💥BREAKING NEWS💥
Tumblr media
New beginnings
"I have served my father's country for long enough. I feel I must now give the lowlands what is rightfully theirs," says the young, soon-to-be ex-guitarist. The news comes as a shock after the band’s latest European tour.
"K3 has helped me get through some really heavy times. I remember how difficult life sometimes got during Eurovision, and the lyrics ‘Zijn we niet allemaal, unicorns en dolfijnen?’ (Translation: ‘Are not all unicorns and dolphins?’) were really the only thing that helped me push through."
Guštin was chosen without selection as his stage persona is exactly what the group had been missing. How the colour pink compliments him might have also been one of the main factors. Kris is to replace the girl group’s brunette Marthe De Pillecyn, a move which should put a stop to speculations about whether the famous Slovene is blonde or brunette.
Growing up between nations
This move is not only historic for the small country of Slovenia, which will certainly be saddened by the news of their most popular band prematurely ending their career, but also for Belgium and the Netherlands. The band K3 has up until this point been exclusively reserved for individuals of either Dutch or Belgian descent. But their newest member has roots in the lowlands.
“I still remember when I was a little kid and my mum, who is Dutch, would play ‘Oya Lele’ on repeat. I didn’t quite understand it back then, but it grew on me. Since then, it has been a bit of a wet dream to become a part of the power girl group.”
Moving on
The news about Guštin's integration into the Dutch-Belgian girl band comes just moments after Cvjetićanin's revelation regarding his relocation to Finland, which raises questions within the music community, prompting speculation on the potential interconnection between these two significant developments.

However, the move has generally been met with praise from the general audience. Some Baby Boos (fans of the band Joker Out) have even already switched to become fans of the new and improved K3. Hopefully, the K3 merch does not sell out too quickly.

@somewhere-in-the-dungeon asked:
What are the good pathfinder adventure paths? (I haven't read any of them)
These are my impressions from reading them (not playing them) and are biased by my preferred style of play:
Rise of the Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings: Fairly solid, a good mix of social encounters, combat, and dungeon delving
Kingmaker 1 - Stolen Lands: This is the only adventure I have played. I am not a fan of hex crawls generally and this one felt particularly aimless. A lot of the stuff it does is setup that shines in later adventures, but it is a roughhhh start
K2 - Rivers Run Red: Hexploration is still too aimless, but the nation building mechanics help a lot with that, and there are some clever interactions between the two
K3 - The Varnhold Vanishing: Feels like the AP really hits it's stride here, much more direction in the hexploration. Would actually run this one
Carrion Crown 1 - The Haunting of Harrowstone: The town events and dynamics are actually quite neat, but they never really go anywhere. The stories of the spooky prison also didn't feel like they built on each other to become more than the sum of their parts. This is exacerbated by each part of this AP taking place in a different location which means almost nothing here can be built on. If the whole AP stayed in this one town which reacted to what you did this would actually be amazing. As it is, 5/10
CC 4 - Wake of the Watcher: Good lovecraftian fun, would run
CC 6 - Shadows of Gallowspire: A gauntlet with not a lot of story. Way too many liches, which I feel cheapens them. The rules for the gallowspire itself are neat tho
Shattered Star 1 - Shards of Sin: Got like five pages into this one and had to put it down. The first encounter just felt so cliché and manipulative. Maybe it gets better later
Mummy's Mask 1 - The half-dead city: The first half is a functional pyramid-delve that unfortunately has literally nothing to do with the rest of the AP. The second half has another pyramid-delve where the PCs accidentally stumble across the path of the McGuffin with little understanding of why it might be important, it didn't seem engaging as a hook. I believe that gets fixed in MM2, but it leaves this adventure feeling very hollow
Iron Gods 1 - Fires of Creation: Like Expedition to the Barrier Peaks this one felt gimmicky and "clever" in a way I would find frustrating as a player. A matter of taste. Unfortunately it also comes with a whole bunch of new and somewhat cumbersome rules to use
Agents of Edgewatch 1 - Devil at the Dreaming Palace: This one was solid, but felt like there was a lot of filler? Stage seemed to half twice as much stuff in it as necessary. Maybe this is fun at the table and helps fill out the fantasy of being detectives, but it was a frustrating read
Abomination Vaults 1 - Ruins of Gauntlight: Top 2 adventure, going to be running it next week! A megadungeon that cuts straight to the point, has a lot of interesting encounters as well as consequences that carry over between encounters, and narratives that crisscross it
AV2 - Hands of the Devil: I liked the sidetracking back to the town, felt very The Whispering Cairn, it is a pity none of the town stuff has consequences or follow-up down the line. The dungeon levels themselves kind of drag, feeling like there is maybe too much filler. You could probably cut out a third of it, a whole dungeon level's worth (and I would love to play it then)
AV3 - Eyes of Empty Death: Like AV2, but without the town side quests. Would probably slap as two levels instead of three
Fists of the Ruby Phoenix 1 - Despair on Danger Island: Another kind of aimless-feeling hexploration, and the dinner scene feels far too long when reading it (maybe it plays better)
FotRP 3 - King of the Mountain: A lot of nice payoffs to previous setup, the Celestial Dragon quest felt like it had slightly too many steps. Campy, bordering on self-parody at times. Whether that is a good or a bad thing is a matter of taste
Strength of Thousands 1 - Kindled Magic: Got five pages into this one and put it down because it was roleplay-heavy and I was looking for something combat focused. Those pages were amazing though and I'd recommend playing it. Kind of the opposite of Shards of Sin?
Quest for the Frozen Flame 1 - Broken Tusk Moon: This one starts off very slow and then moves into two bits of mediocre hexploration. The hexploration is better than that in Stolen Land due to the leadership mechanic and having something to run away from
QftFF 2 - Lost Mammoth Valley: Top 2 adventure, I think it loses out to Ruins of Gauntlight due to being the second adventure in a path rather than the first. An actually good use of hexploration, each part builds on the others. Good variety. I would have liked more opportunities to gain Reputation Points in the valley, it seems like grinding them out at the end would be a pain. And not letting the tribe participate in the battle at the end feels like a missed opportunity
QftFF 3 - Burning Tundra: It's fine. Leadership score really only gets used twice in the whole AP and that sucks? The hexploration in the middle seems like filler content. Overall fine though, better than most on this list
Honorable Mention - Emerald Spire Superdungeon: While not an adventure path it is similar in size in content. Unlike most megadungeons I've read (looking at you Dungeon of the Mad Mage) it largely keeps up the variety and pacing throughout. It does this by having each level be written by a different author and giving them more or less free rein. Megadungeons feel like they'd be a slog to me, but if I were to run any of them (besides Abomination Vaults) it would be this

HTGAWM Finale Thoughts
(obviously contains spoilers)
BONNIE AND FRANK. WHY?? for WHAT purpose? i’m so so so angry. their deaths were actually for nothing, and they were finally about to be happy. i liked them together, they both deserved a good ending. i’m pissed abt this
the whole incest story line about Sam & Hannah being Frank’s father came from nowhere and was completely unnecessary. they rlly sprung that on us in the final few episodes for what? for nothing. it added nothing, it only explained Frank’s death which was also unnecessary. this plot annoyed me.
connor & oliver’s relationship in the final episode was so poorly written. seriously? threatening each other with divorce? why? i’m glad they stayed together but i’m mad that was this a part of the finale instead of showing them soaking up their time together before connor went to jail (which i get helps him with his guilt but i still don’t think he deserved it). i wish they had just let them be happy, instead of having connor actually present oliver with divorce papers. i thought it was a poor way to conclude a relationship that spanned the seasons and the fans loved.
don’t get me started on Michaela. she always had Connors back, and I get she always has hers first, I still think her negotiating probation & leaving connor out to dry was out of character. She ended up alone, her best friends either in jail or refusing to talk to her. I hated her ending, she deserved so much better, especially after Ashers death. She got to be a judge, I guess, but I wanted more for her. i’m upset about this, she was one of my fave characters even if season 6 did her dirty.
i guess its realistic that the k5 (or k3 i guess bc two are dead) doesn’t talk anymore, but I wish they did. they went through so much together. I get Laurel not talking to the other two, as she disappeared the last season and chose being a mom which is understandable, but Connor and Michaela? They were best friends, who loved each other so deeply. I don’t like that they all went their separate ways- i think the two of them could’ve stayed friends. Even just to make viewers happy, yk?
Why did they kill Asher too? They killed him & sent Laurel away, and it resulted in all of season 6 feeling like Connor, Michaela and Oliver’s interactions were incomplete. They were missing someone- two people- but I think it was dumb to not include both Asher and Laurel in the final season. I thought both plots were unnecessary, I think the writers should’ve kept one of them for the final season.
