You've finally catching up with your family, your dream was to open up a bakery shop like a restaurant in The Republic City your cousins Bolin and Mako were nice to help you find a place to stay for a while at the city, your not a bender like your other cousins you've never fought actually in your life, all your dream and goal is to have a normal life and have a popular restaurant that everyone in the whole world would know it.
But your grandmother expect something else from you, she wanted for you to have kids have a family first she has alots of grandkids and kids but you, you were special to her too not only her other grandchildren and her children, your mother was the most sweetest daughter she had but your mother died from giving born to you, so when you were born your grandma was always caring about you.
She always adore you and your cousins and aunts were jealous of you, you were blessed with long-brunette hair and rosy cheeks with tan skin tone.Meaning many men tried to ask you out, you decline every one of them. You do not want to date anyone.
It was never on your plan to have family or get married, well you kinda want to but you think your not ready yet.
„ Mako, Bolin!” you hugged your cousin meanwhile Bolin was running into you to with plastic bags on his hands.
„ Hey y/n! How you doing?” Bolin smiled at you and so did Mako.
„ I'm doing great, wait am I bothering you?it looks like you both are on duty.” you became worried.
„ Oh no no don't worry y/n,were on lunch hour so don't worry.” Bolin reassured you and you three continue to walk on the street.
„ so is it finally good to be free?” Mako joked and you just smiled at him.
„ well I kinda feel fine it's good here at Republic City too its been my dream to come here when I was a kid.” Bolin awe at you.
„ Good thing grandma let you a vacation-” Bolin was cut off by a someone screaming at the street.
They both looked at each other then running to the scream leaving you stunned you followed them too, catching your breath when you looked up you saw a lady getting hostage by a crazy man.
You gasped meanwhile Bolin and Mako were struggling to take the lady offs to the man's arms.
„ I'll handle this.” you heard a woman voice behind your cousins and metal bending the knife on the woman's neck.
They quickly took the woman away from the man's arms, but the man doesn't seem to care he just smirk.
„ you bitch your gonna regret this!” that's when the grey-haired woman touched his wrist and 'gently' bending it.
„ you are under arrest, you have right to remain silent.” some of the people cheered while you look at her confusing.
who is this woman?
„ Chief! We-were sorry we weren't thinking-” Mako started to apologized and called her 'chief'?
„ That's exactly what you should you been doing! You're police officer but you don't know what to do! Do your job better next time.” The woman groaned pinching her temple then taking her leave.
„ Yes chief!” Bolin and Mako salute at her.
Bolin came running into you apologizing for what had just happened while you assured him it was alright.
„ It's fine bo, who is that woman is she your chief? Why is she so rude towards you guys? She shouldn't treat you like that.” you came at him firing questions about her furrowing your brows.
„ oh yeah that's our meanie chief her name in 'Lin Beifong', she's like that actually were used to it so it's fine she's the chief after all.” Bolin tried to defend 'lin'.
Meanwhile you want to shout at her for yelling at your cousins but still you have no right to do that, she has a high name anyways while you have nothing.
„ Let's go to the apartment you'll be staying.” you agreed and just tried to continue your conversation.
//
„ Are you sure y/n?” Mako looked at you worried.
„ I'll be fine makmak, I still need to do some cleaning anyways now shushu! I don't want you to lose your job over my new apartment.” you smiled at him and giving him fake dirty face he gave you a sigh then nodding.
„ Ok then, don't forget if you need anything call me or Bolin,ok?” you can't help but smiled at his actions and nodding.
After Mako left you at your apartment you started to clean up,good thing Mako and Bolin did a little groceries for you to prepare, you just mop and change the bed you cleaned up the kitchen and the balcony.
You sighed and plopping down to the couch, finally some peace and some freedom this is want you want just relaxing in your new apartment, you started to get hungry but you were too tired to cook now so you decided to just cook some noodles.
„ I wonder what should I do tomorrow.”
//
'sigh'
Lin rubs her temple and sighing heavy again, she's finally done with her paperwork's but she still have to deal with the president there are many reports that some of the people in the republic citys are having 'issues'.
Lin is fixing her things she normally doesn't have a bag because sometimes she would never go to her apartment it actually depends on her mode, she made her way out to the Republic Headquarters.
Some of the police officers made their goodbyes to her but her being her she doesn't greet back.
She goes to her car then started the engine, while making her way to the apartment she turned on the radio to listens some news.
After a long way drive she finally made it to her destination, she was now making her way to her apartment door when suddenly she saw to to the side of the other apartment door has some 3 boxes on top of the floor.
Which made her raised her eyebrows, great some annoying neighbor is gonna be irritating to her. She sighed deeply again meanwhile you forgot you had a some box outside your door, you just laughed at yourself.
„ I'm such a forgetfulness, hah silly me” you talked to your self.
When you had gotten outside the door that's when Lin gotten inside her apartment, you've heard the your neighbors door closed but you didn't notice their faces you wanted to greet them though.
Maybe you could do it and say hi to them next time because today your pretty exhausted.
//
The next day you decided to pay visit to your cousins it was lunch time so you cooked their meal for lunch, you weren't really used to this placed so you kinda got lost to the street you tried asking some lady to where is the police station but she isn't really nice you just guess she's having a bad day.
Now your here lost, at some weird quiet street many guys are looking at you smirking you gulped not knowing to do, you started running but you felt like your being followed.
„ hey hey pretty girl, whats a pretty girl doing here alone?” some bald guy with a tattoo on his right arm asked you while his gang trying to join him too.
Whenever they would step forward to you you would step back, you tried avoiding them until some of his friends touched your wrist then the others started to joined.
„ please somebody help!” you shout pleading someone or somebody would try to save you.
The man had slapped you across the face telling you to shut up then pushing you down, you were crying you were needing help.
Before the bald man could hold you he was bent down over he was groaning, you couldn't see clearly because your eyes were blurry.
You could hear the men groaning like they were fighting that's when you soon passed out.
Lin knocked down the men that were trying to rape the girl she looked at her, she catches you as you passed out.
She sighed observe you for a moment before picking you up in a bridal style.
She could hear the others of the gang started to get up some of them left, ofcourse she couldn't let does men go away from their crime.
//
Lin stood infront of you waiting for you to wake up she's on a hospital, she called one of her police officers to take care of the men while she's with you, she doesn't know your address or your family.
But that's when she found your wallet but there was no luck finding a family picture so she didn't know what to do she just waited for you to woke up so she could ask you some questions.
Lin stared around her then rubbing her temple she sighed deeply, she felt you stir. She immediately sit back down clearing her throat.
She can't help but find you attractive, she doesn't know why she's feeling this but it seems her heart is beating so fast when she looks at you, she finds you familiar liem she have seen you somewhere.
She can't help but watch you sleeping.
You slowly opened your eyes, your eyes wandered around you could hear people around you talking and you felt a presence to your other side, that's when you saw her.
She's infront of you, your cousins Chief.
„ Wh-where am I?” you asked husky.
„ your at the Medical Center, I saw you walking down at the street with men.but don't worry miss their at jail so no one's gonna hurt you.” she said comforting you so you wouldn't have panic.
You let a tear fall down to your cheeks, this isn't the first time you encounterd this many men tried to do this to you too, you just wanted to stop and have a normal life.
Lin saw you crying she felt overwhelmed of this, she not used to this comforting she's not good at cheering up.
She sighed before asking you again.
„ What's your name miss? Where's your family so they could take care of you.” Lin asked you.
„ I'm y/n my family lives on Earth Kingdom, I'm just here for a week but my cousins are here... actually you know them.” Lin raised an eyebrow, she was thinking to herself who would be them.
„ Mako and Bolin.” you looked at Lin finding her shock, she didn't know you were her cousins she only know that their family lives on Earth Kingdom.
She cleared her throat and then scratching the back of her neck.
„ Alright then y/n I'll call Mako so that he could take care of you.” before Lin could leave you sat down then holding her wirst.
Which got her shocked and looked over she saw your eyes narrowed like you were mad at her, she wanted to pull away but it's like she couldn't.
„ I know you helped me and I owe you for that, but I just want you to know stop being rude to my cousins they work hard for you.”
That's when she pulled away from your grip.
„ Look here Miss.Y/n I know that you care about your cousins but it's my job and duty to protect the Republic City and I am the Chief Of The Republic City, I do what my duty is.” She answered back at you her voice was sternly.
„ you know miss, you should be thankful that I saved your life.” and after that she left.
You hated that woman how could she say things like that.you just sighed and wanting to leave this place but your not used to this city but your also afraid it might happened again.
„ Chief!” Bolin and Mako salute at their Lin who looked angry.
„ uhm something wrong chief?” Mako ask worriedly.
„ tell her to stop knowing about your jobs she's irritating. I'll take care of the others.” she then left again leaving the both brothers confused who was she talking about.
„ y/n! Are you alright?” Bolin rushed into you meanwhile you tried to get up but it seems like your body isn't too strong and doesn't have that much energy to get up.
„ yeah I'm kinda fine.” both the brothers didn't believe you but they just let it go for now.
„ could you tell us what happened?, Or maybe we should later so you can rest?” Mako ask you resting his hand to your shoulder.
You liked the second option maybe you should rest a bit before regaining your strength.
//
Lin sighed deeply she banged her both hands on the table she was investgating the men that were trying to rape you but none of them are telling the truth they kept lying.
„ no one's really gonna tell me where's your other gang, oh so you want to protect your beloved leader hah?” she watched the men fidgeting their fingers and some of them were looking around nervously.
She sighed deeply pinching the edge of her nose.
She left the room and going to her office but before she could enter she saw you again, he blood boiled to her body.
Spirits she doesn't even know if she's mad or just finds you attractive that much.
„ Chief beifong, the girl is ready to talk.” the police officer told her while she doesn't payed any attention to the police officer she just watched you.
„ you can take it easy y/n, you don't have to tell everything if your feeling overwhelmed about this ok?” Bolin kept reassuring you comforting by your side while you saw Mako with two girls.
You gave Bolin a nod then inhaling and exhaling, the police officers let you in into a room you wondered who is gonna investigate and asks you some questions.
When you entered the room, you let out a huff and furrowed your eyebrows alitte bit.
Lin Beifong.
„ please sit.” you obeyed her order as you sat down she kept watching every move you make.
„ so tell me Miss.Y/n, how many men were in there?did they have weapons?..” you nodded softly because you couldn't trust your voice you might cry.
She let out a short hummed before speaking again „ did they touched you in...” you looked down nodding again.
„ but I don't know how many were they some of them had a tattoo.” you spoke.
„ what tattoo did they have?” you told her the symbol of their tattoo and after you told her told she let out growl she knew them.
She imprisoned some of them in jail while the others got away and I gotta tell you they were pain in her ass, she was mad at those gang.
You couldn't help but remember the memory again going to your mind, you eyes become blurry you couldn't help but let a tear fall down.
„ Miss.Y/n hey hey, look at me hey..is this not the first it happened.” she looked at you pity.
You nodded that's when you let out a sob she didn't know what she was doing and thinking, you were crying in her arms. She was trying to tell you everything is gonna be fine and rubbing the back of your head.
She was soft, her hands rubbing your hair and the other hands rubbing your shoulder.
After you cried onto her arms you finally relaxed she handed you her handkerchief, you sneeze onto her handkerchief.
„ I think that will be all, you need to rest after what happened.” she didn't know what she was saying but she felt pity on you.
//
Bolin and Mako took you to your apartment, saying their goodbyes you opened your door and went inside.
You made your way to your refrigerator and open it finding something that your tongue wants finally you found it, beer.
All you want is to drink so you could finally forget everything that happened, because that's always you do forget and act like nothing has ever happened.
You remembered that you have Lin's handkerchief, you don't know how to give it back to her it might look awkward maybe you should give it to her next time you payed visit to Mako and Bolin.
After you drank you were tipsy, you tried going to your bedroom you looked over at the clock it was middle of the night, you let out a sigh.
You stumbled on your way to your bed you mumble that you just want to sleep.
Until you found a cockroach you screamed and rushed on your way out to your apartment you quickly opened the door and you immediately ran away.
Not until you stumbled into someone you heard them say 'watch where you going!' you immediately apologize but not looking into them.
„ Ms.Y/n?” you were shocked to hear your name to someone stranger.
„ Oh ch-cheif beifong, I didn't know your here...what are you exactly doing here?” you fired her questions while she has the same expression that you have also.
„ I live here, how about you?” you also looked at her and smiling.
„ I also live here.” she gave you a stare that 'leave me alone, I'm too tired' you just laughed nervously.
„ Alright, I'll be going then.” you quickly hold her wrist again, she gasped she doesn't let anyone touched her but something about you let's her.
„ I'm really really sorry to uhm bother but can I ask you a favor?” you looked at her pouting.
You hated her but sometimes she's really not bad at all, maybe because it's just her work you thought she's just a workaholic that's why she has an attitude.
Lin sprayed the cockroach then huffing.
„ there you go.” she stood up while you sitted on your couch looking at her.
„ thank you so much Ms.Beifong, again I'm sorry If I bother you-” she immediately raised her hands up and shaking it.
„ don't worry about that. so are you feeling any better now?” you nodded while smiling.
Lin look around for a moment she saw some empty beer on the counter of your kitchen, while you looked at her direction you gasped you put your both hands on your mouth.
Gosh, this is really embarrassing the Cheif Of The Police is in your apartment and seeing some empty beer, she gave you a look.
„ do you have some more?” Lin asked you you were too stunned for a moment to speak, she wanted to drink with you.
„ uhm yeah sure let me just look.”
2 hours passed
„ Yeah that's how I grow up.” you laugh at her actions she gave you a smile.
Spirits she's so beautiful when she smile, you felt butterflies on your stomach. You nicely returnend the smile.
„ Now it's your turn, tell me about yourself.” Lin tapped your shoulder you shook your head declining to tell.
„ nah, It's not even great as yours anyways.” Lin scoff falling from the couch and pouting at you.
She's so clingy when she's drunk.
„ tell me, hey it's alright to not have a great childhood.” she came closer to you, you nodded and started to spoke again.
„ my mom died while giving birth to me, then I grow up with my grandmother and my aunt's and uncle's too,I grew up being a princess to my grandma which led my aunt's,uncle's and cousins jealous at me.” you laughed at the last part but Lin she she wanted you to continue talking.
„ Then at the age of 9 *sigh* I learned that I don't want to grow up like this I don't want to be a person that only sells melons and pineapples I want to reach my goal. But ofcourse they didn't want that...my aunt used to sell me to a man...when my grandmother knew it she genuinely got mad at them.”
„ I wanted to live to have a restaurant, t-to have you know a normal family with a normal life, and when I turned 18 my grandma wanted to me to get married and have a kids already and I wasn't ready yet.”
You sighed and closed your eyes for a moment because you might cry again infront of her, spirits how many times you cried infront of her.
„ you know, I dated someone who wanted family which I didn't want yet so we broke up.” you pop your head to see her.
„ Really? Jeez that's suck.” Lin chuckled at your actions.
„ Why do you want to be here in the city anyways?” Lin tried to change the subject you just shrugged your shoulders.
„ I want to be free.” you got straight to the point.
„ We should probably get to know each other more.” Lin told you and you nodded drunkly.

The Myth of Y/N (Korra x Reader) Part 28
CALM BEFORE THE STORM
Y/N'S POV
Frustration is fuelled within me every second we stay in our apartment. Pacing back and forth, hands clasped, behind my back, I stare daggers into the ground.
"Y/N, relax." Korra suggests, concern in her face.
Relax? How can I relax now?!
After Aiwei escaped, Korra proposed we use Naga to track down the truth seer but Chief Beifong forbid us to do so! She wants to send us back to Republic City so she can protect Korra! Even Suyin agreed with her much to everyone's surprise and now we're leaving tomorrow!
"Every minute we waste, the further that traitor gets away." I grit out, my steps increasing in their speed and intensity. "This is our best chance to catch Zaheer and we are now losing it!"
"None of us are liking it." Mako comments, his voice so bitter that I can practically taste it. "But we have to listen to the Chief's orders."
Unfortunately, he's right.
"I guess so." I concede and I eventually drop to one of the chairs. "She better know what she's doing."
A loud knock brings the scene to a halt.
Who's knocking at this time of night?
Korra opens the door and there, standing by the entrance, is Suyin.
Wait, Suyin?!
"Su."
"You really think Naga could track Aiwei?"
Huh?!
"Definitely."
"Then, here."
In a flash, I see the matriarch handing Korra some keys. Wait, keys?
"There's a jeep packed with supplies on the east gate." Suyin explains. "It's all gassed and ready to go."
Korra, obviously, is confused by all of this. "What? Why?"
Suyin responds immediately. There isn't a hint of hesitation or regret. "Because I want you to hunt down Aiwei and bring him back to me."
WHAT?
Despite my shock, I manage to speak up. "I thought you said-"
"-I said what Lin wanted to hear and I bought you guys some time." She clarifies. "Go. I'll deal with Lin in the morning."
YES! We can finally catch that bastard!
After a quick hug to Suyin from Korra, we all begin to depart. Before I walk past Beifong, I give her a small smile. Despite our differences, despite the arguments, despite everything, at this moment, we are allies. She helped us and I will be grateful for that.
"Thank you."
Suyin, probably having the same thoughts as I did about our relationship, smiles back. "Don't mention it. Now, go!"
I nod and with a quick dash we head off, Korra on Naga and the rest of Team Avatar in the jeep.
The hunt begins.
TIME SKIP
We have been travelling for hours. Once the sky was as black as Vaatu's heart is now as bright and blue as the hope we now have.
Throughout the trip we all managed to have a little bit of rest. We needed it after all the excitement we had back in Zaofu.
The thought of the metal city reminds me of Lin. She's going to be PISSED when she realises we're gone. Spirits, she probably already knows.
Right now, we're at some local Earth Kingdom desert village. Naga managed to track Aiwei to the small area. He must have took a quick stop.
It isn't much. Just a bunch of run-down and withered buildings bunched up close together. Its clear the village hasn't been well-kept by the populace.
"Aiwei has definitely been here." Korra tells us. She then looks at Naga with a grateful smile. "Nice tracking, girl."
"Let's ask around." Mako suggests, already beginning to walk to some sort of tavern. "Maybe someone's seen him."
We all follow, and we enter inside. Just like the outside village, the tavern isn't well kept. The citizens are just as dirty and sketchy as the area.
I look around the area, trying to spot someone who appears to be at least a little trustworthy and-
Uh oh.
"Shit."
My curse catches my friends attention and they all turn to see what I was talking about.
Right by the entrance, there are five posters. Posters that have pictures of each and every member of Team Avatar. Korra, Mako, Bolin, Asami...and me.
"Wanted posters!" Korra exclaims in shock.
Mako leans forward and narrows his eyes. ""Wanted by Her Majesty, the Earth Queen, for crimes against the Kingdom."
Crimes? Oh, you have got to be kidding me!
"The Queen is still pissed about what happened in Ba Sing Se." I growl like an animal. "The fucking nerve to place a bounty on us..."
"Those airbenders won't hers to keep!" Korra angrily barks out. "I swear, if I see her pinchy little queen face again, I am going to..."
"Uhh, guys..."
Asami?
We all turn to see why she's all of a sudden nervous.
Oh...
There, in the tavern, all of the customers are glaring daggers right at us. The dirt, scars, and ripped clothing amplifies the intimidation they already radiate. I even see one pulling out a long, slick sword and another a sharp spear.
Uh oh...
"Lets get out of here." I quickly mutter and in a blink of an eye we all rush out.
Welp, I guess we should continue the trail. No point sticking around this...fun...place.
We eventually reached another town, much larger, tidier, and generally nicer looking than the one we visit before. Apparently it's a place called Misty Palms Oasis. I guess its an oasis in more ways than one after our las location.
But that pales in comparison to what we found.
