𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫-𝐲𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 | 𝐣𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐡 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐧 𝐱 𝐟𝐞𝐦!𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫
𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: dr. joseph quinn is set to speak at an important conference, and, of course, he invites you, his assistant, to come with him. after months of pining and flirting, what can go wrong when the hotel only books you one bed? part one of three 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: joseph quinn (professor!au) x fem!reader 𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐬: rpf (real person fiction), drinking, praise kink, smut (MINORS DNI): kissing, heavy petting 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞: big thanks to @lunatictardis for her help with this fic! you're the best mea! also this was TOTALLY inspired by his professor vibes on day 3 of fanexpo nola hehe
Tumblr media
“I’m really glad you asked me to come with you.”
That roused Dr. Quinn out of his sleepy reading. The plane around you was pretty quiet, although gaining volume the imminent descent, but that didn’t stop Dr. Joseph Quinn from blinking blearily as he looked up from his pages of notes. He was set to lecture tomorrow morning, one of the opening lectures at a conference centered on English literature, and your professor— and boss— had insisted you come with him.
“Well, of course,” Dr. Quinn said quickly. He often chastised you for calling him Dr. Quinn, always saying “Call me Joe, love”, but nothing ever felt as right as Doc. Sometimes, during quiet, appreciative moments, you would call him Joseph, but Joe was a far-fetched dream. “You’re my assistant, I’d be crazy not to bring you.”
“But I’m just your TA,” you rebutted. “I’m not, like, a personal assistant or anything.”
“Eh,” Joseph shrugged. “Close enough.”
“But I’m glad you asked me,” you continued. It had taken a lot of convincing from him for you to even come— “it’s over Christmas holiday, so you won’t be missing any classes; the university will pay for airfare and the hotel; you have nothing to worry about, other than being there for me.”— but, in the end, you were being honest. “It’s the chance of a lifetime. I’m excited.”
“I’m glad you think so,” Joseph said. He groaned and rolled his neck and began to pack up his notes, sliding them into a pocket of his briefcase, and he mumbled, “I cannot wait for this bed. My back hurts from these damn seats.”
“Oh, yeah,” you groaned. The plane seats were less than optimal, and you chewed on your bottom lip. “And you booked us two rooms?”
“The university did,” Joseph said, peering at you from over his glasses. “So, if anything is fucked up, blame them.”
“I will,” you smiled. An ugly feeling persisted in your gut, though— something would go wrong, you were sure of it. You always had had a good intuition, and that sinking feeling was present as the intercom binged on and announced your arrival in London, far from your home.
There was a car waiting for you at the airport and, after getting your luggage, you squeezed in next to Joseph and gave him a tired smile. You were both exhausted from a long day of traveling, and you were just as much looking forward to the bed as he was. Maybe a hot shower, or even a bath, if your room had a bathtub.
You tailed behind Joseph as he entered the hotel once the car delivered you, and he gave the woman at the front desk a good-natured smile. Your boss was handsome, there was no denying it. He was so handsome that, if he wanted to be a movie star, he could have been. Instead, he had chosen to teach English literature, and, because of his— albeit short but prosperous— career, he had been asked to attend the conference and give a lecture on tragedies, something he had studied throughout his entire academic career.
“Hello there,” Joseph said to the receptionist. “Um, I have a reservation under the name Quinn.”
“Mr. Quinn,” the receptionist repeated, and she clicked on her computer for a moment. “Ah, yes, I see you— one room, king bed?”
“Oh, goodness.”
Oh goodness, indeed.
“No, no, there’s been a mistake,” your boss said quickly, pushing his glasses up on his nose. He looked suddenly distraught, and he furrowed his eyebrows as he tried to understand the snafu. “There were supposed to be two rooms, one for me and one for my assistant.” He gestured at you, and your grip on the handle of your suitcase tightened.
You knew it. Your gut had told you once again that something would go wrong, and it had.
“I’m sorry, sir,” the receptionist said. “We don’t have any other rooms; we’re all booked up for the conference. There’s a sleeper sofa in the room?”
Joseph clenched his back teeth and looked over his shoulder at you, and you shrugged. “I’ll be fine, sir,” you told him. “It’s just for two nights.”
“Yeah, but…” Joseph started, and he turned back to the receptionist. “There’s truly nothing you can do?”
“I’m sorry,” she said again. “We’re all booked up.”
Joseph sighed, his thumb tapping on the handle of his luggage. “It’s alright,” he said. “Thank you, darling.” He took the keycards from the receptionist’s waiting hand and slipped them into the pocket of his slacks, and he looked at you. “After you, love,” he said, and you sighed as you started out of the lobby, in search of the elevators.
Joseph only spoke again once you were alone in the elevator. “I’m really sorry,” he said.
You shrugged. “It’s out of your control,” you told him. “I’m not upset.”
“Are you sure?” Joseph asked. “Because it’s okay if you are. I’ll take the sofa, you can have the bed.”
“Oh, God, no,” you said quickly. “No, sir, this is your conference, you’re gonna be working all weekend, you deserve the bed.”
“But I can’t just let you sleep on the sofa,” Joseph said. Behind his glasses, his eyes were big, dark as night and wide as he pleaded with you. “Please, take the bed, it’ll make me feel better.”
The elevator dinged up to the fifth floor, and you took the charge, leading Joseph to room 525, the one that the receptionist had identified as yours.
You waited for Joseph to unlock the door, and the familiar smell of hotel room filled your nose as the door opened. The air was stale but clean, and you peered inside to see the one big, white-clothed bed, the indicated sleeper sofa under the window on the opposite side of the room. It looked uncomfortable, and you took a seat on it as Joseph settled his luggage next to it. The springs squeaked underneath you, and you frowned wider as you looked at it and realized that it was, in fact, not a sleeper sofa. It was just a regular couch, one hardly big enough to fit you, let alone Joseph. “This isn’t…” you started, but sighed instead. “I knew I had a bad feeling about this trip.”
“Hey, don’t say that,” Joseph said with a scowl. “We’ll get this sorted out and everything will be alright. Maybe somebody will cancel a room and we can get it.”
“I know,” you mumbled. “But, God, I just… Sorry. In a bad mood.”
Joseph’s frown grew, and he sat down next to you, rubbing your back soothingly. He had always been like this, very tactile and sweet with you, but never crossing boundaries. You could tell that he truly appreciated your work as his TA, grading papers for him and sometimes leading class if he asked for you to, and he was always very thankful for you, sending you flowers and buying you coffee all the time. “Dr. Quinn, you know other professors don’t treat their TAs like this,” you had tried to tell him once, but he had just smiled at you. “I know,” he had responded with that movie star smile. “But other professors don’t appreciate their TAs the way I do you.”
Sometimes you wondered if there was more than met the eye with your boss, but there would be no avenue to explore that; he was your boss. Before he was your boss, he was your professor. It would be unprofessional at the very least and, if you were caught, you would lose your job (and likely your scholarships) and Joseph would more than likely be asked to leave the university. So, all of the lingering touches of his hand to yours and laughs shared over dinners would have to be relegated back into nothingness— no feelings, no actions, nothing.
“What can I do to fix this?” Joseph asked, his eyes a little wet as he looked at you. “I just hate seeing you so upset.”
“Maybe…” you started, chewing on your bottom lip. You were dehydrated from the flight, and your skin was dry, and you sighed. “Maybe we could share the bed? It’s big enough for both of us, and if we put, like, a pillow barrier in the middle…?”
“Oh, love,” Joseph said softly. “You know we can’t do that.”
“Who has to know?” you asked. “If we don’t tell anybody…”
You almost worried that you had offended him, with the way his silence stretched on and on, but the wrinkle between his eyebrows told you that he was legitimately thinking about it. “Let’s talk about it more tonight,” Joseph said finally. “After dinner, yeah?”
“Alright,” you agreed. The way he didn’t immediately say no lifted your spirits slightly, and you stood up, brushing dust off of your skirt. “What’s for dinner?”
Joseph smiled at you, his movie star smile that made your legs nearly buckle, and he slotted his hand with yours. “Whatever you’d like.”
