Ranking the six main boy/girl ships in Yu-Gi-Oh from best to worst!

Not all main girl ships are created equally, I'm afraid. Let's take a look at each ship and see what's up! (Except Sevens because as I mentioned in a previous post, I am way too far behind to comment on anything in that show.)

First up is Anzu and Yugi! And YES I do ship them! However, I don't ship Atem and Anzu. Anzu was friends with Yugi, and started to see him in a different light when Atem started showing up. However, those changing feelings also started to influence her feelings about Yugi as well. We saw that in Duelist Kingdom. Then in season 2 when she realizes they're two separate people, she gets really confused! Anzu doesn't know how to feel anymore! Then Atem and Yugi are both playing wingman for each other, so that's not helping matters. I don't really ship Atem and Anzu because Atem just doesn't seem super interested in their date. I know he had other things on his mind, but if they wanted me to ship it, now was the time to show off some chemistry and they didn't.

We saw in GX that Yugi grows up to look just like Atem and he also grows more confident over the course of the series. After the end of Duel Monsters, I think they're both too hurt by Atem's passing to be digging on each other. But, distance makes the heart grow fonder, and I feel like she's gonna come back from the states and have some heart-pounding feelings when she sees him again. And Yugi's feelings didn't change, they were just put on the back burner. So hopefully when they meet back up, sparks are gonna fly! At least, I hope so. <3

Next up is Asuka and Judai! When I watched their first duel, I was 100% on board with this ship. They were cute, they had great banter, it was a fair fight. I loved it! But over the course of the series, I started losing interest in their relationship, fast. By the end of season 2 I was pretty convinced they had abandoned Asuka x Judai for Asuka x Manjoume, and honestly, I was 100% on board with that, I love a good romcom couple and those two have dysfunctional romcom energy. Plus they had evil power couple vibes when they were running the Society of Light together, so I thought for sure they were gonna have Manjoume and Asuka be better friends post possession.

Then season 3 came a long and I was like "woah, they DID do that on purpose! I was right!" when we saw the Judai x Johan x Yubel love triangle they spent the entire season on. Asuka and Manjoume were of course relegated to background characters, as was everyone who wasn't a transfer student. And then the series ended with a pretty definitive Judai x Yubel ending and I was like "cool I like it".

But then season 4 made me question everything by making it clear that Asuka was still crushing on Judai?!?! Uhhh.... what? You haven't mentioned this crush in OVER TWO YEARS ASUKA. You've both changed so much! I thought the whole point was "she had a fleeting crush on him in year 1, but people change and so do our feelings"! I thought they had her fall out of love with him on purpose!! You're telling me the writers just wanted us to ASSUME she was still in love with him this whole time?!

I honestly love the whole "had a crush on him, now that I know him better, he's an amazing friend but I don't like him that way anymore" dynamic and they RUINED IT so bad. And for what? To say "well they fought the whole time, but now look! They can tag duel together!" Well, jokes on them, because a few episodes later Judai and Johan will show off some of the tightest teamwork in the show and I'll have to throw Asuka x Judai in the trash. </3`

Yusei x Aki!!!!!! AHHHHHH I LOVE THEM. Their first duel is very romantic in my opinion. Yusei lives to help people, and it's actually a flaw of his that he'll help people no matter the cost. Usually that's sort of a "who cares" flaw in a protagonist, but for Yusei, it adds a lot of depth to his character. The reason he helps people even at the cost of himself is because he feels enormously guilty due to his parents' involvement in Zero Reverse, and he feels like he owes the world (but especially Satellite) everything. Yusei tried to go to jail in Kiryu's stead, but failed, and I think that only compounded his guilt even more.

Then, when Yusei sees the chance to help Aki, he does it. He's scared of her, but he rallies his courage to face her so that he can help her. And it's only natural that Aki would fall hopelessly in love with him after he continually put himself at risk over and over again JUST to help her. I love the episode where she rescues him from being kidnapped and then accompanies him on a riding duel. I think it hits me harder because it reminds me of how much I want to drive a motorcycle but can't because of reasons I won't go into. But part of her desire to learn to riding duel is because she wants to feel the same things Yusei feels. And that's so cute!

