the fact that eric kripke isn't even christian really adds something to the way christianity is depicted on supernatural. because its really not about being christian at all, but about living in america, a country dominated by christianity, and having to decide for yourself how to handle that. faith is huge in supernatural, and the mythology of the show is very bible-centric, but notably, christ is never there. even sam, who starts out revering the angels, who once said he prays every night, doesn't actually call himself a christian or imply that he believes in jesus--the show is steeped in christianity and biblical lore and yet neither sam nor dean are christians. in fact, over and over again the church itself is depicted as a haunted house that sam and dean will only ever enter as strangers, as outsiders. priests, preachers, faith healers, chapels, crypts, etc. are all just iconography that create an intense sense of unease that sam and dean respond to instantly. as a jew, its very relatable. an essential part of living in america when you're not christian is that exact sense of unease, of knowing that the culture of your country has ensured that you'll get knocked over by christianity no matter where you go, that you'll see hundreds of people truly believing they're good people while doing awful things in the name of their god, and you have no choice but to confront that. kripke gets it
I am sooo sad that they stopped doing clever disguises for cases in later spn. Every day they’re regular civilians or feds. I need the priests and yoga instructors and psych ward patients again!!!!!!! I need them to be in situations!!!!! All of their cases are soooo boring and lame and contained where was the IMMERSION!! Where is the leadup to the monster and the twist and the detail and the creative insanity of it??? where is the PRESENCE!!!! Where are the stakes!!!!! Where are the left field episodes that intentionally feel out of place with the narrative and then directly tie into it later and leave the juiciest implications to be picked apart!!!!!! ? Where is the clashing of the normal world in such a funny way that they can bluntly tell the truth of their lives to be admitted to a ward. Where is the communicating something you don’t entirely remember through a silly game. Where are the lasting effects of what they go through!!! Where is the CINEMA.! If there is one thing I could ask for from the prequel it is this. . I need those beasts to be in actual situations again.
what I really love about sex and violence ep is that the siren curse can be interpreted in different ways and it will still make sense.
like in canon, I think it was mostly platonic (but still weird and we love that). dean wanted more than anything to get his relationship back to normal with sam. he wanted sam to be his little brother again. so their platonic brotherly love surpasses any sexual/romantic/erotic desire or attraction because it is the most important thing to them.
at the same time, it fits perfectly into the wincest context - dean is most attracted to sam, and sam is most attracted to dean. "It wasn't some bitch in a g-string. It was you".
i dont have the autism that makes you a math genius but i do have the autism where you could show me a screencap of any episode of kripke era supernatural and i could tell you not only what season and episode its from but also whether or not it was shot on film
I love you grainy film. I love you leather jacket. I love you bad lighting. I love you Sam’s bangs. I love you amulet. I love you unconnected motw. I love you Dean’s dumb smirk. I love you graphic tees. I love you religious symbolism. I love you motels. I love you random jewelry. I love you psychic powers. I love you fearing your own nature. I love you flip phones. I love you “us against the world” mentality. I love you—
traceover of this meme that i made last year during an insane art rut to try getting on my art-feet again, lol. dont think i ever posted this one either so here it is!
I know not everyone has access to the script, but it IS on the Superwiki and this part, in particular, is pointed:
Come oooonnnnn, y'all. They were in the same Heaven, just different parts. They're frickin' soulmates. BUT. How you wanna parse this into some sort of love—eros, philia, pragma, qp—is entirely up to you.
that doctor who post looked fun but I haven’t seen it so!!! early seasons spn edition!!!
again this isn’t a favorite from these seasons, but the best episode to show someone who has no context to get them interested, so these are pretty plot-light
might do another poll with post s5 eps if anyone wants it!
Supernatural pre Season 6 is like, fine televison. Like not Thee Best Television, but decent. Like imagine you're driving and you're tired. And the only place open is an ok ish diner where the counter tops are sticky. And like, the burger you order is too greasy and overdone and the fries are cold. But the milkshake is pretty good and the waitress doesn't charge you for it.
And everything past 5 is like, imagine that same scenario but a rat crawls onto your plate and shoots you with a gun.
