Egg hatching story rough copy (small adharan ship invade California, gets raided by soldiers and loses like 20 something eggs) (Town that protag lives in is clled Blythe its on the cali-arizona border)(futuristic 1930’s setting where the gret depression happens 2004)“Look what i got at work hun!” Damn. Lucia groaned inwardly at her husbands voice as she straightened in her chair, her leg ached.. The dolt was always bringing home odd trinkets that while looking interesting or pleasing,were often dangerous. The loud tap-tap-tap of footsteps sounded at her door before being swung open. And a large milky colored orb was shoved into her view, Lucia fought the urge to glower at the exuberant man before her. “what did you bring home this time Todd?”“A jewel or somethin’, i think thats what ‘boss said anyways” He bounced the sphere in his palms. she pinched the bridge of her nose and tilted her head back, causing long auburn wisps to fall away from her face.This ‘jewel’ was clearly an egg of some sort.It looked like it was laid by a barn owl, if a bit large and transparent-looking.“ Todd where did you get this ‘jewel’?” He handed her the egg as he spoke “ well me n the boss were patrolling and found ‘nother Adharan wreck just inside Cali borders.Had all these white jewels inside of it“ Lucia mm-hmm’d as she absentmindedly prodding at the egg, must be adharan then. “I picked this one cuz it was the biggest,” she couldnt hear him outside of the observational monologue in her head.Todd fidgeted during the pause, “ jus’ thought id get a pretty thing for my pretty lady”. The taller woman snapped to attention in time to tell todd that he did a good job and whatnot, she liked todd of course but he was a bit scatterbrained when it came to random objects beyond the skyline.{timeskip mayhaps idk}The orb filled with white fire pulsated and squirmed, just itching at the opportunity to be released from its hazy prison.Lucia’s eyes, often glazed over with utter unconcern, were alive with a calculated mischief.in her boredom with house-wifery Lucia had chosen to incubate the spawn of her peoples greatest enemy,on Terra,in her house,on the shag carpet.It had to be a crime, a felony of unimaginable extent,that carpet was pretty expensive.But Lucia didn’t care. She was tired of the same dreaded, monotonous routine that she had been dutifully following like the good little housewife that she was. The good little wife that she had been.Lucia wanted to raise one to these insectoid beasts, just to see what chaos she could create. Spurred on by some unknown force,the egg burst open with a squelch. Lucia would have gagged had she cared.High pitched scraping sound greeted her. she grimaced as a fat grub rolled across the carpet onto hardwood.It wriggled and endulated,it looked mostly the same as the egg. just oblong and with a pair of snapping mandibles that clicked continously.Lucia studied the larvae curiously, she eyes flickered to the corkboad with pinned bugs and arthropods. The board had a section for hornets, brood included.Lucia smiled, she remembered the days when she would blowoff etteqiuette classes to hunt down hornet nests. She would become trancelike, she wouldnt destroy them like the other children, no,she would sit politely and just, watch.The uniformity mesmerized her, not a single wing nor antennae was out of line. Every single hornet in that hive knew their job and were content with it.Lucia jolted as the clicking, writhing larvae found its way to her chair and dragged its jaws against her wooden leg. Had she been another woman, she woud have probably screamed in abject horror, but lucia didnt see this gesture as a threat or danger. Her work in the field so many years ago had taught her that this grub was just hungry and was telling her so in the perfect, matter-of-fact way that insects always did.Lucia reached for the cute littleporcelain bowl beside her, a wedding gift from todd’s sister i think. She took a spoon and scooped up a viscous glob of protein powder and various ground up animal bits.“If its gonna grow big it will have to eat as such.” Lucia mumbled to no one in particular.\{timeskip part 2}{ perspective change???}Todd hummed a tune he didnt remember the words to as he changed out of his uniform.He was getting ready to go home after a long shift, lost in his thoughts of nothingness.“Man those adherans are more tenacious than a coon going after a crawdad!” it was his fellow recruits chattering.“Jared of course they are theyre invaders for a reason,and I know you didnt have that stupid accent an hour ago” Todd chuckled as Second-Liutenant McReady smacked Jared on the bck of his head lightly.“You jus cant stand fun ‘round here can ya Nic? You allergic to it or somethin’?” Jared griped in a voice similar to an italian mob-boss as they walked away,bickering becoming quieter but Jared’s over-the-top accents becoming sillier.Instead of catching up with Jared and Nic, Todd hurried to pack up so he could get home to his pregnant wife.{perspective change yet again-}“Yep, i uh, gave birth right at home” Lucia avoided eye contact with Todd, she had wanted to see how far she could go with this little experiment,and pretended to be pregnant while the egg went unhatched.She forgot to include her lack of lying ability as a variable in her calculations.Todd looked at her,then at the baby-sized larvae in his arms,then at her,back at the bug with no expression. Cold sweat beaded at Lucia’s brow, feeling very stupid she was tempted to come clean-The grub wiggled at Lucia in a manner that could only be described as laughing.damn bug.“well , uh, look I-” Her uncomfortable attempt at being honest was cut short as Todd’s face broke out into the single most excited smile on Terra,”He’s got your eyes!”“Wh- Uh yes ‘he’ sure does!” The thin lady quietly huffed a sigh of relief,“Why did you air quote “he”-” Todd began, Lucia quickly snatched up the larvae and wrapped it in a fluffy blanket.The bug spawn gurgled ungratefully.“Dont you have any manners? I just gave birth to a gru- child,i meant child” Todd quickly backed down sheepishly. “Ah uh go rest then ill take care of dinner” he was most certainly going to burn water, but it the thought that counts. After some time and once Lucia was certain her husband was clueless she allowed him to feed the squirming bug.”Soo.. Whats his name? Cuz i was thinkin’ something like Toddlleton or toddy,its like Teddy but i added-” She stuck out her index finger to shush him, she hadnt thought this far ahead, but she sure as hell wasnt going to name her larvae ‘Toddy’. “Uhm..” her eyes anded on her framed copy of Solstice Daily, dated on her birthday, “S-Sol?”{timeskip, Sol’s perspective)“Theres my boy!all ready for his first day of senior year! :D” Sol was yanked into a big bear hug from jis father, “clkclk chhk wubwok” Sol chittered in annoyance, Todd relented and put him down. Lucia glanced over her coffee mug at the two, mostly indisbelief, she had kept this ruse goin for 17 and a half years now. Sol was almost six feet tall now, half a foot taller than his ‘father’, large insectoid eyes protruded from his triangularly angled head, long antennae drooped downwards animatedly and he continued clicking. He had two sets of arms for the love of Moth Jesus. Lucia pondered her next lies.Sol trudged towards Blythe Highschool, anxiously jostling his backpack.He was just barely walking through a little forested shortcut when he heard the clicking and rustling from the bushes, {oh no, what if its an Adharan? Im too pretty to die!!} Sol panic clicked rapidly as the ruslting grew louder. Throwing up his arms in defense of his face, Sol awaited imminent demise.…Nothing happened, for two, maybe three seconds.{what.what are you doing in broad daylight?? Are you trying to get killed?} a new chittering noise interuppted Sol’s dramatic death scenario, a very irritated one at that. Sol lowered his arms just enough to peek at the newcomer, but, he couldnt see anything?? {Where are you? I cant see-} Sol gasped {Are you invisible? A ghost?!} A heavy and disgruntled sigh was heard before a chitinous black hand was waved in his face,causeing him to jump. {no im just short, cool it with the screeching beanstalk}

