Alright, due to popular request, I bring you the break down of the Taiwan Disease Personifications. Also, just so y’all know, the official explanations for the designs are not easy to find, so a lot of this is just from what I notice and what I know about the diseases
To start off, we have everyone’s favorite disease: COVID-19
So, this is one of the designs where I could actually find the artist explanation, so I will be including that information plus a couple things I noticed and how I think it fits the disease. So let’s start with to crown. The reason for the inclusion of the crown is the reflect the name coronavirus, corona being the Latin word for crown. The face is partially obscured because of COVID’s tendency to hide itself. The bean bag chair that they are sitting on has many protrusions signifying the spike proteins. The different digital devices represent how the world went virtual during the pandemic and the news channels behind them represent the media’s freak out when COVID was at its height. The floor has an outline of the world because everywhere was affected by the pandemic. Also, if you look closely, they are wearing little Covid earrings.
Next up, we got Zika:
I could not find an official artist statement for this design, so take my explanation with a grain of salt. So first off the red waist band reminds me of the red stripe that goes down the abdomen of the mosquito species that spreads Zika after it has fed. Also, the white markings on the black are also a characteristic of this species of mosquito. In fact, the design is the stripes on the chest look like the markings these mosquitoes have on their back. She presents female because it’s the female mosquitoes that bite and spread diseases. Her sleeves look like mosquito wings once again a reference to mosquitoes being the primary vectors of Zika. The area behind her has palm fronds to represent that Zika is a disease typically found in tropical climates.
Next up we have: Hansen’s Disease (aka Leprosy)
This is one where I could find the artist statement due to it being a pretty recent one, however, I will say that at least the translation was a bit lacking in describing the reasoning of every detail. She is a mask maker because leprosy changes how people perceive those who are infected but it is something that can easily be removed with modern antibiotics. She has different accessories like the lion and crocodile headpiece that implicate the divine involvement because leprosy has been historically thought to be a punishment of the gods. The scales on her arm look like an allusion to the scaling pattern scars that those with leprosy would develop.
Next up: Rubella
After a lot of digging I found the official profile for this design but it didn’t really explain the design choices so we are going to do more analysis on my end. So the pomegranate and the red dots represent the red rashes that come with rubella infections. The glasses I assume are to show how Rubella can lead to Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) which can occur in children if their mother had rubella while pregnant. One of the symptoms that comes with CRS is cataracts.
Next up: the plague
I found the explanation on this and it just confirmed my own suspicions for certain design choices. So her design is very focused on death and mysticism because of how the Black Plague led to a lot of cultural focus on these two ideas. Behind her are old coins because of the economic impact the plague had on the civilizations of its time. The references to death are the skeletal pattern on her dress, and the scythe behind her and on her belt. The references to mysticism include the tarot cards she is holding and the crosses on her hat. On the tarot cards are designs referencing the three different forms the plague takes (bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic) as well as a posey which was used to try to ward of the plague in old times. On her hat is also a collection of plague doctor masks which is pretty self explanatory as to how that connects.
Next up: Ebola
I couldn’t find the official explanation for this disease, so this is mostly speculation based on my analysis. Her outfit is red because of the hemorrhaging that comes with the disease. Specifically he lips are red because one of the more unique characteristics of Ebola is hiccuping up blood. The accessories seem to be inspired by central and western african traditional jewelry. There appear to be tribal masks on the necklace, I am not well versed in African art unfortunately, so any deeper meaning of these accessories are unfortunately lost on me. There are bats on the headdress because of bats being the natural host of Ebola. Her design is rather demonic because Ebola was so terrible for the areas affected, that people thought it could be caused be some great evil. The skulls are because of the extremely high death rate that comes with ebola. The leaves and fruits shown come from the African jungles which is typically where Ebola outbreaks start.
Next up: Novel Influenza A Virus Infections
I actually found the artist explanation for this design! As a disease closely associated with birds, there are many elements linked to birds. There are many bird shadows, the hair that looks like feathers, and the beak shaped mask, feathers on his tie and a feather tattoo on right arm, and the “H-N” pin (H and N proteins of the influenza virus).
Next up: Dengue Fever
Another one with an artist statement! Since only female mosquitoes bite, the character is set as a female. Her dark red lips represent mosquito’s instinct to bite, and she is holding a poisonous thornapple flower. She has mosquito wings tattooed on her back and thornapple flower tattooed on her arm. I have spent a long time looking into how the thornapple flower relates to dengue, but I haven’t had a lot of luck. From what I have seen is that the roots, seeds, and leaves are used in some traditional medicines, including treatments for malaria, but I have not had luck finding how it is connected to Dengue specifically.
Next up: Japanese Encephalitis
I found the artist statement for this disease as well. The disease is visualized into three characters that form a pop group, with their names reflecting the 3 main Culex mosquito species that spread Japanese encephalitis in Taiwan, which are Culex tritaeniorhynchus (Three), Culex annulus (Ring), and Culex fuscocephala (Shiro). They wear black and white, like the colors of the Culex mosquitoes. Red accessories represent their love for blood. I don’t have much to add outside of the artist explanation.
Last one for now is: Rabies
I found the explanation for this one, but it is not descriptive at all, so I am going to be going into every detail because this is Rabies. The spikes on the jacket and pant legs represent the protein spikes rabies uses to infect nerves. The blue jacket and gloves are representing water as one of the unique characteristics of rabies is hydrophobia (physical repulsion to water). The claw marks on the shirt show the animalistic tendencies the virus brings out. The violin players in the animal mask show how the virus can hide in these animals. The personification of rabies is holding a conductor’s wand showing how rabies controls those who are infected. The teeth necklace shows how it spreads through bites and they are standing on the brain because that is what rabies infects. He has a chain with mammal skulls once again tying back to rabies being a fatal mammalian disease. The belt buckle has a bone on it as bone are associated with bones and rabies is associated with dogs.

