decided to give Kirby some friends, reasons being because why not and they deserve some
meet the gang!! Artemisia (mostly known as "Artie"), Wendy O. (who is amab despite the name), and Doro (or Dory or Dora, she like them all)
Wendy and Doro are yōkai while Artie is a mutant, though she was mutated while she was very young, so she has no clear memory of her old life as human
they all met when Kirby was 10, a few weeks after they found out about their true origins. Kirby and Artie go to the same middle school up-top and hang out with Wendy and Doro in the Hidden City whenever they can
oh, and also, they're all nonbinary. but since they're still kids, they haven't figured it out yet

Who is Hal, really?
Like, we see so many different versions of him. We’re introduced to this awkward, neurotic, definitely not Mitchell, vampire in season 4. Oh cool, he has these friends he’s been with for years, that’s great!
Hal literally kept Leo chained up with the sole purpose to watch him kill people (and make money, as he mentions betting on the fight). This was actually in a prequel clip, not in the show - if you saw the clip, Hal and Leo’s relationship dynamic completely changes when we see them on screen together for the first time.
Throughout the show, Hal implores people to be his keeper, to watch him and make sure he doesn’t commit anymore sins. First Leo. In some ways, this is extremely cowardly - Hal puts the responsibility on others. If his inhibitions drop and he’s placed in just the right situation, he does awful things and can say “oh they didn’t watch me close enough”. I’m surprised Leo kept his promise - if I got free, the guy who initially kidnapped me would be getting these hands.
I really really like Hal and Annie’s dynamic. She is so opposite of him, and from the very beginning you see his discomfort. Then, when Kirby shows up, we get a scene where Hal wants to confess his sins. Part of it is because he would rather she hear it from him, but another part is something Hal does frequently - burden others with keeping him clean.
Who is Hal though? There are 3 parts of Hal. Of course there’s the awful part, that killed Cutler’s wife and who is 100% capable of becoming a genocidal dictator. Then there’s the part we see most of the time. Seemingly harmless vampire with obsessive compulsive tendencies, endearing in some way and obviously trying his best to stay out of trouble. But there’s this other part, that we only see a few times. It’s when the two overlap. There’s some glimpse of it with his prequel - he’s a “slavemaster” but he’s hesitant and ashamed, and wants to be someone else. We also know that this is the in between, as he references the cycles of bad and good Hal.
I think, living for over 500 years, Hal has had to develop a way to cope with everything he has done. There are old ones like Mr Snow who seem chill and totally fine with being menaces to society. But we SEE Hal is capable of acting without malice, of choosing to do things to keep others safe.
I propose then, that Hal, upon becoming a vampire and murdering people left and right, had at one point realized his psyche could not manage and be okay with it all. So, what better way to cope then to organize who you are. Hal is neurotic. He creates a line - bad Hal and kind Hal. It becomes black and white for him - he either goes full villain, or he is safe. He treats the bad part as another being, trying to separate his sins from who he is as a person. I suppose we can also see it as vampire Hal and Vampire Hal.
I struggle at times when trying to figure out who Hal is for real. Is this the true him, proper, neurotic, judgemental. How do these traits present in Vampire Hal. He dresses classy, he manipulates, and he harms. The judgement in this case leads to murder. Try to imagine Hal, the one awkwardly holding Eve, and when he turns Cutler. How can one man behave so contrastingly? The blood eases the anxiety and the pressure. Hal can let go, fall into habits. Without blood, he has to always be mindful.
So, other than being a story telling device; I see the Jekyll and Hyde aspect of him being a coping mechanism. He either fights the urges and the habits, vampire Hal who keeps a schedule, or, he goes full Vampire.

So I was talking with @loaflovesdoodling the other day and ended up getting a writing idea and… this happened :]
(Don’t worry btw it’s actually super fluffy lol)
Gentle snow drifted down from the clouded sky, gathering together in piles that looked like the powdered sugar that topped the treats that were proudly displayed in the windows of bakeries. Waddle Dees and Waddle Doos ran around together through the cold, while a group of Noddies huddled close to a Burning Leo for warmth.
  Despite the fur that covered most of his body, Twilight Knight was somehow cold. Their wings soared on the frigid air, tiny snowflakes melted as they made contact with the void-astral’s skin.
  Typically in this type of weather, the knight would be curled up in his room -sometimes with either Selene or Fylass cuddling with them- reading a book or maybe even watching a movie that either of their aforementioned siblings had fallen asleep to.
However today obviously deviated from that norm, as today he was finally going to spend some well deserved bonding time with their older brother,
Pleiades.
  Compared to all of his other siblings, Pleiades was…a curious case. The immortal never would talk about his past, but they didn’t as well come to think of it.
  Not to mention the two’s first conversation was extremely awkward, as Ades had heard that he was the knight that actually defeated Nightmare and planned to challenge him to a duel before realizing that they were -in Pleiades’ own words not his- a child.
  Those words hung in the back of Twilight Knight’s mind and remained, like a dull wound.
  Though everything else considered, Ades was an amazing brother!
  Which was why at the first chance that he got, the void-astral had asked the immortal if he wanted to watch a movie with them sometime.
  Much like the man himself, Pleiades lived in a rather quiet part of planet Popstar, rather far away from the rest of his siblings who in comparison lived close to one another.
  Though fortunately, through the snow he could see the lights of Ades’ house waving at them from the ground. He sighed in relief knowing that they weren’t going to be out in the cold for much longer.
  A moment later, Twilight Knight went in for a landing a little ways away from the front door of his brother’s house. Their dusty purple wings shifted back into a cape that actually managed to keep him warm.
  Shaking off some of the excess snow that had gathered on their antennae, the knight knocked on the door. “Heya Ades! I’m here for our movie day!”
  There was no response from the other side which put the void-astral on edge. There were typically only two reasons why Pleiades wouldn’t answer the door, he either wasn’t home…or he had been drinking.
