"zk is mostly katara-centric" first off, so what? And secondly, we love them both equally. Katara gets more hate than any of the other characters. As a brown girl, she can't get too emotional. She can't bloodbend because then she'll be "evil", and she can't be nuanced or too complex.

Outside of zks and the occasional Katara stan, who else is gonna ride and die for her character?? Casual fans who don't even remember what happened in the show?? Antis?? Just shut up already, you sound like a broken record.

Something I’ve noticed in my 10+ years of being an Avatar fan is how at the very beginning I can remember Katara being a unanimously loved character for reasons such as her bending prowess, compassionate nature, and strong will despite all of her personal trauma. Now I’m noticing in the days of the fandom resurgence, people are much more critical of her character? Like I’ve heard people label her as a trauma dumper amongst other things. It genuinely confuses me.

Hello anon!

Yes, it confuses me too. In the earlier days of Avatar, Katara seemed to be much more loved than now. I’ve seen many people call her annoying and almost all of those people came from the fandom resurgence. Katara does have flaws, like literally every other character on the show, but the things she gets hated on for I think are not fair.

The things I’ve seen Katara get most hated on for:

Mentioning her mother’s death

Not noticing Aang’s crush on her and having crushes on other guys that aren’t Aang

Arguing with Toph about Toph not doing anything to help the group get chores done

Being angry at Zuko after he joined Team Avatar

For being angry at Sokka and Aang for not supporting her wanting to find her mother’s killer

In my opinion, Katara should not get hate for any of those reasons. I’ll explain why for each reason:

Katara mentioning her mother’s death is part of her coping strategy. Kya dying was extremely traumatic to her, and talking about it is how she is able to cope with it. People forget that Kya died in Katara’s place, so she not only carried the trauma of seeing her mother dead, but also of the fact that her mother sacrificed herself for her. So hating Katara for that is just wrong.

It’s just extremely misogynistic to hate Katara for not noticing Aang’s crush on her and for “daring” to have a crush on other guys. Katara did not owe Aang any of her romantic feelings. And Katara is her own person who does not exist to cater to Aang’s feelings. So hating Katara for not returning Aang’s feelings is extremely wrong.

Katara comes from a culture where the community helps each other gets things done. Toph comes from an aristocratic family in which she had servants always doing everything for her. It’s understandable that they would clash on the subject of doing chores. Katara was right to want Toph to help, but I also understand why Toph didn’t want to. Still, I agree more with Katara because Toph was now part of a team. Therefore Katara shouldn’t get hate for that.

Katara had all the right in the world to be angry at Zuko. Zuko not only betrayed her in Ba Sing Se after she had shown him kindness, but it also led to the fall of Ba Sing Se, which was a huge blow to the Earth Kingdom and caused the sufferings of many innocent people. Yes Katara was mean to Zuko at times, but he deserved it. And after Zuko went to her directly and wanted to make it up to her and found a way to do so, she forgave him when she was ready. So Katara should not be hated for her anger at Zuko.

Katara wanted to feel supported by Sokka and Aang in this very important matter. And she didn’t. Yes it was wrong of her to snap at Sokka, but it came from feeling very hurt. Aang and Sokka just wanted her to forgive her mother’s killer, and Katara of course did not want to do that. I don’t blame Katara for being angry, she had always been the caretaker of the group and she was finally doing something for own well being, she needed to be supported and she wasn’t. So Katara should not get hate for that.

So those are the main reasons I’ve seen Katara get hated on and it’s all very unfair. Katara has flaws but many of the things she gets hated aren’t fair in my opinion. She deserves better!

If you're a bender, she uses her Chi Block on you

She's very giddy and loves being with you

She loves partying w/ you and taking you places

She doesn't want you to meet her sisters, in fear of you comparing them to each other

She wants to be herself with you

She's ecstatic and always energized

She always defends you when someone tries to make you look dumb

Unlike Mai, she would trade the other nations if they kidnapped you, because she loves you more than anything else in the world

Though, she is like Mai in the sense she'll betray Azula, because she loves you more than she fears her

