It all started with laly wondering if enstars fandom would exist in enstars world. I was like "yeah kinda like with k-pop" and we started thinking about who in es would write/read fics of what. Doesn't affect the dorms change just yet but i need to share these hcs:
- Kohaku knows everything about ships (because Aira dragged him in the enstars fandom hellhole) and once accidentally sent HiMERU a HiMERU x Tatsumi fanart instead of a document for work
- Mika reads ALL the Shumika fics
- Aira anonymously writes Hiiro/Kohaku x Reader fics except the reader is actually him because he doesn't have the guts to write actual KoHiiAi. Kohaku once recognize Aira writing style in a fic and ask him about it and Aira is immediately like "noooOOOO I DON'T SEE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT AT ALL"
- Leo hears about Izuleo at one point so he decides to check it out and read fics. And he creates himself an account to write Izuleo fics (that are more like poems-musical writing or something). And now he's trying his best to keep Izumi away from fics because he WILL recognize Leo's style. But the rest of knights ends up learning about Leo's fics and now they use it to blackmail him
- Aira also write Tatsumayo btw
- And now the hc that provokes the dorm changes...Aira also wrote like 3 Rei x Eichi enemies to lovers fics. Rei found it and he knows it has to be Aira because the situations described are way too accurate so it has to be their roommate
Aira: I don't feel safe in my dorm anymore...
Anzu: Why?
Rei, who read entirely the Rei x Eichi smut Aira wrote: ......

Kohaku, refusing to third-wheel them, joins Hiiai in their dorm, but before he can Tsukasa kidnaps him a second time so he goes to autistic dorm instead
Hiyori starts trying to pay ES so Eichi isn't in Wataru's dorm. But Eichi pay ES too. ES will never have financial problems again
Anyway so yeah at this point ES gives up on keeping order in the dorms and now everyone can go sleep wherever the fuck they want
So HiMERU break in Tatsumi's dorm to kill him scare him
Now Tatsumi decided he was safer in Mayoi's dorm
Koga: Great I have a dorm all for myself and Leon now!
Rei: *enters chat*