  “Ades? You home?” They tried again a little less hopeful, but to his surprise, this time actually getting a response.
  From the other side of the door a slightly muffled voice let out a series of curses that they only heard from his father when something on the Halberd went wrong -which was typically Kirby finding the secret stash of sweets.
  Which was followed by the same voice telling him through the door, “I’ll be there in a minute!” Twilight Knight breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that his brother was actually awake and conscious stowed away their worries for another time.
  Just like he’d said, the door opened a minute later and there stood a somewhat frazzled looking Pleiades, his light teal hair obviously hadn’t been done and he didn’t even have his mask on.
  “Apologies, TK. I didn’t hear you knock the first time,” the immortal explained, “now I do believe we have a movie day to get started, shall we?”
  The knight smiled and nodded and stepped into Pleiades’ home.
                                      ~~~~~~~~~~~~
  Compared to every other home that Twilight Knight had been in, by far Ades’ looked the most…cozy was the right word for it he felt. Warm yellow tinted lights illuminated the joined living room and kitchen, a blanket was sprawled over the back of a faux leather couch. Their eyes were then moved to the kitchen that looked so spotless and pristine that he wondered if Pleiades actually ever used it.
  The door closed behind them, “I’ll go make popcorn, you go get comfortable and find a movie for us.”
  Wordlessly, the knight walked towards the couch finding the remote and scrolling through the movies that their older brother had. But his mind had been drawn away from the tv scene and became distracted by the sound of Pleiades going through each of his cabinets presumably looking for the   popcorn.
  This continued for a moment before he groaned and came back into the living room. “Apparently I forgot to pick up popcorn while I was out last, I’m sorry for this.”
  “Eh I’m not too heartbroken about popcorn Ades, I’m happy that I’m gettin’ to spend time with you!”
  Pleiades looked surprised for a moment before giving a sort of amused smile. “You are far too kind, Twi. Now, what are we gonna be watching today?”
  Focus shifting back towards the tv, the void-astral scrolled for another moment before finding something that he thought maybe their brother would like.
  “You ever see The Nightmare Before Christmas?”
  “No, I can’t say I have.”
  Admitting that was Ades’ fatal mistake, as a moment later the knight’s eyes lit up (literally and figuratively).
  “It’s such a cool movie! It’s completely stop motion- it’s a gem from its era and is so beautifully done at a time where that type of animation wasn’t common, and I-” Twilight Knight stopped himself, noticing how loud they were being.
  As quick as it had come, the spark in his eyes had faded and the knight went quiet again. “I’m just gonna…let it speak for itself.” They said as the movie started playing, never seeing the perplexed look in Pleiades’ crimson eyes.
                                      ~~~~~~~~~~~~
  From what he could tell, their brother was either incredibly interested in the movie or was completely uninterested- and he had no clue which one it was.
  “It’s called the ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ so is it a Christmas or a Halloween movie?”
  The void-astral shrugged, “eh there’s been some debate over it but in my opinion, it’s both.”
  “Nice.”
  The movie continued without interruptions, and by the looks of it, Twilight Knight had gotten his answer as a smile formed across the immortal’s face. And not before long, the knight’s favorite song of the movie had started playing.
  “There are few who deny, at what I do I am the best! For my talents are renowned far and wide.” Jack Skellington began to sing and the music followed.
  Without realizing it, Twilight Knight had begun to hum along to the music knowing the words by heart. The song went on and he continued to quietly hum the melody.
  The music began to slow, “But who here would ever understand, that the Pumpkin King with the skeleton grin. Would tire of his crown?” Without even realizing it, they’d looked over to Pleiades who was looking at the screen rather intently.
  “Ya’know,” the knight said in the moment of silence they had, “you kinda remind me of Jack.”
  The immortal chuckled, “why? Because I’m tall?” He figured.
  “Yeah sure, whatever you wanna say- but I’ll have you know compared to most astrals I’m above average in height!”
  Pleiades snickered, “you’re like, eleven Kawasaki’s sauce packets tall-”
  “Shhh! The movie’s going on!” Twilight Knight said, half to make his brother be quiet and half because the movie really was starting up again.
                                      ~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before either of them even realized, the movie ended and so did the day. The sun had set quite a while ago and the chill of the night coupled with the snow falling outside was…going to be difficult to fly back to the Halberd in.
  Holding back a yawn, the void-astral got up from the couch. “Thanks a lot Ades, it’s been a lot of fun hanging out with you! Have a great evening!” They thanked, moving towards the door.
  “Uh- Twilight,” his brother stopped them, “you do remember that there’s a snowstorm going on right now?”
  The knight shrugged Pleiades’ worries off, “I’ve flown in worse conditions! I’ll be fine I’m sure, plus I wouldn’t want to overstay my welcome.”
  At that last comment, the immortal almost seemed taken aback. “Twilight, you could never ‘overstay’ your welcome here. You’re my brother, and it’d be insanely rude of me to kick you out in the middle of a snowstorm.”
  He sighed, “alright, if you insist. I can take the couch-”
  “You’re my guest. I’ll take the couch and you can sleep in my bed for tonight.”
  “Ades, it's your house. I’m fine with taking the couch.”
  “Nonsense, I-”
  The back and forth went on for a while longer, neither one wanting to coincide, until finally an agreement was reached; cuddles.
  Despite cuddling being a pretty frequent occurrence with all of their other siblings. Twilight Knight had actually not had cuddles with his older brother before. A fact which they wished he’d done much earlier as it was proving to be rather comforting.
  And before long he began to slip into the metaphorical embrace of sleep, and the literal embrace of Pleiades.
Common Kirby Eyes
Tumblr media
Common eyes you see on characters in the Kirby franchise. Obviously other types exist, but odds are high new characters will have one of these three.
