#janus is such an interesting character and i REALLY hope they keep him in character for the future episodes
Text
there’s something to be said about the fact that janus is the most professional out of all the sides. i genuinely think that he’s the only side playing his part because it’s his job, and not because he has any personal feelings attached.
virgil showed signs of genuinely wanting to be accepted and loved by thomas and the other sides. logan definitely values thomas’s validation a lot and becomes sad when he doesn’t get that validation. remus.. might actually be the second most professional side. but since he seems to work under janus (janus sending him over to thomas and telling him what to do), i guess a lot of that professionalism comes from janus himself. remus isn’t as stupid as he seems obviously, but he doesn’t have a clear-cut agenda like janus does.
i just think it’s interesting to see a side who is only concerned with thomas’s well-being because it’s their job and they want to do a good job. even janus’s frustration at thomas not taking his advice and later his excitement about thomas acknowledging his points came off to me as someone dealing with their kinda shitty boss (no offense to c!thomas, i just imagine that’s how janus views him lol). of course, janus has some fun at his job but i mean, i would too if no one ever listened to me and i’m automatically labelled as the bad guy.
all of this is slowly beginning to change since janus seems to be getting closer to patton but i guess we’ll have to wait and see if they actually become friends or if they’re more like coworkers on friendly terms.

Sanders Sides AgeRe Headcanons
Virgil is a flip!
Virgil's regression age is 0-5 pretty wide range!
Virgil's primary caregiver(s) are Patton and formerly Janus!
Virgil spends most of his time clinging onto his caregiver, poor baby has separation anxiety.
Virgil's primary littles are Roman, Logan, and formerly Remus!
Obviously it goes without saying Virgil is a very overbearing and protective caregiver. But let's be real, his littles have him wrapped around their fingers.
Virgil isn't afraid to punish his Little's if they misbehave. He's put Roman in timeout a handful of times for drawing on places that crayon doesn't go on.
Logan is a little!
Logans regression age(s) are 0-3! He's baby your Honor!
Logan's primary caregiver(s) are Patton, Virgil and (surprisingly) Janus! Roman babysits on occasions.
Logan tries his hardest to deny his regression, which often ends up with Logan having a meltdown after he slips involuntarily. The nearest caregiver will have to calm a babbling, crying infant down after the words in his book stopped making sense.
Logan is a very well behaved little, well, most of the time. Sometimes when he's fussy—most likely because it's close to nap-time—he'll start an unwanted game of hide-&-seek in attempt to evade nap-time.
Logan's Paci is blue and grey with a little science breaker sticker on it, Patton let Logan decorate is Pacifier, baby wanted to keep it simple!
Logan has a love-hate relationship with nap-time! He loves when his caregivers read to him, but Logan isn't crazy over the actual sleeping part. Remus and Roman made a mobile for his crib (don't worry Remus isn't going to give anything inappropriate to a baby), it has little planets and rocket-ships on it!
Patton is a caregiver!
Patton's primary littles are Virgil and Logan!
Obviously Patton is the fun, energetic Papa! He'll play any game his littles want!
Patton will melt if his littles were to call him Papa, that's like, his number one goal right there.
Patton gives the best cuddles, like holy cheese. Anytime there's a fussy kiddo, Patton just picks 'em up and they're out in minutes.
Patton makes the best Angel milk, it's just the right temperature, it's not too sugary, just the right amount of vanilla, Virgil swears Patton uses witchcraft when he makes the bottles.
Patton always has a fully stock jar of cookies, and if his littles are good that day they can have one before bed! He has all kinds and flavors, dairy free, gluten free, peanut free, Patton knows his littles dietary restrictions to a T.
Janus is a caregiver!
Janus's primary littles are Remus, Logan, and formerly Virgil!
Much like Virgil, Janus is also protective, Janus might be a liar, but he never wants his Kiddo's around those kinds of people.
Janus absolutely loves reading to his Kiddo's, any story they'd like, he'll read it. If Janus's littles have a favorite book, Janus will make little hand puppets of the characters and act out the story.
Janus isn't a very athletic Caregiver, so the more hyper kiddos aren't really his specialty, but that doesn't mean he doesn't love his hyper babies any less! Janus loves all his babies!
Janus can always tell when his Kiddo's are lying. But that doesn't mean he has the heart to punish them. Janus just can't bring himself to scrub the doodles off his wall, his little worked so hard on them! His office has many a crayon doodles.
I feel like Janus is the one who handles money and financial stuff when Logan is out or the other person seems sketchy, so I assume Janus has a little cash on him, about 80% 100% goes to his littles.
Roman is a babysitter!
Roman's primary littles are whichever little needs babysat! Roman has no fixed little, although he's Remus's most preferred caregiver.
Roman isn't really "dad" material per se, he's more like the fun, chaotic uncle that lets you have candy before bed when dad Patton said no!
Roman is a very high energy babysitter, he can keep up with nearly any kiddo!
Kiddo's of all ages love Romans over-the-top personality, he's the best storyteller! He even acts the story out!
Roman used to be a regressor, but after a little trial and error he found it just wasn't for him. He liked it, but he just didn't feel little. Roman is an occasional Age Dreamer!
Roman is always happy to babysit, he hopes one day he'll have a kiddo of his own that he can spoil, but for now he's happy playing with the other kiddos.
Remus is a little!
Remus's regression age is 6-9 older kiddo!
Remus's primary caregiver(s) are Janus and formerly Roman!
Remus will never admit it, but all his other caregivers just aren't as good as Roman. He misses his big brother. Sometimes Remus's meltdowns get so bad that Janus has to call Roman.
Remus is a very energetic little, always bouncing around and moving. He loves physical activities like tag.
Remus is surprisingly pretty well behaved. Mostly because his chaotic creativity is rather...adult. Not very kiddo friendly.
Remus has one toy, it's his absolute favorite. A small octopus with a top-hat and monocle that Roman bought him. He named his plushie Mister Octo. Mister Octo is always with Remus, even when he isn't in Littlespace.

Try Your Best (That's All We Can Do)
Prompts: Hi there sjsksks I absolutely *adore* your fics, and I can't wait to dive in your non tss content!! But for now, I hope you don't mind a request! It's kinda specific, but I have 'een craving for a fic of like, a side or character reacting to their little brother Virgil getting into his first Serious Relationship? Because I am always a sucker for people being protective over the emo boy. Bonus if the Big Brother and New Boyfriend are characters who don't really get along w each other, like Roman and Janus or Thomas and Janus etc? - anon
I yearn for Remus angst with parental Janus. That is all, thank you - Auggie
Read on Ao3
Warnings: coming out (no bad reactions, promise), discussions of bullying
Pairings: prinxiety but it isn't the focus
Word Count: 3085
Trying to parent is...a challenge. Especially when your children have competing needs.
Virgil gets a new boyfriend. Remus isn't happy about it because it's his former bully.
No conversation that follows was going to be easy.
Janus looks up from the kitchen as the front door opens and closes. “Virgil? Is that you?”
“Yeah, Dad, it’s me.”
Ah. Full sentences. This poses to be an interesting evening. Janus quickly reaches for a glass and fills it with water, setting it on the edge of the counter as he turns back to making sure the pasta water doesn’t boil over.
Sure enough, when Virgil emerges from putting away his coat and shoes, his backpack is firmly slung over both shoulders and his fringe is all over his face. He mumbles a quiet be right back as he goes up the stairs, the door to his room opening and closing.
Janus sighs, absentmindedly fiddling with the wooden spoon in his hand. Is this something happening at school? Did one of his teachers say something? A medication issue?
It’s also possible this is just a bad day and he’s overthinking it.
Footsteps on the stairs again and then Virgil’s appearing, taking the glass of water and drinking until it’s half empty. He wipes the back of his hand against his mouth and glances up sheepishly.
“Sorry.”
“Don’t apologize, sweetie, you didn’t do anything wrong.” He nudges the glass back over. “You just let me know if you want more.”
“I’m a full human, Dad, I can get my own water.”
“Oh, this seems to be a development from this past weekend. Did you spontaneously grow your own arms at school today?”
Virgil snorts. “Yeah, it’s this new science class thing we’re doing about developmental biology.”
“Mm, back in my day they used to send us home with permission slips before doing anything outside of traditional schooling methods for teaching.”
“Uh-huh. Well, you can sue evolution if you really want to.”
Janus sighs dramatically, fighting a smile. “You know I would, dear, but their ability to do paperwork is absolutely abysmal. I’m still waiting on the request form for why my bones can decide to go on strike and why your internal organs can unionize against you.”
“Hey, unionizing is a great thing that more workers should do, I just wish it wasn’t against me. I’m still proud of them.”
Janus chuckles, stirring the pasta. “Are you feeling better, sweetie?”
Virgil worries the end of his sleeve. “Yeah, a bit. Thanks.”
“Of course. Do you want to talk about it?”
“Yeah, yeah, I, um…it’s something I need to talk about.”
“Alright. Would you like to do it now or after dinner?”
“…can we do it now?”
“Yes, if you like.” He sets a timer and turns around, taking the oven mitt off and lying it on the counter. “Do you want to wait until Remus gets home?”
Virgil shakes his head.
“Okay. Can we have this conversation in here or would you rather be on the couch?”
“Here is fine.”
Janus watches him fidget with the strings of his hoodie. His gaze keeps darting around the room, lingering for a second too long on the clock in the corner.
“Sorry,” he blurts, “can you—can you tell me you love me?”
“What?”
“Nevermind, that was stupid, don’t listen to me.”
“Of course, I love you, sweetie,” Janus says softly, a little dismayed at how quickly Virgil gave up on that, “you’re my baby.”
“‘M not a baby.”
“Maybe not, but you’re my baby.”
“Okay, Dad, jeez.” Virgil rubs at his red cheeks, sleeves pulled up over his hands. “Don’t need to do that.”
He fidgets for a little longer before he takes a deep breath and forces his hands down by his sides.
“I have a boyfriend.”
Janus blinks. “Congratulations, sweetie, I’m happy for you.”
“I know you don’t—wait, what?” Virgil’s head snaps up, staring at him. “Just like that?”
“You know I don’t what?”
“Huh?”
“What were you going to say,” Janus asks gently, “I don’t what?”
“Oh.” Virgil glances away, chewing on his lip. “I was gonna say ‘you don’t know I’m gay,’ but…uh…did you?”
“I had my suspicions,” Janus says, softly tapping his cheek to tell Virgil not to bite, “but no, I didn’t know for certain until right now.”
Virgil frowns. “Then why’d you jump straight to saying congrats?”
“It’s not my business to tell you how to come out, sweetie. You get to decide how you do that.” He smiles. “And yeah, my baby’s got a partner. That’s a congratulatory affair.”
“Oh my god,” Virgil mumbles, burying his face in his hands, “you gotta stop doing that.”
Janus chuckles before he’s reaching out to carefully coax Virgil’s hands away from his face. “I’m only teasing, sweetie. Really, I’m happy for you.”
Virgil peeks out shyly. “Really?”
“Yes, sweetie, really.”
Ah, there’s his baby’s smile. He barely resists the urge to pinch his cheek, ruffling his hair instead. Virgil looks a bit happier now, some of the tension leaving his shoulders as Janus steps back to pay attention to the pasta.
“So,” he calls, sliding the oven mitt back on, “what’s his name?”
“Uh, Roman.”
Janus pauses. “Roman Prince?”
“Wait, you know him?”
Janus takes a deep breath, sliding the oven mitt back off and setting it on the counter.
This is going to be an interesting evening.
“…Dad?”
“Sorry, sweetie, lost in my own head.” He turns back around. “Yes, sweetie, I’ve heard of Roman before.”
“Why’re you saying it like that?” Virgil draws his hands up again. “Am I in trouble?”
“No, sweetie, you’re not in trouble.”
The pause where Virgil looks away guilty makes him frown.
“Is there something you’re not telling me?”
“I, um…” Tug on the hoodie strings. “…might have a date tonight? For dinner?”
“We have a rule about night plans, Virgil.”
“I know, I know, I just—“ Virgil tugs the strings again. “—I—I just—“
“Just what, baby?”
“I wasn’t sure how you were gonna react so I needed an escape plan,” Virgil blurts out, “okay?”
Oh. Oh, dear. He needs a moment from that.
Hearing that his baby didn’t know that he would always, always be loved and supported so much so that he needed an escape plan if something goes wrong—and he knows about Virgil’s anxiety, he understands that, but still.
He takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly, reaching out a hand.
“Sweetie, come here, please.”
Virgil glances up, shuffling close enough to shove a hoodie-covered hand out. Janus takes it and brings him in slowly, gently calling his name until he looks up.
“I’m sorry to hear that felt scared enough to need an escape plan,” he says softly, “and I’m…well, I’m not thrilled that you made evening plans without telling me first.”
“I know it’s ‘cause you need to know where we are,” Virgil mumbles.
“Yes, baby, that’s why.”
“…am I in trouble?”
“No, sweetie, you’re not in trouble. Oh, sweetie,” he coos when he sees Virgil’s eyes well up, “come here, do you want a hug?”
Virgil sniffles and buries his face in Janus’s chest, letting his arms come up and wrap around him. He hums, rubbing Virgil’s back and pressing a kiss to the top of his head.
“This must be a lot, sweetie,” he murmurs, rocking them slightly back and forth, “shh, shh, it’s okay. I’m not mad at you, you’re not in trouble.”
Virgil sniffles, fingers twisting into Janus’s shirt, still sobbing, but shoving himself into Janus’s hold instead of away from it is always preferable so he weathers it without complaint. They stay like that for a while until Janus reaches out and turns the stove off.
“Sorry.”
“For what, sweetie?”
“Making plans. Being dramatic. Crying on you.”
“It’s okay, baby. You’re okay.” He carefully tilts Virgil’s chin up and wipes his face clean. “There. Can’t have you looking all swollen and puffy on your date, can we?”
He’s rewarded with a watery little giggle and he smiles, nudging him toward the stairs.
“Do you need to go change?”
“Nah. ‘M good. ’S not fancy.”
“Mm.”
Janus reaches for the oven mitt and the pot, straining the pasta as steam rises in the kitchen. He hears Virgil shuffling around as he reaches for the olive oil.
“Hey, Dad?”
“Hm?”
“Why did you react like that when I said Roman’s name?”
Janus lets out another slow breath as he adds the olive oil. “Because I believe I understand why you didn’t want to have this conversation with Remus present.”
“I, um…it’s more because I, uh, didn’t know how you would react and I didn’t want to have to deal with both of you yelling at me at the same time. N-not that I thought you would, I just—“
“Shh,” Janus murmurs, “you don’t have to apologize for being anxious about coming out, sweetie.”
“…thanks.”
“But you know, then, about Remus and Roman’s complicated history.”
“I mean like, I knew about it ‘cause Remus talked about it,” Virgil mumbles, “but like…I’ve never seen it? Not really, I’ve just seen them yell at each other down the hall, and then it’s like every other person in high school.”
Janus nods.
“And he’s…Roman’s been really good to me,” he continues, ears beginning to flush a bit—he’ll tease his baby about that later, now’s not the time—“like—he’s the only other person aside from you guys that’s actually, like, listened to me about my anxiety? And he’s really nice about making sure I don’t get overwhelmed and he started keeping an extra hoodie in his car for me, and—and—“
He seems to realize he’s rambling and glances up.
“…I don’t know, Dad. I want to believe Remus and I trust him, you know I do, but…”
“It seems like it’s a different person?”
“…yeah.”
Janus takes a deep breath. “Well, I do think you should talk about this with Remus—and also with Roman, but I believe you.”
“You do?”
“People can change a lot between middle school and high school. It seems like Roman is no exception.” He levels a look at him. “But you will tell one of us if you ever feel otherwise, won’t you?”
“Yeah, yeah, I promise.”
“I mean it,” Janus presses, “don’t worry about any ‘I told you so’s, if that boy ever makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, you come straight to me, do you understand?”
“Come gay to you,” Virgil mumbles before Janus clears his throat, “yeah, yeah, Dad, I understand. I will.”
“Good.”
“Wait, that’s it?”
“You’re a responsible person, Virgil, I trust your judgment.” He smiles encouragingly when Virgil perks up hopefully. “I will recommend that you talk to Remus sooner rather than later, because—“
“What the fuck are you doing here?”
The shout from outside their front door makes both of them wince.
“…to avoid something like that,” Janus finishes weakly, making sure the stove is off before he’s following Virgil to the front door.
He arrives just in time to see Virgil throw the door open, revealing a snarling Remus who looks about to throw his backpack at Roman, who’s standing at the base of the steps near his car, a varsity jacket slung over his shoulders. He looks up when the door opens and Janus can see his expression visibly soften when he spots Virgil.
“Hey,” he calls, “are you ready to go?”
“Go? Fucking go where?” Remus steps closer. “You’re not taking my brother anywhere, you bastard!”
“That’s not up to you, Remus.”
“And it sure as hell isn’t up to you.”
“Oh, god,” Virgil mumbles, quickly reaching over and giving Janus a quick hug before going down the steps, “Remus, it’s fine.”
“Fine? Fine?” Remus gestures at Roman. “This prick thinks he can just show up and snap his fingers and you’ll follow him like a good little puppy and you say it’s fine?”
“Remus,” Virgil says, “just—just go in, please.”
“No! I’m not leaving you alone with him!”
“That’s not your choice,” Roman says quietly, “it’s Virgil’s.”
“And why in the fuck would my brother want to go anywhere with you?”
Janus can see the moment Virgil laces his fingers through Roman’s and mentally braces himself.
“What the fuck?”
“Alright,” he calls, firmly, drawing the attention of the three boys before they can piss off the neighbors anymore, “Remus, come inside, please. Virgil, keep your phone on. Roman, I want him home by ten o’clock, no later, and I will be calling your parents if you’re a moment late.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Thanks, Dad.”
“Enjoy your evening, boys.”
“Come on,” Roman says softly, giving Virgil’s hand a tug, “I’ve got a reservation.”
“Remus,” Janus says before Remus can start yelling again, “come in, please.”
Remus’s face is thunderous as he stomps up the stairs, barely even acknowledging Janus as he throws his bag onto the couch. Janus catches sight of one of their neighbors heading up their own stairs and they give him a little ‘good luck’ wave.
He waves back and goes inside.
“Remus?” Remus has stomped up the stairs, and he winces as he hears the door slam shut.
It opens again a second later with a mumbled sorry, didn’t mean to close it that hard.
He sighs, carefully climbing the stairs and knocking on Remus’s door. “Can I come in, sweetie?”
“…fine.”
“Thank you.” He opens the door and glances around, spotting Remus curled up in the corner with a blanket tossed over his head. “Oh, honey…”
The blanket corner shifts, curling in on itself. Janus walks over, crouching down a good distance away.
“Can you talk to me from under there?”
A sniffle and his heart twists at the thought of his little anomaly crying under there. “Why’re you taking Virgil’s side?”
“I’m not taking Virgil’s side in this, honey.”
“Yes, you are. You let him go with Roman.”
“Virgil’s old enough to make his own decisions, honey. You know that.”
“But it’s Roman,” Remus mutters, the blanket shifting again, “how could you let him do that?”
“I trust Virgil’s judgment.”
“He didn’t even ask about evening plans.”
Janus takes a deep breath and eases himself down to sit. “Why don’t you tell me why you’re really upset, honey?”
Remus is quiet for a minute, only sniffling occasionally, before there’s a very quiet sob. “…why did he do that to me?”
“Do what, honey?”
“Roman hurt me,” Remus mumbles, “he—he really hurt me, Dad. And he—nothing ever happened.”
Janus does know this. Roman had never faced any severe consequences from the school for how much he bullied Remus when they were all younger, and he’d been on the verge of taking Remus and Virgil out of that school to solve it.
“I know, honey,” he says as gently as he can, “I know he did.”
“So then how could you let this happen? How could Virgil—how could he—“
Another sob interrupts him and Janus fights the urge to reach out and bundle him into his arms. Not yet, not yet.
“Is Roman still bullying you?”
“Yes.”
“Does Virgil know that?”
“He should. Roman does it in front of him.”
Janus takes another deep breath. “What does he do?”
“Yells at me, insults me, belittles me.” A loud sniff. “I can keep going.”
“And you think Virgil would know about this and not do anything about it?”
A pause. Then the blanket shifts. “…no.”
“Virgil and I talked a little bit before you got home,” Janus says, treading carefully, “and he says that he’s seen you and Roman yell things at each other in the halls, but that’s it.”
The blanket rustles. “Yeah, that’s true.”
“Is Roman doing anything else to you?”
“…no.”
“Is Roman the one yelling at you first?”
“Sometimes,” Remus bites out, “sometimes he’s the one who says it first. It’s not always me.”
“I didn’t say it was.” When Remus curls up tighter, Janus lets out a sympathetic noise. “I’m not saying that you shouldn’t feel hurt, or that whatever pain you’re feeling is wrong, but can you honestly say to me that Roman is still bullying you as badly as he was five years ago?”
A pause. He really hopes Remus doesn’t try to lie.
“…no.”
He lets out a breath. “Thank you, honey. Have you ever seen him do anything to Virgil?”
“No.”
“Do you really think Virgil would knowingly get into a relationship with someone who hurts you?”
“No.”
“I know it’s not what you want to hear,” Janus murmurs, shifting a little on the floor, “but people do change between middle school and high school. It’s been five years, honey, people can definitely change in that time.”
“I just wish he would’ve told me.”
“You and me both, honey.”
A moment passes, then the blanket moves and reveals a sniffly and pouty Remus and Janus melts.
“C’mere, honey.”
Remus scrambles forward, launching himself into Janus’s arms. Janus wraps his arms around his little anomaly and kisses his temple, scooping him into his lap and rocking him back and forth.
“I’m proud of you, little anomaly,” he murmurs, kissing him again, “talking about this stuff is hard. You did good.”
“I’m sorry for being so loud earlier. And for shouting at Virgil.”
“And you can have a talk with him later, if you want.”
“…can you be there too?”
“Yeah, little anomaly, I can.” He ruffles Remus’s hair. “Can we go eat some dinner now? All these emotions are making me hungry.”
Remus nods, still looking a little too puffy and upset. He nudges him.
“Do you know what we can do since Virgil isn’t in tonight?”
There’s the happy little face he wants. “Can we watch the movie?”
“Yes, little anomaly, we can watch the movie. Let’s eat dinner first, though, okay?”
“You’re the best, Dad. You’re the best ever.”
“I try,” Janus chuckles, pulling his son back in for another hug and closing his eyes, “I try my best.”

