What if Anime Characters (Especially Japanese) have Chinese, Korean, and English names - Sarazanmai ver.

Those kanji names can be translated into Hanzi (Chinese) and Hangeul (Korean) based on en.wiktionary.org

1. Kazuki Yasaka (矢逆一稀)

Etymology: Kazuki's Kanji name (一稀) = 一 means "one"; 稀 means "rare/sparse/unique/thin" * Chinese Name: 矢逆一稀 (Shǐnì Yīxī) → If he has a Chinese name, I'll name him 石一稀 (Shí Yīxī). * Korean Name: 시역일희 (Shiyeok Ilhee) → If he has a Korean name, I'll name him 석일희 (Seok Ilhee). Such a rare Korean surname due to match his Chinese/Hanja name) * English Name: Based on one of his kanji names meaning, I'll name him Ace because Ace in Latin word means "one" (just like Kazu "一") or "unity". Etymology: Enta's Kanji name (陣内燕太) = 燕 means "Swallow"; 太 means "great" * Chinese Name: 阵内燕太 (Zhènnèi Yàntài) → If he has a Chinese name, I'll name him 陈燕太 (Chén Yàntài) * Korean Name: 진내 연태 (Jinnae Yeontae) → If he has a Korean name, I'll name him 진연태 (Jin Yeontae) * English Name: Based on one of his kanji names, I'll name him Howin in Chinese origin which means "a loyal swallow". 5. Mabu Akutsu (阿久津真武)

Mabu's Kanji name (真武) = 真 means "true, real"; 武 means "samurai, warrior, soldier" * Chinese Name: 阿久津真武 (Ājiǔjīn Zhēnwǔ) → If he has a Chinese name, I'll name him 金真武 (Jīn Zhēnwǔ) * Korean Name: 아자진 진무 (Ajajin Jinmu) → If he has a Korean name, I'll name him 김진무 (Kim Jinmu) (Same case as Kazuki's, but this time, Kim 김 is the most common Korean surname). * English Name: Based on one of his kanji names, I'll name him Miles because in Latin origin it means "soldier" but in English origin means "merciful". So, his English name is Miles Akutsu (Coincidentally, his 1st letter name is the same "M" as Mabu).

Sara doesn't have Kanji name because her name is in Katakana name. But, Sara (サラ/皿) means "dish". * Chinese Name: 吾妻沙罗 (Wúqī Shāluó) → If she has a Chinese name, I'll name her 吴沙罗 (Wú Shāluó) * Korean Name: 오처사라 (Ocheo Sara) → If she has a Korean name, I'll name her 오사라 (Oh Sara) * English Name: Don't ask it, it's definitely Sara Azuma. It's already English name.

7. Chikai Kuji (久慈誓)

Chikai's Kanji name (誓) = 誓 means "oath/vow" * Chinese Name: 久慈誓 (Jiǔcí Shì) → If he has a Chinese name, I'll name him 邱誓 (Qīu Shì) * Korean Name: 구자 서 (Kuja Seo) → If he has a Korean name, I'll name him 구서 (Goo Seo). * English Name: Based on his kanji name meaning, I'll name him Arlan. Update on the Squirrel and Hedgehog AUs from March

Geumsaegi AU:

Plans for this are coming along nicely for the most part. I plan to have parts of the war spill into and affect other countries, so I might have to look into creating AU nations surrounding Flower Hill or on the other side of the ocean. Honestly, I might create a faction with Joo Ho Jo from the current AU, explained below. Or I might keep OCs to a minimum in this one.

I had somehow completely forgotten that even Commander Seungnyangi plotted against Dr. Huinjogjebi to steal his research and take over the army by attempting to manipulate Geumsaegi, so that actually changes a few things.

Absolutely going to be the funny guy here and find a way to force Geumsaegi and Mulmangcho to reluctantly work together for a few chapters, at least to survive some dangerous situations. Does not stop them from hating each other though, could be a nice dynamic.

Kidnapped Scientists AU

Nunsongi is definitely going to be the name of the military research scientist squirrel. But the name Uisa still means 'doctor,' so Uisa Darami can still be in use as a forced pen name on their publicized research. I see them as a relatively young scientist who was extremely good at their job and became famous for it in the foreign university. Their fame follows them when they graduate and return to Flower Hill, even though they try to keep it low key.

