The Iceberg of Online Manga - A Reading List and Print Wishlist

We get a lot of manga in English, but that's only the tip of the iceberg. We get a hell of a lot of fan translated manga, but even that doesn't cover the whole thing. Separated by language and culture, the "untapped" potential of manga is foreign to a lot of readers, myself included really. But it's because of that deficiency that I decided to start taking a look at interesting fan translated titles to find series to recommend to publishers (and potentially read), so this is a sneak peek into my ever-growing list.

It's also an open request for people to share their favorites from the online manga sphere! As a single person it's impossible to find all the hidden gems, so being able to share titles between one another can really help widen horizons.

Sui and Neri of the Twilight Planet / Tasogare-Boshi No Sui To Neri

In a way, it reminds me of Girls Last Tour, a sunsetting planet that explores the oddity of a du in their life. Not quite as bittersweet or contemplative through what I've seen so far, but still very pretty and detailed. Lots and lots of hand drawn background art, and some really good layouts and paneling.

Poison Poison Forest Forest /Doku Doku Mori Mori

Mushroom on Mushroom violence, with a healthy side of grim visuals. It's got all the punch you could expect, and has a pretty novel approach to what you could consider a revenge story. Still early on so not a mountain of stuff to go off of, but at the very least what there is is good.

Captain Momo's Secret Base / Momo Kanchou No Himitsu Kichi

Tsuruta Kenji, the mastermind behind the art of Emanon (and other series), need I really say more? Regardless, with Tsuruta's art behind a lighthearted and curious series of a woman travelling through space alone with a cat, it's an undeniably enjoyable ride. Though do be warned, there is quite a bit of nudity featured as Momo prefers going commando to wearing clothes.

Every Every Night / Yona Yona Yona

An incredibly strikingly designed robin hood-esque story, Yona and her crew go on nightly missions to try and steal back art that was originally stolen by a corrupt police force. Creative, expressive, fun, and impressively detailed and unique, it's got quite a bit of potential!

The Feared Witch of Tasihou / Taishou Kitan Majo

Mixing the Western practices of Witchcraft with a Taishou-era Japan setting? A cultural combination that I'm truthfully surprised we haven't really seen yet. Add onto that the incredibly unique and sketch-like art style (and the wonderful color pages) and it's just a super easy pickup.

Welcome to Hotel Metsäpeura / Hotel Metsäpeura e Youkoso

A little hard to explain succinctly, but this is the story of a trio, two men and a teenager who they find standing outside their hotel in the Finnish wilderness in the middle of Winter. Characters with... interesting pasts, it's a story about providing not just a house, but a home to this young boy on his own.

The Ends of A Dream / Yume no Hashibashi

This is one that I'm really quite desperate to get in print. It's an emotional story of a pair as they retrace their forbidden romance through the years that have evaded them as they reach the end of their lives. A painfully beautiful concept that I really hope to see licensed someday.

Will You Clean This For Me? / Kirei Ni Shitemoraemasuka

Alright, something a little more light and fun! A story of a laundry (though it's really sorta general cleaning) shop as they go about their daily life, even offering a few tips and tricks to better cleaning things. Simple idea that has some pretty clear care put into it, and is just the right thing to relax with.

Amber Days and Golden Nights / Kohaku no Yume de Yoimashou

Let's keep the good vibes rolling! Another specific interest series, this time about craft beer. Kenzaki Nana's a burnt out employee at a Kyoto advertising firm, but happens to stumble across the Shirokuma bar. With just one night she ends up pulled into the world of craft beer, and our story begins! Very fun and light, and a really cool area to see explored by manga.

The Dragon, The Hero, and The Courier / Ryuu to Yuusha to Haitatsunin

Nothing like some good old comedy at the expense of someone else. Yoshida, a half elf, is a mail carrier for the Imperial City of Idazig that will deliver mail to anyone, anywhere. With the breadth of fantasy and middle-ages history expressed early on, there's a lot of creative potential for humor alongside the really wonderfully scratchy and sharp art.

Deep Sea Aquarium Magmell / Magmell Shinkai Suizokukan

My friend Phantom would kill me if this wasn't on the list. Anyways, it's a series about a deep sea aquarium employee in Tokyo. Very cool, very informal, and incredibly beautiful. I love how much they work with blacks and darkness in the art.

A Coffee Shop in the Unwaking Town / Samenai Machi no Kissaten

I love stories that are incredibly odd and quiet, and this is no exception. Suzume one day finds herself unable to wake up, stuck in the unwaking town Lutetia. It's in this town that she works at the coffee shop known as 'Quatre'. From the moment I laid eyes on it I knew I'd enjoy it, a unique concept paired with standout art, it has such a comfortable feeling to its experience (as well as offering a few recipes).

