How do you feel so far about Mahoyo ? And what do you think of its main trio ?

I'll skip to the second question because answering that automatically answers the first. I also try to refrain from including my theories for the following two Mahoyo games since the ask says "so far".

Aoko

The young Aoko is immediately intriguing because she's SO MUCH different from her adult self as we see in Tsukihime and Melty. Her responsible core and penchant for destruction are still the same, but the teen's default expression being a grumpy face instead of the adult's smile is something that speaks volumes about the intensity of the upcoming sequel on her emotional state. The transition from the constrainingly strict school president and mage-in-training to the free-spirited magician vagabond goes beyond the level of growing confident and experienced. It feels more like Aoko was freed from a burden. She broke out of her chains somewhere probably in the third game.

Aoko's best scene is when she's bedridden and explains the worldview that defines her. The young Aoko is a coward who can't stand the thought of disappointing someone. She can't run away from expectations while someone's watching. And there is always someone watching: herself. Aoko lived an unnecessarily harsh life because she forced herself to live up to her own standards, and this forms a stark contrast with how her adult self is so seemingly natural and comfortable with being Aozaki Aoko. It's like she found the version of herself she can never be disappointed with.

Anyways, Aoko's main focus in this one is the conflict against Touko. This clash is the most natural and logical culmination of the persons Aoko and Touko used to be. And honestly, I don't think that's a good thing. Aoko vs Touko just feels too mandated for tastes. There's no emotional depth to it. Aoko is fighting not because she holds any animosity towards her sister but because this kind of mage conflict is customary and she's only a mage because she can't betray expectations. Touko is not fighting not because she's violently envious of Aoko or pissed at her efforts being discarded (she is furious about it, don't get me wrong, but she is mature enough to direct her rage exclusively at her grandfather) but because a mage must seek the Fount and she knows an easy method. It's an idiotic conflict that Tsuki's Aoko and KnK's Touko would never waste their time with.

Disclaimer: My not liking the thing doesn't mean I believe Nasu failed in what he was trying to accomplish. Aoko vs Touko being so procedural is completely intentional. The game has half of a dozen scenes of Soujuurou asking a question about personal reasons, Aoko instead giving an answer about mage tradition, and Soujuurou reacting with an "I'm not sure if it needs to be like this". Even when confronting Grandpa Aozaki, he spells out that the battle was the culmination of then-central elements of both of their characters. It's meaningful and true to the themes upheld by the characters, but that doesn't make it engaging.

Alice

The girl desperately needs those sequels. Seriously.

Mahoyo 1 is roughly split into three arcs. Arc 1 where the goal is to find and kill the witness, Arc 2 where the goal is to convince Alice to spare Soujuurou, and Arc 3 where the goal is to beat Touko. Alice is only there as Beo's jobber in Arc 3, so let's focus on the first two.

Arc 1 Alice is the mage's mage. Throughout its multiple stories, Type-Moon built a solid image of what the standard mage should be like, with all mage characters being defined by how deviate from the standard due to their inescapable human nature, but until the Flat Snark fight, we only see Alice performing the standard with perfection. Which is important to Aoko's arc since Alice serves as Aoko's mage mentor and role model, but doesn't give her much of an identity of her own.

Arc 2 is the one focused on characterizing Alice by challenging Soujuurou to understand her. That arguably didn't happen. Soujuurou simply stumbled on the right answer by saying has a right to hate him.

Alice has issues. Losing her parents and her British home did a number on her. She's not explosive, but is possessive and petty. But the first game makes her too good at hiding her damage. The closest thing she has to a moment of emotional catharsis is the aquarium scene: cryptic words said in a neutral tone.

A big aggravating factor for me is that we know from an in-script to Nasu's proofreader that Soujuurou caught Alice's heart because his "you have a right to hate me" was the same thing her dad said when abandoning her, and how the scene exploring Alice's nostalgia for England went unused in the game. I don't mind Alice being all unanswered questions for game 1 out of 3, but Nasu demonstrably also removed all the hooks that were supposed to make me care about the questions. There's no left in the game proper at this point. Zero reasons to be interested in Alice.