[nightwings & rainwings]

> rainwings couldve be the most dangerous tribe in existence, and some exiled rainwings have even come to embrace this, becoming well known- and feared- assassins and hitmen

> certain groups of rainwings have grown to hate their new queen, wishing they could go back to having a more laid-back one, and others have even considered teaming up with the nightwings to take her out

> nightwing powers become alot more common with more generations being born in the rainforest, and there has even been rumours of rain/night mindreaders and prophets

> with increasing exposure to the rainforest, nightwings have started losing their lava-resistant scales, along with their ‘venomous’ bite as they start hunting normally

> after admitting to her prophetic powers, Moonwatcher becomes to equivalent to a celebrity for being the first prophet, though there is some dragons who are jealous over her

> some nightwings groups have dedicated themselves to worshipping the moon for gracing them with their powers, while in groups of rainwings they have started worshipping the sun in a similar fashion

> rainwings can be seen somewhat commonly at inter-tribe festivals, usually as performers to earn gold as a side job, shifting their scales into hypnotizing patterns, similar to lightshows. some of them also enjoy ribbon dancing and changing their scales to mimic requested objects

> despite the other tribes original view of them, rainwings become somewhat popular due to their beauty, and some have even took up a job similar to jewel hive silkwings, sitting around modeling for a living

