What is Mika’s Role in the Story?
So this is something I’ve seen pop up a lot in posts about OnS (probably half of which are anti posts of sorts, but this isn’t a post to callout or insult anyone). Ironically, I haven’t seen anyone actually give a good reason for Mika’s purpose in the story right now since his story is..pretty much going nowhere. Though the same could be said for many other characters as well, but Mika gets a lot of special attention. Though a lot of people still love Mika regardless of what respect or disrespect canon gives him.
I’ve reflected on his character myself because I’ve had the same question. Admittedly, those people are kinda right: Similarly to a handful of other characters, what the heck is the point of keeping Mika around besides minor roles? After some thinking, I figured it out. He is Yuu’s foil. I’m not going to say whether or not he’s been a well written one or not, but I’ll tell you the reasons I came to this conclusion.
1. There are some super basic contrasts between them, like their physical appearances. Yuu has green eyes and [now] Mika has red [which are complimentary colors, opposite on the color wheel]. Yuu has black/dark hair and Mika has blond/light hair. This is more widespread over characters, but Yuu wears a black uniform and Mika wears a white uniform. This is probably the most direct form to show how they seem to represent a sort of Yin and Yang. I’m pretty sure a lot of people have noticed these contrasts as well.
2. To a simple degree, you could say there’s a vampire / human distinction made for them. However, on another layer of that, you could say it’s Mika’s refusal to become a “monster” while Yuu will willingly become one in order to do what he feel he needs to. (If Mika would drink blood more regularly, he probably could be a decent bit stronger than he is now.) On top of that, Yuu has been associated with demons/Hell frequently whereas Mika has some association with angels/Heaven.
3. Mika is clinging to his past, and focuses solely on saving Yuu because of their tragedy. Yuu is using that past to move himself forward and save Mika and the rest of his family.
4. While Mika is slowly losing all of his emotions (save for his fondness of Yuu), Yuu has been getting more “emotional” by the chapter, specifically, greedier to save everyone no matter the cost. (There have been a good handful of times people have mention Yuu’s greed becoming worse, and his greed ties into his apparent stupidity.)
4a. Leading off of 4 and, and 3 tbh, Mika has poured all his love and devotion into Yuu while Yuu seems to feel no romantic love towards anyone, not even love for himself. We know Yuu and Mika have a close friendship, and we know Yuu cares about his friends, but he doesn’t seem to be attracted to any of them unlike how his slow-building harem thinks of him, lol.
5. This is a bit of an…outdated contrast? Mika willing to let the world fall to ruin while Yuu wanted to save it and everyone in it. However, it seems now that Yuu would be perfectly willing to sacrifice the world if it meant saving his family, probably more in favor of comparing Yuu and Ashera. You could say that Mika wanting to stop him is indirectly his desire to spare the rest of the world ending, but it’s not exactly something he outright cares about.
6. While Yuu’s mentor figure (Guren) betrayed him (even though he was possessed, but specifics aside), Mika’s mentor figure (Krul) tried to save him. You could honestly say that their roles in this are still ongoing to some degree.
7. This might be a bit of my own interpretation, but while Yuu is rambunctious and does what he wants, Mika is more obedient and does as he is told. Yuu doesn’t exactly think ahead before acting while Mika somewhat will plan out his actions before enacting them. Further into that, Yuu is full of energy, friendly, and open while Mika is more to himself, closed-off, and untrusting of others. (Though of course, that has to do a lot with their upbringings within the JIDA capitol and with the vampire capitol.)
That’s all I can remember at the moment, but the whole point of this is: I believe Mika’s purpose right now is to show how Yuu is changing, and how he’s changed. Without bringing ships into the discussion, the two seem to have a sort of Yin and Yang role within the story, which is why it wouldn’t necessarily be the same story without Mika. Despite how little he seems to be doing and developing as each chapter goes by, there is no one else in the story that can fulfill the same level of foil that Mika can.

I don’t know if this seemingly final Mikayuu WIP can be reblogged on @mikayuuweek or not . But I have decided to reupload it here with approriate prompts tagged along.
At least for so much love and efforts plus memories I poured wirh Mikayuu for 7 or 8 years or so is compiled here.
Day 1: Prehistoric Times —Stargazing
Way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth , Mika and Yuu were not human . Everytime they appear, everything is brought to live and stars ✨ shining everywhere. What could they be ?
Day 2: Ancient Greece feat Day 3: Medieval AU
So it turned out that they are Mermen Sirens in which Mika was the omnipotent God of Ocean / Poseidon/ Neptune while Yuu was siren of another tribe/ level / low class that didn't match to be Mika’s Goddess. Yuu lost his voice just to be with Mika . They fell in love desperately. After all the vicissitude , they are together, but became humans. Yuu got back his voice. Mika was no longer a God. The story went on up to the imagination of eveyone.
Day 4: Walk in Nature
Well, in my art piece, they ( Pochacco Yuu and Cinnamon Mika )fly in the sky and climb in the tree , Mikayuu a humans walk and dance in the nature.... And Mika and Yuu as magical flying mermen swim and fly in the sea the ocean the forest ....the nature...
Day 8: Happy Birthday, Yuu-chan!
You and me , we are still hurt, but together, the pain is taken cared of , the sorrow decline.... You deserve peace and happiness . Wish you all the bestest of best