Soujuurou

I don't have much to say about Soujuurou, especially without getting into speculation about his future, but the short of it is that he is perfect. I'm in awe at the versatility of a man who isn't used to civilization. He's Mahoyo's best when it comes to comedy because his not knowing basic things can lead to all sorts of funny misunderstandings. He's Mahoyo's best when it comes to serious discussion because his not having basic things internalized can lead to him asking the sharpest and most unexpected questions about things that could be better but aren't because of elements we're grown to take for granted. Soujuurou's commentary never fails to be impactful because he always shows the lack of logic in what civilization decided to call "natural". His character archetype tends to focus on the angle of a "human with the perspective of a wild beast", but Soujuurou feels a lot more insightful than the typical feral character because he has both perspectives and navigates through a comparison of both worldviews to decide what makes the most sense.

Headcannons for Morgan, Sith, Melusine and Barghest with a depressed Master, how would they react to this and how would they help him.(Oh and one question, apart from Fate, would you make commissions related to other Type-Moon franchises? (Tsuhikime, Mahoyo and Knk) because I'm interested in ordering something related to Shiki (R), Arcueid and Aoko, Thanks)

(I will take literally any excuse to write for the Fae, especially Barghest and Baobhan Sith, and sorry that it took so long to get this back to you, I was trying to decide if I should go off my own experiences with Depression or if I should base it around a more… I dunno generalized(?) version of it, oh and to answer your question, I’d be more than open to writing for other Type Moon franchises! Also I couldn't find any good images for everyone sorry!)

Morgan Le Fay

Morgan Le Fay, the queen of all Fae-kind is many things.

A woman who provides the image of someone who is unshakeable and unbreaking.

A woman who has to do so, because that is what is expected of a monarch.

A woman who takes everything vulnerable about her and locks it away from even those closest to her.

Then you called her forward.

Someone who could manage to slip into the box where she keeps her weakness, wounds, and insecurities hidden.

Someone who could see past the masks she wears.

Someone who can hold her and say “It’s okay, it’ll all be okay.” and she’ll believe it.

But one day, she noticed something different about you.

How there was a lack of… fire in your eye.

How you spent more and more time alone, and what time you didn’t spend alone was spent almost entirely with her.

How you lacked energy.

How you seemed subdued.

How you tried to avoid people.

And one day.

How you just broke down as you were sitting down and doing nothing.

In that moment, all of her composure, all of her masks broke like glass.

And not knowing what else to do, she did what you would do when she would do the same.

She was crying while doing so, she was crying as she held you and told you “It’s okay, It’ll all be okay.”

And despite how her words lacked almost all of her usual power behind them, you believed her.

Because Morgan Le Fay is many things.

Your Queen.

Your servant.

The woman who loves you.

The woman you fell in love with.

And the woman who will do anything to repay the kindness you offered to her when you slipped past her guard and into her heart.

Just so she can continue to see your smile.

Baobhan Sith

Baobhan Sith is the most stubborn person you will ever meet.

In a way that’s part of her charm.

It’s also one of the worst things about her.

She will never admit when she needs help.

No matter how heavy the pressure placed upon her is.

No matter how much strain is placed on her.

She is the future queen after all, she has to be strong.

But her refusal to let anyone in will come back to bite her.

Or it would’ve if someone just as stubborn as her didn’t summon her one day and decide to break through her shell.

Needless to say it took quite a while to get through to her.

But when you did, Baobhan found the world was a much easier place to live in.

Having someone she can trust with everything.

It was liberating to her, not having to hold everything in.

So when she started to notice you holding things in from her she would not stand for it.

She forced her way in, just like you did for her.

Regardless of what you said to her she knew what was lies and what was truth.

And until you and her both left everything bare for each other to see.

She wouldn’t stop.

Melusine

Melusine is a loner.

She never really vibed with others.

Always on a slightly off wavelength to everyone else.

Perhaps it was because she was a dragon.

Or maybe it was just how she was.

But to connect with another, that was something Melusine desired more than anything.

To have someone willingly share their warmth.

To have a partner who would listen as she gushed about the things she loved, the things she hated, everything.

To have a partner she would listen to as they gushed about the things they loved, the things they hated, everything.