for @moceit-appreciation-week Day 1: Flowers
Word Count: 1233
Characters: Janus, Patton
Rating: G
Warnings: Food mention, mentions of twin shenanigans, implied/referenced dukexiety
Janus loves flowers, and knows how to communicate using them, he just doesn’t ever receive them, especially not on Valentine’s Day. At least up until now. Patton is so sweet but clearly he doesn’t know what different flowers mean. Janus is flattered regardless. And then some...
---
Janus hated flowers, he absolutely loathed them. He didn't think it was a sweet gesture to give someone flowers as a gift, and certainly not in a romantic sense! He wasn't bitter that he never got flowers, even from friends. He knew it was a difficult task when he knew their meanings and how to tend to them, but it certainly did not hurt. He certainly was never bitter on Valentine's day when all the talk about love was overwhelming. And the one side who would gush about love in every sense of the word seemed to never notice how Janus felt.
Janus awoke on that cold February morning and decided not to get out of the warm cocoon of his bedding. He was not mentally prepared to deal with going to the common area when Roman would have the entire place decorated with hearts and candles and assorted blossoms. Of course he was also expecting Remus to run around with a lighter and a can of hairspray to make a mess. But he couldn’t just let Thomas’ mind go to chaos.
Reluctantly, Janus rose from his nest and bundled himself in his plushest bathrobe and slid into his favorite slippers. With a sigh he pulled on his gloves and stepped into the hall, anticipating a headache.
He was not at all surprised to see it was covered in paper hearts, anatomically correct paper hearts, because naturally Roman influenced his twin to decorate. These he could live with. These were a reminder that he was not alone, even if he was lonely.
He strode down the hall to the common area, not interested in appearing in the middle of a discussion all of a sudden. It would have been a good way to steer clear of the sickening sweetness, but he spotted a vase of flowers by Virgil's door.
He could glean that it was not as platonic as the whimsical green cockscomb and steadfast violets suggested, not when there were purple gladioli, and purple and red roses. Janus pouted and kept moving, he would have to commend Remus for avoiding spider lilies and naked man orchids later, when he was feeling less dismal.
He trudged down to the kitchen, ignoring the decor, and tried to keep quiet. It was still early, and he could respect that the others needed sleep. He needed hot tea and perhaps a muffin while he could still enjoy the quiet.
The sound of a kettle screaming dashed his hopes. He entered the kitchen to find Patton making a pot of tea—his tea—and setting up a tray with a small bouquet and a humble breakfast. Patton was bobbing in place and humming a happy tune in his cat onesie.
"Oh!" Patton gasped when he noticed Janus in the entryway, "You're up!" He smiled warmly and resisted the urge to pull him into a hug. Janus could see his hands twitching from the effort. He could appreciate that Patton respected his boundaries, even though Janus could certainly use a hug.
"As are you," he yawned, showing off his fangs, "Preparing a special breakfast for a special friend?" Patton blushed and rubbed his neck.
"Something like that," Patton muttered, "I was going to bring this stuff to you, since I know you don't like the cold and you seem really bummed out on Valentine's day. I thought it might cheer you up!"
Janus smiled softly at his squirming and shyness. Patton was so cute and sweet, and it was hard not to want to sweep him off his feet and cuddle with him.
"And you thought you would include a bouquet?" Janus hummed and moved to inspect the flowers on the tray. Cyclamen, peonies, and a yellow rose—Janus reflexively clicked his tongue.
"Do you not like flowers?" Patton asked timidly. Janus shook his head and looked up at him.
"I do, to the extent that I know far too much about their meanings."
"Oh! That's so cool!" Patton squeaked, "Did I say something bad?" Janus couldn't bring himself to lie to those doe-eyes.
"You said you're angry, you hope I suffer the effects of infidelity, and you want me to keep my distance," Janus noted, watching Patton's face fall, "Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you intended to say that through flowers."
"Oh goodness no!" Patton gasped, "I didn't even think that those flowers were so mean!"
"It's quite alright, Dad-fodil, you didn't know and it's rather amusing," Janus said and went to remove the tea bags from the pot.
"What do daffodils mean?" Patton asked and stopped him. Janus paused and let Patton handle the tea.
"Hm, new beginnings, affection, chivalry, and resilience."
"That's really sweet of you, Jan," Patton said as he discarded the used teabags. Janus flushed and turned his face away, hiding the human side from Patton. He was not ready to share that daffodils also represented unequaled love. That would be setting himself up for heartbreak and rejection.
"Say, Janus, what flowers symbolize devotion, affection, and admiration?"
"Purple heather, pink lilies, and purple orchids all can symbolize admiration," Janus responded and stared at the bouquet, "Edelweiss, heliotropes, and lavender symbolize devotion, and morning glories and matthiolas can mean affection. Honeysuckles tend to encapsulate all three traits."
"Really?" Patton asked and glanced at him. Janus nodded, not looking at him. Patton smirked to himself—he wasn't lying when he said he didn't know his flowers were mean but he did know a little bit about some flowers. With a wave of his hand, he transformed the flowers into something he hoped meant something less offensive.
Janus' eyes went wide. Patton just learned about the honeysuckles and purple heather, so they were no surprise, but the other flowers were. He had to wonder if Patton knew what the yellow irises, orange tulips, white acacia, and gardenias could mean.
"I know we don't always see eye-to-eye," Patton began with a slight wavering in his voice, "but I really think you're an amazing person who can see me for me, and I really appreciate your company and support. It's hard to see myself without you in my life and I wanted to show you how much you mean to me in a way you could really appreciate."
"What is it you want to say? I want to be sure that it wasn't lost in translation," Janus hummed despite his rapid heart rate. He picked up the bouquet and gently ran his fingers over the petals.
"I mean, well, I admire you and I might like you as more than a friend. A lot. I don't want to call it love, not yet, but I feel this urge to be close to you, to be with you. I don't expect you to feel the same or to know what to say right now, but I don't want to keep it to myself," Patton explained and tapped his pointer fingers together.
Janus turned and cupped his face, gently stroking his thumb over Patton's cheek. He offered Patton a soft smile and melted when Patton leaned into the touch.
"Perhaps you can tell me more over breakfast and cuddles. If not, I'm more than willing to return those feelings at your pace,” Janus hummed, unable to keep from grinning more at Patton’s shocked expression as it turned mischievous.
“I’d love to,” Patton giggled and kissed his wrist, “lead the way.”

Note
For the fake fic title, if you're still doing it: Why do you hate me? (I honestly don't know where I came up with this lol)
X-Men AU!!! Found Family + Anxceit friendship. TW: child soldiers, child endangerment, abuse etc
(So typical X-men universe set up: some people are born with the X gene, which typically triggers during puberty, giving that person a mutation which normally results in cool powers. Many people hate mutants for their differences (/ bad press of people using their mutant powers for the evilz) and so most mutants live in hiding. The Xavier Institute is a school set up by an extremely powerful mutant which seeks to provide a safe space for young mutants to learn to manage their powers, get a regular education and hopes to see peace between humanity and mutant kind. The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants is a group of mutants who believe humans will never let mutant live in peace and do various anti-human, pro-mutant vaguely terrorist-y actions (there’s like a billion version of the x-men and these details may not be correct for all the versions all of the time because comics but this is the vague idea))
ANYWAY PLOT - Containment breach at the Super Secret Child Soldier Lab (SSCSL) - Subject VII has escaped. Subject VII is only 6-7 years old but his mutations were artificially triggered much younger than is normal. He can warp reality and create very sophisticated illusions, but has very limited control over his powers.
Cut too - Virgil and Dee, a couple of teenage mutants living on the street. They find a little boy with a buzzcut wandering around The Bad Part Of Town and Virgil immediately decides they need to adopt/help him (Dee makes more of a fuss about how this is not their responsibility and the kids barely even talking and do you know how hard I work just to keep you and now you wanna add another mouth to feed?? Huhh?? but obviously does not actually say no) (Dee is like. Barely any older than Virgil he’s just dramatic).
Naturally, just as the three of them have had time to bond, the SSCSL and other assorted bad guys show up to try and take VII back. There’s a big fight, Virgil and Dee have a lot more experience with flight and would probably have ended up dead if the X-men (Patton and Logan) hadn't shown up to save them.
But they lose VII.
Patton and Logan take them back to the Xavier institute to recuperate and offer to let them stay. They can go to school there, get some training and help the X-men track down VII and the whole SSCSL. Virgil says yes, Dee says no.
(So, reasoning - Virgil's mutation developed when he was 12. It was not pleasant. Various students at his school were injured and the media set up a which hunt for the mutant that caused the chaos. Virgil ran away from home because he was worried about the backlash on his family and about hurting anyone else again. So to him, this school full of mutants who can help him control his power, can offer him stability and a return to normal structures and routines, who are promising to help him get in contact with his parents if and when he’s ready?? This is like every fantasy he’s ever had come true
Unlike the other characters, Dee’s primary mutation is physical. He was born with it, its very obvious and its resulted in him being rejected for most of his life. He bounced around increasingly disturbing foster homes before running away when he was very young, so most of his memories are of living on the streets and surviving on his own. So, to him, number one: all adults are inherently untrustworthy idiots and number two: stay at a school? where they expect him to have a curfew? and, what - write essays? follow all their random arbitrary rules? rely on them for food and heat and all that shit? Completely ludicrous.)
It doesn't occur to either of them that the other one isn't going to agree with them. The resulting argument is epic and cruel, both hurling accusations at the other (Ungrateful /controlling are two of the big ones..) and both basically feeling hateful and 100% betrayed. Dee leaves and although they look for him, he’s got a lifetime experience of hiding and they cant find him.
CUT TO - 5 years later. Virgil is a (semi) well adjusted 19 year old junior X-men. He’s still a bit withdrawn, but is very close with Patton and Logan. He’s still holding out hope of finding VII one day and still firmly pretending he’s not listing out for any possible news of Dee (there were rumours some years ago of him joining the brother hood of evil mutants but then it all went quiet) who he, of course, hates for his betrayal.
BUT THEN - mysterious knocking at the door in the night. Dee, now wearing a hat and cape and calling himself Janus, has returned. And he’s brought with him a little boy with a buzzcut and a tattoo of XXII on his foot.
Janus and Virgil need to put aside their resentment and work together to help XXII, who really does not seem interested in helping them, and hopefully use any clues he can give them about the SSCSL to track down VII. But that's difficult when they’re both still struggling with their own trauma and have no idea how to reconnect - both of them want to ask why do you hate me but are a bit too scared of the answer. ...
This already got way to long so mutant power/ extra back story descriptions under cut!
Patton - 22/27 years old. An extremely powerful telepath/empath. It takes him serious concentration and focus to not hear peoples thoughts and its almost impossible to not feel their feelings. Some people dislike him because of this as they feel he's spying on them. Grew up in the Xavier institute and 100% believes in and is committed to the future where humans and mutants live in harmony. Has pretty limited life experience in the real world. Sometimes floats. (inspired by professor X)
Logan - 21/26 years old. Fires destructive laser beams from his eyes. Was in a car accident when he was younger leaving him with permanent but apparently harmless brain damage - until his mutation developed and he slowly realised that no matter how much he trained he just couldn't control his power. Has to wear specialised eye guards at all times to keep himself from accidentally destroying everything around him. Had big plans to go to university and was angry at his mutation for a long time for getting in the way of that. Eventually enrolled online and is now a very dedicated teacher at the Institute. (inspired by cyclops)
Janus - 15(?) / 20(?) His primary mutation is  lizard/snake like scales over most of his body, but especially the left side. Has oversized fangs, and yellow eye and a short lizard tail. His secondary mutation makes him immune to almost any sort of mental based mutation (so Logan could still knock him on his ass with his lasers, but Patton cant sense anything form him and Virgil cant whammy him). Spent a lot of his life on his own and got by being sneaky, cunning and charming. Initially took Virgil in because he saw that his powers could be useful for keeping them both safe, but eventually Virgil became his first real friend.
Virgil - 14/19. Shadow manipulation and ‘draining’. Virgil can make himself (and with practice, people he touches) literally disappear into the shadows. He can also direct shadows as powerful energy ‘blasts’, but in order to do so he has to drain any surrounding living things of their energy. When his mutation first developed  he took out half of the school hall where his exam was being held, leaving 15 students in a coma. (inspired by rouge/shadow cat)
VII - 6? / 11? Reality warping/illusion powers. One of the institutes first successful subjects. He was able to escape by changing the wall of his cell into a door. He finds it hard to talk but can project his ideas as lifelike illusions who can talk for him. One of his best is the image a handsome grown up Prince and he will often use this Illusion as an avatar to communicate. When he was 6 he did have some hazy memories of outside the SSCSL and expressed a desire to go home. Current status is unknown.
XXI - 7.  Illusion powers  (reality warping has been removed from the program by his time as subjects proved too difficult to control). Has no memories of outside the institute and is extremely uncooperative with his new captors/guardians. He does not understand the affection they’re trying to show him and lashes out a lot, often by creating a lot of extremely disturbing and graphic illusions. Bites.