Naga found something.
Aiwei's jeep crudely hidden beneath the large rocks that spread across the plains.
Bingo.
"This must be Aiwei's jeep." Asami tells us, pointing out the obvious. "He can't be far."
She's right. Aiwei must be in Misty Palms!"
"Let's get this guy." I tell them, cracking my knuckles. "He must be in that settlement over there."
"No." Mako disagrees, hands raised in a soothing gesture. Then, he points to his younger brother. "Bolin and I will investigate the Misty Palms Oasis. You, Korra, and Asami wait here in case he comes back. Besides, we don't want to call too much attention to ourselves."
Dammit. He's right.
Sighing heavily, I relent. "Very well." I reluctantly agree. "I take it you two would be wearing some disguises?"
"Did someone say disguises?!" a very loud and cheery voice calls out, causing Mako to pinch the bridge of his nose and mutter "Oh no..."
Bolin, clearly more excited than his brother, dashes to the bags of supplies Suyin had provided us and then, in a moment of light speed, whips out a yellow raincoat, so bright that it nearly hurts my eyes, and pulls it all over him and proceeds to bring out some green goggles and slaps it on him. A few moments later and Mako does the same.
Um...
Well, uh, it's certainly a disguise...
I mean, it might attract a lot of attention with its colour but at least its something...
Oh dear.
I trade looks with Korra and Asami and its clear we all share the same thoughts about their...disguise.
"Now we need some backstories!" Bolin continues, clasping his hands together and rubbing them back and forth in a preparation gesture. Then, he dramatically places one on his chest in a dramatic sense of sadness. "I'm an ex-United Forces operative named Ting-Ting. War was the only woman I ever loved, until Ivy came along and showed me what real love is. Tragically, she was taken from me by my archenemy Dr. Razor and-"
"-Enough!" Mako interrupts, clearly fed up with his brother's antics, and begins dragging him towards the Misty Palms. "Let's just find Aiwei."
"Good luck, guys." I tell them and just like that they are off to the local area.
Well then.
"Is there anything in his jeep that can help us?" I ask the two women as I begin walking towards the vehicle.
"Only one way to find out." Asami says. "You check the boot and I'll check the glove department. Korra, you watch out for us."
"On it." We both respond at the same time and we get to our tasks. Korra sets herself upon a large boulder while I go to the back of the jeep. In a quick motion, I pull the lid of the boot open and I am greeted with...nothing. Great.
"Nothing in here." I tell them with irritation, slamming the lid shut. "Any luck with you?"
"Not yet. There isn't seem to be anything of-WAIT! I think I found something!"
Oh shit!
"You found something?" Korra speaks up, sliding down the boulder and joining Asami and I.
The CEO of Future Industries pulls out some sort of note and hands it to Korra. What is it with these guys and notes?
"Xai Bau's Grove, sundown." Korra reads aloud carefully. When she finishes, her features light up in excitement. "This must be where and when Aiwei's going to meet Zaheer!"
"Sure sounds like it." I agree, crossing my arms. "Never heard of Xai Bau's Grove before, though."
"Good thing we have a map." Asami points out and then spreads it across the jeep and begins analysing it with precision and care. "All right. Xai Bau's Grove, where are you?"
Our eyes scour the map, draining and drinking the information before us like we dying of thirst. I can't see the name we are looking for. Dammit!
Almost immediately after we begin our search, a couple of blue butterfly-like spirits land on the map, covering portions of the map.
Asami brushes them away with annoyance. "Go away! I'm trying to find something."
Damn straight. Now, where in the spirits is this pla-
WAIT!
SPRITS!
"Hold on a second." I urgently tell her. "Maybe they are trying to tell us something."
"What do you mean?" Korra asks."
Before I answer her, I do a thorough scan of the Earth Kingdom map one more time to make sure I am not mistaken.
I am not.
"Xai Bau's Grove isn't in the Earth Kingdom or anywhere." I finally answer. "It's in the spirit world! That's why it isn't on the map."
Upon my revelation, their features flash with a new understanding. Asami scrolls up the map and places it away. "You're right! That's got to be it."
"We'll wait for Mako and Bolin to return and tell us if Aiwei is here." Korra declares, her voice full of leadership and authority. "If he is here and he's staying in Misty Palms, then we'll wait until he mediates into the Spirit World."
I nod in agreement. Sounds like a plan.
Eventually, Mako does return but by myself. Before I can panic, he tells us they found out Aiwei is hiding in an inn and Bolin is keeping an eye on him. We tell him of our own discoveries and we agree to stake his room out until sundown and quietly enter his place.
We manage to book a room ourselves opposite to Aiwei's. A perfect place for a stakeout.
Well, almost perfect.
Because this room is fucking awful.
Literally, it's so small its ridiculous with only one bed. Like, its okay for one person I suppose. But still! Naga is literally filling up nearly half of the damn room.
"I'd just like to say, for the record, this room is definitely not perfect." Bolin speaks out our thoughts but is immediately hit in the face by the polar bear dog's tail.
"Understatement of the century." I dryly comment and glance at Korra and Mako peeking out of the window.
Bolin continues his (understandable) complaints. "I thought stakeouts were supposed to be exciting. This isn't. At all!" To avoid total boredom, he begins searching through the room but then gets all excited out of nowhere. "Hey, look! A Pai Sho board! Mako, you want to play?"
"Kind of busy, bro." Mako quickly refuses, focusing on spying on Zaofu's traitor.
"I'll play."
I glance at Asami, and I see her lit up with excitement and anticipation. I didn't know she played Pai Sho.
A few minutes pass and, as I silent observe the multiple games between Bolin and Asami, I come to learn that the CEO of Future Industries is actually a Pai Sho master or, at least, a master of the version she plays. Turns out Pai Sho has multiple versions, which now I realise isn't really surprising since the game is apparently over a thousand years old, and Bolin played a way, WAY different version. Sato's version is slow, methodical, focused on strategizing. Bolin's is fast, reckless, and little thinking. The earthbender doesn't like this, obviously, and seriously asked Korra to standardise Pai Sho rules. The sarcasm she shot back at him went completely over his head.
"So, we know at sundown Aiwei is going to go to the Spirit World." I state, glancing in the directions of Korra and Mako who are staring at the truth seer's own accommodation. "We go to his place and you just meditate into the Spirit World?"
"That's the best plan I can think of." Korra responds, still gazing through the glassless window. She doesn't sound worried at all despite what happened back at Zaofu.
"Korra, you were nearly kidnapped last night." I tell her with complete seriousness. "I don't like the idea of you confronting Zaheer in the Spirit World all alone."
This time, my best friend turns to me with complete determination in her gaze to me. "Y/N, I have to. This is the only way we can find out more about these guys and stop them."
"I know that." I shake my head. "I just..."
I trail off, not really knowing what to say. I'm overthinking this. It's not like Korra can be taken in the Spirit World. Neither she nor Zaheer would have their bending.
But Korra looked so vulnerable back in Zaofu...
I don't want her to be in that state again.
"Maybe I can come with you?" I weakly ask, already knowing the answer.
Korra shakes her head gently. "It's best if I go alone. By myself it will be easier to hide and might give Zaheer a false sense of security."
I nod solemnly. Dammit.
Then, a light touch of her fingers press upon my chin and I see her tilt my chin upwards. I see a small smile on her lips and comfort in her ocean eyes.
"I'll be fine."
Yeah. Yeah, she will. Of course.
"I know." I tell her, a smile slowly spreading on my lips too.
"Ugh!"
And, like that, the tender moment is ruined by Bolin's scream of frustration. Sounds like Asami has defeated him yet again.
A quick glance and, unsurprising, I was correct as I see Bolin laid down on his back, face buried in his palms, and groaning quietly while Asami has a triumphant smile on her face, arms crossed.
Hm. Okay then.
Displaying a big and cocky smirk, I walk over to Bolin and sit down, cross-legged, next to him. "My turn."
"What?" Bolin squeals out, shooting straight back with wide eyes. "Don't do it, Y/N! Asami is too skilled! She's undefeatable!"
"I'm afraid he's right, Y/N." Asami agrees with complete arrogance, her triumphant smile now a smirk. "I'll destroy you just like I did to Bolin."
Oh, really now?
I cross my arms in defiance. "Then you won't mind if I have a go, oh so Pai Sho Master?"
She chuckles at my mockery title I give her. "If you don't mind losing then sure."
Oh, I'm not going to be the one losing.
"I didn't know you played Pai Sho." Asami points out as we reset the board.
"I played a few games of it back on Air Temple Island." I tell her, placing my own pieces back to their starting positions. "Jinora taught me how to play."
"Did you and Korra play together?"
I give her a sly smile. "You really think Korra will play Pai Sho? A game of patience?"
"Hey!" Korra barks out with an offended look, mouth agape. "I can be patient!"
"You can." I concede. "But you can't be patient enough to play Pai Sho."
Asami chuckles. "Sorry, Korra, but I have to agree with Y/N on this one."
"Asami!"
The jet-black woman and I gaze at each other as we hide our snickers behind our mouth as we try to contain our laughter at the sight of Korra's offended and infuriated look.
When the moment subsides, we go back to our board and not too long afterwards we are finished with resetting our arena.
Bolin slumps away melancholily and moves to the side of the two of us and then gives me a dedicated stare. "Avenge me, Y/N!"
I give him a serious gaze that shouldn't really be serious in the first place given the situation. "I will."
I turn to Asami, the woman giving me a hardened glare, and I smirk.
"Your move."
Unlike the previous matches, this one lasts for what feels like a lifetime. Each move her and I make is coordinated, organised, and with purpose. The arrogance that once filled our forms has now drained away as we realise that our opponents are actually good. Really good.
"This is the longest Pai Sho game I have ever seen." Bolin comments.
"This is the longest game I've played." Asami agrees.
"Ditto." I add. I then manage to retrieve a drip of arrogance I had and smirk. "I thought you said you were going to destroy me?"
"Don't get cocky." Asami warns, smiling dangerously. "I don't see you doing any better."
Hm. Touché.
We continue but no more teasing comments are made. This game is dead silent now as we make our moves one by one, piece by piece, strategy by strategy.
I don't know how much time has passed but eventually we reach a deadlock. Our number of pieces are low and equal.
"This can go either way!" Bolin announces, voice full of shock and anticipation.
Asami and I glare at each other, intensity in our eye-lock so powerful and thick you can slice it with a katana.
The sound of an excited fire ferret is the only warning we hear and in a blink of an eye, tiles from the game fly into the air while the board acts as a resting pad for the cute pet.
NO!
"PABU!" Asami, Bolin, and I yell, startling Korra and Mako. In a fit of anger, I swing my arms upward into the air but this accidentally sends Pabu and the Pai Sho board and tiles right into Asami's face!
"Asami, you okay?!" I tell her, moving Pabu away from her and giving it to Bolin.
"I'm fine." The CEO of Future Industries groans out, moving strands of hair away from her face.
"Shhh, guys!" Mako sternly orders us. "We don't want Aiwei hearing us!"
"But Mako you should have seen it!" Bolin exclaims, despair in his voice. "It was the most intense game of Pai Sho ever and Pabu ruined it! Now we'll never know who would have won!"
"I'm sorry the game was ruined but just keep it quiet." Mako tells his brother, not having any of it.
Welp. Thanks Pabu. The game between Asami and I will forever be inconclusive. Just peachy.
"I'm sorry for blasting all of that stuff at you." I apologise. "It was an accident."
Asami, now finally tidied herself, gives me a tired smile. "It's okay. I'm just surprised at the strength of that blast. You've really progressed fast with your airbending, huh?"
Warmth rushes to my cheeks in embarrassment and I scratch the back of my neck. "Eh, I'm not that good. I suck compared to Tenzin, Korra, and even the air kids."
"Don't be too hard on yourself." Asami refutes. "For a novice, you're great! I mean, remember back at Zaofu? You deflected an explosion!"
True...I did do that. To be honest I'm surprised I was able to do it. I wasn't even thinking when I did it. I just...did it.
"She's right." Korra agrees, giving me a proud smile. "Not any newbie can do that. You'll be a great airbender."
The heat in my face intensifies and engulfs into flames. I really hope I don't look as red as I am feeling.
"T-Thanks." I tell her, shyly looing downwards. Then, in a surprising boost of confidence, I chuckle. "Sprits, I'm going to have a big arrow on my forehead someday. Imagine that."
"I can imagine it." She tells me with a slight teasing smile. Then, the smile shifts into something tender. "And we'll all be there when you get them."
"You said it." Bolin agrees, wrapping an arm over my shoulders. "An airbending master in Team Avatar?! How cool is that?!"
Huh. Me, an airbending master?
I close my eyes and imagine myself as that. Me, wearing big, bold, red and yellow robes with a cloak similar to Tenzin's that signify my allegiance to the Air Nation with bright blue arrow tattoos all over my body and being clear as day on my hands and forehead.
"Yeah." I tell everyone, giving them a smile. "It would be cool."
"Uh, guys." Mako announces. "I hate to break the moment but it's pretty much sundown. We got to make our move now!"
The friendly atmosphere shatters as we are brought back to the reality of the situation.
It's sundown?! Already?! How long were Asami and I playing Pai Sho for?!
Standing up straight, I gaze at the outside world and I see the all-too familiar orange glow of a sunset.
"Lets do this." Korra declares and she starts marching out of the room. One by one, my friends leave until I am alone.
Taking a deep, hard, breath and release it, I follow.
Korra will confront Zaheer.
We will find out who he and his friends are.
We will find them.
And we will stop them.
One way or another.

And that's it!
Feedback is appreciated! :D
See you all in the next chapter!

Searching (fluff)
Lin walked around the perimeter of her house, as she did every time she came home. She confirmed that Tenzin’s key was still in its safe spot for the month. The drains were clear, the back gate locked and undisturbed. The recent rains had kept the garden in good shape. She expected she would get to start harvesting a few items within the next few weeks.
Satisfied, she pulled back her boots and stepped on the bare earth beside the entrance. For a short moment, she simply grounded herself in her small sanctuary. Only Tenzin and Kya even knew where she lived. Kya had almost talked her into inviting Mako over, but he would just open the floodgates to the rest of the youngsters.
She wasn’t ready to share.
Besides, only Tenzin knew that Kya was sometimes in the city for days before she made it as far as the Island.
With a sigh, Lin washed her feet, and let herself inside.
Two hours later, she locked her briefcase in her safe and stretched. One last patrol confirmed that she was as safe as usual, and would be able to sleep.
“Good night, Kya,” she whispered as she watered the plant Kya had installed beside her bed.
She sighed, and lay down for the night.
***
She startled awake as she felt the bed shift. A soft finger touched her lips, and her eyes fought the shadows hiding the face of…
Kya
Lin sat up. “Kya? You didn’t tell me you were coming.”
“I drove all night to get to you.”
Kya leaned down to kiss her. “You weren’t at the station, or at the Island, or at the market, or at the bar… Do you know I’ve been searching for you for hours? Only Lin Beifong could hide just by going home.”

Asami groans as she wakes up. Her mind starts to work and she realizes she is laying on someone. For a moment she smiles and is just so comfortable.
Then a thought comes to her.
'who am I laying on?'
Blinking in the light she looks up and sees that she is laying on top of Lin beifong. Her head laying on her stomach and body across her legs
She had been staying with Lin since amons defeat a few weeks ago.
"good morning" Lin mono toned not stoping to read her book.
Asamis eyes open wide. "It's morning?!? I need to-"
"hush" Lin rest her hand on the girls shoulder. "It's not morning. You have been out for a couple hours. I was reading on the couch and you came home and just fell on me. I was lucky I had my book."
Asami put her head down In embarrassment. Realizing after a moment that she was trying to bury her face in line abbs.
'fuck she is ripped' the thought bounced around as she became more embarrassed.
"calm down kido" this time Lin brought her hand to Asamis hair. She ran her fingers through them which made Asami smile. "I'm sure today was just as bad as yesterday at work. If you need to rest here I don't mind."
The engineer smiled but did finally push her self up. Lin brought her legs in and they where now both sitting on the couch in Lina apartment. Asami in her work cloths still and Lin in her normal evening were of white tank top and sweat pants.
"the staffing shortages are stopping everything." Asami began rubbing her eyes. "We can't get people so we cant fill the orders we have and since we cant fill those we can't get new ones. Its just a mess..."
Lin wanted to reach out to the girl. The young woman. Who had gone through so much, her dad, her lively hood, even her boyfriend. It all came crashing down so fast.
"well you know you can stay here as long as you like."
Asami turned and smiled at the officer. She opened her mouth but closed again. Lin could tell she had come up with an idea.
"don't move" Asami got up with a stretch and walked down the hall to the guest room she had been staying in.
Lin raise the brow the shuffling nosies she heard but a few minutes later Asami emerged again. This time her hair was down, her makeup was washed off and her work clothes had been replaced but pajama pants and red shirt sleeve shirt.
She also had a comically large blanket draped over her shoulders. Lin smiled and stretched her legs out again. Asami resumed her place across Lin and smuggled under the blanket.
Lin brought her hand up to Asamis head and stroked her had through the raven hair.
"so what are you reading?" Asami asked now laying comfortably on Lin.
Lin could stay like this all night.
"a history of the kyoshi warriors" Lin read the cover
"oh fun. Read it out loud?"
"of course" Lin smiled.

Ok guys, I deleted the original asks by accident but here is what the Nonnie wanted. I couldn't choose either, so naturally I did all three lol
Thank you so much for the prompt! It was really fun to write a Lin x reader story, I’ve never had the opportunity to write one 💜
If you guys enjoy this let me know, because I could definitely see continuing this story.
Fluff 9: “Are we on a date right now?”
Fluff 11: “Are you flirting with me?” “You finally noticed?”
Kisses 13: When One Person’s Face Is Scrunched Up, And The Other One Kisses Their Lips/Nose/Forehead
I had been in Republic City for twenty years…and it still never ceased to fill me with me with a sense of awe. Awe at the height of the buildings, the satomobiles that would glide up and down the roads, at all hours of the night. It was home and it was peaceful, even in its most overwhelming moments.
But in these early morning moments, when the sun had yet to rise and most of the city was sleeping, I understood why this bustling cosmopolitan city was the home that my small village had never been. I came from a small coastal village, one that was a stop for small vessels traveling North, a place stop, refuel, and perhaps rest for the night. Nothing more and nothing less. It was like the colonies that made up the city she now inhabited; different cultures with different traditions thriving as one, albeit with a little less conflict.
I could just see the beginnings of the sunrise peeking over the clouds rolling off the water; I was much later than I normally was. My internal clock was off and decided that I needed an extra hour of sleep; whether this is true I will neither confirm nor deny. I hadn’t realized just how late I was until I rounded the corner and began walking the last stretch towards my shop I cursed inwardly as I saw the silhouette of a person leant against the brick, ankles crossed in front of them.
Chief of Police Lin Beifong was one of my more loyal customers, she showed every morning, before the sun, to retrieve tea or coffee, whatever she was in the mood for, along with a few egg custards tarts. Besides the occasional trip for work or the more common injury, she would stroll into my shop shortly after I opened it myself. As I came closer, I could see the gleam of the lamp light on her metal armor, the yellow of the trim and gold of her badge blinding. I riffled through my bag, grasping the ribbon with the shop key on it, reaching my hand out and fluidly inserting the key into the lock, turning it softly.
“Sorry Chief,” I mumbled, pushing the door open slightly and gesturing for her to proceed me.
“Good morning, Y/N,’ she grumbled softly, the look on her face was a mix of concern and curiosity.
I flicked the lights on, wincing slightly at the harsh artificial light. I could feel her eyes on me as I hung my bag on its usual hook and drew my apron off the other, looping the top over my head and crossing the ties in the back before settling them in front. As I moved behind the counter, reaching for the pastry box and parchment paper, her voice reached my ears, a little louder this time.