KIRBY STYLE - Mostly black oval, large white circle near the top, colored crescent near the bottom. Used by Kirby, Waddle Dees, and a lot of classic enemies like Scarfy or Poppy Bros Jr
SCLERA STYLE - Has a visible white to the eye, generally has an iris designed similarly to the Kirby style eyes above with color as a small crescent and a shine spot. Iris size may vary. Used by King Dedede, classic enemies like Bronto Burt and Burning Leo, as well as both Leon and Carol from Forgotten Land
GLOWING EYES - An oval or circle in one color, often glowing out of a dark space. Used by Meta Knight (older games had it only when masked, modern games do it always), Magolor, Vividria, all of the other Knight characters, and plenty of characters who have their face obstructed such as Hooded Hyness or Jammerjab
1, 2, 6, and 8 for All's Fair 🥰
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Favorite scene or line?
I'll answer both!
Scene: Definitely the end of 'Gravity of It All,' where Andi and April are talking to the boys about saving Kirby on the fire escape. I think I aced the feeling I was going for, and I loved Andi taking April's hand and comforting her. I think I really aced her loyalty and her protectiveness over her best friend. 🩷
Line: Hmmm...I'm gonna cheat and say a few lines, from 'It's Nice To Have A Friend':
"Gah, if only she could love someone like me!" He exclaimed, then sighed to himself as he calmed down. "She'd make me the happiest turtle this side of the Atlantic...and I'd do everything to make her the happiest girl, no questions asked..." Out of instinct, he picked up the controller again, his gaze averting to it. "But, to be fair, Donatello, your feelings for her aren't gonna change the fact that she's always gonna be a friend to you. You know darn well that at the end of the day, even if she never loves you back, she's still gonna be your lab partner and especially your friend."
I really love this part, and this chapter, in particular. This is what separates canon Don from my Don; the latter, I feel like, is more emotionally mature and is more accepting of heartache - and clearly wants Andi regardless of the type of relationship - lovers, best friends, whatever. Canon Don can be a little too creepy with his feelings towards April (granted, the writers never really gave him a chance to experience heartbreak with April turning him down,) while I feel like my Don is more aware of the possibility that Andi wouldn't reciprocate his feelings, but as he said, he still sees her as a friend no matter what.
2. Did you have any ideas that didn't make the final cut?
I did! So without going into spoiler territory, let me explain:
Season 2's finale is gonna be a consecutive set of gut punches, we obviously know that. But along with Leo getting beaten half to death, Andi's also gonna have a fight with a recurring antagonist - who is gonna stab her and leave her to bleed out. This is still confirmed, but who finds her is different.
Originally, it was Donnie that was gonna find her. He was going to let his anxiety about her leaving April's apartment get the better of him and go searching for her, where he would find her bleeding out and seeing little snowflakes get on her body. He would frantically try and patch her up, before starting to sob and hit his fist against the rooftop asphalt in pain, all while freaking out who could've done this.
But I scrapped it for a different route - one that not only expands upon two other characters, but also makes Donnie patching her up have more sense to it, as he'll do it at April's apartment, where a first aid kit is readily available.
So in the final cut, Raph and Casey are the ones who find her right before they get to April's apartment. Raph is shocked and absolutely livid, immediately going to tie off Andi's wound to stop it from bleeding further with his bandana - all while fighting back tears at seeing his little sister like this (obviously they're not actually siblings, but their dynamic has already been established at this point.)
Casey is admittedly more shocked. He's never seen Andi be this vulnerable before, so to see it happen is crazy to him. He'll do his best to try and get her to talk to them and ask what happened to her (and even better, who did it,) but when Andi weakly tells them who (no spoilers as to who,) that's when she's goes unconscious. He'll look at Raph with confusion (like, 'who's she talking about?') and Raph will grimly tell him as he's picking up Andi - and admittedly, he's gonna feel guilty about assuming she's annoying because she just wants to be. Her life isn't all it's cracked up to be, and he's gonna gain a little bit of respect for her.
Granted, they're still not gonna be best friends, but there will be a mutual, almost grudging, kind of respect.
6. What character(s) do you find most difficult to write?
Hm...that's an interesting question. I think because she's the new addition to the cast and I have to imagine her part in each scene she's in, I'd have to say Andi, funny enough. It's only because I grew up with the canon story that I know it so well and I feel like I can read the minds of each character, but Andi's a different story, because all of her dialogue is my own and I have to consider her part in whatever scene she's in.
8. Which fic/headcanon do you feel most proud of?
By fic, I'm gonna interpret that as chapter 😅
So admittedly, I'm most proud of both 'The Very First Night' and 'It's Nice To Have A Friend'. I think both have really solid dialogue and action sequences, and have some of my favorite Andi moments. 'Very First Night' has Andi's concussion and her meeting Donnie for the first time, and 'It's Nice' has some really sweet Don/Andi moments, Andi being protective over April (I especially like her panicking over April leaving to storm the Kraang base,) and my favorite line in the series, 'The one who is called your mother wears the boots that are made for combat.'
And for headcanon? Probably the idea that Don and Andi are major fans of Stranger Things. Obviously the show wouldn't exist when the story takes place (All's Fair is in 2012, Stranger Things came out in 2016), but in my mind, they're both huge fans; constantly quoting their favorite scenes, commentating over each episode (giving theories, cheering or booing certain characters, etc.), and losing their minds when the new season comes out. And I'll finish it off with; every time a new season comes out, they claim the living room for themselves, get a ton of snacks, make a pillow fort for good measure, and binge the whole thing in one go.
----------
Lord, that was a lot 😅 But regardless, thank you for the ask! Love you ❤️
4, 44, and 50 for the ask game?
ask game here !!
