kwanzaa celebration. Would you buy decorations with the colors pink, grey, and purple? Possibly not, because the holiday has a specific set of colors because of its meaning and vibe. Colors shape the reality of your mental state. Have you noticed that most fast food places are red and yellow? This is because red stimulates your appetite and yellow brings in a welcoming feeling.
Here's a few colors with their representations and how they affect your life:
Black
Power, elegance, authority. The opposite is fear, rebellion, darkness. This makes sense why black cats (and other black things) are feared, but black cats also symbolize protection, fortune, and adaptability. So next time you see a black cat do not be afraid because it is most likely a message that you need to ground your mental, spiritual, or physical life better.
Red
Action, courage, security. The opposite is sacrifice, danger, survival. This is why you instantly stop your car when you are approaching a red light because it will create danger if you do not halt your vehicle just like a red stop sign. Blood is red and you need it for survival.
Green
Rebirth, nature, health. The opposite is death, jealousy, greed. This is why the most healthiest foods are your greens! When the winter time comes flowers die, but flowers eventually blossom again. In addition, money makes some people jealous or greedy.

Ujamaa 2022-23
Today is the 4th day of Kwanzaa, thus the second red candle is lit to represent the bloodline that keeps us connected to our ancestors. It is disgusting that their crafts have been ignored, retaught, and hidden from us. Thankfully, we still carry their traits, talents, and knowledge because the truth is always there and will vividly come to the light as it is now. Ujamaa reminds us that it is a must to strive with integrity and honesty so we can attract a positive outcome for our community and ourselves.
Tumblr media
Journal Prompt: Be honest with yourself and open to improving yourself.
1) What are my strengths and weakness and how can I improve them?
2) What am I insecure about? What responsibilities am I neglecting?

Ujima 2022-23
Yesterday's symbolization described the importance of understanding colors since it affects our mood and shapes our reality. One of the colors that were mentioned was the color green which symbolizes rebirth, nature, and health; however, before we dig into today's nguzo saba, I want you to imagine what a rainforest looks like then tell me what you see. Most likely you see the color green and different species like monkeys, birds, butterflies, frogs, deer, and beyond. This is due to life representing an environment filled with people, animals, and insects that strives together in a community even if everyone is different. Thus, the first green candle is lit today to symbolize togetherness. When we help our brothers and sisters solve their problems, we can accomplish anything and make our overall community strong.
Tumblr media
Ujima Activities Part 1
Tony Robbins, a motivational speaker, said that peoples favorite topic is to speak about themselves. It is good to have a healthy self-esteem, but most times it is excellent to listen instead of speaking. For the rest of the week, listen more and speak less about yourself. You are an amazing person, but there are also so many other amazing people and conversations that you are missing out on because you mostly focus on yourself. Today when you are roaming around your city or the workplace, you should work on your rapport and friendliness to fully embody the energy of today.
Symbolization: Words
I have been learning different languages for many years which made me realize something odd about English. "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" I do not believe that this is an accurate statement. Yesterday, I stated in Kujichagulia that you cannot be a hypocrite with quotes. If you pray to God with words so he can give you something in your life, but in the same breath say that words do no mean anything then which is it? Do words mean something or does it not? In conclusion, I am trying to say that words are powerful, especially in the English language where there are many curse words and I am not talking about swearing.
Before I further explain, I want you to think about voice pitch. If you are in your bedroom and you can barely hear your friend's conversation then you might think that is everything is okay, but little did you know they almost got into a fight. Just because it was not a stereotypical loud argument does not make the quarrel invalid and words are similar to that. Just because morning looks different than mourning does not mean that they are completely different like fraternal twins.
I'm sorry- I am a sorry person (This phrase is a low vibrational thing to say and not true. Look up "sorry person" on Google and you'll see two different definitions of this phrase.)
Good bye- Good buy (This phrase means thanks for letting me buy your time, it was a good purchase of energy)
Impossible- I'm Possible (This word is saying that nothing is impossible because the word itself means I'm possible.)
I have noticed that in other languages words are very descriptive and usually have a very positive meaning, but in English (and other languages) there are a lot of words and phrases with double meanings, and this can cause your energy to feel depleted or change your mindset subconsciously. I recommend substituting words and phrases so you do not manifest negative energy. Instead you could say things like: I apologize, have a good day, or it is possible.