“It’s alright,’ she insisted, “is everything ok, Y/N?”
I waved my hand dismissively, gesturing that everything was fine.
Even if it wasn’t she didn’t need to know that she was just making idle conversation. She didn’t need to know that I had been having trouble sleeping. This wasn’t new for me, it’s how my anxieties tended to manifest themselves. She wasn’t truly interested, and she didn’t deserve to be blindsided with my problems, we were friends in a loose sense of the word. She came by my shop every morning and I provided her with her daily vices. She would thank me, and the cycle would start again the next day…nothing to write home about.
“I’m fine,” I insisted, “are you feeling coffee this morning or tea? I have this new blend of chai from Kyoshi Island that is amazing with or without milk…”
As I turned to face the pastry case, opening it so I could slip two tarts into the cardboard box, my eyes locked with those of the metalbender’s; I could tell that she wasn’t going to let the subject drop. Her arms were crossed against her chest, the metal creaking intermittently, the pressure from either her bending or muscles shifting minutely.
She tilted her head then, considering me carefully, not just the question of coffee or tea, but almost as if she was assessing if I was telling the truth. Her eyes traveled along my body and suddenly I felt slightly self-conscious. I smooth the apron down over my hips, the thick sweater I wore underneath unexpectedly feeling suffocating, the messy bun on the crown of my head mildly embarrassing, and the creases of sleep most likely still adorning my cheek mortifying.
“Chief?” I gently questioned, drawing her out of whatever thoughts were floating around in her head.
She looked at her metal boots, scuffing the floor a little, the red tint of a blush could barely be seen on her cheeks. I busied myself with removing the tarts from the pastry case, trying desperately to hide the shy smile that now graced my lips. I was trying to give her time to regroup, for her to act as if she wasn’t just caught staring.
“How about the chai,” her voice was soft when she finally answered, “I’m sure coffee will come later in the day.”
I nodded as I closed the pastry box and turned to the back counter once again. I filled the kettle methodically and then began to heat the metal with my bending, a small flame produced in my palm, I could feel the material heating as I increased the heat marginally. I could hear the person behind me shifting slightly, the creak of her metal uniform more pronounced this time.
With the water a near perfect temperature, I carefully poured the scalding water into the to go cup, gently covering the tea bag. The warm smell of cinnamon and cardamom hit me instantly, I in haled slightly. I secured the lid and turned back to the front facing the Chief again and slid both objects across the counter towards her.
“On the house Chief,” I smiled sweetly, “again I’m sorry I was so late this morning.”
She froze as she was drawing her wallet out of her pocket, her eyes narrow imperceptibly.
“Nonsense,” she claimed, “you open the shop early for me every morning, let me at least pay you.”
My smile grew, “Nope,” the last syllable said with an audible pop.
Through all the years and all our interactions, I knew that the Chief of Police knew exactly how stubborn I was, I rivaled her in that regard. Like when I secretly created a pastry spread in the office oof certain metalbender, not wanting to draw too much attention to the gesture. She had tried to interrogate me into who had hired me, yet my lips remained sealed; Councilman Tenzin had just wanted to surprise his friend on her birthday. She deserved that much at least.
Or the time the storefront window had been broken. I refused to let the police department print the shop and comb through the wreckage for evidence, it was going to take too long, and I had customers to feed. What was gone was gone and it was time to move on and rebuild. After that incident, we both developed a certain type of respect for one another.
The stubbornness also showed on the nights when we’d occasionally play pai sho with one another. The lights in the shop would stay lit for hours, the Chief encouraging me to hurry up and decide about a specific move at times; I wasn’t to be rushed to say the least.
She regarded me quietly, I could see the wheels in her brain, trying to come up with some sort of a compromise. Her lips quirked slightly, and I knew she had reached a decision.
“Fine,” she relented, “but I have a request.”
I tilted my head curiously; through the years the Chief had brought me recipes to try, and I was interested in what she had in store for me this time. It was a challenge that wasn’t exactly acknowledged between us.
I nodded my head, “Sure thing, Chief.”
“I’m entertaining someone tonight in my condo, and I have it on good authority that they love red bean buns.”
This time my own face twisted in a smile. She knew I made the best in the city…most certainly because they were my favorite.
“Would you like to pick them up or have them delivered?”
At this question she seemed to hesitate, I knew how much easier it would be for her if they were delivered, but I also knew what a private person she was. She was still weighing the pros and cons of each option when I interjected kindly.
“I can do the delivery Chief, on my way home.”
I watched her shoulders slump in relief and then heard a faint “Thank you,” escape her lips.
My smile grew at the relief in her eyes, “Is there a specific time?”
She bit her lip subtly…well that was something.
“Is six, ok?” she questioned.
I had a few custom orders to fulfill, but those could all be done by noon. That left me plenty of time to not only create the shop inventory for the next day but the Chief’s order as well. I nodded and reached to the side of the cash register, producing an ink pen and notepad for her to scribble her address on. As The Chief pulled a few bills out of her wallet, I couldn’t help the flutter I felt at her smile, this one was more like the ones at the end of our pai sho nights, when she’d wish me well as I strode off down the street.
She laid the currency on top of the note pad and gently pushed them towards me. I gathered, the money and began to count her change before I realized she was already heading in the direction of the door. She turned to look over her shoulder, piercing green eyes connecting with my own, a mischievous glint visible.
“Oh, and Y/N? After all the time we’ve known one another, I think it’s time you called me Lin.”
And with that she slipped through the door, the gentle ringing of the bell the only indicator someone had once been standing there.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The day passed by in a blur, working on the custom orders…and maybe a little of daydreaming with it. My longtime friend and shop manager Kiki was teasing me relentlessly…she always did when I regaled her with my encounters of the famous Republic City Chief of Police. After the second batch of puff pastry that had to be thrown away because I had over worked it, she told me not so subtly to get my head out of the clouds.
Eli, my assistant baker, chuckled softly and his smile in the egg white he was currently trying to whip. The sound of the wire whisk making a metallic tink every time it met the side of the glass mixing bowl. They gave each other a knowing look they thought I wouldn’t notice; they did that a lot when it came to me and the Chief. I sighed and shook my head softly.
The nerves that had started as a flutter in my belly this morning were slowly transforming into tight knots. I had never been to the Chief’s…no, Lin’s apartment before. We were friends, but not on that level, we weren’t that intimate. It was no secret to myself or the two friends who worked with me what the extent of my feelings for the metalbender.
We got along well, more than likely due to the extreme hours we both tended to keep. She would be up well into the night catching criminals and examining crime scenes. I was up experimenting with new tastes and pastry types, sometimes sleeping in the back office behind the kitchen. We were both undoubtedly devoted to our crafts, honing them through the years until they became second nature to us.
It doesn’t matter. We are from two completely different worlds, two completely different upbringings, and two completely different people. She is the daughter of Toph Beifong for spirits sake. She was engaged to Councilman Tenzin at one point. She calls the late Avatar, the late Councilman Sokka, and Firelord Zuko her uncles. She refers to Master Katara and Kyoshi Warrior Suki her aunts. She has been chief of Police longer than I have been in the city. She was an heir to the Beifong fortune and empire.
I grew up in a small coastal village, selling my pastries to make ends meet. I left the village to come to the city, escaping an abusive father and an absent mother, when I was only seventeen. I was lucky enough to find a job in a bakery whose owner took pity on me, and then later sold me the business.
We had nothing in common, but I couldn’t help but feel the sense of anticipation in my belly. Seeing the Chief, in any capacity, could make me feel as if I was walking on air. She was unbelievably kind and so compassionate, contrary to the grumpy exterior she exuded. She was always bringing me a book that she thought I’d like…sometimes it was flowers that she said would brighten up the bakery. Other times, like when we were playing pai sho, she’d bring take out, knowing that I was notorious for forgetting to eat when I was busy (Pot? Kettle?).
What if she was entertaining a passing dignitary, on their way back home?
What if she was on a date?
I’m not sure if I could handle that.
As soon as I thought the words, I chastised myself; I had no claim to the Chief, she wasn’t mine and I wasn’t hers. I usually could keep a better handle on my thoughts and feelings regarding the metalbender, but today I seemed to have been doomed from the start, the tardiness this morning was throwing everything off.
By the time I was tying the green ribbon on the box contained the Chief’s buns, I looked to the clock surprised to see that it was half past five. If I wanted the delivery to be on time I’d have to leave soon. I pushed the door to the kitchen gently and told Eli I was getting to leave.
He raised his hand in a gesture that at once told me that he had heard me and something like a dismissal. I chuckled when I saw the flour fall from his fingers, creating clouds in the air, coating the floor of the kitchen in a sea of white.
I moved towards the hooks on the wall, listening as the kitchen door swung shut. As I replaced my apron, I fluidly removed my tote, gathering the box from the counter and placing it securely inside. I continued through the shop, closing the door behind me muffling the sound of the bell as my key turned and secured the lock.
The sunset was just beginning to pink the sky over Yue Bay, the wind collecting the moisture as it rolled over it and through the city. I drew my sweater closer to ward off the slight chill and set off in the direction of the Chief’s building.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As I approached the building, I couldn’t help but gasp. While I had walked by it several times on my way to and from the shop, I had never given it a second thought. I never thought I’d get to see what lay inside. It was tall and modern looking, the metal on the outside reflecting the colors of the setting sun, a revolving door lead into the lobby where I was greeted by a doorman.
“How can I help you, Miss?” he questioned politely.
“Umm,” I began, still a little unsure, “I have a delivery for Chief Beifong?”
He smiled slightly, “Miss Y/N?”
At my nod, his smile grew, and he led me towards another metal door, presumedly the elevator.
“The Chief is expecting you, her condo is on the tenth floor, door number six.”
I nodded again as the doors opened silently and stepped over the threshold cautiously. The doorman waved and the doors slid closed just as silently. The ride wasn’t long, but it was just enough for the flutters in my belly to return. I could feel the machinery come to a stop and was already striding through the doors before the fully opened.
The lengthy hallway beyond was plainly decorated in muted greys, every so often this was disrupted by a potted plant. The doors I passed we sporadic, but each had a number, I counted until I reached door six. Glancing at my watch I confirmed I was just one time and rose my fist to knock on the door, I was surprised to find it metal. I chuckled at this, but was I really that surprised?
A few moments passed before I could hear the lock disengage and the door swing inward slightly. Although there was no one beyond the threshold and I hesitated before a familiar voice rang out from somewhere in the apartment.
“Come on in, I’m just in the kitchen, follow the hallway.”
I bit my lip; I wasn’t sure this was appropriate, I felt like I wasn’t supposed to be here. Surely shed be in the middle of cooking and her company would be with her, I could just drop the buns and run.
I slipped through the door and shut it smoothly; I bent at the waist removing my shoes and retrieving the pastry box from my bag before venturing farther down the hallway. My steps were silent as I walked slowly, the stone of the floors cold through the wool of my socks. At last, I rounded the corner of the hallway and stopped short.
I was in a gorgeous open plan apartment, the kitchen, living room, dining room, and breakfast nook were all combined with no walls. The back half of the apartment was completely windows, which gave whoever was looking a stunning view of Yue Bay, part of the mountains, and Air Temple Island, all a glow from the setting sun. The interior walls of the sitting room were covered in floor to ceiling bookshelves, a well-worn leather couch and two matching armchairs. One of which had a book perched precariously on the arm and a light grey blanket laid against the back.
I turned to see the large kitchen, dominated by a large island in the middle and a rack of hanging pots and pans above it. Stood at the stove, with her back to me was the Chief, black slacks stretched taut across her hips and backside, a forest green sweater, not that dissimilar to the one I wore, hung loose at the waist. She turned to look at me over her shoulder and I was speechless…well more than I already had been.
“Y/N,” she smiled, my name rolling off her tongue, “how was the rest of your day?”
She moved the pot on the stove to the back burner and turned to face me fully. She drew her arms in front of her, crossing them, but gently resting them on her abdomen. I paused before answering, confused, and overwhelmed as the knots in my stomach intensified.
“Um, ok…uneventful after this morning actually.”
She hummed, the sound rushing straight to my head. It was delicious, I wanted her to make the sound again. I shook my head faintly, trying to clear the thoughts that had come to my mind without my consent.
Her smile grew just a fraction, “Would you like something to drink? Wine? Water? Tea?”
The look on my face must have been a sight because she laughed out loud. The sound was warm and low, amused, and sensual all at once.
“What’s the matter?” she questioned.
I swallowed hard, “Aren’t you expecting company?”
Her smile faltered a bit. She tilted her head like she had this morning, examining my face closely.
“I am…” she drawled.
I nodded again, glancing down at my socks, patting my hair nervously.
“I should probably head out then…”
The Chief was still looking at me, and this time I could see the realization come into her eyes. She looked down at her feet, shuffling the bare appendages self-consciously, her arms tightening on her chest. I frowned at that; she was obviously uncomfortable.
“Something wrong Chief?”
She flinched, imperceptibly at the title, if I hadn’t been watching her so closely, I would have missed it.
She looked up quickly, her eyes wide before she could school her face. She plastered on a smile, this one a lot less genuine than the others I’d been receiving. I walked towards the island separating us, placing the box of red bean buns on the counter, waiting patiently for her to answer.
She rubbed the back of her neck; it must be a nervous tick of hers.
“No, she,” said quietly, “I was just…well I mean…I was hoping you’d join me for dinner?”
Stunned did not even begin to describe what I was. I could feel my body physically shutting down, the noises in the apartment began to fade, becoming muffled and distant. The only thing that brought me back to reality was the murmur of my name.
“Y/N,” she whispered, “I am so sorry…I didn’t…I thought...”
The Chief trailed off, biting her lip while trying to gain control over her own emotions. She wasn’t looking at me anymore, her cheeks pink from embarrassment. It was that something clicked in my mind.
“You were flirting with me?”
She looked up and as we connected eyes, a small smile began to show, she shook her head in the affirmative slowly.
“I have been for quite a while, and you finally noticed.”
I swallowed, trying to force the lump in my throat to go down, trying to regain my composure in the face of such a startling realization.
I looked around the open space once more, noticing the candles that were perched on every available surface. Finally registering the soft music floating out of the record player in the corner by the bookshelves. Then my eyes finally landed on the dining table, where two places were set, not overtly elegant but romantic, nonetheless.
I looked back at the Chief, who had made her way around the island while padding on soundless feet and was now standing directly Infront of me. I felt my eyes widen in recognition.
“Are we on a date right now?”
Her answering smile, now full in her face, made slight lines appear at the corner of her eyes. Her tone was soft, melodic as she answered my question.
“Only if you want it to be,” she intoned quietly, “you weren’t exactly aware of the situation until a few moments ago, so I’ll understand if you say no.
While I hadn’t understood the repercussions this order would bring, I wasn’t against this…I wanted this date. With starting clarity, I realized that Lin wanted this too…she wanted me.
I quirked an eyebrow, “You aren’t getting off that easy, Chief.”
She laughed again, tenderly reaching up to cup my face and brought our foreheads to rest against one another. She her nose against my own, the resulting sensation causing me to scrunch mine and her to place a gentle kiss on the bridge. Slowly she leaned down further and captured my lips.

Not Normal.
Part One, Part Two, Part Three
Not gonna lie, this whole fic is me projecting just how bad I want a massage.
Summary: “I’m not having you break my back if yours is already busted.”
The corner of her mouth curls up in a smirk, but only for a moment. “I’m not some fragile, old lady. I know my limits.”
You lift your chin and stare her down. “I’m not consenting.”
Lin scowls and lets out an irritated huff. “Then what the hell are you doing here?”
It stings, just a bit, but you shrug it off and turn to leave. “I’ll let you rest.” You make it halfway to the door, then stop when an idea occurs to you. “Actually...”
Lin looks up when you walk back into the sitting room. “What, change your mind?”
You roll your eyes. “No --but there might be something else I can do for you.”
AKA you get Lin to agree to some self-care, for once in her life.
Pairing(s): Lin Beifong x Reader.
Rating: T on account of my love of swear words.
Word count: 4.5k.
There’s a certain element of “razzle dazzle” that comes with “seeing” --or, perhaps more accurately, being fucked by--Lin Beifong.
You know that the Beifongs are an old money family; hell, everyone in the world practically knows it. The flying boar crest pops up in nearly every major Earth Kingdom enterprise, from mining, to textiles, to political halls.
Lin, despite her staunch pragmatism, is no exception. Her apartment is in the nicest complex in the city --one of the nicest in the world, even--where rent goes for several tens of thousands of yuan a month. She drives the latest model Satomobile (and even with her personal acquaintanceship with Asami Sato, it’s no small financial investment). The fixtures in her apartment --what of them there are, given Lin’s leanings toward minimalism--are all high end, from her furniture, to her bed sheets, to the toiletries that neatly line the built-in shelf in her shower.
And, if she has an occasion to stay somewhere other than her apartment, her tastes don’t waver in the slightest.
According to Lin --who’d given you a short, gruff answer when you’d asked the first time about why she’d invited you to the Four Elements and not her apartment--it’s because of the Spirit Vine entanglement that’s taken over a good chunk of the city. Whenever she has to work in the outer reaches of Republic City, she stays in a hotel suite until everything’s resolved since the drive back to her apartment has practically tripled.
(Personally, you’re not complaining. It’s not every day you get to sweat up the sheets in a bed of a five star hotel room.)
You stride up the steps to the entrance of the hotel, a spring in your step. Your mind’s already awhirl with countless options for the evening; all of them end with your ability to walk being severely impaired.
(It’s the small things in life.)
The front desk staff already knows you (a credit to how often Lin wrecks your back). A crisply dressed concierge member hands you a heavy metal key when you detour to the desk, then gives you a polite “Have a pleasant stay” as you head over to the elevator banks.
It’s a long, tortuous two minutes to the penthouse.
The penthouse comes with its own butler --something you know rankles Lin, but it’s hotel policy. They greet you when you step off the elevator and usher you into the sitting room.
Lin’s there, stretched out on a velvet upholstered sofa with a pillow propped under her head. Her arms are crossed over her chest, and her mouth is set into a tight scowl.
You can already feel the bruises on your thighs; a shudder runs down your spine. “Rough day?”
Lin grunts, then tries to sit up --only to gasp in pain and stop halfway.
You frown, alarmed. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Lin spits through gritted teeth. She winces as she forces herself to finish sitting up and settles against the couch gingerly. “It’s just my hip.”
You cross your arms over your chest and arch one eyebrow at her. “Somehow, I doubt that.”
“I said I’m fine,” she snaps.
“I’m not having you break my back if yours is already busted.”
“Like what?”
“I do have a job aside from letting you fuck my brains out,” you quip, which gets a terse chuckle from the older woman. “I’m a healer. Massage therapy and chiropractic adjustment, with a specialty in dealing with injury and scar tissue rehabilitation.”
Lin stares blankly at you. “Oh.”
You do an internal victory dance; it’s not everyday you manage to surprise Lin Beifong. “I might be able to get you some pain relief.” You purse your lips when her expression sours and put your hands on her hips. “Pride isn’t worth pain, Lin.”
She opens her mouth to argue --then winces again and sighs. “Fine.”
You nod --after a moment to process your shock. “Okay. I’ll need to pick up a couple things from the office I work in.”
She waves one hand and tips her head back against the couch. “Fine.”
You stare at her for a beat, then turn on your heel and head to the door before she can change her mind.
***
It’s times like this that you’re grateful for the invention of the phone.
Thanks to the Spirit Vine blockages and rush hour traffic, it takes an hour to get to your office. You call Lin from there to let her know that’ll likely take you a while to get back --which she accepts with little more than a grunt--then pack up what you need.
Thank Spirits for the invention of the portable massage table, too.
By the time you get back to the Four Elements, the sun is setting (although, for late winter, that’s not surprising). Your foot taps against the floor of the elevator car as it whirs past the countless floors to the penthouse. As soon as the doors open, you exit --the butler lets you into the penthouse proper--and head straight for the sitting room.