4. OC you rarely talk about?
UHHH MOST OF THEM dude I have so many 😭 though if we want to talk about characters I haven't seen in eons (not even in private), Spica's gonna be the one. As far as I can tell her last mention was in 2018 (back when she was just named Spice).... yikes. She was my first Kirby OC and was incredibly barebones but I love her and I'm happy I kept her anyway even if she hasn't really been touched on since.
her btw vvvv
Tumblr media
44. Something you like about your OCs in general?
Design-wise? Very shaped! I love my weird little children and even if their designs don't make any sense half the time I quite enjoy the freedom in that. Otherwise I also just like writing relationships between the characters and I really often fall into making any given OC part of a set.
50. General OC talk.
Umm obviously I can't bring up everyone but I suppose I could talk about Captain Crow? It's a small little story I wrote a while back about retired fish pirates. When they realize their ship is breaking down, they're forced to stop and settle in a small town. The captain ends up recruiting a new member named Leo and they get along for several years without a hitch mostly. Leo has ties to the captain regarding her own family and their uh... deaths, and only initially approached the group to get a chance at revenge. Over time she gets increasingly anxious and questions if she even wants to do it anymore but she kills the captain one night during a panic attack leaving the decision made. The whole crew kind of falls apart after that and Leo takes the captain's place, adopting his name and living in the ship :3
Gonna make a character with fire-powers who wears what is obviously a nod to Burning Leo's headdress and has basically the same move-set, such that if that character ends up in Smash, their copy-power when Kirby inhales them is going to just be the Fire Ability from the main series, as an inverse of how Sword Kirby is basically just Link.
Uhhh TMNT oc lore!!! (copy and pasted from my notes)
ace lore🤯 (tmnt 2012)
COUGH okay so like
Ace was a baby/toddler (like 2yrs old??) when Karai was like, 4 years old. He was abandoned by his parents and was kinda left on the street to die. Karai found him one day and was like “WOW!! FREE BROTHER!!!”
She ended up taking him home (because who would leave a kid out on the street?) and told shredder she wanted to keep him. He did NOT want some stupid little kid but he accepts just for karai’s sake.
And this ends up in what we call: FAVORITISM‼️‼️
He REALLY favored Ace’s sister over him. Karai had a better childhood than ace because shredder kinda didn’t really want him around and couldn’t care less. To justify Ace’s mere presence, shredder tried to train him into “the perfect ninja”. He overworked ace a lot and always forced him to be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. Any less and ace would get whooped or something. He was also PRETTY manipulative to the kid.
By the time ace was 12 and Karai was 16, all the shenanigans with the turtles were starting. And this year of Ace’s life, shredder found out about uh.. the mutagen.
So he kinda tricked Ace into getting mutated with an arctic fox. You know. Just as an experiment..
Also ace was DEVASTATED when he had heard Karai was accidentally mutated. Shredder convinced him it was the turtles fault, and from there ace started fighting them a LOT more in hoping he’d “avenge” his sister. (side note: ace didn’t know Karai was splinter’s daughter because shredder wouldn’t dare let him know the truth so BOTH his kids go against him. He just lied to ace and said Karai was missing the whole time she was trapped in shredder’s lair and that the TURTLES did something to Karai. So ace was also fighting them more after that but after she was mutated it doubled because he was mad about what they did to his sister.)
(And another note: Karai did NOT support mutating Ace but she couldn’t stop shredder. Her and ace are on really good terms but she’s been busy with the turtles and whatnot ever since meeting them, leaving ace alone for the most part.)
Now timeskip to S3 of 2012. The SECOND kraang invasion happens and ace ends up getting lost.. until he spots the turtles fleeing in kirby’s van off to NorthHampton. Being a 12 year old mutant fox with daddy issues and unrealized trauma who’s currently stuck and lost in the middle of an alien invasion, he followed them.
He stayed there for three months kinda just faring on his own. A day or two after Leo woke up from his coma, he was taking a walk in the woods when WOAH SOMEONE JUST TRIED TO SHOOT HIM DOWN WITH AN ARROW?! (Ace is both an archer and a bunrai user) He looked up at the trees from where it came from and the person ran away?? What just happened??
Bros got no time to be the thinker because ace pins him down in a flash and he has his bunrai up against Leo’s throat.
They already know eachother since ace was fighting the turtles a lot after the whole Karai thing so Leo’s like “oh shoot it’s this guy”
Leo ends up finding out that ace believes the turtles are the reason for everything that happened to Karai and Leo tries to explain that shredders lying and stuff and he’s literally the worst father ever.
Ace starts reflecting on his childhood and hes like “oh shoot he might have a point”
Leo convinced him to put down the weapons and have ace stay with them (because Leo feels pity for they guy, I mean, he’s literally just some twelve year old with hella trauma and got mutated by his DAD.)
Obviously at first no one really trusts him.. especially not raph. I mean, bringing in someone from THE FOOT?! Nonetheless shredders SON? That’s a no go.
Conflict happens here and there, ace gains their trust AND THIS MARKS THE START OF ACE’S SELF DISCOVERY ARC🔥🔥
Because up until this point, he was basically nothing but another soldier for shredder thanks to how he was raised. He didn’t really know what he wanted or what he liked. All he knew was how to fight and serve. The most fun he got was purely from his sister.
Anyway, timeskip to after the NorthHampton arc, they’re back in NY and they work together and whatnot to stop the kraang. Ace ESPECIALLY helped when finding Karai. Leo was out looking for her a lot and Ace often joined him.
By now, his self discovery arc is almost done. He’s got his own personality and likes by now. But he’s still got lasting effects and whatnot (I’ll go over that later). But he’s definitely better now! And side note.. he’s the closest to Leo. Cause I said so. Also because Leo’s the nicest to him.
Now to wrap up his identity arc, they get into a fight with shredder and ace finally fights back against his dad and shoots him in the eye to help the others escape from the battle. Also he maybe cussed shredder out a lil <3
So.. aftermath. He stays with the turtles a long time. But around the time Karai makes her own clan with shinigami, ace left and went off with his sister. He’s still very close with the turtles and visits often but most times you’ll see him with his sister and her girlfriend— I mean, Shinigami.