The Problem With Asides
Before I get into anything I want to clarify that this is not going to be a criticism of the two Asides episodes we’ve gotten so far. This is a critique of the concept of Sanders Asides as a separate series from the original Sanders Sides. A second note I want to make is that this is, just as all my other posts are, a personal opinion. This is not meant to be an attack on anyone, just a general criticism from a confused writer and viewer of the show.
And final disclaimer: A lot of what I’m going to say is based on information that I no longer have available. It’ll mostly be me recalling things I heard and if I at any point get something wrong please feel free to let me know.
That being said, let’s get into this, shall we?
(Fair warning this post is very long hence why I’ve divided it into parts so feel free to read then come back as you wish)
Part One: The Concept of Asides
Some time ago last year, I believe shortly after Dealing With Intrusive Thoughts came out, was when the idea for Sanders Asides was first announced. The basic concept of it being shorter, more lighthearted videos focusing on the Sides outside of the main storyline. This format would allow them to give us more Sides content in between the long waits for the main series since those episodes were beginning to take more time to produce.
Of course, everyone was eager for more Sides, so the majority of people were excited. Not only that but due to the main series tackling heavier themes, the episodes were becoming more angsty with less time for the characters to just relax and goof off with each other. The idea of having episodes reminiscent of the low stakes, sillier, happier content of season one was a welcome break from the more complex episodes and would be a nice return to form for the series.
We were also informed that these episodes would be much simpler than their main series counterparts and wouldn’t disrupt the work being done on Sanders Sides, which meant we didn’t have to worry about long gaps between the main story episodes, right?
(Another disclaimer: I am perfectly aware of the main reason why we were not given as much content last year and am not blaming Thomas or the team for doing what was necessary to keep themselves safe and hope they continue to do so as this continues into the new year)
Jump to November 22, 2019, where we got our first official episode of Sanders Asides, roughly five months after DWIT came out. Which, for this fandom, was record time to get more content and I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly they were able to get this out. Though at the same time, I wondered why it took five months to make what was meant to be a short, simple episode.
So imagine my surprise when I went to watch the episode and saw it was nearly 20 minutes long. Which, okay, isn’t that bad when you compare it to the lengths of the more recent Sanders Sides episodes. But at the time, I was under the impression that the Asides would be, well, much shorter. The longest I expected would be maybe 15 minutes, but you know what? It’s the first episode and it has been a while since we’ve had Sides content, so maybe they wanted to give us a little extra due to the long wait.
I started the episode and at first, I was overjoyed when I saw the first shot of all the Sides sitting in the living room in their onesies about to have a movie night. This was exactly what I’d been hoping to see from this series! It’s pretty much a staple thing in the fandom for the Sides to have movie nights together, and now it was happening in canon!
At the moment, I had high hopes for this series and was filled with joy.
Then that hope and joy were immediately crushed when I realized this was yet just another Virgil-centric angst episode. In fact, this entire episode was, well, exactly like a regular Sanders Sides episode. Sure, there were some jokes here and there, but the tone of the episode was no lighter than the last Sanders Sides episode. If anything DWIT felt lighter in comparison to this one.
Which leads me to ask, what the heck happened?
Part Two: Literally the Same Show
At this point in time, we’ve only had two episodes of Asides. Usually, I try to hold off my judgment of a series until I’ve had at least one other episode to see if my original criticisms still stand.
To be fair, I did think Flirting With Social Anxiety was a step in the right direction. More comedy, a lighter tone, yes. Perfect. But again, just like with Are There Healthy Distractions? This episode quickly dove right back into the angst pool, and just like ATHD it was a pretty long episode, clocking in at almost 25 minutes.
Not only that but again, both FWSA and ATHD don’t feel any different from the episodes we’ve been getting in Sanders Sides.
1. They’re just as angsty.
2. Roughly the same length as Sanders Sides episodes.
3. Take about just as long to produce.
4. Contain a lesson to be learned.
Which, okay, you can have lessons in lighter shows too, but we’re already getting that in Sanders Sides and Sanders Asides was described as, well, being less plot heavy. Yet so far both episodes are still tied in with the main plot.
ATHD deals with the aftermath of DWIT, not directly but it’s pretty obvious that the whole thing with Virgil’s reveal at the end of that episode is being addressed in the background. Which, kind of takes away the impact of that ending, but I’ll get to that later.
Then FWSA takes place after Putting Others First and again, is dealing with things from that episode in the background. Again though, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It makes sense to see the characters dealing with things from past events.
So why is it a problem here? Because, again, Sanders Asides is meant to be a separate series, and all the subtext brought on from the episodes in Sanders Sides makes the plots in these two episodes confusing.
For example, I was perplexed during my first watch of FWSA because I couldn’t understand why the focus of the conflict was lying. I didn’t understand why Virgil and Roman came to the conclusion that Thomas’ reason for being unable to approach Nico was because he was lying to himself, when both the title of the episode and what we were shown points more to, well, social anxiety being the problem.
(Quick note: One could argue that this was done purposefully to have Virgil putting the blame on Janus since he doesn’t like him and wouldn’t want to admit that he was the one responsible, but this series has had a bad habit of favoring Virgil in the past so until we get more answers I’m gonna leave this on the backburner)
It didn’t help that I had no idea when this episode was meant to take place in the timeline, and I originally thought it could take place a bit after season two since Roman and Virgil seemed to be doing better, but more on them later.
All of this bugged me until I found out that FWSA takes place after POF, and after watching the live stream that followed and getting some more context, the lying thing made a bit more sense, but the fact that I was as confused as I was just caused more frustration to build up. And I wasn’t the only one who got thrown off by the “Lying is wrong” message of FWSA so I had to ask again, why was this episode a Sanders Asides when apparently, you need information from the last Sanders Sides episode in order to understand it?
So you’re telling me, that the second episode in what is supposed to be a separate series that isn’t meant to be a part of the main plot, is now integral to the plot of the main story you’re telling in what is, as you have said, a separate show? How does that make any sense?
Okay, one could argue that Thomas getting a love interest doesn’t really fit with the current storyline that’s going on in Sanders Sides, and that is a fair point. The problem with that is, FWSA takes place right after Putting Others First.
You all remember what happened at the end of that episode, right?
Part Three: Intrusive Plots
At this point we’ve all become rather accustomed to the long waits in between videos, it’s nothing new to us, and for the most part they haven’t done anything to harm the current plot of Sanders Sides. Sure, the length of time between videos can cause people to lose interest, but for the most part the tone of the last three episodes of Sanders Sides hasn’t differed much and the story flow is still going along smoothly.
Let’s start with Selfishness vs Selflessness, which is the episode that sets up the big climax for season two. It’s still got its jokes and funny moments, but the overall tone is far more serious than previous episodes have been. This carries on into DWIT where Thomas has been so stressed out lately that he’s begun to have trouble with his intrusive thoughts.
Virgil even gives a pretty good summary of Thomas’ current mental state: “He recently realized he’s a bigger liar than he thought he was, he doesn’t understand himself, he’s committed to skipping a big callback, and he’s sleep-deprived. So yeah, he feels like a piece of dirt who has no control over his life.”
And all that was a direct result of the ending of SVS, despite DWIT not being the direct follow up to that episode the two are still intertwined. Remember that for later.
DWIT ends with the long awaited reveal of Virgil having been a “Dark Side.” Even though the majority of the fandom had figured it out by as early as Can Lying Be Good? That didn’t take away from the emotional gut punch that this scene was and it’s one of my favorite moments from the series. I may have to make a whole post breaking that scene down but what matters is that this scene was a turning point for Virgil’s character.
We’ve seen him trying to hide the truth from Thomas ever since Janus and Remus started popping up, and there were close calls with both of them nearly revealing it themselves and continuously dropping hints to Thomas. Only for Virgil to admit it to Thomas himself, and leave before Thomas can even say a word.
We don’t know for sure how Thomas is feeling in this moment, but it’s clear he’s been shaken by this. He doesn’t really have a lot of time to process it before he remembers to acknowledge the audience and close out the video.
This comes up again once we finally get to the monster of an episode that is POF, the follow up to SVS that everyone had been waiting over a year for. Right away we see that Patton and Roman will be at the forefront of this discussion with Logan popping up every now and then, but who doesn’t show up in this episode despite having played a role in SVS?
Virgil.
He’s nowhere to be seen and his absence is definitely felt. Why wouldn’t he be part of this discussion? He was there in SVS and had a lot to say on the matter, he was even part of the decision to choose the wedding over the callback! So why wasn’t he there?
Well, just look at the ending of DWIT and there’s your answer. Of course he isn’t about to show his face after that. Not when Thomas is already under so much stress already and he isn’t sure how Thomas will react to seeing him-
*insert random voice whispering off to the side*
Wait, Virgil has seen Thomas since DWIT? When?
*whispers continue*
Oh, right, they interacted in Sanders Asides. How did that go again?
*whispers explain*
Huh? Thomas said he’s cool with Virgil despite revealing that he’s been hiding something from him this whole time? That “something” being the fact that Virgil was once considered part of the others that were currently making Thomas’ life miserable?
*whispers confirm*
Really? They’re both okay with each other now? Well, good for them.
So wait, then why didn’t Virgil show up in POF? He was there during the first discussion and honestly he’d have more of a reason to show up than Logan who wasn’t really present at all in SVS.
*whispers explain*
He just wasn’t need there? Hm, alright. Guess that makes sense…
Well okay, Virgil and Thomas are on good terms once POF rolls around, Virgil isn’t present during the conversation because he isn’t needed and I suppose his presence would make things worse. Especially once Janus revealed himself, he wouldn’t allow him to get a word in. Even though Janus could probably silence him but I digress.
Fast forward towards the ending of POF, remember when I said to remember how SVS and DWIT were connected? Well DWIT is just as important to POF, acting as a bit of bridge between to the two episodes.
Tumblr media
Janus brings up Remus (both directly and indirectly) twice in this episode.
First here:
Notice how Roman’s breakdown is already being foreshadowed here, the camera focusing on him while “Logan” says this isn’t an accident.
The second time Remus is brought up is at the very end after Janus has revealed his name:
“Oh, Roman thank God you don’t have a mustache. Otherwise between you and Remus, I wouldn’t know who the evil twin is.”
(No I am not posting screenshots of this scene I already got emotional over the last one)
As we saw at the end of DWIT, Roman does not have a good relationship with is brother. So much so that when Thomas refers to Remus as such, Roman creates a different analogy that compares Remus to a mirror, reflecting everything Roman doesn’t want to be.
Roman desperately wants to distance himself from Remus, not wanting anything to do with him. We’ve only gotten a glimpse of just how far this loathing goes, and part of that comes from Roman finally breaking down after being told by Janus that if it wasn’t for a mustache there’d be no difference between him and Remus.
This shook Roman more than anything else in the show has so far, moreso than him being the one to decide that Thomas should give up the callback. He was the one that pushed Thomas to make that decision, believing it was the noble thing to do, only for it to only make Thomas feel worse and then be told by Janus that his “noble sacrifice” was all for nothing.
Janus, the one who had been supporting Roman throughout SVS, buttering him up and encouraging him to go after his dream, told him that his sacrifice was worthless. Then to top it all off Janus admits what he did and brushes it off as a joke. He doesn’t apologize to Roman, leaving him in the dust, then when Roman responds by laughing at his name he’s shot down even lower.
And when he looks to Thomas and Patton for help, for answers, anything.
They stay silent.
Patton tries to reassure him, telling Roman that they love him, but he doesn’t believe it. He sinks out, and that’s the last we see of him.
Selfishness vs Selflessness, Dealing With Intrusive Thoughts, and Putting Others First are three of the biggest (and dare I say most important) episodes in the series. The three almost act like a trilogy, with POF leading to something bigger, the season finale. Which will be culmination of all three of these episodes.
We’ll be seeing Virgil’s reaction to Janus having been accepted by Patton and facing his own past as a “Dark Side.” Then we’ll find out what has become of Roman after he disappeared at the end of POF, and how it now affects his relationship with Thomas.
*whispers return and begin to whisper*
I’m sorry what?
*whispers repeat*
Virgil already knows about Janus getting somewhat accepted? Well okay I guess he would, wish we could have seen his reaction to that but oh well, no big deal. At least we got the Roman and Thomas confrontation to look forward to.
*whispers whisper*
Roman has already interacted with Thomas since POF? When?!
*whisper*
In FWSA? Oh yeah, how did that go again? It was super awkward right? Since Roman doesn’t really trust that Thomas loves or values him?
*whisperly whisper*
They get along just fine as if nothing happened?
*whispersty*
It looks like he might still be upset with him since he’s being a bit passive aggressive?
*whisper*
Can’t really tell because the three are too busy trying to talk to a cute guy at the mall?
Okay, I guess that all makes sense…
Looks like Roman and Virgil still aren’t on the best terms with Thomas but are able to push that aside to help him talk to this handsome stranger, and hey, it worked! Thomas now has a boyfriend! Just look at Roman and Virgil at the end, they’re both so happy with Thomas!
Looks like now they can focus on this new chapter in their life and leave the events of POF behind them. I mean, now that Roman and Virgil seem pretty cool with Thomas it would just feel weird to suddenly have them angry with him again, wouldn’t it?
Part Four: The Problem
Sanders Asides was originally described as being a series separate from the main storyline of Sanders Sides. Promising us shorter, less complicated episodes to give us a little something in between the longer, heavier episodes in Sanders Sides. This was a great idea that ended up falling apart the moment it began.
When I was going through SVS, DWIT, and POF I mentioned that the three of them felt like a trilogy. All three of them link together to tell one bigger story, and on their own they get the job done. They set up the season finale perfectly to the point where you have an idea of what to expect and what to look forward to.
The main things being the aftermath of Virgil’s reveal and Roman’s breakdown, which would most likely cultivate in them teaming up against Janus. This would also involve Virgil coming to terms with his past and Roman having to face Remus.
Of course, none of this has been officially confirmed, but given everything we’ve seen up to this point it just makes sense.
The story for season two is nearly complete, all we’re missing is the conclusion.
Then Sanders Asides showed up and threw everything off course. What was supposed to be its own thing crept into a story that was already (for all we knew) set up and being put into place.
We were told that the Asides wouldn’t do anything to disrupt the flow of Sanders Sides, yet it’s been confirmed that there will be one or two more episodes of Asides before we get the season finale.
Why? Why are these episodes necessary when everything was set to move forward after POF? If these episodes are that important that they absolutely have to be made before the finale then why are they simply not part of the main series?
You could say “Well they’re not directly tied to the main plot, that’s why.” But need I remind you that Asides as a concept was just intriduced after DWIT came out? These episodes were written specifcally for Asides, which unless I’m wrong means that they were just added into the main story with no planning whatsoever.
FWSA honestly feels like it should have been the start of season three, something that should have waited to be introduced after season two wrapped up because it’s just too much.
We already have so much to unpack from SVS, DWIT, and POF now we also have a new love interest on top of that?
Virgil and Thomas’ resolution doesn’t even feel all that special because it wasn’t talked about directly between them. Thomas was indirectly letting Virgil know they were still okay, so what does that leave for us? All that build up about Virgil being a “Dark Side” only for it to be brushed over like it was nothing, and this happened in an Asides episode, not even in the main series.
It also makes Virgil’s absence in POF confusing when they had already set up the perfect reason for him to be absent in DWIT, but according to the first episode of ATHD Virgil and Thomas are okay with each other. Sure, Virgil being there might have made things worse but at that point everyone was making things worse.
We no longer have a confrontation between Thomas and Roman to look forward to because in FWSA we see them interacting as normal. Even the passive agressiveness isn’t anything new to Roman and really, it all just sounds super petty which he had been known to behave like that even when nothing is seriously wrong. Not only that Roman is overjoyed at the end, having finally gotten something he desperately wanted, the happy ending he deserved.
All that’s left for him is to fave his feelings towards Remus, but what would even happen there?
The problem with Asides isn’t the quality of the episodes, FWSA is actually one of my favorite episodes. The problem with Asides is that the team is taking what should have been something small and turning it into a far too elaborate for what its original purpose was: To give us more lighthearted content to enjoy in between the waits for the heavier episodes.
Instead it just feels like they’re adding onto something that really didn’t need adding on to, creating more work for themselves when it just isn’t necessary, and that worries me.
Final Thoughts
Honestly, it’s hard for me to make all these judgments when no one has any idea what the finale is going to be like. And usually, the team is able to excede my expectations and create something amazing.
But with all these new Asides episodes that feel like they’re just being crammed in at the last second, it makes me wonder how the rest of the series will go if they continue down this road.
Season two started September 1st, 2017, it is now January 3rd, 2021. Throughout season two the production of episodes became more elaborate, and there have been complications that arose from trying to make these videos as a result that sent production screeching to a halt. And on top of that, these Sanders Asides have been added to create even more work for Thomas and the team.
I don’t understand why they’d do this to themselves when it’s already become more difficult than ever to make videos in general, not just Sanders Sides.
We were offered something simple that would have satisfied everyone during the difficult times, only to be given something that honestly, wasn’t even needed. I do appreciate Thomas trying to get us more content, but I don’t think he or the team realizes just how content we’d all be with just a five minute video of the characters we love just doing something as simple as hanging out and having fun, especially with how dark things have become all around us.
We don’t always have to be watching these characters struggle, sometimes we just need to see them be genuinely happy.
(Thanks to everyone who took time to read this monster of a post, I did not mean for it to get this long but it’s been dwelling on my mind for a while and I wanted to make sure I got out everything I wanted to say. Again, this is all just a personal opinions and you are not obligated to agree with me. If you have an objecting opinion I would not mind hearing it but please keep any discussions civil.)