Lin’s still there. She’s laying on the couch in the dark with one arm over her eyes.
“I need to turn the light on so I can set up.”
She grunts in response.
You turn on a table lamp, then start setting up your massage table. You keep glancing over at Lin, try to suss out what’s ailing her.
She’s tense --but, then, Lin’s almost always some sort of tense. Her jaw is clenched tight, and her hands are curled into fists. Her whole body looks keyed up, almost like relaxing hurts.
You realize she hasn’t taken her arm away from her eyes. “Light sensitive headache?”
Another grunt.
“Does talking hurt?” When she grunts again, you tut softly in sympathy. You secure the last leg of the massage table, then pick up your fur skein you use to hold water (it’s easier than toting around a bowl) and amble over to the couch. You crouch next to her, study her face and where she’s holding tension for a moment, then quietly ask, “Is it your scars?”
Lin tenses --likely on reflex, you’ve seen it in several trauma patients--but grits out, “Partially.”
“Alright.” You bend some water out of your skein. “I’m going to try to get you some relief so you can open your eyes and talk, okay?” When she nods, you continue. “I’ll need to work on your face, head, and neck. Is it alright if I touch you?”
Lin purses her lips, then takes her arm away from her eyes and nods.
You gently place your hands against her cheeks and use the water to feel along the tissue and muscle there. You can feel the scars --the angry, inflamed, knotted stripes of tissue that streak across her right cheek--and, sure enough, when you start massaging them gently, you can feel the pull of tension shooting into the surrounding muscles, up her forehead and scalp, and down into her neck.
“Yeah, that’s a gnarly one,” you murmur, mostly to yourself, as you try to find the root knot. You move one hand to Lin’s neck and start pressing your fingers against it. “Did you take a hit to the right side of your face recently?”
Lin’s lips curl into a tight smirk. “Got slugged in the face by a perp.”
“Ouch.” You suck a breath through your teeth. “Yeah, that would probably do it.”
“Should see the other guy.”
“Oh, I already knew they’re worse off.” You smile when she chuckles, then focus on feeling out the tension in her shoulders and neck. “Okay, I think I’ve got at least part of the root here. I’ll be able to get the rest of it once we get you over to the table.” You take a deep breath, then place your water-covered hands on her shoulders. “I’m gonna start down and work my way up so that the bigger muscles help the smaller ones release. You’re probably going to feel really warm from all the blood flow moving through the tissues again. If you need me to stop, tell me.”
Lin takes a deep breath to brace herself, then nods. “Just do what you need to do.”
You nod back --out of habit, her eyes are still closed--and start using the water to massage the muscles how you’ve been trained. You knead her shoulders with your waterbending, using the water in her muscle tissue to massage out the adhesions. “Come on,” you mutter as you work at a particularly stubborn knot. “I know you’re not happy; please let go for me…” You smile when you feel the muscle --finally--relax. “Thank you.”
From there, it’s like chasing after an unraveling rope. The release in the shoulder muscles triggers relaxation in Lin’s neck and face; all you have to do is follow along and catch any stragglers.
Lin lets out a gasp, then relaxes against the couch.
“That’s it,” you murmur with a smile as her body goes limp. You focus on the crown of her head, make sure the headache finishes dissipating properly, then bend the remaining water back into your jug once you’re done. “How’s that?”
Lin opens her eyes and blinks. “Feels like I got a full night’s sleep for once.” She pauses, then grimaces. “And like I’ve been out in the sun.”
You laugh quietly and nod. “That’s the blood saturating your muscles and soft tissue. It’ll settle in a bit --slowly!” you hiss, placing your hand against her back to help her sit up. “Don’t fucking undo all my hard work.”
“I’m so sorry,” Lin says, smirking. She lets you help her stand --though she glares at you a little for it--then winces as she straightens.
“Yeah, I figured there’d be more,” you mumble as you look her up and down. “Sit on the center of the table, arms down. Do you mind if I turn on another light so I can see better?”
“That’s fine.”
You turn on another lamp, then skirt around the table so you can better examine the set of Lin’s shoulders and her back. You press your fingers down the length of her spine, checking for resistance. “It’s your left hip that bothers you, right?”
“Yes.”
“That tracks with what I’m seeing,” you mutter as you check her ribs. “Can you turn your head to the left for me? And to the right?” You place your hands on her neck so you can feel the motion of the joints and muscles, then tap the left side of her neck. “You’ve got a lot of resistance here, likely caused by your body trying to correct your favoring your right side. I’m going to do some massage work first; the bones move easier if the muscles are already relaxed.” You step back and dig through the bag you’d brought with you. “Are you sensitive to scents?”
Lin grunts, displeased. “No fucking lavendar.”
You chuckle, then opt for the unscented massage oil, just to be safe. “Shirt and bra off, please, then lay flat on your stomach.”
Even though it’s nothing you haven’t seen before, the sight of Lin Beifong topless is always enough to leave you breathless. The musculature in her back, shoulders, chest, abdomen, arms, even her hands, to say nothing of her tits…
You force yourself to close your mouth before you start drooling.
Lin lies down on her stomach, lets you reposition her arms and adjust the angle of her neck…
You sigh when you realize her hands have curled into fists. “Lin.”
“What?”
“I need you to relax.”
“I am.”
You arch one eyebrow at the back of her head. “For a cop, you’re not a very good liar.”
“Not supposed to be. That’s the attorneys’ job.”
You snort, then shake your head with a sigh. “Lin. Please. It’ll be harder for me if you don’t relax.”
She sighs --and then slowly, reluctantly, she lets her body go limp against the massage table.
You murmur your thanks --and tuck away the interesting fact that she conceded to make things easier for you--then pour some massage oil onto your hand and rub it between your palms. Once your hands are warm, you place them on Lin’s upper back and start working.
There’s a lot to work on. Between Lin’s sheer muscle mass and the stress-slash-physical wear and tear of her job, there’s knots and adhesions all over her back.
Lin grunts when something near her left scapula goes crunch. “What was that?”
“Gristle,” you reply with a smile. When she scoffs, you laugh. “I’m serious. The muscles around the shoulder blades get used a lot. The knots that form give the muscle tissue about the same consistency as gristle.” You dig your thumb into another line of knotted muscle and press it through. “Crunch, crunch, crunch. Do you do any yoga or regular stretching?”
“I do some stretching as part of my workout routine.”
“Good, good. I’d recommend adding some upper body stretches to your regimen; it’d help with all the tension you carry up here.”
Lin snorts, low and soft. “Whatever you say, kid.”
***
It’s slow work. There’s a lot of trauma and scarring on and in Lin’s body --no surprise there, given her line of work.
You switch back to waterbending-based healing when you get to her left hip. You grimace when you feel how inflamed the joint is, then start working on calming the irritated and overworked tendons. “You need to take it easier on the job.”
“I need to do my job properly,” Lin fires back, sucking in a breath when you adjust her hip further.
You switch to pain relief techniques. “You won’t be doing your job at all if you destroy the joint.”
Lin grumbles under her breath, but doesn’t argue further.
Once you’re done with the massage work, you let her get dressed before having her lie down on her back. “Have you had a chiropractic adjustment before?”
“Yes.”
“Alright, good. I’m going to work on your back first.” You put a padded board underneath her back, then have her cross her arms over her chest --one atop the other, hands on her shoulders so her arms make a ‘V’ shape. “Alright, curl your chin up.” You put one arm around her, supporting her back, then help her up so you can put your fist between Lin’s back and the board. “Okay, deep breath in… and let it out.”
Lin grunts when you roll her down over your hand and something in her back pops. “Shit.”
You freeze. “Are you okay?”
“Fine. Keep going.”
You keep working up her back, then take the board out from under her back once you’re done. “How does that feel?”
Lin shifts experimentally. “Better.”
“Good, good.” You move to stand at the head of the massage table and start palpating her shoulders and neck. “Alright, let me take the weight of your head in my hands.” You gently turn her head to the left, feeling for any resistance. “Just let your body relax… okay…” You get her neck in position, feeling out where the tension rests. “Tilt your chin up for me, please.” You adjust your grip on her head. “Alright, deep breath in, then out…” You wait for her to exhale, then jerk her head to the left.
Lin groans when her neck cracks. “That felt good.”
“I bet.” You repeat the process for the right side, then have Lin roll on her sides so you can adjust her lower back. “Lay back down, I want to check your knees and ankles.”
Lin arches one eyebrow at you. “Is that… normal?”
“They can be safely adjusted, if that’s what you mean.” You flash her a teasing grin as you walk down the side of the massage table. “Besides, call it a hunch.”
“What ‘hunch?’”
By way of response, you start feeling around her knees and ankles. You nod, then laugh. “Yep. Definitely an earthbender.”
Lin smirks up at the ceiling. “Your first hint was?”
“You lot are rough on your ankles and knees. All that stomping around. I can tell just by how jammed up everything is in here.” You adjust her knees, then move to her ankles --and frown. “What the hell kind of shoes are you wearing, day to day?”
“My uniform boots.”
You squint at her from the base of the massage table. “The metal ones? With the retractable soles so you can use your seismic sense when needed?”
“...Yes.” Lin lifts her head, then chuckles when she sees the stink eye you’re giving her. “They’re practical.”
“They have no support for your joints,” you fire back. You smack her shin --albeit not harshly--when she lets out a huff of laughter, then set about adjusting her ankles. “Stubborn old fart.”
Lin snorts. “Pigheaded kid.”
You smile and shake your head.
***
By the time you finish, it’s nearly ten. The sky is dark, save for the few visible stars --thanks, light pollution--and the sounds of the city have wound down to a gentle roar.
Lin stands, stretches, then lets out a sigh of relief when there’s no pain or resistance. “Thanks.”
You wave your hand as you go about packing up your supplies. “No problem. I wasn’t about to let you suffer.”
Lin nods after a moment, then pads over to a nearby desk. “How much do you charge for your services?”
You gape. “I-- Lin, no--”
“I can always pick a number at random.”
Your mouth snaps shut. You sigh, but acquiesce (mostly because you’re certain she’ll pick an absurdly high amount just to get a rise out of you). You rattle off a price --an expensive price, maybe worth two or three day’s work in total--then accept the check Lin hands you moments later. “Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it.”
You huff a little --it still feels weird, taking a friend-but-not-friend’s money--as you tuck the check in your bag --and then your stomach decides to imitate a dying whale.
“I’m guessing you didn’t have dinner,” Lin surmises.
You shrug. “Kind of hard to give a massage and eat at the same time.”
The corner of Lin’s mouth quirks up. She nods to a nearby phone. “Kang’s is still open, if you want to put in an order.”
“...Okay.”
This entire night is a break in your usual routine. Massage and chiropractic work aside, normally you’re either headed home or in the middle of being fucked into the nearest solid surface by now. There’s no casual hanging out --and, sure, Lin’s ordered take out for the two of you on occasion, when you were both hungry, but all this still feels… different.
(You’re not sure what’s scarier, the change or the fact that part of you likes it.)
You put in the order --fortunately, Lin’s ordered from Kang’s before, so you know what she likes--then put down the phone just as the clock strikes ten. “Oh! Murder Mystery Theater is on!”
Lin looks over at you. “What?”
“It’s a crime-drama radio show. They run a new show every week.” You gesture to the radio. “Do you mind?” You take Lin’s hand wave as the permission it is, and turn on the radio before tuning it to the right station.
The sound of slightly muffled string instruments floats out the speaker.
“This week! On Murder Mystery Theater…”
You make yourself comfortable in an armchair that matches the velvet upholstered sofa. The new shows air at nine, so this one’s a rerun, but you recognize it as one of your favorites --a dramatic game of cat and mouse between the intrepid detectives and a serial killer hiding in plain sight.
Five minutes in, and you realize that Lin’s listening along, even as she reads from a newspaper. You catch her looking over at the radio or staring off into space while she processes the story unfolding before her.
Eventually, she flips to the next page of the paper and says, “The doctor did it. He gets off on killing his patients.”
You raise your eyebrows as you look over at her. You already know she’s wrong --it’s the mortician’s assistant, who so happens to be the doctor’s son. A smile stretches across your lips as an idea forms in your brain. “Wanna bet?”
Lin looks up from the paper and smirks at you. “What’s your wager?”
You mull it over, then grin wickedly. “If you’re wrong, I get to use the cuffs on you at some point.”
Lin scoffs and sets the paper down on the coffee table in front of the sofa with a thwap. “And what could you possibly offer to make that a balanced wager?”
“If you’re right… I’ll behave for a night. Whatever you want, no complaining, no fighting.”
Lin’s eyes light up. She smirks, then extends a hand out to you.
You grin and shake her hand.
***
Dinner arrives halfway through the show. You and Lin eat in the sitting room, listening to the show while eating (spicy possum chicken with steamed vegetables and rice for her, braised hippo beef with spring rolls for you).
“--but Jang said she was with her husband at an evening show until eleven.”
“...Which means he can’t have been playing cards with his friends at ten.”
“Not unless he’s a Spirit. Come on, I’ll drive. Let’s go see if Lee remembers this ‘show’ he went to with the missus.”
“This isn’t half bad,” Lin comments around half a mouthful of possum chicken.
“I thought you liked Kang’s,” you fire back, even though you caught her meaning the first time.
She rolls her eyes, swallows, then continues. “I meant the show. Its description of police procedure is actually on point.”
“The creator shadowed police departments in the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation for over a year before writing the first episode,” you explain before biting into a spring roll. You chew, swallow, then add, “He used to work as a PR rep for law enforcement when they had to work difficult cases.”
Lin nods, impressed. “It’s definitely better than all the crime family and love triangle shit that gets put out there.”
“Well… that stuff happens, doesn’t it?”
“Not the way the media likes to write it.”
You concede with a shrug --then perk up when you realize the script is heading towards the twist reveal. You shove the rest of your spring roll into your mouth to keep from tipping off Lin to your “insider information.”
“Lee Jang is a servant to this city. He’s been my coworker for three years! I think I’d know if he was a psychopath murderer.”
Lin’s brows knit together. She sets down her container of chicken and glares at the radio. “The mortician’s assistant?”
You shrug and take another bite of your entree to keep from grinning like an idiot. “Eh, there’s still time for things to shake out different. Each show always has a twist.”
Except it doesn’t “shake out different.” The mortician’s assistant is arrested, theres a few brief trial scenes, and then it ends with an allocution when it’s apparent that the case isn’t going in the defendant’s favor.
Lin tosses her chopsticks against the coffee table and slumps back against the couch with a disgusted scowl. “Fucking dammit.”
“I guess that makes me the winner.” You tidy up your take out trash, pretending to pay Lin no mind as she glares holes into the side of your skull.
There’s no hiding your smug sense of victory --especially from a seasoned detective such as Lin Beifong.
She narrows her eyes. “You knew how the story would end.”
You lift your gaze to meet hers and smile, smug and unrepentant. “New shows air at nine. Reruns air at ten.”
Lin rolls her eyes. “So you cheated.”
“The odds are always in the house’s favor.” Your smile slips when you take in her obvious discomfort and displeasure. “We don’t have to hold the deal if you’re that upset about it.”
Her gaze cuts over to you. She studies you for a minute, then relaxes minutely and shakes her head. “It’s fine. A deal’s a deal.”
You’d argue, but something in her eyes --a familiar glint you’re accustomed to seeing before starts undressing you, or spanking you, or bending you over the nearest flat surface--makes you stop. Your cunt throbs, and you push through it by crossing your legs. “Alright, then. I’ll let you know when I want to collect.”
Lin rolls her eyes --but she’s smiling, just a hint. “Brat.”
“Funny, I thought that was why you liked me.”
Lin merely rolls her eyes again (but you swear you see her smile get bigger, just a bit).
You stand, stretch, then turn off the radio when it switches to a commercial. You eye the clock, then groan when you realize it’s almost eleven. “Dammit. I didn’t realize it was so late.”
It’s too late for a cab --again--or the hotel’s car service. Lin could drive you, but it’d be forever to get to your apartment building from here (thank you Spirit Vines and bureaucracy for impeding the city infrastructure).
Lin glances at the clock, then stands and starts clearing her share of the take out trash. “Stay here. Use the second bedroom.”
You nod, grateful (it’s not the first time you’ve stayed over with her at the hotel, given that the Spirit Vine roadblocks aren’t exactly new). “Thanks.”
Lin nods--
And then the two of you just stare at each other.
(Because, while this isn’t the first time you spent the night in her hotel suite, normally she fucks you in your bed, then heads to her own bedroom once you’re sated and on the verge of passing out.
But, if it wasn’t clear, this isn’t exactly “normal procedure.”)
Lin moves first. She nods again --awkward and jerky--then carries her trash over the bin in the kitchen before striding off to the room she usually uses. “I’m going to bed. Good night.”
“Good night,” you reply, soft enough that you’re not sure she hears you. You blink when the door to her bedroom thumps shut, then sigh and force yourself to clean up and head for bed as well.
(Despite the luxurious mattress and bedding, sleep is a long time coming.)

A Test of Love
(Kyalin)
"I don't understand why I have to wear this?" Lin asked for the zillionth time. Kya sighed, apply the last sticker and admiring her handiwork.
"Its just a standard heart test, Lin, to make sure you're not at any risk of a stroke."
"I'm not." Kya raised an eyebrow and the metalbender looked down at her chest and abdomen. Her torso was covered with 'electromagnets' as Kya had put it. They were monitoring her heart rate and whatever else.
"Lin, you're fifty now, this is how it is." Kya affirmed. She reached out to pull Lin's shirt back down, thankful she was able to maintain her blush when she had been so close to the earthbender.
"Can't you just... bend water or something to make me better?"
"Oh Lin, modern technology is a wonderful thing. Asami and Sato industries is making medical care much more available even to poorer regions of the earth Nation." Lin rolled her eyes and Kya reached out a hand, pulling the metal bender up. The machine attached to her wait beeped and Kya blinked.
"See, it's working already." She grabbed a notebook and wrote down the time, ignore Lin's glare.
"What are you doing?" The chief asked, leaning over Kya's shoulder.
"Keeping track of everytime it beeps, so we can track the pattern to see if it's regular."
"Let me have that." Lin said, taking the book. Kya shrugged giving her a pen as well.
"Suit yourself, but no slacking, and try to make predictions about what causes it to beep if you can." Lin snorted and Kya chuckled, picking up her nurse bag.
"Hey, where you going?" Lin asked scratching at her stomach already.
"Home, I've been here all night, Lin."
"Oh. I'll see you later then?" Kys smiled, nodding.
"Sure. Come by the island." The machine beeped again and Kya bit her lip as Lin took out the book, scribbling something down.
"See you then." The metalbender said.
Later had arrived and Lin stepped off the ferry. She wasn't able to wear armor over top this machine so she resorted to a sport tank with a sweater just in case it got chilly. Her RCPD sweats worked just fine, Kya seemed to like them anyway.
Stop. Whatever you're doing Beifong, it's not a good idea.
It took Lin an entire two minutes to figure out why her heart rate increased. It went off twice, both of which were in the jurisdiction of the waterbender. In hindsight, she should've stayed home and spared herself the embarrassment of getting caught. But then she wouldn't be able to see Kya, even if just from afar.
"Beifong!" Kya smiled, coming up to her.
You can do it you can do it you can-
The machine beeped and Lin sighed, silencing it and hoping Kya didn't notice.
"Meeting me at the dock?" Lin asked.
"Well of course, it was either me or meelo."
"Right, thanks then." Kya smirked as they walked back to the temple.
"Still uncomfortable?" Kya asked.
"Little bit, it just feels weird under my clothes that's all."
"Well, you can take it off soon enough."
"Tomorrow morning, right?"
"Right." Kya looked at Lin thoughtfully  as if she were suprised Lin remembered.