Tumblr media
Dinner ended up being down in the hotel restaurant. It was a little busy, but you and Joseph managed to find a table for the two of you, nestled into the back corner. You almost preferred it that way, secluded and apart from everyone else. You and Joseph were used to dinner together— he often would order take-away to his office while you were helping grade essays, and you always would end up abandoning the essays and talking together— but never anything like this. The candlelight made everything feel intimate, like it was almost a date.
“Wine?” Joseph asked, looking down at the menu in his hands. He still wore the clothes he had worn on the plane, slacks and butter-yellow shirt, his hair messy and his glasses perched just so on his nose, and he looked exhausted, but he was the usual ball of composed energy that he always was.
You shrugged. “I don’t really like wine,” you told him. “But if you want some, go for it.”
“Don’t like wine?” Joseph repeated, his eyes playfully narrowing at you. “What sort of academic are you?”
“I just don’t!” you giggled. “Unless it’s really good. I just don’t like anything that’s bitter.”
“What the fuck…?” Joseph grumbled, turning the menu over to see the wine list on the back. You laughed, and his smile betrayed his grumpy attitude. “Don’t like wine, I don’t believe you for one second.”
“I just don’t like the way it makes me feel,” you told him, side-stepping the real reason you didn’t want to drink wine around him. It made you feel easy and loose, in a way that you probably shouldn’t be around your crush-slash-boss. You settled on a better reason: “It makes me feel like garbage the next morning.”
“Well, we don’t want that, do we?” Joseph asked. “I’m gonna order a red, but if you want something else, tell me.”
“Should we be drinking right now?” you asked teasingly. “We’re technically working.”
“Ah, live a little,” Joseph shrugged. “We’re not at work right now. If we were at a lecture or a panel, that would be different.”
Live a little. Sure. “Order me a glass too,” you told him. “Let’s drink a toast.”
“To?” Joseph asked, tilting his head curiously.
“Getting through one hell of a semester,” you said. “And to give us strength for the next one.”
“Hear, hear,” Joseph said with a smile.
Once you had the wine in your hands, you found yourself becoming less uptight. Your shoulders relaxed, and you settled your arms on the table as you leaned forward and listened to Joseph prattle on about the lecture he had to give tomorrow morning. “I’m honestly nervous,” he said, rotating his glass around and watching the wine move with it. It was a dark red drink, something that made the corners of your mouth curl with its sour, dry bitterness, but the warmth that grew in your chest made you keep drinking it. “I’ve never been nervous to teach before, but this is so different.”
“It’s a different crowd,” you told him. “It’s not students this time, it’s other educators. Just think about it like you’re sharing something cool with your friends, don’t think of it as a lecture, exactly.”
Joseph looked at his wine glass, then at you, and a small smile crossed his lips. “What would I do without you?” he asked, leaning closer to you.
“You’d be way behind on grading,” you giggled, and Joseph smiled wider. “I don’t know, sir. I really like working for you. You’re just awesome, so I’m glad that you like me.”
“Aw,” Joseph said. “How could I not like you? You’re so kind and funny, and you’re… Really gorgeous. I like looking up from my grading and seeing you sitting on the couch in my office, working on your own schoolwork. You always get this-this look on your face, like you’re thinking so hard— a little wrinkle between your eyebrows.”
“You do the same thing,” you told him. “I must’ve picked it up from you.” You sipped at the wine, frowning at the bitter taste again, and Joseph took notice.
“You don’t have to drink that,” Joseph told you gently. “I can order you something else.”
“No, no, it’s fine,” you told him quickly. “I just… I just like spending time with you.”
“Really?” Joseph asked. He seemed taken aback by the topic change— maybe by the content of the topic change itself— but a flush under his beard told you all that you needed to know; he was flattered. “I like spending time with you too.”
He inched closer to you still, close enough for you to feel the warmth radiating from his chest, and you moved closer to him too. Your knee touched his, but neither of you made any movements to stop it— instead, Joseph let his hand touch your leg, his thumb soothing up and down your knee.
“I just like you,” you told him. Your hand drifted down to his hand, grasping his fingers, and Joseph raised his big brown eyes to your face, watching your lips as you sipped at your wine again.
“This is a bad thing we’re doing,” Joseph said softly, shaking his head gently. “You should tell me to stop.”
“Stop what?” you asked. “I like it a lot. What if I want you to do more?”
“You’re asking for trouble,” Joseph said quickly, his grip tightening on your knee.
“What if I like trouble?” you asked.
That struck your boss silent, and he leaned back for a moment, watching you with his owlish eyes. “The bed,” he started, and you deflated. Of course he would stop it before it got good. “I’m more than happy to take the couch, I’m telling you. We don’t have to share or anything.”
“It’s big enough to fit both of us,” you said. “Dr. Quinn, please, I know what I’m doing.”
“I don’t think you do,” Joseph said flatly. “Because you keep looking at me like that, and you won’t call me by my first name, and you’re practically begging me to share a bed with you, you have no idea what you're doing to me.”
“Oh,” you said softly. “Docto… Joseph. I’m not trying to… I don’t know, seduce you or anything.”
“But you are,” Joseph said. “But I’m not upset about it. In fact, I like it. It’s been a while since anyone’s tried to seduce me, and, darling, it’s lovely to be seduced.”
You were taken aback. You truly weren’t trying to do anything, and the fact that you had an effect on him made your head spin. Maybe it was the wine. You took another drink as you watched Joseph, his hand still on your leg, his lips looking perfectly plump and soft, and you whispered, “You’re drunk.”
“No,” Joseph said. “I’ve had one glass of wine.”
“You’re not exactly sober,” you battled. “We shouldn’t do anything if we’re both not sober.”
“I’ve waited for half a year,” Joseph shrugged, swirling his wine around in his glass again. “I can wait one more night.”
“Can you?” you asked. “‘Cause… ‘Cause I’m not sure I wanna wait anymore.”
“Pardon?” Joseph asked, his face going pale.
“Kiss me, Joseph,” you told him. “Please, I’ve been waiting too long—“
Joseph took your face in his hands, fingers grasping your chin as he drew you into his warm body, and he kissed you. Finally, it felt as if a whole semester of pining was being brought out, and fireworks exploded in your belly. His mouth was juicy and warm, his tongue soft as he slid it into your mouth, and you eagerly kissed him back as your hands grasped at the lapels of his shirt.
When the kiss broke, you frowned. You weren’t quite ready yet, and you started to chase Joseph back into a kiss, and he placated you with a quick peck. “I’ll give you all you want,” he whispered, his accent curling in your ears and making you dizzy. “Let’s get back to the room first.”
The journey back to the room was torturous. You held onto his hand as you waited in the elevator bay, and you couldn’t help your giggles when he tugged you close into his body, chest to chest. “You’re so beautiful,” Joseph whispered. “How I managed to wait so long, I’ll never know.”
“To be fair, we’ve never gotten drunk together before,” you said, and Joseph jokingly rolled his eyes.
“We’re not drunk,” he said pointedly. “We had one glass of wine each, that’s hardly even tipsy.”
“Mhm,” you nodded jokingly, and Joseph rolled his eyes.
“Fuck off,” he scoffed. “See if I make love to you now.”
“Ooh, you wanna make love to me?” you giggled. “You’re such a romantic, I figured you’d just wanna fuck and then leave.”
“First of all, where would I go?” Joseph chuckled. “We only have one room. Second of all… Do other guys treat you that way?”
“I mean…” you started. The elevator dinged and the doors opened, and you and Joseph stepped inside as you contemplated your words. “Not all guys. But enough for it to be a habit.”
Joseph cooed softly, drawing you into his body, and he softly kissed your cheek, his beard nestling just right into your skin. “I won’t treat you that way,” he said. “I’m a grown man, I won’t just abandon you at the slightest provocation. All those boys, they didn’t know what a good thing they had.”
“And you do?” you asked. “You think I’m a good thing?”
“I know you’re a good thing,” Joseph said with a softness to his voice that only made you sure that he was being honest. “It’s like I’ve always told you, you are beautiful—” he paused to press a kiss to your forehead, “And you’re funny—” Another kiss to your cheek, “And you’re a proper good time. I’ve wanted this since I met you.”
“Really?” you asked. “B-But I was your student back when we first met.”
