#kevin: you guys fucking suck at exy

sibling dynamic foxes is the best thing ever and no its not a headcanon this is canon to me.
like the foxes and Kevin? siblings if I ever saw any. They would relentlessly bully Kevin and Kevin would just bully them back but the moment anyone tries talking shit about either of them it's absolute hell.
Reporter 1: Kevin, what do you think about the Foxes as a team? I'm sure they can't compare to your old team, The Ravens and Ri-
Kevin Day best Exy player in the league, holding his Exy racquet like a weapon: the fuck did you just say to me?
or
The foxes: man FUCK Kevin
some exy hating loser: yeah screw that guy
Bisexual defender Allison holding enough money in her pocket to end their life: No. You don't get it.
NOT JUST THEM are you guys trying to tell me Matt and Nicky aren't best friends? Are you telling me they don't have gossip Fridays where they share everything together whilst Dan listens in on them. Are you telling me Nicky doesn't read the upperclassmen to filth about their fashion sense (except Allison who joins in on making fun of them).
And of course we have the twinyards (YES THEY HEAL IDC NORA CAN CHOKE ON AN EXY STICK) and they're fucking dickheads to each other its insane. The first few months everyone's slightly on edge but then they realise its all bark and no bite.
Andrew: I'm going to stab you.
Aaron: Do it coward
Andrew: *jabbing him with a mechanical pencil*
Aaron: Fine, not so much of a coward I guess.
Oh and the foxes 1000000% make fun of Neil for living in Britain. They're constantly talking to him in a British accent and when the Queen died they all showed up in his room offering gifts of condolences.
"This is a hard time for you, we understand if you need space but we'll always be here for you."
"It'll get better buddy trust me."
"It's better if you cry and get it out now, we know how important she was to you."
They also make sleepover nights mandatory. The first few years they just had the og foxes let into the dorms but after they all graduated Kevin made a whole separate room just for the foxes where they have sleepovers. It's decked out with beanbags, weighted blankets, stuffed animals and his favourite photos of the Foxes printed out and framed and a TV.
He says Jeremy picked it out but secretly it was all him and he would rather die than let them find out. Somehow they did (Jeremy ratted him out) and Kevin's nickname was permanently changed to softie. No they did not secretly feel giddy with happiness, no they didn't think this was the best thing Kevin Day has ever done absolutely not.

no but jean IS such a bitchy brother in law. he’s that guy the whole family inherits and can’t question in front of kevin but by god they don’t get it. picturing them being bitchy together forever is my favorite thing. i have this scene in a fic im working on where kevjean are older and graduated and visit wymack like a few times a year and they spend the whole evening glaring at the foxes from the kitchen window drinking wine. that is just so who they are to me
THEY ARE SO VERY LIKE THIS IT’S SCARY. i think it’s jean’s general guest star vibe that makes him so brother-in-law-coded. the foxes are always so very aware that he is not one of them. yes most of the other foxes date non-foxes but they don’t date EXY PLAYERS from OTHER TEAMS. as far as they are concerned jean moreau is enemy of the state number one until renee marries some fucking guy from the peace corps. after that jean is enemy of the state number two
do you know those tweets that are like “friends boyfriend is basically a subhuman species”? this is what it feels like to date a member of the foxes when you yourself are not part of the team. no one cares about your opinion about anything in the history of ever. you are tolerated the way circus animals are tolerated. you know that without a doubt these people would throw you under the bus if there was a zombie apocalypse. i need jean katelyn and erik to have a groupchat just the three of them like that one episode of modern family where the aggregated members of the prichetts manipulate the family into chosing italy for their summer vacation
dan: the ORIGINAL psu foxes have come into an agreement that this year the family is going to….. ITALY!
jean katelyn and erik who have spent the entire past year bringing italian dishes to group events and discreetly sneaking italian media into their homes: omg noooooooo :( you guys fucking suck :( we have no voting rights :(

Some Things You Just Can't Bury by permanentchaos for Dancyon [Rated T, 7492 Words, Complete, AFTG Exchange 2017]
There are memories. Things that flood his subconscious, overwhelming him until he can no longer work out the fact from fiction. Neil Josten was never just Neil Josten, he has been any number of people starting with Nathaniel Wesninski.
Nathaniel Wesninski is dead, or so he likes to think. There are no more lies, or truths for that matter, that connect him to this reality. Except one. Nathaniel Wesninski swore he would take it to his grave, and he passed that mantle on to Neil Josten. Secrets, lies...truths, they all have a cost. Some things you just can’t bury.

Time’s up, Junior.
Indeed. Indeed it was. For who though, Nathaniel was unsure. All he knew for certain that the blood on the wall was still wet, not yet tacky which meant that he wasn't too far behind his fathers trail. He would catch up to him, this he knew with single-minded determination and it would either end in his death or his fathers. Maybe both. One way or another though, he would finish this.

Or, Neil never ends up going back to Baltimore. Instead, his father comes to Palmetto.

You Are So Much More Than Your Father's Son by phan_taloon [Rated T, 3143 Words, Complete, 2021]
It wasn’t rare for Neil to end up at the library, taking up an entire table all by himself with piles of books and half-finished assignments. It turns out, he doesn’t do a very good job of finishing his homework at the dorm now that he lives with Andrew and Kevin. Between talking exy with Kevin, and hanging out with Andrew (more of the latter obviously), he had too many distractions. The best way to get shit done is to come to the library where the other Foxes rarely come (except for Aaron but they aren’t really friends yet, although not for lack of trying, they just didn’t click), so he’s safe from distractions.
But this time he can’t focus, not with the two guys a few tables to his right, talking softly amongst themselves and giggling and nervously looking Neil’s way.

things the foxes have done in college somewhat inspired by my endless exhaustion because the semester is almost over and idk how to survive the next three weeks
neil josten does not care about having good grades. his priorities are andrew, exy, his foxes, sleep, and his studies, ni matter how much he enjoys math. he falls asleep in class, turns in assignments late, doesn't participate in discussions... how is he passing you ask? no one knows to be honest, not even him, all that matters is he can play exy and occasionally do fun math things
aaron once went an entire school week with only 7 hours of sleep because he had too many things to study plus exy practices (-450/10 would NOT recommend), how he managed to play that friday without collapsing is a wonder and an awe to all the foxes
the girls do study dates, in which they all agree to be at the dorm or library at the same time to do homework or study, which almost always turn into a night out having dinner or doing something fun instead of studying
nicky tends to procrastinate and suddenly he has to read an entire 200 page book in one night for a test he's had in his schedule for two weeks, when this happens and he has to stay up late, he takes little naps between chapters, as a treat <3 but he does finish doing whatever he needs because he's a good student
kevin has an... unorthodox method of doing his homework, and the thing is he'd rather die on the weekend doing absolutely everything that needs to be done the following week than having to finish any assignment or having to study for a test in the middle of the week so he can dedicate his time to exy
matt may be a sociable guy, but if there's one thing he can NOT do is study in groups, which sucks because he likes being around people, but he gets too distracted and falls in the ropes of helping others study instead of studying himself, so there's a rule that matt must study alone 90% of the time
related to this, once things settle down between the upperclassmen and the monsters, they once made the mistake of leaving nicky and matt to study together... let's just say it was a mistake
andrew is also a procrastinator at heart, no one is sure they have ever seen him study or do homework, but he does everything at night because he doesn't sleep anyway, and it's easy to write papers and study when you remember everything you've read and heard before
dan is the kind of student to put her all into her notes, they're organized and pretty and color coded
allison shows up in class with her notebook and a black and a blue pen exclusively, she may be THE allison reynolds, but her notes are a fucking mess with scribbles in the sides, smudged pen ink, weird little diagrams no one understands but her, because she's done trying to be anything but her most chaotic self
similarly, kevin's notes are a fucking mess of english, french and the occasional japanese because he may be receiving his classes in english, but he tries to synthesize his lectures in his own words and ends up writing a multilingual puzzle
look i don't know a single med student who doesn't have a love/hate relationship with their choices, so it's the week before finals, aaron has a thousand projects and papers to give in but he just doesn't know how anymore, and he's just so tired he could cry, and he's just 'can i really do medicine? is this really worth it?' and it's like 4 am and he's just so tired he feels the craving of the drugs again, but andrew never sleeps anyway, so he's just there in the living room reading a book next to his exhausted twin in silent support. aaron may still feel tired and hesitant when he's done an hour or two later, but knowing that andrew was there made things better
in contrast, neil gives a look to all the things he has to do that same week and pulls everything off in one night, no one knows how he does this, but he does it and he fucking nails it

heres the thing
like, baltimore happened. right? right.
but like, absolutely none of the foxes believe that andrew and neil are together. like romantically. (it’s mildly plausible that they could have sexual relations with one another but it’s literally only allison that thinks that, and even she’s doubtful.)
(renee is the only outlier here but she doesn’t comment on any of it because she doesnt have a death wish because she’s andrew’s friend)
(maybe also aaron but he thinks they just fuck)
what with neil’s insistence on not swinging and andrews... andrewness, it makes no sense that they’d actually be together
they never touch whatsoever. no kissing (no evidence of kissing), no hugging, no hand-holding, nothing. not even an accidental bumping of knees between the two of them.
kevin refuses to talk to them about the topic, but nicky is a very talkative person. “I live in the same dorm as them. but i’ve never seen anything even slightly coupley.”
even allison is beginning to doubt herself.
by their second year most of the foxes have come to the conclusion that they just said it to get the foxes out of neil’s love life and to make them tolerate andrew at least a little more
like, of course they think that neil and andrew are friends, at least, no one could get that close to the little knife-wielding maniac andrew and not have some sort of connection
also they talk to each other a lot. andrew hardly talks to anyone else. the foxes interpret that as they
but they kind of just brush it aside until it’s new year’s eve and all of the original foxes are there (because they’re not letting neil leave them again)
andrew and neil are off smoking and nicky’s like “okay guys a new bet.”
so nicky thinks that they’re together, full stop (because he’s lived with andrew for years he knows that he shows his affection differently).
aaron thinks they’re just fucking and so does allison (one of the few times they have ever agreed on anything)
matt, dan, and kevin all think that they’re just close friends (because kevin is probably thinking about their exy careers and also the internalized homophobia that the nest drilled into him for years is still there)
renee isn’t a part of it (obviously)
and so the bet finally begins
neil and andrew probably know about it, but they also have no idea who thinks what and they also don’t really care. they know. that’s all that matters. they’re a very private people.
none of the freshman even know that andrew and neil are together in the first place, so they definitely don’t know about the bet
so the foxes start watch andrew and neil just a little bit more closely but they’re still not seeing anything different than how they acted before they were ‘out’
it isn’t until the next october that they get anything
they’re all in the girl’s suite (now only dan and allison, renee graduated the year before)
it’s all of the foxes, the new freshmen and the now-sophomores (bonding exercise, dan told neil. you’re all gonna be there) and all of the original ones
they’re all hanging out and some people are chatting but it’s kinda lame
so allison’s like “fuck it, we’re all playing never have i ever.”
they establish things such as if you feel uncomfortable revealing anything you don’t have to, no singling people out, etc
so the game begins and there’s the usual tame questions like “never have i ever skateboarded” and such
but it slowly delves into the more revealing things, like “never have i ever broken the law” (and nearly all of the foxes drink because they’re foxes)
but jack, the asshole, goes “never have i ever sucked dick”
nicky, obviously take a big gulp. and allison, dan, matt (”what?? i was experimental in high school”), andrew, kevin (everyone kinda knows about the hookup culture that the nest had, so whatever), and many of the freshmen and sophomores drink as well. and, astoundingly, so does neil
nicky literally gasps, allison coughs on her drink, the rest of the original foxes simply gape (except for kevin, who swears loudly) because there was no one that neil would give a blowjob to besides andrew
neil, completely unblushingly, goes “what?” at all of his speechless friends (except for kevin, who is still swearing. it was only twenty dollars that he lost, but still). andrew, next to him, has the same bored expression
so matt, kevin, and dan have already lost the bet, even if it’s still going strong
but eventually they’re all like okay yeah, whatever, they’re fucking, but that’s it
except nicky
so it basically all of the foxes trying to get neil (not andrew, andrew’s scary) that it’s a fwb thing without explicitly asking outright
but every time matt asks how his thing with andrew is going he just kinda shrugs and goes back to what he was doing because it hasn’t really changed much except they trust each other a lot more, both emotionally and physically but neil’s not gonna tell anyone that
so allison’s like “got any dick recently?” and neil’s like”???? yeah?? i guess???”
but suddenly it’s andrew’s fifth year and nearly all of the original foxes have graduated and the bet is still there, obviously, but it’s come to the point that if they stay together after andrew graduates then nicky’s right and he wins the bet
but it’s before that that shit goes down
so it’s spring break, and they’re all at the cabin that they went to that first time (i like to think that it becomes a tradition and no matter what, all the foxes are there every year)
so  it’s the third night and things are... tense
it’s not that andrew and neil are being quiet, since they usually don’t talk a lot, but the air around them seems charged, like a bomb about to go off
they’re all gathered around, sitting on assorted furniture or the floor, and their all conversing quietly and dan gets up, grabs an assorted but large selection of alcohols, and sets them on the coffee table, declaring that they’re going to play drinking games and absolutely no one can sit out (glaring pointedly at neil, who looks ready to bolt. he hasn’t had that expression on his face for years. they all hate it.)
it is, again, during a game of never have i ever, when things come to a crescendo
they’re all mildly tipsy at this point of the night, and neil and andrew are sitting on the same loveseat, but nearly as far away from each other as possible (they’re still playing, since dan insisted, and despite her having not been their captain for two years, she is still mentally their captain)
allison, because she felt emotional or it’s just the alcohol, goes “never have i ever been in love”
and dan and matt share dopey smiles as they both drink, aaron drinks, nicky stares off into space while drinking, thinking only of erik, and kevin takes a hesitant sip from his
its silent for a full second before neil, with a determined look on his face, looks andrew in the eye and takes a huge mouthful of the alcohol and swallows
no one says anything either from knowing better than to say anything or being physically incapable of speech
neil and andrew maintain eye contact before andrew, andrew, picks up his own drink and drains his glass
as if rehearsed, they both get up at the same time and storm outside onto the deck, slamming the door and shaking the paintings on the walls
it’s a terse silence as they hear faint voices arguing but it isn’t until they fall silent that kevin gets up to investigate but then immediately goes to sit back down after one glance out of the window
he picks up a bottle of vodka and drinks directly from it before going “they’re fine”
“how do you know?” matt asks tentatively
“because they’re making out”
the room is silent again, surprise coloring the air
and then
“pay up, bitches”
Nicky is very pleased upon knowing that his cousin actually does have someone to love and so does neil his adopted son but also that he won six hundred dollars (”I never should have fucking bet that much” allison muttered later)
and for the rest of their vacation everyone’s happy and fine and dandy and they all ignore those hickeys on andrew’s neck