Living In an Antiquarian Bookstore of The Karakida Family / Karakida-ke no Kosho Gurashi

A simple story about three girls inheriting their grandfather's shop in the heart of the largest collection of used bookstores, Kanda-Jinbouchou. A very calm and borderline mundane story that is supplemented with some truly beautiful art.

And that's all this list has in it for now! Of course I've got more I can chat about, but I thought these to be the most promising in my perusing of the internet. Best of all though? All of these are available (to some degree) on MangaDex! If you want to give them a shot they're there. And really, do feel free to add to this list with your own online finds, I'd love to find all sorts of unique and creative manga that we don't get to hear about in the English sphere!

very glad eiji is sweeping that but im surprised no one submitted kenzaki. i love eiji dearly hes so special to me one of my favorite characters forever and ever. but if were being real kenzaki is more tragic as far as his character arc goes, im ignoring the ooo movie which shall not be named because its not canon to me and eijis character arc is entirely about learning to allow himself to accept help from his loved ones and to want things for himself and to let himself LIVE and WANT to live. whereas kenzakis character arc is devotion that corrupts in the most heartbreaking bittersweet way. you and the person you love the most can never be together. you save the world in doing this. you give him humanity while becoming a monster. also while were talkimg about tragic riders what about hongo my friend hongo and kazami mr his mom is dead and his dad is dead AND his little sister is dead.

rereading the hajime mpreg fic that is still one of my greatest works despite the bizarre premise and i think my two favorite lines from it are "Love and humanity had forced their way into him, torn him open and left him screaming, just as it had been when Kenzaki left" and "Baby names had been the furthest thing from his mind when he’d been writhing in the dirt and eating squirrels" which i think is real duality of writer stuff there

ah the 1 i think i already did it! BUT IMN GOING TO SAY IT AGAIN THE GALAXY MANGA IS very important to me. i bought it for my 16 birthday. or maybe the 15 one. i dont remember. i love yabuno tenya ALL OF HIS WORKS ARE GOOD except the ones i couldnt read because they arent translated. but they are probably good too.

14.Jikuu no kabe (Temporal wall) is without any doubt my favorite hissatsuI WAS OBSESSED., i was at some point in my life really obsessed with nemuro. and IT WAS A WILD RIDE. not talking about it but probably going to redraw some of the stuff i draw of him when i have time. well i just had to write about this hissatsu. I also like Ganymede Proton (Ganymede Ray) because i am weird about the planet Jupiter and its moons (i have really weird and specific special interests, as god intended it to be).

26.ozrock bitway, its one of my favorite characters, but i would also say kenzaki ryuuichi. I like the evil evil kind of villains. EVIL. like that.

One of my favorite little characterizing traits in Blade is just how much Kenzaki and Tachibana both like really care about their bikes and have an interest in them, so much so that Kenzaki’s blue biker gloves are like a defining character costume thing for him. It’s just a nice little touch that makes them feel more fleshed out

Thank you for sending an ask! You can definitely always send things about stuff we used to be in but are not as much anymore. I'm definitely not going to back down from an excuse to talk about Kamen Rider though haha

I'm going to do Hajime from Kamen Rider Blade just because I was working on a fic about him earlier, and I love him

My first impression of them

This is a bit weird because I did see the last episode of the show before anything else, and he's a lot more emotionally connected to people (specifically Kenzaki), and mostly I remember him looking like he's about to cry when asking Kenzaki not to leave. From watching the show in order though, he's just a gruff guy who loves two (2) people in the world (the single mom and daughter that he lives with and are basically his family now)

11. What’s the first thing you think about when thinking about the character?

I think I mostly just feel kind of sad? To this day I think my first thought is the really sad and desperate expression he makes in the last episode. Honestly I think my entire thought process is "Hajime!!! Hajime :((" when I think about him. His whole existence is a bit tragic (guy created to destroy the world but unfortunately happens to really like some of the people and things in it)

12. Sexuality hc!

Uhhh aroace-spec gay. He doesn't use those labels, but that roughly corresponds to what he is. I think he's in love with Kenzaki and that's about it (is there a sexual attraction element? idk, up to you). He doesn't know what he is doing or what is going on regarding his feelings for the most part. Maybe he could be attracted to other people, but honestly I don't think he cares enough about other people for it to go anywhere even if he was (yes he will fight monsters to save their lives, no he does not have any interest in talking to them). Plus I think there's an element of like, after everything Kenzaki did for him, is it even worth being into someone if they didn't swear to fight fate for him and then give up their life for him? (Honestly, I don't understand how romance or sexuality works, and I project this onto every single nonhuman character I encounter)

13. Your favorite friendship they have

I feel like the obvious choice here is Hajime and Amane. He may have killed her dad? Now he lives with this 9-10 year old and she draws pictures of them that he hangs up on his wall, and he would die for her and she would tear the world apart to find him if he left. He's not quite a father figure to her, but he's also not not one. She helped inspire a love of humanity and of being alive in him. But shout out to Haruka (widower who let this random guy live with her, and he clearly has Something up with him, but she won't press him about it. Absolutely 0 romantic tension between them despite him sort of parenting her daughter, what a dynamic) because I think there's a lot of potential there that people don't tap into much.