Unfortunately, I do have a certain headcanon that gets in the way of my shipping desires. I won't get into the whole headcanon, but I think Yusei might have ended up time travelling back in time to fix Zero Reverse and prevent Zone's future. And Aki wouldn't have come with him because we see her in the flashforward. Yusei is still giving her strength though. And I like to think that maybe a much older Yusei was able to help a much younger Aki control her powers and not enter a cult in the new timeline. And if my headcanon isn't true, then GET MARRIED AND HAVE BABIES GUYS. <3

On the one hand, I love Kotori x Yuma. They’re so adorable! Not only is Kotori surprisingly self-aware of her crush (usually the YGO girls love to deny it) but Yuma clearly treats her differently from the rest of his friends, even though he doesn’t know why (yet). Kotori’s confession at the end of the show is SO CUTE AND ADORABLE and Yuma accepts and I love it!

But… I can’t love it as much as I WANT to love it. Kotori’s character, especially in Zexal II is kind of boring. I liked her a lot in Zexal I actually. I thought it was fine to have a character not duel as long as she was doing something else. In season 1 she occasionally gets shit done. Or she’s there for comic relief like when she’s riding the duel coaster. Or arguing with Orbital 7. It wasn’t much, but it was something. In season 2, she’s a total non-entity. I thought the duel where she gets possessed was very funny, but I almost wish that her getting possessed by a Barian was played for drama rather than laughs.

I think what could have been cool is either a) after she can hear Astral, her and Astral team up for a duel or b) when watching Yuma she started to memorize his strategies. Or both. Or neither, just get this girl something to do BESIDES watch Yuma! In the end, my love for how adorable these two are is always somewhat soured by Kotori’s squandered potential. <3

Speaking of squandered potential, Yuzu and Yuya are next on the list. I love these two A TON! I’ll be perfectly honest and admit my biases here, I am NOT the biggest fan of Arc-V. The show had a lot of problems, and I’m harsher on it than most.

But one thing I really did like about the beginning of the show was Yuzu! She was independent, driven and her dueling was getting better as the show progressed. Just like Kotori, she became a non-entity in the latter seasons. However, I ship Yuya x Yuzu more than I ship Yuma x Kotori because Yuya was always keeping Yuzu in mind during the latter seasons. So it still felt like the ship was in focus, whereas with Kotori x Yuma, the ship kind of disappeared since more important things were going on. For Yuya, nothing was more important than getting Yuzu back, so really I had no choice BUT to ship it. How could I not? It was so sweet! She was his whole world! I wish we got more scenes with the two of them together though. Them never tag dueling is a crime against humanity. Also its total BS that only Yuya and Yuzu got to come back, but whatever, I guess. I was happy that the two of them reunited and even HAPPIER that the show was finally over. <3

Last and basically least, Yusaku x Aoi. Or Playmaker x Blue Maiden. I’ll be honest, I don’t ship this at all. The show doesn’t go through any effort to get us invested in their so-called “relationship” and if I had watched this show on its own, unaware of the series’ tropes, I wouldn’t have assumed they were a “ship” at all. With Judai x Asuka, I actually liked the fake out (at least until S4 when I wondered whether or not the fake out was actually on purpose or if the writers are just morons) but with Yusaku x Aoi I get frustrated because it wouldn’t have been that hard to GIVE them some chemistry. They’re both interesting characters, and I think Aoi and Yusaku could have had an interesting dynamic if Aoi had learned Playmaker’s identity a lot sooner.

What I think the show should have done was have Aoi discover Playmaker and Soulburner’s identity at the same time they discovered each other. Then have Aqua come into the fold a lot earlier. Trios are popular in fiction for a reason, and I think Yusaku, Takeru and Aoi would have been an excellent trio. Specifically, with both Yusaku and Aoi being so reserved, their relationship would be very understated. But that’s not a bad thing. It just means that the writers would have to put more focus on the little things. Like, maybe after a while of being friends, Yusaku sits next to her in class. That would be a small thing for other people, but for those two, that’s huge! I could also see there being a fun episode where Ai tries to trick them into going on a date but fails spectacularly. The two of them end up spending time together to foil the plan. That could be really cute! LITERALLY ANYTHING is better than NOTHING.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I don’t ship this because the writers thought they could get me to ship it just by having boy meets girl and then having them shake hands over a hundred episodes later. And no. I refuse. I need a LITTLE more than that, please and thank you. </3

That was a very long post! All in all, 4/6 ain’t bad at all! Or maybe it’s more like a 3.5 since I only gave Kotori and Yuma a small heart? It doesn’t really matter, I’m a multishipper. At my heart and soul, I’ll ship anything. Like I said I don’t ship Judai and Asuka, but I totally have shippy fanart of them on my phone, lol. It’s more like… which of these ships would I defend in court and which ships do I only like because I’m trash that’ll ship anything?