> most of the tribes are lowkey pretty scared of what Glory is doing to the rainwings, as rainwings used to be considered a unpredictable tribe back in Darkstalkers time

> rainwings can mimic almost any bird in the jungle, and some of the younger dragonets enjoy doing this to pull pranks on other dragons

> some nightwings honestly love rainwings mimicking abilities, and have even started singing together with them in performances

> Glory has considered destroying the volcano tunnel, but after considering the historic value, and also the nightwing parties to collect materials from it, decided to keep it, although alot of dragons hate going near it

> the rainwings who were tested on are pretty mad about this, and absolutely despise going near the tunnel, completely refusing to go near it whenever they are out collecting fruit and the like

> Mastermind was pretty much forced to fix the howler monkey’s screaming by any means necessary, as, fun fact, its not fun living in a forest where it constantly sounds like someones dying

> after the howler monkey’s stopped scaring everyone away, the rainwing and nightwing villages became pretty large trading posts, even attracting icewings to trade with nightwings

The Adventure Bible (The letters B. I. B. L. E. likely stand for Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth and includes Genesis tells how God created us. Next comes Exodus & Leviticus. Numbers & Deuteronomy tell great stories of wandering Israel. Joshua has stories of war & victory. Judges tells of problems in Jewish history. Next comes Ruth; you'll find in this book; the story of Boaz & the wife he took. Samuel contains books 1 & 2. Kings & Chronicles also do. In Ezra & Nehemiah the Jews come home. Esther's the story of a rise to the throne! Job's a story of hope & sadness, the Psalms are songs of praise & gladness, Proverbs gives us wise things to do, Ecclesiastes gives us much good advice too. Song of Songs/Solomon - a poem of love & devotion - is expressed in words of strong emotion, Isaiah & Jeremiah are books of prophecy, Lamentations laments a sad time in history, Ezekiel & Daniel take place in captivity. Hosea, Joel & Amos are the next three, Obadiah's a short little book, Jonah's a great story; why don't you take a look, Micah, Nahum & Habakkuk prophesy, then come Zephaniah & Haggai, Zechariah & Malachi are at the end, then a long time of silence God did send... Matthew & Mark along with Luke & John tell of the teachings of God's son. Acts reports on the apostles' work with the people of the early church. If you take a look at Romans; you'll find within how faith in Jesus can cover sin. next comes 1st & 2nd Corinthians followed by Galatians, Ephesians & Philippians. Colossians explains what faith can do. Thessalonians & Timothy have books 1 & 2. Titus tells us to carry on. The next in line's Philemon. Hebrews is a mystery book? We don't know who wrote it but take a good look. James tells what a Christian should do, followed by Peter books 1 & 2, then come John's letters 1, 2 & 3. Jude's next & as brief as can be. The Revelation of John is at the end & tells of a Savior who's coming again!)

Rubies and Sapphires: The Ruby Heart

Chapter 2: Spells and Swords

Beyond the red brick walls lay a formidable castle with towering spires, banners displayed the Clan Crest, a dragon coiled around a top hat, and Red was forced at sword point down the dirt path. The courtyard, with dead or dying plants in the neglected flowerbeds, was empty.

Were it not for the few scattered, top hat wearing people she saw looking at her curiously, warily from with the relative safety of the castle’s front gate, she would assume the place was abandoned. But that was far from the truth, the castle interior a maze of winding halls, within which the members of the infamous clan went about their business.

There was something about the place, an oppressive air that the inhabitants couldn’t shake that made her tail bristle. It set her on edge.

With Reginald in front of her and Wright behind her, sword threateningly pointed at her back, she was escorted through a pair of doors and into a large room.

“Your Majesty, we return with good news.” Reginald said smoothly, with added flourish as the trio halted before a round table.

The table was old, with a large, polished crystal inlaid in the middle of it, and several chairs placed evenly around the circumference. Seated on the black and gold throne at the head of the table, was a man wearing a black top hat with a crown in the shape of a dragon with its wings outspread.

“Good news eh?” he drawled, adjusting his red cape as he sneered at the sight of the Red. “Who’s she?”

“May I introduce The Cadmean Vixen, she assisted us in retrieving the jewels without issue.”

That caught the ruler’s attention, he swiftly rose from his seat, walking over as the two men presented the stolen gems.