Joseph shrugged. “Can you blame me?” he asked. The elevator dinged again, opening up on your floor, and he took your hand, leading you back to the room. Your tummy was doing flips as you walked, getting closer and closer to that bed, and you attached your lips to his neck as he fumbled in his pants for the keycard. “Fuck, love,” he whispered, turning his head a bit to expose his neck to you even more.
“Hurry up,” you giggled, and you gently bit his neck as Joseph finally found the keycard in his pocket, and he rushed to unlock the door. He tugged you in with little decorum and, once the door was shut, he pressed you up against it and kissed you.
This kiss wasn’t like the one you had shared downstairs. No, this one was hungrier, his tongue dominating your mouth and licking your lips as his hands grabbed at you. He pressed his knee between your thighs and opened up your legs, letting his thigh slot between yours, and you tugged at his curls as you moaned softly. “Fuck,” Joseph whispered, his teeth scraping your bottom lip. “You sound so pretty.”
“You do too,” you told him.
“You haven’t heard me moan yet,” Joseph said softly, and you smiled, chasing him back to you with a quick kiss.
“No,” you said against his lips. “But your voice…”
“You like listening to me talk?” Joseph asked, and you nodded. “Oh, my girl… I’ll never shut up around you now.”
“As if you ever did in the first place,” you giggled, and Joseph smiled.
“True,” he said. “When I have to talk for a living, that doesn’t make it easy to shut up.”
“How ‘bout you shut up now, and fuck me?” you asked, grinding your hips down onto his thigh, and you gasped. You could feel his hard erection through his trousers, resting pretty on his thigh, threatening to bust out of the zipper; he was big, and your tummy resumed its excited flips.
Joseph hummed contently, and he grabbed hard at your hips. You loved the juxtaposition of him, being so soft and treating you so gently, but touching you so roughly. His words were one thing, and his movements were another, and you bit your lip as Joseph shucked off his big wool coat and let it fall to the floor. “C’mere,” he mumbled and led you to the bed, laying you out and letting you feel the softness of the covers. You took some of it up in your fists and sighed softly, and Joseph’s hands went for your skirt, popping the button on the side and shucking it down your legs.
You worked to take off your coat and blouse and, soon enough, you were left in your bra and panties. Joseph grinned as he looked down at you, his big hands sliding up and down your body to feel every inch of you, and you writhed as you tried to get his hands exactly where you wanted them. “Where do you want me?” Joseph asked softly. “Tell me, my darling, I’ll do anything you want me to.”
“Want you everywhere,” you told him, pulling him back into a kiss. Your hands, although shaking, went to his butter-yellow shirt and started to unbutton it, only getting about halfway down his belly before he distracted you with kisses on your neck. “Fuck!” you gasped. “Joseph!”
“That’s it, darling,” he whispered. “Call out my name, let everyone know who’s making you feel this way.”
“Are you gonna fuck me?” you asked.
“No, darling,” Joseph told you. “I’m going to make love to you. Show you exactly what I’ve been wanting all this time.”
His kisses trailed down your body, his hands deftly ridding you of your bra before his lips attached to your pebbled nipple, sucking on it gently, just enough to make you whimper and moan. “Yes, yes,” Joseph whispered. His lips made messy kisses all over your tits, littering you with reverence, and he said, “Out with it, darling— you wanna say something, so say it.”
“Nothing,” you lied. You did want to say something to him, you wanted to say a lot to him, but you couldn’t find the words to express what you were feeling. Your heart was racing and your palms felt sweaty, and you clutched his shoulder as he hungrily captured your lips. You moaned softly at him, anxiety and nerves overtaking you and forcing your silence, and Joseph broke the kiss to remove his glasses and shove them on the bedside table.
“S’not nothing,” Joseph said firmly. “Something’s going on. Do you not want this?”
“No!” you exclaimed. “I mean, yes! I mean— Fuck, I want this, I’ve wanted this for a long time, but—”
“Fuck,” Joseph whispered. “I know we shouldn’t, I know it’s against the rules, but, darling, I just can’t—“
“No, no, Joey,” you said quickly, pressing your hands to his chest. He softened at the nickname, and you slowly started to unbutton his shirt. “Listen to me. I’m just… I’m not on birth control, and I’m fairly certain you didn’t bring any condoms to an academic conference.”
“So I’ll pull out,” Joseph shrugged.
“But I don’t want you to,” you told him. You looked him deep in his chocolate eyes, holding his chin in your hand, and you touched your forehead to his. “I want you to claim me. Make me your girl.”
“Fuck, you can’t talk to me like that,” Joseph chuckled. “You’ll make me bust in my trousers.”
“How long has it been for you?” you asked.
“Honestly?” Joseph started. “A long time. Since I was your age.”
“As if we have that big of an age gap,” you giggled.
“But still,” Joseph said. “I wanna do right by you, and if pulling out is what happens—“
“But I don’t want that,” you told him firmly. “I want you to cum inside me. I need it.”
“Jesus,” Joseph laughed. “You’re so sexy, did you know that?”
“Says you,” you retaliated, and you grabbed a fistful of his curls and tugged him into a messy kiss, mouth open and tongues dancing. “God, Joey, you’re so fucking sexy, I’ve wanted you for so long.”
“Glad we’re on the same page,” Joseph said. His hands joined yours in undressing him, and you kissed his freckles shoulders and chest as he became available to you. Nothing was enough, and you wrapped your legs right around his waist and kissed his neck. He wasn’t built, but you knew how strong he was, and you smiled into his mouth as his arms greedily wrapped around you and smoothed down your back. His chest was warm against your tits, and you whimpered as his hands fell from your back and went to his belt.
There was really no going back now…

Those Eyes!
(Joseph Quinn x Female Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: You meet Joe in a bar and the end of the night doesn’t go exactly as expected!
Word count: 2.5k
Warnings: Real person fic, so if you don’t like RPF please keep scrolling! NSFW, vaginal fingering, dirty talk. Tiny bit of angst if you squint!
Notes: My first RPF, so please be gentle!
———————————————————————
“This is so needed, what a shitty week,” you sighed as you dropped the empty shot glass on to the table with a thump, your throat burning. You weren’t sure how a week had felt about a month long, but it just seemed to have been one thing after another recently, and this night out with your friends was long overdue!
After a few pre-drinks whilst getting ready, we’d made our way in to central London and had stumbled in to the first lively looking bar we’d come across when we stepped out of the underground station. The bar was packed, the music pounding as bodies moved in tandem on the dance floor, the usual line of creepy guys crowded around the edges searching out the drunkest girls.
“I’m just going to the bathroom and then I’m gonna go out for a cigarette,” you told your friends as you rose from your seat, your friends nodding before carrying on with their conversation.
You were feeling distracted tonight, the usually easily-flowing conversation feeling forced as you struggled to join in. You had nights like these, and would usually be better cuddled up under your blanket watching a movie, but you’d forced yourself out tonight, hoping that a drink and some music would bring you out of your slump.
After using the bathroom, you paused at the mirror on the wall, running your fingers underneath your eyes, checking your make-up was still where it should be and checking yourself over. You’d bought a new dress for tonight, a figure-hugging dress, deep brown in colour and falling just above your knees. Smoothing over the soft chiffon, you took a deep breath, flicking your hair back over your shoulder as you turned and made your way out to the beer garden.
Even that was busy, despite the chill in the spring air. Finding an empty spot and leaning back against the cold stone wall, you pulled your phone from your bag and lit a cigarette, taking a long, deep drag as you unlocked her phone, scrolling through your social media feed.
“Excuse me, could I borrow that?” You turned to look at the stranger standing beside you, your breath catching in your throat as your eyes locked with his.
You were sure you recognised him, but just couldn’t figure out where from. He was tall, dressed in loose light blue jeans and a light blue shirt, unbuttoned and sitting loosely over a plain white t-shirt, his hair covered by a baseball cap. But the cap couldn’t cover those eyes.
Fuck, those eyes!
You must have stared for a split second too long, as his deep voice pulled you out of her haze. “No matter how many I buy, I always seem to lose them,” he laughed.
“Sorry! Yeah, sure,” you stuttered, holding your hand out to him, your heart skipping a beat as his fingertips brushed yours and he smiled down at you.