Remus spooking logan with threats to- uh oh, tiggle him~
Fandom: Sanders Sides
Word Count: 969
Ship: None
Characters: Ler!Remus, Lee!Logan, Roman, Patton, Virgil, Janus
Warnings: Deceit, Remus, Tickles
A/N: You know, I think the whole "Nothing gets past the tickle monster" Thing is gonna become that thing that I just do and that's how you know it's me. Hope you like the story!
Talking is Easy
It had started out as playful banter one day. But his reaction to it, it was priceless. So, he did what anyone would do. Continue.
"I'll tickle you if you don't give me a jar of Crofters!"
"Stop working so we can DO something! Or else... I'll tickle you!"
"I'm gonna tickle you!" Remus says, having fun teasing the normally stoic side. The poor man's reaction was adorable. A bright pink flush crept into his face, while he tried so desperately to hide it without looking suspicious. Stuttering over his words, he usually just went to his room to cool down for a bit.
But today he was acting just a bit strangely.
Logan woke up in a good mood. He felt a desire, butterflies in his stomach. But what could he possibly desire? Remus' words ran through his heads.
"Tickle, tickle, tickle!"
Oh, no.
If Logan even saw Remus today, he knew the Lee mood would get so much worse. Not to mention the teasing that he's been doing for however long it's been. He groans. If he goes to breakfast, he might see Remus. If he doesn't, Patton will worry and force him to leave his bedroom, and probably see Remus.
The logical side gets up and goes to breakfast, which happened to be waffles.
Logan has sat down and started eating before he witnessed a very rambunctious dark side enter the room.
"Morning everyone! What are we having for breakfast today? Ooh! Pancakes with abs!" Logan then sees a very tired looking Deceit walk through the doorway. Been there before. The Duke gobbles down his waffles and runs out the room, like a child on Christmas morning running to see their presents.
"How does he have so much energy all. The. Time?" Deceit whines, laying his head on the table. Logan, feeling sympathy for him, took care of his dishes and went to find the Duke.
"Why, hello there, Lo-Lo!" Remus says.
"That... isn't how you sit on a couch." He had sat himself on the top of the sofa, leaning against the wall behind him, feet on the cushions.
"Sure it is! Sit with me Logan!"
"How do you have so much energy?"
"Oh, simple! You just steal Janus' energy drink, replace it with water, and boom, now you have energy! Why, are you in the mood to steal, Lo?"
"No, I'm not. Merely curious, was all." Logan starts to walk away.
"Looogan!" Remus whines. "Sit with me! Or I'll tickle you!" Logan's face started to burn.
"Talking is easy, but doing is harder." Remus practically jumped off the couch.
"C'mere, Logan!" He called as a chase ensued. Logan never acted like that normally. Normally, he'd stutter a little, and then just leave the room. Today, he didn't do that. Strange.
Logan made it back to the kitchen table before Remus could catch him and hid behind Patton.
"What's going on, kiddo?" Patton asks, not opposed to shielding Logan from Remus.
"Come here, Lo!" Remus taunts, moving closer.
"No." Logan moves away.
"Remus." Deceit says sternly, ready to put up with his tomfoolery for the day. "Stop chasing Logan."
"Oh come on, Jan. He wants it! Don't you, Lo-lo?"
"No." Logan couldn't help the blush that rose on his cheeks.
"I'm so confused." Virgil says quietly.
"What's going on here?" Roman asks.
"Oh, I'm just going to tickle him!" The Duke answers.
"Really? Is that what this is all about?" Patton asks, directed towards Logan and Remus.
"Of course-" Logan saw an opening while Remus was answering Patton, and ran towards his room. "LOGAN!" Remus following not too far behind.
"Well, now I'm interested." Virgil says.
"Come on then! Let's go watch!" Roman jogs to catch up with them, Virgil close behind. Janus followed them silently, Patton left to clean the kitchen and bake some cookies.
"NO!"
"Yes!" The Duke yelled after Logan. They ran into some room, without an exit. It took Logan only a few seconds to realize his mistake, the Duke guarding the only door, the one they came in through.
"Uh... Now Remus. I-I'm sure we can talk about this, yeah?"
"Logan, you challenged me."
"I did not! I merely said, talking is easy, doing is- Oh." Remus stalked closer and Logan extended his arms, keeping distance between them. "No!"
"Yes!" Before Logan could comprehend, Remus tackled him and had him pinned on the floor.
"Remus! Get off!"
"No! But, I will do this!" His hands turn into claws, absolutely wrecking Logan's sides.
"ACK! No! RemuS!" Logan fights the wobbly smile that's already on his face, the giggles bubbling up quickly. His hands fly to the Duke's wrists, trying to push him off, unsuccessful.
"Oh, did you want me to move down here?" He teases, massaging his hips. Logic's head falls backwards, giggles streaming out of him uncontrollably.
"Nahahahahaha! Dohohohon't!"
"Awe, why not, Lo?"
"Ihihihit!"
"Tickles? Yeah, that's kinda the point." Remus moves up to Logan's ribs, scratching the spaces in between the bones.
"Nohohohahahaha! Rehehehemuhuhus!" Logan laughs, kicking his legs. He was becoming weaker by the second, the tickling too much to bear. Remus continued to switch between different tickle spots, keeping Logan on his toes. All Logan could do was laugh, which eventually became silent.
"Alright, that's enough." Roman intruded, pulling Remus off and smacking his hands away.
"Noooo!" The Duke whined as he watched Logan curl into a ball.
"Well, if you're done, I totally don't think that Patton's made some cookies." Janus says, scaring everyone but Remus, who's used to him seemingly popping up out of nowhere. Virgil helped Logan up, still a little giggly, while Roman walked with Remus. They all entered the kitchen, seeing as the cookies were on the stove cooling down.
"Where did Patton go?" Roman asks.
"Nothing gets past the tickle monster."

The crown and the queer. (Chapter 3)
Previous | next | masterlist
Summary: Roman’s life takes a turn for the worse when he’s convicted of magic and sentenced to death. But when Prince Logan saves his life, a lot of feelings are stirred. Roman is grateful for the save, but he knows his life will never be the same again.
Word count: 2316
Pairings: Logince, Thomico
Characters: Logan, Roman, Patton, Virgil, Janus, Remus, Thomas, Nico.
Triggers: Talk of arrest, talk of dungeons, anxiety, talk of being killed/executed, death in a backstory
Authors note: Apologies for the late chapter! Things have been very busy in my real life. I’m going on vacation in a week so if the next chapter isn’t out by then it may be a little bit 😅😅 don’t worry though! It’ll be very interesting to make up for time ;)
Roman looked around at the castle halls as they walked. Everything was so.. fancy. “So- uh- uhm- your majesty?” He asked nervously.
“Yes, Roman?” Logan asked, not even looking at him.
“What exactly do you plan to do with me?” He asked softly, voice laced with nervousness.
“Well… as I stated before, I’m getting you a change of clothes. After that we will talk a bit about your arrest.”
“Wh-what about it your majesty?”
Logan finally glanced over at him. “I do find it odd that you were arrested under false pretenses. And that no one before me thought to investigate the shaky evidence.”
Roman swallowed nervously. “After I was suspected of magic, I didn’t get much of a trial. I was immediately thrown in my town's jail until the Royal Guard arrived and took me to the dungeons. No one cared if the evidence was shaky or not, they just cared about killing a sorcerer.”
Logan frowned a bit more. “I do apologize, Roman. I wish I would’ve gotten you free sooner and saved you from needless nights in the dungeon.”
“It’s- it’s fine. It’s in the past now, sire. I will recover,” Roman said quickly, he didn’t want the prince to be upset.
Logan just nodded, and they walked the rest of the way in silence.
Roman looked around at the room as they entered. It was mostly empty, besides a rack full with clothes and a fold out privacy wall.
“I wasn’t sure your exact size or style, so I made sure to have a variety of things,” Logan said simply. “You can change behind the wall,”
“Thank you, your majesty. You’ve done so much for me already, I don’t know how to repay you,”
Logan looked down at him. “You have no need to repay me. This is the least I can do after my men made a mistake that almost cost you your life.”
“Truly sire, I understand,” He whispered softly. Logan was so neutral, it was impossible to tell whether he was upset or not. So Roman was in overdrive to keep him happy.
“Still, I will make sure a mistake like that is to never happen again.” Logan said firmly.
“Thank you, sire,” Roman picked out a simple red shirt and beige pants. He went behind the privacy wall and began changing.
“Of course, Roman. It’s my duty as prince to make sure all my people stay safe. You were almost an oversight and I give you my deepest apologies.”
Roman looked up in surprise, the prince was apologizing to him? “You did nothing wrong, sire, I am alright. You had no way of knowing,”
“Thank you, Roman. I was hoping that as one last treat, you could join me and my father for dinner? My father shares my regret of what happened to you. He would be fairly happy if he could apologize in person,”
Roman paused, a dinner with the prince and king? Sounded terrifying. “It’s really not that big of a deal-“
“His majesty cares deeply for his people, he at least wants to meet you,” Logan said simply.
“I don’t understand why the two of you care so much..” Roman mumbled honestly.
Logan glanced at him. “Because of our mistakes you almost lost your life. It’s quite possible that we have ruined your reputation, magic is a serious crime. Not everyone will be quick to believe you truly are innocent,” he looked down.
“I will manage, sire. I always do,” Roman hugged himself slightly.
-
The next morning, Roman woke up at the crack of dawn. He yawned and stretched as he got out of bed.
He was able to ask for more clothes last night and was able to change now. He pulled on a loose white shirt and a red jacket with stockings. He quickly went over to Logan’s room and knocked softly.
“Coming, coming,” Logan called back, sounding tired. After a moment he opened the door. The prince did not seem very prince-like at this moment. His hair was a mess and he was in nothing but a t-shirt and boxers. He wasn’t even wearing glasses.
“Oh- am I too early?” Roman asked, he’d known the prince for only a few days. But he never imagined seeing the prince like this.
Logan blinked and looked up at him. A slight blush came to his cheeks. “No- you’re just in time. I- I just slept in a bit late. My apologies. Come right inside,” he let Roman in.
Roman looked around in surprise. This room was beyond fancy. It was 5x the size of his bedroom, with much natural light and high ceilings. There was elegant furniture everywhere, a king sized bed, it was truly a room fit for a prince.
“Is something wrong?” Logan asked, pulling on a pair of pants.
“No- it’s just- I’ve never seen something like this, it’s so fancy,” Roman mumbled, the room just radiated.
“Oh.. yeah.. I guess so,” Logan said softly. “Anyways, we can start with you ironing my tunic,”
“Uh- what?”
“You’re my servant now. This is your job,” Logan glanced at him, putting up his elegant walls again. “You do know how to iron things right?” He raised an eyebrow.
“Yes your majesty, of course I do,” Roman said quickly.
“Good. Get to it.” Logan took off his t-shirt and began looking through his closet. He pulled out a dark blue tunic and laid it down on the table.
Roman blushed darkly at how casually Logan walked around shirtless. “Yes- right away sir,” he quickly heated the iron over the fire then began ironing out the tunic.
“Just be careful, move fast with the iron or you risk burning the fabric,” Logan pulled on a white button up.
“What was that?” Roman paused, looking up at Logan.
“I said be careful. You can’t-“ Logan looked over at him. “Roman- no! Take the iron off!” He quickly went over.
Roman blinked, he pulled the iron off. There was a spot where the fabric obviously got burned. “Oh- Prince Logan, I-I’m so sorry-“
Logan stayed silent for a second. He took a deep breath. “It’s- it’s fine. It’s just a tunic… my favorite tunic... I’ll just fetch another and iron it myself,” he said softly, walking back to his closet.
Roman looked down at the tunic, then back up at Logan.
“Why don’t you go dispose of the tunic, then just wait for me to finish ironing this.” He went over to the table again then paused. “Wait- the burn… where- how-?”
“It’s an old method my mom used, able to basically reverse singes on clothes,” Roman said softly “The burn wasn’t as bad as it looked, so I was able to fix it, sire”
“How did you do it?” Logan asked in surprise.
“Family secret, I can’t say sire,” Roman smiled a little.
“Hmm, alright. Well thank you, Roman. I will finish ironing it, can you go fetch my belt?”
Roman nods, quickly getting it. “Here you go sire,”
“…like I told you, you don’t constantly have to call me ‘sire’ and ‘your majesty’. I cannot stand the formalities,” Logan mumbled.
“My apologies,” Roman said quickly, he didn’t want to stop using formalities with Logan.
“It’s fine,” Logan said softly. “Do whatever you’d like, I guess.” He mumbled softly.
“R-right,” Roman said softly, he handed Logan his belt. “So- uh- do you have any plans for today, sire?”
“I have an important meeting at noon, but that is it. The rest of the day I’ll spend training you,”
Roman tensed a little. “J-just me and you? Alone?”
Logan looked at him. “Yes, that’s how this works.” He said simply. “Sometimes we’ll be out in the halls or around the knights and Nobles, but for the most part it will be one on one training,”
Roman tensed more, “O-oh! That’s- that’s fun!” He forced a smile. Being alone with the prince all day? Sounds terrifying.
Logan looked at him confusedly. “Yes… I suppose so..? I’m glad you find this so enjoyable.”
“Yeeep, fun as can be,” Roman mumbled softly, keeping up his smile.
They continued training for hours. Logan didn’t go easy on him and wouldn’t allow him any breaks. Roman polished Logan’s armor, cleaned his floors, sharpened his sword, fetched his breakfast, and more. It never seemed to end. Roman was relieved when Logan had to go off his meeting. Virgil was also going to be attending the meeting so Roman had to stay in his room alone.
Roman flopped down on his bed, he was so tired and it was only noon. He wished he could just quit and go home.
A small knock on his door brought him away from his rest. “Who is it?” Roman called nervously.
“It’s patton! Can I come in?”
Roman relaxed and smiled. “Yeah, of course!”
Patton opened the door with a bright smile. He had a small plate in his hands. “Hey kiddo! I heard logan was in some meeting so I figured you were here,”
“Yeah, Virgil had to attend it as well so I didn’t have anyone to stay with me,” Roman chuckled. “Wait- is that what you’re doing?”
“Well… Virgil did ask me to keep an eye on you, but I would’ve come by either way” Patton smiled warmly. “And I brought cookies!” He held out the plate to Roman.
Roman smiled happily “Oh you are the best!” He took one then flopped back into bed with a dramatic sigh.
He giggled softly. “Has Logan been working you hard?”
“Yes, he insisted we not waste time since I didn’t work yesterday. I haven’t had a moment to catch my breath. I don’t mean to speak ill of him, he just really needs to understand limits!” Roman huffed softly.
Patton looked at Roman then sat down next to him. “Well he wants you to quit,”
“He- what??” Roman frowned, sitting up.
“A few years ago Logan had a servant who was his best friend. They were inseparable for years. But then it was discovered that Logan’s friend knew magic and he was immediately taken into custody and sentenced to death,” Patton frowned. “After that Logan refuses to accept another servant. He shut himself off and shut everyone out. It isn’t your fault, Logan just… it’s complicated,”
Roman blinked “oh… I- I had no idea…”
Patton smiled sadly. “Logan was so happy back then, but now…” he sighed “I think you remind him of his friend, it’s why he wants you gone. You remind him too much of the past. But he can’t fire you because the king wants him to give you a chance. Just don’t take it personally, ok kiddo? And don't mention that I told you this,” he whispered.
Roman nodded. “Yes, of course,” he looked down as he processed this information. A part of him desperately wanted to prove himself to the prince, now more than ever. He’d just have to work extra hard to satisfy the prince.
It was a couple of hours before Logan came and fetched Roman. They got right back to work. Roman tried his best to go above and beyond with whatever Logan asked of him.
At the end of the day, Roman was beyond exhausted.
“Goodnight Roman, today you have done… adequate. I look forward to tomorrow.”
That single comment caused romans confidence to waver. Logan didn’t seem impressed in the slightest! He seemed just as annoyed as ever! “Thank you, sire. I look forward to seeing you as well.”
Logan nodded and closed his door, then he went over to his closet and began changing into his night clothes. He moved slowly, his brain was full of thoughts. Roman seemed like a decent person, very different from the other servants he’s had. He also seemed a lot like him.
Logan shook his head, trying not to think about it. He took a deep breath and went over to his bed. He laid down and closed his eyes, forcing himself to relax enough for sleep.
-
Things continued like this for about a week. The more monotone and plain Logan was, the harder Roman worked to impress him.
In romans mind, if he could make Logan happy just once, he could do anything. It was a challenge for sure, but a welcome one.
Logan had quite honestly been looking for reasons to fire Roman. But Roman never gave him a chance. Sure he made mistakes, but he was trying so hard. Logan couldn’t help but respect that. A small part of him enjoyed Roman’s company, even though Roman was usually tense and nervous, there were little moments where the true Roman would shine through. It was something quite enjoyable.
Roman was accompanying Logan to the market. Logan really wanted to be alone, but Virgil was busy and he didn’t want Roman to be left alone.
Roman looked around curiously, he hadn’t been to such a lively market before. There was a small one in his village, but this one was quite grand.
Logan looked down at his list. “Alright, Roman. It will be quickest if we split up,” he tore the list in half and handed Roman a pouch full of coins. “You get everything there, and give me all the money left over. I will know if you have stolen anything,” he said seriously.
Roman was slightly hurt that Logan still had so little trust for him. “I wouldn’t dream of stealing from you sire,” he said honestly. He looked down at his list then veered off from Logan to get the things.
Logan watched as Roman walked away. A part of him was hesitant to leave Roman alone, he knew that danger still lurked for the young servant. But he needed space away from the latter, Roman had been by his side all day for a week and Logan had missed being alone with his thoughts.