aftg as cliche high school au
i got bored and was wondering how the foxes would work in american high school stereotypes and now i’m here so. yeah ignore it if it sucks <3
neil would of course be the popular-kid-who-doesn’t-wanna-be-popular
depending on who you are he could either be really nice to you or the biggest fucking asshole
he’s on the cross country team as well as soccer w kevin (duh)
he mainly hangs out w other ‘popular kids’ like matt allison seth dan and occasionally the vixens but like only because his group knows them
he also vibes with renee occasionally
andrew would be the quiet kid who’s actually an asshole especially to teachers and reads during class is that a stereotype? i think so
he’s also probably a gamer kid and he wears a bunch of rings yes youll see
i’ll get more about him later
aaron is that kid in biology who’s got an A+ throughout the whole class and it annoys the shit out of everyone because that shouldn’t be possible
kevin is a jock. yes he is
he plays soccer and does cross country (can you do those both at the same time) (i’m not a sports person)
(let’s say yes for the sake of this)
he’s also one of those history nerd kids
you know who i’m talking about
nicky is a theater kid and he can actually sing really well
he just never stops
he knows he’s good at singing but it’s annoying walking out of math every day hearing a random song
seth and matt are both jocks and best friends (besides neil) but there are significant differences about them
yes they both were highlighters during middle school but that’s besides the point
seth is one of those kids who during gym is always like “dOnT bE a sOrE LoSeR” whenever your team loses but when his team loses he’s a pissbaby talking about how you cheated and just e w
he also has pot brownies in the middle of class
he probably asks you for answers for the homework too
matt just vibes and probably accidentally hits the volleyball too hard but everyone loves him anyway
he absolutely sucks at most classes and will absolutely be like “ohHHH thank youu :D” when you help him like literally the puppy eyes give you no choice but to help him
allison is the regina. fuckin george of school
but like if you guys end up sitting together during chemistry and you aren’t a complete dickhead to her she’ll probably give you candy or just whatever she has on her
renee is quiet girl whos actually got good grades and popular girl (allison) highkey has a crush on her
dan is like middle ground like shes a sports girl
but shell willingly hang out with both quiet kids and popular kids
overall really nice
OKAYOKAY NOW
neil ended up getting set up with one of the vixens marisa
(i think that was that girl who neil took to the banquet and was like "why do i need your number" to ?)
anyways he keeps trying to be like "no." over and over but she simply Wont Have It
and then next thing you know hes running for homecoming king and hes this close to breaking his own arm to get out of it
so now. he has to find an outfit
meanwhile Quiet Goth™ andrew minyard and his twin brother aaron have their dad who has a fashion business (mom died in a catastrophic car crash)
and everyone knows this so theyre always asking for like. help and discounts and shit
he says no to all of them
except neil whos in need of an outfit and
very very pretty
like uhh who gave you the r i g h t to have that awkward smile ???
and those t h i g h s ?
so andrews like "eh whatever sure"
yes yes yes yes
and. they end up getting kind of close ?
it kind of astounds everyone
aaron hates it he has calculus with neil and neil has the audacity to be so good at math and just so happens to be the only person andrew helps ?
seth is confused because andrews the only person he cant beat in a good one v one of exy
but also andrew buys a bunch of pot brownies from him and ???? he doesnt know why bc he doesnt even look high most of the time
he gives them to security guards as bribery so he can keep his knives on him during school
and now neils just friends w him ????
and its going well
"so you don't wanna be popular" "...yeah" "then dont"
neil retorts with:
"so your telling me your dad runs a fashion business and you wear all black"
they go back and forth for like half an hour
andrew starts trying to teach neil how to play videogames
neil fucking sucks but he doesnt really care because andrews nice
and actually helping neil pick out his outfit is a fucking pain because he so pretty picky
andrew dies
anyways
neil starts opening up about how he doesnt actually like marisa and andrews like "tell her"
"i hav she just doesnt. listen >:("
andrew offers to but neil knows about the frog knives (yes the frog knives) and hes like hah nice try
they still have nights on the roof and cigarettes and secrets shared
so everything happens and it finally gets to marisas head that neil doesnt wanna go to homecoming (with her. that is)
its like 4 days before homecoming and he jsut snaps
"yaknow i get it—"
she ends up crying but neil doesnt care at this point shes finally off his back
lets face it he would not care that man has zero morals
and so its homecoming night and neils this close to simply Not Going
but matt and seth are on the football team and they have their game and he spent hours looking for a suit
so he goes to the game and he hangs out with the upperclassmen
deliberately avoids the team because theres ways vixens nearby and he cant deal with marisa rn
so he hangs out
he sees aaron in the stands and asks if andrews around aaron just shrugs
useless
and the games over matts team wins yay !!!
everyones happy
now its time for the dance
neils dreading it
he goes and tries to avoid the general public because Ew People
and he sees andrew hiding from the noise in a hallway with no people
theyre quiet until neil follows andrew out to the back of the school and to the middle of the empty soccer field
"you werent at the game"
andrew shrugs "i didnt care about the game"
"and you care about the dance?"
"aaron doesnt have his own car"
"mhm"
andrew rolls his eyes
its quiet and neils just looking at andrew
he kinda had a realization the other night with matts help
andrew simply stares back
"yes or no"
"yes"
kith :)
the school doesnt notice they’re a thing until andrew shows up to school one day wearing what may or may not be one of those wrist. sweatband thingies
im dumb i forgot what theyre called
and neil always has one of andrews rings on him and hes always fidgeting with it
anyways i might write a fic who knows not me❤️

How does Kevin react when he meets Dalton’s friends? How do they react to him?
OOOOO THIS IS FUN
so let’s introduce dalton’s friends to YOU GUYS first.  i’ll give a little description of each to help visualize the gang
jenna.  short, childhood friend but lived across him and his roommate freshman year of college.
emmie.  tall, idk met at a party or smth it’s college cmon u can become friends w ppl bc of anything
sam.  average height idk u choose, freshman year roommate.
nate.  average height, became friends 3 yrs ago?  maybe they’re in graduate school tg.
reid.  tall, became best friends sophomore year.
reid and jenna are his closest friends.  jenna is very protective of her little (big.  very big.  she’s literally 5′2 and barely reaches his shoulder bc he’s literally 6′4 pls) baby dalton.  she’s kind of like an andrew except she’s not a violent shortie she’s just a very energetic shortie.
kevin doesn’t meet them until october, when they’ve been together for a month.  at this point he hasn’t told dalton about his abuse and his past, and he’s hoping to god that dalton’s friends don't bring up riko or the ravens.
they don’t.  thank god.
mainly because the first time he meets them is at an exy game.  he and dalton have been dating for three weeks by then, and like always, kevin had offered his family seats to them.
he comes around before warm ups, and dalton grins.  “hey.”  kevin leans over to hug him.  he props his racquet up.  “are these your friends?”
“in the flesh!”  a short girl at his side pipes up.  “not gonna lie, i don’t know how dalton scored someone on a sports team.”
“especially kevin day- i mean, sorry, dude, but you’re fuckin awesome.”  jenna elbows another boy, nate, at her side.  kevin remembers him from the first game dalton came to.  “what?”
“you’re embarrassing.”
“it’s fine.”  kevin purses his lips.  “what are you doing after?”
dalton shrugs.  “i think just going jenna and em’s after this.  will you come?”
kevin nods.  “if we win.”
“if you wanna stay over tonight, you’ll win.”  dalton raises an eyebrow.  emmie reaches around one of the boys and punches his arm.
“gross!  i heard that!”
when kevin leaves, the group all despite dalton and emmie are left a little open mouthed.  emmie is just as clueless about sports as dalton is, and while none of them besides reid have really gone to an exy game at their school (because they’d sucked for so long), they all agree they’ll be going from then on.  reid collapses in his seat.  “i can’t believe my best friend is dating kevin day.”  he grabs dalton’s arm.  “dude... you’re dating kevin day.  how the fuck did you not realize that when you met him?!”
dalton shrugs with a grin.
nate snorts.  “imagine how i felt when dalton just goes oh, wanna go to the exy game with me to see my boyfriend?  and then his boyfriend is kevin day.”
emmie pats dalton’s arm.  “it’s okay, bud.  i still don’t know who he is.”
and the three boys, sam reid and nate, all lean forward to look at her.  “what?”
_______________
they win.  by a lot.
kevin isn’t nervous about going to the girls place until he’s walking up and knocking on the door.  his friends have to like him.  if they don’t, that’s five against one, and he really doesn’t want to lose dalton yet.
jenna answers the door, nearly half his height, and side hugs him.  “kevin!  kevin’s here!  oh my god, you guys did so good tonight- hey, is neil josten single?”  what?
“uh, no, he's taken.”
jenna pouts, but then dalton shows up around the corner to wisk his boyfriend away.  “okay, so my friends are all kind of drunk right now, so we don't have to stay if it makes you uncomfortable.”
but there’s not much anymore that sways him, so they stay.  dalton sticks to his side because he's also drunk, and sam at one point reigns him in to play beer pong.  sam drinks for both of them.  he almost passes out on the couch afterwards.
reid, who hadn’t said a word to him all night, calls him over after their game.  he throws an arm around kevin's shoulder.  “dalton’s my best friend, yeah?  that means when something bad happens to him, i feel like i kinda feel it, too.  he can be a gentle soul, so he gets it bad.  that being said, me and my girlfriend broke up two months ago, and i really don’t wanna have to go through another heartbreak any time soon.  do you see where i’m getting at?”
if this wasn’t one of dalton’s friends, he’d laugh a little.  reid isn’t too intimidating.  he’s seen worse.  “i’m not going to break his heart.”
reid claps his shoulder and lets his arm drop.  “good.  if you did, i’d have to kill ya.”
kevin thinks he’d end up okay.  he nods, and joins his boyfriend again.
the next day, dalton sends him a text after practice.  my friends approve of u mr. kevin day
well thank god
aha funny, jenna’s meeting me for lunch.  wanna join?
send me a time and place mr. dalton miller
okay not my best one, i’m not gonna lie i didn’t know exactly where i wanted this to go LOL.  overall, kevin doesn’t get that nervous when meeting people that he doesn’t think will make a difference.  and when they’re people who could make a difference, for example in his relationship, he has this tendency to not think into it until the last second, leaving himself feeling underprepared.  but he makes out well with dalton’s friends.  mainly because at first they’re impressed with him bc of exy, but then eventually because they genuinely think and know he’s good with dalton.

