The Socialist Party (PS) – a heavyweight party of government just a few years ago but now a rump of its former self – voted overnight to "suspend" participation in the NUPES alliance with hard-left France Unbowed (LFI), Greens and Communists.
Its board accused LFI of "constantly stoking conflict" within the alliance, after former presidential candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon and his leadership circle refused to call Hamas's bloody October 7 assault on Israel a "terrorist" attack.
The largest left-wing party in France's 577-seat parliament, with 74 MPs, LFI's hard-charging style of total opposition to Macron and sometimes controversial stunts and remarks has often left its allies grinding their teeth.
Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure "is breaking up NUPES" over "a personal issue with me about Israel (and) Palestine," Melenchon wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday morning in a message that later appeared to have been deleted.
Faure had earlier told Socialist leaders that Melenchon "had been a unifying force, but today he has become an obstacle", calling for "radical change in the way we think about uniting" the left.
Yannick Jadot, former Greens presidential candidate, said that "we have to suspend our ties with LFI so long as they haven't strongly clarified their basic values".
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Tuesday LFI lawmaker Daniele Obono should face a criminal investigation on suspicion of justifying terrorism after she described Hamas as a "resistance" movement.
NUPES was formed last year after Macron failed to secure a majority in parliament despite being re-elected to the presidency.
But tensions quickly became apparent, including over an admission of domestic violence by a close Melenchon supporter, strategy to oppose the government's widely-resented pension reforms, the war in Ukraine and this summer's riots.
The Communist Party already had one foot out of the door, voting a resolution Sunday that said NUPES was at an "impasse" and calling for a "new type of union" on the left.
Some voices within the PS and Greens have sought to keep the alliance alive, echoing arguments from LFI that the left has little chance of success if it does not stand together.

La sinistra in Francia e in Colombia trionfa grazie a una politica di totale rottura con le forze liberali e neoliberiste, con le riforme "strutturali", di opposizione alla comunità europea, alla NATO, agli USA e alle sanzioni contro la Russia in favore dei diritti sociali dei lavoratori, della sovranità e dell'indipendenza.
La sinistra in Italia invece fa come al solito dei compromessi con tali forze a scopo di contrastare l'avanzata della destra, che poi subisce batoste.

Le programme de la NUPES reste séduisant, bien que teinté de nostalgie, pour des classes populaires.
Jean Luc Mélenchon incarne l'idée de justice un peu revancharde, presque vengeresse ce qui n'est effectivement pas sans risque.
L'idée de progrès devrait être portée par les partis issus de la tradition de gauche à savoir les socialo-communistes dont on ne peut pour le salut de cette gauche de l'union que souhaiter une certaine recovery !
La radicalité, comme au États-Unis, de façon différente, va façonner les futures victoires dans une société clivée, polarisée par les partis soi-disant modérés, tels Ensemble ou la social démocratie qui sur un fond de politiquement correct ne cultivent qu'une forme d'hypocrisie qui finit par lasser l'électorat, populaire notamment.
La victoire ne se gagnera plus au centre mais aux extrémités du champ, du spectre politique national.
La justice et le progrès dit universaliste reste profondément ancré à gauche...

France's Macron loses absolute majority in legislative elections
Paris (The Times Groupe)- French President Emmanuel Macron suffered a major setback on Sunday as his political coalition failed to win an absolute majority in the legislative elections, putting the majority at risk of forming alliances with other parties.
According to multiple exit polls, Macron’s Ensemble (Together) alliance won the second round but fell short of the 289 seats needed to form a majority in parliament.
Polling firm Elabe estimates Macron’s camp will win between 205 and 235 seats in the National Assembly, while France 24 news predicts 224 seats.
Previously, former President Francois Mitterrand found himself in a similar situation in 1998, winning fewer legislative seats.
In a BFMTV news report, former government spokesperson and minister of public accounts Gabriel Attal summarized the results as “far from what we hoped for.”
As a result of the low numbers, Macron is now forced to assemble a majority by forming an alliance with other parties, ensuring that his government’s second-term agenda will continue with a parliamentary majority.
Most voters wanted a left-leaning government and a left-wing prime minister.
NUPES (New Ecological and Social Popular Union), led by Jean-Luc Melenchon, is expected to win between 149 and 190 seats against Macron’s coalition.
BFMTV reported that Melenchon, who came in third during the presidential finals, said: “We have achieved our political objective … to bring down the arrogant one who had twisted the arm of the whole country.”
Marine Le Pen‘s National Rally is expected to win 75 to 95 seats, a huge increase from the eight seats it currently holds in the national assembly.
The report noted that she was pleased with the historic result of her party’s candidates forming the largest group of lawmakers in parliament since the party was founded in the 1970s.
Approximately 60-70 seats are expected to be won by Les Republicains, a socialist party that did poorly in the recently concluded presidential elections.