She tries her best to stay loyal, but over a period of time with no rescue in sight, allows herself to understand that she can further her research by complying with some demands, and not all of the tasks and research topics will harm Flower Hill directly. Maybe even rise in the ranks and sabotage the army.

Jilmunja is still the name of the weasel interrogator/warden/head guard. I know it is also the name of a minor character hedgehog in my current AU, but who says I can't reuse some names for vastly different characters?

Since the idea for the prisoners in this cell block is that they need to be kept alive, he is firm but knows how to wear them down slowly over a long period of time (months to years) into compliance, using a system of rewards (research material, extra food, allowed to see outside, online schooling) and punishments (threats to other prisoners, isolation, etc.). Also very protective of them, and more of an affably evil vibe.

His idea is that eventually, overall, he will convince all the prisoners to work for the Weasel Army, allowing for them to concede ideas slowly. He has time. Although he also deals with other prisoners in different cell blocks, where information is needed quickly. He can be fast and far more brutal, there.

The civilian hostages are mainly used to keep the important prisoners in line, but they can still be used by the Weasel Army. The online school programs from foreign universities he permits are used as a compliance tool with the idea that the students might use what they learn for the Weasel Army someday.

The young adult hedgehog on his first day of conscription (assuming 17/18 years old) who opened a window at the wrong time and was abducted alongside the older hedgehog will be named Wonsi (Farsighted). The Weasel Army recognizes that he is from a long line of excellent to legendary snipers, so he is a good 'acquisition.' No one knows that he is essentially legally blind and very colorblind, least of all Wonsi.

Wonsi is absolutely gung-ho about being a loyal Flower Hill soldier, and immediately assumes that he is going to be killed or should die to protect Flower Hill, but is confused about himself finding some joy in the online schooling system.

I'm still a little stuck since the vast majority of the characters in Squirrel and Hedgehog are just called by their rank and species name, if not just their species. Very few have given names unless it is of a big identifying feature that everyone can see (Nunsongi being born during a snowstorm instead of spring giving an out of season birth date unlike other squirrels, Aekku having one eye, Oegwipali having one ear). I would like to be creative, but I also know it would be more likely for the military strategist hedgehog to just be called Strategist Goseumdochi. I could call him Jeonlyagga (Strategist) or Him (strength, will) if I wanted to I guess.

I've recently begun seeing Strategist Goseumdochi as an older hedgehog. Where Nunsongi is young, he is older and established, with a long record of successes, which is why the Weasel Army wanted him. Fiercely loyal to Flower Hill with an iron will, but even he knows that eventually even he can be worn down over time to give some information or assistance, even if the weasels are not physically hurting him directly.

Hagsaengi, I've decided to split him into two separate characters, maybe young teenagers.

The squirrel students are named Minji (sharp intellect), and the other Injae (Talented and wise scholar). Both are extremely intelligent prodigies who happened to be in the same building Nunsongi was abducted in, so they are a bonus to the Weasel Army. I'm thinking on if I want them to be twins, or academic rivals from different families that the weasels and mice would try to pit against each other.

The twins idea could pull a bunch of scenes of the two finding out the other is alive, resulting in emotional plotlines where separating the two is a punishment to keep them in line. The rival idea could pull that they are pretending to hate each other in front of the Weasel Army, but they wouldn't even think to betray Flower Hill, and may be using the fighting to make plans to escape or sabotage behind the scenes. Rival families could also introduce a secret childhood friends plotline.

I'm still working on how many other hostages there are. I think I can easily name the duck Murori (no relation) and the rabbit Tokki, and have an array of other prisoners that are needed alive for a time to come in and out.

Everyone's kidnapping is done or orchestrated by a mouse with gold earrings named Geumbanji (Gold Rings), who is a a spy leading a special unit to help carry out abductions, who took the time to gain most of the victims' trust over a period of time before abducting them.

I just remembered the other day that Nanbaka exists, but the vibes are far different since the prisoners in that show actually want to be there. I probably won't be making Skippy's List jokes, though, since there is not much I could turn into a reasonable story with this or any of the AUs.