So like he’s a pretty big perfectionist and tends to overwork himself and stuff. But he’s learned to be a bit more carefree now and to have fun. He really enjoys comics and cartoons, his favorite being space hero’s (thanks a lot, leo.) and he’s way happier than before. He’s got daddy issues and maybe some small abandonment and attachment issues.. bro can also be a little hotheaded. He HATES when things don’t go his way and he HATES when he isn’t being “perfect” or showing that he’s “better” and “worthy”. He’s also HELLA scared of people getting mad at him. He’s pretty sensitive and gentle, actually.
As for his personality? Like me. But more mature, he’s VERY headstrong, stubborn, gentle, caring, and he’s a HUGE perfectionist as said before. He hates the idea of failing even just a bit.
And as for appearance he’s basically just IDW alopex but he’s got these cool little spiral in his fur which are natural. He’s also got this belt that goes from his shoulder to his waist and it has a bag in the back to hold his bow and arrows, and the the front of the belt holds things like daggers, shurikens, smoke bombs, etc. and he has a waist band that has pockets for his bunrais. The waist band, belt, and bag are all a sort of greyish black color.
𝟏𝟏. 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐁𝐄𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐃 𝐔𝐑𝐋 :  for this blog? it’s based off a line that abe has in the first movie about hellboy. i usually try to do stuff like that for URLs, though it varies depending on the muse of course.
Has Kirby ever thought about running away? And I'm not talking about the passing thought of leaving, I'm talking about literally thinking about it, reasoning about it, thinking about the consequences of running away, about what he would do after he ran away.
well, Kirby has thought of running away, but since they're still pretty much a child, to them running away means leaving for a few hours and then coming back. they don't have a good grasp between the difference of "running away" and "going out"
maybe, when they're a little bit older, they meet a group of slightly bigger teens. mostly mid-to-late high school age. and, well, they're somewhat of a bad influence. Kirby, having been raised mostly in the Lair with their only influence on friendships being television and comics, has no idea about this
all of them come from shitty backgrounds with even shittier parents, and all of them talk down about them on the daily. Kirby just feels uncomfortable whenever they do, but they're too nervous to leave when that happens. they think that their friends probably don't mean any of what they say
(they do. they very much do)
and, being from shitty backgrounds, they can probably smell that Kirby's homelife isn't as good as they believe. and it kind of isn't, but Kirby tries to make it work. some confusion and misunderstandings lead their friends to believe that Kirby needs to get out of there, and all of them are willing to help them
the friend group were planning to run away from their homes and move somewhere else, maybe to the East Coast. and now they're planning on bringing Kirby along. all of them know that they can't outright ask them to come along since they're still very much a little kid, and they're very obviously not going to run away from their home at the drop of a hat. so the friend group tricked them, telling them about a sleepover they were going to have in one of their homes when their parent's weren't around, so they better pack some clothes and toiletries
and Kirby is excited. very excited. their first sleepover! sure it's in somewhat of a bad side of the Hidden City, and their dad is very worried about the location and that their friends are older kids, but a sleepover nonetheless! it's great!
they pack up quickly and get there early, with dad's help. a couple of hugs and goodbyes later, Kirby is climbing up the stairs to their friend's apartment, only to be met with all of them ushering them to the window so they can climb down using the fire escape. they're worried about leaving their stuff, but one of them says, "take 'em, you'll need them", which just confuses Kirby even more. all of them cross through a portal, put on some cloaking broaches (or, in Kirby's case, pull their hoodie up), go to a bus station, by some tickets, and get onboard
Kirby, by now, is panicking. they don't know what's happening, and by now they wanns go home. they try to get up and get out, but one of their "friends" holds them back and keeps them seated, telling them that everything will be better now once they leave New York
and that... sort of makes something inside Kirby snap
they don't want to leave New York. they don't want to leave dad. they don't want to leave their family, or the Lair, or their toys and comic books. they don't want to leave any of that behind
and this is the instance that Kirby's ninpō shows up
they land on their bed, shaking and this close to tears. they don't even think about what will happen next. they just run to their dad's room and don't let go for the longest time
Leo has no moderate idea what just happened, but by instinct, he wraps his arm around kirby's tiny frame and hugs them back
they'll talk in the morning
Tried to include all the big things of note that i could think of. Got it on Pre-order so obviously took me a lil longer than others considered, but that's the main game complete, every Waddle Dee, every treasure rode (though not perfect times), every Leo soul, upgraded every weapon (with the fire and sword ability being upgraded once each), and so far my best time in the first colosseum battle. What i have left now is all the figures to collect, every side thing in Waddle Dee town as i basically didn't touch it, getting every fast time in the treasure roads, and the 3rd Colosseum battle, then i think that is it? But first i want lunch, i also need to go back to Luigi's Mansion as i only got B rank on that and had lots left
Honestly I'm a LIL sad by how short the game is, although it took me a while to do everything, it's only cause i played 1 world a day, if that. Over all though the game was easy although it did have a few challenges (i repeat, fuck you Silly Dillo and fuck your name), but a lot of the challenge came from optional stuff in a sense, so that is good. This is my first time playing a Kirby game, i have only ever seen playthroughs before, and as a first real play, i loved it! It was such an enjoyably and fun game! I am sad i beat it already, but least there is a few things left for me to try
All-Star Superman Annotations: Smash Mouth
In the late 1990s, Grant Morrison legendarily met ‘Superman’ in a self-described shamanic encounter outside the San Diego convention center at 2 in the morning and questioned him. His answers and general demeanor inspired his take on the character in his 1998 Superman 2000/Superman NOW pitch alongside Mark Waid, Mark Millar, and Tom Peyer, and later his seminal All-Star Superman alongside Frank Quitely, Jamie Grant, Phil Balsman, and Travis Lanham.
