one of my absolute favorite conversations i have with random gentiles goes like this:
me: i face a lot of harassment and weirdness when i wear a kippah and star of david in public.
gentile: ok but u could just not wear them.
me: i mean yeah but i do.
gentile: but u could just not wear them and then ppl wouldn’t harass u and be weird to u.
me: yeah maybe but i do wear them.
gentile: but u have the option not to.
me: correct. but i choose the option to wear them.
gentile: but if u didn’t wear them then no one would know.
me: sure. but i do wear them.
and it goes round and round and round in a circle for like 20 minutes bc goyim cannot comprehend why i would not want to just shut up and assimilate.
anyway here’s ur reminder that telling ppl who are being oppressed or discriminated against to just hide whatever it is that people are targeting them for is contributing to said oppression and discrimination. forced assimilation is violence, and telling people “just don’t do/wear/say x thing that’s a core part of your identity” makes you complicit in that violence, if not actively a part of it.

MKcember Day 15: Shabbat and/or Kiddush Cup
———
There weren’t a lot of traditions Jake got to participate in. He wasn’t around most times, only Being for those stretches that Marc needed to be kept safe and Steven couldn’t handle. He had some memories—of times he drove for tense family dinners or in the aftermath of a bad Friday—but most of them were distant and loose, the warmth they held something to cherish quietly.
Nowadays he had even less time for active practice, Khonshu made sure of that. He hadn’t been present at synagogue in years, and most holidays he only remembered snacking on leftovers or catching the edges of a prayer while one of the others did the important shit. He slipped out sometimes in moments of overwhelm or… just sometimes, and he enjoyed that when he could, but it was inconsistent. Rocky.
Still, he tried to keep intentionality where he could. Small things, like choosing a Kosher option if it was available (though he was definitely more lax than Steven was), or keeping his hat in place when he was out (even if it wasn’t as traditional as a kippah). It may not have been much, but it mattered to Jake. Little things to keep hold of himself, to act and move as Jake Lockley, not just some moon lackey.
He had one big rule, though.
“Lockley.” Khonshu’s voice burst through the drapes, wind licking angrily throughout the room as he formed in the apartment. “What are you doing?”
Jake glanced back from his place at the counter, slippered feet shifting in place as he turned to face Khonshu. He smirked
“Hey, Big Bird. Here to take a load off?”
Khonshu tilted his head, the movement sharp and irritated. “I am here to collect you. You are not done with your mission. The sorcerer—”
“—Can wait ‘til tonight.” Jake nodded towards the stove. “I’m not missing out on Stevens hamin, you kidding? He hasn’t made this in… a few weeks. I think.”
“…What?”
“Clock slow? Aish, gotta wind that thing, man.” Jake got out a bowl and gestured briefly to Khonshu with the ladle before starting to serve himself. “It’s Shabbat,” he said, smiling.
There was a pause before he heard Khonshu sigh. Jake smiled wider to himself. The bird knew what that meant. No Knighting, no Mooning, no nothing, no matter how much of a fuss he made. Khonshu had tried to make Jake budge a few times in the past, but he’d stayed firm going on damned near a decade now.
This was the one day they really got to rest, got to step out from under Khonshu’s bony thumb and reclaim some of themselves, and Jake would be damned if he let the bird take that too.
“Be at the circle by midnight,” Khonshu said, the cold rush of his presence already receding. “I do not want this heretic to get away again.”
Jake hummed noncommittally, waving slightly over his shoulder as the curtains rustled again. Routine as it had gotten, he still felt a mix of relief and pride every time Khonshu backed off.
He carried a small tune under his breath as he set the lid back on the pot and moved towards the couch. He wasn’t sure if he’d actually be around to help Khonshu later. He was here now, and had been for most of the day, but that was out of the ordinary. Both Marc and Steven felt tired inside, neither active or awake, but that could change at any time, really.
For now, though, Jake had a busy day ahead. He’d spent the morning picking out books from Steven’s shelves, and was planning on working down the stack until he got tired enough to take a well needed nap. Maybe two, if he was feeling luxurious.
Jake felt warm as he settled into the couch, digging into the hamin as soon as he could and relishing the taste of well seasoned vegetables and grain. Steven was some kind of wizard with his vegan shit, he swore.
He cracked open his first novel of the day, thumb balancing between the pages, and let the light in his chest burn a little bit brighter.