But a desire was all it was.

At least until she met you.

Because when she met you, got to know you, got to see what made you tick.

She knew she had found the partner in crime she had been looking for.

And she also knows when something is wrong with her partner.

Barghest

Barghest is someone who fears getting close to people.

It is something that she has spent her entire life as a Fae Knight avoiding.

Despite her inherent desire to have a group she can lean on and a group who can lean on her.

Eventually she learned to allow the other knights in to a degree but not in the same way she craved to do so with another.

To have a home in someone’s heart and to give someone a home in her heart.

To have someone who she can cook for and to have someone who will cook for her.

To have someone who she can care for and to have someone who can care for her.

It was a hopless dream for a knight like her to have, but still it was a dream she cherished.

Yet one day by sheer luck she happened to meet a certain someone who managed to grab her attention.

You.

You were someone quite interesting to Barghest.

And eventually that interest turned to something more.

To something where she wanted to share in her dream with you.

To something where she wanted to share her heart with you.

And when your heart aches, when you are shaken and the darkness of the world begins to crush you.

Know that you will always have not only one of the Fae Knights, not just a member of the Fang Clan, but someone who you share your heart with and someone you can lean upon no matter what.

Oh and if you even try to think of standing alone, know that Barghest will refuse to allow that to happen.

It is in her nature after all.

YES! This is based off an old interview with Joe Keery, but tomato soup and a grilled cheese. This is something he will eat more when he’s at the tail end of an illness, when he’s getting his appetite back and is feeling more like himself. It’s one of the signs that he’s on the mend.

Build Up Episode 2: 숨 (Breath)

Welcome back to another recap of MNET’s Build Up. In the last one, we covered Something Like That, and I got myself a new bias! In this one, we’ll be taking a look at The Hardest Song on the Show (along with all the other songs), 숨/ Sum / Breath. Let’s do it!

As has become traditional on the show, the judges talk about how this is the hardest song. They say that about literally all the songs, though. Vocal Coach Guy (VCG) wonders aloud if the guys chose the song voluntarily, or if they were forced to do it because no other songs were available. No, that was mostly Every Moment of You.

Breath was originally performed by Park Hyo Shin, who, per Wikipedia, “is a South Korean ballad singer and musical theatre actor known for his emotional vocals.” His songs have reached number one on k-pop hot 100 charts, beating established acts like A*pink. Breath came out in 2016 and hit number 1 in Korea. Here’s a cover of it by Chen from Exo, and here’s a cover of it by Jungkook from BTS, and here’s Bang Chan and Lee Know reacting to the original version. I just like covering my bases.

It’s a sad song, but it’s a bit hard to say what it’s actually about. It seems to be about being depressed and lost and not really wanting to face reality. I’ll let you read the lyrics and decide for yourself.

LTR: Lim Junhyeok, Choi Haram, Jeong Inseong from KNK, Lee Hwanhee from Up10tion

Lim Junhyeok, the one who was a member of Day6 for about six months, introduces himself as a singer-songwriter. He was V5.

Choi Haram introduces himself as the “icon of challenge”. He’s a musical actor and was V8.

Jeong Inseong is from KNK and seems to have a certain fanbase out there. He was V6. He introduces himself as the main vocal of KNK with a “soft charisma.”

Lee Hwanhee is from Up10tion, but you might remember him better from Boys Planet. He introduces himself as the cutie of team Breath. He smiles big, and then just a tiny bit looks like he wants to evaporate.

“Why do I keep going on these shows omg when will people just like my voice it’s a good voice I hate dancing I just want to sing oh god…” --Hwanhee, probably

The show makes a lot of their “prince-like visuals.” Are they handsome? You guys know by now that I have no idea who is or isn’t considered handsome by other people.

Eunkwang gets right to the point and says it’s an extremely difficult song, so did anyone there choose it voluntarily? Haram, looking dapper in his pinstripes, says it was his first choice. The judges ask why.

Time for a flashback!