Azula, Mai, Ty Lee, and Zuko

You were at first with Ty Lee

Though, you two were never official

You two just bonded better than the rest of them

Zuko and Mai became protective over you, seeing you repeatedly get hurt

Azula just saw you as stupid and she liked humiliating you

Zuko saw himself in you and wanted to protect you from Azula

^Mai was jealous at first, but soon realized you weren't enemies, but friends. You deserved to be protected from the monster that is Azula

You love Azula, because you've realized that she's never really had love in her life [It's more out of pity]

You go with them everywhere, though this gets you a lot hurt

They always get you, but then Azula becomes a little more anxious about letting you come

Azula would never tell you, but she loves you more than anything in the world and that scares her

Ty Lee just thinks your fun, but she doesn't really form a complex feeling for you. She just likes that you're fun

Mai and Zuko see themselves as your protector, especially against Azula. They kind of act like your parents, but they're both distant emotionally, but you definitely open them up

The GAang [Katara, Sokka, Aang, and Toph]

Katara was the first to fall for you, but not the first to tell you her feelings

It's probably Sokka who tells you

But you don't take it seriously, because he's a flirter

Toph is mean to you and is kind of like a big bully

Aang is nice and treats you like he's known you forever

You both just click so well

When Toph and Katara fight, you are brought into their fights, because they want you to be on their side

You don't want to catch that smoke

You're probably the most scared of Katara, she reminds you of a scary mother, but don't tell her, because she wants you to see her as a lover not a mother

It took you the longest to get close to Toph, because she has walls up and it's hard to get them down

You bring up her being blind and she get super angry and you quickly blush in embarrassment

^ You do try and watch it and be more considerate of her, but she also doesn't want you to treat her different. Just treat her like the rest. Once you do, she'll let you in

Aang and Sokka make fools themselves in front of you, because they're not good with crushes, no matter how smooth Sokka is

Though you do all get along better than the relationship with the fire nation group [Ty Lee, Azula, Zuko, and Mai]

i care him sooo much. whats dramatic abt him is that in his past life (in the angel/demon au) he had. a very shitty life and ended up taking lots of drugs as a mean to get on with life until he finally just. decided to stop trying to get on with like. also hes trans :) . so um killed himself by overdosing on drugs. its always a similar past/history with him so i think it's a bit tragic that while he suffered so much he can't just. end it like he did before because his power wont let him. as a human he would die of old age, but his power , while letting him suffer through any injury or subtence, won't let him die. i mean in the end he does find that living is pretty nice when you're surrunded by people you love and who love you so !!!!

im not quite sure how the ability works yet... i think it's a molecular manipulation of the flesh and any thing that compose it, so it would heal injuries, help fight infections, but it wouldn't be able to revive someone if life has already left them/if it was too far along. eden's power being inside of him, it unconsciously protects him from everything and anything as it happens, fixing the damage almost instantly.

it takes a lot out of him to use it on other people (to fix or destroy) and after the beheading incident he fears it so much he's unable to use it until he's about to lose someone precious to him....

belly and him get along well !!! they're in the angel squad together in the angel/demon au and they're supposed to be the two "level headed" ones (they're not they're barely adults with age being between 20 to 25) and work nicely as a team. im not very good to talk abt relationship between characters im sorry !

AU Ask Game

1.) Fire Nation Airbender!Izuku. How does Izuku handle the finding out about the sheer depth of the lying propaganda he has been fed? Specifically, seeing warcrimes the Fire Nation commits firsthand (a la Zuko Alone). Especially if his father was a Fire Nation

2.) Aizuku AU. Is Shirakumo a Soul Reaper, and if so, how’s he handling things? Especially if he ends up around Aizawa and Hizashi.

3.) Homeroom Teacher Nighteye. If Izuku isn’t transferred out of Nighteye’s class and thus decides to join Shiggy, how does that ultimately go? Does anyone in 1-A join him? How does Bakugo react? Does All Might blame Nighteye?

4.) Midoriya Tenko. How does the media react to the revelation of who this universe’s Shigaraki is? Does Endeavor remain a hero, or is he forced to resign in scandal? And where’s Dabi during all of this?

Airbender Izuku AU

In this verse he grew up in the capital and even went to one of the Fire Nation schools, so he was deep in it; especially when it came to the history of the Air Nomad Genocide and that it was Sozin who had no choice but to take out the Air Nation's Armies. So when he discovers his bending and is forced to run away, he is devastated when he realizes just how wrong it was.