WHY WAS NATE THE ONE W THE BEST ENDING? i’m sorry he started out innocent and then lost that- killing Miller and Xavier pissed me off. I don’t have sympathy for him, and i’m mad he got the best ending??? ugh
I am glad Annalise and Tegan ended up together tho. that was cute. i liked the parallel with Christopher as well.
DONT GET ME STARTED ON THE AGE MAKEUP HAHAHAH. WHY DID EVE LOOK YOUNGER THEN LAUREL??? I HATED IT.
overall, I didn’t like this finale. I loved this show, stuck with it when it got slow, stuck with it for 6 seasons, and the finale just made me sad for how the characters ended up, instead of sad that the show ended. I’m most mad about Bonnie, Frank and Michaela. the others were meh, but those three endings make me incredibly mad.

K3 Sisters Band
A Band Revolution
by Isadora Barnett
TikTok has allowed artists and creatives alike to create platforms that they have full control over. The K3 Sisters Band is one of the amazing groups that have gained a massive following of 2.1 million on TikTok and 66K on Instagram in under a year. With multiple TV interviews, these women have no doubt captured the public eye. However, they have been creating music for years. The K3 Sisters Band is a female led band created by Kaylen, Kristen, and Kelsey Kassab.
The sister trio grew up in Texas, where their parents heavily influenced their love of music. Learning instruments their entire lives, family and music have always coincided. This is why they call their fans the K3SBFAM (K3 Sister Band family). Fan interaction has become the basis of everything for K3SB, as they have spent 24 hours live streaming just to show their commitment. Besides having musical talents these sisters are their own sound and lighting engineers. Working to curate online concerts that are said to be completely unpredictable, because no show is ever the same.
Some themes that are generated by the K3SB are ones of love, acceptance, and Harry Potter! Their motto is “I will always believe in myself and celebrate my life and the lives of others. I will respect the music of others and the customs of others as long as they are not harmful to anyone. I will stand against bullying of any kind and choose love over hate.”
Many parents have reached out, talking about how their music and loving presence have helped their children during hard times. They have a zero-hate policy and work to stand against bullying – most recently with their song “Sticks and Stones.” These sisters have created a family and safe space for everyone.
When it comes to Harry Potter this is just another way to connect with fans. As they share their own personal love for the fandom through cosplay, songs, and covers.
The K3 Sisters see themselves as entrepreneurs; women with “something to say.” Their platforms have generated a business that they hope to only grow. They recently became a part of the TikTok Billion Dollar Creator Fund. 💞Tight Hearts (Idol!Hoseok x Reader)
Plot: The red string of fate was visible when our grandparents were children. They would play around, following the strings from one person to their soulmate and laugh happily when these two people inevitably found each other. It was a reason for happiness. But little by little, people stopped seeing the threads. In bad times, it was dangerous, it was a liability, so people stopped seeing them to protect each other from harm. When I was born, nobody saw them anymore, they just felt their soulmate. Anxiety, happiness, sorrow, love, the hearts of the soulmates are one, feel the same things, but it is almost impossible to find your soulmate, now that the threads cannot be seen.

Tight Hearts Masterlist
TEASER #2
Tumblr media
My name is Y/N. I was born in 1994. My early years were common for a little girl, I guess. My teenage years and my early twenties, however, were the most turbulent period of my life, that I remember. Not because my life was particularly bad, but because the emotions that flooded me constantly had me laughing one moment and crying the next one. My heart felt tight all the time, feelings of dread, uncertainty and stress clouding my everyday life since I turned fourteen or fifteen. I can’t really remember because the change was something gradual. I started feeling excitement and euphoria most of the time, a rush through my veins that pushed me forward most times, further than I was willing to go on my own. That was around the time I started dancing. My body felt so tired, and yet those feelings, that at the time I didn’t know were coming from my soulmate, made me stand up and repeat the routines once and twice and many times over. My soulmate, wherever they were, were encouraging me endlessly and giving me the will and strength I lacked.
At the time I didn’t think anything of this. I thought soulmates were a myth, you see. People in my family belonged to a group that had grown sceptical of the soulmate system after there was no visible proof to assert that the threads were still present, tied around out pinkies, no proof whatsoever that now person had to be tied forcefully to another just because a little red thing told them to. These people saw this as an opportunity of self-determination; they could choose who to spend the rest of their lives with. Finally, if you felt something for someone, you could act on it, without the fear that his thread left their chest in the total opposite direction to you. Many people hit the jackpot and found someone decent with whom they could laugh and live. Others weren’t so lucky and ended up in loveless marriages, abused or on the street because of a costly divorce. If that was the world where soulmates were still present, but the threads couldn’t be seen, I didn’t want to have anything to do with it.
I don’t remember the exact day when that Idol group caught my eye, either. I just know that I felt so special, so connected to them. Their success was mine, and so were the disappointments and the heartbreak. I was beginning to think my soulmate was a fan as well because my heart hurt so much when they were in pain, and not even the doctors were able to tell me what was wrong. I wasn’t buying the soulmate scheme, like so many people around me told me. Or at least I wasn’t on the outside.
Because how beautiful, how good would it feel to have someone love you for who you essentially are? Someone who was made with me in mind. A person who would hold me when times became too much, and not only send me their feelings through an invisible connection that I would doubt most of the time, if it weren’t for the feelings I couldn’t account for. I wanted my soulmate to be here with me. But with the threads being invisible that is more than impossible, like taking a DNA test and guessing the results without actually seeing them.
So, yes. I will accept, only for the sake of not being a hypocrite, that I hoped in the deepest part of my soul that soulmates did exist. I yearned for mine to be someone I could hold onto for the rest of my life and never let go. But at the same time I must admit that the most rational part of my brain told me that it was not logical to live my life looking for love in someone I couldn’t identify and that would lead to my current predicament, living my life as a succession of boring days between the studio, my nondescript job and my tiny apartment. Oh, and a growing pain in my heart that no one can explain. A very basic life, if you think about it.
Tumblr media
Looking at himself in the mirror, he couldn’t for the life of him find anything wrong with his face, he didn’t look excessively tired, there were no bags under his eyes, no redness around his irises… and yet he felt like some animal had chewed him up while he was sleeping and spat him out. During rehearsals his hand wasn’t away from his chest more than five seconds, rubbing it helped with the tightness he had been feeling for a couple of days now.
His mind would go back to his grandmother, for some reason. He had been remembering all the stories that she would tell him when he was younger. The feeling of her hands, rough from many years of hard work, moving his hair back when he fell asleep while she spoke was something he didn’t think he would ever forget.
“If you keep looking at your reflection like that, you’ll die like Narcissus.” Namjoon’s joking voice reached his ears, taking his eyes away from the careful examination of his face.
“Ha… ha, very funny, Monnie.”
Picking up his bag, Hoseok followed his brothers to the cars waiting for them to take them to the hotel. Being on tour was really tiring, one day to the next, same tiring routine, same dull ache on his chest. Being so preoccupied with calming this pain, he didn’t notice how he caught the eye of the guys, sharing worried looks. It had been some time now since Hoseok had started feeling that pain. BTS, being together practically every single day, living in the same house, working on the same company, it was obvious that some of the six of them were bound to notice. Not knowing what was wrong with him, or how to help him was eating away at them.
Now inside the car, Tae and Joon couldn’t stop looking at him, his mouth set in a little triangle and his eyes closed, while his head rested against the cold glass. He hadn’t noticed the growing headache.
“This is getting out of hand, Hyung,” said Namjoon, taking out one of Hoseok’s earphones so that he would know they were talking to him. “Look at yourself, you need to see a doctor.”
Sighing, Hobi sat up and looked at his brothers. Worry was evident in their eyes, Joonie looking at him, and Tae avoiding eye contact as if his life depended on it.
“I told you already, Joonie. I don’t need a doctor. There is nothing wrong with me, my grandma used to feel the same way, so I know it’s nothing serious.”
“You’ve been talking an awful lot about your grandmother lately. What is it?” The leader asked him, not buying his act and being determined to find out the root of the problem.
“I’ve been thinking about some stories she used to tell me when I was little… That’s all, Namjoon. Just some stories about soulmates -“
Taehyung’s head jumped up and both Hoseok and Namjoon looked at him startled. When he had been avoiding any kind of eye contact with Hobi, now his eyes looked at him inquisitively and searching an answer that he already had, it looked like. His body was rock still, not paying any mind to the movement of the car. The hairs on the back of Hoseok’s head were standing and he felt that his throat was going dry.