The last time I got that many vaccines was when I was 15. I had a 2 1/2 week trip to Italy and then two days after that I was going to rural Argentina for a week (I honestly did not know what day it was when I finally got home). Got Yellow Fever, MMR booster, Tetanus and when the doctor found out I was going to Venice he said "Let's do Hep B just in case you fall into a canal" I was like (*o*) My arms were sore for days.
yesssss. today i got: tetanus booster, hep b booster, typhoid booster, shot #1 japanese encephalitis, and yellow fever, i gotta go back for shot #2 of my japanese encephalitis. also i got my oral malaria medication too!

JE disease has symptoms of headache, fever, vomiting, disorientation, or even coma. Although most people don’t show any symptom but still it can be fatal if ignored. Since there is vaccine available for this disease, so better get vaccinated and stay prevented from the fatal disease. It is a viral infection which attacks on brain cells and spreads via mosquito bite. This virus is found in animals like pig and birds, so when mosquito bite pig and then bites human, that leads to virus transmission into humans causing JE. Yet hannibal knows Will and knows he will come back eventually.

Today I changed the wallpaper on my PC.

Nakahara Chuuya poetry
I know Asagiri's characters aren't the real person named, but it's useful to know the history and writings he's working with as a base. I'm reading through the volume of Nakahara's translated poetry, and the man was an utter trainwreck. The original "long haired, wears black, sleeps most of the day, wanders at night, drinks early and often and gets in fights" poet of Japanese literature. Who died at 30 of tubercular encephalitis, after the two of his children died of the same. [There's lots more, but I'll let y'all read up on him] I wasn't wrong when I did this for him:

Favourite dinosaur/prehistoric animal?
I love a lot of them, especially now that we have such a greater understanding of what they looked like. Floofy dinos are just extra excellent. But I think I'll have to crown Spinosaurus. It's a bit of a meme dinosaur by now. Every discovery changes our perception of what it looked like, and people still debate if it was aquatic or not. (I'm team aquatic all the way) I mean look at it. It's fucking iconic.
I once started a short story set in a future in which humans had long since reengineered some dinosaurs, and a pirate crew had a raft-style boat that was powered by a Spinosaurus. They'd pierced grommets in the sail to clip ropes to her back. They also had pet Troodons on the crew. Sadly I lost steam and inspiration and never went anywhere with the story. I still adore Spinosaurus.
Dead historical person that you'd like to resurrect for a chat or a chance to yell at them?
If I could just indulge myself, Francois Renee de Chateaubriand. Absolutely crazy guy. Lived through the French revolution, Napoleon, went to the Americas, wrote early romantic works, mostly known for his autobiography memoirs from beyond the grave. He's truly a blorbo from my history. Look at this :
“A moral character is attached to autumnal scenes; the leaves falling like our years, the flowers fading like our hours, the clouds fleeting like our illusions, the light diminishing like our intelligence, the sun growing colder like our affections, the rivers becoming frozen like our lives—all bear secret relations to our destinies.”
BUT if I had a perfect translator and could quizz to my heart's content, and had actual intentions of being useful, I'd talk to a Gaulois. Probably Vercingetorix or an earlier leader from Celtic France.
We know SO little about these people. They're my ancestors, and we have almost no knowledge of their beliefs and practices. We have some (most likely wrong and slanderous) accounts from (the invading) romans. And archeological finds. But stuff like Cernunos/Karnonos (for who I wrote one of my fav short stories ever) is known from one pillar, one cauldron, and nothing else! We don't even know what he was the god of!
It's so infuriating to me. If I could quizz a Gaulois, I'd write the most detailed and comprehensive guide to their belief, their knowledge of others tribes, and their everyday life. I'd want to know about their gods, their myths, and their superstitions.