“Thank you love,” he sighed softly before lighting his cigarette, slowly exhaling a cloud of smoke as he handed the lighter back. “I’m Joe, it’s nice to meet you,” he smiled. You nodded, your stomach flipping as the gears in your head finally clicked.
“Joe Quinn, right? I knew you looked familiar,” you grinned. He chuckled as he took another drag of his cigarette. “You know, the cap isn’t a very good disguise if you don’t want people to recognise you,” you laughed as he took another drag of his cigarette, shaking his head in amusement as he removed his cap, pushing it hard into his pocket and running his hand through his dark, messy curls.
“You’re not the first to tell me that,” he chuckled. “I should try harder. What’s your name?”
“Y/N.”
“Nice to meet you Y/N,” he said quietly, his deep brown eyes sparkling brightly despite the low lighting outside.
“Nice to meet you too Joe.”
———————————
Once again, you found yourself checking your reflection in the mirror of the bar bathroom.
It was getting late now, and the number of shots you’d drunk had certainly gone to your head, as well as your bladder!
After sharing a cigarette with Joe, you’d gone back to your friends, and had eventually waved Joe and his friends over to join you all. Your friends didn’t have any idea who Joe was, they weren’t exactly Stranger Things fans, so apart from his own friends teasing, Joe had got away without too much attention.
You were surprised at how ‘normal’ he was. Sure, he spoke with a posh boy accent and name-dropped his co-stars more than once, but he seemed to be just a usual south London boy. Funny, confident (maybe bordering on cocky), charming. Flirty, you smiled to yourself as you locked eyes with yourself in the mirror.
You’d had butterflies fluttering in your stomach most of the night, your heart stuttering every time his soft eyes met yours. Were you imagining the spark between the two of you? Probably, you thought, but hell, you were going to make the most of the time you were able to spend with him, whether the flirting was real or just in your head.
You ran your fingers through your hair, smoothing the flyaways and straightening your parting before making your way back toward the bar.
As you moved through the crowd, the smell of sweat and alcohol finally beginning to overwhelm your senses, you noticed that the table where your friends had been was now sat empty, the drained glasses littering the surface.
You looked around, confused, jumping with a start as a hand wrapped gently around your arm.
“Where did everyone go?” You asked.
“Y/F/N was hungry so Wes has taken them to the kebab shop around the corner,” Joe explained. “I said I’d walk you around,” he smiled.
“Such a gentleman,” you teased as he reached out, taking your hand in his and leading you out of the bar.
You hadn’t realised how cold it had got and wrapped your free arm around yourself in an attempt to shield yourself from the biting wind.
“You ok?” You nodded, smiling up at him. He let go of your hand and slipped his arm around your shoulders, pulling you tight against him. “Better?” You nodded again, giggling to yourself. “What’s funny?”
“The fact that I have superstar Joseph Quinn’s arm around me,” you laughed dramatically. “Wasn’t how I was expecting to end the night.”
As you walked together along the busy street, you started to notice people staring as you passed, girls whispering excitedly to their friends, some shouting at him from across the street. He glanced across at them smiling reluctantly.
“You sure you wanna be seen with your arm around a random stranger?”
“To be honest, even without my arm around you, that’ll still happen, so I might as well roll with it,” he said quietly. You gazed up at him, his face now clouded with something you couldn’t quite put your finger on. Sadness?
“That must get annoying.” He nodded, the movement almost imperceptible. “I saw your award speech. Do they really scare you?”
“No,” he sighed. “It’s all just been a bit overwhelming. There are some who are, um, a bit over the top,” he chuckled. “But the vast majority of my fans are amazing. Let’s face it, without them, I wouldn’t be where I am. I’m going to be in a Ridley Scott film for gods sake,” he laughed loudly. “It would just be nice to have some peace sometimes, that’s all.”
Suddenly the heel of your shoe hit a stone and you stumbled dramatically. Joe’s arm slipped from your shoulders but he quickly grabbed your arm and steadied you, pulling you tight against him as he gazed down at you, taking his lip between his teeth as if trying to silence himself. For a few seconds, the world seemed to stop. His eyes wandered your face, his thumb gently stroking the skin of your wrist. “You think you should have worn flatter shoes?” He smirked. A loud laugh escaped from your mouth.
“Oh no, absolutely not hun. You do not get to take the piss out of my shoes when you’re wearing THOSE,” you giggled, motioning to his feet with your free hand. He dropped your arm, grabbing dramatically at his chest.
“Oh sweetheart, you wound me,” he gasped in mock offence. “What’s wrong with my shoes?!”
“Absolutely nothing grandpa,” you laughed. Joe stopped, his mouth falling open in shock. “Come on, we better catch up with the others,” you grinned as you began to walk away from him.
You squealed loudly as you felt fingers wrap themselves tightly around your arm, pulling you down a dark alleyway between two buildings.
“What are you doing?” You laughed as you followed him, struggling to keep up on your heels.
“Just trust me,” he said over his shoulder.
Eventually the alleyway opened up into a small courtyard with what looked to be the back doors to the shops on the main street.
Before you knew what was happening, Joe’s hands were around your waist, pulling you flush against him as he walked you backwards, the back of your legs hitting a low wall.
“I’ve been waiting all night to get my hands on you,” he whispered, his voice deeper, darker than a moment before. His tongue flicked across his lips, moistening them as his eyes roamed your face, settling momentarily on your lips before locking eyes with you once more. “Is this ok?” He asked.
Your heart was racing, pounding so hard in your chest that you were sure he must be able to hear it. Looping your fingers into his belt loops and pulling him even tighter to you, you nodded silently, not trusting yourself to speak.
He smiled, lifting you off your feet and sitting you on the wall. Using his knee to push your legs apart, he settled between your thighs, his hands now in your hair. “Do you have any idea how beautiful you are?” He breathed, lowering his forehead to rest against yours, his eyes falling closed as the tip of his nose brushed gently against yours.
“Joe?” You said softly. He opened his eyes slowly, his pupils so blown that the chocolate shades were now pitch black. “Just shut up,” you whispered with a sigh, leaning forward to finally capture his lips with your own.
His hands tightened in your hair, a soft moan falling from your lips as he pulled gently, angling your head up towards him as his tongue swiped gently against your lips, begging for entrance, which you gladly granted.
Your head was spinning, but not from the alcohol. From him. From the taste of alcohol and cigarettes on his tongue, the smell of the cologne he wore, the softness of his fingertips as they ghosted across your neck.
Your lips chased his with a quiet whimper as he broke the kiss, chuckling as he lowered his lips to your neck, leaving desperate open-mouthed kisses as you wrapped your legs around his thighs, gasping aloud as he rolled his hips against you. You pushed back against him, a shock running through your body as you felt his hard cock against your heat.
His hands were on your thighs now, his mouth leaving a trail of kisses along your collarbone, the feeling of his teeth gently dragging across your skin sending shivers down your spine. His hands reached the hem of your dress and he paused, lifting his head to look at you.
“Still ok?” He whispered breathlessly, and you nodded eagerly.
“More than ok,” you gasped. “Joe, please…”
“Shh, it’s ok love,” he assured you. “I’ve got you.”
His lips met yours again, more intensely this time, his tongue licking in to your mouth. His hands moved swiftly upwards until they met the seam of your panties, and your lips faltered for a moment as he pushed them aside, his fingers moving against your heat.
“So wet for me already,” he smirked as his fingers found your clit, drawing a loud moan from deep within your chest, your back arching, pushing your body hard against him. “You like that, huh?” He said, his lips so close to yours that you could feel his breath.
You nodded desperately, your hands gripping tightly to his strong arms, feeling the muscles flexing beneath your touch as his fingers began to rub small circles against your most sensitive spot. Your body betrayed your attempts to stay quiet as a pathetic whimper slipped from your lips. “Uh uh, don’t go quiet on me now love, let me hear you.”
Joe’s hand stilled, his hips shifting as he moved himself, his thumb now pressed against your clit as two of his fingers teased tantalisingly at your entrance. “Tell me what you need,” he breathed.
“You,” you gasped as his fingers gently eased just slightly inside of you. “Please,” you begged again, your body squirming beneath his touch.