After a long pause, where Taehyung seemed lost in his own world and the other two looked at him expectantly, the youngest breathed in, and out, and finally seemed to leave his trance.
“Is this a good moment to tell you that I can see the Red String of Fate leaving your chest and that I think that this discomfort of yours comes from your soulmate, or should I wait?”

Lim Kim Is Forging an Independent K-Pop Revolution - VICE Interview with Lim Kim
After leaving the K-pop system of big money and bigger expectations, Lim Kim found independence via crowdfunding.
On K-pop artist Lim Kim’s new album GENERASIAN there is no hidden meaning amongst the music. There’s no subtlety to her message — and that’s exactly the point. With lyrics like, “Asian girls sing like me / They singin’ like a queen” and “See who’s the fucking queen / We Yellow,” the 25-year-old enthusiastically turns her back on the mainstream K-pop industry, its big money and its factory-produced sound. Instead of lyrical metaphors she uses her words as battle cries, exploring and centring her identity as an Asian woman.
Originally rising to fame in 2011 from one of Korea’s biggest television singing contests, Superstar K3, she captivated fans with her dreamy voice and calm image, mostly singing love songs. She then left her prominent label Mystic Story in 2016 and began creating her albums independently. Her hip-pop style single, SAL-KI, released in May marked the beginning of a new direction for Lim Kim. Some people described the change as a revolution in K-pop. Others were shocked by the aggressive lyrics. Some applauded her for her courage and others lamented the move away from her earlier sound and style. But none of that bothers Lim Kim and her new album is a declaration that she is going to be herself. Coinciding with its release today i-D spoke to Lim Kim about her independent K-pop revolution.
Junhyup Kwon: Is there a message you wanted to deliver through this new album? Lim Kim: I wanted to show that people are okay with doing what they love. Our society always requires a precedent otherwise they dismiss it as wrong. And I also hope to show K-pop and Asian music’s diversity with the fact that there are many colourful artists here. This was the key message I wanted to deliver. Many were surprised because I changed my genre, but what I wanted to highlight is not the genre, but the message.
The album focuses a lot on your identity as an Asian woman, why did you want to centre that? People all around the world recently talked about the importance of diversity. But as an Asian, I feel that we are being excluded in the discussion. When I lived abroad, travelled, or listened to music, I thought there were not enough Asian role models, especially in the music industry. I didn’t understand why there was still discrimination and I felt the need to speak out publicly that we have many wonderful artists in Asia.
When it comes to my identity as a woman, I started thinking about it ever since I debuted in the industry. There is a clear image of what a female singer should be in K-pop. What people care about is the appearance. I was uncomfortable with that at some point. I felt that I was locked up in a small box that prioritises being a good-looking performer above all else and as if I should live in that box forever.
Would you say your dramatic change was for your own happiness then? Rather than being happy, I think it was just natural. I was taking being myself for granted. I need to live as I am because I can only be just me. I don’t understand why our society says we shouldn’t be ourselves. I also believe that there must be a bigger happiness beyond being myself. But it will come to us when we live as we are. Being true to yourself is the necessary ingredient.
Some fans were shocked by the change and missed the dreamy voice you were known for previously. I haven’t been shaken by this because I can always sing a song with different voices. I don’t stick to an aggressive nor a dreamy concept. Everything depends on what I want to express at each moment. I will not finish my career with this one album. That’s why I am open to diverse concepts, genres, and styles. I won’t be swayed by others.
Besides, the dreamy voice is not my natural voice, like how I speak. I need to put in extra effort to make that voice. I think our voices are a musical instrument — so the sound can range from thick, thin, soft, aggressive, or dreamy.
To make your new album you raised money via crowdfunding, which is very uncommon in K-pop. Why did you choose that path? There are two reasons. First of all, I thought it would be fun if we could show people that we have a different way of raising money without getting help from big companies. I wanted to prove that there is not only one right answer. Secondly, we also realistically need money to release the album because labels rarely understand the music I like to make. I thought that I could raise money and share my thoughts and beliefs at the same time.
I realised that there are a large number of people who support me and have thought of the needs of different styles of K-pop artists. I don’t think all the donors were just my fans, but they might be people who support my message. Before this it was difficult to tell whether there were people who have the same ideas as me. Through this opportunity, I found that many people are supportive of my current direction.

Chapter 2: Dithyramb (or read on ao3)
"Why're your arms so long?"
"Excuse me?" Incredulous, Taekwoon regards his teammate through hooded eyes even as a bead of sweat falls past his bangs and down the side of his face. It was hot out. He was hot. Jinsoo was not helping.
"Your. Arms. Are. Long." The man of the hour drags out, pausing at intervals between his words as though Taekwoon were dumb or hard of hearing. "And you're tall. You really ought to be playing basketball or something."
Taekwoon huffs, raven locks drenched in perspiration when he reaches up to run a hand through them. Grimacing in disgust, he wipes his palm against the front of his practice jersey, watching as Jinsoo begins to punt the black and white checkered football against both of his knees, not daring to meet Taekwoon’s eyes. "Are you trying to get me to quit?" He fires back, voice devoid of any threats, but serious nonetheless.
"Nah, man. Well, there'd be more of a chance of me getting recruited by one of the upper leagues if you did, but I'd miss you too much. No one here's got a poker face like you." Jinsoo was referring to the time that he and the rest of the team had gotten their first win at nationals. There was an after party that their coach deeply frowned upon the idea of, so it had been Taekwoon's job to set their coach's mind at ease.
"I like football."
Jinsoo huffs out a chuckle, sounding winded after the drills that they had just recently finished, before grabbing onto the football and tucking it under his armpit, slinging his free arm around Taekwoon's shoulders. Their height difference meant that Taekwoon had to accommodate by stooping down a bit to make up for lost inches. Jinsoo was alright most of the time. Taekwoon wouldn't trust him with a soggy piece of toast, but he was decent enough. What the man lacked in stature, he made up in stamina, endurance, and swiftness. He was probably the fastest player their team had because he was nimble and dexterous, slipping through gaps in the opposing team's defense that they most likely had no idea were even there. Jinsoo could be lazy, though, and he enjoyed partying a bit too much for Taekwoon's liking, but at least they got along on their line. "Oh yeah. A few other guys and I were gonna go get dinner after this. You busy?"
They always offered, and Taekwoon was always grateful for that, but-
There's a smile on his face when he shakes his head.
"Sorry, I have to pick up Minyul from tutoring." Even if his tutoring session was mostly just to make sure that Minyul was developing his skills properly. Taekwoon was very against the intense training that a few of the kids at Minyul's school were put through by their parents, but he didn't want the child to fall behind either.
"Gotcha. Why don't you let him come watch us practice sometime? I'm sure he'd like it," Jinsoo suggests, patting Taekwoon's back hard twice in a gesture of affection before grabbing his football and starting to pass it between his hands. The turf under their feet squelches with every step of their cleats, and Taekwoon shrugs, kicking away some of the ludicrously coloured ground.
“I like when there is someone to watch him. And he would be distracted here.” It was a lame excuse, but if the suddenly tightening of Jinsoo’s lips meant anything, it was that Taekwoon wouldn’t be questioned any further. He was relieved for that, and soon their short break for catching their breaths and re hydrating was over and the two were back to practicing their footwork with the rest of the team.
About ten years previously, Taekwoon was a rising football star out of a small town south of Gwangju. He had two elder sisters, both of whom he treasured dearly even if they were sometimes overbearing and insistent on embarrassing him in any way they deemed fit, but they were also the two people who pushed him the hardest to follow his dream of competing professionally. In his second to last year of high school, Taekwoon was offered a position on a national team, and thus sparked his career. He’d had trouble in his last year when conflicts between his final exams and championships set him back from the rest of his teammates, and the rising star began to fall. From then, there always seemed to be some excuse to not allow him to play. Taekwoon was sure that it was a type of revenge from his coaches for him putting graduation before the team, and there were games afterwards where Taekwoon did not play at all. He had to claw his way back to being recognized for his talent, but through it all, he had the two most important people at his side to continue urging him all. Through his trials, his siblings remained his biggest fans, coming to cheer for him at games whenever they could and always congratulating him on a job well done. And then Taekwoon started to have more reasons to be happy, because his sisters began to grow up as well, finding partners that he approved up and starting their own families. Minyul was born.
Taekwoon was twenty- one and in the midst of being traded to another team, one whose home field was close to the place he grew up in and would be easier to commute to, when there was an accident.
