Julian Fellowes on Thomas Barrow’s Storyline in Downton Abbey: A New Era

Giving Barrow a happy, but honest, ending was important for Fellowes. “Despite the difficulties that were placed in front of gays, some people managed to work out compromises, and that meant they could live their life. And I wanted that to be Thomas’s story,” said Fellowes. “In the end, he found a way of living his life that was compatible with the society he found himself in. And I think that was the truth. Representing the truths of the time was important for me. It was a very sad time. Displays of homosexual affection were punishable by life imprisonment.”

Not sure that “waiting around till you win the [supposed] lottery” is the same as “working out a compromise”, which to me implies a level of activity and agency that I don’t see Thomas exhibit in DA2 at all…

But I’m really here to say that “Displays of homosexual affection were punishable by life imprisonment” is actually factually incorrect for Thomas’ era.

I don’t want to downplay that two years (often with hard labour) for “gross indecency” (= any display of homosexual affection, introduced in the Labouchere Amendment of 1885) were absolute horror and literally did shorten men’s lives.

But is it too much to ask the man who appoints himself to be the one who brings us “the truth” about queer life in the UK at the time to at least get his facts right, and not blow them out of proportion or be off by several decades to suit his “all queer people did nothing but SUFFER” agenda?

It was only “buggery/sodomy” (= proven penetrative sex, according to the Offences Against the Person Act of 1861 as amended by the Penal Servitude Act of 1891) that carried a life sentence; according to some sources, convictions didn't exceed 10 years at the time.

i’m sry but i don’t see the appeal of david or exer. they’re good characters but they’re rly not too interesting to me. obviously, exer has a good arc, but jackson kinda has the same one? like when u take off the rose-tinted glasses, u see that exer has a hatred for jackson in s.one, even if he hasn’t done anything remotely bad to him at the time. and guess what? JACKSON HAS THE SAME TYPE OF ARC IN S.TWO EXCEPT HE HAS A GENUINE REASON TO DISLIKE EXER?? i can’t stand the fact the fandom brushes over exer’s actions like they wouldn’t affect someone and paint jackson as this big bad villain who did it all for malicious reasons. however, i recognise jackson has also done some rly dicky shit in the new episode, which is y i’m neutral abt both of them.

okay time for david. there isn’t anything inherently wrong abt him, i js don’t find his character trope very interesting. i will say his battle with homosexuality and his daddy issues are endearing , but i’m js not too interested in his personality. ofc many ppl can relate to him and it’s a reason y he’s so popular, it’s js he’s kinda a boring character without those two arcs. genuinely i did not care for him in s.one., he was a nice guys, i js didn’t find him interesting then.

the BIGGEST reason y i js don’t rly like them is bc THE OTHERS R SO UNDERRATED IT PAINS ME. like where r my brenda fans? pamela? RON? LITERALLY ANYONE IN THE DETENTION GANG?? they're all super fun to watch and i think they deserve more attention. like if u add the amount of jamala fics and ronothy fic together, it only adds to A QUATER OF DEXER FICS ON AO3. LIKE BOTH RELATIONSHIPS R ACC SO SWEET AND THE DYNAMICS R AMAZING ITS SOSOSOSO PAINFUL TO SEE THEM BE OVERLOOKED. honestly 92% of the fandom is made up of david/exer stans so i’m not surprised y jackson is hated.

I FINALLY FOUND THE PROPER TRANSLATION TO THIS SONG

!! SPOILERS AHEAD !!

Not many are familiar with the anime adaption of Les Mis “Shoujo Cosette” and I find it quite saddening to realise as it was something that practically made up my ENTIRE childhood and even years later, it hits harder than ever. (psst psst it’s actually what introduced me to Les Mis in the first place, most my fellow Arabs know where I’m coming from here 👁)

I’m aware that very few are fans of this version, and the rest either aren’t familiar with it or dislike it for the small changes in storyline and character designs. Or the fact that it they had to mild it down a little for younger audiences. It never got the recognition it deserved unfortunately and it gathered dust as I grew older, but I always rewatch it whenever I can for nostalgia. And since I don’t see many posts on it, I wanted to give it a shot myself as a huge fan of this version myself and see how others find it. Hopefully more fans would sprout out or join the squad. 😌

Before I strand away from the main point of this post, I finally managed to find the English translation to that somber little Japanese song that played in the background as the barricade boys died.