"Hey Lin! Come on in!" Pema called when the two entered the temple. Korra was crashed on the couch, apparently the city was busy last night, and with Lin out for the day Korra had picked up the slack. Lin looked down at the slumbering avatar, smiling.
"Reminds me of when I showed up at you're apartment that one time, you were out cold to the world." Lin looked to Kya, a questioning look on her face.
"What? When did that happen?"
"Like ten years ago."
"Where was I?"
"I told you, out cold."
"Oh, why?"
"Beats me. I moved you to the bed and stayed the night. Got a call from Pema to come back that night, she needed help with Jinora." Lin couldn't remember, despite how hard she tried.
"Thanks, I guess." She said.
"No problem, Chief." Kya replied, smiling. Her shoulder brushed against Lin's and Lin blushed
And here we go again-.
As she expected the beeping started again. Kya looked over her shoulder at Lin. She had a look on her face, narrow eyes, a raised eyebrow. She was forcing herself not to smile by the way she bit her lips together.
You did this to yourself, Chief .
Pema had once again outdone herself with dinner, the table was covered inch by inch with appetizers, main courses and desserts by the time they were done. Lin thought it challenged the table her sister would prepare for her visits to Zaofu.
"Thank you for dinner, Pema" Lin spoke, "it was amazing, truly." Pema looked to Tenzin who shared a confused look.
"What?" Lin asked, frustrated with their secrecy.
"Nothing, it's just... your awfully bubbly tonight, Lin." Tenzin explained.
"I'm too bubbly? First I'm too much of a stuck up so I relax a bit and now-"
"Lin that's not what I-" he was cut off by the beeping. Lin growled, slamming a fist down and halting it with her other hand.
"Lets go upstairs, hmm?" Kya asked, "I want to check the battery and make sure it's charged for the night." Lin huffed  getting up an following the waterbender.
"You don't need to be so crash, Lin. They're just worried for you."
"They don't need to be."
"I know that, but they need convincing. You've been through a lot these past five years, do this test and reassure them." Lin nodded, sliding into the door before closing it behind her.
"This you're room?" Lin asked with a grin.
"Yeah."
"Looks the same as when we were kids."
"Did you have a crush on me then too?" Kys asked and Lin paused. She felt the blush coming, and with it the sound of the machine.
"Is it that obvious?"
"Lin, please. It's alright, I'd be lying if I said I haven't thought about it." Lin widened her eyes.
"What do you mean by... 'it?" Lin asked nervously. It beeped again and her instict silenced it.
"Lin.. I mean. Come on." Kya replied. She stuttered a bit, which Kya never did  she was very well spoken. Lin took a seat on the bed, taking the machine from her belt. Kya sat beside her, taking it and flipping it over.
"Can you pop the lid off?" Kya asked her. Lin used her bending to pull it off and inspect the battery.
"It should last, might cut an hour short, but that won't fudge the results." Kya explained. Lin nodded, moving a leg closer to Kya's.
Well this is it.
She caught Kya's gaze with her own. The waterbender placed a hand on Lin's thigh, the other one gripping under her chin as she pulled Lin's face to hers. Their lips met in a slow, soft embrace. Kya pulled away slowly, taking Lin's bottom lip with her before finally letting go. She pressed her forhead to Lin's and smiled.
"I like spending time with you, Lin." Kya whispered.
"Me too." Kya kissed her again with a little more power this time. Lin was taken aback by her strength but accepted it.
Beeeeeeeepppppp!
Kya pulled away and Lin sighed.
Stupid machine.
"Sorry." Lin said, shutting it off.
"Dont be, let's me know I'm doing something right." Lin leaned in for another kiss but was met with a finger to her lips.
"We better wait," Kya whispered, "wouldn't want to fudge the results." Lin shook her head as the waterbender got up, pulling a graceful hand form Lin's thigh slowly. As Kys disappeared behind another door, Lin was left with two thoughts. One, she wanted to do that again, and again, and again. Two, she couldn't wait to get this machine off.
Beeeeeepppppp!

just a scratch
summary: You were always the hero, always the one protecting those around you. So who could be surprised by your honorable death?
a/n: I woke up this morning literally thinking "why not write a death fic," so here you guys go. Here's your Lin fic. I came up with this idea like two days into having this blog and it’s inspired by this art.
word count: 3k
Tumblr media
When you were little your favorite books were those of heroes. Of great adventures and love so profound it would be talked about for centuries to come. The ones now collecting dust on the third to last shelf on your bookcase, the mahogany one situated between your desk and cedar bookcase, is where you place your favorites.
A recurring theme in them all is self-sacrifice. Loving someone sometimes requires that and you knew if the time ever came, you'd do it all for her. A life without her is not one you could live through, a world without her is dark and full of monsters and crime. Not only would you do it for your own selfish reasons but because she was so important to other people as well. The death of Lin Beifong is the day the heart of Republic City stops beating.
If you had to choose a way to go, it would be protecting those you love. And if Lin's life was on the line, then you knew it had to be you.
There are a million scares that have happened in the last few years, ever since Korra arrived the number of times you were jumping in front of her was too many to count. After the fourth, after you pushed her aside so Amon would take your bending, she'd all but screamed at you for hours while holding you, scared to let you go. Despite the emptiness seeming to fill you up like a ship sinking, it was worth it.
After you got it back Lin didn't let you out of her sight for weeks, suddenly you were trailing after her like a lost puppy. You understand her need to have you nearby and you didn't mind, who could mind the company of Lin?
One night sometime after the eighth time, Lin notices those books on the third to last shelf. She's read one or two and casually asks you how the others end. In your hands is a new one just as heartbreaking and morbid as the others. You don't realize the dots connecting for her whilst you happily ramble on about them, mentioning how you read your first one in the library at the age of seven.
“I mean it's what you do for love and it's so-”
“No you stay alive for love so you can live out the rest of your life with them,” her voice is firm as she grips one of those favorites of yours. You frown, slowly closing the one you're currently reading.
“Well it's not like you'd just do it for anything, it's to protect the one you love.”
Over the next few years, Lin's heart almost stops a million times as you keep protecting her. She tries to get you to stay in Republic City when she goes off to protect Korra but your stubbornness somehow beats Lin's.
That break-in at Zaofu solidifies it for you. Lin slips off with Suyin, so they can propel from the ceiling to save Korra. She makes sure you're distracted before sneakily racing off. When you turn around to check on Lin she's gone. She's gone and as you whip your head around to look for her there isn't a trace of where she went.
You know you're being selfish, that you should push this panic and fear down to help save Korra but you can't. You need to know where she is, people are yelling at you as you continuously turn, hoping to spot her. You don't notice how the combustion bender has turned to you. Your vision is blurring, you need to find her, and little do you know she's watching from above with her heart in her throat as P'li smirks before taking aim.
The sound her bending makes has you whipping around. Your eyes widen at the bolt of fire shooting towards you, frozen in place. This is not how you want to go down, you’ve had an unhealthy obsession with how you’d leave this world from a young age and this was not it. In the last second before your life ends two arms wrap around your waist as a body slams into you. You fall to the floor with a loud thud and a pained moan as your head smacks against the concrete. The bolt of fire whizzes past the two of you as it burns through a bush.
The woman above you isn’t Lin. It’s some guard with black hair and a mole under her eye and you can only half make out what she's saying, partially due to the concussion you now suffer from but also from the icy fear that has encased you. Little do either of you know that by Kuvira saving you, your fate has been placed in her hands for another day.
She’s asking if you're okay, by now Lin has saved Korra and the intruders have vanished. She knows your importance to the Beifong family. Kuvira helps pull you up into a sitting position, she watches you wince from the pain, your eyes squeezed shut. There’s a small spot of blood on the ground, and so she checks behind your head and finds a small cut.
Lin has given Korra to Suyin, bolting to where she sees you hunched over while Kuvira cleans the cut for you. You don’t hear or notice her coming, the only indication is when her arms slip around you as she pulls you against her body so tight it feels like the air is being squeezed out of you.
“What the fuck was that?” She chokes out between sobs. You slowly wrap your arms around your lover as you suddenly begin to feel tired.
“I couldn’t find you.”
Tumblr media
After Zaheer when your life quiets down just a smidgen, Lin proposes. She found the ring at a jewelry store in Zaofu the day after you almost died and knew. You become a blubbering mess, it’s entirely unattractive as there’s snot mixing with tears but you rapidly nod as you choke out “yes.”
A year later you get married and the day is nothing short of a fairy tale. Everything is perfect as you sway to the song with your wife's arms wrapped around your waist. Everyone watches as you both lovingly stare into each other's eyes. Lin thinks that it’ll be calmer now and you’ll be safe. You're her wife and you love her and you're safe.
You think back on that day often with a fond smile, the cake you smeared across her face and the scowl she sported directly after. How she then cupped your cheeks in her hands, so she could rub the cake off onto you. There are two photo albums worth of photographs from that day and in almost every single one you both stare at each other in this way that feels so intimate. If a stranger took a look they’d be able to tell just how much you loved one another.
Lin’s been given her happily ever after, those two years that follow are blissful. You open up a bookstore near your apartment, and she forces herself to come home at a reasonable time every night, so she can enjoy your company before you head off to bed. You settle into a routine that neither of you mind, all Lin cares about is that you're safe and you're happy.
Some people (like Suyin) say it’s almost sickening how much you two love each other but Lin just thinks that’s because she's jealous of not having this kind of heartwarming, never-ending love. Everyone knows her marriage has dulled into one of convenience, and she’s never almost lost the love of her life as Lin has. It makes you cherish every moment in case it’s your last.
That peace breaks when Kuvira comes to Republic City, her change in demeanor is shocking and her inability to hand over the Earth Kingdom saddens you. She saved your life and the woman in front of you is not the same one who pushed you out of the way all those years ago. Something in her eyes has twisted, she’s become jaded over time and you seem to be the only one who holds out hope. Even Suyin gives up on her.
When Toph meets you she's nothing short of surprised. “Hi, I’m your daughter's wife, Y/n.” In the background, Bolin can see Lin rolling her eyes as she begins to walk away. You guys are on a mission, and she really doesn’t want you to make nice with her mother.
But you do because you're you and when Lin snaps while everyone is quietly eating their flameo noodles you softly calm her down. Still, you look over your shoulder at the first metal bender and say “you may have raised the love of my life but you’ve done nothing for her since the day you left Republic City. If she doesn’t want to forgive you for abandoning her then that’s perfectly fine by me.”
Your words remind Lin of the first time you met, how she was floored by your ability to bite back despite your otherwise quiet demeanor. You’d been this shy woman who bumped into her on your way out of a bookstore and when she went to scold you for not paying attention you stopped her in her tracks with one look alone. It may seem childish and stupid, cringe-worthy even, but she knew she had to marry you one day just with that look.
The next morning you save the Beifongs along with Zhu Li, you can’t help but watch Kuvira twist around as she continues to try and take Suyin down. If you go up there, will she do the same? She probably doesn’t remember you but as your savior, you remember her. Lin pulls you onto Juicy and wraps her arms around you, she thought the action was over, that her fear of losing you would lessen but it’s back in full force.
She tries to make you evacuate with the rest of Republic City and that stubbornness she loves rears its head as you put your foot down, claiming that you go wherever she does.
It’s all a blur really, there’s so much to do and such little time as you all try and try again to take her down when finally a reprieve comes in the form of Hiroshi’s sacrifice. Inside you stick with the Beifong sisters as you all work to destroy the weapon whilst Korra tries to distract Kuvira.
It’s a split second filled with too much to process. One second you succeed and destroy the ammunition and then the arm in which you're all in is being flung across the city. You push Lin and Suyin towards the wall, your wife bends metal around the two of them and tries to do the same for you but it’s flimsy as you're so far away and everything is moving so fast. The force of impact successfully knocks you out.
When you come to there're three things you notice.
Number one: You are so cold and yet you can feel sweat beading down your forehead.
Number Two: The metal wrapped around you is gone, it must have broken off from the impact.
Number three: It feels like you can’t breathe, there’s something inside you and when you try to move a pained scream scraps up your throat, it sounds gurgled and wet as something warm drips from your lips.
When you finally manage to open your eyes you notice that you aren’t in the arm anymore, with your blurry vision you can make out the faint shape of it against a broken building. There’s so much distorted noise around you. You can faintly make out your name being shouted and when you try to speak nothing comes out.
You make a mistake in your painful haze, you try to move. It’s then you finally look down as another scream rips out of you, this one slightly quieter, and notice the steel rod sticking out of the upper half of your stomach. You know it’s stupid but the only thing you can manage to think of is ‘that’s not meant to be there.’
Lifting your arm up you try to find a source of water, maybe you can heal what's around you as you slowly pull yourself off, but your call goes unanswered. Your arm gives out and falls onto the jagged pieces of concrete that cut into your skin but your brain is too focused on the pain in your stomach.
Where is she? Is she okay? Will this pain have been worth it? You don’t know, you're alone and you know what’s about to happen and you're alone. In all the visions you had of saving her, the last thing you saw was her. But now it’s the dilapidated storefront that must have been broken in the collision as you lay where a wall once used to stand. The ceiling is moldy and only half of it is still intact. You don’t even get to see the sun at the end.
Just as you're about to close your eyes to try and think of happy memories to go out on, you faintly hear someone say in a voice full of sorrow and desperation “No… No, no, no!”
This site right here is Lin’s worst nightmares all wrapped into one. There’s so much blood pooling underneath you as it drips down the broken concrete of the building. You're pale, so pale she thinks you almost look like a ghost and blood drips from your mouth.
She surges forward and falls to her knees, the bricks and rocks cut into her pants as pain sears through her legs, but she doesn’t care nor notice. All she notices is how your eyes are closed and how you're shivering in the middle of summer. Two warm hands cup your cheek, bringing you out of your pleasant memory of your wedding day as you open your eyes. A pair of bright green eyes stare down at you, she looks so scared.
“Lin…” You wheeze out. She shakes her head as she begins to sob. You feel so tired, so weak and if you had the energy it’d anger you but you can’t find it in you to care anymore. She’s here and you can see her eyes, her beautiful face and you know that what you’ve just done to protect her and Suyin was worth it. If not for you pushing her out of the way she would have fallen out of the arm and you’d be the to find her amongst the rubble.
“No you're fine, we’re gonna get you a heal- Korra can heal you it’s fi-” she’s stumbling over her words as she tries to wipe the blood off your face, it just smears the red liquid down your cheek and onto your neck. You shake your head.
“I love you…”
“Stop it, don’t say that you’ll be fine. You are going to live.”
“Please say it back…” You know you won’t live, no one will find you in time and you’ve lost too much blood. It’ll happen any second now and you want to hear it one more time.
“I’m not ready for this… You’re meant to grow old with me…” She sobs out. “You’re meant to live.”
“Please Lin…” you stop as you cough up more blood. It’s close. “I’m scared, please jus-”
“I love you, I-” she gently rests her forehead against your own, your skin is like ice now, “love you.” Lin feels so warm and comforting, you want to lean forward to wrap yourself around her but you can’t.
Tragedy struck within a matter of seconds. Life deemed her unworthy of a happy ending.
The shivering that let her know you were still there stops. She’s too scared to open her eyes afraid of what she might find. Maybe if she keeps them closed you’ll come back. You were like a cat with nine lives and surely you had one left. She doesn’t know how long she sits there leaning over your lifeless body with her hands cradling your face and forehead against your own, her back begins to hurt from the position, but she does not move an inch.
Everyone is looking for the two of you. They’ve won, victory is finally theirs and everyone can rest easy now with the great uniter being dragged by Suyin and Korra. Lin left the second the blast had cleared, screw victory all she cared about was you and Suyin was worried by the quietness of the streets, by the fact that neither of you came stumbling out of an alley with your hands all over each other as relief radiates from you.
It’s eerily silent as they turn down that fateful street Suyin and Lin woke up in, and she spots something out of the corner of her eye. A broken storefront that was slightly concealed by a large chunk of concrete. She sees the black of Lin’s suit and hears the faint whisper of someone murmuring something.
Tossing the injured Kuvira towards Korra to fully support her, she races over to her sister. Everyone stops as they see what's transpiring. No one says a thing, breath being held as they make out Lin leaning over something. Even Kuvira watches because what else is there for her to do?
Suyin stops a few feet behind her sister, her shoulders dropping when she sees a sight so tragic, so heartbreaking that even she begins to sob. Lin is too focused on you, she doesn’t even realize that she’s repeating something like a mantra, like some kind of prayer that will go unanswered.
“You're going to be okay.” It’s all Lin can say, eyes still squeezed shut. Hesitantly, Suyin takes a step as she tries to stifle her cries.
“Lin?...”
She stills at her sister's voice, those same four words dying in her throat. Suyin braves another step and then one more before placing her hand on her sister's shoulder. She can see the blood now and there’s so much of it. It reminds her of the rushing river right outside of Zaofu. Lin tenses at the touch.
“She’s fine.” Lin spits out and spirits it is such a useless lie. “She’s going to be fine.” Suyin grips her shoulder and pulls, in that moment of panic at being ripped from you her eyes finally open. You're so limp and without her hands to hold you, your face lulls to the side. Suyin finally spots the cause of your death with the detachment of Lin. Nothing could have saved you from that, not even if they found you immediately. Only spirit water could have fixed that and it’s too far away.
“Lin…” Suyin starts as she continues to pull her away. Fear grips her so tightly she can’t control herself as she whips around to push her away. Her younger sister catches her arms before she can try to bend her away and Lin struggles to break free. Everyone sees you now.
“Get off of me!” She screams, her voice cuts through the air like a knife and neither of the sisters notices the display of grief behind them as every person who knows you understands the gravity of the situation. You were like a second mother to Korra, you made sure Mako was fed and healthy during his brief time staying at the station. When Bolin doubted his bending in Zaofu you cheered him on.
You were everyone's ray of sunshine. No one knows what to do when the sun finally goes out.
“She’s fine!” Suyin just nods as she pulls Lin into a tight hug. The chief wails as she finally begins to realize that you aren’t fine, that you won’t wake up. It settles into her bones and drags her down until she’s collapsing. Suyin struggles to hold her sister as she gently kneels for them.
In her defeated, injured state, Kuvira remembers you. She remembers cleaning up the bit of blood from the back of your head, and she thinks ‘that’s too much for me to clean.’  The great uniter remembers the sob that left Lin when she barreled into you. The sound of her voice as she choked out “What the fuck was that?”
Lin can’t breathe, she feels her heart die with you as she wails into her sisters shoulder. The icy cold grips of grief latch onto her like a parasite and make itself a nest inside her now empty chest cavity.
That day victory is not what anyone on that street feels. The sunshine has vanished from this world and replaced it with darkness that’ll loom over everyone’s life for the rest of time.
That day is the day Lin Beifong truly dies.

A Girls Night Out
Tumblr media
[A kyalin short]
It had been a while since the Chief had a day off from the hectic hustle and bustle of keeping Republic City in check. A sandwich here and there, sometimes a bowl of piping hot noodles from her favourite supper joint after a night of patrols. The occasional dingy bar after a particularly hard week...
But, how long has it been since she dressed up all fancy to visit Kwongs for a meal? Apparently too long, because that meal felt like the best thing she’d ever eaten. She used to come pretty often... When everyone was still together in Republic City. Tenzin always attempted to be all fancy and romantic. And when Avatar Aang was around, he’d always make it a point to set aside a few hours every week to catch up with Lin. She never had a dad, so Aang always tried to make her feel like part of the family. They got along famously. It must be a family thing, because the week Kya returned from the poles, her first move was to book the earliest slot she could get at the place, and insisted that her favourite kid, Lin dressed up all nice for a dinner together.
