Imo the problem with novel wwx is the lack of self awareness and reflection. The FEW times he understands where things went wrong and where he fucked up, he... doesn't think??? (ex. He knows at the ancestral hall he was being unfair to jc, but he doesn't say nothing nor ask lwj or wn to stop to attack jc in front of his ancestors; or at the burial mounds 2.0 when people say :you have killed my mom, etc... He shuts up.) I think I understand, because how can you handle some traumas? But, it almost seems like... He doesn't have regrets. Mdzs isn't about redemption or someone confronting his past (jzx never gets an apology, wwx isn't the one to reveal the core's transfer to jc...). wwx goes from taking so much agency to refuse to have agency (he doesn't try to fix the demonic cultivation shit!). Mdzs it's a BL and I find it unsatisfying with all these interesting characters. Obv that's me, just the other day I've seen someone under a jc's post 'oh, this way I find jc a bit sympathetic. I can't get over how he abandoned wwx. lwj did it too, but then he was sorry. jc is still bad for me'. I suppose a lot of people find mdzs satisfying if they are there ONLY for wwx.

I haven't read any other danmei (which is why I should issue an obligatory disclaimer that THESE ARE JUST MY OWN REACTIONS, NOT LEGIT ANALYSIS because I don't know the genre and am aware that I'm not the target audience here), so I am curious to know how it compares within the genre. I don't see Jiang Cheng-style discourse about anyone in SVSSS or TGCF, which makes me wonder if the number of conflicting sympathetic perspectives in MDZS is unusual. (Though it's also possible that it's out there and simply hasn't breached my dash.)

I think Novel WWX and Drama WWX are in opposite quadrants of some sort of Venn diagram where the Y-axis goes from "did everything wrong" to "did nothing wrong" and the X-axis goes from "regrets everything" to "regrets nothing." Drama WWX cares deeply about the people around him and feels remorse for his actions, but CQL painstakingly rearranges plot points so nothing is every actually WWX's fault. Meanwhile, Novel WWX has done many atrocities and is largely like ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ about everything.

jgy gets classic coffee--it's a classic for a reason! also because he probably only treats himself when working towards a deadline

jc is also a classic coffee guy, but he knows jin ling is going to steal from his tub when he visits, so he buys the coffee cookie cream swirl stuff, because he's a softie

jzx strikes me as a pineapple coconut kind of guy

jzn gets flavourless and weirdly textured frozen dessert because he doesn't deserve nice things

lwj used to choose the classic vanilla until he discovered vanilla bean, and now that's his go-to

lxc, same as above, until jgy treated him to divine raspberry cheesecake, and now he's very normal about it

nhs is of course all about decadent dulce de leche, you can't change my mind

nmj doesn't understand why everyone here can't just be happy with goddamn chocolate ice cream, why do you have to make everything so complicated, meng yao

I'm seeing around some people saying that Wei Wuxian only helped the Wens because of the debt he owed to WQ and WN. I don't really think like this, but I wanted to know what are your thoughts on this matter. Would WWX had taken such drastic meansures to help the Wens if he didn't owed them a debt? Would he go to the extreme of defecting from his sect and hiding with the Wens in Burail Mounds?

So since this fandom is a shitshow I'm going to take a wild guess that the ppl saying Wei Wuxian "onLy helped the Wens because of the debt he owed to WQ and WN" are trying to cast aspersions on his heroism... as if repaying a debt at great personal cost is not already impressive (especially when it's being contrasted with jc's shitty behavior).

We've already seen repeatedly in the story that WWX will prioritize doing the right thing over his comfort and convenience. He did so when he grabbed Su She and was almost pulled down into Biling Lake with him; He did so in the Xuanwu cave when he came to LWJ, JZX.1 and MianMian's help; He did so when he was ready to sacrifice his arm for the wellbeing of Lotus Pier; when he gave jiang cheng his core because the Jiangs made him promise he would take care of him. He didn't have to do any of these things. He did them because he stood by his principles even when it was inconvenient to him. So Wei Wuxian taking drastic measures because he believes in the rightness of what he is doing is not.. new.