“Watashi ni dekiru koto” which roughly translates to “Something I can do”

This by far might be the only version without background noises available, because as I said, this anime sadly isn’t very popular.

I think you're being a bit too judgy based on her SM.

Not really and no offense, but i am fucking tired of this performative activism, not only from Ashlyn, from celebrities overall, especially when it's about trans people. We are being hunted by the conservatives and the extreme-right, being labeled as the worst things you can imagine and being killed in name of that biogtry. This thing all of them do of thinking that simply "Spreading Awareness" is enough it's just for them to feel they are a good person, when in fact it's the "woke" version of "thoughts and prayers" from the conservatives when a school massacre happens.

Do you really care? Then show it. Go to DC, try to talk with your representative, work in lgbt youth center, create a foundation or an organization to help in the aftermatch of this hunting GOP is doing, anything that is indeed an action against this, a silly story in a SM is nothing compared by the machine that has been building over the decades to degrade minorities. They have access to stuff that regular people don't, they can reach out important people that most of us can't, but they choose that a t-shirt and a SM post that last 24h is enough to call themselves activists.

You know who is an good example of activism? Angelina Jolie. She donates most of her money to help refugees, she has many organizations around the world that gives refugee women a way to work and get money to provide for their family outside the donations while spreading awareness about their issues. She is one of a few big A List Celebrities to be openly pro-Palestine and work for a permanent cease-fire in the region. But you dont see her posting those stuff in SM cause she only has them to give voice to other opressed people rather than just post a picture of her personal life.

And again, they dont need to turn their SM on just about it, but it's hard to believe they are really passionate by this or that cause when they just do the bare minimum. It just seems as something to please their audience rather than for actually trying to help.

you think about women.

as i’ve grown up, i’ve realised i have a certain gravitation towards female characters in media. every show i watched, no matter how old or young i was, a girl would always be my favourite.

for paw patrol, it was skye, greenhouse academy, it was brooke, harry potter, it was hermione, gossip girl, serena, and stranger things was max. i notice how much i feel myself being pulled towards characters i can relate to, wether it’s just through a simple gender. being able to feel that similarity with a character is such a special thing.

for me, i always liked the incredibly smart girls, the ones that were sometimes overlooked, their full qualities not seen just because they’re ‘smart’ or ‘pretty’, the token girl in what was usually male-dominant groups of protagonists. i feel like i know how these girls feel. i can see myself in them, and looking back now, i can see how growing up with so much female representation and incredible role models, such as emma watson, laverne cox, anne hathaway, viola davis, angelina jolie - those are just a few of the women who i either spent my childhood looking up to, admiring, wanting to be just like when i was older, or do the same with now. when it comes to important role models for young girls, you don’t think about appearance, ethnicity, or their political views. you think about the one thing that you know for a fact you share with these people. the one thing that you can relate to, no matter what.

you think about women.

if you do not know how some of the women i mentioned contribute to feminism, there are links attached with articles where they have talked about it! it is a far from everything they have ever said about the topic, but i hope it gives you some insight if you aren’t already aware.

Jolie’s thoughts on

Silver Blaze Part 3 & 4

(Sherlock & Co. podcast)

No, I tell a lie, because I still have stuff from part 2 that I wanted to point out, too:

I‘m a tiny bit obsessed with John's "doink - doink - doink" sounds after they cross the river.

I also laughed out loud at the Romans clearing out at 3:45.

