I think the portrayal of Spider-Man 2099 in Across the Spider-Verse is in-character in that aside from like Shattered Dimensions he's always been portrayed as a bit of an asshole who slips into anti-hero territory at times and generally has a "needs of the many over the needs of the few" mindset and given his specific circumstances in the movie it's not unreasonable to think he could take the actions he does. However it does kinda suck that since like 99% of moviegoers had no idea who he was before the movie came out their first impression of him is when he's in an antagonistic role and people think "antagonist" and "villain" are synonyms so now I'm gonna have to listen to people who've never read a comic saying he's a villain or isn't a real Spider-Man for the rest of time or at least until he inevitably changes his mind in the third one.
#hell you don't even need to read a comic just look up a let's play of spider-man edge of time you'll get what i mean#but yeah i saw a post that was like#''the first movie had a joke about how spider-man doesn't wear a cape and miguel has a cape they did that to show he's not spider-man''#as if he hasn't had that cape since his creation 30 fucking years ago#he's not even the only spider-man to have one. spider-man unlimited is also a thing that exists.#even the first movie had that call-back joke where they see the peter from miles's universe had a suit with a cape#these movies have a lot of little details with deeper meanings but the cape thing just isn't one of them sorry#but yeah. play edge of time or find it on youtube it's good.#shattered dimensions is also good but miguel's personality in that game is closer to peter's for some reason#so edge of time is better for getting a feel of what he's usually like#but yeah i do think spider-verse miguel was probably more straightforwardly heroic like other versions before the whole dead family thing#and i think he and the rest of the spider society are just genuinely misguided about how the whole canon event thing works#cause like george and gwen don't die in every universe peter doesn't get the symbiote in every universe#even uncle ben doesn't die in every universe#but miguel THINKS those things always happen. that's why he got the others to believe it cause he genuinely believes it himself#and i think they all take comfort in the idea that these bad things that happen to them happen for a reason#i know that's josh keaton's interpretation for why spectacular peter joined and i don't disagree with it#that's also why i disagree with people saying that miles is The Only True Spider-Man There just cause he was the first to outright reject it#look me in the fucking eye and tell me spectacular peter and insomniac peter don't understand what it means to be spider-man#or actually don't cause i'll bitch slap you into next week if you do#miguel o'hara#marvel#shut up tristan

DC Comics used to pretend Superman was a real person
Tumblr media
One of the most common stories about Superman is that kids would break their legs jumping off a roof trying to fly like him. Parents were very nervous about kids imitating his super feats, and these stories were common even in my own childhood. There’s even a story that in the 1950s, a kid brought an actual gun to shoot George Reeves with at a public signing, fully expecting the bullets would bounce off. Stories like this are often used to show how gullible and silly the first generation of kid comics fans were in the 30s and 40s. I mean, did kids not know the difference between reality and fiction back then? How dumb were they?
Tumblr media
The answer is that they did know the difference, but you kept hearing stories like this about Superman and only Superman because there had been a sustained effort by National Periodical Publications to blur the line between fantasy and reality, which can only really be compared to Kayfabe in professional wrestling. There was a desire to have Superman be real, or at least, real in the mind of children, the way Santa Claus is. And to that end, you might notice some very strange things about the first generation of Superman media. Like for example, in the radio show, Superman was credited “And starring Superman….as himself.” Bud Collyer, the first actor to ever play Superman, went totally uncredited for years at DC’s insistence. This arrangement suited Collyer just fine. He liked getting paid, but wanted his name associated only with “serious” performances.
DC stopped pretending Superman was real for the reason you might guess: this was going too far and getting suggestible kids hurt, and to this day, they seldom mention this was a deliberate strategy to market the character. I have yet to see any comic historians discuss this; even they, who should know better, just throw their hands up and say “man, those old 40s kids sure were dumb.”
Tumblr media
Likewise, it was an incredibly difficult task to find the first actor and man in a suit who played Superman in live action, in the 1939 World’s Fair in Queens, New York, during Superman Day. Ray Middleton is a name that is thrown around (and is Wikipedia’s answer, but Wikipedia is always better at giving dubious flat answers than acknowledging controversies), but the evidence it is Ray Middleton is not convincing enough for me, and is only the best guess, which is kind of important as he was the first man to ever play Superman in live action. Let me repeat that: DC was so keen to preserve kayfabe that we actually do not know the name, with complete certainty, of the first man to ever play Superman in live action. Superman was advertised as being there “in person.” Superman’s adventures were described as being “transcribed” in DC Comics. When Superman had a balloon in the 1939 Macy’s Parade, it was described as being a balloon of Superman, not of a character. It’s all very strange and seldom discussed now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To this day, there is one lingering effect of DC treating Superman as a real person: comic fans prefer for Superman to be played by an unknown, and react with skepticism when well known actors and personalities like Josh Hartnett, Stallone, and Bruce Jenner are offered the role.