Aaron wasn‘t gone for too long when Kevin‘s phone rang
He didn‘t have the energy to pick it up, just to stare it down as if some kind of magic or his sheer will power would make it stop, let him be alone with his thoughts
But obviously that didn‘t work, it never did
The phone kept ringing, slowly driving the striker mad, slowly taking his sanity.
It would be the fifth or sixth missed call that would make him get up to answer the phone
„KEVIN HI NICKY HERE, LISTEN I TRIED TO CALL YOU FOR THE PAST HALF HOUR OR SO BUT AARON‘S IN THE HOSPITAL AND I CAN‘T GET THERE UNTIL LIKE TOMORROW AND ANDREW DOESN‘T ANSWER HIS PHONE EITHER AND HE WOULD TAKE LIKE HOURS TO GET THERE AS WELL CAN YOU PLEASE GO TO HIM SO HE DOESN‘T HAVE TO BE ALONE I DON‘T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED PLEASE, KEVIN I NEVER ASKED FOR ANYTHING FROM YOU PLEASE JUST GO AND MAKE SURE MY SON IS OKAY“
„Nicky? Hi to you too. You do realize he isn‘t my responsibility and that he broke up with me and that I don‘t really have to go there. I don‘t own him shit. He made my life miserable. He probably deserves whatever happened to him“ was what Kevin wanted to answer, was probably what he was supposed to say. But deep down he knew it was not true, that Aaron never ruined his life. Made it better, made it it bareable. Made it worth living, not just existing. Made it more than Exy and Vodka.
After a few moments of silence that felt like an enterinity Kevin settled for a simple: „Which hospital?“
„OH DIO MIO GRACIAS, MUCHAS GRACIAS. ESTÁ EN EL CHICAGO HOSPITAL“, Nicky replied in Spanish. Something the Latino only did when he was either very emotional, very drunk, very angry or all at once.
Kevin didn‘t have it in him to tell Nicky that he still did not speak Spanish, he understood the hospital and that was enough. For now.
„I‘m on my way, call you later and Nicky? He‘s going to be fine. It‘s not your fault. You‘re a great mother to them, the best I‘ve ever had the pleasure to meet. Now calm down, go to Erik and take a nap. You don‘t have to come, he‘s with us. We got this. Do you want to talk to Jeremy while I go to check up on Aaron?“
„Sí“, was all Nicky had to say. Voice thick with tears.
„JER CAN YOU TALK TO NICKY AARON‘S IN THE HOSPITAL I‘M GOING THERE“, Kevin shouted into the flat.
„Absoloutly“, Jeremy replied and took the phone from Kevin.
„Mi corazón, escúchame“, was the last thing Kevin heard as it hit him. Aaron was in the hospital. Right after Kevin refused to listen to him, right after Kevin refused to let him explain himself. It was Kevin‘s fault. If Aaron died, he would have killed him. He was basically a murderer. His breathing came out uneven, his lungs didn‘t get enough air. He knew that he needed to breathe, but breathing was hard and he was weak.
Jean noticed Kevin having a panic attack when he came to check up on him. „Day, listen to me. Breathe. In... And out... In.... And out... In... And out“
Kevin‘s breathing got better, slowly but steadily.
„It‘s my fault“, the striker whispered.
„It‘s not, Kevin. It is not your fault. If you don‘t want to go there, you don‘t have to. He is not your responsibility“
„Hypothetically if Jeremy was to break up with you and you‘re hurt and sad and blame him for your misery when it‘s more the lack of him that makes you feel that way and his sister or brother or mother or whoever would call you and hysterically asked you to go look after him cause his family is stuck on another continent and the only other person who could call refuses to take the phone cause they‘re too busy doing their boyfriend, would you not go cause he is not your responsibility anymore? Because Aaron is my Jeremy. Just like Jer saved your life and made you see that live is indeed worth living, Aaron showed me the same“
„I don‘t think I would surive Jeremy leaving me, you‘ve always been stronger than me. Should I give you a ride?“, Jean whispered.
„It‘s not a thing of strenght Jean, it‘s an addiction. It used to be alcohol that made me forget, made me feel light and free and carefree. I drank and drank until I couldn‘t live without it anymore. And then I met Aaron, I tasted him, I smelled him and he chose me. Me? What did I have to offer him? A boy broken and raised by Exy. All I can offer is Exy. Nothing more. Until he made me see that it was wrong, that I am more than that. And he might have broken my heart and yes I might still love him even though he will never feel the same but I cannot not go there. I have to. I have to be there for them, the way he was always there for me“
„Get your things, we‘re going to the hospital“, Jean replied, unable to put his emotions into words.
So Jean and Kevin left for the hospital while Jeremy tried to calm Nicky down with softly whispered Spanish words.
As they arrived at the hospital Kevin stormed in there.
„Aaron Minyard“, was all he was able to say. Too many memories were connected with hospitals. Too many memories he would much rather just forget.
„Name?“, the nurse said in a bored tone.
Kevin just put a finger on his cheek.
„Kevin Day? I can‘t let you to him, only family and spouses“
„What if I sign something, we take a nice selfie and you tell me where he is. You see I‘m basically family. I‘m the closest and the others can‘t be here until at least tomorrow evening and we don‘t want the poor guy to be all alone and confused, do we?“, Kevin said with his press smile and shining eyes. He knew the charme he had on females. It was just not useful for him as he never really was into that. He never was into anyone but Aaron, to be fair.
„I could lose my job for that“, the nurse replied, her eyes wandering from his eyes to his lips and up again.
„I‘m sure I can offer you something that will you let me to go see him“, Kevin replied with a wink, being disgusted by himself that he even thought about all the possiblities this woman could ask him to do with her.
„Room 21, second floor, station E. You clearly care about him, if anyone asks it wasn‘t me“, she smiled at him. „Besides I always liked Moreau more, I‘m sure we can think of something to do while you are with the boy“
„Sorry“, Kevin whispered to Jean as he ran down the aisle trying to figure out where Aaron was.
The hostpital was a mess of busy nurses and angry doctors, but nothing could stop a determinded Kevin Day. No one. Not even Andrew Minyard.
After what felt like forever he made it to the room, kicked the door open and walked with three long strides to Aaron.
„You fucking idiot, what have you done?“, he whisper-shouted, holding back tears while taking in Aaron‘s sorry state.
„I don‘t need your fucking pity“, Aaron replied, exhausted.
„Did you tell them you can‘t have morphine? Because you might relapse, i mean you already did but we don‘t want it to get worse. And this is not pity, this is Nicky yelling at me in Spanish cause you‘re in the hospital and he‘s in Germany and I‘m the closest to you and he does not want his son to be alone“
„Andrew didn‘t care to come, did he?“, Aaron whispered into his pillow.
„Andrew does care about you he‘s just shit at showing it, that fucking asshole“, Kevin replied softly. „C‘mon what have you done Minyard?“
„Car accident, not that it‘s any of your fucking business“
„How are you?“
„Fucking great, I should let a truck drive into me more often. Very freeing. Very calming“, Aaron said sarcastically, avoiding Kevin‘s eyes.
„A truck. Drove into you?“, shock made Kevin‘s Irish accent stronger.
„Not that you would care“, Aaron‘s voice was barely more than a whisper as he turned around, back to Kevin.
„Aaron first of all I can see you naked ass and not that I wouldn‘t mind the view and I‘ve seen it often enough but the nurses don‘t have to see that too. And secondly of course I care. I always did. Always will“
Blushing Aaron turned back towards Kevin.
„Why wouldn‘t you listen to me if you care so much? You‘re exactly like like Andrew, you guys only ever care when I‘m about to die or do something that doesn‘t sit right with you. Never about me as a person. The conecept about me maybe, but me? Me as a person? No one cares about that“
„You are Aaron Minyard. Born on the 4th of November, 8:31:45 am. You grew up in California in the house next to Nicky. Nicky and you were always close and you didn‘t have many friends because of your mom. Your mom might have abused her and I might hate her for that but you still love her and I get that because on some fucked up level I still care about Riko. You are allergic to cats, peanuts and house dust. You have a freckle right on your right hip, under your navel, from under your left eye over to the nose to the corner of your right eye. You like it when you are hold when you can‘t sleep but you hate showing affection in public. You were 13 when you started exy, because it gave you an escape, but you had to stop because the bruises from your mother‘s beating got to obvious. So you started getting into medicine. You borrowed every single book on medicine you could find and read it at night, always hidden from your mom. You had to have straight As or the beatings would be worse. Your mom did go out to have ice cream with you when it was especially bad. That‘s why you hate ice cream so much, especially vanillia because it was her favourite. Your secret hobby is skating. You feel free when you do it. You want to live at the coast, but not close to Cali, never back to Cali. You want Andrew to notice you and you hate how easily he let Neil in because obviously deserve it more and I get that. You tried drugs to escape, to see what was the appeal. Your uncle never helped you but he brainwashed you into believing he did. You grew up very religous and in an extraordinary homophobic household, you watched your cousin and only friend getting shipped away because he was different, not right, so you confinced yourself you were different. Heterosexual. When in reality you knew since you were 15 that you preferred guys. You liked girls as well. At least you thought but it‘s so much more complicated. Actually it isn‘t. You‘re asexual, you do however like the feeling of sex. You think the process is disgusting, but you still like the feeling. It has to be the right person though. It doesn‘t matter wether it‘s a boy or a girl or something else entierly, all that matters are the feelings the person makes you feel. It took you years to accept that you are not wrong, that you wouldn‘t have to go away like Nicky. You apologized to Nicky. You thought you had to be against their relationships, because that‘s what they made you believe. Old habits die hard. But you got over it and I am very proud of you. You sleep with a teddybear or with another person that cuddles you because the thought of being alone scares the living crap out of you. Your favourite flowers are sunflowers because yellow is a happy color. You hate sweets, you prefer salty snacks. You prefer coffee black, like your sould. You use sarcasm and humor as your coping mechanism. You stole my history books because you love history as well. You also love art but you don‘t think you are good enought to become an artist. You would love to work at Jean‘s studio but you are afraid to ask. You and Jean used to be friends but you cut him off and isolated yourself because your anxities and insecurities took over you again. Sometimes you have depressive episodes, in these you crave drugs more than normally. You want to stop it, you really do but somehow your brain tries to tell you you need it. You would love to have five dogs. An Irish Red Setter, an Irish Wolfhound, a poodle a big one though, a labrador and a golden retriever. You also want to adopt at least two kids. You don‘t want any child to go through what you had to go through or Andrew. So don‘t you dare tell me I never cared for you. Because I do. I listen when you tell me things. I remember every single time you came to me, black out drunk, crying and telling me you‘re worthless. Because every single time I wanted to tell you you aren‘t. You are a wonderful human being and I don‘t understand why I wasn‘t enough for you to stay but I will not let you tell me I never cared about you. Because that‘s some fucking bullshit“
Kevin didn‘t even notice the tears running down his cheeks. It‘s been a while since he was that emotional, since he let his walls down and dared to show emotions.
„You really did listen“, was all Aaron had to say.
„Why wasn‘t I enough for you?“, Kevin replied, voice thick of tears, Irish accent strong.