She was only trying to come home from her day job, the one she only ever spent four hours a day at because she didn’t like leaving Minyul with other people for very long. The middle child of the trio of siblings had always been fiercely protective of her brother, so why wouldn’t she be of her son? She had been coming home when her car stalled in the middle of the intersection, and Taekwoon can vividly remember the marred, disfigured mass of bone and flesh that had been pulled out of the wreckage of the crash that ensued. He remembers blaming anyone that he could; his parents for not looking after her, his brother-in-law for not being there to stop it. He blamed himself for being too caught up in his career to properly thank the woman for giving him so much of her time. But, she had left Minyul behind, and when it became apparent that Minyul’s biological father was unable to properly care for the boy due to the nature of his work, custody was ruled in favour of Taekwoon. It had not been an easy adjustment. Minyul had been three years old when he came to live with Taekwoon, and caring for a toddler while also worrying about which direction to take in his own life had taken its toll on Taekwoon’s state of mind. The football player took a year to determine what he was interested in. It helped that he and Minyul always got along. Taekwoon HAD been present at the hospital the day Minyul was born to congratulate his sister and welcome the new life into the world with an abundance of balloons and a bouquet fit for a queen. He would cherish the memory of that day.
In that time, Taekwoon learned everything he could about Minyul. His nephew liked the colour green and he was very proud of the pictures he drew. Taekwoon kept a folder of all the drawings Minyul made for him. Minyul also liked fairy tales, and when he came to realize that his uncle had a lot of them, the boy would spend hours staring at the pretty designs in the books in wonder. Minyul started to call his uncle ‘Ta’ when he saw Taekwoon’s name printed on a player card and found he couldn't quite pronounce it properly. Taekwoon never corrected him.
When it came time to start thinking about places to enroll Minyul for school, Taekwoon sought out any place he could get to that was within a safe distance of his apartment building and reasonably reputable. Minyul is five and Taekwoon has been coaching minor league football for six months when he gets the call from an agent about an opportunity to try out for a national team. He makes the cut, and with Minyul in school for hours at a time, he doesn't have to worry so much. But, Taekwoon still does worry, because if anything were to take Minyul from him now, there would be nothing to keep him from falling apart at the seams.
As it is, Taekwoon thinks he’s doing a pretty good job of keeping everything together because he hardly ever hesitates anymore. When there are things he’s unsure of, his parents and sister are only a phone call away, even if his mother has started referring to Minyul as Taekwoon’s son now. His heart always ached at that, but he knew she would never take it too far. Minyul knew that he had had a mother but that she was out of reach now, which indicated pretty good comprehension skills from the child. Still, Taekwoon wondered if Minyul would have turned out different if he had continued being raised by his mother. Would she have done things differently? Would she be proud of her little brother for taking care of her son? Taekwoon hoped she would have been, and he didn’t think Minyul was turning out half bad even if he was a little bit loud and disruptive sometimes. So sue him, he wanted his nephew to have fun in his youth. Taekwoon continues to dribble the ball between his feet.
⋯ ◯ ⋯⋯
Taekwoon’s home life is wonderfully and awfully domestic. His two bedroom apartment suite had always felt too big when he was alone, but now that he had his nephew living with him, it was tough to find enough space for himself. Haphazardly strewn about the apartment were toys and games of all kinds, including the ones that Minyul had played with as a baby that Taekwoon claimed he didn’t have the time to take away but in actuality he wanted to hold onto for safe keeping. On a few walls were leftover streaks of reds, blues, browns and pinks from crayons that Taekwoon could never properly clean away, and so it was safe to assume that the home looked as though it were in absolute turmoil most of the time. However, Taekwoon hardly cared, because it was more lived in like this than it had ever been before, when it was quiet and lonely place. He had avoided it back then, because while he liked having time to himself, Taekwoon hated the feeling of being left by himself. Now it was different, and he wouldn’t change it in the least (save for the pieces of Lego that always seemed to be right where his bare feet needed to go in the mornings).
Even now Taekwoon could hear Minyul giggling to himself in the other room while the drone of the television continued its monotonous murmur. Taekwoon smiled to himself as he finished pushing the wet clothes into the dryer, glad that he would have the next few days off to be with the boy. There was a constant, nagging doubt that festered in the football player's mind that he could be spending more time with Minyul or encouraging his nephew to be more social and make more friends. However, Taekwoon was also selfish, and there were precious memories that were still to be made between the two and the loss of time that would come with Minyul having other kids over... It made him seethe a little bit. Or maybe he was afraid that Minyul would grow away from him when he thought of his uncle as no longer worth his time. Taekwoon frowned at that, shutting the dryer door with a gesture more forceful than necessary and wiping his hands on the back of his jeans. He was not going to be frustrated by this fantasy any longer, he told himself, taking in a long breath through his nose to curb the edge to the hostile thoughts before he started to make his way back into the den of the apartment.
Taekwoon was nearing the door when the rumble of another voice made him freeze. He frantically tried to rationalize, sure that his moment of panic would be soothed when he turned the corner and found that Minyul had simply turned the volume on the television up too loudly, or maybe it was the neighbours having a heated argument. But, Taekwoon knew that he left the channel on some sort of cartoon his nephew liked before he went to put the laundry away, and the only other person he should be able to hear from this spot was the elderly woman in the suite to his right-
“Wow, you’re a good drawer!”
That was it.
Taekwoon sprinted into action, thanking any good spirits looking after him for his long legs once again and also congratulating his past self for thinking to hide some sort of weapon in almost every room. In this case, just behind the washing machine was a thick wooden bat, a bit on the shorter side, but enough to pack a punch in a tight situation. Taekwoon was grabbing the thing was so much force he was surprised that there was no snap of wood between his fingers from the vice-like grip. He swallowed hard.
Minyul was giggling. Which was good, he guessed, because that meant that no physical harm was coming to him, but it was also bad because the kid loved basically anyone that could make him laugh.
Taekwoon was moving as silently as he could, his socks brushing against the cold wooden floors with barely a sound so that it was only his ragged breathing he had to be worried about. There was no way he was going to take the chance of being found out if it put his nephew in harm’s way. He could wait until he had a sure shot at the stranger in his home. He could wait until that out of place voice become too loud…
“Where did you say your uncle went?”
“Ta’s over there,” Minyul was informing the mysterious figure, and from this vantage point, with Taekwoon’s slender body concealed behind the laundry room door, he could peer through the crack between the door frame and the wall to look at the shock of dirty blond hair that belonged to the male currently sitting cross-legged beside Minyul on the floor. Of facial features, Taekwoon made sure to remember a prominent nose, bow-shaped lips and a face on the rounder side. Taekwoon wanted to curse at the broad shoulders he saw, trying to mentally calculate just how BIG the guy was and if he had a chance to take him down without breaking too much furniture.
“Oh, really? We should call him out here!” And the guy was smiling so brightly at Minyul that a rage began to bubble up inside him even though all Taekwoon could do was grit his teeth; but then he saw his chance coming. His nephew, his brilliant, dependable, clever nephew decided that it would be HIS job to bring Uncle Taekwoon out to meet his new friend.
Taekwoon didn’t pause to question how it was possible for the man to have gotten into his apartment. He didn’t think for a second about the fact that they were on the eighth floor or that his security system hadn’t gone off or that it was highly unlikely that the guy had managed to pick the lock for the front door in the first place, because as soon as Minyul was pushing open the door to the laundry room, Taekwoon was slamming it shut. He saw the startled expression on Minyul’s face before the tears began, the loud noise most likely setting him off, but his uncle could do little to soothe the confused child because he had shut the door behind him after slipping through the opening Minyul had made when seeking out his uncle. Taekwoon must have looked like some sort of madman with the bat in hand. No doubt he would be foaming at the mouth as soon as he located the stranger whom had the audacity to barge into his home and corner his poor flesh- and- blood kin. Rapid eye movements sought out the figure Taekwoon had seen as the football player beat the polished wood of the bat against the palm of his hand. There was a dangerous glint in his eyes, but all Taekwoon was aware of was the rage induced red hue that decorated his surroundings. It was wherever he looked, but still there was no sign of the stranger. There was no way in Hell he was stepping away from the door, though. Not when Minyul was inside, sniffing and beating weakly on the door with his tiny hands.
“Ta! Scary in here!” That did capture Taekwoon’s attention, though, and while he raised the bat in a pointed gesture, he was beginning to calm down.
“It’s alright, kiddo. Ta’s going to get the bad man.”
“Not bad, Ta! He knows magic tricks!” Oh, so that’s how Minyul had trusted the guy so easily. Not for the first time, Taekwoon’s teeth made an odd sound as they scraped together when his jaw clenched. What kind of sick bastard was he dealing with here?