“And let me guess? You think she should join the clan…”

“Her skills are indisputable-” Reginald said.

The clan ruler scoffed, snatching the ruby from him. He smirked as he inspected it. “Good job Reggie, and here I thought you were only good for scribe work.”

He eyed the ruby, a crooked grin splitting his face. “Yeah, we can do some real damage with this…”

“King Terrence?” Reginald asked and the other man snapped his gaze over to his subordinate.

The king gave Red a glance, looking her up and down. “You look human…”

“She’s a furhide.” Wright interjected.

“Tch, well Reggie, since you want her in the clan, she’s your responsibility,” Terrence ordered as he pocketed the ruby. “Take the Star Sapphire to the vault and give the furball a run-down of the joint... Oh and due to the shortage of rooms, she’ll be staying in the stables. I’m not wasting space on a stray.”

With his orders given, King Terrence turned on his heel and left the room with purpose, cape swishing behind him.

She heard Wright sheathe his sword.

“Well, it could have gone worse.” Reginald stated.

Wright snorted as Red glanced between the two of them. This, admittedly, was uncharted territory for her. She had spent how knows how long working by herself, living day-to-day, and relishing the few brief moments of having food readily available and a roof over her head, that suddenly being thrust into this group of magic users was daunting.

Wright handed the Star Sapphire over to Reginald. “You head to the vault, I’ll handle the girl.”

The stables were as empty as the courtyard. The building itself was sturdy despite the minor signs of disrepair she could see on her initial inspection. Red had been left to her own devices after Wright had given a no-nonsense, brief tour of the fortress. Nothing more than showing her where the mess hall and baths were located before leading her to the stables.

“Reginald will meet you in the mess hall tomorrow, don’t keep him waiting.” Wright had warned her.

The place felt like a ghost town. Like something stripped of all that grandeur and life, leaving it a hollowed-out husk while the people simply made do.

The best she could manage in the space she had been given was finding a few tattered blankets in a chest and making a rudimentary nest in the loft.

As the first light of dawn peaked through gaps in the roof, she laid down on her makeshift bed, wide awake and alert for any signs of danger. She filled the oppressive silence not with sound, but with thoughts.

Tales of the Toppat Clan, legends, reached even her during her travels. As much as she would like to hope that maybe she had finally found somewhere to call home, the reality of her situation was impossible to ignore.

Another hells damned life under the heel of another master. Bitterly, she mused that maybe that was what she should get for being a bleeding heart and sticking her nose in someone else’s business. She knew she was being dramatic of course, but it mattered little when she had nothing but her own thoughts for company for so long.

She knew it was going to be an uphill battle, but it wasn’t in her nature to just turn tail on people without reason and the Toppats had yet to do something to betray her trust.

So here she was, trying to concoct a scheme to turn her situation into something that would benefit everyone.

“We’re going to rob Galeforce blind!” Terrence announced to the Toppats that sat around the table. Red herself stood behind Reginald, watching the meeting unfold.

“See we got ourselves the Radiant Ruby,” the king said, showing off the jewel in question. “With this beauty we can ensnare a dragon and with a dragon on our side, no one will be able to stop us!” he grinned, an unnatural, twisted look on his face. “Just picture it, with a dragon at my beck and call we could go anywhere and steal anything. ‘Course, we gotta get one first.”

His words made her stomach drop, disgust rolled in her stomach, and she did her best to keep a straight face as he continued.

“Now, we all know dragons love gold, and we’ll need a small fortune to lure it into the trap. So, we’re going to sweep across the land, bust through every one of Gale’s strongholds, villages, you name it, and take as much as we can carry.”

A tense silence fell around the table.

“We’ll be in sight of our first target in an hour, pick your teammates and party up.” Terrence ordered and the room became a hive of activity as people got up from their seats and left to make their preparations.

She fell in step behind Reginald and Wright.

“We’re going to capture the dragon?” she asked.

“If Terrence wants us to, then that’s what we’ll do,” Reginald replied, resigned. “We have little say in the matter.”

“Once you pass your initiation, you take the oath, and The King casts the Binding Spell that makes you a permanent member of the clan,” Wright explained as they turned down a corridor. “Terrence rewrote it when he became king, an’ there’s nothin’ we can do about it.”