Baby, Don’t Tread
Words: 2225
Ao3 link
Andreil-centric. Warnings for Andrew being nonverbal for unspecified reasons and Neil practicing some negative self-talk! Title and summary from “Tread On Me” by Matt Maeson.
Summary: I could hardly sleep, so I don’t And I could hardly speak, so I won’t
Andrew hadn’t moved in a few hours. Neil had returned from class to find him on the couch, a heavy textbook propped up between his stomach and thighs, socked feet tucked between two cushions. One of his legs was wobbling every once in a while, as if burning off absent energy by habit instead of necessity. There was no answer to Neil’s greeting, but that was hardly surprising. He just couldn’t help but notice as the sun dipped lower and dinner came and went, but Andrew didn’t get up to join. Didn’t move a muscle, really, but for the one leg and an occasional page turn. He didn’t look up, not when anyone addressed him, not when Neil sat down at the far end of the couch with his own homework.
“Hey,” Neil tried, and earned a glance. He didn’t hold back his grin, but Andrew didn’t snarl at him for it. “There’s leftover chicken, if you want some.” Andrew didn’t look at him a second time; didn’t look anywhere but his textbook. Kevin shuffled around in the kitchen, complaining just loud enough for Neil to hear about the dishes and the freshmen.
“Andrew, you eating?” Nicky called out, and when Andrew didn’t respond, he leaned into view and held up a tupperware container half-full of oven-grilled chicken. “Are you hungry?” He pressed. Neil watched Andrew move his head slow, turning to face his cousin, eyes just this side of unfocused for a lingering moment before they caught on. Andrew blinked. His face didn’t show anything but his attention. Nicky gestured with the tupperware. “Dinner,” he said.
Andrew didn’t answer. He looked down at the couch, head turning just as slowly back to his textbook, and blinked a few more times. His lips thinned. He would eat, Neil concluded then, but he probably hadn’t so much as opened his mouth since breakfast. Andrew closed his textbook and tucked it against his hip as he stood and made his way to Nicky.
Secretly, Neil was a bit ashamed that he found Andrew’s actions strange, but Nicky seemed equally bewildered, so he vowed to take the afternoon in stride.
“I want to run the drill from last night again.”
“See, I don’t think it’s very useful,” Neil argued, thoroughly distracted for a moment by Kevin as he made his way to a dropped backpack in the corner. It seemed he was also inspired by Andrew’s studiousness. “They weren’t ready for it. Sub in Matt and Aaron so they can get comfortable with backliners who actually know what they’re doing.”
“Are you insulting me right now?”
“They won’t only learn by watching, Nicky.”
“They won’t learn by being carried, either-“
“-do you want them to learn the drill, or not-“
“Fuck you,” Kevin snapped, then sat with a too-loud thud next to his backpack and got out a notebook. Neil rolled his eyes and sank further into the couch. He looked over the back, though, to check on Andrew, who seemed entirely unaware of the room and chowed down on the cooling leftovers as Nicky hovered and spoke in cut-off half-questions. “When you’re-“
Neil heard the rest of the sentence and cut Kevin off. “Fight your homework, not me, asshole; I don’t give a shit.”
“You definitely give a shit,” Kevin grumbled, and Neil was about to gripe back at him when Nicky swooped in and leaned over the back of the couch.
“Has he been like this all day?”
Neil frowned. “Like what?”
“All… I don’t know. He seems fine, but it’s like he isn’t there.”
It was obvious who they were talking about, and Andrew appeared at Nicky’s side without a sound, looking at his cousin the same way as before. Attention, no tone to it. He didn’t speak. Nicky jumped only a little in surprise.
Neil asked, “Andrew, how was your day?”
Nicky looked at Andrew. Kevin, from the floor, looked at Andrew. Neil didn’t want to add any more pressure, so he looked at the textbook still in Andrew’s grip and watched his knuckles not change a shade in response to the situation. Andrew seemed entirely, genuinely, thoroughly, completely, absolutely disinterested. He stayed quiet.
“Andrew?” Kevin piped up, head tilted curiously. It was likely fueled by some complicated Exy-centered logic, but he asked, “you alright?”
How bizarre. Andrew didn’t react to that either, not for a long moment, and when Kevin sucked in a breath to continue it seemed like a mime had possessed Andrew’s body for a moment: his shoulder bumped up to his ear in an overly-exaggerated shrug and then he nodded once, head moving so forcefully that Neil could hear the bones in his jaw and collar thunk against each other. With no further explanation, Andrew returned to his previous pose on the couch. Neil was paralyzed. The sunset had made itself at home on the couch while Andrew ate, and cast a romantic glow to the ends of his blonde hair and the highlights of his face. Neil wasn’t close enough to appreciate how the light caught his eyes- he didn’t dare, even as his stomach dropped out at the relaxed slope of Andrew’s shoulders, at how he ducked his head a bit to hide from that light behind his textbook. Nicky’s hands curled over the back of the couch and squeezed until the fabric groaned. Andrew took a deep breath and- when the whole room leaned forward a bit to hear him- sighed.
//
Aaron and Nicky were arguing about something only tangentially related to Exy, so Kevin didn’t have much reason to start ranting. He tried striking up a conversation with Andrew, which was fruitless, as per usual, and Neil was excited enough about escaping campus that he answered noncommittally when Kevin’s interest turned to him. With the background chaos of quick words from such similar voices that Neil could tune them out and pretend it was one idiot talking to himself, Neil watched the road contentedly. He relaxed against the passenger seat and glanced down at the center console; he imagined setting his hand palm-up on it and having Andrew hold onto him for the rest of the drive. It was a nice image.
Andrew had been fairly quiet all day. They had chatted lazily over breakfast, and when everyone piled into the Maserati, he had grated out a confirmation for their activities. Neil had been confused at that more than the quiet- Andrew didn’t talk when he didn’t want to, didn’t say anything he didn’t mean, that was all well and good with Neil. But audibly, visibly struggling to speak? Holding onto his words like he’d been carved hollow and they were all he had left? Expression shuttering over some kind of pain? Neil was chilled by it.
“Hey!” Roland shouted when Andrew and Neil inevitably found their way to him. Other customers were outright ignored, but lucky Neil, no one was too upset. The night was still young. “What can I get you all tonight?”
A beat passed.
Several, really, between Neil’s earlier worry and the deafening music.
One too many. The moment lingered and still Andrew said nothing, attention very obviously divided between Roland and Neil and the people around them. The sooner they ordered, the sooner they could retreat to the booth, but Andrew did not order any drinks. Neil plastered on a smile as Roland’s began to waver.
“I’ve got it,” he blurted, and rattled off some requests that he didn’t remember clearly enough. Roland was sufficiently distracted, and soon enough, they were carrying two trays to the table. Neil grimaced when the three already seated began to complain. Surely they’d care a little less after a few unpleasant gulps. Andrew seemed to settle in for a long night in his spot at the same time as the other three nearly vibrated with a want to dance, gazes darting to each other and out into the crowd and down to the drinks.
When they were gone, Neil’s worry resurfaced. It wasn’t that something was explicitly wrong, not like Andrew had fought with his brother or heard from an old enemy, not like any of them were in danger at all. He seemed the opposite, really, except that one moment. Ice cream went down as quickly as it normally did, just as sickeningly sweet as Andrew liked it. His hands were at rest, armbands intact and untouched. For all Neil could tell, Andrew was having a normal day, but… Neil was still worried. He rambled to fill the space that was left in the absence of their nonsensical table conversation, gestured to iron out the curl building in his hands, kept Andrew in his sights but looked away as much as he could stand. Hadn’t Nicky said something, forever ago? It was like someone had hit mute on Andrew, but he simply didn’t care and lived on. Neil ignored the alcohol to keep himself from breaking and asking about it.
Worse, breaking and asking.
Fuck.
“It’s like you don’t even care about Exy, you guys always make fun of me,” Kevin whined as he was dragged inside. Neil took care of everyone’s shoes and, when it seemed like Aaron, Nicky, and Kevin would all live to the morning, he made for the couch.
Andrew’s supernatural ability to move faster and quieter than a ghost would probably never stop surprising Neil. He didn’t flinch, though, just turned when a light tug on his sleeve announced his presence. There was nothing to read in Andrew’s expression for a moment. The pair of them were left with the backdrop of a dark living room in Columbia, drunk stumbling audible from the bedrooms. Complaints, too, mostly Kevin’s, drifting through the walls and rattling hidden pipes. Neil waited and waited for something to happen; he could be patient, he could stand there for hours just looking at Andrew in the dark. He could wait for a car to drive by and light up Andrew’s jaw through the living room curtains, for both their eyes to burn until they passed out in the middle of the room, for the sun to rise and birds to sing and Andrew to speak. Neil knew stillness as a tool of life on the run, knew nonchalance and manners to cover panic and desperation.
It was only a moment, though, before Andrew invited the question. His shoulder drifted just slightly, his grip lingered on Neil’s sleeve. “Yes or no?” Andrew nodded. “I-“ Neil didn’t want to doubt him. “Can you… say it?” Andrew’s lips thinned, and even in the dark, even in a nanosecond, Neil knew the answer without understanding the reason behind it. “I’m alright with that,” he said quickly, or as quickly as the laws of physics would let him. “Upstairs?”
Andrew nodded again. They went upstairs.
//
Now, Neil was stupid. Unbelievably so, inconceivably so. Neil had never learned a thing in his life, in his own humble opinion, and the things he was good at involved just the bare bones of brain activity. Obviously. Through this unfortunate reality, Neil had started to notice a pattern. He decided to draw it out to better understand it. The sketch was yet another example of Neil being generally unremarkable, but it didn’t have to be beautiful.
He drew Andrew Minyard, dressed in all black for a night out at Eden’s Twilight. Shoulders sloped just so, hands relaxed and capable, mouth a single line.
He drew Andrew Minyard, standing in the corner of the girls’ dorm on some accursed movie night, elbows loose.
The day Nicky had commented on the silence, inhaling cooled-down chicken.
In the middle of a late-night practice; no one was communicating, and someone pinned it on Andrew, and then Nicky got mad and they all only stopped yelling at each other because Kevin was an easier and more universal target than Andrew.
Those moments felt different. It was like Andrew had something to say, but no words to use. He had powered through only the most necessary statements in those times. Usually when he was quiet it was because he meant to be. It was as surely a fact of life as Neil’s dumbfuckery that Andrew was a calculating sort of man. He never did anything he didn’t want to, never stayed put when he wanted to move. Always knew what he’d say before he said it. Andrew was powerful, really.
The air shifted over Neil’s shoulder, but he didn’t look. Neil leaned back in the desk chair in some wishful thinking that he could lean on Andrew, who moved fluidly to sit on the desk and shake out a cigarette.
A conversation passed between them in a glance. Andrew rolled his eyes. “What, I’m supposed to think you’re ugly?” Neil scoffed defensively, and cherished the brief push of calloused fingertips on his chin. It felt like… Neil didn’t have a word for what he’d never felt before Andrew. It didn’t matter. Neil was stupid. He just tossed his chin back in Andrew’s direction and blurted, “yes or no?” And grinned into the kiss Andrew gave him, leaning in slowly with a fine-tuned focus like Neil would never be in this spot again. He knew both their shoulders sagged from the way they shared breath more than any visual evidence or exploratory hands.
He knew and cared that Andrew was comfortable.