Lion I was singing Joanna from Sweeney Todd cuz I’ve been hearing the josh groban version all over tiktok and now I’m contemplating fully getting into it. Where do I start??
Tumblr media
(insert public apology for using boomer meme templates to get the point across)
would that i had finished the deranged comic sans powerpoint 101 for sweeney todd by now i would link it here but as it is it still needs a lot of work before i'm even remotely comfortable posting it hOWEVER that doesn't mean i can't still be of some assistance
(disclaimer: i am about to throw a LOT of information at you and you are by no means obligated to try and digest it all at once please instead do so at your leisure/your level of interest instead)
sweeney todd 101 cliffnotes version for people who want to get into sweeney todd by someone who is way too invested in this show
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
sorry to anyone who doesn't like the office this is the only cold open that matters to me in this particular stage of life rn
so for those who aren't already familiar with sweeney todd (or have a passing familiarity with it either via sweeney todd related tiktok content or other similarly related content consumption) one of the first things i would recommend starting with is the 2007 tim burton film since it's a pretty good place to start (and also easily one of the best film adaptations of a musical imo). you can find it on hbo max or on youtube for 3.99 if you don't have and/or want to pay for an hbo max subsciption. (you can also 🏴‍☠️ it because capitalism sucks. remember to sail the seven seas* responsibly!)
Tumblr media
johnny depp and helena bonham carter in sweeney todd (2007) dir. tim burton
now if you're interested in other productions (and/or not particularly interested in the film) there's the 2014 half concert half staged proshot starring emma thompson as mrs. lovett and christian borle as pirelli that you can find on youtube for FREE (here is a link to act one and another link to act two AND a link to the opening on it's own because it is absolutely PHENOMINAL i genuinely can't recommend it enough).
Tumblr media
emma thompson and welsh opera singer sir byrn terfel jones in sweeney todd: the demon barber of fleet street in concert 2014
there is also the original 1982 proshot starring some of the original cast such as angela lansburry (unfortunately len cariou, the original sweeney does not reprise his role BUT george hearn does a phenominal job in the role). you can find this one on amazon for 3.99 to rent or it and a plethora of other musical proshots on BroadwayHD for 11.99/mo but unless you're interested in watching other musicals and plays on BroadwayHD i would suggest renting it on amazon or 🏴‍☠️ it for free if you know where to look (i honestly don't know what pirating musicals looks like outside of yt bootlegs and i am still very very new to actual bootleg trading so you'd have to ask someone else)
Tumblr media
the late dame angela lansburry and george hearn in the 1982 proshot version of sweeney todd
and finally, my personal favourite, the 2023 broadway revival. unfortunately we only have five singles that have (officially) been released (which you can find here on spotify) but we also have the official ballad of sweeney todd performace from this year's tony awards AND there IS a way to watch it if you are like me and can't afford to fly to new york and see it at the lunt-fontanne theater (just dm me for the details). this is quite possibly my favourite version of this story and if great comet wasn't already an indicator that josh groban is a great fit for broadway this DEFINITELY is imo.
Tumblr media
josh groban and annaleigh ashford in the 2023 broadway revival of sweeney todd that i am definitely very normal about
other recommendations include sideway's video essay on the music in sweeney todd, christine baranksi's version of worst pies in london (and her criminally underrated version of a little priest with kelsey grammar in a 20th anniversary concert version that i would give my left kidney to see in full), imelda staunton and michael ball's version of a little priest from a 2012 revival, patti lupone as mrs. lovett playing the tuba in the stripped down 2005 broadway revival, lin manuel miranda's sweeney todd themed hamilton parody for broadway cares featuring the funniest jonathan groff cameo i've seen in my life (and the recent ham4ham version performed by the current 2023 revival cast) and my last braincell when confronted with literally any sweeney todd related content these days.