“Woah, how long has it been since we came here!” Kya reminisced, placing a gentle hand of Lin’s shoulder, and smiled fondly. “Gosh, I don’t even know...” Lin sighed, picking up the glass of champaign that glistened under the restaurant’s dimly lit chandeliers. “I remember coming here quite often with the whole family. Too bad that you don’t visit often these days-“ She swished the glass and took a tentative sip, before continuing under her breath “-since you, ya know, left for the South”
Wide-eyed, Kya pulled her hand back and grimaced “I... I’m sorry, I-“
Wait, why did Lin say that? She’s in her 50s, not some neglected teenager. That, was embarrassing. Snapping out of her trance, Lin raise a hand and waved it “OH, NO NO, hahahah no i didn’t mean it like,, i mean, it’s natural you had to, to take care of Aunt Katara after your dad passed. Uh..”
Kya always had a way with understanding the intricacies of everyone’s emotion and making people feel comfortable enough to talk to her about it. But Chief Beifong the hardass? The woman who didn’t even take a single day off to mourn the death of her father figures, Avatar Aang and Sokka? Who diligently led her team to watch over their funeral proceedings? The woman who continued to speed up the ranks, even faster after her partner of a over a decade broke up with her so suddenly after Aang died? The woman who hadn’t even shed a tear after her sister, mother, Bumi, and then Kya and Aunt Katara, all left her? Alone. Yea, how about NO to emotional vulnerability. Yikes
“I mean, I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you when you and Tenzin split.” Kya rubbed her neck and looked away, feeling a nagging guilt that had haunted her for a decade now, aching in her chest. Why didn’t she come back? As if this wasn’t something that she’d missed doing. As if she was afraid of being turned away by the woman she’d painfully seen close herself off to the world, encased within a thick shield of metal, protected from being hurt ever again.
“Ahhhh well, yea. You should've been, I did make quite the scene” A chuckle broke through, as Lin took another sip. “It sounds sad, but I have to say, I am quite proud of the bending prowess i displayed on that island. Scared the hell out of Tenzin.” Lin laid a hand in Kya’s arm and laughed proudly.
Ahh yes. This. Lin hadn’t locked herself up. Well, she tried. But Kya of all people should have known that Lin could never. She was too kind, too loyal, passionate, dedicated, forgiving.... Kya wondered why she ever doubted that about Lin. Wondered how she lived for a decade pretending that she could live without the soft expressions Lin had when she smiled, the hum in her voice, the way her wavy hair fell across her face. This moment, this feeling, it felt, right. A deep sense of calm and love washed over her, a wave of confidence burst through her. She was going to take this leap. And she wanted to do it with Lin.
“I know, let me make it up to you.” Kya’s voice deepened, as she shifted her arm to The back of Lin’s seat, pulling it closer, so she could reach around Lin’s waist. “Let me get this one.” She looked into Lin’s eyes, while pulling out the check and calling the waiter over.
In a whisper, Lin leaned over and placed her elbow on the table, resting her face on her hand, “If i get to guilt trip you into paying for every meal, i’m going to start asking you out more often..”. The alcohol must be starting to work its way through Lin’s body, because how else would she be able to explain the heat she felt spread across her body, and rising to her face. The way the light hit Kya’s face, the way her long silver hair shined, how Kya’s hand grazed her ever so softly. Everything about Kya seemed to call out to Lin. That’s new.
“It’s a date, then!” Kya winked before passing the bill to the waiter. Lin’s gaze dropped, and she could help but smile. This feeling of fullness, she way her heart skipped, how long has she yearned for this missing feeling. She could get use to this.
Lin’s eyes travelled up the slit of Kya’s blue gown and back up to meet Kya’s eyes. “So, where should we head to now?”

Find out for yourselves! Set after Ruins of the Empire.
Kuvira X Reader - The Christmas Conundrum Part I
It was the most wonderful time of the year. You watched the citizens of Zaofu go about their day preparing for Christmas. Decorations lined every street corner and shops, garland decorated every lamp post, and colorful lights glimmered in every snow-covered pine tree. You clung to your coat tightly, feeling a cold breeze blow past you as snow drifted down from the sky coating the land in a serene winter ambiance.  Yes, it was the most wonderful time of the year, but not for everyone…especially not for Kuvira.
Since the reunification process and the downfall of the earth empire, things have not been easy for the former great uniter. From the time the two of you were put on house arrest under the care of Suyin Beifong, the transition from total freedom to full restriction has been a very troubling and taxing situation for the both of you. The relationship between Kuvira and Suyin was very rocky but both seem to have come to some sort of common ground. Though Suyin and Kuvira had gotten better and the two seemed to have learned to be cordial around each other didn’t mean that the two were fully amended. The relationship was far from what one would call normal. Suyin and Kuvria would still interact in a way that was very awkward or tense. Almost as if they were both walking on a very cold and thin layer of ice. Regardless, you remained by her side since the very beginning and nothing has changed since the day you joined her cause. You loved her, and no matter what the two of you have been through over the years, nothing has changed.
It was the first time in three years Kuvira had been back with the Beifongs for Christmas. Suyin, a person who was always known for her grand gestures decided to host a celebration for the upcoming holidays. Suyin had taken it upon herself to send out invitations to almost anyone who was a close friend of the matriarch including her half-sister Lin Beifong. You expected Avatar Korra and her girlfriend, the Future Industry CEO Asami Sato to make an appearance as well. This celebration would certainly be very interesting, you thought to yourself growing increasingly worried about what tonight’s events would have in store for you.
You were both welcomed back to the Beifong household and given personal invites from Suyin herself for tonight’s event. You were grateful for the invite knowing full well that Suyin was doing her best to offer an olive branch but you couldn’t help but wonder what her intentions were. As the hours grew close you felt the dread building up inside you that grew stronger as time passed. You knew you were both in for an awkward situation and wouldn’t be surprised if tonight’s events would be emotionally draining on both you and Kuvira. You began to mentally steel yourself for tonight’s events, hoping and praying that everything went smoothly.
When you returned to the Beifong estate you immediately noticed the change in the atmosphere from its usual peaceful operations to the frantic movements and panic as both guards and servants shuffled past you in a hurry. You assumed the Beifong household servants and guards were bustling about getting ready for the party. You walked past the entrance hall, heading towards the parlor.  You paused as an orderly carrying a large box nearly knocked into you. Quickly, you stepped aside to allow them room to slip past you. After the orderly mumbled an apology before rushing away you proceeded to enter the parlor. At the center of the chaos stood the matriarch of the clan herself Suyin Beifong.
Suyin stood at the foot of a tall pine tree with her back to you as she mulled over the tree’s decorations. You approached the matriarch carefully, watching as Suyin used her metal bending to put up last-minute decorations on the tree.
You stood quietly behind Suyin watching her use her bending to take out a large metal star from a colorful box. Suyin held it in the air and turned her attention back to the tree, looking it over carefully. You eyed the star, astonished by its beauty. The design was simple yet elegant. With unique carvings that covered the entire surface of the star and jewels that lined the outer edge. At the very center of it was a star-shaped ruby. It seemed to glisten from the Christmas lights that were wrapped around the branches of the tree. Suyin hoisted it up higher in the air, playing with the weight of it as she maneuvered it up to the top. Very gently and with much concentration she settled it at the very top of the tree, carefully setting it down and making sure the branches would hold its weight. Once she was convinced that the decorative piece was secure Suyin released it from her hold, letting her arm fall to her waist.  It was quite a sight to see, just admiring the beauty of the tree put you more in the Christmas spirit that was almost nonexistent up until now.
You took a step forward to get a better look at the decorations. The gold garland that wrapped around the tree made the Scarlet and gold ornaments appear vibrant. Silver metal candy canes and pine cones also hung from its branches. The metal was smooth and reflective causing the ornaments to sparkle from the nearby Christmas lights. It was breathtaking, there were no other words to describe it.
“It’s so beautiful…” You said out loud, not hearing yourself speak. You watched as the matriarch flinched from your words, turning quickly on her heels to meet your gaze that was still fixated on the tree. It seemed the older woman was not aware of your presence despite her seismic abilities.
“Oh, Y/N!” Suyin said, pressing a hand to her chest to ease her already fried nerves. “I didn’t hear you come in.”
You turned to address the matriarch, noticing how she looked a little worn and weary. You assumed the stress was caused by the intense preparation of tonight's events and believed it was beginning to eat away at her. That was Suyin. If it wasn’t up to her standards then it just wasn’t worth it. You had to give the older woman props, the amount of time, effort, and dedication she put towards her projects were quite impressive. Accepting only the very best and nothing less than that. It’s no wonder Kuvira was so dedicated and hardworking. Suyin must have pushed her hard as her protégé. It made you wonder what life was really like for Kuvira growing up. Up to this point, you only heard the few scant stories that Kuvira had shared with you.
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to startle you.” You quickly cut in after realizing you were staring. “I was just watching you put up the decorations and I have to say the tree looks marvelous!”
At this Suyin breathed a deep sigh. Detecting an undertone of worry, you couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at the older woman. “Is everything ok?”
“With me yes, everything is fine but I can’t help but worry about…” Suyin trailed off, causing you to stare at her with brows knitted in concern.
“Worry about...what?” You pressed, genuinely curious.
“Well... worried about getting everything prepared for tonight before my guests arrive. there are still some things I need to address such as the menu and the entertainment. Lin should have been here already, but her travels were delayed from the approaching snowstorm. So she said she will be here in a few hours.” Suyin sighed at the unfortunate news. She hoped that the storm wasn't too serious but knew Lin could take care of herself. In an attempt to take her mind off her stress she diverted the topic. “I hope you and Kuvira will be there.”
You turned to meet the Matriarch eye’s, the exhaustion evident on her features, but you could see the concern she withheld. “I plan on being there, however, I can't say the same for Kuvira…”
Suyin frowned, turning her attention to the tree, her shoulders sagged at your statement, as if your statement confirmed her fears. “I really want Kuvira to be there, it would mean the world to me. But…” Su grew quiet, her sight fixated on the tree.
Despite her appearance, you could see that Suyin’s mind was somewhere else. “Su…?” You said, trying to revert her attention back to the conversation.
Suyin cast her eyes to the ground. You noticed her hesitation to speak. For someone like Suyin, the behavior was rather odd. She was always quick to speak her mind, not caring what people thought about her. It was an admirable trait but also a flaw of hers.
“I am trying Y/N…” Suyin finally spoke after a few moments of silence.
Instinctively you took a step closer to her, careful to keep enough distance so you didn't feel like you were trying to invade her space. It was more out of care and concern than invasive.
“What do you mean?” you asked gently.
Suyin turned to meet your gaze, you could see the confliction flittered across her face as she spoke. “I know Kuvira has never been one for family gatherings. I mean how could she? Just look at what her parents had instilled in her at such a young age… and I’m afraid… I’ve only added to it.” Suyin turned away from you, it seemed that she was too ashamed to even look you in the eyes. “It’s no wonder she doesn't completely hate me… I wouldn’t be surprised if she did...”
You noticed Suyin’s expression hardened, the idea that Kuvira had possible feelings of underlying hatred towards her was eating away at her. Though Suyin was well versed at keeping her emotions in check, the suppressed hurt you saw behind those emerald green eyes betrayed what the older woman was truly feeling and trying to keep hidden.
“Oh, Su… She doesn’t hate you.  How could she? You were the only mother she has ever known.” You said in hopes to help quell her fears. “I know things haven't been easy for the two of you since we were placed under your care to serve our sentences, but hate is not something I think she feels towards you. I just think... these things take time.”
“How could she not!?!” Suyin rounded on you. The action was so abrupt it caused you to take a step back, afraid that your words of comfort had accidentally upset her.  “I had just as much as a part to play in her actions and for what? If I just listened to her and not brush her off… involved her more with the family - treated her more like a daughter?” Su spoke quickly, trying her best to rationalize Kuvira’s behavior and her direct involvement.
“Honestly I think she is angrier at herself at this point.” You spoke up, feeling that it was necessary. “She blames herself for what happened.” It has nothing to do with you.”
“Then why do I get the feeling that it does?” Suyin asked you, trying to make sense of everything.  Her eyes burned with raw emotion. “It's been months since the two of you were brought under my care and yet she is still distant with everyone, including me. She doesn't talk to me the same way she used to. She hardly eats with us, and when she does she doesn’t even bother talking to anyone. I can barely get her to hold a conversation with me that is not related to the weather or how she is doing... I had hoped that by inviting her it would show that I’m trying to reach out to her- that I’m trying to bring her into my family. I just… I don’t know what else to do.” Suyin seemed legitimately distressed as she spoke.
You stepped forward, placing your hand on Suyin’s shoulder, squeezing gently. “It’s not you Su.” You said softly, trying to reassure her that she was not the problem. “Kuvira is at the point where the guilt is just weighing heavy on her.” You paused, taking a moment to ponder how much information you wanted to share without getting too deep into details. You knew Kuvira was rather autonomous and preferred to deal with her own issues herself. You wanted to respect that.
“Kuvira is just caught up in her own emotions. I can barely get her to talk to me so believe me it's not one-sided. She’s…” You trailed off debating whether to tell Suyin or not, hoping the information you were about to share wasn’t too much... You knew if Kuvira was here she would object. At the same time as Kuvira’s guardian, you felt that Suyin needed to know. “Su, She’s… she’s been crying in her sleep… she’s been having nightmares.”
“Kuvira’s having nightmares again?” Suyin interrupted, her eyes widening. You could tell that she wanted to press you for information. You were worried you may have swung open the door for her to do just that. Instead, Suyin pursed her lips and knitted her eyebrows, her eyes searching your face for answers.
“Yes, she has.” You reaffirmed, hoping that she didn’t begin to drill you with questions you knew you couldn’t answer. “I really shouldn’t be sharing this with you but as our guardian, I feel that this was something you should be aware of.”
“No, of course. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to pry. I appreciate you telling me, I just… I’m worried about her.” Said Suyin, doing her best to keep her voice leveled from her growing concern. “She’s had night terrors growing up, mostly about her parents. I didn’t think she still had them.”
“Well she gets them every so often but they have been rather frequent as of late. I have noticed that Kuvira tends to get like this around the holidays.”
“Well, Kuvira has never been fond of the holidays. From what I've noticed over the years they seem to get her depressed. Probably stemming from her abandonment.” Suyin took a deep breath to help her relax before addressing you again, “You don't have to worry Y/N. I won’t tell her anything. You have my word.” Suyin said firmly.
At Suyin’s reassurance, you breathe a sigh of relief, grateful that Su was not being intrusive. “I appreciate that, thank you.”
“I appreciate you being honest with me. You and I both know how Kuvira can be about these things. Though I have noticed that she has been looking rather… exhausted lately. I had asked if everything was ok, but she brushed it off as if it wasn’t anything important. I should have known better… Kuvira has a habit of undermining her problems.”
You couldn’t help but chuckle in agreement, knowing Suyin spoke with such accuracy. “Ain’t that the truth. It would take a rope and a sledgehammer to get anything out of that thick skull of hers. I swear she is so stubborn sometimes.” You shook your head, “I wish she wasn’t though. It’s not helping her and I think deep down she knows that.”
“Please!” Suyin scoffed, fixating you with an annoyed look. “I’ve been trying to break through those platinum metal walls that she surrounds herself with for years. You might as well grab a plasma saw and start drilling with me.” A small smile appeared on Suyin’s lips.
You laughed at Suyin’s statement. You knew it was in jest but had to admit the matriarch’s words held much truth. The sounds of footsteps scurrying in caught both of your attention, you turned around to see a guard rushing in. He stopped abruptly and stood at attention waiting for Suyin to address him.
“Is there something wrong?” Suyin asked the guard with a raised eyebrow.
“Madam Beifong, an airship belonging to the Republic City’s chief of police, has been spotted by the watchtower. Do we have permission to allow them to land?” The guard asked rather stiffly.
Suyin’s eyes lit up. “Lin’s here? I thought she would be longer. Yes, I grant permission. I will be there momentarily to meet with her.”
With that being said the guard saluted before turning on his heel and running back out from the direction he came in from.
“I’m sorry Y/N I have to cut this short. I need to speak with Lin. We have much to catch up on and no doubt she will want a full report on the progress the two of you have been making.”
“Oh, I understand. It’s not a problem. Besides, I need to get back to my quarters to grab a few things. I’ll see how Kuvira is faring.” You reassured Suyin.
“Thank you, Y/N. If you can talk her into coming to the party tonight it would mean the world to me. I want to see the both of you there.” Suyin said lifting her hand and placing it over yours where it rested on her shoulder, giving it a gentle reassuring squeeze.
“I will figure out what to will do with Kuvira. I might try to have a private chat with her over tea or something later when this is all over. I’ll have some chamomile tea brewed for her and sent to her quarters, later on, to help settle her nerves. Hopefully, it will help with the sleep problems for the time being until we find the underlying cause.”
“That sounds like a plan.” You smiled in agreement. You turned to walk away to leave Suyin to meet with the chief of police when a hand shot out to seize yours. You stopped, turning around to see Suyin smiling. “Really, Y/N... Thank you. I appreciate it.”
You nodded your head, feeling Suyin squeeze your arm gently in appreciation before she released you, arm falling back to your side. With that you took your leave, walking back to the living quarters that you shared with Kuvira. You wondered what she was up to. Knowing her probably some rigorous dance routine or bending forms.
When you entered your quarters you found Kuvira standing by the window watching the snow drifting slowly to the ground. When you closed the door you noticed her stiffening but as soon as she heard you announce that you were back you could see her visibly relax. You approached her from behind wondering what she was so focused on. She made no attempt to turn around to address you instead her gaze remained locked on the view outside the window. You breathed in a deep sigh, you hated when she got like this. Kuvira had a habit of retreating into her walls. Even worse into her head, blocking out everything and everyone, including you. Though she was physically here with you, you could tell that her mind was millions of miles away. You often wondered what went through that brain of hers. Her thoughts must have been just as complex as her emotions. It’s no wonder she frowned so much. She must be putting in a lot of mental effort to stonewall her emotions.
She was still in her nightclothes, her hair out of its usual style was tousled and unkept from sleep. It draped over her shoulders and stuck out in some areas. A clear indication that she hadn't bothered fixing it when she woke up. From the looks of things, it appeared as if she just got up moments ago. It made you wonder how long Kuvira had decided to sleep in. It wasn't like her to do so. She preferred to be on top of her rigorous daily routines but with her current behavior and her known issues with night terrors, it wasn't entirely out of the ordinary. I made the concern you managed to keep under wraps grow, mentally processing ways to try to help, but Kuvira was a stubborn one. Opting to deal with her own affairs and problems herself and pushing anyone else who tried to get close away with very few exceptions. You being one of those said exceptions.
“Hey…” You whispered, lifting a hand to place on Kuvira’s shoulder in hopes to snap her out of her trance. “Did you just get up?
You felt Kuvira stiffen under your touch but immediately began to relax. She turned to meet your eyes, noticing your face etched with worry. She sighed deeply, “About a half-hour ago.” Kuvira answered quietly, her voice still raspy from sleep.
You took a moment to study her features, her appearance looked dejected. You saw for yourself how worn and exhausted she looked, taking a mental note on how her eyes were developing dark circles. You swore the bags under her eyes were big enough to hold her dance equipment. It wasn't a good thing, to say the least. This was beginning to become a problem, a problem you would eventually need to figure out how to rectify despite Kuvira’s stubborn nature.
“Did you have another nightmare?” You asked gently.
Kuvira didn't answer you, all but gave you a silent nod in confirmation. Your hand rubbed her shoulder, trailing down the length of Kuvira’s arm, taking hold of her hand and lifting it to your lips to place a gentle kiss on her knuckles. “Do you want to talk about it?” you asked in hopes she would be willing to open up.
“No, I don't. There's no point to... It’s not going to fix anything.”