And there’s a very sweet moment, too, that I didn’t really notice before, when they look at the victim‘s body with Inspector Gregory and Watson goes on about possible reasons why a single blow with a stick could have inflicted such damage, osteoporosis etc and Gregory thinks he’s just rambling, but Sherlock absolutely knows he’s not and nudges him back on track with that gentle "What are you thinking?" Because it’s not just John who wants his Sherlock to shine on a case, it’s the other way round, too!

And I honestly hadn’t noticed until the third relisten that at the very end of part 2 when they’re sneaking around Mapleton, John is basically solving the whole effing case just when Sherlock turns up and interrupts him!

Well, on to part 3 & 4!

Sherlock getting a black eye this time rather than a broken nose, yay, we love variety in our hero whumps. I could listen to entire episodes of Sherlock getting hurt and John looking after him.

Sherlock and John faking a legit job to get the information out of the local bookie was such a classic ACD scene, the way they work together completely seamlessly in situations like that is so great. I’ve also seen it pointed out that Sherlock can be so awkward with people when he’s being himself, but he’s always so confident and at ease when he’s just playing a role and being completely fake (without needing a break afterwards or telling us it’s exhausting, too!). That’s a totally fascinating contrast.

Part 2 had John accidentally solving the mystery of the murder weapon. Part 3 has John basically paving the way for the dog deduction. I love a competent Doctor Watson who knows exactly what he’s doing, but I also love it when he’s truly being Sherlock’s famous conductor of light.

John being canonically a Bond fan, love how they’re still incorporating so much BBC Sherlock fanon into this show. I‘m now eagerly waiting for Moriarty and Colonel Moran to be hot young men who have hot sex with each other, too.

"No more than you’re being human" - "Me more than you, mate" - Can ALL the John Watsons of this world please instantly stop dehumanising their Sherlocks and calling them robots or machines. I can accept it maybe up to their third case together, but in any adaptation that I know, the Sherlocks have proved themselves to have a big heart and to have it entirely in the right place, too, by case 4 at the latest. I don’t like to see any Watson regressing to the cheap laugh of "Sherlock’s a machine and doesn’t have feelings" after that, and I dislike it especially in this version where we get a Watson who is particularly well-attuned to and tolerant of Sherlock’s neurodivergence. Sorry, rant over.

Hey and I was right in my prediction that Sherlock didn’t drop John's phone at Mapleton Stables by accident but left it there on purpose! Even if I assumed it would be recording audio evidence rather than be used as a tracker. Which of course begs the question, did Sherlock really manage to somehow connect his phone to John’s and enable tracking in the very few seconds he had before Silas Brown turned up with the gun? Or is he always tracking John‘s phone as a matter of course? And if the latter, does he do it out of care/worry for John‘s safety and wellbeing, or is he doing it in a creepy/possessive way?

Anyway. After listening to part 4, I must admit I am somewhat underwhelmed by that bit… I don’t know what it is, but parts 1-3 are positively bursting with humour and action, while by part 4 I felt they had kinda lost the momentum. There’s nothing really wrong with it, and maybe it feels different when you’re not familiar with the original story and every revelation is truly jawdropping and not just ticking a box. Maybe I‘m also a little underwhelmed that the final denouement at Aintree is so… private. The horse whose disappearance - we are to believe - has GRIPPED THE NATION and is THE news story of the year is just back, and everyone’s just fine with it? No comments from anyone involved in the case? No congratulations from the owners? No bittersweet relief from Edi and Ned? No genuine relief from Fitz? No acknowledgement from the official police? No tearjerking speeches in parliament? I‘d say if you start a story on that kind of epic scale, you shouldn’t end smaller. I really wanted all those loose ends nicely tied up and got… none.

I also either missed something important, or we never really learned the reason why Mapleton kept hiding Silver Blaze? I see how they took him in at first, maybe thinking they’d get a big reward or ransom, or wanting to pass him off as one of their own, but the way it is, they just hide him for no reason and then give him back for no reason?

Am I being too critical?

