I really really fucking loved Mentopolis and its cast, and its plot and everything. And I thought this is it, this is the best d20. But honestly same with Burrows End. Like the cast is great, Jasper William Cartwright?! I am so fangirling. And the stoats and their families??? Amazing. I just think d20 is getting better and better.

do you ever give yourself ideas that seem like they shouldn't take much time in execution and then end up taking up way too much time?

anyway we're back with the first real entry for thisisnotthenerd's d20 stats of 2024. this time we're talking:

cast appearances by episode count

season count is one thing; there's only 21 of those so far. by contrast, we've had 222 episodes of d20 as of 1/16/2024. by may 2024 we'll have finished fhjy and hit 241.

by the current count, the intrepid heroes' full seasons account for 128 episodes of the total 222, or around 57.6% of the total episode count. if you add the fantasy high oneshots, it bumps up to 59.4%, and if you consider that we're adding 20 to the count with fhjy, by may 2024, intrepid heroes episodes will make up 62.6% of the dimension 20 catalog.

anyway here's the cast list:

the uncontested winner is brennan lee mulligan with 211/222 episodes. 95% attendance. the only times he hasn't been there are: the 4 episodes of shriek week, the 6 episodes of coffin run, and the gencon mismag oneshot.

in second place is lou wilson, with 151/222 episodes. this is every intrepid heroes season (128/222), plus 3 sidequests (4+10+6) and 3 oneshots.

in third, sweeping her way with the most recent season, is siobhan thompson with 147/222, after the ih seasons, 3 oneshots and 2 sidequests (6+10)

in fourth, we have ally beardsley with 144/222, after the ih seasons, 2 oneshots, and 2 sidequests (10+4)

Cal Sends 10 To NCAA Final

Bears Post Best NCAA Championships Score In Modern Program History

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The momentum that the California men's gymnastics team built throughout the 2024 season came to a head at just the right time, as it posted its best score at the NCAA Championships in the modern scoring era on Friday. The Golden Bears – faced with an intense environment and raucous crowd at Ohio State's Covelli Center –finished Session I of the NCAA Qualifier with a 407.158, their third best overall on the modern program list and their fourth 400-plus total of the season. Cal finished fourth, placing ahead of Navy (396.290) and Greenville (389.157) but behind Stanford (417.389), Nebraska (413.123) and Illinois (410.461), the latter three of whom qualified for Saturday's team final. Despite not advancing as a team, the Bears will have a heavy contingent at the Final after qualifying 10 men, including all three of their all-arounders, to mark a new program best since 2015. Cal started off the day on pommel horse – their most consistent event of the year – and posted the sixth-highest score in modern program history (66.998), which was keyed by senior Aidan Li, who broke his own program record with a 14.800. It was the second-best score of the session and earned him a berth to Saturday's final. The Bears then moved on to rings, bookending their lineup with qualifying scores from freshman Jaxon Mitchell (13.633) and senior Chris Scales (13.900); the former was a new personal best for the rookie, which helped Cal post its 10th-highest rings score on the modern program list at 67.332.

A monster vault rotation followed for the Blue & Gold, which posted its best score since 2020 with a 71.564 that ranked second on the program list. Sixth-year senior Darren Wong posted a season-high 14.233, followed by a 14.033 by all-arounder Theodor Roald Gadderud and a huge PR of 13.966 from fellow all-arounder Tyler Shimizu. It was sophomore Khalen Currey who earned Cal's top score on the event, sticking a 14.766 that ended the session as the field's top score, qualified him to the final and moved him up to third in modern program history. Junior Jasper Smith-Gordon then rounded out the lineup with a qualifying 14.566. Lastly, Cal's third all-arounder, senior Noah Newfeld, closed out the third rotation with a large PR of his own, a 14.000. Newfeld's momentum carried over onto parallel bars, where he stuck his dismount to cap off a 14.100 routine and top the lineup; Wong, meanwhile, posted a qualifying score of 13.800, helped the Bears to a total score of 68.566, their fourth consecutive program top 10 (No. 5). The team followed his lead with three sticks on high bar, courtesy of Mitchell (12.966), Wong (13.833), and senior Collin Cunane (13.200), the latter two of whom advanced to the final. Cal closed out the meet on floor, led by Curry's qualifying 13.933 and Shimizu's 13.900.

Between Lines is a Poetic Thoughtful Animated Short by Sarah Beth Morgan

Between Lines is an animated short film created entirely by an all-women team, directed by the talented Sarah Beth Morgan. The story is about the scars created by bullying in high school and lifelong recovery of these memories. Puberty, growing up, and the discovery of self are traumatic enough to process. However when school dynamics and bullies added to the equation, teenage years might become a burden. Maybe because we saw many coming of age stories in feature films focusing on the troubles of growing up, adjusting to problems, dealing with uncertainties. There is no denying that bullying creates deep scar on people and they spend so much time on themselves to recover past traumas. The narrative in Between Lines follows a young woman's journey as she navigates isolation, exclusion and anxiety. Out of the trauma, blooms a sense of healing and connection. There is no single definitive way to make your peace with your past but either way the happiness and relief comes within.