some things i would like to remind everyone about aftg
kevin day is not a coward, he’s learning to overcome his trauma and fear of his abusers. even before he’s dealt with any of his shit he still manages to stand face to face with the moriyamas, and he put up with everything they did to him since he was a child. he’s a strong fucking character. also, he actually gets into a lot of fights, many of which he picks himself. he’s honestly almost as bad as neil in a lot of ways
nicky is more than just an over-the-top, horny gay. he’s pretty well adjusted considering the trauma he went through—before he even took on the added responsibility and trauma of the twins—and he’s so dedicated and loving to his family, even when they treat him like shit. he’s deep, optimistic, forgiving, faithful, and also a very strong character. he’s more than just some twink, guys. nicky gets pretty serious in some of his scenes, and we all remember thanksgiving.
just the fact that ALL of the foxes dealt with some serious trauma and shit in their lives, not just neil and andrew. all of them
aaron did hard drugs to cope with his mothers abuse and he has serious problems with older women/potential mother figures. i really feel like everyone just completely forgot aaron is a recovering drug addict? bc that’s a significant part of canon
while we’re on the subject, matt is a recovering drug addict too. like, hello, his track marks anyone?? it’s one the the first things we’re told about his character. also that ANDREW was the one who led to matt’s eventual rehab (through some... questionable means, definitely)
dan, renee, and allison were Not friends their first year
allison reynolds can and absolutely Will throw hands. she is not afraid to fight someone on or off the court. also, she genuinely cares about exy and gave up her family and inheritance to play!!!
not only was dan (unapologetically) a stripper, but she keeps in touch with her stage sisters and i think invited them to their final game?
ANDREW HAS A PERSONALITY MORE THAN JUST INTENSE SILENCE AND “YES OR NO”. like, don’t get me wrong, those are very much Andrew, but don’t erase medicated andrew’s whole personality! sure it wasn’t exactly him as himself, but it’s the andrew we saw and knew for at least two books. and medicated andrew was an Experience. he was hilarious and sassy and frankly kind of unbelievable. he delivered a lot of great lines
neil josten is not soft. he’s not even nice. he is an asshole (we been knew) and i mean seriously, just genuinely a dick. we all know and love his roasts and sassy moments, but my boy has some highly questionable morals, a concerning lack of empathy at times, just awful priorities really, and a whole crap ton of anger and trust issues. also, he has a habit of picking fights and then just hightailing it the fuck out of there, letting someone else step in to try and diffuse the situation. he’s exactly like a cat that makes eye contact with you as it knocks a vase off the counter and then pretends it did nothing wrong and can’t understand why you’re upset
aaron was interested in meeting andrew when they first found out they were twins
aaron is actually pretty protective of andrew in his own way!!!
there are a lot of parallels between aaron and neil, but one i particularly want to point out is that neil gave aaron so much shit about still holding that resentment about andrew and everything that went down with their mom BUT neil was in a very similar situation (we all know neil’s mom beat the crap out of him) and he still mourned his mom!! in fact he never decisively villianized his own mother while having no problem villianizing tilda to try and justify andrew’s actions (ik this sounds biased but i’m not casting judgement here, i understand why andrew did what he did and i can’t say i hate him for it)
coach wymack is very mindful of all his foxes’ traumas and while he doesn’t pretend to be a particularly pleasant or coddling authority figure, he does go out of his way to accommodate for them however they need it. he won’t yell or make himself opposing with neil. he follows and deals with andrew’s touching rule. he indulges in the monsters’ trips to columbia as long as they stay out of trouble for the most part. he knows his players and what they’ve been through, and he does everything he can to get them help, whether they know they need it or not. he gives second chances. he makes sure they feel safe.
also, and this is on such a different note than the last couple of points, but even though the foxes supposedly sucked as a team before neil got there (and well into his first year), the student body was still pretty supportive?? like ok ik there was the vandalism thing and no one actually expected the foxes to win or whatever, but they still turned up to the games and cheered. if i remember correctly, the wore orange on game days and booed the opposing teams. was there a song? there might’ve been like a school song too

Chapter 3
On Saturday morning Neil insulted Riko on national television. Kevin warned them Riko would retaliate the same day. The Foxes should have stayed together out of sight, but Allison and Seth went bar-hopping downtown with friends. Neil saw Seth right before they all split up. He remembered telling the upperclassmen goodbye before following Andrew south to Columbia. Four hours later Seth was dead.
I'm pretty sure that I said this when it happened in the first book, but like... Normal people don't go around and literally murder because of college sports. THIS ISN'T FUCKING NORMAL. WHY THE FUCKITY FUCK WOULD YOUR AVERAGE PERSON FEEL THE NEED TO HIDE SIMPLY BECAUSE THE GUY DOESN'T LIKE YOU?
If I had literally any faith that this series was good, it would come out that Riko and the Ravens had had nothing at all to do with Seth's death, and that Seth was just a junkie.
But the drama of having random yakuza relatives murder a rival college sportsball player for you!!!!!!
She knew Seth liked mixing drinks with his prescription pills. Neil saw Allison dig through Seth's pockets in search of the bottle. She'd come up empty and kissed Seth's irritation away.
Going back to this book's casual sexism, I completely and utterly adore how it was 100% the responsibility of Allison to ensure that Seth wasn't doing drugs. And not literally anybody else. Or even the fact that most universities now have strict anti-drug policies for athletes.
Nope! This is all on Allison!
But that was for one half, and now Andrew was expected to play a full game. The obvious answer was that Andrew would have to play with his drugs tonight whether he wanted to or not, but things were never that easy with Andrew.
I love how they're not only going against a court-ordered drug to not be given, but also putting Andrew's mental health as well as the safety of literally everybody around Andrew at risk... For a game.
Andrew said Exy was too boring to be worth his while.
I STILL DON'T KNOW WHY ANYBODY IS EVEN HERE. IF YOU HATE THE GAME SO MUCH, THEN JUST FUCKING LEAVE.
"Maybe you've noticed how much I let this team get away with," Wymack said. "I know what sort of people I've recruited, and I know some of them need a little help to keep an even keel. So long as no one gets hurt, no one gets caught, and no one is stupid enough to bring it onto my court, I don't care what you guys get up to in your free time. It's not my business because I don't want it to be my business."
Wymack meant the cracker dust party drugs and alcohol Andrew gave his group in Columbia. Neil wasn't sure what surprised him more: that Wymack knew what his defense line was into or that he let it happen.
For me, the most unbelievable part about this isn't that David doesn't give a shit about the drug abuse going on... it's the fact that the university doesn't care. A lot of universities now have drug policies (as well as “no pass, no play” rules) BECAUSE IT WAS SUCH A HUGE GODDAMEND PROBLEM.
But I also remember that in the first book, it was painfully obvious that the author has never once attended an actual university because there were so many things wrong with everything she was describing...
Truth was Wymack picked them because he understood firsthand how much they needed another chance.
He says this, but at the same time, also allows the students to go out and do things like party and do drugs. How much could David possibly care about the students WHILE HE'S ALLOWING THIS TO CONTINUE?!
A few minutes later they were on the road. Neil watched out the window until the campus disappeared from view.
Chapter 3 summary: It's time for the next game. It's an away game, and they get out of their afternoon classes so that they can travel to the other university. As they're in transit from the actual university to the stadium, Neil thinks about how the team seems to have changed for the better now that Seth is gone, even though nobody will admit it. He also thinks about how Andrew is 100% convinced Riko had something to do with Seth's death, even as impossible as it sounds.
They get into the stadium, where they see Allison for the first time since Seth's death. She's in a catatonic state. The others walk on eggshells around her, except for Andrew, who doesn't seem to give a flying fuck. Coach talks about how they've come up with a plan for this game, although there's a lot of bullshit “technical” talk that is inherently meaningless.
But a big part of the plan tonight hinges on Andrew being off his medication. He normally is for the first half of the game, and then recovers while he takes his pills again for the second half. But he needs to be off for the entire game so that they can actually win tonight. Andrew threatens Kevin with his knife over some bullshit or another; I literally don't even care anymore.
Neil then takes the time to remind the reader about Kevin's background with exy. And then about Andrew's inability to focus properly while he's drugged up, but while he's sober, he literally doesn't give a shit about exy.
Neil leaves the locker room, where he finds David checking their rackets. Since this is an away game, they're all bringing their spares, and it would suck to have nothing to play with if one of them broke. David says a lot of stuff about how he knows about all of the drug abuse that's going on with the players, but as I said, all of it is inherently meaningless. David cares more about exy than the lives of the players, as evident by Seth's death.
David and Neil load up the rackets, and get onto the bus, where the others are waiting for them.