When there was no movement for another moment, Taekwoon opted for leaning against the laundry room door. His cell phone should still be in there, and in his alarmed state he had completely forgotten it. Now that his head was clearer and it was becoming apparent that the guy had taken off, Taekwoon thought it was probably a better plan to call the police and wait them out in the room with his nephew.
The minutes began to tick by until Taekwoon eventually, painstakingly, edged the door open, casting furtive glances over his shoulder in case the freak from before decided to make another grand appearance and thought to take Taekwoon by surprise. No such scenario played out, though, and when the Korean man was finally in full view to his nephew, Minyul threw himself around one large leg and adamantly refused to let go, clinging desperately at Taekwoon’s calf with his sharp nails digging into the material of his uncle’s jeans. With some maneuvering, Taekwoon was able to get them both inside the room, barricading the door with the dressing table that he kept the laundry things on top of and where he had left his phone.
Slowly, so as not to alarm the poor kid more than he already had, Taekwoon pried Minyul from his leg, bringing him into his uncle’s protective embrace for both of their sake.
“Sorry, sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. Ta didn’t mean to do that,” he was murmuring into the little boy’s hair from where his nephew had stuck his head under Taekwoon’s chin. He slid down onto the floor, cradling Minyul in his arms even while he dialed the number for the local police service, waited with baited breath until the uniformed officers arrived to ensnare the two of them in the security that the authorities provided, and only then did he release the bat.
⋯ ◯ ⋯⋯
“No sign of forced entry. No tampering with locks, all windows with ledges outside of them properly closed and locked as well. No video evidence to prove that any man at all other than yourself or another resident wandered down your hallway the day of the alleged home invasion.”
It was two weeks later, and Taekwoon was back at the police station to go over his statement. It seemed that, while the officers believed that something occurred for Taekwoon to have made the call, there was trouble putting all of the pieces together. The woman in uniform questioning him let out a sigh.
“We are at a loss, Mr. Jung. Your nephew and yourself gave the exact same description of the man you said you saw, but there seems to be no evidence that concludes this to be true. No person in your building exactly matches what you have told us, and the time stamp on the hallway video proves that there was no tampering with the recording. This alarms us. If there IS a predator wandering around that part of the city, a part where there are many families, we must be able to provide evidence of the case before issuing any sort of alert. You understand this?”
Taekwoon nods, mute. He also understood that Minyul was going to a sleepover that night and it would be the first time since the incident that he would be spending such a prolonged amount of time away from his nephew. The thought was churning his stomach unpleasantly, and his expression had been sour for most of the day.
“You are also certain that you have never seen the man before?” Taekwoon nods again. The woman nods back at him. Taekwoon nods again. He really, really wanted to leave.
“Then there are no further questions that I have for you,” the officer concludes, standing and waiting for Taekwoon to do the same before gesturing for the football player to follow her slighter form out of the room. Taekwoon was glad. It had been stuffy in there, the four walls seeming to close in on him, even though he was by no means claustrophobic, and the mirror that he knew was truly a two- way mirror was so overbearing that he could hardly bring himself to look at the thing even though it was right behind the woman who had sat across from him. He wondered who else was watching their discussion, and if Taekwoon had subconsciously scowled at the mirror a few times, he would never admit to it. Taekwoon did still remember his manners, though, bowing politely to the officer as she let him be to track down Minyul in the children’s room.
The kid bounced to attention once his uncle called his name and Taekwoon reached for his nephew’s hand as soon as he was within proper holding distance. Apparently Minyul had basically forgotten what had happened and Taekwoon was happy to see that it didn’t impair his rambunctious personality. Of course, Taekwoon was sure the boy had told his schoolmates all about the strange friend he met at home the day he was allowed to go back to school, but he didn’t think too much about that. Taekwoon just made extra sure that all the locks were in order and that the bat was safely tucked away should he ever need to actually use it.
They were in Taekwoon’s car, Minyul safely in his car seat and staring out the window before he spoke again.
“Ta, excited.”
“You’re excited? For tonight?” Minyul nods; Taekwoon sees it in the rear view mirror. He was kicking his short legs out and just barely missing the back of the passenger side seat with every extension of his legs, but Taekwoon didn’t have the heart to chastise him.
“Do you want to pack Dog?” Dog was the aptly named retriever plush Minyul had gotten for his fourth birthday from Taekwoon’s eldest sister. Supposedly it was for some popular internet game and came with a code so that Minyul could play online, but he had been more interested in the soft fur than the interactive pet world and usually cuddled it to bed at night.
“I’ll make sure you have it then. And you know that if you want to come home, you can call me. No matter what time it is, I’ll come and get you. Especially if you’re scared.”
“I won’t get scared! I’m not scared of anything!” Is the indignant reply and Taekwoon laughs heartily.
“I know,” he confirms, but Taekwoon couldn’t say the same for himself.
⋯ ◯ ⋯⋯
There’s screaming. Three, four, five kids in unison screaming at the tops of their lungs and Taekwoon is about to let his nephew join in on the madness. The look that Yugyeom’s mother gives him is withering and the football player barely keeps Minyul’s attention long enough to get a quick kiss on the cheek before the child is running off to join in on what can only be identified as a yelling match, with the winner of the match being deemed king. What was today’s youth coming to? He almost wanted to offer some sort of retribution to the mother that greeted him at the door, but when he tried to speak there was no sound. He simply stood there, gazing past her shoulder into the mess of the home before silently placing Minyul’s overnight bag just inside the door and bowing profusely before backing away from the situation, his voice barely comprehensible as he mouthed his thanks for watching Minyul that night. When Taekwoon sees Chaewon’s nod -that was her name. She was Yugyeom’s mother, Taekwoon remembered now- he knows he’s in the clear and Taekwoon reminds himself to never buy a place big enough to house a bustling party of rugrats.
But Taekwoon knows now that Minyul will be alright, and that sets whatever tension had been causing his ill mood at ease. He had practice to worry about the next day anyway, and this night would be good to get himself back into the player mindset. There were nationals coming up soon, and that meant preliminaries were already underway and teams were being assigned their spots according to the past year’s rankings. His team had done well, but fourth was not enough to promise them a spot in the finals, which meant that they were due for the single elimination rounds. After that came the double elimination, meaning that the top five teams to progress to the finals were set to compete against at least three teams before their rankings were set for that year. Taekwoon had a lot to think about, was what it meant, and his drive home was relatively quiet save for the new formation sequences he was making up as he went.
Parking was quiet too, and he had to stop himself from getting out of the car and opening the back door to let Minyul out. The act took him aback for the moment as there had really never been a night that he had to himself since the boy moved in (not that he was complaining). It struck Taekwoon that his apartment would be quiet again, and his feet dragged all the way to the flight of stairs that would lead him up, up, up to the lonely place waiting for him. His stomach rumbles and his pace quickens. Maybe if he filled the apartment with the sounds of cooking food, he would have some incentive to enjoy his alone time.
There are few people milling around the building even though it was not particularly late. Then again, work nights tended to be the prime nights to go out with coworkers, and this complex was not one intended for that sort of use considering excessive noise after 8 was frowned upon. It just meant that there was nothing to distract Taekwoon, and if he nearly fell asleep when he finally made it inside the elevator, then it was only to be expected. Thankfully, the abhorrent ping of the bell signalling his stop pulled him from his drowsing, and through heavily lidded eyes, the football player stumbles to his suite and inputs the code that will let him inside. The numbers on the buttons blur together for a long moment, and he wonders when he had gotten so tired. Most likely stress, Taekwoon reasoned to himself, pushing the door open and pulling the deadlock over behind him- it was too high for Minyul to reach if anyone did try to coerce the child into opening the door.
Taekwoon steps inside, shrugging off his light sweater and kicking his shoes to the side of the door before moving to the small closet just off the entryway of his home- but he only takes a step in that direction before he pauses. Because if Taekwoon was being certain, he was sure he had seen a body flit from one side of the archway leading into the kitchen to the other in a wisp of activity. And if Taekwoon was a rational person, he might get his phone out just in case he needed to contact and emergency service. But Taekwoon wasn't always rational, and if he wasn't experience any form of psychosis then it must be true that there was someone in his apartment. Again. Without his permission. Treading on silent feet, the athlete slinks to the archway, taking a deep breath of gusto before tentatively peering inside the room.
But there's nothing to see. Everything was exactly as he had left it, not even a dish towel out of place, and there's a quizzical furling of Taekwoon’s eyebrows as he moves inside the kitchen. It's possible the intruder was moving through the house, but a fast inspection of each of the rooms had Taekwoon fumbling. He was certain he wasn't imagining things, but maybe he was more fatigued than he previously thought, and his growling stomach once again alerted him to the fact that he was famished as well as emotionally exhausted.