“Kuvira…” You began, trying to get her not to start minimizing her issues. It was a notorious habit, one that obviously wasn’t helping if her appearance had anything to say about her mental state. “I know that is how you might feel about it, but if there is something troubling you then you need to not keep it bottled up. It’s just going to fester until it starts to manifest itself into other problems.”
Kuvira averted her gaze from you, almost as if she was trying to retreat back into her walls but not entirely. She took a deep breath and exhaled, “I know.”
“If you don’t want to talk to me will you at least talk to someone? Have you tried reaching out to Suyin?”
You felt Kuvira tense at the very mention of the matriarch’s name. She pulled her hand free from your grasp and turned to walk to the kitchen, leaving you without an answer. You stood there baffled, not sure of what to do.
No, I’m not gonna let her brush this off easily. You groaned and began to follow after her. You turned the corner and stepped into the kitchen just as Kuvira closed the cupboard, a mug in hand. She went over to the pot of freshly brewed coffee she had just made moments before your arrival and poured herself a cup. You stood beside her, leaning against the wall waiting for her reply. “Well?”
You watched as she reached for the sugar dispenser and cream,  pouring in a generous amount. She grabbed a spoon and began stirring the contents in the mug. She was clearly trying to avoid your questioning gaze.
“No of course not.” Kuvira finally answered before lifting the mug to her lips and taking a sip. She exhaled into the mug, feeling its warmth spread throughout her body, relaxing her.
“Why not?” You asked, reaching into the cupboard for a mug to pour yourself a cup.
“Why would I?” Kuvira answered dryly. “What happens to me is my problem. Besides, it's not like Suyin cares.”
“Kuvira… You know that’s not true. You know that Suyin cares. Why else would she have welcomed you back home?”
Kuvira shrugged, taking a long drink from her coffee. “Beats me… Probably because Korra and Lin guilt-tripped her into taking me back.”
“Kuvira, She cares about you. How do you not see that? The times she’s asked how you are doing, the random things she has asked for your assistance on, inviting you to dinner? You can't sit there and tell me you haven’t noticed?.”
“What of it? Kuvira said sharply, growing more agitated by the second. “That doesn't mean anything…”
“Well if it didn't mean anything to her then why does she keep doing it? For Spirits sakes Kuvria, Suyin has been trying to reach out to you by offering an olive branch and you are choosing not to reach for it.”
“I don't know why? She didn't care before, why start now? Kuvira asked bitterly.
“You know she does. I think deep down you do too! Su just has a strange way of showing it, and though it may have not always been the right way she is still trying.” You pressed further, not allowing Kuvira to dismiss it as a frivolous matter. “She asked me about you today.”
Kuvira’s eyes lit up as she pulled her mug away from her lips, swallowing the coffee that she held in her mouth hard. “She did?” She asked, surprised by your statement.
You took a drink from your own mug enjoying the taste and the much-needed warmth it brought to you before answering her. “Yes, she did. She hopes to see us both at the gathering tonight. Lin just arrived before I got back.” You paused, hesitant to bring it up Suyin, worried about what her reaction would be. “Suyin asked how you were doing… She’s worried about you.”
Kuvira took a sudden interest in her coffee mug. Scratching at the matte polished surface and swirling the contents with the spoon. She was contemplating this you were sure. If her stoic expression was any proof of that then you were certain. At the very minimum, she was receptive to your suggestions.
“I really don't want to go,” Kuvira whispered. she leaned her head back to down the rest of her coffee. She straightened back up, placing the mug on the counter with a hard thump. “She really wants to see you there. I’ll be attending too so you are not alone in this….” you reassured her.
“It’s not just this party Y/N! It’s more than that. I don’t want to want to pretend everything is normal when it’s clearly not. I know the Beifong’s have said they have forgiven me but I really can’t help but question the validity of that especially the way they act around me. I swear it’s almost like they expect me to do something bad…” Kuvira said, growing more irritated. She could feel herself being overcome with old resentment feeling an unspoken underlying hurt that even she herself wasn't aware was there, but she didn't want to acknowledge it. Doing so would further cause unnecessary tension that she knew would worsen her mood.
The sudden abrupt change in Kuvira’s behavior made you raise a brow. You could tell that the concern she felt was a valid one but you could see there was something more to her words. Something she wasn't speaking out loud almost as if she was avoiding something. You didn't press for an answer that you knew she wasn't ready to discuss, but you didn't want to dismiss her concern as something frivolous. You knew that in a way she was right. Since the two of you had been put under Suyin’s care you noticed how people watched you carefully, almost fearfully. Like a barrel of blasting jelly with a very short fuse. It was to be suspected of course the two of you were war criminals by all counts. Who’s to say either one of you would not revert to your old dogmatic tendencies. You couldn't change the opinions of others, after all, you were a big believer that actions spoke louder than words. You expected to be treated as such once it became known that Suyin would be your guardian and would be aiding in your rehabilitation. Now you had to put much work into proving to the citizens of Zaofu that you were not a threat and that alone took time. You took a long drink from your mug, feeling your expression soften as you contemplated the situation.
“I know…” You whispered softly. “And I know it’s even more difficult for you since you grew up and knew a lot of these people personally, especially the Beifong’s. You have to understand that these things take time.”
“I know… I just thought that my efforts in stopping Guan in Gaoling would have been more than enough to prove that I’m not the same person. That I'm not the Great Uniter any more. I regret how in my conquest for power I lost sight and hurt the ones I cared about… I’m trying to change Y/N… Why can't they see that?” Kuvira said anger flitting over her face as she spoke. What caught your attention were her eyes, you could see the pain she felt in that moment threatening to surface but she wouldn't allow it.
You put the mug you held in your hand down and reached out to her, pulling her close to you.  “I'm not the only one who sees it. Suyin sees it too. As much as you don't believe that to be true, it is. Please... give her a chance. I know it's frustrating but you are not alone in this… You have me…” You gave her a small smile, lifting your hand to cup her face.
Kuvira exhaled sharply, feeling herself relax under your touch despite her frustration. She knew you were right, but it didn't make dealing with the reality of the situation any easier to bear. She leaned into your touch and allowed herself a moment of clarity, knowing full well you were subjected to the same treatment as her. It wasn't easier for either one of you and understood that you both needed each other. She needed to be rational about this and not let her personal feelings get in the way of reason.
“I know…” Kuvira said quietly, thankful for your support despite her stubbornness. “Thank you Y/N. Really, I don't know how you put up with me sometimes…”
You chuckled softly, leaning in to press a kiss to her forehead. “The same way you put up with the Beifong’s.” You pulled away from her and pushed her tousled hair from her face.
Kuvira sighed deeply, finally making up her mind. “Alright, I’ll go. But just so we are clear this was your idea.” She jabbed a finger at you accusingly.
You took hold of her finger and shook it. “Glad we could come to an agreement.” You said, resisting the urge to laugh.
Kuvira pulled herself free from your grasp. Her eyes narrowed, a frown forming on her lips. “Don’t patronize me…”
You scoffed. “Me? Patronize the all-mighty Kuvira? I would never…” You smiled.
Kuvira couldn't help the pout that formed on her lips. You found it so cute when she did, loving her softer side that she kept well hidden from the world but only allowed you to see. It melted your heart into mush.
You lifted and rested both hands on either side of her shoulder. “Why don't you go ahead and take a shower. Start getting ready. We only have a few more hours until we are expected to be there and I have some last-minute gifts to stash under the tree so I need to do that before things get crazier.”
Kuvira nodded in agreement. “Ok.” She whispered softly, pulling away from you. Your hands coming to rest at your side.
She pointed in the direction of the bathroom, gradually walking in that direction. “I’m gonna go shower. I'll see you when you get back.” She said then walked out of the kitchen.
You grabbed your mug from the counter finishing the last of your coffee. Taking Kuvira’s empty mug in hand, you placed them in the sink. When you heard the sound of the bathroom door clicking close and the water turning on gave an indication you were in the clear. Carefully you walked into the bedroom and into the large walk-in closet. You pushed aside boxes and moved around clothed until you found a specific box that was buried under the lot. You pushed that box up to the side and began putting everything you moved back into place. Once finished, you lifted up the medium size box with both hands and walked back out into the bedroom. Taking a seat on the bed you peered into it, noting the number of objects that you had bought for each Beifong including Lin and Kuvira.
You shuffled through the pre-packaged gifts searching for one particular package that you didn't want Kuvira to open in front of the Beifongs. Your fingers closed around a long box. You pulled it free, giving it a quick glance to make sure the wrapping was still intact. You couldn’t suppress the smile that formed on your lips as you studied the box, feeling that familiar tug in your stomach at the idea of using it. You looked over at the closed bathroom door, listening in on Kuvira opening and closing the shower door. You were very tempted but knew it wasn't the right moment. With a small sigh, you leaned over to pull open the drawer to the nightstand, placed the gift quietly inside, and gently slid the drawer closed. Somethings were better to wait for. You hoped Kuvira would like it when the moment was right. The thought alone had you pressing your lips together to subdue your excitement. Yes you decided, there were some things in life worth waiting for and this was one of those things. Pushing the gifts back into the box you stood lifting up the box and left the bedroom, closing the door behind you for good measure. You walked out of the apartment into the cold winter afternoon and headed towards Beifong estate.
Once inside you immediately noticed that the chaos had slowed but not by much. Pushing through a group of servants putting last-minute decorations on the wall, you headed towards the parlor. When you enter you turn to peer around the corner to make sure that the coast is clear before proceeding in.  You approach the foot of the tree, placing the box on the floor and reaching in to pull out presents. You heard shuffling behind you which causes you to peer behind you. You waited a few beats making sure the coast is clear before turning back around to carefully place each gift under the tree.
You heard the sound of metal shoes tapping the stone floor heading in your direction. You stood up quickly, turning around just in time to see Lin and Suyin enter the parlor, their conversation ceased as they turned their gaze away from one another to where you stood, standing in front of the tree awkwardly.
“Y/N?” Suyin spoke first. Giving you a puzzled look. Lin stood beside Suyin eyeing you suspiciously as Suyin continued. “I thought you were going back to your quarters?”
“I did. I just wanted to put some things under the tree for later since your family usually unwraps gifts at midnight.” You stepped aside so they could see for themselves. The two inched closer and peered overseeing the neatly wrapped packages under the tree. Their suspicions died down.
“Oh, that is such lovely wrapping paper, you didn’t have to do that Y/N.” Said Suyin, pressing a hand to her chest.
“I wanted to do something nice.” You stated, noticing how Lin still watched you carefully. “I mean it is Christmas after all, the time for giving.”
“Exactly! I wished some people felt that way…” Suyin turned her attention to Lin, her eyes narrowed and lips forming a tight line.
“What? Lin said defensively, eyes widened when Suyin fixed her with an accusatory stare. “I came, didn’t I? You know I’m not one for family get-togethers.”
“While that may be true did you have to come in your work uniform?” Suyin said exasperated. “Honestly Lin don’t you wear anything besides your armor?”
“I came right from the station… it’s not like I have anything else.” Lin said matter of factly.
“Right… other than your extensive collection of coats,” Suyin said dryly.
“I don't even have that many Su.” Lin countered, “And besides what of it? It gets cold often in Republic City. So it is a necessity to have.”
“Lin, the fact that you have more coats than actual clothes is enough proof to show that you’re practically married to your work.”
“And that’s a bad thing?” Lin asked, not sure what Suyin was getting at with her argument.
“And what are you supposed to wear for tonight???” Suyin asked sharply.
You couldn’t help but stand there silently, watching the siblings squabble over Lin’s choice in wardrobe. You weren’t really surprised. The Beifong sisters could only remain civil long enough before they found something to bicker about. You knew the argument they were having was completely frivolous, but at that moment both women were so focused on it that they seemed to have forgotten your presence in the room. You wanted to leave, to let them go at each other. It would have been one less problem for you to deal with, but you knew that it would only set the tone for a tense gathering. You didn’t want anything to make things difficult for Kuvira. It already took enough convincing to get her to attend. With much apprehension, you tried to offer a resolution.
“Hey, If I may…” You began. Your voice was an octave higher than normal which worked in gaining their attention.
Both sisters stopped, switching their attention back to you to glare at you, causing a lump to form in your throat. You immediately regretted your choices but had no choice to continue unless you wanted them to round on you. “Su, Lin is a workaholic and that is not an unknown fact. And Lin as someone who understands being a workaholic, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a life.”
You clasped your hands together, addressing both of the Beifong sisters at the same time. “So, Su why don’t you rummage through your wardrobe and see if there might be something suitable for Lin to wear. If not maybe make a call to your tailor to see if they can come up with something last minute.”
Both sisters stared at you with blank expressions. You could see the gears in their minds clicking as they pondered your suggestion. Suyin shifted her gaze from you to address Lin. “I’m sure there is something in my closet we can find for you to wear Lin,” Suyin said mentally visualizing what she had accessible on hand that might be within Lin’s acquired taste.
“So long as it’s not frilly or makes me look like a clown I could care less,” Lin said dismissively. “At this point, I rather just wear a burlap sack.”
“Lin No! Stop” Suyin frowned, visibly horrified by Lin’s suggestion. “You are not wearing a burlap sack. We should be able to find you something. to wear. I am sure of it.”
“Fiiiinee…” said Lin begrudgingly, dissatisfied with the idea of having to play dress-up with Suyin. She was already dreading showing up.
“Great!” You exclaimed, rubbing your hands together before folding them together over your chest. “Now that it’s settled I will let you guys continue on with your discussion.”
You took a few steps forward with the intent to walk past them but were halted when Lin raised a hand in front of you, blocking your path.
“Hang on a moment Y/N, I need to talk to you.”
You raised a brow in suspicion. “About what?”
“Well as your parole officer I’m supposed to be checking in with you about once a month and it’s close to that time. The other issue being Kuvira.” Lin explained.
“What about Kuvira?” You asked hesitantly.
“I spoke with Su and she explained to me that Kuvira is showing signs of self-isolation.” Lin stood up straight, folding her arms across her chest. “Normally I don’t get involved with personal problems but seeing as it’s a perpetuating issue that is unresolved, it’s now officially my issue to deal with. Your mental stability is part of your rehabilitation. Can’t expect progress if either one of you is uncooperative and moping around.”
“I wouldn’t call it moping. And as far as I’m concerned she’s done everything she has needed to do. She’s just been distant with everybody… including me.” You expressed to Lin who listened intently.
Suyin interrupted, holding out an arm to gesture to the large sofas in the middle of the room. “Here, why don’t we all sit down,” Suyin said, laying a hand on Lin’s arm to gently lead her to a nearby sofa. You followed behind the two sitting down in front of them as they both sat together across from you.
“Look, It’s really not my place to say. I’m not one to divulge other people's personal issues… I’m sorry.” You apologized.
“I know you care about her and that you have a personal obligation to keep her affairs private but as your probation officer and Su as your guardian, it’s important that we know if there are any potential issues that might cause problems.” Lin pressed
“Kuvira is not trying to cause problems. She just doesn’t like the holidays.” You said, defensively
“If it’s just that then why is she refusing to cooperate with Su.” Lin countered.
“Lin, that’s not what I meant.” Suyin interjected, “All I said was that she has been extremely distant with me and doesn’t want to talk to me.”
“Su it’s the same thing!” Lin stated.
“It’s not the same.” Suyin exclaimed, “I never said she didn’t listen. Kuvira’s done everything I’ve asked her to do, but what bothers me is when I’m trying to reach out to her she closes herself off.” Suyin explained, her tone coming out pained. “I just want…” Suyin paused trying to hide the hurt that flashed across her face. “I just don’t want her to push me away…not again...” Suyin said softly.
“Su…” Lin whispered, placing a hand on Suyin’s shoulder in a comforting manner.
“I just want to know… what I did wrong this time,” Suyin whispered solemnly, tilting her head down to watch her hands pull at the fabric of her robes in her lap.
You could see the pain and concern that Suyin suppressed written all over her face. That same pained expression that she managed to hide earlier was there in full display. You couldn’t help but be surprised by it. It was almost hard to believe to see Suyin visibly hurt and near tears by Kuvira’s avoidance.  You knew that Suyin was not always direct about how she felt about Kuvira, but at that moment you could see how much Kuvira truly meant to Suyin. You secretly wished Kuvira could see for herself how much the matriarch cared for her. You wondered if it would be enough to kick Kuvira out of whatever funk she had been in up to this point.
“I know…” You said gently after a few moments, wondering what Suyin was thinking. You felt guilty for originally questioning Suyin’s intentions but just seeing her here in front of you now made you realize how inaccurate your perception was.
“It really isn’t anyone’s fault. Kuvira’s just being stubborn.” You said to Suyin, causing her eyes to meet yours. She saw nothing but empathy and compassion.
“No one is to blame for this.”  You reassured her. Suyin’s gaze softened, understanding that there was more to this delicate situation.
“I did manage to talk her into going. So she will be at the party tonight. Though I have to admit it took some convincing,” You admitted.
“She’s going to be there?” Suyin asked, eyes wide and hopeful.
“Yes, she has agreed to be there.” You confirmed, finding it hard to ignore the growing smile on Suyin’s face at the confirmation.
“But she hasn’t explained to you why she’s been distant?” Lin asked you directly, not satisfied by your answer.
“I mean she has told me very little about it.” You replied.
“What has she discussed with you, Y/N? Do you have any idea as to why she’s feeling the need to isolate?” Lin asked, pressing for an answer.
You took a moment to decide how you want to answer her question without giving her too much information. “As I had mentioned earlier to Su, I don’t think she is angry at anyone. If anything I think that she is just taking the opinions of others and the way people look at her way too seriously.”
“What do you mean by that?” asked Lin.
“What I’m saying is…” you paused, trying to find the right words to defend Kuvira the best way you could. “Though things have been really challenging for her since moving back to Zaofu. She’s trying her best to make amends and to fix her wrongdoings and personally… I don’t think she feels supported…”
“I don’t understand why she would feel that way,” Suyin said, confused. “I’ve been trying to get her to open up to me, but I haven’t had much luck… I’m at a loss as to what to do.”
“Su, I don’t think this is just about you or anything you are doing.” You stated quickly, not wanting your words to be taken out of context. “I just think her lack of support around her is causing her to feel hopeless and alone, but that’s my opinion. I mean besides you Su; who else has really tried to talk to her?” You asked, hoping that Suyin would begin to understand the message behind your words.
“I…” Suyin paused, it seems that she was starting to understand the situation. “I didn’t even think to consider how she’s been settling in since she came back… how she's even handling everything. I mean Kuvira is no stranger to rumors, but I didn’t even think about how detrimental they could be to her.
“Especially since she’s in a great state of emotional and mental sensitivity. The added stress could also be contributing to her sleep issues.” Lin chimed in, adding her input into the conversation.
You nodded your head in agreement. The two older women were starting to understand that the issue was far greater than themselves; it all came down to Kuvira herself. More or less her mentality and how people viewed her now that she was no longer the Great Uniter. Having so much power at once and literally having it stripped away would make anybody question their life choices and sanity, especially when it came down to their relationships with others. That is considering if the relationship was still salvageable.
“Maybe, it’s possible…You do bring up a valid point Y/N.” Said Lin, her hand coming up to scratch at her chin.
“Indeed…” Suyin nodded in agreement. “I believe at this point it would serve in both of our best interests if I were to have a sit-down conversation with Kuvira.”
“I think that would be for the best, Su.” Lin agreed. “Better to hear it directly from the source.”
“I want to hear what Kuvira has to say before assuming the worst.” Said Suyin, her face remained passive but her voice sounded apprehensive. “I’ve already told Y/N that I would have tea brewed to help with Kuvira’s sleep issues… I will find time to meet with her later.”
“I’m sorry I couldn’t help more.” You said, feeling an odd sense of guilt at keeping Kuvira’s weary behavior towards the Beifongs to yourself. You knew the two sisters meant well but there were some things that people had to find out for themselves, and this was one of those things.