So now Rinniki are left alone

Oniisama e... Anime vs. Manga
I watched Dear Brother/Oniisama e... earlier this year, and only after hearing that the English blu-ray is going out of print soon, I decided to see if the original manga had ever been translated, and it was! I read through it and noted a number of differences, and not just the differences that are inevitable when adapting a 17 chapter manga into a 39 episode anime.
Largely, these are changes made in adaptation that I think make the story better, but still worth going through.
(spoilers for the entirety of Oniisama e.../Dear Brother below)
Nanako’s Parents Origin Story
In the anime, the exact nature of how Nanako’s mother and step-father got together is never fully revealed. The rumors that haunts her at school is that her mother seduced him while working as a hostess, and Nanako obviously doesn’t want to believe that’s true, but she also can’t really work up the courage to actually ask, either. In the manga, we see the exact sequence of events: Professor Misonoo’s wife already left him by the time he started going to the bar, and also Nanako’s father had left her mother. No moral complications, s’all good!
However, the real killer here isn’t that it’s no longer morally amibguous, it’s the way the information is revealed. In the manga, her parents explain this to her after Kaoru accidentally reveals that Takehiko is Nanako’s step-brother, but the anime equivalent is a private conversation Nanako has with Professor Misonoo in the last episode. It’s also the scene that has what I consider to be the thesis statement for the entire story:
When asked about Nanako’s biological father, he explains that he never screwed up the courage himself to ask his wife about him, because he knew that she would never say, and tells Nanako he knows she asked him because she also knew her mother would never say, and then drops this line. It’s applicable to so much of the series, but there’s something I found it especially relevant to, which segues into...
Fukiko
Fukiko Ichinomiya is my favorite character in this anime, and it turns out that most of that was in adaptation. I think this is something that will be received different for different people, but Fukiko was so much more of a normal teenage girl in the manga. The anime presents her as this ultra-composed pillar of dignity and grace and lurking below that surface is an emotionally stunted 12 year old girl, and in the manga, she still has the veneer of being ultra-composed but it constantly, and visibly, cracks. Compare her expression when Kaoru first tells her that she thinks the sorority should be abolished in the manga versus the anime:
The more dramatic example for me is when Fukiko drops that she used her station to get Nanako into the sorority. In the manga, it’s an accidental angry outburst that she tries to brush off, but in the anime, it’s a pointed, conscious decision, confirming Nanako’s fears as a way to threaten and intimidate her:
That can also be chalked up to artistic direction: all the Dezaki works I’ve seen (with the possible exception of Hamtaro (for real)), the characters never deform or otherwise go off model for the sake of dramatic reactions or even comedy beats, and the same largely goes for the backgrounds. I also think it may be a choice to lean more into what Rei reveals about Fukiko, and how she’s the only person who ever saw Fukiko with her guard down and otherwise carries herself with the utmost dignity and grace. But hey, another segue speaking of Rei and her relationship with Fukiko!
The Relationship Between Fukiko and Rei
This is maybe my least favorite difference in the manga from the anime, and really highlights the fact that in the manga, Fukiko wasn’t really much of a fully formed character. Unlike the anime, where the relationship between Rei and Fukiko is a fucked up abusive co-dependent nightmare, in the manga, it’s a fucked abusive one-sided nightmare. Namely, this scene, which to my recollection doesn’t exist at all in the anime:
In the anime, this is recontextualized entirely: rather than Fukiko looking down her nose at Rei and taking satisfaction from her own superiority, she’s wildly possessive and jealous of Rei because her satisfaction comes from how much Rei admires her.
There’s probably an argument to be made that Fukiko was just lashing out at Rei in response to the sorority petition, but again, that would tie into “boy Fukiko is a much different character in the manga than in the anime”, and outside of her reaction to Rei’s death, there’s not much to indicate that might be the case.
And this also ties into maybe two of the three biggest changes between the manga and anime: first, Rei commits suicide by overdosing on her drugs in the manga, versus accidentally falling to her death in the anime, and second, Fukiko actually doesn’t know Rei’s her full sister in the manga, versus the anime where she knew all along. I think this also adds something to Nanako’s character, that she’s burdened with the knowledge that each of them knew about their relationship, but can never say anything about it.
More Depressing, Less Catharsis
Two major contributing points here, the first of which is Rei’s suicide. Dying accidentally in the anime is more tragic, with the implication being that she was getting better, but her suicide is a pointed “sometimes, your feelings just can’t reach people”, which is definitely more depressing (and depressingly realistic).
The second, and one which is on the same wavelength as “more depressingly realistic” is the reveal that Kaoru’s breast cancer came back, and she passed away. And this was after the same sweeping marriage ceremony and departure to Germany in the anime, so the delivery of this information on the last page of the last chapter is so abrupt it could be considered black comedy.
No reflection on the fact that at least she was able to spend the time she had left with the one she loved or anything of that sort, just “cancer do be like that”. Call me a sentimental bitch, but I much prefer the anime version that “two years later, she hasn’t relapsed and they had a child!”
Riyoko Ikeda Draws Some Funny Faces
Circling back to the point about art direction; with fewer total pages to work with and not having the benefit of sound cues and cuts, the manga does often rely on cartoonish deformation to get emotions across succinctly, and I’ll be damned if Ikeda’s not good at making some funny face.
There’s more- both funny faces and differences in content- but I think that covers the major points for me. The manga is still a good read, but I think it works better as a complementary piece to read after watching the anime.

Us, Deadmanz, are Sakuma-senpai’s real successors. That’s why we hadta shut up those losers who claimed they were.
We was mainly active in the livehouse, ‘n we got more ‘n more famous. Everyone down here supported us.
Kaoru: Compared to those hooligans wearing matching outfits, you guys were just doing your idol activities - you were pretty much harmless.
It would have been way better for us locals if you guys had said you were Rei-kun’s successors.
Maybe it was because I was always around you guys that people were saying I was a member of Deadmanz. It started to really annoy me.
And Hasumi-kun, without asking me, wrote my name down on the official documents and made me your guys' friend.
Maybe he thought that if he did that, it would stop me from skiving?
Rei: I’ll defend Hasumi-kun’s reputation and confess - those were my instructions.