I saw you were taking requests and i wanted to send one in!
Can i request Remus angst, where his intrusive thoughts are getting really bad and he thinks that everyone is going to abandon him like roman (the split) and virgil, and then Janus comforts him and it ends with janus holding remus and comforting him?
Please and thank you!
You're awesome!!
This kinds turned into fluff, oops. Like angst-fluff. Also thank you for the request! This was a fun one b/c it's not something that ever would have occurred to me to try to write, and it was interesting to take a character like Remus, who feels very sure of himself (imo) and explore what kind of self-doubts he might have
I ended up leaning on my own experiences w intrusive thoughts and also that like Aro Fear that all your friends are gonna pair off and forget about you because That's What Happens
Anyway! I hope you like it!
Remus and Janus are QPPs, your honor
Unhealthy behaviors were hard to gauge with Remus. His being quiet was not always a red flag, nor was his tendency toward sudden bursts of energy. Even his self-soothing behaviors were a constant, and did not necessarily mean anything was amiss.
He was quiet this morning, chewing on his knuckles and staring at Janus, who was drinking his coffee and pretending to enjoy the silence.
Remus was agitated. He bit down on his bent index finger and tried not to think. Unfortunately for him, being Intrusive Thoughts meant experiencing intrusive thoughts, and no amount of coping mechanisms could make them go away. Much like himself, they simply demanded attention, repeating like propaganda, over and over and over until they became the truth. It wasn't self doubt and it wasn't fear. It simply was.
Today, the manifest truth that drove his front teeth together against the barrier of his finger was this: Janus was going to leave him. Roman left, after all, and Virgil left, and Patton and Logan wanted nothing to do with him. Not that Remus wanted anything to do with them, but if he ever did…
So it stood to reason that Janus was next.
The inevitability of it lodged in his chest like so many knives, until he was certain he could see them sticking out of his chest and-- Ah, they were there. Big, ugly butcher knives. Janus hadn't noticed yet, too busy with his newspaper (an imperfect facsimile of one Thomas had seen a few days ago in a coffee shop).
What would mornings be like without Janus? What would Remus do without anyone? Preemptive loneliness washed over him; the knives faded out and he started to go with them, gradually turning transparent in his armchair. Loneliness. That great certainty, that big, ugly fact.
What the fuck was he going to do without Janus? With no one to listen? How much time did he have left? How long before it all went away?
Now it was fear, now it was despair, now it was an utter lack of any sort of hope for the future, because it was going to happen, it was going to happen and there was nothing he could do about it, and it didn't matter if it was now or a year from now because there was no happy ending--
A few cold tears snaked down his cheeks. Stupid. Not shameful, but completely fucking stupid. He sniffled.
Janus put his newspaper down. Remus watched with blurred vision as his expression turned from curious to concerned and then stayed there, instead of reaching its usual sardonic terminus. "Um, Remus?"
It was hard to talk. Remus swallowed and made an effort. "What?"
"I don't know if you noticed, but you're crying."
"So?"
Janus cocked his head. "What do you mean 'so'?"
"So what?"
"Goodness, it's not like we're friends or anything. If you're upset, please keep it to--" Janus took a deep breath. "Look, if you're upset, you can talk to me about it. I want you to talk to me about it."
Remus accepted this with a nod, knowing full well it wasn't that simple. How could he make Janus understand? "I was just thinking about what it's going to be like when you leave, and… Well, I'm gonna miss you, that's all."
"When I leave?" Janus leaned forward, pressing his elbows on his knees so he could study Remus better. "Who said I was leaving?"
"Everyone else did," Remus said, trying for bravado. He got a few more tears instead, which he really should have seen coming. Remus was many things, but he was not a liar. "R-Roman went away, Virgil…" His voice broke. "I just…"
"Oh, come here." Janus got up. It was a difficult thing to jam two grown men into an armchair, but Janus was clever and arranged it somehow, so that Remus could rest his head on Janus' chest and get snot and tears all over his nice gray shirt. That was nice of him. "Remus, why are you mourning something that hasn't even happened?"
Sure enough, Janus didn't understand. "It's going to happen," Remus said. "I just know. It's-- I know it."
"Oh, come on, Remus." Janus pressed a kiss to the top of his head. "Where would I go? I don't like any of the others half as much as I like you."
"But--"
"But?"
Remus smiled through his tears and nuzzled into Janus' chest, leaving wet spots on his shirt. "I just made you say 'butt.'"
"There you are," said Janus, and the fondness in his voice was so undisguised, so genuine, that Remus found he had no choice but to believe in it. "I take it your brain is being mean to you today?"
"I guess," Remus said, because it was easier than arguing. He'd never been able to make Janus understand that the thoughts didn't always feel mean even if they were upsetting.
"How can I help?"
"Can we just stay like this?" Remus asked.
Janus ruffled his hair. "Of course. But you're not using my shirt as a tissue."
Remus wiped his eyes on Janus' shirt just to be contrary, and laughed when Janus jammed a whole fistful of tissues in his face. "Thank you," he said, shoving one of the tissues into his mouth and swallowing it for the joy in the shock value.
"I'm not going anywhere," Janus promised. "I'd like to see you try to get rid of me."