Because Izuku was revealed to be an airbender and ran away instead of facing justice for his "crimes" his parents were made to face the crimes in his stead. Hisashi was executed while Inko was sent to a work camp. Whether she survives to the end of the war or not depends, it's very likely that she will be rescued.

Out of everyone in his squad, Bakugou was the one taken completely off-guard. Here they thought Izuku was just a non-bender, destined to remain as a foot soldier while Bakugou would go on to become a general or even an admiral. Now he gets pulled into a team dedicated to hunting Izuku, until he eventually gets recruited by Azula herself when Izuku inevitably joins Team Avatar.

Aang is super excited when he meets Izuku. He talks about everything he can teach. Just because Aang is still, in his mind, twelve doesn't mean he won't use his actual age to declare seniority over his new student. This amuses Katara while Sokka is a little wary, because Izuku did grow up in the heart of the Fire Nation.

Things get extra awkward when Zuko joins the team.

Aizuku AU

Yes, Shirakumo is a Soul Reaper here. It's actually funny, he technically became a Soul Reaper far faster than an ordinary Plus as it only took him about a year after his death to become a Soul Reaper. It was his drive to protect those he cares about, the ones he bound his Chain of Fate to, that allowed him to become one when his chain inevitably broke.

Ironically, Shirakumo was actually brought into the Fifth Division of the Gotei 13, under Captain Hirako Shinji. He hopes to one day master Hollowification and become a Visored like his Captain.

For a few years he was actually handling things pretty well. Even got the chance to go down in secret to see how his old friends were doing, though he sometimes regrets dying the way he did with how Aizawa handled it. Sometimes he curses at his old (boy)friend for being unnecessarily harsh on his students.

Unfortunately whenever he's in the Living World, he feels a tug on his soul. This is how he found out what happened to his body, and he is not happy with this at all. Unfortunately, he is not allowed to attack those of the Living World, only Hollows.

However, he soon finds a loophole on what to do with All for One~

Homeroom Teacher Nighteye AU; Bad Ending Edition

It goes absolutely horribly, for all except Tomura and Izuku.

All Might definitely blames Nighteye, but he also blames himself. In this verse, he would have regretted not fighting to get Nighteye out of UA sooner. He regrets not communicating with his successor better, regrets not seeing the signs. In a twist of fate, All Might himself decides to leave UA completely to find his student and either bring him to a better school...or join him.

Bakugou physically attacked Nighteye. For most of his time he held himself back because he figured Izuku would have found a way to brush off Nighteye's words, or that someone would step in. He knew it wouldn't be appropriate if he himself stepped in, because of his complicated history with Izuku. He doesn't care if he gets expelled for punching out a teacher, the bastard had it coming.

Kirishima, Mina, Kaminari, Momo, and Tokoyami all follow Izuku. At that point, after seeing first-hand how horrible Nighteye could be, they lost all faith in UA and vowed to help Izuku in whatever way they can.

Just like in the planned ending for the actual fic, Nighteye gets fired and Tomura gets his hands on him. On the bright side- Tomura does not get the AfO Quirk because Izuku flat out says "Hey, this seems like a bad idea."

Midoriya Tenko

The media are appalled, to the point where they demand Endeavor resign. They don't care what everyone else says, this man drove his own child into villainy!

Dabi is in complete shock at that dramatic reveal. He did not know who Shigaraki really was, and now that he knows who it is...he actually does a fucking heel-face-turn and joins the Heroes because "Surely this means Dad will know his mistake and want me back!"

Endeavor stays a Hero, though he is on thin ice with the public. It's to the point where he only appears to take down villains and doesn't bother with interacting with anyone else. He even buys a small apartment for himself so people will quit going to his house to harass his family.

Tenko and Izuku both come to Endeavor's defense, hoping to remind the people of his actions as a Hero and how his personal life should not impact his work. Especially with all the lives he has saved, and all the ways he helped them both.