I’ll tell you now the order that the guys join. Inseong was in 11th place and chose it first, then Haram in 21st place chose it. Hwanhee came right after Haram, while all other options were still open, so it’s fair to say that at least those three consciously chose the song as their best option. Junhyuk was tied for 38th and had a choice of either Every Moment or Breath, and chose Breath, so it wasn’t really much of a choice for him.

We see the guys talking about how Breath is hard and wondering who would want to tackle it. But we also see the other guys asking Haram what he wants to do, and he always answers “Sum” (Breath).

Side note: Kpop songs where you can hear the word “sum”! It’s in the first line of Sugar Rush Ride by TXT (saenggageun got sumeul meomchweosseo), it’s at the beginning of the chorus of Mmmh by Kai (Mmmh mmmh, sumeul naeshwigo baeteo like…), and of course it’s in the first line of Breathe, performed by Lee Hi and written by Jonghyun (sumeul keuge swieobwayo). Those were just the first few songs I thought of. If you open your ears, you’ll hear “sum” a lot.

We learn that Haram is a pianist as well as a musical actor.

Huh huh. Pianist.

Haram explains that he hasn’t engaged much in Korean music as he pursued classical music, but Park Hyoshin’s songs were his first exposure to singing. “I know it’s a really dangerous choice,” he interviews, “but I really wanted to sing the song that raised my dream on stage.”

Hwanhee takes the wrong route up to Breath and ends up going all the way around. Isn’t that just how things go for Hwanhee? He needs General Gunwook to boss him around.

As Junhyuk arrives on the team, we get to see a little of his life. (I found a nice video on Youtube of this part, if you want to watch it. )

He says that he writes and sings his own songs, confirming my suspicion that songwriting is his true love, not singing exactly. He says that he has been releasing singles, and even teaching students at an academy.

Pianist, Idol Main vocals, Singer-songwriter

Haram and Junhyuk take the lead on dividing harmonies almost immediately.

Inseong asks Hwanhee, what she would do now? And Hwanhee says, “I guess… take a breath?”

“They talked about music stuff a lot,” Hwanhee interviews. “To be honest, I don't know much about that. They were using difficult musical words so I couldn’t say anything. It was scary/” See? He needs someone to boss him around. Luckily, he has Haram and Junhyuk!

Hwanhee tries singing his part, using a lot of vibrato, and Junhyuk confirms my good opinion of him by suggesting that Hwanhee dial back the vibrato a lot. It’ll give it a more casual, conversational feel.

Haram is so glad to have Junhyuk on his side to help, and we see a little montage of Haram working really hard. Does this mean Haram will be top tier?

My thoughts:

This was a great performance. All four of them had voices I found myself liking a lot. Listening with my eyes closed, I was still able to pick out Hwanhee (I mean it’s pretty obvious) but I was listening to the others blindly and I found I had a positive opinion of all four voices. I don’t even want to nitpick them too much since I really thought this was all very good. I didn’t even mind the song -- I put this on my playlist.

Haram’s voice is so full and mature, it’s almost incongruous with his youthful looks. I really like how he sings, though I’d prefer if he used a little less vibrato. There may have been moments when he was very slightly off pitch, but I couldn’t swear to it because the song’s melody isn’t super clear to me. I also would have preferred if he sang with his eyes open. But those are nitpicks. His voice is lovely.

Side note: He and Hwanhee are both wearing suits that are way too big on them. What’s up with that, stylist unnies? Did you ask them to wear sweaters and they said no so you punished them with giant suits?

Inseong’s voice is rich like Haram’s, but not quite as deep, and a bit smoother. I have no criticism. He also does a great job harmonizing with Hwanhee, singing in a sweet falsetto. I know I’m not saying a lot about Inseong, but it’s just because I have no notes! He did great.

If you read my Boys Planet recaps, you know that I really like Hwanhee’s voice and always have. I think he sounds a lot like Baekhyun from Exo, and that is fully a compliment to both of them. He uses more vibrato than I would have liked here, but that’s a preference thing. I think he did great here, and I hope he won a few fans, since I feel like not many people supported him on Boys Planet. But isn’t it satisfying when it’s his turn to sing? I love his full belts.