Sumarry: Janus try to decieve himself into a timeline where he can save his friends. He does not expect reality to offer him an opportunity to prove himself.
Word count: 3127
Characters: Janus Sanders, King creativity Sanders
Warnings: Sword fighting?? Idk please tell me if you think something else should be added here.
Author’s note: MY FIRST ONESHOT EVER COMPLETED! Yes! And the honor goes to @rondoel ‘s King!AU! ( @kingcreativityau ) :D Now: are the characters OOC in this? Most probably. Do I really care about it? Only a tiny bit. I only started to post Sanders Sides content here recently, but I’ve been a fan of the series for a few months now so I had time to read a lot of fic... however I’m still not sure on what I got wrong so if you have any criticism, positive or negative, please let me know! Lastly, this was at first supposed to be an animatic (on the song called ‘This is war’) but I have NO TIME to draw and lot of time to write so enjoy! When I do get time, I might try to animate a certain part of it that I don’t think I nailed that well in the fic. Anyway, I’ve been rambling for long enough. ENJOY!!!
-----------------------------------
Janus stood there, in the empty training room. Since King's return, he felt very conflicted, and he hated himself for it.
The king was merciless, he cursed Patton to make him look like a toddler, he removed Logan's vocal cords, he cursed Virgil into torturing himself into deadly downward spirals, and...
And he was very spiteful, he was angry... because he'd betrayed him.
Janus clenged his fist. He couldn't help but remember the look of betray and rage that his King gave him when he discovered his team-up with Logan. Those orange eyes that could burn him down on the spot. Those oh so intense eyes... Damn it, he was back at it again. This is over now. His king was gone. Now it was the King. The tyrant. The side who hurt his friends.
He was standing in the empty room, looking at his reflection by the mural mirror. His now half-half face looked so tired. Was he really this tired ? He was probably very very tired... but he'll rest later, as the memory of his most recent wound was still fresh in his head, replaying this utter humiliation, he just couldn’t sleep. Anger soon filled him up.
He could have tried to stop him. He could have tried to save his friends, and instead he just... froze. He just let it happen like he couldn't do anything. And he knew how to fight ! He knew how to defent himself for crying out loud ! He could've done something, and instead... Nothing ! He recalled the scene, bit by bit. How Logan stood at his left, how virgil was just behind, how the king was looming over them, despite being 10 feet away from them. He remembered every movement, every word, and every second of that moment like it was written in his metaphysical blood.
And in a second, it was like he was dragged back to this hell again.
And he would not let it happen a second time.
He summoned his cane and raised it up at the memory of King. His mind wandered off now. He had to imagine how he would've react. Would he summon his sword or take full creative control to just trap him ? He wanted to think he had a chance, so he chose the sword scenario.
And just like that, the imaginary fight was on. Step forward. Left. Right. Dodge. Go protect them. Put up a fight. He would have rushed toward the tyrant and aimed for the head, the sword would've get in the way and he could uses the top of his cane to project himself back to the group. Go. Dodge. Pare. Block and Dodge and Move fast and Dodge again and Block and pare and send it back. The world was spinning around him and the fight got more and more intense. He may have his eyes closed, but he knew perfectly where he was in the room, and he was completely in his daydream. Left and Right and Block again and Forward and Left and Block and backward and spin and swing the cane for it to stop only an inch away from the face of his enemy. He would have been a threat, and he would have been able to save his friends from the King.
He didn't expect, however, to be met with the actual King in front of him when he opened his eyes.
Janus' eyes widened and he immediately cursed himself for backing up. Great. He was all about putting up a fight and a second later, he was cowering. ‘Talk about blowing smokes.’ He at the very least kept his glare from fading away. He couldn't be scared of him. He couldn't show it. He was simply surprised... He had to make that a challenge for him, Deceit was not a side you could see right through, after all.
« You seem to have a quite... Interesting dancing style » King spoke, an almost mocking grin showing as he looked down at Janus. Crap. Did he knew ? Was he there the whole time ?
As the tyrant lift his hand, Janus snaps back into reality, setting his guard up and putting a stronger grasp on his cane. Only for the object to sudenly float in the air, shining with bright light and transforms into a sword that Janus grabbed back before it falls on the floor. This left only more confusion in the half-snake, confusion which turns into alert when he lifts his gaze back at the King only to be met with another blade. He jumps back.
« W... What ? » Janus was lost.
« Wouldn't you try and learn an acutal fighting technique ... » King's voice was composed, but also slightly amused at Deceit's confusion.
«... instead of the poor travesty I just witnessed ? » until it all vanished in favor of annoyance.
Janus tried to process the words as King switched his position for a dueling one. His sword in front of him, his torso on the side and his feet dug on the ground. Was he.... what ? What was happening ?? One thing sure was that he invited Janus to mirror his behaviour. And so he did, taking a deep breath, and standing still while carrying his sword to cross the others. And before he figured out what to do next, King took three blows and sent Janus' sword flying through the air and crashing on the ground.
« Whoa wHoa WHOA ! Hold on ! » Janus lifted his hands in defense and gulped as the blade of his enemy got dangerously close to his throat.
He then heard a chuckle, and the blade finally got away from his neck. « It was just too tempting. » He snapped his finger and the sword flew right back to Janus' hand, who was still confused.
« Alright, for real this time, I let you give the first blow. »
Janus hesitated, still not sure if the scene before him was really happening, but quickly composed himself. He came back to mirroring King's posture and came with a serious expression. He quickly analysed how he could start and how he could win the fastest. When he assumed to find a way to win quickly, he lifts his sword up and went for it.
Boy, was his assumption wrong.
He thought he'd move faster, but the moment the sword swingged on the left, King's weapon caught him off guard, and it only took two quick slays for Janus' to fly in the air again. He felt baffled and humiliated. And the amused smile from his opponent didn't boost his ego at the moment.
« How ? » He didn't understand. Even his instincts weren't nearly as fast as the King, and the tyrant didn't get the chance to train in years !
He only got an arrogant giggle in response before the sword flew back to Deceit's hand. Janus frowned deeper and dug his feet in the ground, ready to jump. King did not miss, nor cared for deceit's threat.
« Again. » He simply ordered. He only had to move his arm to be back to his initial position. Was there a point to it ? Or did his tyrant just liked to put him through this childish show of superiority ?
For some reason, Janus obeyed.
And lost.
Again.
« Try again. » the King ordered.
The other obliged.
After the 4th time the sword flew back into the yellow side, he had to face it : This was happening. King was training him to sword fight. And he just... accepted it ??? What ?? How was this happening ? Usually, he would try to bite back, make some remark, try to hurt him, but here he just... went along with it. And King seemed pleased with that. He looked...content. He looked satisfied with giving Janus private lesson. This moment...  against all odds... felt... not as bad as he expected.
The more they fought, the less cold the tyrant was, and the less tense they both get. King stopped trying to bring him to his knees and instead looked like he a professor, excited to give his student something to work on.
Of course, he would never admit it, but in this instant, in this moment of intimacy and challenge devoted from any animosity... It was calming, it was like a fresh wind coming after a heat wave of chaos, and the adrenaline that came from the fight was giving him enough energy to savour every second of it.
Wait.
No.
No no no no no.
He wasn't enjoying it. He wasn't enjoying it at all. He could not appreciate what was happening : the sadistic bastard was bellitling him and humiliating him right now ! And worst part is ? He couldn't even do anything about it ! Because King is so freacking good at sword fighting and Janus' main weapon has been turnd into a sword for crying out loud. There was no time to lust over past relationship !
And another game lost.
« I told you to pay attention to what was happening high up. Looking at my chest is not going to do much if you want to predict where or when I'm going to hit next. I thought you'd know that. »
« I was simply lost in another train of thought, I hope you could forg- »
DON'T.
FINISH
THIS WORD.
'You be submissive, god dammnit.' He thought to himself before clearing his throat and returning to his cunning voice. He had to keep his distance.
« I don't need you to tell me that. I was simply lost in thought. Do you really I am this much of an idiot ? »
« Well, you didn't prove me otherwise yet so. » He chuckled low and got ready for yet another one. « En garde. »
Even though he couldn't hide the joy he was feeling at the moment, he could mask it behind his usual calm appearance.
« And how many times are we going to do this ? » He asked, his tone playing between teasing and bored
«Until you get some actual fighting skills. » King answered, playing along.
« Ouch. I think I prefer the wounds caused by your sword. »
« Well then hurry up and grab your weapon. » Damn it. Why did they seem to get along of all sudden ?
« As you wish. This was merely a warm up. » he lied
« I do not doubt it any second. »
And just like that, the conversation became non-verbal again.
Truth be told, neither knew how long they've been fighting. Was it an hour ? Three hours ? 20 minutes ?
Truth be told, neither cared.
All janus knew is that he was getting better and better, almost becoming a challenge to the King , and the other side seemed glad to step up and fight with more intensity.
And both completely forgot to hide their excitement.
Janus started to tease king, even when he was clearly losing, and the other responded with as much sarcasm and complicity. The two glared at each other with malice and playfulness the whole time. And both couldn't help but smile.
And just like that, it felt as if they never left each other.
When he was younger, Janus and his king would play around with wooden swords, roleplaying like two ennemy seeking vengence in the most childish way. Janus sometimes would fake losing so he could see his king's proud smile which was worth losing 10 times again. His king would sometimes lose and janus would feel a feeling of acomplishment that was very strange to him, in a pleasant way. And at the end, they would most of the time lay down on the green grass and just talk about everything and anything.
And right now, he felt like he was playing with his king. Only the swords weren't made of wood anymore, and it was more professional. But still, it felt the same.
And it felt ...pleasant.
He could hear himself laugh just like when he was younger, and if he listened closely, he could feel king chuckle just like his king.
And it felt … nice.
From the talk, to the movement, both were on edge, calculating every move and waiting for an opportinity to strike. It was an amazing strategy game combined with pure raw strenght. And King's fighting style was both very classical and yet creative. He was very crafty and Janus only had to rival with his own tricks. They were in the moment, living fully the present.
And it felt...
And dear lord, it felt so, so good.
He could feel himself fly as he dodged, he could feel fire in his vein when he was about to strike down, he felt his head spinning, yet everything around him was so crystal clear, it was like a dance. A disturbing, aggressive, cold and passionate dance.
A dance...
They used to dance before.
His king and himself.
Most of the time, when they were done fighting, they would lay down on the grass. Most of the time.
Sometimes, he could have the biggest honor of all.
'Now, my dear, would you enjoy a waltz with me ?' his king offered his hand
-'I don't want to step on your foot again'
-'I told you you didn't hurt me ! Come now, it's not your job to be scared.'
despite his defensive approach, he adored those dances.
-'Alright, I'll dance with you. '
How did it go again ?
1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3.
Left, right, right, wait no, was it left again ?
1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3
step up, forward, step back, and one turn and another. His king would have his hand on Janus' shoulder and Janus would have his hand on his king's waist. And they would dance, and the music filled the air, and his king would have made a room just for them to dance.
1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3
Turn around, then left then back up.
1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3
Then caught in their trance
1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3
They would just spin around, and turn and spin and spin again and everything was  spinning around them and they could only see each other and the whole world was spinning and it was just them. Just the two of them.
And they would smile and they would laugh and everything was still spinning around them and it was blissfull, passionate, affectionnate and in they would join their hands once more and their finger would interlace and once their hands was only one thing, they would lift it in the air with bravery as a victory for their hapiness.
And he would lift his hand in the air, with his king.
And they would lift their hands, hold together, in the air.
And they would yell a victory choir.
King's sword fell on the ground.
And he had his hand on King's chest.
Oh lord, he was too close to King.
Their faces were only two inches apart.
And Janus visibly forgot how to breath.
King was staring with wide eyes, clearly not expecting Janus to send his sword flying nor getting this close. None of them dared move an inch, and none of them could breath.
What... what just happened ?
How could Janus get so caught up in his dreams that he erased whatever was happening in front of him ? And how did this stupid dance from years ago helped him beat the King to his game ? And how could he, despite everything,  try to search for his king's eyes in the tyrant that stood in front of him ?
Right now, the King's red and green eyes were  flickering into orange glimps and his look was just tearing Janus up from the inside. He looked ready to cut his throat open if he had his sword in hand.
And yet …
For only a moment, only for a single instant, did Janus find his King shining through the side in front of him.
Sadly, this bloom inside of Janus' heart got cut fast as thorns grapped him and pulled him far away from his The King, and before he realized what was happening, the thons just gripped tighter and tighter, making Janus unable to hide the jolt of pain.
He struggled, trying to get away from the grasp, but they only tightened and eventually, he stopped, gasping for air. He tried to look back at the tyrant, who was simply observing with a serious expression, the joy of the past moments seemingly dissapeared the moment Janus got too close. And now, he was back to being a threat. Without looking away, he move forward, with slow steps. Janus tried to manage a sentence but the pain was too high for him to form anthing coherent. Eventually, The King was in front of Janus, and the yellow side swore he was about to get killed right on the spot, but instead he just kneeled down, grapping back the sword that flew away.
Oh.
He got up and, with the other hand, brushed over the blade. Without looking away from it, he spoke : « You fought well. » He lift his eyes to meet Janus, struggling not to faint, and determined to look at him with rage. The corner of his lips twiched into the smallest of smirk and he turned back, opening the gap between the two.
And as the King took his steps, Janus' eyes widened, realizing what King was about to do.
'No.'
'No. Not again.'
'Don't leave. '
'Please'
'Don't leave me again. '
He turned into a snake to got away from the thorns and rushed towards him, ready to grip his cape. Anything. Anything but that. He was so close...
But the thorns got Janus back before he could make it.
He couldn't even hear his own grunts of pain. All he could listen to was the sound of footsteps, and a windblow that made King dissapear. Janus froze in place.
And the silence that grew in the room was deafening.
After what felt like an enernity, the thorns let go of Janus, who simply fell on his knees shaking. He hugged himself as hard as he could, and curled on himself.
He tried to fight back tears that wouldn't stop to threaten to fall.
And none of them ever left his eyes. Just like no wound ever left his heart.
------------------------- WHOOOOOO What a ride! This was really fun to write and the challenge of putting words on the visuals your head come up with is certainly something. Now, I hope you didn’t expect things for them to get better just like that, huh? ;) There is too much they need to discuss before being close to make peace, so that’ll have to wait! I have other ideas for those two so I’ll see if I get motivated to write it out. Hope you liked it!! :D

Valentine’s Day
words: 2868 universe: human au characters: virgil, roman, patton; mentions of remus, logan, janus pairings: romantic prinxiety, platonic moxiety, platonic DLAMPR, implied background romantic logicality warnings: none i can think of, just fluff on fluff on fluff a/n: happy late valentines day, everyone! i wanted to have this done on actual valentine’s day but executive dysfunction said no thank you. this fic is dedicated to my amazing girlfriend @katlikethesword. i still can’t believe how lucky i am to be your datemate, and i love you with all my heart. this is my first time writing a prinxiety fic this long, so i hope you like it <3
Virgil had never liked Valentine’s Day. As he often said, it was just another commercial holiday created for big corporations to take advantage of people’s relationships in order to make even more money. It was the same with holidays like Christmas and Halloween, but Valentine’s Day had always stood out to him as the worst of them all. He sometimes wondered if, deep down, he disliked this day in particular because he’d never had someone to spend it with.
That is, he didn’t, until he met Roman.
Virgil never would have guessed he’d fall for someone like Roman. The two had met through the internet, after joining a small Discord server for those who shared an interest in Steven Universe. The two held a sort of rivalry between them at first, arguing almost constantly to the point where the others would grow nervous when they noticed both of them online at once. They didn’t dislike one another, per se, but the fact that their opinions clashed a majority of the time led to conflict more often than not.
After some time— and convincing by the others— the two of them begrudgingly started to get along. Their arguments went from heated debates to playful bouts of banter. Virgil found himself growing fond of his eccentric friend, and began to see him as less annoying and self-absorbed. He instead grew to appreciate his sense of humor, and his eagerness to stand up for his beliefs, and his unrelenting loyalty to those he cared about.
Over time, Virgil’s feelings blossomed into something more than just platonic and he felt himself falling. It had terrified him at first— after all, he’d never had feelings like this toward anyone before. He finally came to terms with it after one fateful night, when a voice call lasted so long that the two of them had ended up falling asleep. After that, there was no turning back. After what felt like forever— in reality, a week— he finally opened up about his feelings, and somehow, by some miracle, Roman reciprocated them.
As a result, the two of them were now in a romantic relationship together. Virgil felt himself fall more and more in love every day. It was the simple things that made him special. Roman often sent him messages containing words of adoration and devotion, and he tagged his boyfriend in Tumblr posts that reminded him of their relationship, or of Virgil in general. Virgil had been hesitant to admit that he was in love with Roman, but he did so eventually. He couldn’t imagine loving anyone else.
Not everything was this easy, though. Roman lived thousands of miles away, too far to come and visit unless he was travelling with his family, which was unlikely considering how unappealing his home state was as a vacation spot and how unlikely it was for his parents to plan a trip there. All they could do was pine hopelessly as they waited until they could finally see one another. It wasn’t uncommon for Virgil to lose himself in daydreams of the day they could finally see each other, when they could finally hold each other, when they could finally be together. Roman sometimes joked that he’d expect the pining to die down when they got together, only for it to double once they actually did, and Virgil couldn’t help but agree. It was hard being so far from the person he cared about. All he wanted was to see his love, to be by his side, to be in his arms, even if only for a little while. Was that really too much to ask?
__
When he woke up on February 14, the first thing Virgil did was grab his phone and open Discord to message Roman. When he did, he’d been expecting his boyfriend to have sent him something, anything, but there was nothing. Maybe he’s not awake yet. He hoped that was it. gerard-gay: hey. happy valentine’s day. i miss you. After he sent it, Virgil lay back down, pulling the covers over himself and closing his eyes again. He stayed like that for a few minutes before stumbling out of bed and changing out of his pajamas. He wasted little time in changing into a purple t-shirt, his favorite hoodie, and a pair of dark gray sweatpants. With that done, he headed into the bathroom. He splashed water on his face, then dried it before taking out his makeup kit. He decided to go for a simple look today, complete with the black eyeshadow on his lower lid that he often wore. Satisfied, he left the bathroom and headed into the kitchen.
The first thing he noticed was that his parents weren’t sitting on the couch like they usually were. Panic surged through him as his eyes flitted around the room, looking for some kind of clue. His gaze fell on a bright pink sticky note on the counter. He came over to it and read it. We had to go pick something up. We’ll be home around 1pm. Love you! ~Mom and Dad Virgil sighed in relief. They hadn’t abandoned him after all. They could have told me beforehand, though. He glanced at the clock on the microwave. 8:49. Damnit, I got up too early. At least he had the house to himself for a while.
He made himself a cup of coffee and a bowl of cereal, got out his daily pills, and headed into the living room and set everything on the coffee table. He sat on the couch and turned on the TV, switching it to Netflix and putting on The Office. It wasn’t his favorite show, but it was better than eating in silence. As he ate his cereal, Virgil checked his notifications again. Nothing. He can’t still be asleep, can he? Even on the weekends, Roman was usually awake at around this time. He wasn’t ignoring him, was he?
Virgil soon finished his breakfast and grabbed a blanket from the back of the couch, swaddling it around himself. He stayed there for a while, occasionally having to venture out of his cozy cocoon to ensure Netflix that he was, in fact, still watching. As he watched, he kept an eye on his phone for any indication that Roman was alive and hadn’t grown bored of him.
Soon, he felt his phone buzz, and he nearly dropped it as he opened Discord to check the notification. To his disappointment, it wasn’t from Roman. It was instead from Patton, one of their mutual friends. happypappypatton: Happy palentine’s day!
Virgil couldn’t help but chuckle. gerard-gay: happy palentine’s day pat
happypappypatton: How’s your day so far?
gerard-gay: could be better
happypappypatton: Oh no! Why? Did something happen?
gerard-gay: nothing happened gerard-gay: just kinda worried about roman
happypappypatton: Is he okay?
gerard-gay: idk gerard-gay: i messaged him earlier but he didn’t respond
happypappypatton: Oh no, I’m so sorry!
gerard-gay: it’s okay gerard-gay: at least my parents aren’t home gerard-gay: so i get the house to myself😎
happypappypatton: Can I call you and keep you company?
gerard-gay: nah that’s okay gerard-gay: i don’t wanna take time out of your day
happypappypatton: You’re not happypappypatton: Nobody should be alone on Valentine’s day happypappypatton: Pleeeeease??? I want to talk to you!
gerard-gay: okay
happypappypatton: Yay!!
Virgil laughed to himself as he clicked the phone icon. It didn’t even finish ringing once before Patton picked up.
“Hi Vee!”
“Hey, Pat.”
“How’ve you been?”
“In the ten seconds since you last talked to me?” He laughed. “Exactly the same.”
Patton giggled. “Good point.”
“What about you?”
“I’m doing great! You know I love Valentine’s day.”
“I know you do. You and your roommate are having that Palentine’s party this year, right?”
“Yup!”
“I wish I could come,” Virgil half-joked.
“I know, I wish you could too. Just hang in there, we’ve only got a year and a half ‘till you graduate.”
“Yeah, I know. I’m counting the days.”
“Me too,” Patton agreed with a soft laugh. “Has Roman gotten back to you yet?”
“Nope.”
“That’s really weird. I would have thought he’d have sent you a page-long message about how much he loves you and misses you.”
“I know, I thought so too.” He sighed. “Do you think he’s sick of me?”
“No, absolutely not. You know how much Roman cares about you. Besides, even if he didn’t, he wouldn’t just ignore your messages.”
“Yeah, I guess. It would be pretty out of character for him to just ghost me.”
“Ghost you? But it’s not Halloween, it’s Valentine’s Day!”
Virgil groaned. “You couldn’t not make a dad joke, huh?”
“Sorry,” he giggled. “But you gotta admit, that was kinda funny.”
“Meh. It wasn’t your worst work.”
Patton laughed.
“Anyway.”
“Yeah, anyway…”
The two of them were quiet for a moment. “What about the others?” asked Virgil. “Have you talked to ‘em today?”
“Mhm! I DMed everyone earlier. I’m actually talking to ‘em right now.”
“Oh, cool. Are you…” he hesitated before finishing, “talking to Roman?”
“No, he’s the only one who hasn’t said anything. So on the off-chance he’s actually ignoring you, he’s ignoring me too.”
“Has anyone else said anything?”
“Nope. It’s weird, I asked them if they’d talked to him today after you told me he hadn’t been responding, and they all said no.”
“Even Remus?”
“Uh-huh. Apparently he hasn’t even seen him today.”
Virgil started bouncing his leg anxiously. “Okay, now I’m getting kinda scared. Do you think something happened to him?”
“I dunno. Maybe? But Remus would’ve said something about it, right?”
“Yeah, I’d think so.”
“Let’s change the subject,” Patton suggested. “I don’t wanna make you more anxious about this than you already are.”
“Thanks, Pat. How are the others? What are they up to?”
“They’re doing pretty good! Remus is working on a writing project, Janus is playing Stardew Valley, and Logan’s procrastinating on his schoolwork by scrolling Tumblr. Don’t worry, I already scolded him for it.”
Virgil laughed, the mention of Logan reminding him of something. “Ooh, speaking of Logan, are you gonna tell him today?”
“No, not today.”
Virgil was genuinely shocked. “Really? Why not?”
“C’mon, you know him. He sees Valentine’s Day as an excuse for big companies to make a boatload of money.”
“So? I think that too. What does that have to do with you not telling him?”
“It wouldn’t mean anything to tell him today. I don’t even know if I’m ready to tell him yet or not. Besides, he’s got a lot on his plate today, Valentine’s day or not.”
“I get that. Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound so pushy. You tell him when you know you’re ready.”
“Thanks, Vee. You didn’t sound pushy, though. I definitely know how frustrating it can be when your friend’s been pining after someone for months on end but they still refuse to do anything about it.“
Virgil laughed. “Okay, okay, I get it. I’ll stop complaining.”
“I’m not saying you have to. I did my fair share of complaining when y—” Patton stopped abruptly, and Virgil heard a faint voice coming from the other end. “Okay, just gimme a second,” Patton called out, clearly talking to someone else. “I’m so sorry, Vee, I gotta go. Emile promised a couple friends we’d meet them for lunch today and it completely slipped my mind.”
“That’s okay,” Virgil reassured him. “You go have fun, Pat. I’ll be fine by myself.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure. If I get really lonely I can always talk to the others.”
“Okay. Tell me if Roman gets back to you, ‘kay?”
“I will. I’ll talk to ya later.”
“Bye! Love you!”
“Love you too.” Virgil hung up the phone and got up, grabbing his dirty dishes and taking them into the kitchen to wash them. Once he finished, he glanced over at the clock, which read 10:37. Only about two and a half hours until Mom and Dad get home, he thought as he put the dishes away. He left the kitchen, checking his phone again as he headed toward his bedroom. Once again, Roman still hadn’t said anything. He’s definitely awake by now. Had he been right? Had something happened to him? He forced the thought away. He couldn’t let that bother him. Why was it so important, anyway? Today was just another day.
He reached his room and sat down at his desk, turning on his laptop and putting on his headphones. He then opened Spotify and put on the playlist he’d made for Roman the day after they’d gotten together, before switching over to Tumblr and scrolling through his dashboard. He could probably do the exact same thing in the living room, but he preferred the cozier, more familiar atmosphere of his bedroom. Peanut, his cat, climbed up onto his lap and curled up into a ball. Virgil smiled to himself and reached one hand down to scratch him behind the ear. Peanut purred, and Virgil’s smile widened.
He stayed there for a few hours, seeing what everyone on Tumblr was up to today. Every so often, he switched to Discord to see if Roman had replied to him yet, but no such luck. He did his best to ignore his growing worry, focusing instead on the computer in front of him and the cat on his lap. He could be busy today, he reminded himself. His world doesn’t revolve around you.
Soon enough, he heard the familiar rumble of the garage door, followed by the ca-CHUNK of the front door and the clip-clop-clip-clop of his parents’ footsteps. Virgil gently moved Peanut off his lap, which the pale ginger tabby didn’t seem to mind much. “I’m gonna go say hi to Mom and Dad,” he told the cat. “You can come if ya want.” Peanut meowed in response, which made Virgil laugh. He knew his cat couldn’t understand him, but he still found it wildly amusing when he acted as if he did. He crouched down to pat his head a few times before leaving his bedroom and going into the living room. He smiled at his parents when he saw them. “Hey,” he greeted, giving a sort of half-wave.
“Hey, honey,” his mom greeted with a smile.
“Happy Valentine’s Day!” added his dad.
“Yeah, you too.” He came over and hugged his parents.
“Have you eaten yet?” his dad wanted to know.
“I did,” he reassured him. “I had a bowl of cereal.”
This satisfied him. “Good.”
“What’ve you been up to?” asked his mom.
“Not much. I had breakfast, called Patton and then went to hang out with Peanut and scroll Tumblr for a bit. What about you guys? What exactly were you picking up?” He glanced around in search of a box or some kind of indication of a possible answer but found none.
“Actually,” answered his mom. “It was something for you.”
Virgil hadn’t expected that. “Oh! I-uh, cool. Thanks.”
“Don’t thank us yet,” his dad told him with a laugh. “Go and see, it’s in the garage.”
“Okay.” He went into the laundry room, where the door to the garage was, with no idea what he was going to find in there. His parents rarely got him big presents, and when they did it was either for his birthday or for Christmas. He had no idea what to expect. He reached the door, turned the handle, and flicked on the lights.
Standing there was a teenage boy with a broad smile. He wore a red hoodie and a pair of ripped blue jeans, and his white sneakers were dirty and worn. Around his neck was a necklace with a gold-colored charm shaped like a crown. He spoke, his voice sounding to Virgil like the most beautiful of songs. “Happy Valentine’s Day, sweetheart.”
“ROMAN!” Virgil barreled into him, nearly knocking him over as he threw his arms around him. “Oh my God, you’re actually here. Like, right here. In my garage. How did you even manage to do this?”
“I have my ways.”
Virgil pulled back a little to smirk at him. “You’re just as insufferable in real life as you are online, huh?”
“Well, I’m afraid you’re stuck with me and my insufferableness.”
“Unfortunately.” Virgil gave him a lopsided grin as an indication that he was joking, and an adoring smile crossed his boyfriend’s face. “Is this why you haven’t answered my message?”
“I can’t believe you’re actually here. You actually are here, right? This isn’t some practical joke?”
“It’s not a joke. I wouldn’t do that to you. Well, maybe I would, but not on a day like today. Not on Valentine’s Day.”
The two were quiet for a few moments, just taking in one another’s presence. Virgil was pretty confident that he would willingly stay here forever if he could.
“Well, now that you’re here, what do you want to do first?” Virgil asked, finally breaking the silence.
Roman gave Virgil the playful smirk he’d only ever imagined before. “I think I have an idea.” He rested a hand on his cheek and leaned in, and Virgil felt his heart soar as he and Roman shared their long-awaited first kiss.