All for One is very pleased with how this reveal went down, even while stuck in Tartarus.

hi!! how are you!! great chapter- i think i'm in the minority but i like the cliffhangers you keep putting in lol. it makes it exciting!!!!!!

but anyway- i am very excited for a bit of a dynamic shift with shen and suki traveling with them now...zuko n sokka have a pretty intimate ~friendship~ and now there's people seeing it without a tent barrier? also one of those people is suki (love her btw) who sokka definitely held (or still holds idk) romantic feelings for? PLUS i've loved how everyone has different levels of information from the start of the story, but with shen being the ONLY ONE who doesn't know zuko's true identity/name and that he can shoot fire from his hands definitely makes this little squad very interesting. (also shen getting so angry and frustrated and fighting w zuko while sokka knows exactly whats going in zuko's head and thinking how he's missed zuko's feistiness? great. love that for them.)

hope zuko is okay and hope sokka doesn't beat himself up too much over being frozen in fear at seeing ro and not running after/protecting his bf and hope katara gets so many hugs.

ughazula on ig and i’s convo abt azula, facts:

the post: “be honest, do you really think she got what she wanted,” referring to the “i got everything i wanted” audio by billie eilish that they used for an azula edit.

me: she didn’t even want anything that big or greedy, all she wanted was for the people she loves to love her back, to be actually cared about and trusted. to be the source of someone’s pride and happiness.

ughazula: NO LITERALLY, her trauma’s more emotional than physical so obviously people would bring up her (inexcusable) actions to ignore it... like bestie, zuko and azula were equally abused, only in different ways, WAKE UPP 🔥🔥

me: yeah and if we’re gonna hold her accountable for all she’s done then let’s hold everyone else accountable too!! zuko has raided entire villages just to capture a 12 year old for reasons that benefited him and only him. the gaang have literally killed people before and it doesn’t matter if their intentions were noble because all azula did was for her father and nation too, switching perspectives and all she did was good intentioned too.

me: iroh legit held ba sing se under siege for 600 days where many people died and the gaang (esp toph) as well as zuko went around scamming and stealing from people. meanwhile azula captured ba sing se without hurting ANYBODY, she threatened people a lot sure, but did she ever really kill people? and im sure if she had wanted to kill iroh when she zapped him, he would’ve died, but she didn’t aim for the kill and instead just K.Oed him

ughazula: ure so right, perspective is extremely important when it comes to these things. azula had no external influence apart from ozai so she believed that what she was doing was right and was for her nation, and I’m more than sure it was too much to take in that after everything she’s done it wasn’t enough. and yes she isn’t the only character who’s done bad things, iroh even laughed about burning an entire city!! it pisses me off the the fandom demonizes azula the most when she’s literally the youngest from the fire nation and never got a chance to be out of ozai’s influence, they want her to die already even if iroh redeemed himself around his 40-50s and they praise him because most his screen time was already post redemption, when he was helping zuko

Pretty sure a lot of Todomomo content being racist and misogynistic can easily be traced back to Shouto being Zuko in a different font and thus attracting Zutara shippers who wanna dub Momo as his Katara(she's not,she's Ty Lee,and in fact she's Katara's opposite in almost every way).Like the asian stereotypes?Erasing the female character's in it personality to just 'girl'?The baseless love triangles based off cisheteronormativity?The oversexualization of minors?Pure Zutara Core

It really upsets me how dismissive people are on Katara’s trauma. All those comments about her being “annoying” feel a bit shallow to me if we take in account how important is her mom’s death for her identity.

Katara and Sokka’s mother was killed during a fire nation raid in which they were searching for the last waterbender. She died while defending and hiding her so in a way Katara always blames herself and carries that burden which reflects in her identity in several ways.

First of all she is really trying to learn to waterbend by herself and every time she gets the chance tries to improve it even through “controversial actions” like stealing from the pirates (which I personally didn’t find controversial but the show somehow portrayed it that way).

She is always protecting and taking care of everyone in the group in a motherly way and for me that’s just her way to show she cannot afford losing someone else (which is shown both during their daily tasks and their attacks against the fire nation).

And finally she’s openly emphatic every time war’s trauma is brought up by another character trying to make people feel understood and actually getting that need because she felt it herself. I like how when she’s telling everyone how their loss is not their fault as a way to remind herself it was not her fault either.

So yea I just think it is really cool and not annoying that Katara gets experience trauma in those ways