A country that you'd like to visit some day?
Japan... Sad hours... I live in the UK, right. Scotland. And I had managed to get a work holiday visa to Japan! It's free to get, you just have an age limit. So I saved money (excruciatingly slowly, the UK being what it is), and finally planned it all. Got the visa (in Paris), got 400£ worth of shots (encephalitis, japanese encephalitis, rabies...), and was ready to apply for a Mongolian visa and start buying train tickets.
You see, I was going to do Scotland > London > Paris > Berlin > Warsaw > Vilnius > Tallinn > St Petersburg > Moscow > Irkutsk (on the transsiberian!!) > Ulaanbaatar > Beijing > Shanghai > Osaka
All train and bus, except for the last leg, which is a ferry.
When I was getting my second of three injections (always rabies + another and rabies turned me into a shivering plank of wood omg) the doctor was like... 'are you sure you want the last round done? There's this worrying cough developing in China at the moment...'
January 2020, RIP.
And then I aged out of the Japanese visa. And then Russia went to war and ruined its reputation forever. I spent a lot of time trying to make myself see that COVID had far worse repercussions for countless people, and I got off easily. But this was the culminations of a decade of dreaming and many years of planning and saving. It was a major bummer.

That's definitely too hard. I don't have a favourite. Maybe it's because I studied art. Not a matter of taste, but a matter of exposure. I've seen a lot of styles and a lot of artists and there is no one work I can point to and say "this is it". The inspiration art folder I keep is extremely varied itself. Variety is the spice of life.

I think moths are just so gorgeous. Butterflies too of course, but the moths are SO fluffy and some of them have insanely clean aesthetics.

I had to get two vaccines today (typhoid and Japanese encephalitis) so I’m sore and sulking. I have to go back in 1-2 weeks and get two more (HepA and Japanese encephalitis again), and then not long after, I need to get the Covid vaccine and probably the rabies vaccine too 😅 just gotta tell myself it’s worth it