Taekwoon first trudges into the washroom to splash some cold water on his face, the somewhat gaunt and angular face that stared back at him seeming forlorn. The fingers that run across the expanse of flesh at the nape of his neck are prickled, indicating that it would soon be time for a shave again. Later, though. Later. Begrudgingly, because he still didn’t want to believe that he was suffering from any sort of paranoia, Taekwoon steps through the hallways of his apartment, weaving his way back into the kitchen. And then he freezes.
“There you are! You must be Uncle Ta!” Exclaims the blond man sitting at Taekwoon’s dining table.
Taekwoon really wishes he’d brought the bat with him.

Tony Stark Bingo 2019 - Blackout
Tumblr media
Here are all my fills for my @tonystarkbingo card.
All fics are rated T unless otherwise indicated. (There’s only one not rated T.) And mind the tags.
S1: The Truth Will Out - Gen
Helmut Zemo's original plans were stymied by Tony's big reveal at the Leipzig airport. But he will have his way, no matter what. Because no matter how you try to hide it, the truth will always come out. This is a continuation of my Shifter verse.
S2: Reverse, Rewind, Play Again - IronStrange
When something strange happens to Tony on a botched Avengers' mission, Pepper and Rhodey are left wondering what happened and keeping things together. Then Tony comes back and the whole world is going to change.
S3: Enough Is Enough - Gen
In the wake of the disaster in Bucharest, Tony decides enough is enough. If Steve is going to push, Tony will push back and he has a bit more in his arsenal than anyone expected.
S4: Sins of the Father - Gen
When Hank Pym requests a meeting, Tony isn't expecting much in the way of good things. He's pleasantly surprised.
S5: Trust - Gen
Rhodey finally finds out that Tony is a shifter and what his form is. It doesn't happen in quite the way Tony wanted but it all works out okay.
T1: Knock Me Up - Tony Stark x Jack Harkness
Tony's so bored in his meeting he's ready to stab himself with a pen to get out of it. Then Jack arrives to make it a whole lot less boring.
T2: Together - Gen
On the way to Nidavellir, Groot told Thor stories about what the Guardians had done. Thor remembers those stories at just the right moment.
T3: Not Your Damsels In Distress - FrostIron
The Rogues make a very, very, very big mistake when they decide to crash a certain girls' day out.
T4: Scandal - WinterIron
Tony knows the return of the Rogues is going to cause a scandal, no matter what the President's polling data says, however James decides that they'll counter a scandal with a bigger, better, more shiny scandal. Tony approves.
T5: But(t)...But(t)...But(t) - WinterIron
No one knows who Iron Man is, other than the bodyguard of the Avengers' main benefactor, Tony Stark. Bucky figures out the secret but not quite in the way you might think.
A1: Taking Up The Mantle - Gen
Tony left him everything he'd need but it's Harley's decision to take up the mantle that was left behind.
A2: Abandonment - Gen
Steve Rogers is the leader of a team of adventurers. When they're hired by Tony Stark to find an ancient temple, he thinks it'll be an easy job for good money. Instead, some old chickens come home to roost.
A3: Damsels Lacking In Distress - FrostIron
You asked for it, my muses decide to play ball - What happened to the ladies in Not Your Damsels In Distress. You probably should read that one before this.
A4: Professional Relationship - Tony Stark x Janet Van Dyne
Steve catches up on the latest news from the New Avengers and he doesn't like what he sees.
A5: Better Memories - Tony Stark x Jack Harkness - Rated: M
Tony has bad memories attached to anything that looks like a container full of water. Jack helps him make some better ones.
R1: Explaining Graphically - Gen
Tony is sent a bunch of comics, ostensibly from a fan. The comics are not what they seem but the outside impression is very valuable.
R2: Legacy - Gen
Harley Keener finds out what his legacy is. It's bigger than he ever expected.
R3: An Open Mind - Gen
When Tony gets captured with Sam Wilson, he's prepared for the worst. It ends up not going how he expected... in a good way.
R4: The Echo of Silence - Gen
Thanos is gone and everyone had faded into dust. Only Tony and Nebula are left.
R5: There And Back Again - IronStrange
Mordo comes after Stephen with a spell aimed at Tony that de-ages him, firstly to his mid-twenties and then to his teens. Stephen... copes and Loki is the real hero.
K1: The Doom Of All Men... Is To Be Flirted With - Pepperony
Look, Tony likes being flirted with as much as the next person but he has standards, you know.
K2: Mistakes Were Made - FrostIronStrange
Tony has been kidnapped more time than he cares to admit. It's almost always cliche and the kidnappers always seem to make the same mistakes. Not that he minds. Those mistakes are always to his advantage. Features a confused Sam Wilson and a not-the-damsel-in-distress Tony Stark.
K3: Sounds Like A Plan - Pepperony
Tony's not sure what to make of the walking, talking raccoon in his workshop but he's tired, upset and determined that Thanos has to die. Rocket agrees and a plan is formed.
K4: Regal is an Attitude - Gen
When T'Challa finds out Rogers and Barnes left Tony Stark behind in Siberia, he chooses to be the kind of king who looks out for the people rather than on who only indulges his personal whims.
K5: That’s New - Gen
Tony's back from Afghanistan and paying the price for not shifting for over three months. When he finally does... it turns out to be more interesting than he expected.

The Soldier, he calls himself, with his brutal efficiency and that patented stoic demeanor, and maybe Tony should be afraid for his life, but he's not. No, mostly, he's just trying to ignore his busted ankle, the freezing cold seeping into him, and the fact that he's secretly head-over-heels in love with both sides of Bucky Barnes. What he doesn’t appreciate is a visit from Bucky’s old boss, Nick Fury, with a mysterious (and likely magical) device he wants them to investigate. He ought to say no and throw Nick out -- but the thing is strangely compelling. Maybe if he’d read a few more fairy tales, he’d have seen that for the warning sign that it was. Now, he’s cursed, and the race is on to find the owner of the thing, or some other way to break the curse, before it results in something not only unpleasant but unrecoverable. Word Count: 8935

He’s sitting in a booth, when a handsome man, tall and lithe, slips into the seat on the other side, dreads curling over his face like a fringe, dark eyes flashing. “Hey,” he says, smoothly. “Hi,” Tony says, pleasantly, leaning back in his chair. It’s not his first time, being approached like this in a bar. The man takes a long drag of his beer, his throat flexing. “You’re Tony Stark.” Tony’s mouth twists. “If I have to be, sure,” he says, casually. Word Count: 6164

Trapped at the intersection of Mental Illness and Violence
How it feels to be stereotyped based on race, religion and mental health
What images come to mind when you hear of a school shooting? Do you immediately make assumptions about who may have committed the crime and why? Do you fall into the trap of generalizing and vilifying all groups related to the perpetrator’s background? I know for me, I feel pain over the senseless loss of life. I mourn for family members of both the victims and the people who carry out these heinous acts. And, I fear that public hysteria, which comes along with tragedy, will somehow trickle down to me. As a black Muslim woman in hijab, I never know which one of my identities I’ll have to defend, based on the culprit. Furthermore, stigma about the realities of mental illness tends to fan the flames of fear and ignorance.
As such, I’ve been closely following the recent school shooting in Florida. The heartbreaking nature of this event, including what led up to it, drew my attention for a few reasons. But, mainly because it reignited a national conversation about mental health and violence. The subject of guns has been drawn into the mix as well. As a person living with mental illness, however, I cringe at the idea of random members of society thinking people like me are a threat. I’ve never hurt anybody else and I don’t think I’m even capable of doing so. “In fact, research suggests that this public perception does not reflect reality. Most individuals with psychiatric disorders are not violent.” (Harvard Mental Health Letter: Mental Illness and Violence) Therefore, I don’t want to be labeled for what someone else has done. I’m not a danger to anybody except myself when I’m feeling suicidal. Mental illness hasn’t changed who I am nor the values I espouse.
This is not to say that having mental illness has no effects on my behavior. Of course, it does. I do tend to talk a lot and out of turn when I’m feeling active. And I frequently forget appointments and dates due to my mental disorganization. I can be overly sensitive when my feelings get hurt or if I believe someone doesn’t like me. And I cry at commercials and movies that aren’t meant to be sad. All of this stems from emotional regulation issues and being a highly sensitive person. I get easily upset when others are hurt as well. I’m hardest on myself when I think I’ve said the wrong thing. I can be hypercritical of myself to a fault. Mental illness makes me doubt who I am and what I’m capable of. The problem with the national conversation about mental health and violence is that mental health problems already took a toll on my self-image. It[K3]  often makes me believe I’m less than what I aim to be in life. It can rob me of my courage and tenacity. But despite all this, I put on a brave face each morning and prepare to face a world which may misunderstand me. Because I believe the best way to combat stigma is to face it head on and defy the odds. So I draw the line: I’m not violent just because I live with mental illness and this does not change depending on what anybody else thinks or says. Instead you can use adjectives such as: honest, passionate, scared, courageous, talkative, kind, resilient, and so forth, to describe me. These words are much more descriptive of my life.