Sarah Beth Morgan, a director and illustrator currently based in Cleveland, OH, United States, grew up in Saudi Arabia. She attended the Savannah College of Art and Design and had early career experiences at Scholar and Oddfellows in LA and Portland. Currently, Morgan works from her own studio in Cleveland. And as a personal impression, Morgan's work feels sincere, down-to-earth and approachable to manies. Her animations and illustrations are neat, humble and taking you to a polished, clean environment that could trigger a positive emotions instantly.

Between lines successfully completed its festival stint by getting recognition and awards from many organizations; including Brooklyn Film Festival – Audience Award for Animation, Pictoplasma Berlin – Official Selection, SCAD Savannah Film Festival – Official Selection for Global Shorts Forum. Faye Wong: 'Words often fail me when I talk' (1995)

The singer, who performs here tonight, says she expresses herself better through music.

The 26-year-old Hong Kong based star has become the fastest rising pop phenomenon in the Chinese music industry.

Tonight and tomorrow, Singaporeans will be able to catch Faye Wong's first concerts here at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

With brisk sales for tickets to Wong's two-day concert being reported by Jasper Production, it is ironic that the Beijing-born singer, who has won over most of the region and all of Hong Kong with her silky voice and seamless, emotive singing, once claimed she did not have the confidence of peers like Anita Mui and Sally Yeh to stage a concert of her own.

And yet, her debut in Singapore follows a series of sell-out concerts in Hong Kong, which the organizer had to extend from the planned 10 to 15, and later to 18.

Among the almost 200,000 people who caught her show in the British territory, were peers such as singers Alan Tam, Andy Lau, Kenny Bee, Lau Sung Yan, and other star celebrities.

But Faye Wong who?

For those not yet familiar with the singer whom industry pundits are touting as the next Sally Yeh, the 26-year-old Hong Kong-based star has become the fastest rising pop phenomenon in the Chinese music industry. All in a mere five years.

Today, she is a household name in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Malaysia and Singapore. Mention "Faye" and images of a doll-like face framed by outrageous wigs come to mind.

Though born and bred in Beijing, Wong's secret is that unlike most of her peers, she is not your typical Chinese pop singer. She has manged to gather a large following among the young, old and even the English-educated Chinese.

Part of her uniqueness is that while Wong admits to drawing inspiration from Western singers such as The Cranberries, Sinead O'Connor, Whitney Houston, and Cocteau Twins, the more popular she gets, the more individualistic and alternative the singer becomes.

Her unconventional dressing and nonchalant attitude often draw extreme reactions from fans - you either love it or hate it.

Besides wigs, she has appeared in see-through outfits on variety shows and clothes worn inside out à la Madonna.

At the 93.3 FM Hit Awards presentation at the Singapore Indoor Stadium last September, she arrived in a pair of white flip-flops.

On a phone interview with Life! from Hong Kong, where Wong was recording, her public relations officer quoted the star as saying: "I do not really give much thought to how I mix and match my clothes. I dress according to my moods. It is not a publicity ploy on my part."

Yet her avant-garde image has certainly spawned copy cats from stars like Sammi Cheng to Shirley Kwan, to even Tony Leung Chiu Wai.

This is a far cry from when she was just an unknown singer dressed in tacky shirts and jackets, until she took a one-year hiatus in New York three years ago, and came back a totally different woman.

Confidence, character, coolness - that just about sums up Faye Wong, especially the latter quality which is a sore point with the Chinese press. Her answers to questions are often short and curt.

Most of the time, Wong would have you believe that she would rather open her mouth to sing than to talk.

But when asked about her cold and arrogant attitude, the singer says that she freezes up every time when faced with unfamiliar people and places.

"I'm better at communicating through my songs than in public speaking," she once told a Hong Kong magazine. "Words often fail me when I talk."

But no matter, she speaks her own mind and her care-less attitude is exactly what keeps her followers intrigued, and radio stations giving her recent hits, such as 'I Am Willing' and 'Sky' frequent airplay.

These songs will be heard once again tonight and tomorrow live in a show that Wong has promised over the phone will be the same format as her Hong Kong shows.

Translated, this means you can expect great singing, but do not expect her to make many costume changes or small talk.

Even her boyfriend, China rocker Dou Wei, who guest stars in the concerts, will provide just music accompaniment. In Hong Kong, he played the flute.