A scheming husband plants two lovers up to their necks in terror. A malevolent millionaire with an insect phobia becomes the prey of a cockroach army.

wada sez: Jhiaxus tinkering with combiners means this is probably IDW continuity, though otherwise it doesn’t have any clear link to events in the comics. Blades was established as a horrible guy in his Budiansky bio, and this strip elaborates on that by revealing that he was an ex-Combaticon. There are some random robots on the bridge in the first panel, but I can’t identify the rightmost one—any ideas? Prowl? Wheeljack?

Best Animated Movies on Netflix for a Visual Feast
1. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)
Tumblr media
Director: Joel Crawford
Cast: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Wagner Moura

Sequels released over a decade after the first film are always a gamble, but Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was one of multiple films from 2022 (Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water) that actually improved upon its predecessor. Eleven years after the first Puss in Boots, the eponymous rascally cat has now burned through eight of his nine lives on his various adventures, reteaming with Kitty Softpaws in pursuit of the Last Wish, which would restore his lives. Along the way, he tries to outrun Goldilocks — hoping to attain the Last Wish for herself — and a menacing wolf who mysteriously stalks Puss. Like other DreamWorks films post-Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the blend of 2-D and 3-D is striking in its visual texture, particularly in action sequences, but its darkly authentic themes of anxiety and the value of friendship resonate most of all.
2. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017)
Tumblr media
EW grade: B+ (read the review)
Director: David Soren
Cast: Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Nick Kroll, Thomas Middleditch, Jordan Peele, Kristen Schaal
Lights, camera, VPNaction! Elevate your movie nights with NordVPN. 🎥🔒secure your connection and Download NordVPN . Click now to unlock global cinematic thrills!
The wildly popular Captain Underpants book series has kept kids entertained since 1997, but it wasn't until 20 years later that the tighty-whities-clad hero made it to the big screen. The First Epic Movie centers on George and Harold, fourth-grader best friends who create the Captain Underpants comic book and hypnotize their strict principal into becoming the superhero — who doesn't actually have superpowers. Kid-friendly without being too mind-numbing to their parents, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie has "charm to spare," praises EW's critic, noting it works "mostly because it never tries to be more or less than what it is." It also spawned a series on Netflix, The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, which ran from 2018 to 2020.
3. The Angry Birds Movie (2016)
Tumblr media
EW grade: B (read the review)
Director: Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly
Cast: Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage
While it may be damning with faint praise to give credit to The Angry Birds Movie for not being a total disaster...it really could've been much worse. Based on the wildly popular app of the same name, the film follows Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), a talking bird who comes to suspect that his island's new pig inhabitants have malicious intent. Your mileage may vary depending on your tolerance for punny/juvenile humor, but as EW's review notes, the film "delivers a mildly diverting mix of winky meta-jokes and moral lessons, cannily aimed at both the next generation of tiny consumers and their more sophisticated parents.
4. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022)
Tumblr media
Director: Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson
Cast: Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Gregory Mann, Burn Gorman, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton
Codirectors Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson transport the classic story of Pinocchio to World War II-era Italy in this meticulously crafted stop-motion animated film. Following the death of his young son, carpenter Geppetto cuts down a tree and carves a wooden boy, who is subsequently brought to life and dubbed Pinocchio. As the boy ventures to the outside world, he is met with dark forces that attempt to use and corrupt him, all against the backdrop of Benito Mussolini's reign as leader of Fascist Italy. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a darker take on the tale compared to the well-known Disney adaptation (which also received a far-inferior live-action remake in 2022). From the fraught setting to the detailed creature designs, del Toro and Gustafson create a distinct world while providing valuable life lessons to viewers of all ages. The film became the first Netflix production to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
5. The Sea Beast (2022)
Tumblr media
Director: Chris Williams
Cast: Karl Urban, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste
Lights, camera, VPNaction! Elevate your movie nights with NordVPN. 🎥🔒secure your connection and Download NordVPN . Click now to unlock global cinematic thrills!
A brave orphan girl named Maisie stows away aboard a ship of sea monster hunters in The Sea Beast, helmed by Big Hero 6's co-director Chris Williams. The sailors are renowned for their hunting abilities, though their status is threatened by their society's admiral, who wishes to replace them. They go out on one last hunt to track down a powerful sea beast called the Red Bluster, but, as Maisie soon discovers, the creatures may not have the kind of malicious intent for which they've come to be known. With dazzling colors, fast-paced thrills, and classical storytelling, it's easy to see why The Sea Beast became Netflix's most watched animated original film as of October 2022, according to the streamer. The film also earned a Best Animated Feature nomination at the Oscars, following a wave of critical praise.