So, the next time you hear about a tragedy in the news, stop and think about any prejudices you may harbor. Ask yourself if fear and misinformation are forming your biases. If so, actively work on unlearning erroneous beliefs and begin to silence your fear of the unknown. This will help tremendously in the fight against the stigma associated with mental illness. It will take all of us to tackle this, but I’m confident that we can do it, together.

Chapter Three – Patterns in the Snow
I sat on the solitary wooden chair outside my hut, watching the sun come up over the jungle trees. Time seemed to be running slowly. Inside, Adam was making porridge, wrongly convinced it would give him some sort of biking advantage. In front of me, standing ten feet away, was Ifan.
“Ifan Thorne,” I said. “I always knew someday you’d come walking back through my door. I never doubted that. Something made it inevitable. So, what are you doing here in Nepal?”
Ifan looked me up and down coolly. “Adam has presumably explained everything.”
I nodded, my teeth starting to grind. “I’ve learned to hate you in the last ten years.”
“I never meant to hurt you.”
“I was a child. I thought we were just climbing a mountain. It was wrong and you knew it.”
“You knew what you were doing.”
I stood. “Now I do. This is my place. Get out.”
I turned and walked back into the hut, away from Ifan’s protestations that, as technically he hadn’t come into my place yet, he couldn’t get out; which rendered my statement nonsensical. I swung the door open, interrupting Adam as he was trying on some of my age-defying eye cream.
“Oh… I was just…”
Ignoring him, I went back into the bathroom, cursing the fact that the cheap extractor fan I’d installed the previous year hadn’t had time to ventilate the room yet. I placed my hands on the sink and stared at my reflection in the mirror. The time had taken a toll. Arguably, it wasn’t the years but the mileage; irrespective, I resembled a dried out husk of a man. My face was weather-beaten and pockmarked; lines etched deep trenches in my forehead. My hair, more salt than pepper now, unkempt and thinned by the unrelenting sun. Time had taken its toll; but thankfully not on the eyes.
I bowed my head, giving in to the inevitable. I had lost something on Kangleong. Maybe it was time to get it back.
I walked back out into the main room of my hut. Adam had by now gone outside, the appearance of wrinkles on his forehead presumably now visibly reduced via the magic of oxycutin-10. I switched the TV off and looked round the room, wondering if this would be for the last time. It was home, and I was happy here. But something was pulling me away, to complete something I’d began ten years previously.
I clambered into the back of the C-Max; Ifan drove us through the Korok Forest to Gerudo Town, the nearest large settlement. Ifan explained that this was where he and Adam had been staying whilst trying to track me down.
As Adam went off to check out of the hostel, Ifan and I found a bar. Gallantly, Ifan bought me a bottle of the second cheapest beer. For a while we drank in silence, save for the occasional fart.
“So,” I said, after half my bottle was finished. “Are you going to tell me what this is about?”
Ifan looked up. “What do you mean?”
“Exactly that.”
“You said Adam had told you everything.”
My hands circled the bottle impatiently.
“He told me some stuff, sure. Stuff about time travel, Henry Craven and going back to Kangleong. Now I want you to tell me what’s really going on.”
Ifan let out a hiss of breath. “What he told you was true.”
“From a certain point of view?”
“Look, let’s not start this again, you made that Star Wars reference in the epilogue of Vertical Summit.”
He was right. Damn him, I thought, taking another gulp of my beer.
“Look,” he began, making some attempt at conciliation, but the anger rose up again inside me. I couldn’t help it. Ten years had done nothing to help me accept what had happened.
“Do you have any idea how bad it was?” I interrupted. “I don’t think you do. I don’t think any of you have the first idea. I died here. I lost everything. Everything I was, everything I wanted to be. And then I got given it back.”
“What are you talking about?”
I shook my head. Maybe this was too obscure a reference; I wasn’t convinced either of Ifan or Adam had watched the DVD extras of Touching the Void.
“You owe me,” I said, finally. “I had to put your names on the memorial at base camp. Had to phone your parents. Had to sing a hymn at your funeral and make hors d’oeuvres for the wake. Vol au vents. You know I hate vol au vents. I found some caper berries that went really well with cream cheese, but no-one really went for them so I had to take them all back in my car. I thought they’d keep for a while at least but they lasted three days. Three days Ifan! I had to eat 150,000 vol au vents in three days.”
Ifan looked at me but said nothing.
“All this time carrying your secret. Why didn’t you just tell me from the start? I could have helped. Or I could have stayed at home. Or climbed something people would believe that I climbed. Yeah, that’s right. No-one believed I’d summited. There was no-one left alive to back me up. They thought I’d faked the photos. ‘No-one can climb Kangleong in winter’ they said. So what did they assume happened? That I went on an expedition where everyone else died and I miraculously survived without a scratch? No-one believed a word I’d said; even after I told the whole story.”
“I thought you told it well. The even chapters at least.”
“Thanks.”
“What do you want me to say?”
“The truth!” I almost shouted. “Bloody hell, Ifan, don’t you think I’m owed that? I kept your secret, even though it ruined me. I had to give up my entire life, come halfway round the world just to find some peace. And I found it. I actually found a peaceful life for myself. And then you two turn up and shatter it.”
“It’s not as easy as that.”
“You think anything has been easy for me?”
Ifan looked at me in the eyes and I knew he agreed; he owed me, him and Adam both.
“What we told you was true, back in the tunnel,” he began. “We were on Craven’s tail. He knew we were after him; he’d tried to kill us on that mountain. So we had to fake our deaths, had to make him think we were out of the equation. Then, only then, he might lower his guard and let us get close enough to bring him in.”
“You told me this.”
“We spent the next three years living in the Karakoram. Trying to blend in. We had most of our gear from base camp and plenty of energy gels, so we knew we could hunker in for long enough. In the meantime we were looking for the exact smuggling route Craven was using. It wasn’t enough to know it was somewhere in the Karakoram. We needed the exact trail. It took three cold years, but eventually we found it.”
“I thought you’d already found the trail? Isn’t that what the tunnels were for?”
Ifan shook his head. “You studied the Vietnam War, right? Think of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. A whole network of routes, and the US never knew which routes were being used. Sort of like that. They’d been building this network up for years. We don’t know how long the tunnels have been there, but they might even pre-date the smuggling. They certainly pre-date Craven. There are only two of us, so there was no way to patrol all the tunnels in order to find out which ones they were using.”
“Presumably there was some sort of pre-planned route? Or a system?”
“Exactly,” said Ifan. It took a long time to figure it out, but we did. We got very lucky. We knew we were getting nowhere. We couldn’t just wait in the tunnels because that would get back to Craven. We had to be patient and figure out the system. After three years of waiting, we started our observations. Two years later we had made barely any progress. Truth be told we were on the verge of giving up. Morale was pretty low; Adam and I were barely talking to each other, we’d got so sick of each other’s constant company. So I suggested we forget about things and climb a mountain. So we did. Gasherbrum IV.”
I let out a sharp hiss of breath. Gasherbrum IV was just under 8000m, so not technically in the group of the 13 highest mountains in the world, but its difficulty was legendary. No safe route on the mountain, a sheer west face. Originally known as K3, it was felt in some circles to be a harder mountain to climb than K2. Each route was exposed; you could be blasted by hurricane-force winds, hit by rockfall or swept off the route by avalanches. Seracs hung perilously on each way to the summit, barely clinging on to severely steep faces.
“Acclimatisation wasn’t a problem,” continued Ifan, “as we’d been living pretty much at 30,000ft for the three years previously, just under the death zone. So we figured we could just do a fast and light ascent of one of the ridges. We knew it would be tough.”
“Tough!” I exclaimed.
“Only problem was we knew nothing about the routes, or when was best to climb, and I found out that Adam hadn’t bothered to pay our broadband bill, so we couldn’t get wifi to google it. I suggested we head up an easier mountain, like Broad Peak, wait there with a telescope and plan our expedition.”
“Okay,” I said. I wasn’t sure where the hell this was going.
“So we made it up Broad Peak easy enough. Conditions weren’t brilliant – a lot of scratchy ice. Not a lot to dig into. A bit of a slog. But anyway, we got up to the top, set up our tent and just watched Gasherbrum IV for a month. As you know, there are a lot of avalanches there, supposedly. So we watched for their frequency, where they tended to fall, etc. We started to write our observations down. And then we noticed.”