The year after that initial pitch - whether out of the transcendent synchronicities Morrison has written on underlying the seeming arbitrary mundanity of day-to-day life, or significant behind-closed-doors dealings - Smash Mouth released its equally seminal All-Star.
youtube
The superheroic associations are immediately evident. But Mystery Men (very fun movie) and Steve Harwell lifting a bus are but the tip of the iceberg. Or perhaps more appropriately the edge of a cliff, for when you peer within, the connections here go deep.
Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb In the shape of an "L" on her forehead
The opening of the song is obviously an evocation of the underlying rivalry between longtime nemeses’ Superman and Lex Luthor, with the latter mocking his erstwhile opponent on his idealistic shortsightedness in Lex’s mind, as well as that by poisoning him via solar radiation overdose he has at last triumphed. Of course, as the narrative remains on Superman’s side, Luthor’s worldview is exposed as self-aggrandizing solipsism, rendering him looking kind of dumb. That the figure of the song is referred to as ‘she’ is curious; perhaps this is in fact Nasthalsia ‘Nasty’ Luthor. Or it may refer to a sort of conceptual malleability of identity referring to Luthor’s eventual transformation via rehabilitation and time-travel into Leo Quintum, a decidedly more flamboyant and effeminate figure than the decidedly machismo-poisoned Luthor.
Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running Didn't make sense not to live for fun Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb So much to do, so much to see So what's wrong with taking the back streets? You'll never know if you don't go You'll never shine if you don't glow
‘Hit the ground running’ is an apt choice of words when the title of the first chapter is Faster...; the progression of time and defiance of rules, going down the backstreets, can be read as his reaching beyond the typical rules and structures that have fenced him in over decades of continuity and tradition in the face of his pending mortality, such as revealing his identity to Lois (his realization of his mistreatment of her and their relationship as his intellect increases corresponds neatly to his brain getting smart but his head getting dumb), freeing Kandor, and entrusting humanity and Quintum/Luthor specifically with his genetic legacy.
Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid And all that glitters is gold Only shooting stars break the mold
Morrison referenced in his All-Star Superman exit interview with Newsarama his initial frustration with the All-Star brand going on his definitive Superman text, seeing it as an intrusive corporate logo (not knowing that it would ultimately come to be associated predominantly with that one story) when he wanted his story to be seen simply as ‘Superman’. Choosing to work with what he had, his story finds Superman becoming a literal golden glittering all-star shooting across the sky, pure information, an untouchable incorporeal living myth sprung from a man as akin to the ‘rock star’ image formed around ordinary people (such as Morrison himself in his younger days with his band The Mixers). The subject of payment will be returned to at the conclusion.
It's a cool place and they say it gets colder You're bundled up now, wait till you get older But the meteor men beg to differ Judging by the hole in the satellite picture The ice we skate is getting pretty thin The water's getting warm so you might as well swim My world's on fire, how about yours? That's the way I like it and I never get bored
This verse at first appears to be in reference to the coming of the freezing All-Night of the Bizarro Underverse, and Superman’s return as a ‘meteor man’ crashing into a travelling circus. However, while this is a neat narrative transition it is in fact in reference to metaphorical coldness and figurative meteor men, in the form of Bar-El and Lilo, and Superman’s reckoning with his Kryptonian heritage (though the opening lines also evoke the emotional coldness and grappling with mortality that define #5-6: it is this central 6-issue chunk that make up the night side of the archetypal journey into the underworld and rebirth that Morrison has commented formed the mythical structure of the series). The ‘hole in the satellite picture’ is interesting; it could be seen as a roundabout reference to the Kryptonian couple’s conquest of human culture as seen in Metropolis both architecturally and in Jimmy’s adoption of Kryptonian overpants and belt, culminating in the literal hole in the moon (symbolic of dreams, as all culture is the product of) patched up with human cultural artifacts such as the Golden Gate Bridge. More pertinently however, it evokes General Zod’s command of the airwaves in 2013′s Man of Steel, where he not only inhabits a colonialist view of planet Earth evocative of Bar-El and Lilo, but mentions that Superman “could have built a New Krypton in this squalor”, a direct line lift from the issue. Either the time-bending syncronicities go further than initially realized, Morrison played an extremely long game while consulting on the film, or Zack Snyder is not only in fact in possession of the deep understanding of Superman and his source material that his apologists claim, but himself figured this all out a very long time ago and adjusted his work accordingly. In any case, the Kryptonian astronauts’ belief in the “uncontested superiority and grandeur of Kryptonian culture” is impotent in the face of their own failing bodies and ultimate realization that Superman is right; their time has passed, the ice getting thin, and Superman’s kindness and willingness to engage human culture on its own terms - to swim - must carry the day. Per Morrison, “In mythic terms, if Superman is the story of a young king, found and raised by common people, then Krypton is the far distant kingdom he lost. It’s the secret bloodline, the aristocratic heritage that makes him special, and a hero. At the same time, Krypton is something that must be left behind for Superman to become who he is - i.e. one of us. Krypton gives him his scientific clarity of mind, Earth makes his heart blaze.” (Bolding my own)
(Chorus repeats)
Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas? I need to get myself away from this place I said yep what a concept I could use a little fuel myself And we could all use a little change
The final non-repeating section of the song represents a final struggle between Luthor’s materialistic outlook, only able to see ‘change’ and ‘fuel’ in crass physical, monetary terms, while the enlightened Superman - transformed by his own process of personal growth and forthcoming elevation to solar deity - is capable of discerning a deeper meaning. That this is framed as an exchange, and more specifically an education, hints at Lex’s lesson at the hands of his senses in the worthwhile of the immaterial, divine unity of humanity that will prompt his transformation into Quintum, tying the story in a neat loop. Incidentally, the prospect of ‘change’ as monetary value while not a prominent factor in All-Star Superman will go on to have significant roles in both his major subsequent Superman works, Action Comics and Multiversity (the latter of which by his own admission evokes All-Star in its Thunderworld Adventures chapter, going on to reckon with the capitalistic give-and-take of commercial storytelling aiming for the type of enlightenment Morrison seeks to provide in its concluding issue), advancing the connections of the song to All-Star’s post-release impact as well as its text.