“It’s okay Y/N,” Suyin reassured you. “It’s not your place to speak on Kuvira’s behalf. I’m just glad that she will be joining us tonight. Hopefully, everything goes smoothly…”
“I’m sure it will.” You stated.
“I mean what is a Beifong gathering without a little family drama,” Lin said nonchalantly.
“Lin!” Suyin whipped her head at Lin and narrowed her eyes. “Really?”
Lin shrugged her shoulders, “What? I’m just saying it’s pretty typical for our family to have some sort of drama or a reoccurring crisis during family get-togethers.”
“Well for once it would be nice not to.” Suyin spat.
“Anyways…” Lin began, brushing off her sister’s sass. “Besides that Y/N how have you been doing?”
“Oh you know, just helping out where and when I can.” You answered, feeling a bit awkward now that the conversation had diverted away from Kuvira and onto you. “I try to go where I'm needed.”
“Lately, Y/N has been helping me with reconstruction projects. I had her assist with a new design for our landscape project” Suyin confirmed.
“Yes, I have been trying to find ways to figure out how to make exotic plants thrive and reformat the layout of the grounds. It’s dirty work but I enjoy it. However, the weather has made it difficult to work so I will have to pick it back up when it gets warmer.”
Lin scoffed “Yeah, I don’t blame you. Getting here alone was a real pain. This storm is no joke. We had trouble with navigating our way here. At this rate, we might need to hunker down for a few days and wait out this storm.”
“Really? It’s that bad?” Suyin balked.
“Yes, visibility is terrible,” Lin confirmed. “If it wasn’t for it being daytime I highly doubt I would have been able to get here safely.”
“I’ll go ahead and have the rooms prepared just in case.” Suyin decided, her face etched with worry. “Hopefully the others will make it here safely.”
“They should, I radioed Korra and Tenzin before departing. They left after I did. From what I’m aware of they’re taking the future industry airship.” Said Lin.
“If that’s the case then I’m sure they’ll make it here safely. Asami has people that know what they’re doing.” Said Suyin, still showing visible concern.
Lin snickered at Suyin’s comment, earning a dirty look from Suyin. Her smug look vanished almost instantly. You resisted the urge to laugh, instead you bit your lip to suppress it. The way the two would throw shade at each other was something you found hilarious, not that you would make it known. One angry Beifong was enough to deal with… you didn’t want to do anything that would cause them to direct their anger at you. You doubted you would come out unscathed. That was a force you knew you did not want to reckon with if Kuvira’s description of their past fights was accurate as she claimed to be. You remembered when Kuvira explained to you their last fight. You almost didn’t believe it. It sounded so exaggerated and atrocious it was hard to believe. When you overheard the guards the other day talking about it after learning that Lin would be stopping by you couldn’t help but notice how nervous they became. Speaking cautiously in frantic whispers made you eavesdrop on the conversation. You had listened in on one of the guards complaining about how long it took to clean up the damage from the last time they fought. You remembered Kuvira mentioning it took weeks to fix the damage to the estate after the last time they went at each other's throats. Overhearing the guards talking with wide eyes and hushed voices made you wonder how extreme the fight was to cause that much damage. You definitely didn’t want to find out.
“Anyways…” you began, hoping to alleviate the tension. “Was there anything else you wanted to discuss? I probably should head back and start getting ready.”
Lin shook her head, “Not at the moment, I will get with you later on for your evaluation.”
“Sounds like a plan,” you confirmed, pushing yourself off the sofa into a standing position.
Suyin rose from the sofa, “In the meantime, I’m gonna have the rooms prepared for later. That way everybody can retire after and nobody has to travel through that dreadful storm. I will get with you later Y/N.”
Lin stood up, “I’ll go ahead and radio Asami to check-in with them. Just to be sure.”
You nodded your head in agreement, “Great, see you later.”
You smiled at the two, then turned to leave. Giving them the opportunity to finish their chat before they went to carry out their tasks. At least things couldn't get more invasive than you thought to yourself. You pushed open the doors to the estate and headed down the path back to your apartment, wondering what you would return to.

Parapraxis
Note: So this was inspired by @peachchanvidel’s post and partially by that one-scene in Brooklyn nine-nine. Hope you like this :)
Linzin AU, one-shot
Parapraxis: a lapse of memory or mental error, such as a slip of the tongue or misplacement of an object, which, in psychoanalytic theory, is due to unconscious associations and motives; commonly called a “freudian slip.”
---
If Lin Beifong were to look back at her life, she would think that some spirit was having a laugh at her expense – more than enough for her to wonder whether she had a past life that angered one of them.
 ---
The Dragon Flats Strangler had finally been caught and so the residents of the borough (and the police) could breathe a little easier now.
Chief Beifong tapped the report with her glasses, satisfied with the paperwork submitted. The sunlight was hitting her desk straight on, a signal that it was definitely later into the day and that she had not budged one bit since she sat down after lunch break.
She folded her glasses and placed it in its case. The pile of reports waiting on her desk signified that reviews and approvals were in her next hours. It was time to grab some coffee.
The police chief exited her room, seeing that everyone was working diligently on whatever assignments they had that week. None of that fake pencil pushing here in headquarters.
On her way to the pantry, she saw the Avatar nosily bothering Mako, who was, to his credit, shooing her away. Based on previous encounters with them, Lin supposed Korra was trying to wheedle the firebender into another double date with her and Asami, another blind date that the detective was adamantly against.
She decided to interrupt for the benefit of the firebender who was looking miserably at the pile of paperwork on his desk that the Avatar had been riffling through, likely looking for a piece of paper to write the details of the date on.
“Detective!” Chief Beifong approached the pair; Mako suddenly sitting up straight and Korra leaned back in her seat, waving weakly. “Good job on the paperwork on the Dragon Flats Strangler.” She frowned at Korra who was reaching over Mako’s desk to grab his pen. “I’d expect all of your files to be submitted with the same level of meticulousness and detail.”
Mako slapped away Korra’s hand. “Of course, Mom.” He answered distractedly.
Chief Beifong froze as did the Avatar – and everyone within hearing radius.
The detective managed to get his pen from the loose grip of Korra and proceeded to work on his next report.
Korra cleared her throat to get his attention, throwing a glance at Lin then placing an elbow on top of Mako’s paperwork.
“What?” Mako growled irritably.
“You called Chief Beifong Mom.”
Lin saw a brief look of panic on Mako’s face before it turned stoic again. “You must have misheard.”
“No, you did.” One of the other rookies from two desks to Mako’s right piped up.
Korra pointed at the man, nodding. “See, thank you!”
“No,” Mako emphasized but was quickly paling. “I said, of course Chief.”
“They’re right – you called me Mom.” Lin slowly enunciated then pursed her lips. “Detective Mako, do you see me as a mother figure?”
“I-I-I-.” The firebender could only stammer, a far cry from the capable detective who could easily spout off details of a report without even reading off a copy of it.
Normally, she would feel amused, but she took pity on the young man. “Don’t worry about it,” She attempted to downplay it. “We could have a mentoring session if you’d like, one of these days?”
Mako looked like a cat deer caught in the headlights of a satomobile so Lin quickly retracted. "Only if you’d want to of course, the offer stands but it’s not mandatory -.”
“Yes, I’d like that.” The detective managed to bite out.
She nodded and quickly went her way to the pantry.
Chief Beifong figured, having one more rookie to mentor is not so bad.
 ---
 “Higher, Dad, higher!”
The moment the words left her lips, Lin knew she messed up. She did not want to face Aunt Katara, who would likely pity reflected on her eyes. The earthbender just knew the older lady would be uttering the words “oh, sweetie” within the next few minutes, gently letting her down explaining that the airbender playing with her was not her father.
Lin knew that. It’s just – why can’t he be?
To the Avatar’s credit, he did not even bat an eyelash nor did he lose the rhythm of bouncing Lin up and down using an airball.
Before the waterbender could even remark on it, young Lin hollered quickly before she landed gracefully. “I know Uncle Aang’s not my dad – I just slipped, okay? Doesn’t mean anything!”
“Well,” Aang bent down throwing an arm around her and his airbending son, who was waiting patiently for his turn. “I wouldn’t mind being your dad. And after all, I could very well be your dad when you marry Tenzin here!” The airbender tightened his hold on the two children and brought them closer together.
“Ewww no!”
“Yuuuck!”
It would be a cold day in Si Wong desert before that would happen, Lin glared at the lanky airbender beside her.
Tenzin stuck out his tongue at her.
She rolled her eyes at him, stomping.
“Ow! No fair, Lin!”
Marry him? Of course not.
 ---
Lin twisted the cap of one of the many soju bottles she had stocked in her house.
She smiled with satisfaction at the crack that the cap made and poured herself a shot. She quickly threw it back, enjoying the subtle burn of the alcohol and making that pleased throat clearing sound after.
The earthbender placed one of her feet on her chair while another one dangled as she sat at her dining area. A variety of fried, greasy and fermented food that she bought earlier was spread on the table.
This was the kind of me time that she could get behind. No one to judge her as she indulged on alcohol and unhealthy snacks. It was, after all, a difficult day for her.
At least, as she picked at the sliced fermented radish and chewed pensively, she did not have to attend the wedding of the century. She was invited, of course, but it was obviously a courtesy invite. No doubt, Tenzin’s bride would not welcome her presence. So she gladly sent her regrets and mailed the RSVP note immediately without even second-guessing her herself.
She skewered a piece of grilled picken and dipped it in a sweet sauce.
The ceremony should be about finished at this time, she surmised as she took a bite of the meat. This would be followed by luncheon at the island and maybe a short program.
The metalbender took another shot.
Then later that night, there will be the fireworks, of course, sending off the last airbender and his bride.
Well, good riddance.
Lin had finished most of her food and was at her third bottle of soju. She was also at the middle of the book that she had impulsively purchased yesterday (fiction – she did appreciate the occasional escapism reading brought her) when her phone began to ring incessantly.
She decided to ignore it. Her officers could handle themselves for one day; she was sure there was not anything that would not keep until she was back. Anyway, her deputy was bound to be hammering on her door if there was something that urgently needed her attention.
For a few moments, the phone stopped ringing.
Thank Agni!
Then proceeded to ring again.
Lin groaned, she spoke too soon. Stretching herself from her perch in the dining room, she went to the living room to finally bark at whoever was at the other line for disrupting her day off.
“Beifong here – I swear if this is a salesman or you Saikhan I will -!”
“Lin!” The shrill voice cut through her reprimand.
Lin moved the phone away from her ear to stare at it, stunned.
“Lin? I know you’re there!”
It was Kya.
There was no reason for the sister of Tenzin to be calling her at this time.
“What is it?” She tamped down the irritation that the waterbender did not deserve from her.
“Have you heard the news – on the radio?” Kya’s words rushed forth. “Just wanted to give you a heads up – there’s bound to be something in the evening papers. The media would be keen to get your side as well – they’re having a field day! And -!”
“Kya! Kya!” Lin raised her voice to get a word in. “What are you talking about? I’ve given them my official statement for Tenzin’s wedding weeks ago.” She twirled the cord of the phone.
“Lin,” The earthbender recognized the strain in Kya’s voice. “Yes, it’s about the wedding but not in the context that you think.”
Lin paused in fiddling with the phone cord, sensing there was more to the story. “What happened in the wedding?”
“It’s Tenzin – he -!”
Donk-donk-donk! Donk-donk-donk!
Lin raised her head, hearing the loud pounding on the door. “Kya – is this important right now? Is it a security or safety issue?” The pounding on the door could only mean an emergency from headquarters.
“Well, no, but -.”
“Then it could wait.” Lin bit out harshly; if there was a life and death situation at the other side of the door, she could care less about Tenzin and his tacky wedding. “I’ll give you a call later.” She ended the call abruptly.
Donk-donk-donk-donk-donk-donk!
“I’m coming, I’m coming!” Lin hurried to her front door, taking care not to trip over her own feet. She definitely needed to sober up before going on field. Without even checking who was behind the door, she pulled it open. “Saikhan! What is the emergency?”
Her eyes widened.
Flying fishopotamus.
Tenzin was standing there in his formal wedding garb, dripping under the rain. He was breathing heavily as though he had rushed in getting to her Republic City house. Judging by his glider which was sitting pitifully in the mud, Lin thought he probably did.
“What the flameo are you doing here?”
Her voice pulled the airbender from his stupor. “Lin.”
Lin inwardly shivered. The way he whispered her name was almost reverently. She shook her head; she must be drunk.
The man took a step forward, a hand extending towards her.
She stepped back. “What are you doing here – you shouldn’t be here – you’re married.”
Tenzin shook his head slowly. “I don’t think I am.”
 ***
“Repeat after me – I, Tenzin –.”
“I, Tenzin - .”
“Take you, Pema to be my wife, my partner in life and my true love.”
“Take you, Lin to be my wife, my partner in life and my true love.”
 ***
“What the -!” Lin let loose a string of curse words that would have earned her soap in her mouth had she uttered them within earshot of her Beifong grandparents.
Tenzin stood back, letting the rain and the wind batter him down.
“What were you thinking!” Lin clenched and unclenched her fist, visibly restraining herself from punching the airbender. “Think about how humiliated Pema is! Your family, her family! Tenzin – go back there and grovel! Pema…” She caught her breath. “She doesn’t deserve this.” The light in her eyes dimmed and the fight seemed to seep out of her.
“And that’s why I’m here – why it’s still you!” Tenzin’s wild eyes sought hers. “Even after everything,” His tone softened. “You still think about others. That’s how selfless you are and how selfish I am.” He wiped back some of the rainwater from his forehead. He inched closer slowly and hesitantly. “Even after everything, it’s still you.”
 ---
Chief Beifong extremely disliked doing press conferences. Given the choice, as illogical as it would have been, she would have done away with the press (something has to be said of freedom of the press and freedom of expression though so obviously the press needed to stay).
After the wedding of the century devolved into the faux pas of the century years ago, Lin did not have fond words for the press. They skewered Tenzin’s reputation and dissected their interactions over the past months of that year.
It took a few more years and several scandals of prominent members of the nobility for their relationship (or lack thereof) to fade from public interest.
Ironically, it was during this period that they started to become closer (with a lot of work and effort from Tenzin, of course and Lin still vacillating between taking him back or not).
The media circus a rabbit hole she dare not get into again, so she better make sure that her speech is flawless.
She shuddered involuntarily as she reviewed her speech, head bent and hands rubbing her temples. She nodded at the staff who were silently hurrying around, making sure all of the microphones were set correctly and the chairs and tables were available for all attendees.
The press conference today was about the opening of the cultural center in Republic City. The council would be there to give their opening remarks and she would speak in her capacity as Chief of Police regarding how the area would be secured.
After all, the cultural center was situated in a reclaimed area which used to be lorded over by triads. It was up to the police force to ensure that no crime or act of terrorism befalls the center and its opening in order to encourage more investors into Republic City.
From her peripheral view, Tenzin’s robes swept close as he sat himself beside her at the conference table set up for them.
She paid him no mind as she ran her finger on the figures in the packet she was reviewing.
“Seems like a huge crowd will be joining the press conference today.” The airbender arranged his own set of papers as he commented on the people who was starting to gather in the venue.
The metalbender gave a soft grunt in reply.
“By the way, thanks for doing this Lin.” Tenzin shifted in his seat. “I know you could have easily sent a representative to speak for the Police Headquarters.” He murmured softly, inching his head closer to her. “And, personally, I appreciate your presence. You know how much this means to me, it’s a chance to show case my mother’s heritage.”
Lin inclined her head and responded vaguely. “Of course Tenzin, you know I love you so I’ll do what I can to support you fully.” She tapped her pen on her speech and encircled a split infinitive. She would need to proofread a little bit better next time.
She felt a warm hand grasp her wrist; she finally looked up at her seatmate. “What?”
Tenzin’s eyes were suspiciously watery.
Lin became conscious with how whispers were increasing in volume. She raised an eyebrow at the airbender in askance.
Tenzin bit his lip, swallowing before tentatively covering her hand with his.
What was he doing? Why was he doing this in public?
Her thoughts were running all over the place. It was not like Tenzin to be bold or even indiscreet.
“Tenzin.” She hissed.
“You just said you love me.”
“I…” Lin went back to what she did say, realizing belatedly that she did. “I guess I did.”
The whispers were definitely louder this time.
Tenzin gripped her hand tighter; his other hand gesturing forward.
Her heart skipped a beat.
A microphone had been placed on their table for sound check without her noticing it.
Her declaration had been heard in the entire hall.
 ---
Lin Beifong swirled the wine in her glass, silently observing the people weave in and out of the dance floor.
Say what you want of the damn convict, Varrick truly knew how to throw a party.
She reflected on her life so far.
As much as she had emphatically refused to have children, Lin woke up one day realizing that, without meaning to, she had inadvertently taken in several teenagers under her wing. Thank the Spirits that Mako, the one mostly with her, was someone after her own cranky taciturn disposition.
And, despite her steadfast refusal in her youth, in front of the man’s father, she looked at the ring that adorned her finger for decades, Lin found herself wed to Tenzin.
Something has to be said about slips of the tongue, of the unconscious. When you feel strongly about someone or something, it was bound to slip right out – the truth escaping the barriers that the mind has built.
If this was how the spirits feel like treating her after all those mortifying moments, Lin Beifong decided that she was not one to complain.
After all, Lin contemplated with wonder as she looked at the spirit portals across the island with her husband landing a soft kiss on her forehead, unplanned and spontaneous words come up with the best results.

Hc about how Kya stands up for Lin, in front of Su and tells her all the things Lin swallowed and how amazing she is and how much she really hurt her sister?
It happens after dinner at Air Temple Island one night when the kids are asleep and some of the adults have been indulging
By some I mean Su, who notoriously cannot shut up when she’s tipsy and has spent the last hour or so telling the Krew “hilarious” stories of Lin when she was younger. Everyone starts out laughing, but eventually the stories get less funny and more mean-spirited
Even Korra and Bolin are like “ummmmmmm...” Mako has gone very stiff. Things just get increasingly uncomfortable, but after the last time they got involved with a Beifong Family Argument, everyone’s a bit hesitant.
When Lin’s jaw twitches, Kya gives a warning “That’s enough, Suyin.” Su obv ignores her, but Lin puts a hand on her arm like “Thanks, but its not worth it.”
Lin leaves when Su begins ‘comparing’ their bending styles, telling Kya in no uncertain terms she needs a moment alone.
“Off she goes again to hide. Honestly, I don’t know why I keep trying if she’s so determined to be so bitter about every-“ “I SAID THAT’S ENOUGH, SUYIN!”
Not even Tenzin has seen Kya this angry before. But hot damn, every half-full glass in the room is wobbling as Kya rips into Su
“Why you keep trying? You’re the one who’s lucky Lin was willing to even look at you again, and it only happened because you used Korra and Opal to force your way back in. Lin had every spirits-damned right to drop you like a bad herring.” “Excuse me, she’s my sister-“ “You permanetly scarred her FACE! And after all she’s done for you and your family since you waltzed back in, biting her tongue and keeping herself from throttling you because of how much she loves you, you still poke and jab at every single painful wound every chance you get, like an ungrateful little spider-ant!”
This goes on for nearly ten minutes, and that’s only because Kya is sober enough to stop herself. If she’d been anywhere near as tipsy as Su.... hoooo boy
Su looks at everyone else for help and literally no one gives it. Pema just stares her down, having already had this conversation. Tenzin shakes his head, Mako glares full force.
After a bit, Korra and Asami sneak outside to go find Lin. She’s in the garden working out some frustration, so they tell her whats going on. She goes to try and stop Kya but Korra stops her. “Shes right, Lin. Su needs to be put in her place. And im sorry, for before. I should have listened to you.”
Later as they go to bed, Lin hugs onto Kya and says that she’s grateful, really, but she didn’t have to do that. Kya tells her she most certainly did.