Today I cut my hair really short (Omer starts in a few days) and was feeling really good and confident being masc-presenting (curls on top and undercut, kippah on, tzistzis untucked) until I had to go to the grocery store (the "kosher" location, frum neighborhood) for my Pesach shopping (three days until Pesach) was nervous (normally present very femme and sit on women's side) (what if people know me) but decided I wasn't going to let that anxiety intimidate me into hiding (still felt good) (whatever, people at least intellectually know I'm non-binary, it's good for them to see it sometimes)
Everything was going great until I needed to use the restroom (only men's and women's bathrooms) (no family bathroom) (waiting not an option) and was masc-presenting but also definitely not really passing? (not exactly binding, but also not not binding) (visible facial hair, but also extremely feminine glasses) and so I had to do some quick gender math (if I use the women's room, there are lots of frum women and girls here who might be freaked out, might call the cops) (if I use the men's room, there are lots of frum men and boys here, might get extremely awkward or hostile) (non-zero chance I run into someone I know and they recognize me despite being masc in either bathroom) (wait what if they don't recognize me? is that better or worse?) decided to use the men's room and accept whatever consequences (got in and out just fine) (b"h) this is exhausting and I'm so bad at math (but also I still look good so whatever)

Hi I’m sorry I don’t know if this has been talked about already but in OL1 there are a bunch of head covering options but not Kippah option. Would there be any possibility that a Kippah would be added into OL2
In a way that's effective, no, but not for lack of trying. One of the hats in there already was the attempt to add a Kippah. The problem is that the doll is entirely 2D and very simple in the details. There's not a way to make the hat layer over the head the way a Kippah does in real life. It just comes across like a regular hat over the forehead and no one can tell what it was meant to be, aha. It's because the MC doesn't have a round head to place the hat on top of, it's an entirely flat paper doll style piece. I'm sorry about that.

one of the things that baffles me most about anon is like. do you really think the jews AT PRIDE are going to be homophobic. are you going to see someone in a rainbow tallis wearing a trans flag kippah and think "surely they hate the queers." even if you've had experiences with jews being homophobic in the past, do you really think the jew actively and happily participating in pride who is probably also queer is homophobic? or do you just want an excuse to hate jews? (hint: it's option 2)
LITERALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
like babes!!!!!! if u see my faggy trans ass at pride with my top surgery scars out wearing a rainbow tallit and u think “they are clearly a homophobe!!!!!” u may just hate jews!!

hey, working on hybrid and I'm working on the option to let the player imply that they wear some sort of cultural covering (since I thought it would be weird to imply that Zed would normally not be covered, since there's a chance that that's not true and that on a normal basis, a camp full of strangers would not be welcome to look at Zed like that anyway). At the moment, Zed can choose between asserting that they're normally covered for cultural reasons, or to assert that it's not cultural (and therefore under normal circumstances, they wouldn't be wearing any special coverings). This is with the implication that Zed's just kind of dressed scummy right now, as they were just out in the woods foraging, so all their good clothes are functionally out of reach for them in favour of things that could be torn/soiled without fuss (so, fear not: a covered Zed is a fully covered Zed, just dressed like they're going to run errands in a barn).
Two questions, if anyone would like to volunteer answers:
Would anyone want me to give the option for Zed to not be covered for cultural reasons, but to still imply that they would be wearing some sort of coverings?
1 b) In which case, what would you want your Zed to normally wear? Keep in mind you don't have to specify any like, baseball caps or anything, this isn't a section where you're describing what you'd wear just to cover your body, this is for specific clothing items meant to cover you above and beyond just the bits.
2. Does anyone have any specific headscarves/hats they'd like included? I've currently got, based on complete outsider research, hijabs, niqaabs, shaylas, burqas, kerudungs, turbans, kippot (which I understand to be the plural of kippah, and although it doesn't necessarily provide the same coverage, I thought it should be included here?). This includes, obviously, situations where you might be referring to the same scarf by a different word (for multiple languages), because this is obviously to flesh out your Zed! My current list is as it is based on the criteria that it's not ceremonial (ie Zed wouldn't be wearing it all the time, and therefore it wouldn't be unusual to see Zed without it), and that it's not specifically for a group that Zed isn't a part of (by which I mean Zed, regardless of player choice, will not be married, and so some headscarves will not apply to them).
Thank-you, if you've got some answers you'd like to share 💚