He lifted his head, watching your face as he pushed his fingers further into you, a cocky smirk spreading across his lips as your eyes squeezed shut, your mouth falling open as you gasped for air. His thumb began to rub small circles against your clit, his fingers curling inside you, almost instantly finding the spot that made your body tighten around him.
Your head fell forward, resting against his shoulder as your hands slipped under his shirt, your fingernails scratching hard against his stomach as they made their way downwards. Your fingers closed around his jeans button, but his free hand grabbed yours roughly, pushing it behind your back, your fingers laced with his. “Uh uh,” he shook his head.
“I wanna feel you,” you sighed.
You realised how pathetic you must sound, but you just couldn’t find it within yourself to care.
“And you will,” he promised. “But not yet,” he added with a smirk as he lowered his lips back to your neck, his tongue flicking gently at the soft spot just below your ear. “Fuck, you feel so good baby,” he groaned, his fingers curling just right inside you again, a strangled moan slipping from your lips again as your free hand grabbed hard at his wrist between your legs, silently pleading him not to stop as the tension inside you intensified.
“Are you close?” He whispered, his lips ghosting against your skin as you nodded desperately. “Come on baby, let go for me.”
As if your body had been waiting for his permission, your orgasm ripped through you, your vision turning white, every nerve in your body firing at once, his name falling from your lips like a prayer. “That’s it,” he mumbled, letting go of the hand he had held behind your back, grabbing hard at your hair again, kissing you hard as his fingers worked you through your peak. As the waves of ecstacy subsided, your kiss grew softer, gentler, and he pulled his hand from under your dress, slipping it around your waist and holding you tightly. “You good?” He asked quietly, lifting his head to gaze down at you.
“Hmm,” you nodded, your tongue flicking out to wet your lips as you tightened your legs around him, a guttural growl rumbling in his chest as your hand ran down his body, palming at his hard cock through his jeans.
“Have you got anywhere you need to be?” He asked.
“No, why?” You asked with a cheeky smile.
“You’re coming home with me,” he said firmly as he pulled you to your feet. “I’m gonna fucking ruin you.”

“Are you fucking kidding me? Stop that!”
“What?! We have to check everything! Otherwise, we’ll be stuck in here forever!”
“This is not how escape rooms work, Joe!”, you practically shrieked with frustration. You rolled your eyes as you tried to pry his fingers off the clearly fake window frame adorned with the escape room company’s logo sticker. “Did you not listen to the instructor? He clearly said that anything with that sticker on it, does not belong to the riddles...let it go!”
“Fine.”, he hissed, quickly withdrawing his hand from the fake window and out of your grip, wiping it on his trousers as if you’d sullied it with your touch. He then took a couple steps away from you to the other corner before opening his mouth again. “And don’t fucking touch me again.”
“Oh, don’t worry, Quinn. I won’t.”, you promised, your eyes rolling in exasperation which he didn’t seem to notice. With a frustrated deep sigh, you turned to walk in the other direction to check out a cupboard that you hadn’t searched through yet. Joe immediately answered your sigh with a scoff.
You had already been 45 minutes in which meant you only had 15 minutes left and you hadn’t even made it out of the first room yet. You had Zach to thank for all this. Fucking Zach, man. He had invited you to play an escape room duel with him, his girlfriend Iris, the sweetest human being that had ever graced this planet, and a mystery friend. Now, an escape room duel was a face-off between two teams, with the first team to escape winning. Piece of cake, right? But Zach, that utter moron, had failed to mention that the mystery friend would be none other than your sworn nemesis: Joseph Quinn. Seriously, he could’ve invited anyone but him.
Honestly, Joe and you hadn’t always been at odds. There was a time, from waaay back in primary school up to the day you graduated from secondary school, when you used to be best friends. You had even harboured romantic feelings for him, which started around year nine, but you never really made them known because you hadn’t wanted to jeopardise your friendship. So, you had just sat on them and suffered in silence when he would show up with his new catch of the month. Then he had gotten accepted to his fancy acting school and never showed his face anymore. You had tried to reach out but every time you did, he would dismiss you because “he didn’t have time” as “he had to rehearse for a play”. You had always offered to help him, and he would decline because he usually rehearsed with his school mates. For some unknown reason, he had even neglected to mention his plays, let alone invite you to them. After about a year of you trying to stay in contact you eventually gave up. The only thing that had remained was your mutual friend Zach. For some reason Joe had stayed in contact with him but not with you.
In the beginning, the fact that all of a sudden you weren’t good enough for him anymore had hurt you immensely, but with each passing year that hurt had turned into sadness which had morphed into anger and ultimately graduated into hatred. Zach would invite you out to chill at a park with the lads and lasses and you would always have a great time until Joe had shown up. As soon as you would spot him, you’d pack up your belongings and would leave with an excuse that “something had come up”. This had worked fine the first couple of times but after the fourth time, Zach had pulled you aside and demanded to know what was going on. You had explained that you and Joe had fallen out and that you didn’t want to see him anymore. You also had asked him to inform you if Joe would be attending so you could opt out in the future and to please never ask you about it ever again. You had left a confused Zach standing there as you stormed off, not noticing Joe’s longing stare, which had been set on you.
Over the years, you had seen Joe less and less. This had mostly been due to the fact that he had spent a lot of time abroad or in different parts of the country fulfilling his acting duties. The only time you would see, and largely avoid him, was at mutual friends’ birthday parties which had luckily taken place less than a handful of times a year. When your paths had crossed anyway, you would either look in a different direction, or if you had accidentally looked at each other you would send him the vilest glare you could muster.
The last time you had seen him in person was back in 2019 before the whole pandemic and his sudden rise to stardom. God, that had been the worst. His face had suddenly been all over the tabloids and various social media sites. You had even cancelled your Netflix subscription because you didn’t want his mug showing up in your suggestions.
And now here you were, stuck in a tiny room with him, literally and desperately trying to escape, not only for the game’s purpose, but also from him.
Whilst Joe was still grabbing at anything and everything, you finally found a key to a tiny padlock. You triumphally turned around and went straight for the padlock you had spotted earlier, which was attached to a small treasure chest. Inside that chest, you hoped to find the big key that would open the door to the next room. You squatted down and eagerly opened the chest just to be met with disappointment as it only contained a small piece of paper bearing yet another enigmatic riddle. With only five minutes left for you and Joe to escape, the daunting realisation set in that there wouldn’t be enough time to decipher the clue. Groaning you let your head hang down in defeat, when suddenly, the scrap of paper was ripped from your fingertips.
“Hey!”, you protested loudly. The abrupt movement of him taking the riddle from your hands made you lose your balance, and your bum ended up ungracefully plopping onto the floor.
“I’ve seen these symbols. They’re in the books!”, Joe exclaimed, disregarding your current predicament on the floor, not even bothering to help you up.
“It doesn’t matter, Joe. We’re out of time anyway.”, you explained in defeat whilst slowly pushing yourself up. “They will let us out in two minutes.”
Joe sneered and rolled his eyes at you.
“Yeah, and it’s entirely your fault that we’re out of time.”
“My fault?”, you sputtered in disbelief. How dare he?! MY FAULT?! That! Bitch!
“Yes.”, he replied with a finality that held nothing but malice. “It’s because you aren’t a team player. You’re a selfish little cunt.”
“What did you just call me?”, you asked Joe, clearly taken aback. Joe only gave you a dismissive glare and turned his back to you. You let out a shaky breath which resembled an angry huff you hadn’t even realized you had been holding in and stalked over to him. When you came toe to toe with him, you raised your hand and slapped him across the face. Stunned, Joe slightly recoiled in response to the sudden impact of your palm against his cheek. Fuming but satisfied, you pivoted and marched purposefully towards the emergency exit. With a deliberate pause, you turned around again to give him the finger before rapping your knuckles against the door.
“Hello?”, you shouted with urgency. “Can you please let me out? I don’t want to be in here anymore.”
You crossed your arms and leaned against the door frame, waiting for someone to open the door. As you glanced up at the timer that hung from the ceiling, its display confirmed that the time had officially run out. Your attention shifted over to Joe, whose face was redder than a tomato, amplifying the visibility of your handprint. He was waiting impatiently to be let out of the escape room’s main entrance. When a couple of minutes had passed and neither the emergency door nor the entrance door opened you started to panic a little.