So clearly, Wei Wuxian doesn't only act heroically because "he owes someone. Wei Wuxian also doesn't believe repaying one's debts is separable from his morality. If he didn't believe in something he wouldn't do it just because he owes someone:

Wen ZhuLiu, “I can’t fail to repay the debt I owe their generosity.”

Wei WuXian’s expression darkened at once. His voice was harsh as well, “What a joke! Why is it that the debt you owe has to be repaid at the expense of others!”

So while naturally he was grateful to WN and WQ, he didn't help them only for that. He helped them because he knew they were innocent and had been unfairly targeted by Jin Zixun who was abusing his power. Because although revenge is framed as acceptable in universe when it's justified, it's not acceptable when it's indiscriminate; He helped because an injustice had been brought to his attention and because of his humanity and empathy for others.

Most importantly WWX brings up the matter of what the Wens had done for them trying to make jiang cheng understand why helping them is the correct thing to do. Because jiang cheng doesn't understand the concept of doing the right thing just because it's the right thing to do. Because the idea of taking innocent people, including a granny and a toddler, back to their death is fine and dandy to jiang cheng:

However, Wei WuXian clenched his wrist, “Are you joking?! If we return Wen Qing and the others to them, they’d meet nothing but a dead end!”

Jiang Cheng, “I doubt you’ll even return all of them. Why do you care what kind of end they meet? A dead end it is, then—what does it have to do with you?!”

Wei WuXian finally lost his temper, “Jiang Cheng! What- What do you think you’re talking about?! Take it back—don’t make me give you a thrashing! Don’t forget. Question. Is WWX anti-rich? I see ppl describe him like this but I don't really think so. I think he's anti-tyrrants whether they're born upperclass (Wens, Jins, Jiangs) or lowerclass (Xue Yang)? He himself doesn't mind if he's poor or rich; he expressed sadness when he thought abt how he used to have money (Yi City empathy); but he also doesn't mind if he ends up living simple. I don't think he generally hates wealth or he's "tolerating" lwj being rich like some ppl in the fandom are saying.

hmm i guess this depends on exactly how you're defining 'anti-rich'...

is wwx someone who is resents rich individuals purely by virtue of them being rich? no. his husband is rich, almost everyone he knows is rich.

is wwx someone who spurns wealth? no. he has no problem enjoying the material benefits of wealth* both in his youth at lotus pier and when he is with lwj (ch.87, x)

however, wwx is critical of some things associated with wealth, eg ostentatious displays of wealth (see his reactions to jzx, jl, and jc's use of fuxian nets on dafan mt.) wwx & lwj also refuse payment for night-hunting (intrusion) whereas jc requires gifts just so people can have an audience with him (ch.85), and the jin sect turns away anyone whose status is deemed to low (iron hook). so i think it can be said that wwx is critical of the amassing of wealth at others expense, using wealth to oppress others, and using wealth to show off or increase status.

while 'anti-tyranny' is maybe a more fitting descriptor than anti-rich, it should be kept in mind that in mdzs (and irl), the two things are integral to each other. (eg xue yang was only able to go as far as he did because of the resources and protection afforded to him by the jin sect).

*while wwx has no problem spending jfm's and lwj's money, we see that wwx generally uses his wealth to buy gifts for others (ch.18,33). we also see that he insists on paying when offered free food.

''The vendor grinned as well, “Young Master Wei, you want one? I’ll give it to you for free. Not charging anything.”

Wei WuXian, “I’ll have one. Charge it still.”'' (ch.71)

and when he asks lwj for more money in dawn til dusk, it's because he spent all his taking the juniors out to eat.

even when he's 'sad' about being poor in yi city, it's in this context lol

'He reminisced, If you stole my money, you wouldn’t have cursed in such a way. Back then, I used to be wealthy as well… Just as he was sighing about how he became so poor, A-Qing had already found her next target.' (ch.38)

tbh this doesn't read as very sad to me? esp as we see only a few chapters earlier wwx gleefully spending lwj's money (again), it comes off as pretty light-hearted. like 'ugh i'm so poor now' rather than truly lamenting about it.

so even when he has wealth, it doesn't ever seem like wwx was ever particularly interested in spending it on himself, other than for food.