White Ermine AU:

The white ermine nurse's name is Nurse Eomin. She refuses to act flirty and sexy with the troops like the other nurses and female servants, but the Weasel Army and Wolf Unit soldiers think it is funny that the white one is so cold hearted and call her Yepa, which translates into 'Winter Princess' or 'Ice Queen' in Korean. Interesting enough, it is actually a Native American term that was taken up into Korean, but it could fit with what I have planned since they are foreign invaders coming to steal things.

Not sure if that is culturally insensitive, though, so I could use Seoli or Chadonyeo (slang for cold hearted yet intelligent girl from a big city) instead.

She might appear cold, but she is easily frightened at her situation deep within.

Ermines (also called stoats) are not native to Korea, but are native to Russia, China, and Japan, which can help hide the fact that she is actually from Flower Hill.

I saw in a recent post that there is a definite lack of crow OCs. I know I made a bunch of White-Naped Crane OCs since they live in the Korean demilitarized zone in real life, but it is not the same. It could be interesting to create a few crow characters for this AU. Maybe have one of them secretly be a Flower Hill duck.

Cage of Eden AU:

I am thinking of at least having two characters named Gasi (Thorn) and Baneul (Needle). A squirrel and a hedgehog who are great friends, and they joke about their names. Most of the characters in this AU are going to be named their occupations since they are active soldiers.

Going to have the Takashi Nishikiori inspired character as a White Naped-Crane though.

I don't think I can put any crow OCs in this one, since the ability to scout from the air would solve most plots before they began, and I really want to have fun with the Sturgeons and Dr. Huinjogjebi on this one.

Still going to mix canon characters and OCs from other stories into this one.

Other:

Joo Ho Jo was supposed to be a one off joke character in Chapter 20 of the Lily Bell in the Thorn Thicket AU. But honestly? A weasel who is part of a royal/upper class family, until they were deposed by the commoners a few generations ago, and is extremely angry about it and plans revenge, can make for some interesting or amazing plot ideas. Might as well work with the names Paola, Bolasaeg, Nogsaeg, and Holli as well at some point in the future, although drop the parody elements.

Jinro still just chilling like Ginko from Mushishi, except he's being hunted like Super Doctor K but for his cooking skills.

It turns out tufted ground squirrels are rumored to slaughter deer in localized folklore? So a hyena having one as a bodyguard could be fun.

I'd like to have an actual romance between a hedgehog and a wolf or hyena where the hedgehog is the dominant one in the relationship, but that might be a oneshot where the canine is accused of trafficking the hedgehog through Flower Hill, when the couple is genuinely there for innocent reasons.

Haven't worked on the Hyena, Nope, or Mistaken Identity AUs in a while. Otherwise doing some research on Nuke EMP resistant vehicles and if they can be mixed with a TIV modified truck as a tank, because honestly they look cool and can come in handy for some plot or story ideas.

You mean generational names?

Say... the generational name of Tae...

So the brother is name Tae Gyeon the younger brother's, etc. The cousin.

It depends on the age of the characters and how much people want to adhere to it. As I said, this is why one asks a Korean and then we'd go over, where is this character located, what time period, what is their family's background, etc. Then the Korean would give you a list of factors, such as the Jokbo.

There are generational names in Nine, Nine Times Time Travel. The generational name is in the second, not first position.

In addition, it is a tad confusing some some people to have everyone named with Eun [] and [] Yoon, etc. So dramas are less likely to do it, though it does show up on occasion. It also fell out of favor in the last 20 years, in general, but you'll still find it in the countryside.

Eun in the first position is rather common as a generational name for mostly women, though sometimes shows with men. (Some hanja are seen as feminine, so better to find which one)

There are less jokbo rules about generational names with women. Most of those are for the men. But you can often tell which generation someone else who has the same generational name if you run into someone of the same clan for men and sometimes women.

One of my profs from a very small clan said that his clan was so small that he would ban his children from marrying the same clan and everyone in the clan could tell which generation they were from by their generational names. But you could also invent a very traditional small clan, and most Koreans wouldn't bat an eyelash, as long as you followed the basics of clan declination and make sure really, that the clanship does not exist.