I wasn’t thrilled with Junhyuk in his teaser performance, but I find his story so sad and affecting that I was really rooting for him. So I was so glad to find out that the full, bright, satisfying belts I heard with my eyes closed belonged to Junhyuk. He also proved himself singing low as a counterpoint to Haram later in the song. Ok, his vocal color is a tiny bit sharp in tone (not pitch), but not unpleasantly so. He can get a tiny bit nasal, but it’s never anything “bad.”

The harmonies were great overall, and I credit those to Junhyuk and Haram.

I don’t know who I’d pick as my top tier, I really don’t. Every time I think I’ve decided on someone and type his name, I immediately change my mind to someone else. This was a strong team, in my opinion.

The MNET Edit is kind, as is usual on this show. It was funny for me to hear one of my biases (Baekho) compliment another one of my biases (Hwanhee). But it seems that the judges didn’t like Junhyuk -- they were squirming around uncomfortably during his high belts. Well, I liked it, you dumb dumbs.

Hong Seong Jun is enjoying the singing. I think. I guess?

When the song is over, everyone applauds and says they did a good job.

VCG says that the song is hard to sing well, then tells Haram that he enjoyed his singing, for not trying to imitate the original singer too closely, but instead singing it in his own style.

VCG goes on to say that Junhyeok was disappointing with “one thing” -- his voice was too “bare” in the chorus. He wanted to hear his “modal voice”, which I think meant his chest voice. I disagree, personally. I think having the contrast of Junhyeok’s voice was refreshing. But I guess that’s just a matter of taste. Also, since VCG said that Junhyeok was disappointing with “one thing”, the implication is that VCG must have had a lot of compliments for Junhyeok as well that we didn’t get to see.

We don’t hear them say anything about Hwanhee or Inseong.

The judges vote, and it’s unanimous -- they all vote for Choi Haram.

That seems fair -- his singing was impeccable, and he also helped devise the harmonies.

Haram pretty much can’t believe it.

He almost looks like he’s going to pass out for a second, then says thank you and promises to keep working hard to justify his win.

As the guys leave the stage, the judges say that they’re glad that the difficult song worked out so well. Then VCG adds, “It’s so nice to have an audition with just singing. I’m used to dancing too and this is much better.”

Ok, my friends, I’ll post this much so that I can keep going crazy with as many screen shots as I want. Just two more songs to go! I fear I’m going to fall further and further behind… Sigh. League of Legends World Championship is in Europe this year and through my internship I can go watch some games for free in Berlin, but I am so anxious that my one friend is gonna ask to go with me and she knows nothing about league, nothing about esports and nothing about video games and the mere thought of having her tag along gives me pure anxiety.

Like this is the same friend who really wanted to go watch a kpop show and when we went to see KNK I couldn’t enjoy the first portion of the show because I kept worrying about her and worrying if she was having a good time.

And I really don’t want to have that same experience if I get to see SKT or TL... like I just want to go watch the match and cheer on my faves. I don’t want to have to babysit her and tell her what a fkn Baron steal is or what certain champs do.

But at the same time I feel so selfish, because she is truly someone who likes to learn new things and make new experiences and I feel so selfish and guilty for keeping this to myself..? But like whenever I go do things on my own she is like: Why didn’t you ask me to tag along...?

Like when Stray Kids came to Dusseldorf and I went I didn’t tell anyone and after she was like; I could have come why didn’t you tell me? But like I’m not gonna bring people to events that I know they’re not a fan of... I dunno I guess I’m weird like that.......... but I just.... I want to really enjoy worlds. I’ve wanted to go since 2016 but I didn’t get time off work and couldn’t drive to New York to watch the SKT vs ROX semi final (which I regret to this day tbh because that is still the greatest esports series I’ve ever witnessed)

I really want to cherish Worlds and the teams and the sports... but I also don’t want to forefully exclude my friends from this stuff... but like the last time me and her wanted to watch LEC together and it didn’t work out she reacted really dumb and I didn’t talk to her for days because I felt so hurt....

I just have to rant about this because it bothers me so much whenever I think of it and I don’t want to feel like this over something I am truly excited for and truly happy to somehow be a part of (seriously I took this internship over another because I knew the company worked with Riot and I could go see SKT or TL)