This is the qUaLitY content y’all get from this blog. Also see me spamming friend about this AU. It’s junior-centered, with a dash of wangxian. This is basically a more in-depth version of what I gave my friend lol

After getting kicked out of SHIELD for questionable experiments involving Kree blood, Wei Wuxian was spying on Hydra (lead by Wen Ruohan) by infiltrating them as a scientist. However, being Wei Wuxian, he neglected to tell anyone since he got kicked out, so everyone thought he betrayed them.

So he’s at Hydra, befriending Wen Qing & Ning, and realizes that they’re good people.

But he got caught giving info to Director LXC, so Wei Wuxian makes his grand escape. He may have accidentally knocked over a terrigenesis crystal while trying to escape the Nightless City.

The terrigenesis crystal may have turned a little boy into an Inhuman (the first time anyone went through terrigenesis) and that little boy (Wen Yuan) may have accidentally burnt down the entire Nightless City.

At least, that’s how WWX explains it to Lan Wangji when he gives LWJ a child to take care of.

So, with Wen Yuan in SHIELD custody, Lan Wangji adopts him & renames him Lan Sizhui. He’s still a child (I don’t know why I keep referring to him as a little boy?? He’s like 12-ish??).

So Wei Wuxian goes off to re-join the remnants of HYDRA because they let him experiment in peace & he gets to keep an eye on them for SHIELD (even though he’s an ex-agent).

But before that, he vouches for WQ & WN to join SHIELD. And though many people there are suspicious, they do have a vacant spot for a doctor now that Dr. Wei is gone & WQ is quite good. They bring WN along too.

Meanwhile: Lan Jingyi is getting abused my his mother & his dad is working across the country so life is quite sucky for him.

Thankfully, his family has connections to one Lan Xichen (who learns about the abuse eventually) and Jingyi gets into SHIELD Academy. What he doesn’t know is that he comes from a line of people with Inhumans genes.

Which may or may not how been why Xichen was visiting.

Anyways, Sizhui & Jingyi meet at SHIELD Academy (both around 13-14?) and Lan Qiren is about to get more headaches.

Eventually, he (now 16) gets told why he was accepted on the first place & asked if he’d like to go through terrigenesis. He’s like “ok” and boom vocal mind control.

That’s actually inaccurate; he has the power to manipulate people with his voice. He has to learn how to control it though.

Wei Wuxian rejoins SHIELD! Lan Sizhui meets the person who saved him all those years ago. yay.

Little did they know, Wei Wuxian was expieriemnting with terrigenesis while he was gone but shhhhhhh-

Now onto Jin Ling’s backstory, cause his is a doozy.

Jiang Yanli got Inhuman genes from her mother. So did jc, but his powers & stuff come into play later. Wwx is their adopted bro, but due to circumstances that will be explained later, Wwx & jc are estranged.

Jyl and jzx raise jl for most of his younger childhood (until he’s about 7-8) when evil HYDRA people come in & kill jzx and kidnap jyl for Inhuman experimentation. Note, she has the genes but isn’t an Inhuman (yet).

Ling is very sad and Jiang Cheng swoops in to take him in. Jc actually worked at as a SHEILD agent back from before lxc was Director (coughxichengcough) but left when his sister was kidnapped so he could try to track her down & save her. Instead he gets his nephew.

Jc also takes over his parents’ buisness to get a source of income.

And jc goes through the woes of being a parent up until he also gets kidnapped by HYDRA. Jl also gets nabbed, but HYDRA separates them

Wwx may have been expierimenting but he tries to do it without hurting any of them, and he validates it because he prevented many people from getting cut open by explaining to the HYDRA heads that they’re most useful alive. It somehow works.

In fact, wwx is assigned to jl. The HYDRA people know wwx’s relation to jc & jyl, so they don’t tell wwx that they kidnapped jc & jyl or that they’re literally in the same facility.

Since wwx was assigned to jl, he basically helps him undergo terrigenesis and tries to determine his power.

Wwx also doesn’t know that jl is kinda his nephew. But he pities him, so he maybe helps jl escape, but in a way so that no one realizes it because he still has his cover to maintain.

(also, I forgot to mention: jyl’s kidnapping caused jc & wwx to become estranged).

So wwx may have had a very loud conversation near jl’s cell about some of the exits and also teaches jl the basics on his Inhuman ability. maybe the device he uses to control jl’s powers happened to malfunction in the middle of the night.