As the star speaks her mind: "It is not a wild carnival, but a music show."

surprised this wasn't hiding in the spreadsheet before but here goes.

seating chart by player + d20's gender splits

this one came mostly from analysis of old data--instead on the cast appearances chart, here's where everyone sat during their full seasons (oneshots are not counted here to reduce their impact as outliers)

as you'll notice, the data is repeated for the intrepid heroes sequel seasons because they were not made at the same time and this allows me to standardize and check how many people have sat in each seat more easily. also, it would mean i'd have to count everyone for each seat once, and i'm not planning on doing that right now. anyways.

for my splits:

first off, disclaimer that gender is a societal construct and that you can do whatever you want with it so long as you don't harm others. this list uses the pronouns indicated by the cast members. this list goes by the cast members' current gender--retroactively effective. if they came out after the season aired, they're still listed with their gender at the time of posting (Jan-Feb 2024).

for the sake of simplicity and not making separate categories for every nb cast member my categories are female (she/her pronouns), male (he/him), and nonbinary/gnc (they/them, other combinations of pronouns), which encompasses more complex combinations. yes the drag queens are split up because it's based on their pronouns as indicated. not everyone in the gnc group uses the same pronouns, so nonbinary/gnc is in use as an umbrella term.

so without further ado:

overall gender statistics

out of 48 cast members of dimension 20, there were 20 in the she/her category, 21 in the he/him category, and 7 in the nonbinary pronouns category

in other words the ratio of cast members is 41.6% female, 43.75% male, and 14.58% nonbinary/other genders

the main cast i.e. the intrepid heroes + brennan is a little less even, since brennan shifts the group toward a male bias (4/7, vs 2/7 female and 1/7 nonbinary)

so a pretty even split wrt gender and pronoun usage overall. some seasons differ in composition, but generally there's a pretty even split (female/male/gender non-conforming) with the GM tipping the balance.

gender stats by season

all of the intrepid heroes seasons (fantasy high, the unsleeping city, fantasy high sophomore year, a crown of candy, the unsleeping city chapter ii, a stasrtruck odyssey, neverafter, fantasy high junior year) are 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]

escape from the bloodkeep: same breakdown as the intrepid heroes seasons: 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]

tiny heist: a stronger majority this time since the mcelboys and their dad are there: 71.4% male, 28.5% female [5, 2]

pirates of leviathan: similar to ih breakdown; 57.1% male, 42.8% female [4, 3]

mice & murder: maintains the intrepid heroes split of 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1], with ally holding the last category.

misfits & magic: with only 5 people there's an almost even split; 40% female, 40% male, 20% gnc [2, 2, 1]

the seven: our season of ladies; 71.4% female, 14.2% nonbinary, 14.2% male [5, 1, 1]

shriek week: another almost even season; 40% female, 40% gnc, 20% male [2, 2, 1]

coffin run: another 5-person season; 40% female, 40% male, 20% gnc [2, 2, 1]

a court of fey and flowers: follows the ih split; 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]

the ravening war: 6 person season, so we're looking at 66.6% male, 33.3% female [4, 2]

dungeons and drag queens: this season is a little tricky since the players are simultaneous performing in drag, but using their listed pronouns we get the general split; 40% female, 40% gnc, 20% male [2, 2, 1]

mentopolis: also follows the intrepid heroes split: 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]

burrow's end: the intrepid heroes split in the opposite direction; 57.1% female, 28.5% male, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]

for our 7 person seasons, the most common split is the intrepid heroes split, of 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]. This pattern goes for 12/21 seasons of dimension 20. otherwise we tend to lean to one direction or another.

for the 5 person seasons, there's a pattern of a 2, 2, 1 split, but it's evenly split between [f, m, gnc] and [f, gnc, m].

gender splits in the seating chart

for the seating chart, it's a little different. there's two ways of tallying this up; by season or by cast member. the critical difference being that the latter does not allow repeats (of the intrepid heroes generally but also other returning cast) while the former does. i suppose the other way of stating it would be that we can count it up by occurrence or by total number.

since i don't feel like calculating percentages for this set, they will be displayed as ratios, like so: [F:M:NB]. keep in mind that some seats are not used for all seasons, so the numbers that the ratios add up to will differ.

L1: by occurrence, L1 has a 9:9:3 ratio with repeats, and 7:6:3 by total number of cast, so ever so slightly female-biased

L2: by occurrence, L2 has a 7:8:1 ratio with repeats, and 5:6:1 by total number of cast, so ever so slightly male-biased

L3: by occurrence, L3 has a 11:8:2 ratio with repeats, and 8:5:2 by total number of cast, so strongly female-biased

R3: by occurrence, R3 has a 9:9:3 ratio with repeats, and 4:6:3 by total number of cast, so male-biased. the difference in total number comes from the fact that siobhan, aabria, and lily all sit in R3 on multiple occasions

R2: by occurrence, R2 has a 2:9:6 ratio with repeats, and 2:7:2 by total number of cast, so male-biased with a strong nb/gnc presence. the drop comes from ally and erika both sitting there multiple times

R1: by occurrence, R1 has a 6:11:4 ratio with repeats, and 6:8:3 by total number of cast, so strongly male-biased. as you can probably guess, the difference comes from murph sitting in his favorite seat.

GM: by occurrence, we're looking at a 4:16:1 ratio, but a 2:2:1 by total number. if you account for the fact that brennan, the in-house gm, has been in the hot seat for 15 seasons, this makes more sense.