Hammering your fist against the door you started yelling.
“HELLO?! TIME’S UP! LET US OUT!”
Nothing.
“HELLO?! IS ANYBODY OUT THERE?!!! LET US OUT!”
Still nothing.
Oh no. OH FUCK.
Oh shit. We’re stuck.
You were stuck in a tiny room with Joseph Quinn of all people, the man you despised the most.
Slowly, you let your body slide down the wall next to the door and buried your head in your hands. Your breathing became shallow and erratic, and your vision blurred. Joe, who was still shouting for the employees to let you two out, was blissfully unaware of your impending panic attack.
“This can’t be happening. This can’t be happening. This can’t be happening...”, you muttered breathlessly. Your fingers began to shake, and you unsuccessfully tried to choke back a sob.
When Joe heard it, he instantly turned around with the most annoyed look on his face.
“Are you seriously crying right now?”
“Shut up.”, you managed to gasp. Your breaths were coming in ragged bursts and each moment that passed seemed to steal more oxygen from your bloodstream, leaving you increasingly lightheaded. “I need to get out...before... bef-ore...”
It was now very hard to breathe, you couldn’t even form complete sentences anymore. Joe fortunately noticed the alarming shift in your demeanour and frowned.
“Hey...are you OK?”
You shook your head, your trembling fingers pointing to your chest as it rose and fell rapidly.
“Can’t... br-eathe.”, you choked out. As Joe realised what was happening, he immediately went into helping mode, taking quick steps towards you and dropping to his knees in front of you.
“OK. Come on. Look at me.”, he demanded quietly, and you slowly lifted your head, trying to focus on his face; it was a challenge through the tears that were uncontrollably flowing down your cheeks. You blinked rapidly, trying to get the tears out of your eyes. Once your sight had somewhat began to regain clarity, you noticed how close Joe’s face was to yours. His rich chocolatey orbs were staring right at you.
“Here you are...OK. Now breathe with me.”, he instructed, as he slowly breathed in through his nose and out again through his mouth. He did that with you until your breathing steadied.
“Thank you.”, you whispered, still hesitant to use your regular volume. You were genuinely amazed by how effortlessly he had managed to calm you down. His eyes radiated assurance, it was as if you could grasp the tranquillity they held, and you were suddenly able to breathe again. No one had ever had this effect on you. “Where did you learn that?”
“Learn what?”, he questioned, leaning back on his haunches and placing his hand flat on his thighs.
“The breathing technique.”, you replied, pushing yourself up a little to sit straight against the wall.
“Oh...uhm.”, he started, lifting one hand to the back of his head, scratching it lightly, “Well...you used to have panic attacks at school which I guided you through...I guess it was just muscle memory?”, the skin of his face suddenly held a faint hue of pink.
“Ah...”, you acknowledged. You both were still staring at each other. “Yeah...that must be it...thank you again.”
“No worries.”, he nodded, quickly averting his eyes as he pushed himself up into a standing position. “I think we’re stuck.”
“No shit, Sherlock.”, you muttered with a tired sigh, finally rubbing the tears from your eyes.
Joe didn’t respond to your comment but walked over to the opposite side of the room and sat down on floor.
---
After about fifteen minutes of you both trying to get whoever was out there’s attention while not speaking to and basically avoiding each other as best you could, you were the first to throw in the towel and decided to take matters in your own hands. You walked over to where you’d seen Joe put down the small piece of paper with the symbols and picked it up. You had seen some of the symbols too, they had been in the books on the shelf. You were able to find four out of the five symbols and their appointed numbers, which sure enough gave you the code to one of the padlocks, but you just couldn’t find the fifth symbol and it frustrated you to no end. Joe, who was moping in his corner, was staring at you the whole time and it wasn’t helping at all, it made you incredibly nervous.
After trying and failing for the umpteenth time at retracing your steps to find the missing symbol, you accepted your fate and gave up. You had to admit to yourself that you couldn’t do it without Joe, who had made no attempt to help you. So, you sat back down into what you decided was your spot. Leaning forward, you buried your head between your knees and let out the deepest sigh.
“I think they’re doing this on purpose.”, he finally spoke.
“Huh?”, you asked, lifting your head a little to look at him.
“Keeping us both locked in here.”, Joe elaborated. “It’s on purpose.”
“You think so?”, you asked defeated, “Why would they do that?”
“Dunno.”, he replied with a shrug, which you returned with a hard eyeroll.
“You think they’re doing this on purpose, but you don’t know why? Wow. Way to go Joseph. Your suspicions really contributed to finding a solution to this whole fucked up situation.”, you scoffed, and he gave you the finger in response.
“At least I’m trying to figure out what’s going on, unlike you who’s just sitting there and feeling sorry for yourself.”, he accused with a sharp edge to his voice.
“They locked us in here and aren’t letting us out! That’s what’s going on! I’m sure there are no ulterior motives behind it. They simply forgot about us.”, you rambled, and Joe shook his head.
“There’s CCTV in here. They have not forgotten about us, you idiot.”, he replied as if he were talking to a child. “It’s on fucking purpose.”
“Ugh. Please stop talking. You’re giving me a headache.”, you groaned and placed your hands over your ears, so you didn’t have to listen to his delusional words anymore.
In response he crossed his arms in front of his chest and glared daggers at you before he mopingly turned his back to you again.
---
Another 30 agonizing minutes crawled by, the deafening silence growing even more stifling, and they still hadn’t let Joe and you out of the room.
Boredom hit you like a freight train, so you tried to find different riddles to solve inside the room. After all, what else was there left to do? Joe, who had turned around once more when you had started making noise, was picking at his fingernails and began silently observing you roam around the room.
You were sitting on the floor, in the middle of the room, just about to complete a jigsaw puzzle when he suddenly spoke up from his designated corner.
“What happened?”
“Are you stupid?”, you questioned him, without looking up from your puzzle. “We’re obviously trapped in here...”
“No...”, he retorted whilst slowly standing up and making his way over to you. “What happened to us?”
You looked up at his towering form, eyebrow furrowed in curiosity. He sighed before he sat down opposite you and spoke again when you remained silent.
“Back then... after we graduated, what happened? You suddenly didn’t want to hang out with me anymore. Don’t think I didn’t notice.”, he stated, picking up a puzzle piece and placing it in its rightful position.
You scoffed and snorted at his statement. Was he fucking serious? You couldn’t believe the words he had just spoken.
“Are you fucking serious, Quinn?”, you seethed, your voice grew louder with each sentence, “I didn’t want to hang out with you anymore? Oh, that’s just fucking rich...YOU were the one who went off to your fancy little acting school and didn’t want to hang out anymore. I tried...oh and how I tried, to keep in touch with you. I offered to help you rehearse and you always declined. You didn’t even invite me to your plays!”
“...what? That’s not true.”, he tried to defend himself.
“Shut up! I’m not done yet.”, you snapped, holding up your hand to cut him off. Now it was your turn to glare daggers at him. “After a year of trying, I finally gave up. I told Zach not to invite me when you were around because I couldn’t stand seeing you. It hurt like hell at first because I didn’t understand why you would still want to always hang out with Zach, yet you acted like I meant nothing. I was so unbelievably furious. You hurt me so damn much, and yeah, I fucking hate you for that! I hate you! I HATE YOU!”
Angry tears were now cascading down your face and your body was visibly shaking. Joe, who was too stunned to speak, suddenly leaned forward, and pulled you into his arms, destroying the almost finished puzzle in the process of hugging you.
“Don’t touch me!”, you shrieked. “Let. Me. GOOOO!”, You tried to push him away, but he wouldn’t budge, only tightening his arms around you even more, holding you in place. You kept on squirming in his arms, trying to get out of his hold, yelling, shrieking, calling him all the names you could think of for what seemed like forever, but he still didn’t cave.
“Please.”, you eventually chocked out, your voice a defeated plea as you sobbed, tears streaming down your cheeks. “Please let go of me...it hurts...I hate youuuu.”