Runaway Train
For @foxeshaveclaws! You wanted long-distance relationships and surprises gone wrong- it's my first time writing for Andreil and this fandom, so I hope this still manages to live up to that, while staying withing the realm of their relationship :) Thank you for your wonderful prompt! Happy Valentine's Day <3 @aftgexchange                                                          *** “Come on, Josten,” Wymack yelled from where he stood behind the plexiglass, “Hurry up.”
Neil grit his teeth. He readjusted his grip on his racquet and swung, fast and hard. The ball sailed across the court, right into Robin’s waiting net as she caught it with practiced ease. He tore his helmet from his head and ran a hand through his sweaty, tangled hair. Fuck. That was the third shot he had missed. (Keep reading here or on AO3!)
“Nice shot, captain,” Jack taunted with a sneer, leaning against the wall. He shared a glance with Sheena, who scoffed in agreement.
It was late afternoon and the team had gathered to practice for their home game against the Breckenridge Jackals this Friday. They had been running drills for the last half hour or so and Neil was suffering. He couldn’t focus. The harsh fluorescent lights stung his eyes and his head pounded viciously. His thoughts kept drifting off into nothing, mind numb from exhaustion. At this rate, Coach was going to bench him.
Wymack blew his whistle, the sharp ring echoing across the court. “Go home,” he said, “You better not pull this shit tomorrow.” He spoke to the team, but Neil could feel the weight of his words as if they were directed at him specifically. He was captain, he should be better than this. He was better than this.
They dispersed slowly, the girls heading to one locker room and the guys the other. Before they parted, Robin brushed a hand against Neil’s shoulder. “Sweetie’s later?” She gave him a half smile. Her wild, curly hair stuck to her forehead, face red and sweaty.
Neil nodded. He went to his locker without a word, sat down and started peeling his shoes off one at a time. Bruises were starting to form where he had been body-checked into the wall several times during their scrimmage. It was a familiar feeling, one that usually offered comfort, but now only made him feel worse.
A shadow fell upon him. Neil glanced up to see Jack leaning against the lockers, arms crossed. He was still in his bright orange gear, golden hair slicked back. “You better not fuck up this weekend,” he said. “I don't want people thinking the whole team sucks as much as our captain.” A few snickers passed through the room.
Neil grit his teeth. He undid the Velcro strap of his gloves. Not for the first time, he found himself wondering how Dan had ever managed this- the disobedience and disrespect from players who thought themselves superior. Even as vice-captain, he at least had been able to rely on Kevin’s demanding personality and fame to keep them in check.
But neither of them was here now. Even the cousins were gone, leaving Neil to start the fall semester on his own. He thought after years of running, he was used to being alone, but his time with the Foxes had changed that. He would never admit it out loud, but he missed them. Badly.
“If you do blow it, though,” Jack continued, “maybe Coach will actually do something worthwhile and give your position to someone who deserves it.”
“Like who, you?” Neil eyed him up and down. Jack was only a sophomore and already thought he was better than everyone else, simply because Kevin recruited him. He started shoving his gear in his locker. “Your defense is weak, you can barely hold your own against the press and, frankly, your personality is shit.”
Jack scoffed. “That’s rich, coming from the guy getting fucked by that psycho Minyard,” he spat, as if the words left a foul taste in his mouth. “Bet the press would have a field day with that.”
Neil clenched his jaw. Fuck this. His and Andrew’s relationship was never a secret, not with the way the Foxes gossiped, but it was private. He didn’t go around throwing it in everyone’s face, and he definitely didn’t need some arrogant little shit doing that for him. “Don’t,” he warned.
Jack laughed, raising his hands. “What are you gonna do? Make me run laps?” He rolled his eyes.
That was it.
Neil’s fist collided with Jack’s nose. It gave a satisfying, sickening crack, blood spurting from his nostrils as he stumbled back with a cry, clutching his face. “What the fuck!” He lunged forward. Acting quickly, one of their teammates grabbed him and held him back. “You son of a bitch!” he snarled.
Neil slung his bag over his shoulder. “You want the extra laps too?” Jack glowered at him. “I didn’t think so.” Neil slammed the door shut as he left, the sound of it echoing throughout the gym.
                                                               ***
Neil’s phone rang as he was forcing himself through the last of his math homework. He picked it up without checking the caller ID. All these years and he still had the same ringtone. “Hey.”
“Hi.” Andrew’s voice was muffled. There was some shifting and crackling through the speaker, until he sounded clearer. “Heard you finally snapped.”
Neil rolled his eyes. “Who told you?” He chewed the cap of his pen and scribbled down something he thought resembled a logical answer. Tiny inked fox paws and exy racquets littered the margins of his paper.
“Robin.” Of course. She, along with the rest of the team, had found out during morning practice, when Jack strutted in with a bruised face and swollen nose. To say Coach had been displeased was an understatement.
“He was asking for it.” Neil shoved his book aside and walked over to the bed. He let himself fall backwards onto the mattress, hitting it with a soft huff as the air left his lungs. He balled his hand into a fist, watching the ugly, shiny white scars stretch across his knuckles. A deep purple bruise colored the skin of his hand. He didn’t regret punching Jack. If anything, he wished he had done so sooner.
“I’m surprised it took you this long,” Andrew remarked dryly.
Neil chuckled. Silence passed. He fidgeted with the strings of his sweater. “How was your day?”
“Long.” After graduation, Andrew had signed a three year contract with Boston’s pro team.  He lived there now, in a small apartment Neil had the only spare key to. It hung on his key chain, along with the ones for Columbia and the Maserati.
Neil hummed. “You talked to Nicky?”
“More or less,” Andrew said. “He’s as disgustingly happy as ever.” A few months ago, Nicky finally moved to Germany. The wedding wasn’t until next year, but it was all he ever talked about.
“Good.” A pause. “You visiting soon?”
Andrew was silent for a while. “Not for a few weeks,” he said. “Think you can manage that long, Josten?”
He huffed. “I’ll be fine.”
“Sure,” Andrew drawled.
He rolled his eyes. He flipped and laid on his stomach, holding the phone in front of him. “I want to see you,” he mumbled into the sheets.
There was another pause, and for the briefest moment, Neil wondered if he had crossed a line. If he had made things weird. This was their first year apart and learning to navigate this whole long-distance thing was frustrating. They weren’t the most outwardly affectionate to begin with.
“Happy now?”
Neil looked up. A blurry, pixelated image of Andrew appeared on the cracked screen of his phone, glasses sliding down his nose and hair damp.
He was wearing his PSU sweater, Neil noted. “It’ll do, I guess,” he said with a shrug.
“I could hang up on you, you know.”
“You won’t.” Neil’s smile grew.
He didn’t.
                                                              ***
“You sure you’re okay, Josten?” Robin asked as she chewed at the end of her straw, bending it left and right. Sweetie’s was surprisingly empty for a Monday night. A few people lingered at the bar and an elderly couple occupied the booth behind them, but other than that, it was empty. “And don’t give me that I’m fine crap.”
Neil pushed his eggs around, watching how the yolk broke and spilled across his plate. “Just tired, I guess,” he mumbled. It wasn’t a lie. He always slept better with someone near him. It used to be his mom, but over time, Andrew had managed to worm his way into that spot instead. In his absence the mattress felt too cold, too empty. It took Neil hours to fall asleep.
“You talk to Andrew?”
“Yeah.” They had called for another half hour or so, before Neil left to finish his homework. It was fine at first, but their conversation had quickly grown stilted, punctuated by one word answers and long silences. He noticed that was happening frequently lately. Thinking about it made him sick to his stomach. He pushed his plate aside.
“Then what’s got you so fucked up?”
“Nothing.”
Robin gave him a look.
He ran a hand through his hair. “It’s this whole captain thing, I guess,” he said, slumping back in his seat. The leather booth squeaked under his shifting weight.
“Hey,” Robin said, reaching over to squeeze his hand. “You carried us through the first season. You’re doing fine.” She offered him a reassuring smile.
The gesture was appreciated, but it didn’t make Neil feel that much better. “Yeah,” he muttered, tearing his toast to shreds.
Robin picked up her pencil and started tapping it on her sketchpad. The book was filled with scribbles and quick sketches of him and the team. She carried it wherever she went. “You know what? We should do something fun,” she said suddenly, sitting up. “After the game. Go out for a movie or whatever.”
Neil considered it. He wasn’t a fan of movies, or anything social really, but the idea of spending another night locked in his room alone sounded excruciating. “Sure,” he said with a shrug.
Robin looked surprised. “Okay,” she said. “Cool. Meet me here at eight?”
He nodded. Maybe it would help distract him, even if only for a few hours.
                                                          ***
They ended up losing the game.
Earlier that morning, right before their last practice, Neil sent Andrew a quick text.
To: Minyard [6:45am] You watching tonight?
From: Minyard [7:25am] Can’t. Plans.
That shouldn’t have bothered him so much. When he was on court, adrenaline pumping through his veins, the weight of his racquet in hand, he couldn’t care less about who was watching. All that mattered was the ball in his net and the goal ahead. Everything else faded into the background.
But Andrew always watched his games.
And then, when he tried to pry for answers as to what these plans were, Andrew’s replies went from short to nonexistent.
Neil managed to walk the team through warm-ups, but he couldn’t stop the flow of thoughts that forced their way into his mind, whispering of his incompetence as captain, his lack of friends and his possibly dying relationship with Andrew. When the first buzzer sounded and he nearly dropped his racquet, startled out of his spiraling thoughts, he knew it wasn’t going to end well.
It had been a close call in the end though. With thirty seconds left on the clock, Neil soared across court, twisting and turning around the Jackal’s defense until the goal was in sight. He stopped, swung his racquet back and took the shot.
The Breckenridge goalie dove for it and at the very last second, caught the ball with his net. The crowd gave a deafening roar, drowning out the buzzer as it signaled the end of the game.
Neil’s heart dropped to his feet. He stared at the goal, a cold, dreadful numbness spreading through him.
“Come on,” Robin muttered, slapping him hard across the back, “Keep it together.”
The rest was a blur. As captain, he upheld his duty to entertain the press, but didn’t have it in him to bite back against their snarky, provocative comments. Wymack seemed pleased, if not a little concerned with his compliance.
No one spoke in the locker rooms. Tension hung in the air, sharp and uncomfortable. Most of his teammates slipped out of the room without a word, but Jack stopped in front of Neil as he stood. He towered over him, six feet of anger and misplaced arrogance. “Should’ve fucking known,” he hissed.
Neil bristled, fists clenched and ready for a fight.
“Don’t bother, Jack,” one of his teammates said. “He isn’t worth it.”
The door closed and Neil was left alone surrounded by an oppressive, judgmental silence. Sweat trickled down his neck. His chest felt tight with each breath.
There was only one thing left to do. He had to run.
                                                           ***
The sun was long gone by the time Neil made it back to the Fox Tower. His legs burned and arms ached, but he felt better. Running lessened some of the panic that had held him in a vice-like grip, but their loss still hung over him like a thick cloud. What if Coach was wrong? What if he wasn’t cut out for captain?
The parking lot was mostly empty, save for a single car parked under the lamppost. Neil crossed the street and kept his head down as he passed. A few steps from the tower’s entrance, he stopped.
He turned. “Andrew?”
Leaning back against the hood of the car, a cigarette in hand, stood Andrew. He was wearing a burgundy button down and black tie, sleeves rolled up to reveal his arm bands. Under the flickering yellow light, his hair glowed a deep gold, neatly swept off his forehead. Neil swallowed thickly.
“Running away again, Josten?” Andrew took a drag from his cigarette and blew the smoke in his direction. His dark eyes flickered over Neil’s sweaty, disheveled appearance.
Neil walked over and came to a stop in front of him. It didn’t make any sense- Andrew wasn’t supposed to show up for another two weeks. What was he doing here? Had he been at the game? Neil hoped not. “Why are you here?”
“Take a guess.”
“I thought you had plans,” Neil bit, shoving his hands in his sweater.
Andrew looked unimpressed. “Is that your guess?”
“I don’t know,” Neil snapped. “Are you here to watch me ruin my career as captain?” He kicked a stone, watching as it skipped across the parking lot.
Andrew raised an eyebrow. “One game and you’re ready to jump ship?” He tsked, shaking his head. “I thought you were over the whole ‘flight risk’ thing.”
“I’m not running away,” Neil snapped.
Andrew stared at him, waiting.
“I just-” He tore a hand through his hair. “I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing, okay?” Once he started, he found he couldn’t stop. The words came rushing out with a single breath, every thought and twisted emotion he had bottled up since the start of the school year. “I’m not Dan, or Kevin. I don’t know how to be a good captain, and I definitely don’t know how to do it on my own.”
“Then quit.” The cigarette glowed bright orange, another puff of smoke drifting in the air.
Neil scoffed and rolled his eyes. “It’s not that easy.”
“Nothing is.” Andrew reached for him, turning Neil’s chin so he was forced to look up. He stared at Neil, stoic and calm, the deep brown of his irises like liquid gold, holding Neil captive. It was in that unwavering apathy he found himself relaxing, shoulders slowly sagging as his worries slipped away. “You’ll manage.”
Neil drew a slow breath. The acrid, sharp scent of the cigarette smoke eased his nerves. He nodded.
Satisfied, Andrew dropped his hand. He picked up Neil’s wrist instead, analyzing the bruised skin of his knuckles. He brushed his thumb along the row of scars.
Neil’s heart skipped a beat. He cleared his throat. “You didn’t answer my question,” he said.
“You missed dinner,” Andrew remarked.
A frown furrowed Neil’s brow. “What do you mean?”
“You had plans, didn’t you?”
Fuck. In his sudden and overwhelming distress, Neil had completely forgotten about Robin. She was going to be so pissed.
“Yeah, with Robin,” he said. “Did she tell you that too?” He wasn’t the kind to be jealous, but sometimes he wondered if she spoke to Andrew more than he did.
Andrew looked unamused. “I can’t believe how incredibly stupid you are sometimes.” He gestured to himself.
“What?” Neil’s eyes flickered over his outfit. Then it clicked. “I wasn’t meeting Robin, was I?”
“Reservations were at eight,” Andrew remarked dryly.
Neil checked his phone. Quarter past ten. He winced. Had he really been gone that long?
He didn’t know what to say. It wasn’t like Andrew to visit unprompted. Definitely not like this. Not as a ... surprise.
Something else caught Neil’s eye as he looked at his phone. “It’s February 14th,” he said, a slow grin curling his lips.
“He knows how to read,” Andrew said with mock surprise.
“That’s Valentine’s day,” Neil persisted.
“Really?” Andrew flicked the cigarette onto the ground, stomping it out with his foot.
“You know,” Neil said slowly, trailing a finger along the fabric of Andrew’s collar, “I wonder what the press would think if they knew Andrew Minyard was a hopeless romantic,” He stepped closer.
Andrew narrowed his eyes. “One hundred and three percent, Josten.”
He leaned in close, lips inches from Andrew’s. “Yes or no?”
Andrew flicked his head but pulled him forward by his collar. “Yes.”
His lips met Andrew’s in a soft, warm kiss that sent pleasant shivers down his spine. All of his worries faded into nothing and when Andrew’s cool, rough hands found their way into his hair, pulling him even closer, he knew that in the end, he was going to be okay.