So how traditional is your family? How many gens in Seoul, or not Seoul are they? Do they still follow clanship rules or did they convert to those new fangled pure Korean names? How old are the people?

You'd have to know that... BTW, jokbo are online–I found mine. They list the generational names people are supposed to follow. (Though Kdramas rarely follow those)

Korean Rock Cont.

As a disclaimer, I don't know Korean. I don't know much about Korea. I'm not some Koreaboo who's thirsting for KDA or BTS. My highest level of interaction with Korean is workes like Train to Busan 1(/2), #Alive, and All of Us Are Dead... And judicious googling.

Name:

Far as I can tell, name meanings don't much matter in Black Lagoon. Okajima Rokuro doesn't refer to some hidden depths. It's just a reasonably common name that isn't, like, the Japanese equivalent of Tom, Dick, or Harry.

That said, Okajima can be read as Island Mountain. I'm going with Choi (which apparently means something about owning land near mountains), but I could also go with Jeup, which is apparently a name in NK referring to Koreans that marry Japanese (and could be used to explain away Rock knowing Japanese and knowing a decent amount about the Yakuza).

Rather than trying to learn what each of the Hanja characters means and trying to find a really meaningful name that works to mean Green Son, like Rokuro does, I'm going to be lazy and use a popular name from the 70's, and give Rock two brothers to use the Generational Name aspect of Korean conventions. Specifically, Rock's name is now Sung-Hoon, his older brother is Sang-Hoon, and he has a younger brother named Ji-Hoon.

And, since his name's not Rokuro, so Revy can't shorten it to Rock, and I'm not one to keep details the same between AUs when it doesn't make sense, his new nickname's Koi. Because he bites his tongue when introducing himself, and this way people can make jokes about shooting fish in a barrel and I can allude to the Dragon to Koi pipeline in mythology.

Family & History:

Choi Sung-Hoon is born in August 1970 in Busan. His grandfather tells him war stories, and his uncle and grandfather tell him exaggerated stories about being police officers.

His older brother goes to join the police like his uncle and grandfather. Koi follows his father into business. His younger brother stays with the military after his required service is up.

He grows up idolizing the "action-packed" lives his extended family leads, but he's not quite willing to put himself into that kind of situation without it being out of his control. Because of this, he winds up feeling jealous of his brothers and develops adrenaline-junky habits.

The most exciting time of his life - before joining Lagoon Company - is serving as a border guard during his required service. He even got to be involved in a lowkey border dispute - arguably an international incident that threatened to restart conflicts - during a defection. During this, he sees that he wings one of the enemy, and presumes it leads to the other man's death. He's correct.

It's one of the moments he relies on to keep sane during the drudgery of office work. It's one of his proudest memories.

Then, in 1995, while working for either Hanjin, HMM, or - for some reason - still Asahi, the events of Black Lagoon begin.

Guns and Excitement:

Koi's a bit of a daydreamer when he doesn't have something to focus on. He's also a big fan of Westerns, Noire, and Buddy Cop films. He craves but is terrified of the excitement in his daily life. One of the reasons he takes on some of the more... hasty or idiotic actions in his life is to lowkey chase the thrills he sees Revy regularly take part in.

One of the most apparent representations of this particular interest is his mild obsession with the primary firearm of the Korean police force at the time, the S&W Model 19. He even buys one in an omake-style "after credits scene" for the arc Calm Down, Two Men, where Revy walks in on him posing with it.

Revy showing him the finer points of gunslinging is a consistent aspect of background action. It's a source of noodle incidents and a diegetic explanation for why Rock is able to shoot semi-decently when it finally comes up, and why he's able to keep his cool more and more as the series progresses.

Like Fish Shooting Out of a Barrel:

As to when Rock is shown actively participating in the action... I'm reticent to provide a fine point on this. I think there are a number of good moments that could be used for the overall timeline we're presented with.

Personally, though, I might go with the Dance of Death Arc, to give weight to the people around Koi's feelings that he's being corrupted by his stay in Roanapur. Or maybe Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise, if Koi's still contracted for that job.

It could work for Wire Red Wild Card, too. Have him give the finishing blow to one of the brothers.

whatever the case, I think it's important to show his competence with firearms in this AU. Even if it's only him being shown to be doing maintenance on the various, more generic weapons available to Lagoon company. Even if it's as a final act for the series...