“Nuh-uh.”, Joe finally whispered into your ear, pulling you up a little. Hiccoughing, you let your head rest in the crook of his neck, feeling Joe’s word vibrate through your body, as he spoke again, this time in a normal volume.
“It’s true, I didn’t really hang out with you after I started drama school. But you have to understand, I was the new kid and I had to prove myself in order to be accepted by them. I had to rehearse with them, even though I would’ve loved to do it with you. But then you didn’t show up to my first real play and I got so disappointed and angry with you. I don’t know why you said that I didn’t invite you because I did. Zach and I had been out at Clapham Common skating when my mobile slipped from my pocket and got damaged. I had specifically asked him to forward the invitation to you, but now I see that he didn’t... that fucking dimwit, I’m gonna kill him.”
He took a deep breath before he continued, absentmindedly rubbing his hand up and down your back, and you allowed it. You didn’t have the strength to fight him anymore, so you let him.
“After I got my mobile back from the repair shop, I tried to contact you, but you had blocked my number. I even tried to message you via Facebook, but you had unfriended and blocked me there too which pissed me off big time. Stupid young me then decided that two could play that game, so I just started to ignore you even more than you ignored me. I had this plan, that you’d eventually give in and come back to me if I kept it going, but it backfired horribly. When Zach pulled me aside right after you’d left the park, once again just when I had arrived, and told me that you didn’t want to hang out with me anymore, it hit me hard. I realised I went too far, but I was young, full of anger, and stupid. I didn’t know what to do to fix things. So, I ended up doing what you did on those rare occasions we got to see each other and interact – either throwing insults or avoiding you altogether... what goes around, comes around, you know.”
Taking another deep breath, he moved his hand that had been rubbing your back to your hair and started massaging your scalp. You had long accepted that he wouldn’t let you out of his arms anytime soon, so you just listened to him and let him do what he needed to do.
“It was never my intention to make you hate me, you know.”, he was now back to whispering. “Knowing that you do hate me hurts a lot because...because...’cause I could never. Even after everything. Even after trying to and oh, how I tried. I just couldn’t. I...fuck. It’s the opposite, actually.”, he chuckled humourlessly.
This revelation suddenly sparked some left-over strength in you and leaned back, staring at him, mouth agape.
“The opposite?”
“Ugh. Yes. The opposite.”, he repeated.
“But the opposite of hate is love.”, you stated, mind totally blank.
“Yes.”
“You love me?”
“Yes, silly.”, he groaned, closing his eyes. “I’ve always loved you. At first it was strictly platonic, you know, being best friends and all...but when I went off to drama school, I noticed how much I missed you. I missed your hugs, I missed your smile, I missed being close to you. I even missed things we never even did together. Well, missed is the wrong word here, I longed for them. But you not wanting to be friends with me anymore put a spoke in my wheel and I just let it go.”
“You can’t love me!”, you sputtered astonished. “I... I hate you a-and you hate me.”
“Wrong. I just said, I tried to hate you, but I couldn’t. Because I LOVE YOU.”, he declared, tightening his grip on you once more.
“Joe. You called me a cunt mere hours ago.”, you argued, letting out a confused laugh, new tears forming in the corners of your eyes. You were frustrated with all the new information your overstimulated brain had just received. How could he love you when he treated you like shit? You knew that he had just explained it to you, but you couldn’t fathom what was happening. He had hated you and now he didn’t, and you had learned to hate him...or had you? You instantly started to doubt yourself. Was it really hate you felt for him the past ten years or was it more about the deep hurt, anger, and sadness that had consumed you when you lost your best friend – the person you’d hoped would become your boyfriend? Maybe...you weren’t sure. You just continued staring at him, with a blank face and reddened eyes. A thousand thoughts spinning in your head.
“...and I’m really sorry for that, because you are not a cunt...you’re far from being one.”, he apologised wholeheartedly, hand still gently stroking your hair. “I’m so very sorry...for everything. The way I treated you was beyond cruel. I was young and dumb. But mostly I was hurt because of your constant avoidance, and instead of being the bigger person and seeking you out to find the root cause of it all, I treated you like shit.”
You just kept staring at him, blinking slowly. A few stray tears escaped the inner corners of your eyes and Joe looked back at you expectantly. A couple of moments passed where neither of you said a thing. With each passing second the tension between you increased and Joe grew more nervous, his unease became almost palpable. He had just bared his soul to you and your lack of a reaction lead him to believe that this whole thing was a grave mistake. Panic started to etch onto his face, and he suddenly seemed so vulnerable. You could practically read his thoughts - You really, really must hate him - which made your own blank expression soften slightly in response, and you knew what you needed to do in order to dispel his thoughts.
“Joe...”, you started slowly. “I...thank you...uhm, for apologising. It really means a lot to me. I want to apologise too. God, this is so stupid.”, you paused, letting out a quivering breath because you started to get all choked up again. “We were so stupid. Why are we so stupid?”, you asked, mostly yourself as you shook your head once, twice, three times. Joe was sitting still, waiting for you to continue with bated breath.
“I’m sorry. For immediately thinking you hated me and didn’t want anything to do with me anymore. I’m sorry for being mean and treating you like shit. I'm sorry for not reaching out to you to talk about it...I was just so hurt and confused...I’m sorry.”, you were now full on crying again and Joe pulled you closer to his chest once more, muffling your speech. “...Also, I’m sorry I said I hated you because to be frank, I don’t...I was just so very angry with you and the whole situation. I don’t hate you, Joe...I actually love you too and I have for so many years.... fuck, this is just a huge fucking misunderstanding because two dumb, insecure teenagers didn’t know how to communicate properly. I’m so sorry.”
Suddenly, you felt something wet on the crown of your hair and you slowly looked up and saw silent tears dripping from the tip of Joe’s nose. It was now your turn to tighten your arms, which had snuck their way around his torso.
You returning his previous affection made him sob faintly and he slowly opened his mouth, his scared, big brown eyes set on yours.
“I missed you so, so much.”, he whispered, now suddenly afraid someone could listen in on your conversation.
“I missed you too, so so much.”, you replied equally as soft. “I missed your hugs, and your smell, and your stupid fucking grin… but most of all I missed your useless facts about random places in London.”
The last point made Joe chortle out loud.
“Shut up, you didn’t miss those, you hated them.”
“Yeah, I hated them...still do.”, you replied, letting out a tearful chuckle.
Both of you let out a simultaneous sigh, leading to another round of giggles. As the laughter subsided, you shook your head once more and finally looked up at him. His eyes held a foreign sparkle. Not foreign in the sense that you hadn’t seen it before, because you had, but it had never been directed at you. The sparkle paired with a broad grin on his lips made your cheeks grow hot and you tried to avert your gaze. Before you could turn your head, his hand had snuck from your back to your jaw and held it in place.
“Can I kiss you?”, he inquired softly, caressing your jaw with his thumb.
“Yes.”, you responded firmly.
His lips met yours in a needy, salt-stained kiss which you eagerly reciprocated. A soft moan escaped your lips, encouraging Joe to deepen the kiss further. When you both ran out of breath, you reluctantly pulled back, your foreheads meeting in an intimate pause. The remnants of your kiss lingered, leaving Joe’s and your lips tinted rosy red and slightly swollen, small smiles of happiness gracing your mouths.
Just as you were about to lean in for another kiss, the door to the escape room opened, causing both you and Joe to quickly turn your heads towards it.
An obviously very pleased Zach, accompanied by a blushing Iris, stood in the doorway, holding up a sign that read:
CONGRATS, YOU MADE (IT) OUT!
THE END

A normal Saturday night. That’s what your friends promised you when they showed up at your flat three hours ago with two bottles of wine and a glint in their eyes. You should’ve known, should’ve picked up on the fact they showed up ready to go out. Maybe it was blind optimism, thinking they wouldn’t force you out of your cocoon of misery.
Listen, you know they want what’s best for you, with things at work piling up and your stupid now ex boyfriend always texting you, you know you need this. One night off, one night of freedom, one night to say fuck you and just party. But fuck man you just wanted to be back on your couch, watching shitty reality tv, probably snacking on too many sweets to be healthy. Instead you are sitting at a new bar that your friend swore up and down would be chill vibes.