Umoja
Today is 26 December 2021 and the 1st day of Kwanzaa. I will continue to celebrate Kwanzaa similar to last year by exploring and producing art and intention. Our ancestors frequently used intention to celebrate, pray, and receive guidance because they understood that materials should not control our beings due to it lacking value in the spiritual realm. I will post per diem to summarize the principle of the day and ways to incorporate its energy into our atmosphere until 1 January 2022, the last day of Kwanzaa.
Tumblr media
Things to remember:
Umoja- Unity
Kinara- Candle Holder
Mazao- Crops
Bendera- Flag
Kikombe cha umoja- Unity Cup
7 nguzo saba- The 7 Principles
Which candle is lit today?
I decorated my environment with symbols: mazao, kinara, and bendera to represent Kwanzaa. I do not have a physical candle holder nor candles, therefore I drew 7 candles to replace the idea of physical candles because the intention of the drawn candles are just as important as the physical ones. For today, the black candle is lit to represent black people and the principle, unity.
  What does Umoja represent?
Unity is essential in our community because it reminds us about the importance of sticking together. As a result of this, we have freedom and the ability to continue our legacy. Even if you have never learned about your African heritage, you still carry their bloodline and perform their traditions such as prayer, manifestation, unity, spirituality, movement, dance, and song. I often hear people say that black people do not stick together but I do not understand why this quote holds power. If someone says something negative about you, do you promote it or allow it to de-escalate? Another disheartening idea is that Kwanzaa is a silly holiday, but how can a holiday that represents positivity, being kind and helpful, connecting to our ancestors, and pulling our strength together as one, be known as a silly holiday? It sounds like another form of separation promoted by negativity to make us abandon one another and that should not be entertained. If you lead by example then your community will flourish even if it has only helped 1 person at a time. Today I will listen and dance to African music, draw African art, learn more about our heritage, and develop a stronger connection to our ancestors by acknowledging their strength and providing it into the environment. I will also place a water bottle to the side to symbolize kikombe cha umoja. Each day, energy will travel into the water bottle and on the the last day of Kwanzaa, I will drink the bottle and allow it to fill my spirit with positive energy sent from our ancestors. You can do the same with a water bottle or with a cup and if you are using a cup then you can fill water in it each day or on the last day of this holiday. I am delighted to celebrate Kwanzaa once more and I wish you all a blessed and happy Kwanzaa.

I do not have a physical candle holder nor candles, therefore I drew 7 candles to replace the idea of physical candles because the intention of the drawn candles are just as important as the physical ones. The far right, green candle will be lit today to represent hope and perseverance. Life operates on a balance scale that makes certain things easier or harder to obtain depending on your person. This is where the popular phrase, "life is not fair" comes into play. You could think of life like that quote or you can strive to master your weaknesses because your weaknesses are actually stronger than your natural strengths.
  What does Ujima represent?
Yesterday I started my day in an unfavorable position, but despite that I still maintained a positive mindset while seated in a unmovable vehicle. I often glanced out of the car window due to boredom until I saw a handful of squirrels leap from tree to tree. I noted that the squirrels interacted with one another based on their actions, so I quickly researched the meaning of squirrels. The words I stumbled across were: multitasking, planning ahead, and being abundant. Those terms helped me understand the meaning of Kujichagulia in a deeper way, but now the third day of Kwanzaa has arrived and resembles the number 3 which represents the bridge between 2 unions and its combined conclusion. Ujima represents the first two days of Kwanzaa mixed with the 3 realms of life: mental, spiritual, and physical. You can have the best mental or spiritual intention but you must also work physically in order to manifest your desires into your life. That is the reason why we begin Ujima with hope, responsibility, cooperation, chores, progress, helping out the community, and building. Think about yourself and your environment then answer the following questions: What things do I need to improve within myself and my community?, How can I help my family, neighbor, or friend today?, How can I help my partner, friend, community, and/or parent, spiritually, mentally, or physically? How can I be more responsible? What projects can I work on? What helpful tips can I give out today? What chores do I need to complete? What should I be more mindful about? Do I need to work on being more positive? What symbols in the world am I receiving either mentally, spiritually, or physically? Am I being unfair in my community or leadership? What physical things can I do today to achieve my goals for myself and my community? For more ideas on what you can physically do for Ujima check out this following post: Self-care Tuesday activities.