“Almost nothing…” Reginald said quietly. “If I just had the ruby…”

The vixen blinked. She could help him again, a few weeks to memorize the layout of the place, give off the impression that she was harmless, unimportant and build up a reputation in the clan…

Yes, she could steal the ruby in a month if she had the time and resources. She thought about leaving but judging from what little she’d put together from their first conversation, and the revelation of the binding spell, what little morality she had wouldn’t let her stand by and ignore this.

“I can get you the ruby.” She spoke up.

The two men looked back at her in surprise.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Terrence will make an example out of you if you so much as try and that is assuming, he doesn’t just kill you.” Reginald said.

“You’re not under the spell yet girl, why don’ you get off this rock an’ leave this to us?” Wright asked with raised eyebrow. “This is Toppat business.”

She stared back them defiantly. “Because I know what it’s like, you become so used to having no say in anything, to waiting for the next order, for the next chance to be useful, that it becomes normal, acceptable even… To the point that you don’t know what to do with yourself once you finally found freedom.”

“I spent five… six years at The Wall,” she divulged, powering through the well of emotions and hazy memories the admission bought forth. “They keep furhides as guards, treat them no better than actual dogs, I needed the coin and it seemed like a good offer at the time. I only got out six months ago.”

“And since then, you’ve made a name for yourself as a thief.” Reginald summarized, the shock morphing into understanding. He shared a look with Wright.

Something seemed to pass between them, a fire had been lit as the two men moved to walk beside her.

“We’ll meet in the stables tonight after the raid and discuss this further.” Reginald stated.

She nodded and joined them as they headed to the foundry to make their preparations.

Hours later, Red’s head was spinning, she struggled to fight against the light-headedness as the sounds of combat roared around her. She was in her fox form, hiding in a house. She’d been separated from the Toppats as soon as the fight began, the guards had been organized, a cohesive unit that had the slap-dash tactics of the mages outmatched in minutes. She had taken refuge in the shadows, slinking into houses and storing any valuables she could find in the magical pocket realm in her tail.

She’d been unlucky enough to watch as one of the Toppats, an archer with an enchanted bow, took the sharp end of a blade to the face. Red had been forced to hide in a house because the sight had made her fee like she was going to faint. As she waited for the dizziness to subside, something crashed through the back door.

She stumbled over to hide beneath a table as someone shambled into the room. Wright, unsteady on his feet, walked in with Reginald lobbing balls of fire from his hands behind him to cover their escape.

Wright sat down on the nearest available chair. Reginald locked the door behind him and waited with bated breath.

The fight raged on outside, but no guards appeared to have noticed the two men ducking into the house. Red crept out from her hiding spot, shifting into her human form, and adjusting her robes.

“What happened?” she asked cautiously as she approached them, the worst of her dizziness fading as she focused on the two Toppats.

Reginald glanced back at her, still on edge. “His defensive wards were broken by a shield bash.”

She made a noise in sympathy as she fished around her robes. She pulled out a potion bottle and handed it to Wright. Both men were surprised by the sight of the potion.

Reginald looked at the potion, then up at her. Wright grimaced as he accepted the offered potion, unscrewed the glass lid, and downed its contents.

“Thanks.” Wright grunted already looking more alert.

“If you need more, just ask,” Red said. “I can always make more.”

“You’re an alchemist?” Reginald asked.

“I picked up a few things at The Wall.” She replied.

Reginald was quiet for a moment. “We… could use your talents in the clan, we lost our healers some time ago...”

“We got a job to do, we’ll discuss this later.” Wright said as he got up.

The three of them avoided the frontlines, breaking into houses, stores and took whatever gold and valuables they could carry.

Something exploded.

The three of them moved to an open doorway and peered out to see what was going on. Maniacal laughter could b heard as the dust cleared and Terrence stepped out of the cloud of dust.

His grin was vicious as he held a golden staff. The staff had glowing black runes carved down its length and a black crystal set into the claw shaped top of the magical weapon. The Toppat King loosed a bolt of black energy from his weapon of choice towards the busiest part of the battlefield. Guards and Toppats alike were caught in the blast, Terrence only caring for his immediate victory, and Red heard Reginald suck in a breath in horror at it all.

“His own men are in there!” Red hissed. “The hells is he thinking?”

“We can always recruit more…” Wright quoted bitterly.

“We need to help them, everyone, with me.” Reginald commanded as he led the way.

As their ruler ran rampant, the small band retrieved as many of their wounded as they could, Red’s seemingly endless supply of potions and elixirs proving to be a boon to the clan and saving countless lives.
