Adventures in Conlanging #1
How it¹ started:
Tumblr media
How it's going:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"It" being Classical Ngare n Tim Ar, the main focus language of my conworld/story setting Twin Aster. At top is the original writing system I devised fifteen-ish years ago. At bottom is some preliminary work on one of the current writing systems² I've devised for it, a hieroglyphic system à la, say, Egyptian in its heyday.
Yes, writing systems plural. There are four main ways to write CT (the "four modes", Höhsë ü gûrn Ahsaha), divisible into two pairs (eastalri, sg. gestalri): Gestalri n ḫisí (image-based) Sasaha n orón (color mode) – The OG system of Tim Ar writing, which saw a revival when Bleffys Údd came around and reëstablished the empire (though for everyday official purposes the sasaha n maḫneḫ was typically employed; see below). Sort of like Aztec hieroglyphs; color is meaningful and everything is little stylized drawings. Supplanted by other scripts and modes back in the day, it has seen a resurgence as a sort of blend of visual art, graphic design, calligraphy, and floriography. Sasaha n maḫneḫ (hieroglyphic mode) – Your bog-standard hieroglyphics, pictured in the lower two images above. Black-and-white (or, at least, color isn't usually a meaningful channel, unlike with the sasaha n orón). Essentially Egyptian with the serial glyphs filed off. Gestalri n oisog (cuneiform-based) Sasaha n Atki (Atskian mode) – Some upstart named Atki is credited with creating this in frustration after the eastalri n ḫisí were reserved for the upper crust. Originated from Monumental Khaya hieroglyphic phonetic complements. Sasaha n Lemhár (Levarian mode) – Sort of a calligraphic or stylized version of Atskian mode. No horizontal lines, and lines are canted by 30° from horizontal (left-to-upper-right diagonal), with individual blocks kind of sideways-stacked—think something like "////" for the layout, though each slash/block is much less vertical.

Hythlodaeus Kara
Born to the previous Azem, Venat, and her lover from a village she visited on her travels, Hythloaeus was not born in Amaurot. Instead, he was brought into the world in a small fishing village near the sea to the far north. His early years were spent being cared for by his father, Thaddeus. The fisherman did well to provide for his son while Venat was away. It was hard, given her duties, but they made it work.
Once Hythlodaeus was old enough to follow directions, the family started to travel together. This lasted a good few years until disaster struck while Vanet had been away from camp. A creature of magical nature came upon them. Through magic, teeth, and claw, it tore the camp apart. Thaddeus was able to buy enough time for Venat to get back, but the cost was his life.
The then nine-year-old had only just been starting to learn the healing arts from his father. Hythlodaeus attempted to raise his father, but inexperience and the creature's magic would prevent this. The backlash would also leave him unable to manipulate aether after that. No normal magic or creation magic, but his soul sight remained and almost seemed to be enhanced after that.
Vanet would run to her son once the beast was felled, and they would leave for Amaurote soon after for Hythlodeaus to be looked over. From then on, he would be left with Phobos at The Words of Emet-Selch when Venat had to travel. She often traveled, too, seeming to have little time for her son afterward. Part of this was her duties as Azem, and the other half was guilt over being unable to protect him.
It didn’t take long, perhaps a few years for the mother son bond to deteriorate into nothing. She no longer acted like a mother and Hythlodaeus no longer saw her as one. It was at this point that he stopped staying with her instead just staying with Phobos. It was easier, less painful for him. The scars would always remain though.
With Phobos he met many others whose parents were not the best. Enyo, Hades, there was also Harmonia, though her parents were what all parents should have arrived to be. They were by no means perfect, but they cared for her. Cicero and Khaya would have done anything for Harmonia. They were all friends and he would have done anything for them.
As the years passed, some among the friend group would take seats on the convocation. Hythlodaeus would find his own place even without the ability to use creation magic. His understanding of the theory behind it and his soul-sight made him perfect for a role at the Bureau of the Architect. There he would climb the ladder and become the director.
