This month I wanted to feature an artist who runs their own small business and deserves more attention. Sonny’s art is steeped in pop culture, often featuring various actors and musicians of the 60s and 70s. Their colour palettes and little details also reflect this era, and their work featuring modern celebrities also carry this vintage feel. Their likenesses are captured in a stylistic way that is wonderfully creative and reflective of each individual.

It was Sonny’s work that first introduced me to the of power of Procreate and the and its tools with which you could give digital art some of the beloved and appealing qualities of traditional art. Using grainy paper textures, they build up the effect of dust and scratches which add a level of cosiness and warmth to their drawings, as if they were captured on film or printed in an old magazine.

The use of textures and patterns is integral to Sonny’s work and they layer many different kinds to bring a piece together in a collage-like way. Bold areas of pattern contrast the detailed lineart very well and a particular favourite of mine is the holographic paper they often use for portraits of glam and psychedelic rock musicians.

They are particularly known for creative fanart they make of the shows they love, often involving mashups and other references. Recently they have created Our Flag Means Death T-shirts in the style of Sonic Youth’s iconic Goo album artwork which, along with the matching holographic stickers, have been very popular.