27. If they could meet a character from another show/movie/etc, who would be the most fun for them to meet?

I decided to challenge myself by not picking another Kamen Rider character. I honestly think maybe the Doctor from Doctor Who? It's been a while since I've seen that show, but they both have kind of a vibe of "immortal lonely men, the last of their kind but invested in humanity." They'd probably have a somewhat philosophical conversation and the Doctor might give him a bit of hope and encouragement, but they'd both be able to commiserate

I know Atsuhiro Inukai liked Kabuto, Renn Kiriyama liked Black, Takaya Yamaguchi liked Kuuga, Ryoma Takeuchi and Yukari Taki both liked Accel, and a whole lot of people liked Knight (including Shuichiro Naito, which became hilarious when he and Satoshi Matsuda became co-stars in that BL he was in).

The only one who likes Decade is Masahiro Inoue... and let's face it, he's basically this universe's version of Tsukasa

Sayaka’s Thoughts on Nerima Division

Aira Otonashi

“I haven’t met her but Kureha has told me a lot about her classmate, Aira. From what I heard, she sounds like a lovely young lady, not only that, but she’s the author of my favorite novel series, Vagabond Siren! I’ve never read anything that put me on such an emotional rollercosater as that novel and it still astounds me how someone so young could write something so profound. I don’t think it’s weird that she chooses not to speak, in fact, it reminds me of when I first met Kureha, she had such a hard time talking, albeit for different reasons….I guess that’s why I like this girl so much.” She laughs.

Mitsuru Tenjo

She looked at the photo of Mitsuru, a sympathetic smile on her face. “Ah, I remember when I watched this young lady preform. It was truly awe-inspiring, I could hardly look away and I’ll admit, I may have teared up a bit.” She laughed lightly. “The day when she was attacked was honestly the saddest I felt in a while, not only did I felt bad for her…but I could tell you that I knew exactly what she felt. The shock, hurt, anger, and most of all…the betrayal you feel…when your own sister is trying to take your life.” She frowned, “It’s shocking because you’d never think your own family is capable of something like that, it hurts because you love your sister so much despite her despising your existence, it makes you angry because you’ve never done anything wrong except existing and she still has the gall to take her own frustrations out on you and the betrayal is suffocating because I did everything you wanted! I stayed out of your way! I even quitted my dream job just so you could be happy and you still resented me! What did I do wrong, Ritsuko?! What do you want from me?!!!” She covered her mouth as tears dropped down her cheeks as she ran away off camera.

Katsumi Kenzaki

“I don’t really know much about sports but good for Katsumi for winning, especially at such a young age! I don’t know how she does it but I hope she’s taking good care of herself, I may not be knowledgeable about the Olympics but I do know that such a large competition like that has to be so demanding.”

Vivid Angels

“‘Vivid Angels?’ That’s a lovely name, I feel like it describes the three of them perfectly. I’m a bit saddened that they got roped into this as well, I sincerely hope that nothing bad happens to them and they get out of this unscathed…but knowing Chuuoku, there’s a slim chance of that happening.”

"Aira-chan is a really interesting person! I know she doesn't talk much, but I don't judge her for it! It's really interesting learn all the various hand signs needed to know what to say when you're speaking to her. It kinda reminds me of the ninja hand signs from one of my favorite anime shows! I know they're not technically the same, but you could create same new ninja hand signs with some of those!"

Mitsuru Tenjo

"I like watching Mitsuru-chan dance cause it reminds me of the dances you need to do in order to try to summon spirits from the underworld! Granted, they don't always work, but I'll get it right someday! But I really do like watching her do her ballet dances in some of the school events we have! I could never do that. Not only cause I don't know the first thing about dancing, but I'm liable to hurt not only myself, but someone else too!"

Katsumi Kenzaki

"Katsumi-chan, for some reason, doesn't like hanging out with me much. When I tried to talk to her, she just screamed and ran off at the sight of me, which, I'll admit, left me feeling a little sad and confused! Later, Mitsuru-chan explained that Katsumi has a fear of the paranormal. Mainly, ghosts or spirits. That's sad. I'm sure if she just saw and spoke with a ghost, she'd see their not scary! Like Kanade-chan! ...I know! I'll invite her out for a night out of ghost hunting! That'll show her ghosts are creepy! I'll invite her next time I see her! ...Provided she doesn't run away again."

Vivid Angels

"I like all the members of this team! It really sucks that we may have to face them in the D.R.B. though. I wonder why they're entering. They don't seem to be interested. ...But then again, does any team when they first get an invitation? ...But I'm sure they'll be fine! All three of them are good friends like us, and as long as they look out for each other, they'll have nothing at all to worry about!"