I do not have a physical candle holder nor candles, therefore I drew 7 candles to replace the idea of physical candles because the intention of the drawn candles are just as important as the physical ones. The far left, red candle will be lit today to symbolize the struggles that our ancestors have experienced. Despite those hardships, our ancestors fought for independence and in return our freedom has been granted. As people of color in the 21st century, we have the ability to easily create businesses, go to restaurants without having rude words thrown into our ears because of our ethnicity, and can entertain many more endeavors without conflict. We must take advantage of our freedom if not for ourselves at least for our community and ancestors.
What does Kujichagulia represent?
On the 26 December the nguzo saba of the day was umoja, so I aimed to incorporate its energy into my daily activities. I also decided to go on a new adventure, so I left the house and when I arrived to my destination I saw a numerous amount of people communicating with one another to symbolize unity. In addition, I received a verbal confirmation to continue forward with my spirituality through numerology which was extremely helpful. For today the nguzo saba is Kujichagulia and this word represents taking control over your life without the influence of others. Unity was celebrated the day prior to remind us that society is needed but so is self-care. Therefore today’s focus should be independence, self-love, balancing unity and self-determination, respecting yourself, speaking up for yourself, understanding who is worth having in your life, understanding the concept of value, improving yourself, keeping your environment healthy, and striving to bring your uniqueness into the world. For the remainder of the day, I will entertain African art and self-care. The self-care activities will be based on the following post: Self-Care Monday activities

Today is 31 December 2021 and the 6th day of Kwanzaa. I will continue to celebrate Kwanzaa similar to last year by exploring and producing art and intention. I do not have a physical candle holder nor candles, therefore I drew 7 candles to replace the idea of physical candles because the intention of the drawn candles are just as important as the physical ones. Today we light the last red candle in the kinara to energize our spirits with determination and strength before the year goes out.
What does Kuumba represent?
Nia represents our purpose and thoughts for the future, so yesterday I spent the entire day planning my 2022 goals. For next year, I want to spend more time interacting with individuals who speak about positivity and growth. In addition, I want to focus on completing my goals because my needs are also important. Today's nguzo saba is Kuumba and this principle represents creativity. Begin to think about art as self expression, meaning that you can produce art by singing, dancing, rapping, communicating, playing sports, decorating, reorganizing, wearing clothes, painting your nails, etc. Kuumba is to remind us about the beauty and artistic expression that lives in all of us. Do not be afraid to express yourself because this world needs your ideas and art. For today, I will clean up around the house, remember the beautiful memories that I had during 2021, listen to my favorite 2021 songs, write down my goals for the future, cleanse my energy and environment, and accept all that has happened in 2021 so it does not leave trauma in my spirit. I decorated my environment with symbols: mazao, kinara, and bendera to represent Kwanzaa. I do not have a physical candle holder nor candles, therefore I drew 7 candles to replace the idea of physical candles because the intention of the drawn candles are just as important as the physical ones. Today we light the last green candle in the kinara to symbolize new beginnings, Earth, growth, renewal, hope, and peace.
What does Imani represent?
Yesterday I spent a portion of my night standing outside and absorbing the energy of nature's essence. My mind wandered from subject to subject until it halted around the thought of my studies. The thoughts of my studies intertwined with the thought of my grandmother due to her being a huge contributor to the result of my financial appeal. A few seconds later I received a text message that asked, "how is your grandmother doing." I chuckled, smiled, and lifted by head towards the heavens to give her my gratitude. In the 21st century, we have not been taught certain ancestral traditions like understanding the callings of our ancestors but it is not too late to learn. The symbols from our ancestors can be from regular conversations, our dreams and thoughts, animals, intuition, insects, and the television. Today's nguzo saba represents all of the previous 6 principles of Kwanzaa: unity, self-determination, collective work, extended family, purpose, and creativity. 1 January is the final day of Kwanzaa and the first day of a new beginning. If you wish to accomplish your goals then you must have Imani in your spirits throughout 2022. Today is the day that we drink kikombe cha umoja and you can either drink the kikombe cha umoja from a cup or a water bottle. Now, place your intentions in the kikombe cha umoja and if you are unsure about how to place intentions then think about your last birthday cake with candles. Before you blew out your candles, your environment allowed you to gather up your intention by referring to it as "making a wish." Once you set your intention(s), drink the water, and watch your dreams form into your reality, thanks to your ancestors. If you are celebrating with more than 1 person then each person can drink from the cup and if you are picky then get separate cups for everyone. This was a fantastic 2nd year Kwanzaa anniversary and I look forward to celebrating Kwanzaa 2022 with you all again. I wish you all a happy new year and many blessings.