Liar.
People were everywhere. You had lost half of the group when you got here, Already a bottle and a half of wine in.
So here you are, waiting to grab a couple shots while your friend Chloe stands beside you flirting with anyone who will give her a moment because the best drinks are free drinks. Which she isn’t wrong, but you’d just gotten out of a four year relationship, flirting is a foreign language now and you weren’t about to embarrass yourself like that.
When the bartender finally came over to you, you quickly ordered four shots, if you were here to have fun you were having fun, quickly sliding your cash to the bartender you nudged Chloe so she’d take her two shots while you took yours. Honestly you wouldn’t hate this so much if it was just you and her and the friends she showed up at your house with, but as you were getting in your cab to come to the bar she informed you that they were meeting up with other people there. It was quick when you met up barely getting glances of some of the people, as you struggled to light a cigarette. It was fine though as long as Chloe was with you, you knew you could make it through the night.
Finally letting the burning of the alcohol subside you grab Chloe’s hand to go to the dance floor, the next hour passes in a flash of bodies and drinks. Stumbling, very gracefully, you yelled to your other friend, Shelly, that you were going outside, needing a smoke and a break from the music. Pushing through the bodies you made your way to the door, mumbling apologies as you went.
Finally you could breathe once you were outside, mind numb and limps tired you started searching for your smoke pack, you know you put it in your pocket after the one you had when you arrived. Quietly mumbling to yourself you finally gripped it your back pocket. Pulling it out you let out a breath of relaxation only to groan when you flipped the top and realized it was empty.
“Mother fucker, I knew I was forgetting something. Stupid wine.” You sighed leaning against the wall.
Then you saw him. Standing a couple metres away, smoking a cigarette, you recognized the outfit, white button up with loose light wash jeans. You swear he was with your group, or at least a part of the half you met up with. So with the energy you could muster you pushed yourself off the wall, wrapping your arms around yourself and silently hyping yourself up.
Not fully paying attention to what he was taking about you wandered over. you patted his shoulder like a friend who hasn’t seen him in a while would. Smiling as he cut his sentence short, turning to look at you, smoke half way up to his mouth, big brown eyes staring at you as you smiled back.
“Hello good sir,” You mock bow, slightly stumbling towards the wall.
Fuck I swear I’m smoother than this. You thought to yourself.
You look back up at him and smile again as he subtly checks you out, probably wondering why a random drunk girl had wandered up to him.
“So funny thing. Chloe and Shelly made me come out tonight because work is fucked and max non stop texting me is fucked so they decided that I needed to come out and have a good time but my smart self forgot to get smokes before,” you flash him the empty pack with a pout. “And I was wondering because you know them apparently if I could steal a smoke off you.” You ramble, barely noticing his empty hand coming to steady you at your waist as you looked back up at him.
He had a smirk and for a second you wondered if he was apart of the group because you swear you would’ve remembered him, with his beautiful eyes, curly hair, and slight facial hair. Must’ve been one of the guys at the back.
“Uh yeah yeah, sure love, here yah go.” He handed you the lit half smoked cigarette for you to take a drag off of.
Jumping with excitement to finally have a sweet hit of nicotine you grabbed it from his fingers, your warm skin slightly rubbing against his cold fingers. You mock bowed again then took a long drag before blowing it up between the three of you.
“Fuck I’m so rude, I’m Y/N, Chloe didn’t introduce us. Not surprised that girl knows everyone.” You slurred, sticking your hand out for him and his friend to shake.
A moment of realization hit him and his friend, looking at each other as you took another drag before offering it back to him.
You thought they were someone else.
“Nice to meet you love, I’m Jamie and this is Joseph,” his friend gestured to himself then to the man at your side.
Joseph.
You quickly looked over his friend as Joseph grabbed the smoke from your hands. Longish blonde hair, sharp features, beautiful blue eyes. Damn you gotta give Chloe more credit, she sure knows how to get pretty people to be her friends.
“How’s your night been going?” Joseph asks you, turning more towards you as you lean on the wall, his hand slowly leaving your waist. Quickly grabbing his cigarette pack and offering you a full one as you fish for your lighter in your other pocket. Thanking him you took it and quickly lit it up, taking a full pull before exhaling.
“You’re a fucking lifesaver,” you flick the smoke. “It’s going, my feet hurt, and I have done enough shots to probably kill a small horse, but hey, at least I still remember my name. But you Joseph I’m curious about, how’s your night?”
“Could say the same, though I’m nowhere near as drunk as I want to be, this sap here,” he pointed to Jamie, you followed his hand looking at the sole ring on his finger before looking at Jamie. “Wanted to call his girlfriend to check in on her.”
“Oh that’s so cute, fuck I wish my boyfriend did that. All he did was cheat on me during night outs,” You rambled, not noticing how the two men slightly winced at the harshness of your voice, taking a puff and continuing. “Anyways, that’s why I’m out tonight because fuck that guy, you guys wanna do a shot with me?” You spoke quickly before losing your confidence.
“I would, but speaking of my girlfriend she’s almost here to get me but you can steal this man for the night I’m sure he wouldn’t mind.” Jamie winks at you. You giggle slightly, turning more towards Joseph and putting your hand on his chest.
“What do ya say josi? Wanna do a shot? Join me on my level?” You flirt, well you hope you’re flirting, if Chloe knows these guys you know they are used to good flirting.
Joseph laughs to himself, rubbing his thumb on his lip before dropping his cigarette and squishing it out.
“Finish that up and I’m all yours.” He winked at you while pointing at your now half a cigarette.
“Hell yeah, hope you are ready to party.” You drunkenly finish the smoke as Joseph says goodbye to Jamie.
Waving at Jamie as he walks down the street to meet his girlfriend, Joseph pushes himself off the wall to stand in front of you. You giggle slightly before dropping your cigarette and stamping out as he did before. Wiggling your eyebrows you stand to your full height, still a few inches shorter than him.
“You ready for the night of your life?”
“Do you worst darling.” He sticks his hand out for you to start leading him inside.
Another hour passes, filled with Joseph catching up with shots as you tried to keep your buzz at the same level. You had filled the time with talking and getting to know him, he told you about his week that was full of work, never really telling you what he did for work though. You told him about you too, about your job that honestly at this you point you just wanted to quit just so you didn’t have to see your bosses face anymore. Giggling and smiling at each other as you slowly inched closer around the table you were sitting at as you talked. Honestly you were a little peeved Chloe kept this man hidden for so long with how well you were getting along.
Suddenly you felt a weight on your back and the smell of Chloe’s sweet perfume.
“Y/N! There you are. Shelly said you went for a smoke and then you never came back! I thought you died!” She slurred into your ear, hanging off you.
“I’m good clo, met one of your friends outside.” You gestured to Joseph, who looked a little panicked as he sipped on the water bottle he grabbed for the both of you.
Chloe looked over at him, sizing him up for second before turning to you.
“Y/N babe, I don’t know who this is,” Chloe giggled. “though you do have the same style as our friend Scott.” She directed at him.
Joseph paled as you shook your head stopping for a second.
Oh fuck. Oh fuck OH FUCK
That’s why he looked familiar, Chloe’s friend Scott, Scott who wore almost the exact same outfit. Scott who you had only met once. Your eyes widened before you full on started laughing.
“Oh my god. I am so stupid,” you got up and leaned over Joseph, wrapping your arms around his shoulders as his hand came to sit at where they crossed. Leaning down you kissed the side of his head. “You are such a sweetheart, letting me have a cigarette when you don’t even know me.”
“Oh thank god I thought you were going to be mad, I’m sorry love. Didn’t know how to tell you I didn’t know your friend here when you told me about her dragging you out.” He breathlessly said into your ear and you leaned on him. You looked a Chloe and gave her a quick look of ‘get out of here ma’am’ before leaning back up and patting Joseph’s shoulder.
“Well charmer, we can either pretend this didn’t happen, or we can go back out for a smoke and see where the night takes us.” You say to him as he turns in his chair.
“How about this. We go for a smoke,” he hands you his pack as he stands. “And, I take you out on a date next week to apologize for not telling you I don’t know you.”
“You’ve got yourself a deal josi.”