It was a few years after this around the time his mother stepped down as Azem that he found out he had a half brother. She had remarried and had another son. He was livid, but not with his brother. In all likely hood Dionysus didn’t even know that he existed. Though that was about to change.
Hythlodaeus had a concept on his desk belonging to his half-brother. And Ivey peacock concept that needed some mild tweaking. It was the perfect opportunity, and so it was taken. A meeting was arranged at a local establishment so they could talk over dinner. To say that he was nervous would have been an understatement.
It quickly became apparent that he had no need to be nervous. Dionysus was very receptive to it all. There was a bit of skepticism over what he said about their mother. Hythlodaues had admittedly expected that as it seemed she had learned from her previous mistakes. Part of him was glad to hear that she had become better. The other part was understandable miffed that she couldn't have learned sooner.
The pair parted ways and a few days later Hythlodaues was visited by Dionysus. It was unexpected and he could see that the other was upset. After Dionysus explained it was no wonder that he was upset. His brother had done his research finding everything that he had said the other day to be true. Only When Dion had confronted their mother she had fallen back on her olds ways and said that it was all a lie. That she had no other family and no other son.
All Hythlodaeus had been able to muster was a deep sigh. After that the two brothers had a long talk. It was a bonding moment and the pair have been thick as thieves ever since. Though, their mother did try to put an end to that. Even going so far as to try and ruin Hythlodaeus's good reputation. Something that the current Azem and his friend Hades put a stop too.
As time pasted the current Emet-Selch would also seek to step down. Hythlodaeus had not expected to be asked solely on the basis of his sight. Though he knew his was far better then his friends, there were so many deficits to deal with. He could not use magic at all and that also left him unable to transform. As much as Dions lessons with a bow were helping, he was still horrible in combat too. Still he would think on it.
That didn't last long as while in a garden he was soon face to face with the mother had had abandoned him. It would appear that she had decided he was the person to come rant to. Hythlodeaus simply smiled and let her rant. It was a public space and the last thing he needed was to be seen arguing with her. It would only make thing harder for himself and Dionysus.
So they walked through hte garden and he listened. He listened to her degrade Harmonia and point out every single one of her faults and say that these things made he unfit for the seat the Convocation had given. Why even name Harmonia as a second choice if you hated her so much? Then came the real reason she was beratuing his friend. Venat was angry that Dionysus had fallen flat when the convocation had interviewed him for the seat. His brother had been her first choice.
Tights fists shook slight at his sides as she now changed the subject. His eyes squeezed shut as he berated the current Emet-Selch for having such a useless first choice. How he inability to use magic had cost his father his life. The words she spoke echoed in his mind for days after. and in the end they had caused him to turned down the seat and nominate Hades.
Your own mother can't stand to look at you, what makes you think the city will want to have you?
Years would pass and he would continue with his work. He would be the rock for his friends and his brother. Despite their mother and her two face ways, Dionysus was not the cause of his suffering. No, that was Venat and one day she would get what was coming to her. It was just going to take time.
Time however turned out to be short as the Final Days came. Hythlodaeus had at first been dead set on being a part of the summoning. Both his friends would be a part of it and this was the part he was going to play. Yet, on the day of he came to stark realization. If he did this. If he left them like this he would be no better then his mother. He managed to stumble off to Theriposa without anyone noticing. There is was Phobos that hid him away until the world was sundered by his mother.

From @krizzakrizza / @idaida! This gorgeous comm of my prickly Rhoslinn and Jenn’s lovely Khaya, our night bloom salad girlfriends. Gotta stretch to give your tol gf a kiss, Khaya.
Rhos and Khaya had a kind of rocky start, since Rhoslinn almost fell to nightmare, but now that that’s behind them, they’ve started traveling together again, and it’s working out well for both of them.
Our girls look so lovely and I’m immensely happy with this! Worth every cent!