“Noticed what?” I said, signalling the barman for more beer.
“There was a pattern. An undeniable pattern. It took us a while to realise. It was only when we were having a barbeque to mark our anniversary that I re-read the notebook and noticed the pattern. Avalanches down the south-east ridge specifically. At 8.45, every morning, there would be an avalanche. Some days just a solitary one. Other times two, or three. Rarely, four. But always at 8.45. And always on the south-east ridge.”
“Hold on,” I said, finishing off an onion ring from the sharing platter I’d ordered for myself. “Are you serious? Timed avalanches?” I picked up a mozzarella stick. “You realise how ridiculous that sounds?”
“Which is why we stayed on the summit for another month, just to be sure. I’ve still got the notebook. I can show you.”
“Well, what does that mean?”
“A signal.” Ifan took a folded piece of manuscript out of his jacket pocket and spread it out over the table, knocking over a couple of jalapeno poppers onto the floor. Observing the three second rule I crammed them hurriedly into my mouth, not willing to sacrifice them to the story.
I looked down at the table. The paper Ifan had unfolded was a map; a map of the Karakoram. I counted off the peaks – K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrums, Mason Mount, Denali and, of course, Kangleong. But there was something else on the map. Criss-crossing the mountains, someone had drawn a series of coloured lines in thick marker. Seeing the criss-cross made me jump.
“What am I looking at?” I asked, taking a bite of my plant-based burger.
“This is the network of tunnels. We think we found them all. Each different colour represents a different route.”
Although each coloured line ended in a different place on the western edge of the mountain range and started at different places at the northern boundary of the Karakoram, at points the lines converged before separating again. I could count six separate colours.
“Six routes,” said Ifan, as if he was reading my thoughts or the last sentence. “Six routes through the mountains.”
“So,” I said, “let me get this right. You’re saying that each number of avalanches corresponds to a different smuggling route?”
“Yep.”
“But you said there were a maximum of four avalanches.”
Ifan nodded. “We saw four three times. Most of the time it was one, two or three. But when we looked in the diary, Adam had recorded five avalanches on the south-east route once. Early on.”
“Okay, so that’s five. What about the sixth?”
Ifan leaned forward and pointed to the red line on the map. For the most part it ran a distance away from everything else.
“This one,” he said. “We think this is the sixth. We’re not even completely sure it exists. We drew the line on this map where we thought it goes but we’ve only found parts of it. We think sections of it are hidden. Behind seracs, inside crevasses, that kind of thing. But we found tunnels which didn’t seem to go anywhere. We think they’re part of this sixth route. A secret route.”
“What for?”
“Craven himself. You know the passetto di borgo in Rome? Provides an escape route for the Pope to the Castel Sant’angelo. Something like that. A route only Craven knew. A way for him to escape. That’s why there are no six avalanche signals. We think it’s for him only.”
“You think.”
Ifan grimaced. “We don’t know for sure. After we descended from Broad Peak we searched extensively for him. We found the tunnels, bit by bit, and built up this map. We knew where the passages intersected, we had a remote camera on Broad Peak watching Gasherbrum IV, so when the avalanches went off we knew where to go. Over the next two years we caught ninety-six smugglers. Found seventeen tonnes of plutonium. But nothing of Craven himself. You can see the routes all begin and end at separate places. So there was no way of knowing where he was holed up. Of course, the smugglers themselves wouldn’t tell us. They were too scared of him. Meanwhile he was happy for them to take all the flack.”
“A craven individual, you might say.”
Ifan looked at me silently.
“Hold on,” I said, “you said you were hiding out for three years. Then you said you were finding tunnels for two years. That’s five years.”
“We spent a while looking for you.”
“How long?”
“Six months.”
I paused. I’d only got GCSE maths but I’m fairly sure that didn’t account for the whole ten year gap between seeing them last and now.
“What aren’t you telling me?” I asked.
Ifan looked down at the table. He slowly folded back up the map and placed it back inside his jacket. Then he took a deep lungful of air.
“Towards the end of the time we were rounding people up. We were on K2, just around the Black Pyramid, where one of the tunnels runs behind. It was a snowy day. Fairly typical bad weather for K2. Anyway, we decide to head up to the balcony, to see the famous bottleneck and the serac above it. Adam left before I did as I had to pop a few things in the boot of the car. When I got to the balcony there was no sign of him.”
“What do you mean?”
“He’d gone. I could barely see his tracks in the snow. The whole balcony was a complete white-out. No sign of anything at all. I couldn’t even see as far as the bottleneck. He’d vanished.”
I didn’t understand.
“I stayed on that mountain for four years, looking for him. Looking for any sign of what had happened. Then, just as I was packing up at Camp II, he came wandering back down the mountain as if nothing had happened.”
I still didn’t understand.
“So what had happened?” I asked.
Ifan shook his head. “I don’t know. He seemed completely fine. Still had all his gear, still wearing the same clothes. But… there was something different. I didn’t realise until we were down at base camp. But then he started talking about you, about getting back to Kangleong and 2013. Stopping Craven. I didn’t understand it.”
“You mean…”
“Yeah. This whole time travel thing. The whole thing about being from the future. That’s what he’s been saying since he came down the mountain. I don’t understand it. But he’s convinced we have to get back to Kangleong. He’s convinced we need to stop Craven.”
“But what happened up there? What happened to him in those four years?”
“I don’t know.”
“Ifan, for heaven’s sake…”
“Jeez, Andrew!” Ifan was shouting now. “Read between the lines! I haven’t decided what happened! I’m leaving that for Adam to potentially use in a subsequent chapter!”
I fell quiet, unable to process everything. What had happened to Adam to leave him convinced he was from the future? Where had he been for those four years?
“So,” Ifan said softly, “I figured that the best thing to do would be to go along with it. Find you, then head back to Kangleong. See if I could understand along the way what was going on.”
“Okay,” I said. “So what’s the issue?”
Ifan looked up at me. The expression chilled me to the bone.
“Kangleong’s not there anymore.”
“What do you mean? Not there?”
“That’s what I’m telling you kid. It’s been totally blown away.”
“What? How?”
“The earthquake. You saw it on the TV. It’s reduced the mountain to rubble. There’s no way back. Whatever was hiding there, there’s no way to find it now.”
I looked over Ifan’s shoulder. Entering the bar, his 85 litre backpack over his shoulders, was Adam. He looked down at the bottles of beer.
“Where’s mine?” he said.
Ifan and I looked at each other in silence.

10 Question tag
Tagged by the incredible @bangtan-madi , honestly love, I wanted to answer many of the questions you were asked but I would have answered the same things so here is mine 🥰🥰
answer 10 questions then write your own and tag some mutuals!!
What are you looking forward to in the next six months?
Finally finishing my degree and try to get a job to save money for my masters.
What quality do you like most about yourself?
Even though I’m very shy, I have a very bright personality and I love to cheer my friends up whenever they are feeling down.
What’s your go-to snack?
I love yogurt with granola, or chopped apple.
What’s your favorite childhood memory?
I have very fond memories of spending my summers in my grandparents’ house, swimming in a little plastic swimming pool in the backyard with my brother and sister and playing in the swing set.
What are your top three bucket list items?
Visit Japan to see the cherry blossoms, a road trip with my best friends across Europe and become a mom🥺
If you could move anywhere right this second, where would you be waking up tomorrow?
Seoul, South Korea, hands down. If didn’t have to worry about money and visas I would already have moved there.
What’s a fictional character that you think you are most like, personality-wise?
I’m Hermione Granger, according to my best friend. He has identified me with her since we were very young, my nerdy tendencies, my love for learning, being the responsible one vs his chaotic tendencies, etc.
If you could be the younger sibling of any idol, who would you pick and why?
PARK JIMIN. I am the older sister and I have always felt responsible of my younger siblings and I have always taken care of them. Jimin seems a very responsible older brother and I just think I would love to be his younger sister and being taken care of just for a while.
When you’re feeling overwhelmed, what do you to do recenter yourself?
I go back to reading my favourite Harry Potter fan fiction (the books take too long to reread and I have not enough time). It’s been my safe place since I was a toddler.
What’s one thing you’ve learned over the past year that’s made you into a better person?
I’ve learned that what matters most is that people are happy, no matter what the world may think, if you love a person you must support their decisions and strive to do your best to help them reach happiness.
My questions:
If you could say anything to your younger self, what would it be?
What did you want to be (profession) when you were younger?
What’s the thing that you like the most about you appearance?