(Chorus repeats, concluding the song)
A final note: but the Meteor Men beg to differ is not only the most Jack Kirby-ass line that dude never wrote, but always reminds me of the 1993 Robert Townsend picture The Meteor Man, which I apparently viewed as a child and which I have always misremembered as having a direct connection to the 1978 Superman. I could swear I recall a bit of a picture being shown of a man with a meteor that’s the same picture of the man who found Kryptonite in the Donner film, the latter of which of course was a tremendous influence on All-Star Superman.
once upon a time i talked here about how to do an arc-involved stardew au for taz balance but now my brain’s been infested by the thought of one for taz amnesty so here’s the thoughts so far:
obviously, the spa up in the mountains is the stardew equivalent of the hot springs in amesty - it literally even recharges your health/energy! it’s too perfect
you’d think mayor lewis would be mama but it’s actually Leah. Artist, secluded cabin in the woods, sculptor? Mama is Leah all the way, though she does take a much more active role in the community
Namely, instead of having all the Sylphs live in her cabin, she finds places for them to live among the citizens of Pelican Town. Some of them are Sylphs who have been there longer than her, and some of them are totally-in-the-dark humans, but the town manages
Lewis is one of the humans, I’m thinking the dude who has the swimmer kid? The Sheriff, whatever his name is
Mr. Qi is absolutely Heathcliff
The Player is Aubrey, Ned is Gunther, and Duck is... Duck’s tricky. IDK who he is /yet/, but Thacker is definitely Linus
Rasmodius is 1000% the Sylph who teaches Aubrey about magic and Sylvain, and instead of Vincent or Jas being the kid who can talk in Aubrey’s mind, that’s secretly the witch’s kid (not an actual npc in stardew but shhhh)
Instead of bundles for the community center, there’s quests to kill abominations - the things left behind by the abominations will restore the community center, which is secretly the gate to Sylvain and/or the stone that contained Sylvain. Aubrey is eternally drawn to the Center because of her necklace.
Abigail is Dani and she’s the “niece” of Leo Tarkesian, who’s the replacement for Pierre
Jojamart is actually the aliens; when you finally kick out jojamart and lightning breaks down the door is the stardew equivalent of blowing up the gate and sidestepping into the ship. The whole store was a front for the alien control center, and when it’s abandoned you can finally see it for what it is and defeat the final enemies (which take place of the missing bundle) and stop the trend of setting planets against each other.
The reason Jojamart wanted the community center so badly wasn’t actually because they wanted a warehouse - it was because they wanted to reclaim control of the gate there, after a fierce legal and literal battle left it a no-man’s-zone
ACTUALLY. Duck is also a player; he lives on the farm and Aubrey gets to live with him when she accidentally sets the bus on fire on the way to Zuzu City. They tend the farm together and train and he teaches her about plants and model ships and French onion soup in between fighting bom-boms
Keith (TAZA Keith, not Stardew Keith) and Hollis replace Alex and Haley - not sure who’s where yet but they’re the total rebel jocks of the town
Sam is Jake Coolice!!!!!! SAM IS JAKE COOLICE!!!!
Keith (Stardew Keith, not TAZA Keith) is a) not married to Jodi and b) actually Joseph Stern, who returns from a secret FBI mission to where he lives with his human sister, his sister’s son, and his “nephew” (Jake) who he doesn’t want to believe isn’t human
Sebastian is now Kirby and Krobus is the dude who’s stuck as a goatman/Ryan Reynolds doppelganger (which is a SENTENCE lmfao taza went some wild places)
anyways. as you can see this au suddenly barged into my head and now lives here rent free. please take it if you want to do something with it or add on or whatever
When the Veronica Mars fan-funded film was released in 2014, no one could have predicted it would help to usher in a trend of revivals and reboots and remakes that would come to dominate Hollywood. And certainly no one could have predicted the series, a neo-noir about a teenage private detective in its original form, would be returning again five years later, this time as an eight-episode limited series on Hulu.
And yet the show's refusal to accept defeat feels like a perfect encapsulation of the spirit of Veronica Mars herself. Brought to vivid life by Kristen Bell, Veronica always gets back up. She plays by her own rules, never allowing herself to be content with or conform to the status quo. She's never what you expect, and she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to. Along with her sparkling wit, these are her most admirable traits. But as with any revival, one has to wonder what the end goal ultimately is.
The feature film funded by fans through a Kickstarter allowed series creator Rob Thomas to craft an ending where there previously wasn't one. A parade of familiar faces, it was heavy on the nostalgia but light on the intricate, well-paced mysteries that originally set the show apart. This new chapter in the Veronica Mars saga doesn't serve the same purpose. It's not a trip down memory lane or an extended coda; it's an opportunity to test the waters and find out whether or not Veronica Mars still has life left in her. The world of television has changed a lot since the series first debuted on UPN, and although audiences might not have been ready for her then, they very well may be now.
Hulu is referring to these eight new episodes as Season 4 rather than simply a limited series, and while that doesn't necessarily mean anything, we can't discount the fact this is the second time the show has returned from the dead or that Bell, whose NBC series The Good Place will be ending after this upcoming season, and Thomas have both already expressed an interest in continuing Veronica's story beyond what we see here. The stakes are infinitely higher now than they were five years ago when the film hit theaters. The new season has to appeal to longtime fans as well as potential new ones. This ultimately means the overarching mystery at the heart of the season has to be strong enough to carry the weight and then some. The story has to push Veronica forward in a meaningful way. And for the most part, it succeeds.