Ling, not knowing that wwx is helping him, uses his power (energy manipulation) to break out and makes a run for it.

He manages to escape (wwx had a very detailed convo about the building’s layout) and gets the hell out of there.

Jl’s smart enough to realize that since HYDRA knows where he lives, that he probably shouldn’t go back home.

He really wants to get his uncle back (and maybe his mom, but he’s not sure she’s still alive) but has like no idea how to use his power to do anything except bomb stuff. & that only works like half the time.

Jin Ling is about to kill a bitch but then he remembers that his uncle gave him an address to go to if anything ever happened (remember, jc is an ex-SHIELD agent so bad things happen quite a lot).

Meanwhile, despite his carefulness, wwx got caught and HYDRA is deciding whether or not he will die. Wwx, being the genius he is, takes all his stuff and gets the fuck outta there.

He decides to go visit his kinda-boyfriend (that he may or may not have been ignoring for like 13 years), lwj back at SHIELD. He also wants to see how the Wen siblings are doing.

So WWX goes back to SHIELD, only about an hour before Ling arrives. In jl’s defense, he had no idea that the entrance to a secret government organization was a quaint little music shop.

He just kinda... walks in, and everyone is freaking bc they have been breached but sees him and thinks “huh he kinda looks like jc” and then lxc thinks “oh no what happened this time”

Lxc introduces himself and jl (being the second best matchmaker here, second to only lxc) accidentally reveals that jc talked about him before.

Lxc is pleasantly surprised (gay) and asks jl to come with him into his office so that they can... chat.

On their way, they pass by the science lab. Wei Wuxian, who just came back to base, is happily walking along with Lan Sizhui, when all hell breaks loose.

Remember when I said that wwx was quite secretive about helping? And that jl is still upset bc he never got his uncle back and he can’t lose another family member, not to them?

So obviously jl does what anyone would if you saw the guy who forced you to undergo a life-changing event and was involved in the organization that kidnapped two of his family members and killed his dad: he attaccs.

If you also remember, I mentioned that jl has no fucking clue what he’s doing. All he knows is energy and boom boom.

And the mini-explosions only work in close range, from what he’s seen. So in his anger, he unlocks a new skill: energy shots.

Wei Wuxian took cover like the second he realized who was attempting to kill him and screaming at the others not to kill his assailant no matter how annoying he was.

Lan Wangji sadly wasn’t at base, but Sizhui was, and he can certainly hold his own against Ling, especially since Sizhui has had more time to train with his power.

Luckily, Jingyi swoops in & uses his voice to force jl to stop. They handcuff him and lxc drags him away into his office.

It’s safe to say that the science lab corridor is fried.

That’s basically how jl got introduced to SHIELD (he eventually joins and learns the truth about wwx, which makes all their past interactions quite awkward).

Now we have Zizhen, who comes into the story after the two Lans have become agents but before the whole Jin Ling fiasco occurs.

Sizhui & Jingyi were sent to see if Agent Ouyang Xingyun (@yoitsamy’s oc older sis of oyzz)‘a family knew where she was because she was on a undercover mission & didn’t check in with her contact last week. + she didn’t contact SHIELD so Director LXC was worried.

They look through the window and everything is a mess, so they kick down the door and try to find anyone. The whole place is torn apart, like people were fighting there.

In the upstairs bedroom, they find Ouyang Zizhen & four of his younger siblings huddled together in a corner, protected by a forcefield-like shield. Once they realize the Lans aren’t a threat, the go back to SHIELD HQ and put in a room there until they can figure out wtf was going on.

Apparently, Zizhen unlocked his powers w/o terrigenesis when they got attacked by someone who was looking for his sister and used it to protect his siblings. They hadn’t seen their big sister in weeks.

So the Lans have a new case to solve, SHIELD has two new Inhumans with off circumstances, and Lan Wangji is one Xichen away from killing Jin Ling.