Today is 30 December 2021 and the 5th day of Kwanzaa. I will continue to celebrate Kwanzaa similar to last year by exploring and producing art and intention. Today we light the furthest to the right green candle to remind ourselves to get back on track.
What does Nia represent?
I have tried to write about today's nguzo saba for the entire day but my energy is completely depleted. Despite this unexpected depletion, I will still speak about today's nguzo saba in a quick and untraditional manner. Yesterday, I left the house to accompany a member of the community; however, that individual was soaked in negative energy which resulted in making my spirit feel weak and fragile. Thankfully, my mind is still hooked on today's principle—purpose. Our energy is strong yet it can be easily manipulated due to outside influences. Our ancestors wants us to thrive in our community by redefining our idea of purpose so we can easily progress forward during the next chapter of our lives.
Release: What do you want to drop from your life that is no longer serving you a purpose?
Judgment, hate, jealousy, dependency, gossip, assumptions, negative thoughts, obsession over social media, negative competition, anger, revenge, bullying, and abusive leadership.

Ujamaa
Today is 29 December 2021 and the 4th day of Kwanzaa.

Things to remember:
Ujamaa- Extended family
Ujima- Collective work and responsibility
Kujichagulia- Self-determination
Kinara- Candle holder
Umoja- Unity
7 Nguzo saba- The 7 principles
Mazao- Crops
Bendera- Flag
Which candle is lit today?
I decorated my environment with symbols: mazao, kinara, and bendera to represent Kwanzaa. I do not have a physical candle holder nor candles, therefore I drew 7 candles to replace the idea of physical candles because the intention of the drawn candles are just as important as the physical ones. The second red candle located towards the far left of the kinara will be lit today to represent brotherhood and sisterhood. I want to eliminate the false narrative that black people were only known as being slaves because we were actually Kings and Queens. Many of us were rich, traded goods and art with different countries, and influenced the art world. One of the main reasons why our King and Queen representations are kept secret is due to haters and racism. Those individuals were and still are afraid of our power and elegance, so they have tried to separate our people and destroy our race but that has not happened because we are here to stay and flourish!
What does Ujamaa represent?
The previous nguzo saba was Ujima so we could properly focus our energies on mastering the mental, spiritual, and physical realms. If one of these realms are imbalanced then we would not be able to do anything in this world like being able to have our own thoughts, receiving symbols from our higher being(s), and having the ability to move our limbs. Last night, I had a dream that I attended a pep rally where I spoke to everyone who sat around me. The hosts of the event passed out containers filled with delicious food, however I noticed that I received a second plate which was unfair and against the rules. When I tried to give the second plate to the correct individual, the container fell on the floor which led to the juices inside of the container to appear everywhere, but despite this I cleaned the outer container and I gave the plate to the correct person. The meaning of that dream was to do the the right thing, to communicate with those who were around me, to be helpful, and to be aware of my surroundings. Today is the 4th day of Kwanzaa which also makes the meaning of the number 4 extremely important. This number represents our roots, community, and foundations. Ujamaa represents all of our Black and African people inside and outside of the home. This means that with our brothers and sisters we must make sure that we come together, support each other, maintain a healthy environment, be an act of service, heal, grow closer to our culture, and share our wealth with each other. If we do not help each other then a lot of our problems will be overlooked and our art would not be discovered. Remember that the materials in this world will not follow you to the mental nor the spiritual realms because it does not hold any value. Yesterday I separated myself from the community so I could work on self-care and because of that I have enough energy today to spread love and joy into the community.