I think I would've enjoyed canon!Clace more if CC hadn't written them the way she had. Clary and Jace had so much potential to be as epic as a couple as malec but then the ending of the first book rolled around and I immediately lost interest in their relationship. I figured they weren't siblings, and I know Valentine only said that to manipulate them, but there are so many better ways she(CC) could've had Valentine do that than by telling them they're siblings.
I really like clace, in fanfictions and headcanons and fanart they are amazing, but the way Cassie wrote them in the first (at least) 3 books really made me want to gag. I've recently reread tmi and I hated them even more this time because I'm older(I was 12 when I first read it) and I have a better perception on healthy relationships, and Jace telling Clary that he doesn't care that she's his sister and that he still loves her romantically just isn't.
They were both practically children when this happened and I'm so glad that they grew and aren't like that anymore by tda and gotsm, and I'm praying that their relationship and character developments don't go away in twp because I still have hope that they are as good as half the fandom thinks
That's a very good point.
I think one of the reasons why they get so much hate is because (and this may be subjective) Cassie's writing in tmi was not the best.
It was good, but not the best.
And Clace carried tmi. It was about them. So, it can be difficult to read or even like them.
So, when I reread tmi (especially COA/COG) yes I don't like the whole sibling dilemma either. But I remind myself that's just bad writing. I feel like it says more about CC than Jace and Clary.
But as pointed out before, the writing got better - and of course as a result - the characters got better.
But unfortunately, CC's writing only got better after tmi. And we didn't get to see much of Clary or Jace after that (Especially from their pov).
I feel like if we had, it would have helped. More information or context about post-tmi clace would change how people view them. For example, I didn't like Simon in tmi. Again, for it was bad characterisation and writing. But I absolutely loved in him Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy. Becuase his character had clear purpose and the writing was so good.
And yes, since we have Janus in the storyline now, I do hope CC keeps the momentum going and the writing only gets better and not worse with time :)

ToA OC, Elsie Hildehorg. I originally created her for my Simsverse as a love interest for Blinky, because back when he lived with both Jlaire and Darby and Love Day would roll around, he was the only adult in the house who kept having a crappy holiday and it made me feel bad for him oof lol. But I don’t really ship Blinky with any canon characters so...OC time. Most of the Simsverse-exclusive characters never get art buuuut I kinda enjoyed the character I came up with here, so I’m bringing her into some art. That said, here’s her info:
Elsie is actually a former changeling; in fact, she was one of the first. She served in the early days of the Janus Order as a records keeper and historian, studying humans to help with smoother infiltrations. After a few centuries of doing so, however, she began to sympathize with the fleshbags and ultimately became disillusioned with the Order, from which she defected. Using her expertise as long-time record keeper, she erased any clues as to her whereabouts, moved far from her former base, and re-adopted her Trollish surname, Hildehorg, rather than using that of her familiar (as one of the older whelps stolen by the Gumm-gumms to use as changelings, she is one of the very few who still remember their Trollish name (Stricklander is another, though it helps that his Trollish name happened to be similar to his familiar’s). The Gumm-gumms and Janus Order do not keep track of such information as they do not deem it important).
Under this name, she settled in a small town near Hoboken, where she lived quietly as a normal human librarian (a little bit of shenanigans were required to help the actual human residents forget how long she’s really been there, but shhh. magic).
She had to abandon her library, however, after the familiars were rescued from the Darklands and therefore lost access to her human form. She lived (literally) alone underground for a few months, unsure of where to go next...until word managed to reach her that the Trollmarket Eternal Night refugees had settled at a new Heartstone nearby. Knowing that she no longer had much chances left in the human world, she decided she may as well integrate back into the Trollish world for the first time in centuries, and she set off for the new settlement in hopes that they were in need of any librarian services.
As it turns out, they were, given that Blinky was so busy tending to his duties as the new leader. Hence, how they met. She caught Blinky’s eyes almost immediately due to being the first of his same type (other than Dictatious) he’d seen in centuries--over the years they'd become lot less common than they once were. But it wasn’t until he found out she had a passion for history and knew the entirety of A Brief Recapitulation of Troll Lore by heart that he really began to find himself smitten.
Jim and Claire absolutely egg him on lol

My True Identity: foreshadowing and cruel irony
I promised this analysis long ago. I promised I would have finally started the rewatch.
And here I am. After all this time, it's finally rewatch time.
Before proceeding with this, let me clarify a couple points:
These analyses won't have a clear schedule. As you know, some episodes take a lot of time, while others are much simpler and/or shorter. I will just post every time I finish an analysis.
Not all episodes might be worth an analysis. Some might be fused into one post, others might be completely ignored. That doesn’t mean they’re useless, but only that I personally have nothing to say about them.
For now, I don't plan to talk about episodes I talked about, like DWIT and POF. But who knows, maybe there will be something else to add, when I'll come back to them? Still, for now don't expect anything new for these two episodes.
These are all my personal thoughts, so I could be completely wrong about everything. If you disagree/agree/want to add something, please feel free to do it.
As always, I might talk about all sorts of themes, so read at your own risk.
And now, let's begin.
_______________________________
An unclear plan
When he looked back at the first episode of what would've become Sanders Sides, Thomas himself admitted he had no clear plan about what he wanted to do. Would he film just a bunch of vlogs with these characters taken from his Vines? Would he do silly, funny sketches and talk about some random theme every time? He had no idea.
And this episode shows it: it really looks more like a simple, light-hearted vlog with funny characters, rather than what it would've become.
And this is probably what makes it a very intriguing start. Looking at it in retrospect, you can find a lot of stuff. You can see a lot of cruel irony, considering what these characters are saying and who is saying what. You can see a lot of points that will actually be discussed throughout the series. And you can even notice a lot of foreshadowing.
_______________________________
The main point of Sanders Sides
[Thomas]: Do I really know myself as well as I should? (...)  I need to have a sit-down with myself, figure myself out, and maybe come to a better understanding that we all could learn from! Let’s do this!
This first episode might not take the future developments of the series into consideration, but the main point was still here.
Thomas doesn't know himself well enough. There's a lot he has to figure out. He needs to talk with himself and learn more.
Considering who are the last two sides Thomas learned about, this is just adorable. Look at this young Thomas, so cute and naive, thinking: "Oh yes, I will learn more about myself and it will all be fun and games! :DDD". So adorable, he has no idea what the future has in store for him.
This also connects to another point I mentioned in my analysis about the Dark Sides: before starting the series, Thomas didn't know his sides well enough. And we can see it in the way they interact between them and with Thomas.
For example, this part:
[Morality]: And no matter what, no one knows you better than yourself. Am I right, Tony? [Thomas]: Not my name. [Morality]: Then what is it?
I know it was a joke, but it was also a confirmation. Not even his own heart knows him well. Thomas never truly spoke with his sides - and they never truly spoke between them. They've always played a role - the teacher, the prince, the dad. Now they can start knowing each other.

Possible foreshadowing about Roman's arc
[Thomas]: Like, okay, relationships (...) where do I stand in those regards? [Princey]: I have a pretty ideal vision of love... There's someone out there for me... One true love... [Logic]: But you tend to overthink things, rule out possibilities with logic, dream up obstacles with each new connection you make... [Thomas]: And that when the anxiety kicks in. Maybe that’s why I haven’t found a person for me yet.
Oh boy, I can feel the last episodes and Asides looming over me.
Let's analyze each part of this conversation:
1) Thomas (and Roman) has a pretty ideal vision of love. One true love waiting for him. And now, guess what? Thomas is in love with Nico. And we all remember how Roman welcomed the idea of this new love in their lives.
[Roman]: I so... SO badly want this. I- I'm desperate for it...
And also how amazed he was, when they came back home:
[Roman]: A POET! To top it all off, he's a poet!
Considering the above premises, would it be so difficult for Roman to start idealizing this relationship with Nico? To consider Nico the “one true love” he talked about? To put him on a pedestal and, at the same time, search inside him all the characteristics the one true love should have?
This could lead to a very interesting possibility: Thomas putting Nico under the pressure of being his perfect man, to have all those characteristics his dreamy, romantic side wants to see. All while considering him incredibly perfect to the point of becoming inhuman.
All of this could end up only one way: scaring Nico. Maybe to the point of driving him away from Thomas.
2) Thomas overthinks, “rule out possibilities with logic” and dreams up obstacles. Could this also be a possible foreshadowing?
At the end of FWSA, when Thomas asked if they were ready for this relationship, Virgil stopped smiling, all while the camera slowly zoomed on him. The message was clear: Virgil isn’t ready for a change yet.
So we have Roman, who sees Nico as the perfect, ideal man of his dreams. And we have Virgil, afraid of changes, overthinker by nature and prone to self-deprecation.
The ingredients are all here: it is very possible that Thomas/Roman will put Nico on a pedestal and, the moment Nico is scared by Roman's adoration, Virgil starts to freak out and to talk bad about himself, because why someone so perfect and dreamy like Nico would ever love someone like Thomas?
This could potentially lead to a heated confrontation between Virgil and Roman that could be the metaphorical last nail on the coffin: Roman is already hurt because Patton sided with Janus. Nico drifting away from Thomas and Virgil's self-deprecation might convince him that yes, Thomas is truly bad and unworthy of love like Virgil says. He himself is bad and unworthy because he's not the perfect Creativity he should be.
And this can be a great starting point for his character arc.
  _______________________________
OH THE IRONY part 1: no one learned anything (yet)
[Morality]: But that’s okay. The important thing to keep in mind is nobody’s perfect. Everyone comes with their own flaws. [Thomas]: Including me. [Princey]: Yes, someone will accept us, flaws and all. Until that day, I shall learn to love... myself.
Oh hey, look: the end of POF and Roman who still hasn't learnt nothing.
Jokes aside, I love how Patton is the one who says that everybody has flaws, but he excludes Thomas. It's Thomas himself who says he has flaws as well.
Doesn't that remind you of anything? Like this moment in SvS?
[Patton]: Well... Nobody's perfect... Except for Thomas! He loves his friends!
Patton saw Thomas as perfect and pure from the start. I love this, because it's very subtle and you don't notice it - until the events of SvS and POF.
But while Patton is finally learning (after almost 30 episodes) that Thomas isn't perfect, Roman is still very far from his goal of loving himself.
That's probably why he needs a romance this much: by focusing on someone else, he can easily ignore how much he doesn't like himself and his flaws.
And hey, I can even guess the name of these "flaws" he doesn't like so much.
Tumblr media
_______________________________
These words are not foreshadowing at all
[Logic]: Um... Are we bringing up flaws now? Because if so, get ready to take a lot of notes. [Thomas]: Oh, uh... [Logic]: -continuing- Okay, you ready? Here we go. You procrastinate A LOT. [Morality]: You can be a bit selfish with your food and your other belongings... [Princey]: You’re definitely not the most adventurous person... [Thomas]: Okay, maybe this was a bad idea if I'm supposed to be learning to love myself. [Logic]: Ah, but remember, everyone has flaws.
Let's not forget that Thomas still had no clear plan, while filming this episode. This was supposed to be just a vlog.
But look at how the universe made these characters say these things. Look at dear sweet Patton, bringing up Thomas’ selfishness. How cute, he really has no idea what episodes are waiting for him.
And Roman brings up Thomas’ fear of changes. Awww, how cute, he has NO IDEA of the guy that will become his worst nightmare and his bestie at the same time <3
_______________________________
OH THE IRONY part 2: just look who's talking
[Morality]: Well, it’s important to be nice to ourselves and cut ourselves some slack every once in a while... [Princey]: Wouldn’t want to be our own villain, would we?
LOOK WHO’S TALKING.
Just look at the absolute irony of Mr. Selflessness talking about the importance of being nice to ourselves. Mr. Thomas-Should-Be-A-Martyr saying that cutting us some slack is good.
All while Mr. I-Thought-I-Was-Your-Hero tells us that we don’t want to be our own villain, right? Right?
Tumblr media
_______________________________
Three fundamental questions
[Princey]: Well, what do you wish to look for in a relationship? What are you hoping to gain from having another person in your life? [Thomas]: Um... I don’t know. Someone who’s a nice compliment to me... someone who wants a long stable relationship... someone who indulges in the same sense of humor, and um... someone who can binge-watch cartoons with me.
This might be considered another foreshadowing of Thomas and Nico's relationship - maybe even the solution of the drama that will take place, after Roman and Virgil's fight we suggested before. The best solution: not putting Nico on a pedestal and seeing him as the perfect man, but appreciating him for who he is, for the normal guy he is - a guy Thomas loves and nothing else.
[Logic]: With everything you've learned, what do you wish to do with your education? [Thomas]: Ooh... I am not sure... I’d love to figure out ways to help the environment. Science was always my strong point and I love chemistry.
As I said multiple times, I think Thomas' decision to leave chemical engineering and become an actor will play a huge role in Logan's arc. And this question slighty hints at this.
At this point in time, Thomas still wants to use his education in a fruitful way. He still wants to use science, it's still his main goal. Doing silly videos is just an addition. "A good start", as he said:
[Thomas]: I think just being able to put out silly light-hearted content into the world is kind of a good start. It makes me really happy to do that. [Logic]: Well there you go. A good foundation.
And that's how Logan considers it as well: just a foundation. Not something that will take a huge part of Thomas' life. These videos are just a start.
This explains his reactions in the following episodes, especially how much he insisted on Thomas having a real job: after all, these videos are not something serious. Why focusing so much on them?
This could potentially be the starting point of Logan's increasing frustration and the reason of his final snap in season 3, that would also start his character arc.
But Patton’s question is what really surprises me:
[Morality]: What positive impacts do you inevitably hope to bring to this world?
Not only this screams POF, but it shows something for the first time: that Patton is silly, but he’s also clever. He’s not a complete idiot. He likes to be silly, he IS silly, but this question proves he's a lot more mature than he seems.
And if you think this is just a one-time thing, don't worry, we'll see it again in the future.
Is this a foreshadowing of my next analysis? Well, the episode was all foreshadowing, why can't I foreshadow something as well? ;)
( Support me on Ko-fi )