THE LOTUS POND FANDOM HC. please for the love of god talk to me about how Lan Zhan plans to keep this one a secret from Wei Ying. Talk to me how he had to... be civil to JC and convince him to coax WWX to LP for an entire season. How LZ is knee deep in water and mud like JZX and how sometimes its a chaotic mess when his niece and son and the other kids jumps in to help. How its now an entire Group Project with progress report for JC. GIVE WWX LOTUS POND 2K4EVER

The building of the lotus pond is actually coming up pretty soon in Twelve Moons! So the gist is, when Lan Wangji comes home from Lotus Pier to help Lan Xichen and the rest of the CR squad get ready for the conference in Qinghe, he announces his intentions to formally propose to WWX after JC takes back his place as Sect Leader Jiang and asks LXC what he should do for a betrothal gift, because his own ideas are limited to Write Yearning Music For Husband, cook his Absolute Favorite Meal, carry him around Lotus Pier so he doesn’t have to walk, raise his Precious Son(s), and so on. But a betrothal gift needs something a little more tangible, just because the actual presentation is supposed to be a one-time thing, so LXC suggests making a lotus pond...and then he promptly ropes Wen Ning and the juniors in to help, because getting muddy is somewhere around #4 on Jingyi’s list of top hobbies and Wen Ning has experience from helping WWX with the lotus pond at the Burial Mounds. In the end, WWX gets to see the pond in springtime, after he officially comes to the Cloud Recesses as LWJ’s intended and takes up residence in the jingshi.

Three guesses as to which accomplice in Yunmeng actually sent over the lotus seeds. X)

Wei Wuxian had a dream.

He dreamed of Jin Zixun’s twisted face, of a hundred flying arrows, of a shattered silver bell, of scarlet spreading across Jin Zixuan’s robes. So when the red is dripping down his own chest instead, the pain barely registers.

He doesn’t remember falling.

Just before his eyes flutter shut, he makes out his Shijie’s husband rushing towards him, stunned but alive and whole.

He smiles in relief and lets the dark engulf him.

...

He wakes up confused and disoriented. There’s dirt lodged in his throat.

After a long fit of inelegant coughing and spluttering, he finally gathers enough energy to look around, eyes watering. Seconds later, he comes to a conclusion.

He has no idea where he is.

...

Three years ago...

A fair distance away, Sect Leader Jiang stands upon his family’s burial grounds, Zidian crackling on his finger. Several servants and disciples cower before him, heads bowed, trembling.

Jiang Cheng lifts his hand and they flinch back, waiting for the blow. It doesn’t come. Instead, Jiang Cheng gestures to the torn up, empty grave.

“You and you. Tidy it up.” His voice is steady as he gives his orders. “The rest, find whoever did this and bring them to me. Alive.”

He turns without another word, blood seeping from where his nails have sunk into flesh.

Wei Wuxian has been wandering for the better part of the day now. When he’d woken, it was already late afternoon and he had no energy to do more than lie back down. After an evening’s sleep, he’s slightly better, though he still feels weirdly shrivelled and very hungry.

It’s once again afternoon by the time he finds a village. And he finally knows where he is. Kind of.

By the sounds of the local accent and street foods, he’s near Yunmeng.

...

Those first few days, Wei Wuxian was forced to rely on his face and his lady-wooing skills to earn meals. Though once it was a young lady’s brother who turned red and stuffed a steam bun into his hand. He’s still a little confused by that.

Thankfully he was able to start night hunting along the way to earn some spending money. Wei Wuxian contemplates getting a horse but his funds are really too limited. Alas, he still has no golden core so travel is slow, but at least his demonic cultivation is in tact.

On the other hand, there’s a strange strength flowing through his limbs that reminds Wei Wuxian of fierce corpses. Is that what he is now? Certainly, he hadn’t possessed anyone; this is his own body. The thought is a little troubling but he brushes it aside easily. Living each day as it comes, that’s his motto. The “living” part is already a mystery.

He is snapped out of his musing by the sounds of battle up ahead. Young voices are exclaiming in frustration and fear. Wei Wuxian runs towards the commotion.

Drawing near, he spies purple sect robes and familiar sword patterns.

Wei Wuxian hesitates, but only for a split second.

He hasn’t really thought about his plans going forward. Avoiding the thought, to be honest. It’s been almost ten years since that day at Qiongqi Path and it’s enough to feel like a lifetime. He figures he’ll go take a peek at the people he once knew and then...then what?

Go back to the Jiang Sect? He already defected.

Where was his place now, as a long dead, previously feared demonic cultivator?