Daredevil (vol. 1) #98: Let There Be -- Death!
Read Date: February 21, 2022 Cover Date: April 1973 ● Writer: Gerry Conway ◦ Steve Gerber ● Penciler: Gene Colan ● Inker: Ernie Chua ● Colorist: George Roussos ● Letterer: Shelly Leferman ● Editor: Roy Thomas ●
Tumblr media
**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● ugh, I hate it when characters refer to themselves as "hero." I don't think that's a label that can be self-applied. Does that bug anyone else? ● oo, Daredevil gets bitch-slapped
Tumblr media
● I feel bad for the guy under Dark Messiah. I hope Mordecai Jones can be saved. ● so Josiah can create sonic vibration from his hands… ● MacAbee can control the elements… ● and Uriah can control reality ● with these powers combined, they are the DISCIPLES OF DOOOOOM! (no literally, that's what they're called) ● Dark Messiah drops the force field, then he and his Disciples just fuck off somewhere, leaving DD to ask, "dafuq?" ● Daredevil knows he's heard the heartbeat before but can't recall where ● heh, at least Matt has his sunglasses in a drawer and wasn't wearing them under his cowl like he used to ● out in San Francisco, Mordecai and his Disciples of Doom are carrying out a cleansing of some kind. their first victim, a cable car ● Black Widow's recent wound from Man-Bull acts up on her and she passes out from pain ● I think this might be the single most creepiest panel I've yet come across on my comic reading adventures (and I've seen the Transformers' holomatter human avatars and their creepy fixed smiles!) :
Tumblr media
● they take the fight into a local shop, and the proprietor shakily holds a gun on them ● jeez, did Dark Messiah just kill that guy on panel? o_0 ● Daredevil: "Come off it, Mordecai! You're no god--just an overgrown kid with weird eyes and a talent for acrobatics!" -- DD, you literally just described yourself… ● but DD jogged his own memory by saying "acrobatics" and remembers where he's heard that heartbeat before ● … so Dark Messiah just… exploded when he was forced to remember who he was? ● 👏👏
Synopsis: Forced to fight the Disciples of Doom alone, Daredevil is easily overmatched by the group who leave after showing him their power. Resuming his civilian life, Matt eventually resumes his Daredevil guise when the Disciples attack the city with their powers.
The Black Widow aids Daredevil in the fight, however she overtaxes herself due to her injuries sustained battling the Man-Bull and has to sit out the fight. Daredevil battles each of the Disciples one-on-one defeating them all until he faces the Dark Messiah. Finally recognizing him as the street performer Mordecai Jones, Daredevil confronts him with this truth. The Dark Messiah denies this, and such denial causes a backlash of his powers, that explodes seemingly destroying himself and his followers, although Daredevil survives the explosion.

I understand franchise stuff is a hit or miss and could not be appealing, but I still kinda wish he had another go at a comic book movie or short or series, for the hell of it
I mean, Oscar Isaac did X-Men: Apocalypse (Fox; New Mutants was also a Fox film) and then a few years later did Moon Knight (MCU), the former not well-received but the latter got better reception for the most part
Marvel also recently did a good standalone TV special, Werewolf By Night, which was more gothic horror-like and tonally different from the goofiness of the movies, so maybe something like that and not like a massive blockbuster project or series to commit to (for now)
Oh I think I’d like to see him in a gothic horror in general, actually—that could be interesting
Let’s normalize not thinking of being in movies as just Marvel or big franchises. There are so many other projects that are so much more interesting—that are prestige/do film fest circuits or are with a good director or are the kind of indies or even smaller studios that get distribution. Like look at Paul Mescal’s, or George Mackay’s or Josh O’Connor’s filmography, or even Joe Alwyn’s or Harris Dickinson’s or something.
But agreed on gothic horror anything. There also just needs to be more gothic across all periods in general. I think we know Charlie supposedly auditioned for Pale Blue Eye but it went to Harry Melling (who has another great filmography altho it’s still so funny to me he was Dudley lol).