When the show returns, Veronica is still working alongside television's No. 1 dad, Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni), as a private eye in her hometown of Neptune, California. She and Logan (Jason Dohring), who is still in the military (and remains incredibly handsome), are still together and have adopted a dog named Pony since we saw them last. They're happy and stable, but Logan's job often takes him away suddenly for weeks or months at a time. While he's constantly moving, Veronica is more or less standing still. And she appears completely content with her life. But when a series of deadly bombings hit the town during the month-long celebration of spring break and threaten the city's tourism industry, and thus the livelihood of Neptune's quickly disappearing working class, Veronica dives headfirst into solving the case.
The class divide of Neptune, with the working class pitted against the town's rich elite, was built into the foundation of Veronica Mars, but when Veronica was in high school, it often played out through Veronica's status as an outsider. She didn't fit in with the popular crowd, known as the 09ers, because of Keith's wrongful accusation of the Kanes in the wake of Lilly's (Amanda Seyfried) murder. But she also didn't fit in with the working class because of her former association with that same rich crowd. In 2019, with Veronica now in her 30s, the class warfare manifests itself differently. Veronica and Keith are still hustling to make ends meet as private eyes — Veronica is hesitant to take any job that won't pay them well and drives up their retainer whenever she can — but a pointed C-plot also finds Keith, who is still struggling in the wake of the car accident that occurred in the film, attempting to navigate our country's broken healthcare system as a member of the have-nots. It's familiar social commentary for the series, but it's perhaps even more relevant now than it was in 2004.
So when bombs start going off, putting many of the businesses that rely on local tourism in jeopardy, like a rowdy nightclub owned by Kirby Howell-Baptiste's Nicole, Veronica naturally starts digging. Technically she and Keith have been hired by the family of a congressman whose brother was injured in one of the bombings, but Veronica is interested in the case for other reasons too, namely Matty (Izabela Vidovic), the daughter of a divorced single father who dies in the first explosion. The show takes every opportunity to remind us Matty is a lot like a young Veronica, for better or worse.
The ensuing investigation, which plays out over the entire season, puts Veronica on a collision course with Penn Epner (Patton Oswalt), a local pizza delivery guy with a true crime obsession, as well as a few familiar faces from the original series. They include Weevil (Francis Capra), who's back in his criminal element after being framed by the sheriff's department in the film and taking an out-of-court settlement in Mr. Kiss and Tell, one of two canonical books published after the film; Leo (Max Greenfield), who now works for the FBI and continues to have sparks with Veronica; Vinnie (Ken Marino), whose office is a strip club because that's the logical next step after a van; and even Liam Fitzpatrick (Rod Rowland), who's still a scumbag and may or may not be involved in planting the bombs. Eventually, the case leads Veronica to none other than Big Dick Casablancas (David Starzyk), who seems to have suffered very little from his time in prison. Now cozied up to a man he met on the inside, Clyde (the always excellent J.K. Simmons), he's attempting to transform Neptune from a wild spring break destination into an elite and idyllic seaside community only the rich can afford.
This is a Veronica Mars that is both familiar and new. As Bell and Thomas promised, the new season is a different beast from the show that initially ran for three seasons on UPN and The CW in the mid-2000s. It's been described as more adult and as "hardcore So-Cal noir," and although it's difficult to imagine a scenario for Veronica that is worse than her own rape and the murder of her best friend as a teenager, the series somehow manages to go bigger and darker and create a more dangerous atmosphere, complete with increasingly dire consequences. In the process, it also evolves into a show about Veronica's emotional stagnation.
A running thread this season finds Logan pushing Veronica to go to therapy so she can hopefully begin to cope with her trauma rather than continuing to ignore it. He credits his therapist with helping him manage his anger — Logan might have evolved and matured during his time in the military, but he's still Logan — but Veronica repeatedly refuses, insisting she's fine. Of course, anyone with a working set of eyeballs can obviously see that Veronica is not fine, that she's been hardened by everything that has happened to her over the years and still suffers from the trust issues that have plagued her since her high school days. It's not entirely clear if Veronica is even happy working as a P.I. in Neptune or if that's just what she thinks she should be doing. All the same, Logan is determined to help Veronica, and after seeing plenty of men on TV struggle in this same way, seeing Veronica face these challenges instead is a welcome role reversal that still feels completely in character. In fact, everything that occurs between Logan and Veronica throughout the season is well done, completely thought out, and true to both characters.
But for all the good, and for all the fun it is to return to Neptune and watch Veronica continue to be smarter than everyone around her, the new season isn't without its faults. A major twist near the end of the season feels like it belongs in a different series entirely, like it was added more for shock value than anything else, and I worry about its lasting implications and how it might affect the possibility of another season. If it's an attempt by Thomas and the writers to convince Hulu to grant the series more episodes to explore the aftermath, it's a big swing, and not one I am sure will pay off.
It's unfortunate that one bad decision in a sea of good ones can so easily color the rest of a finished product, but there's a very good chance that is exactly what will happen for many fans. If they can get past it, there absolutely could be life left in Veronica Mars. For most of the season, the show is a lot of fun, balancing its well-honed sense of humor — many times at the expense of fan-favorite character Dick Casablancas (Ryan Hansen) — with Keith and Veronica's powerful family dynamic and a sometimes predictable but nevertheless engaging central mystery. There were many times throughout the season I found myself wishing Kristen Bell would never stop playing Veronica, that we never stop getting to spend time with what might be one of the best and weirdest supporting casts on TV after FX's Justified (another series I would kill to revisit in the future). And to an extent, I still feel that way; Veronica is one of the most competent characters on TV. After 15 years, she's now an old friend, and I'd rather spend time with her than most anyone else. But after these eight episodes, I also won't be surprised if this is the end of her story, and if it is, it's a somewhat disappointing one.
All eight episodes of Veronica Mars debut Friday, July 26 on Hulu.