...It doesn’t matter now. Saving lives comes first. Wei Wuxian slips seamlessly into battle and the ghouls stand no chance.

As most of the Jiang disciples fall to the ground in exhaustion, one of the older ones comes to greet Wei Wuxian formally.

“Qianbei*, we owe our lives to you. May I ask for the good name of our saviour?”

Wei Wuxian grimaces instinctively at the words of gratitude. He waves a hand carelessly. “My surname is Wei. It was no trouble.”

“Ah, Wei-qianbei. Please, come back with us to Lotus Pier for some tea. Let us thank you properly. It isn’t far.”

This time, Wei Wuxian shakes his hand even harder.

“It’s fine. No, really. I don’t want anything in return...”

He backs away and turns to leave. And stops dead.

A pair of familiar eyes are staring back at him, slowly widening in disbelief. There’s a long moment of silence. Then...

“Ahaha.” Wei Wuxian scratches his nose sheepishly. “Jiang Cheng. Did you miss me? It’s been a while.”

I have a general outline of this story and requests and/or prompts are welcome. For now, I’ll reveal some of my ideas, though nothing is set fully in stone:

Wei Wuxian is resurrected 8 years after his death. Jin Ling is 8 years old and Lan Yuan is 10.

How did he come back? WWX doesn’t know, but he’s going to find out. I fully admit it’s a little deus ex machina, but it’s hard to find a foolproof method anyway.

Lots of Yunmeng Bros.

WangXian dating. Stay tuned for their reunion lol.

A-Yuan is a total wingman. The Jiangs know about A-Yuan. JC secretly likes him but pretends not to. Jiang Yanli fully adores him and asks LWJ to have him visit a lot. LWJ uses this as an excuse to visit WWX’s grave.

After Qiongqi Path, and after JGS shows his true colours, JYL refuses to stay on Golden Koi Tower. She moves back to live at Lotus Pier with her son. It’s all incredibly scandalous. JZX technically stays in Lanling, but he actually chills at Lotus Pier when he has no duties. Though, around 2-3 years later, JGS dies and JZX becomes Sect Leader.

Nie Mingjue dies 3 years after WWX.

JGY’s story should pretty much follow canon, though the timeline is obviously shifted. And MXY gets to live! Poor kid deserved better.

Endgame = WangXian get married, probably?

What I’ve been doing: Staring for hours at the papers I’m supposed to be reading.

What I’ve been thinking: If everyone in mdzs had X-men style powers, LXC should definitely be a Telepath, even though Lans traditionally have ice or water powers. (He could have that too, or just that. QHJ, LQR, and LWJ all have ice powers)

The Jins should all be some style of Empath; JGY would be weak because he starts out late, he can’t really manipulate feelings but he’s excellent at reading people’s feelings and manipulating them without his powers, through words and stuff, until he starts strengthening himself enough to push NMJ over the edge? JGS basically uses it to get laid easily, and to convince the weaker sect leaders to side with him. JZX grew up hating his powers because his mum hates it, and keeps them under tight control, so far that he becomes pretty insensitive to normal emotional cues, leading to that mess with Jiang Yanli. Once he opens up to her he falls head over heels in love. Jin Zixun... either doesn’t have it, or it’s broken and always makes people around him angry and irritated, it’s his special power. Mo Xuanyu has it too, but like JGY it’s not strong enough to affect other people, and worse: when people are miserable in his presence they suspect him and hurt him for it.

JC and YZY are laughably easy; they summon purple lightning and call up storms. JFM and JYL have a horticultural thing, they can grow flowering plants really well. It seems stupid at first, but then you get to Lotus Pier, and you realize it’s practically a fortress when either of them are home, because there’s lotuses everywhere. The Wens don’t attack until JYL is in Meishan, and JFM is away for a reason.

Wen Ruohan’s branch of the Wens have fire powers. Wen Qing’s are healers, the WQ is the strongest in generations.

Who am I leaving out? The Nie. They actually have me stumped; telekinesis?

A year after Jin Zixuan’s betrothal to Jiang Yanli was changed in favor of him marrying her brother instead, Jiang Cheng visits Koi Tower. A visit that ensures much awkwardness because neither Jiang Cheng nor Jin Zixuan are good at admitting and voicing what they really feel.