I also wanna say that I really liked Jyungreok's (Let me know if I spelled that wrong) energy too when he joined, he was absolutely hilarious. Though he hasn't been on as much to see. Same with Acau and Kong (Again, let me know if I'm spelling these wrong)

It's just nice to see this kind of positivity again and remember the great things that this server can bring to people all around the world. I'm really excited to see more of them once the server gets back up and running at 100% again (I also cannot WAIT to see how YD and Kong interact with Chunsik)

What if Anime Characters (Especially Japanese) have Chinese, Korean, and English names – Owari no Seraph/Seraph of the End ver. (Part 2)

Those kanji names can be translated into Hanzi (Chinese) and Hangeul (Korean) based on en.wiktionary.org

Remember, this is only for Japanese characters, not Western (like Vampires) characters. Also, their Chinese will be written with Chinese Simplified instead of Chinese Traditional to make it sound like in Mainland China.

Etymology: Tomoe’s Kanji name (巴) = 与 (Yo) means "Turning" or "Circular", a circular design resembling swirling water, a comma or an archer's bow, the comma-shaped design used in Japanese art and architecture.

Chinese Name: 早乙女巴 (Zǎoyǐnǚ Bā) → If she has a Chinese name, I'll name her 赵女巴 (Zhào Nǚbā) since there is no meaning of 巴 (Bā), so I use Saotome’s last Kanji word name, 女 (me) as her given name alongside 巴 (Bā) to be 女巴 (Nǚbā).

English Name: Since I can’t find the meaning name of her kanji name (even though there is no meaning of it actually), I’ll name her Tamara. Tamara is a feminine Arabic name meaning “date palm” or “date.” Derived from the Biblical name Tamar meaning “date” or “palm tree,” this sweet moniker is symbolic of the beauty and fruitfulness associated with this tree. Also, I want to match her nickname English name Tammy with Yoichi’s, Timmy, since I have a church friend whose name is Tamara with her younger brother whose name is Timothy too. With so, her English name is Tamara Saotome (Tammy).

How do you figure out what Chinese element the hanja corresponds? You mentioned in a post that factored in the choosing of your name. Like, how does Yoon = water?

For this you need to know some Chinese basics. My own name: 김윤미 Kim Yoonmi (Surname first, of course).

金

So, the first is gold. Gold is the "Metal" Element. This can show up in other hanja. Say for silver, etc. This, BTW, is learned in elementary school for Koreans, though some of the gens, including my gen can't remember some of the basics. This one is well known. You need to know radicals.

This is for Japanese, but it applies similarly to Sino-Chinese characters and Korean.

So, you can see the dominant element for the first character of the name is "Metal" (Gold in a literal sense).

潤- This one has "water" because the first radical is water:

海 See, here? The first part of this, sea, is water. (BTW, also an elementary school hanja for Koreans, also Chinese and Japanese the first time they learn hanzi and kanji respectively).

Those three strokes also shows up in other characters frequently. So if you were to break it down: 海

門 -Gate. 王 -King

You might be lookig at "King" and thinking it's in 金

But then you don't know the radicals well enough yet, because 金 actually represents, ground that has been covered by a little mound and gold that's been buried in it. (You really do need to know your hanzi).

But the radicals for the second character are water, Gate, and King. Only water is an element. Therefore the second element is water.

美

is made up of the radicals for sheep and big. Some Koreans don't know this... and just see it as a unified character. *cough* Appa didn't know this. But I learned some Japanese and Chinese...

Sheep. (top one)

大 (big, bottom one)

There are no elements in this.

Animal isn't an element. And Big isn't an element. So you're left with the birth chart, gold (Metal), and water as the elements.

The birth cart is fire, predominantly. (I looked it up).

This way of making names sometimes is not done anymore–such as the 2000's forwards. But some people in the countryside like to do it this way and will still debate it by bringing it to experts.

But if you read the argument... this is why you bring your character naming to a Korean. Or you can use my name generator and check it against a Korean/learn some Chinese astrology.

I've learned Chinese astrology–there are online resources for that, though I can't do the calculations. And if you learn the basic radicals for the five elements, you should be able to pick them out of names as well.