ーChapter1
It’s seven o’clock.
In the dark room. In front of the laptop that emits a blue light. The guy feels tired who is stubble is sitting with his back against the backrest of the chair. Hob Gadling, he squints his eyes against the sunshine coming through the window. He went to the kitchen dragging his body feels weary, take out the mug from the cabinet and he boils water to make coffee. He prepared his lecture materials, graded the tests of all the students in his class, and he already finished all tasks. He brewing coffee while He rubbing his bleary eyes.
(“Oh, It’s already morning. I ended up doing my tasks...”)
I pour the bitter coffee into my stomach as I said that in my mind with disgust. I don’t feel sleeping now. I mean...I don’t like the time until get to sleep. Recently I always feel gloomy because I ends up thinking about something. He is worried about a certain “his friend”.
I have known him for over 600 years now. My life is full of new people and parting ways with many people since becoming an immortality. And as long as I continue to exist, I think I will continue to repeat the same thing. However, he was the only one who always appeared in front of me, he still looks the same every 100 years passed. At first, I couldn’t hide my confusion at the strangeness of his existence, but I realized I’m relieved with him. He is the only one who truly knows Hob Gadling who this free, lonely, immortal man. I can be myself when I'm with him. I felt that somewhere in my heart. However, conversations with him in the pub had ceased since 1889. It was only recently that I discovered the cause was actually had nothing to do with me at all, but I thought it was my fault for the past century or so.
It was words I said to him. You’ll never thought we get into a fight due to the word, but considering his personality, it was enough to make him angry. Hob was depressed because he couldn't meet him, and he reflected on that the whole time. Hob having such feelings and waiting for him who day after day to come, not knowing when he would appear, maybe never to appear again.
Then a few months ago, in August, summer was still hot and humid. He finally appeared before Hob who was spending his days with little bit of hope. He still looks the same, but he's expression more warmly than before and the word "friend" embraced Hob's heart warmly. He will never forget how happy he was.
After ordered one beer and made a toast, he introduced himself for the first time to his friend of 600 years in a calm voice.
He’s name is Morpheus. He is Dream of the Endless, Ruler of the Dreaming what is Kingdom of Dreams. It is another world beyond sleep, the dream realm. It's a place where deep down in people's hearts are embodied. As the King of Dreaming, he has dominion over people's dreams, and everything related to them. People forget him when they wake up, but they have met him in their dreams. So, that's how he knew Hob's name the first time he met him. By the way, there were trouble of lethargic encephalitis about 100 years ago. In fact, that happened because humans captured and imprisoned him, and he couldn't fulfill his duties as king. This was the reason he couldn't come to his appointment with Hob. He was surprised that his friend in front of him who the personification of the concept. But more than that, he shocked about his friend had been deprived of freedom and dignity, had lonely days for more than 100 years. And then, Hob couldn’t say a word for a while.
Morpheus was looking at Hob with wondering face, because he was silent after Morpheus spokes about himself in a bland tone. Hob noticed that and put his brain into full gear that doesn't work to say something. ("I have a lot something to say to him, but what I really want to say now...") After he thought through the best word that he wants to say to him for only a few seconds, he finally said...
“Can I... hug you?”
Have you really lived for over 600 years? I sometimes doubt myself like that. I'm amazed by myself that my vocabulary is poor even though I've lived for a long time, but it’s already too late. What’s done is done. I had made a similar mistake before and I had a bitter experience, but I did it again... I wanna say "I'm so idiot!" right now, but I hold it in. So, I look across the table timidly, there was an unexpected sight. Morpheus was looked confused, and then he said...
“Oh…Yes, that's fine.”
I was surprised that he accepted what I want to hug him, because I had expected he will ignore me or given me a cold look. Hob relieved to hear that. He got up slowly from his seat and got to Morpheus who was sitting across from him.
“Wait. Are you going to do that right here and now?”
“Oh...no?”
My brain doesn't work yet. He said “Yes” to me, but hug in a bar in the daytime is too much for him. That's because, he is that kind of person who shy, quiet and seems don't like stand out. From what I know, it is clear that he isn't such friendly.
He’s words that made me happy. So, I ended up act before thinking.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t expect to you said to me that I can hug you, so I was just happy. Well, maybe some other time...”
“It's not like I don't want do that…”
“What…?”
Hob was going to go back to his seat quickly, but he looked back in surprise. He said that and turned away. As always, he is quiet and gives cool vibes. However, Hob didn’t miss his ear blushing.
“You’ll stand out, standing around like that.”
I was given a start when I hear Morpheus's cool and collected voice. He is mysterious and solitary vibe. Regarding that, he is the same as before. But...I couldn’t pace myself because of him who became mellow than before.
“Yeah, right. Well then...”
Hob faced Morpheus again. He lowers himself to him in his seat, and gently put his arms around him. He feels the warmth from his snow-white skin.
How much he suffered while he was in captivity. The pain of being captivity for over 100 years, that must be unimaginable. The pain is even more palpable for Hob, because he had been suspected as a witch and captured in the past. He was taken away his freedom and dignity, he couldn't go back to his place, humans took his friend's life and he had been feeling sadness and hatred. It breaks Hob’s heart just thinking about that. So, he unconsciously held him tight.
“Really, I'm so glad I got to see you again.”
I find myself said that. I think, this is what i really want to say.
“I'm glad you come back safe.”
“Are you ok now?”
“Aren't you suffering now?”
“Did you go back your place after that?”
“Are you sleeping well?”
“Are you eating well?”
Hob held him tightly and felt his warmth, and he couldn't stop his slowly overflowing feelings. At the sight of hob like that, Morpheus was nervous just now, but he is relaxing and smile gently now. He just nods and says "Yeah" to each word that hob said to him with look of relief and soft voice. However, he didn't do that to the last word.
“Oh no, can't you still eat yet!?”
Morpheus chuckled because hob stayed away from him suddenly and said that with a worried look.
"No worries, I’m OK. I don’t need to eat to live like humans. Additionally, I’m not really interested in eat. It’s not that I don’t like that.”
“Well, certainly. I've never seen you eating something even once since I started seeing you, but today, why don’t we eat together? I'll treat you to anything all you like. You know, you treated me to dinner in the 17th century, you remember? So, now it's my turn to treat you to a meal.”
“How can I say...the food that I like is, um...What kind of food of this inn do you like?”
“Oh, food of this inn I like? Yeah, there is, but don't you want to eat what you like?”
“I can't think of foods that I like, and I don’t know much about menu of this inn. You had been waiting for me here for many years. So, I think you probably know about good dishes of this inn well.”
“Yeah, I know about that well! I’m "a regular customer" of the inn enough so that I can order anything without looking menu.”
“Then It’s settled, I'll order your recommended menu. Now that it's been a while since I've eaten, So I wanna eat dishes what you like.”
Hob was relieved to see Morpheus said that with a smile. As soon as he went back to his seat, he opened the menu. It looks like he was having fun talking to him, he talking about “This dish is the best in the inn” “This dish goes well with this sake” “That one tastes a little different than before” and so on. Sometimes, his heart throbbed when Morpheus gazed at him with a soft face.