ooooh janus for the ask game!!!!
Thanks for the ask!!
First impression: Ok so I first watched the entirety of Sanders Sides in about a week earlier this year. I remember there were a solid two or three days where I thought Janus was completely unsympathetic, I even wrote the first 600 words of a u!Janus fic which I never continued. Obviously my opinion changed very quickly
Impression now: How can someone be so hot and yet so wrong??? The man thinks a philosopher's personal opinions don't impact their work! If I met him irl I wouldn't be able to stand him, but I do love him as a character, he's very fun to write and cosplay and draw
Favourite moment: Honestly I just love every moment Janus is onscreen. He's so sassy and also just such a dork. I really like all his interactions with Virgil, especially the end of the Halloween episode, but my absolute FAVOURITE bits are in the 5 year anniversary video "I do love the consistency of his makeup"/"It was a song about lies! And I wasn't there for it >:("
Idea for a story: It genuinely took me so long to think of something even though Janus is probably the character I write most skdhdhf
Anyway here's something I thought of while I was having a nap this afternoon
Janus is some kind of celebrity, he's a singer and actor and just generally very famous. There isn't a single person on earth who doesn't know his name... apart from one Logan Sanders
They meet at a library or something, probably both looking at the philosophy section. Janus immediately thinks that Logan is cute and starts flirting with him. Logan isn't really interested until Janus makes a comment about the book he's picked out and they end up having a full-on debate in the middle of the library. At which point Logan realises that Janus is hot and smart and he might be kind of interested
They run into each other a few more times at the library before they end up going on a date. Once Janus figures out that Logan doesn't have a clue who he is, he decides not to tell him because he quite likes not having to talk about his work
Also you should know that I'm picturing this as a comedy movie where Janus has to do increasingly wild things to stop Logan finding out
They have go for dinner and there's a billboard about Janus' latest film right behind Logan, and Janus has to keep him from turning around for the entire date
Logan finds out Janus is famous when his friends ask to see a picture of the guy he's dating, and when he shows them they're all like how did you not know who he is??? Do you live under a rock????
He's a little annoyed that Janus wasn't honest with him, but things work out in the end
Unpopular opinion: Janus hasn't actually been accepted yet!!! Thomas says he accepts him, and I think he's really trying to, but he doesn't seem to fully understand what Janus is doing and still views deceit as a negative thing. He literally says that Janus existing means he's "not perfect"
I think this is something that will be explored over the next few episodes, and I hope he does get fully accepted soon!!
Favourite relationship: Anxceit is my absolute favourite ship. There's a lot of angst there, but they cared (and still care!!!) about each other so much. And I love them as a platonic friendship for the same reasons
Also special mention for Loceit, also one of my favourites, I think they should drink wine together and debate and make out 😌
Favourite headcanon: I've said this so many times but I'll say it again, Janus and Virgil used to be best friends before Virgil left!!!! They had some kind of big argument that they're both still hurt by, but I think they miss each other
I'd love to do more of these, so if anyone wants to send asks of other characters, go ahead!!

A love for love
Description: Roman loved love. He always had, even as a small child. So why was it so different whenever he was involved?
TW: panic attack, mention of making out but nothing is actually shown, cursing, questioning, unrequited love, let me know if I should add anything else
Ships: unrequited royality, platonic roceit, dukeceit
Genre: high school au
Prompt: prompt 6, aromantic (prompt by @pridewrite2021)
Roman loved love. He always had. Even as a small child, he'd watch wide eyed as Prince Charming leaned down and gave sleeping beauty true loves kiss, something so powerful that it was able to break an evil witches curse. He'd stayed up till early hours in the morning, squealing with excitement as he read about two warriors able to take on an entire army, motivated by their want to keep the other safe and stealing glances at each other as their metal swords collided with the enemies weapon. He'd sing his heart out when a romance song came on the radio, gushing about their love interest with such emotion that Roman adored.
Yes, Roman loved love.
So why was it so different whenever he was involved?
The earliest memory Roman had of this was when he was in first grade. Two of his classmates ran up to him giggling as they sang "Savannah has a crush on you!" Instead of feeling that overwhelming joy like the ones described in his books and music, he felt a deep cutting disgust in his stomach. Roman felt less like he could conquer the world and more like the world was going to swallow him whole. Rather than singing any great love song that he'd sang so many times in his room or in the car, he began crying instead while the two girls looked at him in confusion.
"It was just because I don't like her." Roman told himself.
But this feeling of being out of place only grew as his fellow classmates gushed about their boyfriends and girlfriends, crushes and which cartoon character they find cute. Granted, they were in second and third grade, so the terms "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" roughly translated to "they let me borrow their crayon at break once and now we're in love and going to get married." However, this love for love spread like a virus and Romans desire to fit in only grew. So, during a sleepover with his friends, Roman looked upon the TV, at the princess Aurora and decided 'She'd make a good crush.' Before announcing it to the crowd of toddlers, the words immediately sounding wrong as he spoke them, as if he'd spoken them in a foreign language. He decided that night to never speak of his supposed "crush" ever again. Roman liked Aurora with Prince Philip much more, anyway.
Roman was in fifth grade when he was talking to one of his best friends, Valorie. The two of them just laughing and joking when his friends approached.
"Who's your girlfriend, Ro?" one laughed, putting his arm around Roman. And he knew it was a joke. He knew that. But it still felt like the arm hadn't wrapped around his shoulders and instead knocked all the air out his lungs in one hard punch. This moment lingered in his mind like a haunting apparition, quickly causing any friendships with girls to become strained. First only talking occasionally while in class or on the yard, to only talking when his guy friends weren't around, to only texting outside of school to nothing at all. Roman mourned these friendships but it had been made clear that boys and girls couldn't just be friends and the idea of people thinking he was dating any of these people made him feel like a caged bird.
Later that year Roman decided, despite his love for love, he didn't want to date. The reason for this being...
"I'm just more focused on my career."
"I just don't see the point in dating right now."
"I've never really liked anyone so what's the point?"
"I just like being more focused on myself."
And any other excuse he could possibly come up with, repeating them as many times as he needed to to believe them. Roman had always been a good actor, after all. But, of coarse, with this supposed decision came "reassurance" from adults, as if they had the ability to see the future.
"You just haven't met the right person, yet."
"You'll change your mind one day, when you get a bit older."
"All kids say that at your age."
"Roman isn't interested in dating YET."
These invalidating promises made Romans blood boil the more he heard them. It was as if he was yelling while trapped in a soundproof box, unable to escape. But, despite what seemingly everyone around him was saying, Roman knew deep down that romance just wasn't for him.
He also remained thankful that this love for love hadn't infected his friendship too much.
That was until seventh grade when what was originally a few cases of a love for love became an epidemic. It seemed that all anyone wanted to know was "do you have a crush on her?" "Did you hear that Lily and Reese are going out?" "Do you find her attractive?" This soon made its way over to his friends as they talked about how hot the girls were and teased each other relentlessly about who they liked. Roman once again felt like an outsider in his friend group. His friends conversations about their girlfriends may as well have been spoken in Latin.
Then the day came when his twin brother, Remus, came out as gay and started dating a guy named Janus. It then occurred to Roman.
"Maybe the reason I haven't been feeling anything for all these girls was because they were girls! Maybe I like boys instead!" Roman had never been a very logical person but this definitely seemed to make more sense. If he didn't like women then that surely must mean that he liked men instead, right? Because otherwise...otherwise Roman didn't know what that meant.
So Roman tried. Really God damn tried to find boys cute, to fantasize about dating them, to relate to gay experiences. But all he was met with was the same foreign and hollow feeling he'd felt when he lied about having a crush back in 2nd grade. Roman quickly began feeling his love for the concept of love diminish.
So when Roman entered grade 9, he decided to put anything to do with his romantic feelings (or lack there of) in a little box in the back of his mind to deal with later. Instead putting his passion and good acting skills to use by joining his schools drama department. The moment he stepped foot on stage, he felt himself come alive. The crowd, the praise, the creativity, it was addicting.
And it was only made better with the more friends he made. There was one person who he grew partially close to. Patton Heart. The two quickly became best friends, often hanging out outside of rehearsals and texting non stop. And, for the first time in what seemed like years, Roman was happy and comfortable.
That was until 10th grade. Roman way lying on his bed watching Netflix on his phone when a message from Patton came through. Roman clicked on the message and was caught massively off guard as he read it.
Patton: hey, Roman. So I've been thinking a lot lately. In particular about us and about you. And over the past few months I've started to realize that I have a really big crush on you. You're really handsome, funny and talented and I love spending time with you. It's totally ok if you don't like me back, but I figured it's better to be honest.
It should've been it. The moment when one of the main characters confesses their feelings for the love interest and they proclaim they feel the same way. Sparks fly and their hearts beat faster with excitement. It all becomes so clear when they hear that confession in movies and books.
But this wasn't a movie.
Roman felt time stand still as he read the message, his hands shaking so much he didn't think he would be able to respond even if he knew how to answer.
He couldn't breath. Why couldn't he breath?! The edges of his vision went fuzzy as he desperately gasped for air.
"Patton's great." He thought through his suffocating panic. "He's funny and charming and sweet. You should like him. Why don't you like him? What's wrong with you?!" Romans thoughts yelled as he tried desperately to hold back the tears threatening to spill over.
Not sure of what else to do, Roman ran to Remus' room, hoping he'd know how to respond.
Roman knocked on his brothers door and Remus responded with a very annoyed "come in" after a few beats of silence. Remus and Janus were sat on Remus' bed and Roman could tell from their slightly red lips that the two had been making out. But he wasn't in the headspace to even pretend to care that he'd interrupted them right now.
"Ugh, what do you want?" Remus said, clearly too irritated by his brothers presence to notice his distress.
"P-Patton just messaged me s-saying he likes me and I don't know what to say." Roman barely stuttered out, trying desperately not to cry in front of Remus and his boyfriend.
"Aw, cute. Roro finally got a man." Remus joked but Roman was definitely not in the mood for that kind of humor.
"Do you like him back?" Janus asked, calmly, clearly taking more notice of Romans distress.
"Well, I do. But not like that."
"Ok, so just tell him that. It doesn't have to be this whole thing. Why are you getting so upset?" Remus said, looking at Roman as if he was stupid.
Which, to be fair, Roman did feel very stupid right now.
"He's my best friend. I don't want to upset him." Yeah, that was the reason Roman was freaking out. He just didn't want to hurt Patton. That was it.
"Well, just say you don't want a relationship right now or some shit. Besides, he's probably more worried now because you've taken so long to answer." Remus pointed out. Yeah, Roman was never coming to Remus with his problems ever again.
"Yeah...ok." Roman said. Slowly, he walked out the room, noticing Janus looking at him curiously but deciding not to focus on it.
Roman: I'm really sorry Patton, but I don't feel the same way. We can still be friends tho. It doesn't have to be awkward between us. Especially because I really like being friends with you.
Patton: Yeah, that's ok. This is kinda what I was expecting to be honest. But yeah, I still wanna stay friends.
A few days later Janus came over again for dinner. Afterwards, Roman went into the living room and sat on the couch, scrolling through Instagram.
To his surprise, Janus followed after him and sat next to him. "So, how are you feeling after a few days ok. Broken his heart yet?" Janus teased.
Roman huffed out a laugh. "Uh, yeah, we agreed to just stay friends. Which I'm happy about but it's also really weird. I honestly don't know where we go from here which sucks because I really like Patton. Just not like...that." Janus nodded in understanding.
"You must care about him a lot if you had a panic attack just because you didn't want to hurt his feelings." Janus said. Roman just shrugged in response. "So, does that mean you like someone else?" Janus asked.
"No...I. I don't know. I've...I've never really liked anyone. I don't think I ever will. And people say I'll change my mind but...it isn't like I've made a choice. I've felt like this my whole life and everyone around me has had a crush on someone by now. I just... don't think I was built for romance. Which I know probably sounds stupid but that's just how I feel." He said, so honest it almost hurt.
Janus nodded slowly, taking in what Roman was saying. "It doesn't sound stupid." He said before pausing, as if considering his next choice of words. "Roman...have you ever heard of the term aromantic?" He asked.
"No." Roman answered, looking at Janus curiously.
"It basically means someone who experiences little to no romantic attraction. So they don't get crushes and stuff like that." He explained.
Roman felt his heart leap and for once it wasn't because of a fight or flight reflex. "Wait, that's a thing?" He asked in disbelief.
"Yeah, a surprising number of people identify with it. I don't want to assume anything but I thought I might mention it just from what you've told me and what Remus has said in the past. Plus that panic on your face yesterday reminded me a bit of when I tried to force myself into romantic situations with girls." Janus smirked to himself.
That night Roman researched more on aromanticism than he did for his science test. The more he searched, the more it just made sense. Of coarse, he still had a long way to go towards self acceptance. Roman could feel himself already starting to mourn the idea that this was a choice he'd made ages ago and he was going to feel romantic love one day. It was an odd feeling, realizing that even though he knew deep down it wasn't a decision and he'd always hated when people made those comments, a part of him took comfort in adults promising that he'd change his mind one day. He was also horrified to realize that he didn't know what his future was supposed to look like now without romance. After all, media seemed to show single middle aged adults exclusively as depressed and lonely. But as he scoured through wiki articles to tumblr pages to memes, he knew this was a good start to unlearning any nonsense society had been shoving down his throat.
The more Roman learned and the more people he talked to online about it, the more he started to feel his love for love increase. But instead of it being centered on a prince and princess in a movie, two in love warriors keeping each other alive in a book or a cheesy love song on the radio, it was a different type of love Roman was finally starting to feel the more he accepted himself.
Self love.