Okay so I had an idea for an AFTG fic but again I’m horrible at anything that isn’t hc’s so here we are (feel free to make this into a fic if you want just credit me) *Also all pairing in this are platonic besides andreil and mattdan soo, don’t like get out*
This spawned from that fact that one of my 3 PTP’s (platonic trust pairing) in AFTG is Kev and Neil
This is probably my PTP that has the most popularity in the fandom I’d say (my other 2 are Renee/Andrew/Neil and Neil/Dan which are both *really* hard to find ((at least on ao3)) so that sucks) but you’d be surprised how little it gets like actually focused on
Most times, platonic wise, Neil gets shown bonding with The MonstersTM, Allison, or Matt
wHICH IS FINE IM TOTALLY OKAY W/ THAT
I just happen to enjoy neil/dan, kev/neil,and renee/andrew/neil more
So I wanted a fic that really showcased kev and neils relationship
BUT IM ALSO IN LOVE WITH OUSIDER POV SO THIS HAPPENED
Now onto the actual headcanon
So neil and kevin are like best friends
They've been like that for a while
but they also like fucking despise each other
like they love and care deeply for each other and would probably die for the other if the situation called for it
but will that stop them from almost killing each other 24/7?
HELL NO
so they go to college together
along with all the upperclassmen (so matt+dan+allison+renee+seth) but not the monsters
andrew and neil have been together for a bit
they met around the same time kev and neil did so they've been together for a while (also while we're talking abt relationships, i don't ship renison ((am i the only one who believes that renee is a strong aro gal who don't need no man/lady/person)) but if you wanna make this renison, go ahead)
andrew goes to a different college tho ( for some reason i dunno)
and neil doesn't really like sharing stuff abt his personal life
we all know this
but a lot of the stuff he's done in his life involves andrew
so drew is brought up a fair amount
but when the upperclassmen ask who he is neil kinda just smiles and then moves on so they ask kevin and he's like
oh andrew is like one of my bffls he's a ride or die
(obviously not phrased like that)
and the upperclassmen r like 'ok he can be trusted he's a friend'
(little do they know hehhehhe-)
sO ONE DAY
kev is tryna forget all his issues
so he decides to get hella pissed
wasted like he's never been b4
probably cause thea broke up w/ him last week but we don't talk abt that okay shhhhhhh
so he goes to the next party alli throws and
let's say it together kids
gets wasted like he's never been b4
to the point where the upperclassmen don't really know wht to do with him????
so they call up neil like yo pick up kev he's drunk off his ass like always but we think he's doing it cause he's sad this time'
so neil, being the good and sweet angel (not) that he is
goes to pick up kevin
and like he finds him on a coach almost catatonic just rambling to himself
so neil picks him up and drags him away to his car
and ofc all the upperclassmen r trying to help
so while neil is putting kevin into his car kev randomly just stops talking
(which is weird cause he's kept rambling this entire time)
and he looks neil in the eyes and goes
'i love you neil'
and neil just like takes a second
pAuSeS
because he's not used to people showing him love even tho so many ppl rlly do love him (this boy is2g-)
and then quietly says
'love you too kev'
and finishes buckling him up
all the upperclassmen have been watching this going on the entire time and they read into in the exact wrong way
(they're trying their best, my baby dumbasses, but they're just wrong)
and think this is a romantic love confession between frenimies *instead* of the declaration of mutual respect and affection between 2 bro's that it is
matt is the first one to voice this after kev and neil leave and he is
PUMPED
he is super excited that his bro has found someone to love just like he found dan and is super excited to like talk abt love and go on double dates n stuff
and every one else agrees
which is why they're all super disappointed that by the time a week goes by, nothing has changed between them
so dan matt and allison decide to do something about it (renee+seth ducking out because'it's rude to meddle' and 'why tf would i care abt jostens love bullshit')
they try to set up kevin and neil a bunch of different time s
once with the offer of a study session that they all say they can't make it to, leaving neil and kevin alone
another time with the offer of kevin and neil going to the movies w/ matt and dan
(neil ends up busy w/ a skype date with andrew that he can't pass up cause they're always so busy and he has to see his boyf so kevin just ends up 3rd wheeling matt and dan)
and once with allison straight up just telling neil that he and kevin should get coffee some time
which neil respond to with
'we already get coffee together?'
so dan matt and alli are stumped
they don't know what to do with these 'lovesick' idiots
they're problem gets solved tho don't you worry
so the next weekend, andrew is gonna come over to psu and stay for like a week
neil is oVER THE MOON
HE IS SOO HAPPYYYYY
And kevin is really happy too
so the upperclassmen take this to mean that these boys have finally gotten the hint and asked each other out
so imagine they're suprise when the next time the group goes to get lunch (which they do with each other every wednesday )
a super short blond emo joins them
and no one really acknowledges it?!?!?!?!?!?
until renee is just like 'hello andrew, how are you?' knowing smile on her face
and the upperclassmen are just like 'oh it's the famous andrew, that makes sense' but then they're like 'wait how does renee know andrew?!?!'
they ask and renee is just like 'neil gave me his discord. he thought we'd get along well'
-and then they're just like okayyy renee totally has a crush but well let it slideee
uNTIL
at the end of lunch neil is just like 'oh wait i never properly introduced him-' -cause you're a mess, junkie' -fuck off andrew' then just turns to the upperclassmen and says
'guys this is my boyfriend andrew'
and the foxes just silently freak out
because neil is in love with kevin? it's so clear? why did neil go and get a boyf when he has his love right in front of him??????
so after lunch, matt dan and alli ask to talk to neil privately
(andrew, kev,and renee all talk together while seth like, looks at his phone)
and they're like 'neil why'd you get a boyf??'
and neils like 'wdym?'
and alli says 'why'd you get a boyf if your so obviously in love w/ kevin?!'
and neil just LAUGHS at them
straight up cackles
and then the upperclassmen are like whaaaaattttt????
we saw your declaration of love at the party??
and you're both really close and seem to genuinely like and be interested in each other??
what gives????
and neils like
'me n kev are besties
that was a platonic declaration of love
also
i'm demi and me and drew have been together for like 3 years now'
and the upperclassmen are just like 'ooooooooooooooooohhhhhh sorryyyyyyyyy'
it's the first time alli has ever lost a bet (it was w/ seth abt neils feelings for kevin)
neil tells andrew abt it and the shortie just snorts and is like 'kevin would fuck a racket quicker than he'd fuck you'
neil is like 'i'm basically exy personified tho, soooooo'
drew tells him to shut up
(he does when andrew asks yes or no, just nods his head and smiles)
renee knew all along and is happy for her friends
kevin just wants to play exy he's been deprived the entire post
So yeah that's the entire headcanon. If you want some music to listen to while you write or just in general i recommend "I lost a Friend" by FINNEAS and "Corduroy Dreams" by Rex Orange County. they don't really have anything to do with the story, they're just real good :) Thanks for reading. see y'all later

Oh, you mean this one, @quidditchfrogs? >:3c
Yes I can do that
[Edit: WONG LEVER KRONK correct link now below]
The other day I wrote a story that involved a list that Neil tries to write as he struggles with his sense of self after years of pretending to be anyone else. At the end of the story, Andrew forces Neil to talk about his negative feelings because Neil is very good at talking and very bad at feelings. Andrew’s motivation is unclear because the story is from Neil’s POV but if Andrew believes in one thing it is that Neil needs therapy. And he knows and accepts that it is not his job to be a therapist but he can at least get Neil to acknowledge it and work through it on his own.
What Neil doesn’t know is that Andrew has his own list. It is not written down because he does not need to write it down (and refuses to leave evidence to be found). It goes a little something like this
Perspective
Change
Joy
Routine
Emulation
Andrew’s list is something he has been curating since he got off his meds. Before the medication, he did not have the therapist he needed and did not know trust understand any techniques he was told to try. It is a list for apathy and he runs through it and picks one thing to do every day from this list.
But he also will run through it and pick one as needed for others. Apathy is often linked to depression and both fucking suck and Andrew will do what is necessary to make sure the lives of his family members do not suck. To an extent. In his own way. He’s still Andrew about it.
1. Perspective
Andrew is not lazy. He is not lazy or boring or unmotivated. In fact, I think that him going to see Bee every week by choice shows how motivated he actually is. How he feels is a temporary state of being. Sometimes he needs to remind himself of this. Some days it’s harder than others. It is an internal process (though on bad days he texts Bee)
2. Change
What are the causes? Can they be changed? Andrew can’t control how strangers speak to his brother but he can sneak into his and Matt’s room and pour all of the shitty beer down the drain so that Aaron never has to smell it ever again and relive things that are better left forgotten. (The first time, he has Neil replace it with a quality IPA. The second time, he does not. The third time, he cuts the cans and leaves slivers of sharp aluminum in Matt’s bed. There is not a fourth time.)
3. Joy
What has caused joy in the past? Does it still? Sometimes, Nicky will get a surprise call on bad nights even though it is 4 a.m. in Germany. He swears that Erik is his soulmate and has some sort of sixth sense.
4. Routine
Routines can be positive. Sometimes. After a bad game is a bad week and another bad week. Practice class eat practice practice class eat practice practice class eat practice. Andrew refuses to drive Kevin to night practice one time and does not let Neil do it either. Instead, he forces Kevin into bed early and wakes him up at 3 to go to the court. Kevin punches the wall but after a few hours with an exy stick he meets the other foxes at breakfast with brighter eyes and fresh ideas.
5. Emulation
The people around you can have a profound effect on you. Sometimes, Neil will go down the hall to return a book to Matt that he doesn’t remember borrowing. Oh, what’s that? Matt found some extra fruit salad in the back of the fridge? Does it have oranges? Duh, bro, I was about to come share it with you. Hey, did you know that this movie is on? Dude, I promise you’ll actually like this one, they totally get the exy right. Hey man, is that a new haircut? Hey, bro, check this out. Dude, look at this. Oh, my guy you are in for a treat. (Neil may come back with a “bro” on the tip of his tongue but also with relaxed shoulders and a smile).