But the foundations of the UNDEAD we know today had been laid, so it was all worth it in the end, hm?
Whilst Hasumi-kun pulled out midway through, the main members of UNDEAD were brought together whilst all that turmoil was occurring.
Then, before any of us could say anything, Koga had changed the name to UNDEAD—
Deadmanz had been reanimated and was alive once again, as UNDEAD.
Kaoru: Look how far we've come.
Adonis: Umu. What we don’t understand now is how events that are taking place right in front of our eyes are inconsistent with ‘historical fact’.
Maybe because this is just a dream, so things are unfolding in ways we don’t understand—

“Go away, Tatsumi Kazehaya.” HiMERU said, just barely above a whisper. His voice was shaky but still full of conviction.
Instead, Tatsumi leaned his cane against the wall and sat next to HiMERU. He seemed hesitant before speaking. “Kaname-san, if it’s okay for me to call you that now--”
HiMERU doesn’t even think as he moves his hands to Tatsumi’s throat, straddling the other man. “Keep his name out of your mouth or ‘I’ will remove it for you.”

Flashback | PSYCHOBREAK 5

Characters: Adonis, Koga, Rei, Kaoru
Koga: Just remember. If ya try n' pull any funny business, I'll crush ya mercilessly.
This feels like somethin' Adonis would say, but… I'll protect UNDEAD.

