Alright, I've collected my thoughts on Izzy's death a bit.
So, in my opinion, there are two main reasons why it was so jarring:
The first one is that it being crammed between Stede and Ed's reunion and the innkeepers stuff does make it look like the authors just wanted him out of the way. Which is further enhanced by the whole "they are a love triangle" talk from David. The problem is, Izzy is not the evil bad yaoi manga style homewrecker who is only there to be an obstacle for the main characters to overcome/jealousy bait. Not after all the development he went through in this season.
The second one is that they somehow made the guy's whole death scene about Ed. Sure, for the season one Izzy that would be expected, he was in fact absolutely obsessed by his role as Blackbeard's guard dog/enabler, but here we are talking abou Izzy who sung a song for the crew to cheer them up after being tortured, Izzy who threw a whole piracy crash course for Stede Fucking Bonnet and cheered him up when he was doing a good job, Izzy who was willing to share advice on overcoming trauma with Lucius (and gave him a lovely whittled toy shark), Izzy who a couple of scenes back confronted the nose guy because he felt almost parental responsibility for the safety of the crew. But then suddenly, in one of the most important moments of his life, all we're talking about is how the crew is Ed's family who love him (do they really?), and Izzy is just his dying pet. After the whole season of development into being his own person and building meaningful connections with others.
I don't think he should have been immortal just for the fact that he's a queer character, but the way they handled his death was pretty fucking tasteless. It was kinda shit. Yeah. It fucking sucked. Hard.

I wish I could say I found this, but someone else posted it, and before I could reblog it, tumblr washed it away.
all props to the OP!

every few days i think about izzy's character arc, and every time i just wanna scream long and hard in frustration
his death was so unsatisfying and so painful and i will remain feral, unhinged and petty about it

OFMD S2 FINALE SPOILERS
.
.
.
Can I just say, it was cruel of the ofmd writers to make finding yourself and learning to love yourself central themes in this season, only to not let Izzy do either and be the only character to die in the finale. I mean seriously, what the hell?

OFMD S2 finale spoilers
So, from someone who watched OFMD in one sitting from the beggining until 2x07 - I absolutely loved it and it all felt very cohesive to me. I didn't notice any quality drop between the seasons. But the finale... it was kind of a whiplash. The Kate Bush merman scene and this undercooked supercut of all the plotlines can't be happening in the same season.
Izzy has grown to be my fave (I was surprised and heartwarmed that most of the fandom feels the same). I cried during the gifted horse leg scene. The more he kept calling everyone a twat, the bigger my heart grew for him (and that's testimony to Con's incredible acting). He was so bitter but you knew what he was yearning for deep down. Calypso's Birthday was an icing on the cake for Izzy's character.
And then they fucking killed him and I didn't shed a tear because it was so out of pocket and rushed and immediately followed by a wedding.
I loved Ed throughout the season, I could sympathize with him and his ruthless violence was a great hyperbole of something we all feel during a heartbreak. So I absolutely hated how he got coddled by the writing and never actually apologized to Izzy. BlackBonnet got a happy ending but it felt mellow and completely anticlimactic. Their 2x07 conflict hasn't been resolved. It was obvious that Ed was panicking because he was scared to get hurt again. They should've talked about it.
I know it's mostly HBO's fault and the writers probably did the best they could with the budget and screen time left.
In summary: streaming services are ruining our culture. Thank you for your attention.

OFMD spoilers!!!
I just wanted to put in my two cents about the Our Flag means Death finale cause the best thing to do when you've been mentally devastated is to talk it through as a crew.
I've not made it a secret that I've fully fallen in love with Izzy this season, and for the past week I've been going mad over the concept of killing him, and now that its happened I've just got this horrible numbness that's offensively close to the grief of losing a family member. I'm halfway embarrassed about how upset I am about this death cause it's my first time fully grieving a fictional character so this is all very foreign to me. I'm also seeing Jesus Christ Superstar tonight so I'm just gonna be crying into my mum as my Izzy Hands brain rot worsens.
I'm just so disappointed in the writers for doing this. Taking a queer character with a disability, putting him through hell and watching him crawl his way out of rock bottom. We've seen him become more comfortable in his own skin, relax, become more sociable, and overall become the best version of himself he could be.
And we didn't even see him fully reap the fucking benefits of this growth.
Killing off a character for the sake of another character arc, especially in a show as unconventional and comforting as this one is a sloppy, cheap, and borderline offensive writing trope. I am unbelievably mad at David Jenkins right now.
HOWEVER
This anger doesnt stop me wanting a season 3. Our Flag Means Death is an incredible show with incredible characters, an incredible plot, and incredible representation. Its so important to so many people and one loss doesn't take away from the sheer amount of good its done and continues to do. I wanna see Stede and Ed and their little inn, I wanna see the crew heal and bond and have more silly little moments, I wanna see Ricky fucking die.

Since Izzy is paralleled to Mary in "Uncomfortable in a Married State", he deserves to get his own Doug.

I LITERALLY just remembered something that I have felt weird about for weeks. Ok gay pirate women episode of ofmd with Anne Bonny and Mary Reid they are just sooo horny the entire fucking episode and they're so violent but they love each other and at the end of the episode they have this nice little moment in the flames and ever since I've seen it I've been talking about it because it just feels off. They do not kiss there. They are the horniest characters on the show and they make fun of Ed and Stede for not having sex yet but they don't kiss there in their big pivotal I love you moment from the episode
And when I saw that when I saw them get that close and then skirt away I thought to myself hrmm, that felt like the homophobia of "era's past" and I said that is really weird, it's really weird that in this show where every person is queer they did not let these two women kiss
Now my friend said maybe it was actor preference and sure maybe but it just didn't sit right with me and it didn't fit. So I thought maybe, maybe the network will have limited how explicit they can make this but then no because Ed and stede have their kiss next episode and I would've been like oh they took that kiss from the girls so they couldn't do it. But then they kiss harder and they go all the way and they have sex and I said hmm. And then lucius and black pete are very affectionate and stede and ed get their other really big kiss in this last episode and I'm just like hmm. (Although I can't remember exactly but Pete and Lucius might not kiss after the proposal and hold that thought)
And now. Now. We have Izzy Hands. And he's been killed for seemingly no reason be it tonal or for a character reason. And he was killed in a very confusing very out of character way. And then the creator of the show goes on to describe his relationship with ed as a "father figure." And I can't help but think that this, again, feels like-- reeks of the homophobia of "days past."
And I think that's why I've been so confused the last few weeks. At a glance this appears to be a decidedly queer show. So why then, why then is it falling back on things that buffy or supernatural did. Shows that were created for different audiences in a "different time" why are we once again hiding and skirting away from kisses like willow and Tara had to do or killing our gay characters from non fatal wounds in a barn on a ship and rewriting their relationships, claiming they have no family. Why are we doing this? In a show about queer love and acceptance? In 2023?
The days of typical queerbait may have passed with the passing of supernatural but there is something dark that I am noticing in this season of ofmd and I really do not like it. And I am in no way saying that this show is queerbait because that is ridiculous but why, in our own shows in shows made for us that aren't being put out on cable or anywhere where people wouldn't know what it is. Why does it feel like our shows are being censored?

Its kinda wild to me that Izzy has never been the main character to a Digimon season
especially in a timeskip or 10 years later sequel
Like Izzy is so good with tech, he can build transporters to the digital world
You telling me he's never figured out how to hack Tentomon to turn him into a megaubersuper level digimon?