incarnate (p2)
yall rlly liked this for some reason so have some more - p1
*
Neil - the name he’d chanced upon and decided he preferred much better than Nathaniel - liked this realm. It was another version of Earth, sure, but it was significantly brighter than his own.
For one, demons didn’t roam around freely, some how excluded by a convenient barrier that encircled this dimension. That meant that Neil really didn’t have to worry about Lola, or Jackson, or Romero, or DiMaccio popping out of the shadows to leer at him and bind him with platinum chains. They were all mutts of some kind because his father only employed those who were resistant to both human weaknesses and demon weaknesses.
That was always bad news for Neil. His mother had died so long ago that he could barely recall her - his father had caught up with him enough times that he’d tampered with his memory - and yet the thought of her death still ached.
She’d talked about this place, once. A dimension free of monsters, where magic flowed freely in humans called witches and fae. It’d be paradise for us, Abram, she’d whispered. If only we could cross the border.
Their only hope of figuring out a way to cross said border was with his father’s journal, of which they’d (they, being Mary) stolen and then lost. It seemed as though it’d slipped through the folds of the universe anyway and right as his father’s knife had begun its arc downwards towards his chest, fate had skipped along and said nope, you’re not dying today: thanks to Andrew Minyard’s summons, he’d slipped away just in time.
“You good, buddy?”
“Hm?” Neil looked up from where he’d zoned out. “Oh, right. Yeah, I’m good.”
Matt hopped over the back of the couch and landed right next to Neil with a bowl of snacks. Neil had never seen them before.
“What’s that?”
Matt snorted. “You really crack me up, you know that? It’s popcorn.”
Popcorn. Right. Neil took a few pieces and munched on them, turning his attention back to the television where a violent sport was being played. It seemed pointless to Neil, but maybe these sorts of games were what kept humans so civil. A demon’s version of fun was finding another demon to eat and seeing how loud their prey screamed when the bone marrow was sucked out from their femur bones.
“What’s this sport called again?” Neil asked his roommate, averting his line of thinking as quick as he could.
“Exy. You like it? We could try it with some of my - friends.” Matt jostled his shoulder. "You clock a faster mile on the treadmill than anyone I know: You might have fun as a striker.”
Ah, yes. The treadmill. Neil had been momentarily weirded out by the thought of running but staying still, but it was good to get out his jitters on rainy days. There were a lot of those down in South Carolina. Neil hated the way the humidity made his curls untamable. He supposed it was better than getting his hair singed off by a blade made out of Hell’s Eternal Flame, so he’d get used to it.
A strange whisper caught his attention, somewhere at the back of his attention span. Nathaniel. Nathaniel. Nathaniel.
He felt the string on his soul be tugged on slightly and looked to Matt who was still chattering away about Exy - this would be awfully strange to explain when he got back - only to be summoned elsewhere.
When Neil came-to, he found himself in an apartment.
“There we go.” Andrew closed the Wesninski journal, satisfied. Neil looked around and observed many things: He was in Andrew’s bedroom, seeing as Andrew’s scent of woodpine and a sparked flame was strongest upon the unmade bed. The curtains were drawn over his windows: He had various plants across his dresser that curled and blossomed vivaciously, and countless books on spellcasting stuffed under the bed-frame. The other bed had to belong to Kevin, Andrew’s friend. His things were far more orderly, but with the cauldron and recipe books tucked under a shelf in the corner, Neil could tell the man was practised in alchemy.
“You may have made things a little awkward at home.” Neil said, relaxing the glamours he’d put on his appearance. Andrew knew what he really looked like: There was no point in trying to hide it. The man gave his figure a once-over when the mirage slipped off. “I was sitting on the couch with my roommate. I didn’t want to tamper with people and live up to my namesake, but I can’t have him going and exposing me, can I?”
“Roommate?” Andrew asked curiously, walking over to open the curtains of his bedroom window and brushing his fingertips across the leaves of the plants closest to him. They all shivered. It made sense that Andrew had mastered that dichotomy between life and death. He seemed like a man who appreciated balance.
“Well, I have to assimilate into human life somehow.” Neil said wryly. “He said his past roommate left to move out of state, but I’m pretty sure the guy died. Are all humans cagey around death? By the way, I’ve chosen the name Neil Josten. Do you like it?”
“What difference does my opinion make?” The man answered blithely.
“None.” Neil shrugged.
Andrew paused momentarily. “I’m not cagey around death. But I’m one of the rare ones.” He looked up at Neil. “You should meet Renee.”
“Was that why you’ve called me here?”
“I called you here because I was bored and I want to spook Kevin when he gets home in -” Andrew checked his watch. “Forty three seconds. Now that I think about it, showing you off to Renee is a horrible idea. She’ll lecture me on responsibility.”
“I’m not a trophy to be shown off.” Neil put his hands on his hips. “Although it was very miraculous you managed to figure out even half of my father’s ridiculous glyphs and encrypted ritual pre-tasks. Huh.” He cocked his head. “Maybe I am - what did Matt call it? A trophy-wife?”
Andrew seemed to choke on something, even though Neil hadn’t noticed him eating. “Matt?” He asked.
It was too late: Kevin burst into the room in a flurry of movement and energy.
“Fuck!” He cried out, scrambling for purchase against the bedroom door he’d fallen against at seeing Neil. “What are you doing here?”
“Not sure, really.” Neil answered and pointed to Andrew. “Ask him.”
“You willingly summoned it? Again?” Kevin demanded. “Andrew, you’re going to be the death of us all!”
“Untrue.” Neil supplied. “You humans always seem to die because of disease. Whether that be infectious or non-infectious. Although, I could cause a plague.” He glanced at Andrew. “If that’s what you want.”
“Tempting, but no.” Andrew said flatly. “I wanted to make sure you weren’t causing trouble, is all.”
“How considerate.” Neil cooed, waving his fingers. “Anyway, can I head back? I have to fix things up with Matt now that he’s seen me vanish in the middle of a conversation.”
“Sure,” Andrew said, waving his hand dismissively.
Neil waved Kevin goodbye. “Nice seeing you.”
“Right.” The man said, weakly. “Nice seeing you too.”
With a definitive pop! Neil was back in his living room, sitting by Matt.
“Hey!” Matt crowed, throwing his phone away. “You’re back! I mean, you could have told me instead of vanishing mid-conversation, but I’m glad either way!”
All Neil could manage was a flat “What.” before Matt scrambled for his phone once more.
“Yeah, Dan! He’s back. You owe me ten bucks: I told you there was something witchy about him!”
Huh. Neil Josten, a witch.
He could work with that.

Imagine how much of a wreck Morgan’s parents are when she goes on her first date
morgan has a resting bitch face, just like kevin.  and people at school know exactly who she is, and who her father is.  morgan kayleigh day is a force to be reckoned with.
especially on the court.
and one weekend when kevin is free, he and neil get talked into going to the court- her high school, that is, to do some drills.  some raven turned fox drills.
except kevin and neil have a habit of calling out in french to one another, and since morgan grew up learning both english and french she easily falls into that when practicing with them.
despite her easy talent with the sport, she’s always had the advantage of the majority of her family, on kevin’s side at least, being involved with exy.
it’s when she’s locking the court doors afterwards that she catches a kid sitting in the stands.
she stops.  “were you here the whole time?”
he looks up, and it’s one of the kids from her team, josh.  “no, just towards the end.”  he shuts his notebook.  “sorry, i wasn’t spying or anything, i just... i don’t like studying at the library.”
for midterms, he must mean.
“you’re weird.”  but morgan smiles and wipes her face.  “you can join next time, if you want.  they’re both strikers.”
josh smiles, and shrugs.  “i dunno.  that’s like asking a three year old to cook for gordon ramsey.”
jesus, he’s a dork.
“who cares?  the point in practicing is to get better, anyway.”  she starts for the gym doors.  “i’ll be here next week at noon.”
she is, and josh comes again, but only watches while he does some homework and takes notes.  mainly on neil.
and two weekends after that, he’s geared up on the court by the time morgan rolls in with her father and uncle behind her.  and today, andrew’s with them.
josh’s face goes white until he sees andrew retreat to the stands instead of the court.
“you’re playing with us.”  morgan sounds surprised.  she kind of is.  josh is quiet, and shy, both of which her family is not.  she didn’t ever expect him to actually join them.
he just shrugs.  “if i do bad then i was never here.”
“deal.”
josh doesn’t do terrible.  he gets lots of criticism from kevin, not too much from neil.  but that’s because he plays more like neil, heart over head.
but josh also sucks up every ounce of help and suggestions and tips offered and puts them to use with ease.  he doesn’t waste time with the switch from how he played to how kevin is telling him to play instead.
“you play like josten.”
josh pauses.  “really?”
“how he played when i recruited him in high school,” he corrects.  “you play like like it’s the last time you’ll play.”
he impresses their coach enough to let him start a game and play it fully halfway like the seniors all tend to do.
the game is on friday, but he’s right there with morgan and her dad on saturday.  it’s a lot of one on one while kevin “coaches” from the side.
morgan invites josh over on sunday.  they play table tennis in her basement while they talk about random things.
and then they start getting together more often.
and josh gets more playing time, which morgan likes, because he’s a reliable player and isn’t afraid to call for help when his mark is too much.  morgan’s seniors don’t do that and it infuriates her because then it’s her fault for not dropping her mark and helping out.
plus, josh calls “get them off” in fast french that morgan taught him, so his mark never sees her coming as a result.  it’s helped the team more than they realize.
and then josh starts getting invited over for lunch after going to the court.  he meets dalton, who grips his hand a bit hard when he shakes it because this is the kid that’s been making my daughter smile at her phone so often?
and then morgan goes to josh’s for dinner one time.
and at the winter banquet once the high school season is over, morgan sees josh standing outside after one of the guys comes in.
“bored?”
he’s startled.  “you too?”
“nah.”  she shrugs.  “just saw you out here.”
he turns, and his smile returns for a second.  “are you cold?”
“oh, no, it’s fine.”
“come on, morgs.”  he tosses his jacket to her.  and when she puts it on she joins him to lean against the balcony railing.
“how come they spend so much on a banquet we could’ve had in the gym?”
josh laughs.  “the aesthetic.”
morgan laughs, and knocks shoulders with him.  “i’m glad you liked to study at the court,” she says.
he smiles, and she’s smiling at him, and he just… he kisses her.  cause it’s quiet and it’s just them, hiding from everyone else.  and because he knows he’s a year younger than her but he likes her so much.
but morgan’s so shocked by it that when he pulls away she pauses.
the look on her face makes josh regrets it.  he flees.
morgan doesn’t go back inside for a while, but when she does josh is gone, and she can’t really leave the banquet because she’s a senior and a captain, but when she gets in her car afterwards she leans her head against the wheel.
she drives to josh’s house.
josh lives with his aunt and uncle because his mother died a few years back and his father is in prison.  his aunt answers the door.
fuck.  i should’ve thought this out.  “hi, i’m morgan, i’m on josh’s exy team, is he home?”  she asks.  “he left his jacket at the banquet.”
“oh!  thank you.”  she takes the jacket, and morgan panics when it seems like their business is finished.
“can i talk to josh?”
the aunt nods and calls his name, and when josh comes up behind her he ushers her away.  he steps outside and closes the door behind him.  “hey.”
“hey, sorry for freezing up earlier-“
“no, you did nothing wrong.  i shouldn’t have kissed you.“
morgan’s mouth fishes open a little as he rambles on.  “you can,” she says.  “kiss me again... if you want.”
josh stops.  what?  “do you really want that?  we can be friends instead, i can get over it.”
“no, i’m serious.”  she frowns.  “um, i like you.  sorry, i just, i’m not forward with stuff like this, so i never said anything.”
josh smiles, and when he doesn’t make a move, morgan steps forward and kisses him instead.  just a small one.  short and sweet.
but josh slides a hand to her waist and chases after her mouth to pull her back in.
“will you go out with me?”
it’s morgan that asks, faces close and hearts pounding.  it takes josh by surprise, a bit.  she can tell, but he rallies and doesn’t let it bruise his ego that the girl asked the guy out.  he actually likes it, thinks it’s nice.
“yeah, can i take you out?”
“like... on a date?”
“what else would you expect?”
“i don’t know.”  she shrugs.  “just never been on a date before.”
josh takes her out the next day, saturday.  and because morgan doesn’t want her dads making a big deal, she only tells them an hour before she gets picked up.  “i’m going on a date.”
kevin coughs on his drink, but dalton looks delightfully surprised.  “with who?”
morgan shuffles her foot.  “josh?”
kevin wipes his mouth.  “on your team?  the one we know?  that one?”
“don’t make a big deal out of it.  if you act weird then i’m not going.”
kevin shuts his mouth.  he looks at dalton when she continues down the hall.  “she’s going on a date?!”
“that’s what she says.”  dalton sits next to him on the couch.  “you’re freaking out,” he mumbles and kisses him.
“yeah, within reason though, right?  our daughter is going on a date.”
okay.  dalton sighs.  “kev, not to alarm you, but there’s also a good chance she’s kissed a boy by now, too.  she’s seventeen.”
kevin frowns.  “going on a date is different.”
dalton raises a brow, but ultimately kisses his cheek before getting up to go to the kitchen.
kevin is the one who answers the door to josh, who looks startled for a second before schooling his expression.  “hi, kevin.”  he doesn’t know whether he should call him mr. day like he did when he first met him, but once he became a regular with practicing with him and morgan on the weekends, kevin told him to ditch the mr. day.
“hey, josh.  you’re here for morgan?”
dalton texts morgan that josh is here.  for josh’s sake.
“yes, sir.”
kevin nods.  “i like you, josh.  don’t fuck that up, yeah?”
“absolutely.  i-i won’t, i promise.”
morgan slides past kevin and kisses his cheek before spitting quick russian.  “leave him alone, dad.  we’re heading out, love you.”
“bye josh!”  dalton calls with a smile from the hall.  morgan is pulling him by the arm, though, so he just waves.
“have her home by eleven!”  kevin says.  and in french, “be safe, don’t do anything stupid!”
“bye, dad!”
dalton shuts the door.  “she’s fine.  they’ve hung out before.”
“yeah,” kevin’s pouty.  he follows dalton up to their room.  “but that’s still my baby.”