7:00 pm. Hob looked out of the window, he can see sunset. There are some empty plates and some empty glasses on the table. They have talked about many things, as if fill a blank period of 100 years. Hob talking more than Morpheus the same as ever, but Morpheus began to tell him about himself, so Hob could hear many things from him compared to before. He felt happy about that change.
But we haven’t talked enough yet. I wanna keep small talking over drinks with him more. Time really flies when we’re having fun and I didn’t want to think about to reach the end of this time. The next time we'll meet is 100 years later. It's such a long time, it feels like forever for me.
“Shall we get going.”
Hob was given a start when he Morpheus' words and replied cheerfully to hide his sad mood. He paid and they left the INN.
The red sky at sunset is even darker than before, and shimmering stars in the distance. Hob smiling to hide his feelings that he wanna stay longer with Morpheus and talked to him who walking next to him.
“Thanks for today. I was so happy you came to see me, because I thought just a little, maybe we couldn’t meet again.”
“I’m really appreciate you, too. You waited for me that's why we are able to meet like this."
“I was drinking almost every day there, but that's over. Well, I also feel a little sad when I think that.”
“You drank so much, but you still haven’t enough to drink? Hob Gadling.”
I felt sad when I looked Morpheus said that to me with smile. I thought drank a lot but...now, I’m likely to sober up quickly. (“Yeah, right. I haven’t enough to drink. I really wanna hear your talk more with a beer in my hand.”) Hob said “Yeah, Maybe” to him casually while thinking about that, and then noticed his friend stopping behind him who just walked next to him.
“ Morpheus, what happened?”
He is dropping his gaze to a corner of the sidewalk silently. The setting sun lit up his face little bit gets red after drinking. He looks like trying to say something, he is fidgeting his thumb, and stroke his fist. When Hob was about to walk up to him, Morpheus looked at him, and then he said slowly
“Can I, see you again? I mean...not in a hundred years, it means sooner than that.”
We were surrounded with silence, it's as if time stood still. Hob stopping after he takes one step and blinking his big eyes, in surprise at what just happened.
His suggestion suddenly, it means, it is a sign that he wants to meet me more as I want to meet him more. I’m just surprised by him today. But, if it’s such a pleasant surprise, it’s always welcome.
I ran up to him and held his hands, before he looks away because he feels like running away from this situation.
“Yes, let’s meet up again soon! I wanna meet you more too! I still have a talk and drink with you more. When can we meet again?”
Hob responded with a beaming smile. He felt so down until a moment ago, but he feels relieved like his heart dancing in the wind fluffy now.
“I see...”
He mutters as he relieved when he sees Hob’s smile lit up by the setting sun.
“Anytime is okay, so it’s up to you.”
“Hmm well, when should I…I’m free weeknights, but sometimes my work is taking a long time at the university. So, I'd rather meet you my day off than weekday. I think we have enough time on that day.
“Sounds good, see you your day off next time.”
"How many days later we can meet, hmm, that's important..."
“You told me at the inn about you’ve been busy working until the end of this month. So, shall we meet next month?”
“Yeah! great! Then let’s meet on Sunday at the beginning of next month.”
“Okay, so see you then.”
After he said that, his jet black coat fluttered in the wind, losing its shape and scattering around him. I don’t know much about his power, but I think he will go back "Dreaming".
The loneliness about say goodbye to him was drowned out by the delighted of the meeting with him a month later.
“I had a great time today. Good night, Morpheus.”
I muttered with soft voice before Morpheus is disappearing into a black fluttered in the wind like sand. I didn’t know for sure my voice reaches him. But his face a little bit looks like blushing just before he disappeared was surely not a mistake.
“We met once a century before, but now once a month...”

This story is made up of 5chapters, Chapter1 is up to the point where they have set a date for meeting in a month. In episode 6 of the drama, their story ended with the scene where they met at THE NEW INN, and I imagined and wrote freely about what they happened after that. So far they had been drinking every 100 years, but I hope they also meet more than before in drama after last scene of ep6.
It was the first time for me fan fiction in writing, and it was a challenge with a lot of trial and error. Additionally, translating such a long text was so big challenge...! My English is not good, I'm sorry for my poor English🙇♀️ But if you enjoyed it, I'm so happy☺️🙏