The thing with the "S" and the "5" was clever though. And poor John and his abysmal Air BnB rating was hilarious, too.

can i say Unraveled (ill skip the rant) other than that Flashback, it physically hurt to read because it felt like a badly written fanfiction it was when her writing really started to go down hill.

in Everblaze where Grady finds out that Brant kills Jolie, and he mesmers him into putting the ball of Everblaze over his hand. Brant still had control over his ability instead of putting the fire out he let his arm burn. why would he do that? was he punishing himself? Sophie begging Grady to stop, calling him Dad when they where still growing into a family, Grady only stopping because Sophie begged him too, just just -

Marcua no one can answer the question of what is her character without making head cannons, meaning she brings NOTHING to the series, (there is to many character problem with the series) (but like i also make to many characters in my original stories so i can’t judge)

they are both evil the Black Swan is just sneakier about it, they created a weaponized child and while they tell her she has a choice she really doesn’t, they now are working with the council who are the corruption they claimed to be standing against. they want power just like the Neverseen they are just going about it a different way.

Teaching at Nevermore was certainly exceptional. You taught the exceptional so it really was to be expected, but what wasn’t expected was for you to be quite so unpopular. Truthfully, you didn’t know quite why you were so unpopular with the students but you knew they would rant and rave about Morticia Addams. The potion teacher was understandably gorgeous, her pale skin reminding you of when moonlight hits the lake at night and her long raven hair shaping her face like the night sky does with the moon. Yeah it was safe to say you could see the appeal. But it didn’t mean that it hurt any less being the unliked one.

It began to affect you when nothing changed a few months later. You got to know Morticia in that time, truly she was magnificent and you were happy to call her a friend, but she began to notice how you’d get sad in the halls when students greeted her and not you, or when you heard how well her class treated her and not you and when she overheard a conversation between two students about you her heart broke.

They didn’t know you, that much was clear. But to her you may as well as hung the stars, sun and moon in the sky. The thought of you feeling so low and insecure about yourself bothered her to no end. Now she’s very affectionate so she began to formulate a plan to make you feel some sort of better. Learning of your little crush from the students, she knew just what to do.

Morticia had asked you to come to her room for a chat, you truly had no idea what for. Your classes had been murder all day, all you wanted to go back to your room and drown your sorrows in a nice bottle of red wine. Yet you couldn’t ignore her request so you made your way to her room. When you arrived you were met with her sat on the edge of her bed, the floor length dress draping on the floor as her neckline plunged into her milky breasts.

“mon chéri” she practically purred at you, the sexy French accent only adding more to her list of why she’s perfect, “come here darling.” Instantly, your feet abiding by her command as you came to stand in front of her. “You’re beautiful” she murmured seemingly lost in her own thoughts only to be broken from them with a snort from you, “yeah right” you muttered dejectedly. Hands came to cup your cheeks, “absolutely gorgeous, stunning, inside and out jolie fille.”

A few stray tears leaked from your eyes at her words, maybe it was due to the fact you handing herd them before or maybe the sincerity in her voice, you didn’t know. “Don’t cry mon chéri, I mean every word of it. And I’d very much like to show you just how much I truly mean it” she murmured as the pads of her thumbs wiped the tears away. A sweet kiss placed to your lips had you crumbling into her embrace. “Can I show you just how much I adore you?”

With a quick nod and mumble of please Morticia set straight to the task at hand, stripping her dress off her body to make movements easier. You had an article of clothing removed before she bestowed kisses on the now exposed skin. She was showering you with so many compliments that truly you felt like you were the most beautiful girl in the world. By the time you were fully naked you were in tears. “Oh baby. Don’t cry love it’s okay, you’re so beautiful. Let me make you feel good mon chéri?”

Once you’d consented mortica set to work ensuring one thing, that you’d feel good. She didn’t mind about herself, she just wanted you to see yourself how she saw you. Her tongue lapped at your folds ever so gently at first and she worked you to the edge, her hands coming up to roll the pert buds of your breath between her thumbs and forefingers. “Please” you whimpered and she knew you were close. “If you wanna come Mon chéri then you need to say one simple thing. I’m beautiful inside and out. Can you say that baby?