Adonis: Through the "subsidiary" HELLSING, we've been able to expand the scope of our activities.
Thanks to that, I believe we will be able to provide adequate service to all our fans, satisfying everyone.
Though it does feel a bit lonely to be separated from our real senpai.
Koga: Not like that's anythin' new. After all, we were separated for a bit right after those two graduated from Yumenosaki, too.
Things've just gone back to bein' the way they were.
Adonis: That does not make it less lonely. But it can't be helped, this seems to be the best solution at the moment.
We will maintain the status quo and continue with our idol activities while investigating the mastermind behind the "AIIE" experiment.
By uncovering the truth, we can find a fundamental solution to the problem.
As for what comes afterwards, we will have to cross that bridge when we come to it.
Koga: It ain't our job to think too hard. All we can do is to keep tirelessly dealin' with each problem as it comes, like children pilin' stones on the banks of the Sanzu River.¹
Just hopin' that maybe this time, it won't all fall apart.
Adonis: It's a precarious tightrope to walk. All we can do is try our best not to fall.
Koga: Yeah. So somehow or other, we'll find out who's behind this incident n' destroy 'em before anythin' goes wrong.
Adonis: …But what if I really am the culprit?
Koga: The hell? How the fuck could it be you? I'd believe it was almost a~anyone else over you! Ya can't even bring yerself to kill bugs, can ya?
Adonis: Do you remember the dream we saw during the experiment?
In that dream, we witnessed memories of the past which seemed to differ slightly from the actual events which occurred in reality, and there was one particular incident which stood out.
Delinquents calling themselves "vampires" ran around causing trouble, weakening the town's security.
The leader of those "vampires" was said to be me, Otogari Adonis.
Koga: The only one claimin' that was the past Sakuma-senpai. Even in that shitty dream, there wasn't any real proof, n' you were released in the end due to inconclusive evidence.
Adonis: Yes. But because of that, the atrocities being committed by the "vampires" did not stop.
In real life, Hasumi-senpai — wielding the student council's authority — lead DEADMANZ to suppress the delinquents.
But in the dream, the "vampires" continued to run wild.
Even the past Sakuma-senpai could not convince them to stop.
Though they were originally supposed to be his devotees, they had become completely dedicated to their new boss, only listening to his orders.
Koga: And that new boss was you?
So what, you tryin' to say yer on the same level as Sakuma-senpai?
Adonis: Of course not, I don't have that kind of charisma. But there are no other suspects, and even though those memories were distorted, I cannot help but to feel that Sakuma-senpai would never make a mistake.
If he says I'm the culprit, I'm sure it must be true.
Koga: God is always just, huh? C'mon, just what do you take that guy for?
Curious as I am about that, though, it's not really relevant. All that stuff was just a dream. The problem is this absolute chaotic mess we're dealin' with in reality.
Adonis: …Is this truly reality? Or is it just another dream?
Strangely, it doesn't feel real. Everything's kind of floaty.
Koga: Well, it is a seriously unrealistic turn of events. But no matter what, this is the world we live in, and this is where our souls reside...
So we have no choice but to keep doing our best to survive.
Rei II: […Done talkin' yet?]
Koga: ……
Rei II: [Cause we're good to go over here~ Don't worry, we followed yer instructions properly when dealin' with Hasumi-bou.]
[It's seriously tough recreatin' that old man talk though, so he might be a bit suspicious.]
[Buuut, even someone like him'll have a hard time guessin' this kinda science fiction-y turn a' events.]
Adonis: We thought so too. Dealing with Hasumi-senpai's interrogation must've been tough. Thank you for your hard work Sakuma-senpai, Hakaze-senpai.
Kaoru II: [……]
Koga: Hey, Adonis, ya don't gotta bother showin' any respect to these assholes. But, weeell, you're the kinda guy who even speaks kindly ta yer harmonica, so I guess it can't be helped, huh?
The fake Sakuma-senpai's at least tolerable, but the fake Hakaze-senpai's especially bad. He won't even talk to us, let alone make eye contact.
There ain't any need t' be polite ta someone who's so rude.
Kaoru II: [Hey, so like~?]
[Could you please stop trying to get me involved and stuff? I'm like, so not into the idea of investing time and effort into guys, y'know~? ♪]
[That's why I haven't been talking. I'm doing my job properly, so it's not a problem, right?]
Koga: O, oh, 'kay… Man, there's somethin' kinda nostalgic about this Hakaze-senpai...
Right, these guys're copies of us from a while ago. Guess that means the fake Hakaze-senpai's still actin' like a dumb playboy.
Well then, since people might get suspicious if I go around callin' ya fakes in public, from here on out I'll call ya Playboy and Vampire Bastard ².
Rei II: [Do as ya like.]
[By the way, Hasumi didn't come by just to interrogate us. He was apparently actin' as a messenger for someone in the upper echelons a' RhythLin.]
[Seems like our recent achievements have been acknowledged, n' we're gettin' a tour soon.]
[We'll be travelin' nationwide, singin' for the sake a' the fans who love our "radical n' immoral" selves.]
[Rock, Rock, Rock n' Roll ♪]
[Ain't it great? It's like a dream come true, right, Puppy?]
Koga: …The ones I wanted to sing with weren't you two, though~
Well, whatever, it can't be helped. Until the mastermind's been defeated, I'll just obediently follow the path fate's laid out for me.

tl;dr: A saying meaning to repeatedly perform a difficult task for no recognition/reward.
The Sanzu River is the river said to be at the border to the underworld, which the dead must pass over to reach the afterlife. The weight of a person's accumulated sins, offset by their merits, is said to determine how difficult the crossing will be, as well as whether the person will go to heaven or hell. Children who die before their parents are said to be too young to have accumulated any merit, while also being weighed down by the sin of being unfilial to their parents. Due to their young age, instead of being condemned to hell, these children are instead told to demonstrate filial piety by piling up stones to build a pagoda honoring their parents, which will allow them to accumulate enough merit to safely cross the river. However, whenever a child gets close to finishing their work, a demon will come by and topple the stones, forcing the child to start over again.
For those unfamiliar with UNDEAD's ! era stories, these were Koga's old nicknames for Kaoru and Rei. He switched to using their names after Repayment Fes, with the implication that it was because he wholeheartedly felt them worthy of his respect from that point on.