Oh, I guess I did title this as a ranking... Well, I'm sure you can figure out my most and least favourites by how much I used caps lock, so it should be fine.

Give me ANY Yu-Gi-Oh ship (straight, gay or in between) and I’ll dissect it like I did these six.

Ensemble Stars Event Translation: Fleur De Lis Prologue 1

It’s been 84 years and I’m back on my BS with another translation. If you’re wondering where Various Crossroads is, it’s…..it still exists. But since my partner is busy with work, this is just my solo project for fun (debatable). Also it was requested by one of my close friends so there’s that.

If you’re wondering what I was doing just now, then Anzu-chan should know what it is, right? I was carrying out my daily routine of self-intoxication.

Praising yourself by saying you love yourself and caring for your being are both very important things. Make sure you remember that, okay Anzu-chan?

Rather than going easy on yourself, you’re the type to abuse yourself more and more. There are times when I look at you and find it pitiful.

Isn’t it fine to take a breather sometimes?

For example, like going to look at flowers and picking them……

Right, right, talking about flowers made me remember this, but it was just the other day, I think? I visited a flower garden for a model shoot.

It just so happens to be the season to go see the autumn flowers, and since there’s also a flower and music festival……I’m sure it’ll be lively on that day so I recommend checking it out.

Yeah, it’s called “Fleur De Lis” and it’s a festival that’s carried out every year around this season.

…….Ju~st kidding. It’s just something I also happened to hear of when I visited that place for the shoot, but it seems to be one of the special features of the autumn garden festival.

Since it’s a flower and music festival, it seems a lot of female guests attended last year.

So it got me wondering if we could take part in it as well, see?

Ever since the “King” came back, “Knights” has been continuously rising to the point where people are calling it a revival of veterans, but……

We can’t say for certain that it’ll be the same from here on out, right?

I think it’s a good idea to acquire new fans from around here.

But either way, whether or not we can participate in “Fleur De Lis” will depend on the “King.”

Oops, sorry for just rambling on like that all by myself. Anzu-chan, you came to the studio because you had some business here, right? ……A bed?

Ohh, are you talking about the bed Anzu-chan made especially for Ritsu-chan’s sake? Since the weather is nice today, you thought of airing out the futon?

You really are a genius at increasing the amount of unnecessary work for you to do, huh?

If it’s Ritsu-chan’s futon then it should be in that spot it always is……Oh my, is that a giant caterpillar?

Oh my gosh, I didn’t realize at all that Ritsu-chan was here.

I mean, up until Anzu-chan called out to me I was completely absorbed in myself, remember? I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings at all.

Or rather, I was only paying attention to myself……☆

Ritsu-chan, you heard her right? Don’t stay wrapped up in your futon forever and wake up, will you?

Ritsu: Ugh~……I was sleeping so well just now I don’t know anything about drying my futon~

Arashi: You heard perfectly fine, didn’t you? Really now, Ritsu-chan’s got such a grip on his futon that he won’t let go of it.

It’s almost like taking a child’s favorite toy away from them, so I feel bad.

As you can see, Ritsu-chan has transformed into becoming an inhabitant of his futon, so would it be fine to put off drying his futon for another time?

Old Pilots Tales

I was new to the game. I know the old hands are making fun of me half the time. I don't know the ten thousand little things about how these amazing machines work. I was a mining engineer working for Star Industries Extraction piloting miner mecha on whatever outworld had something they needed to keep up the manufacture of stargates, of the great bulk carrying starships, and of course, their most popular seller, the fighting mecha. I had been sent to Pirate Moon with a shipment of Niobium for processing. I know the name says how dangerous that is, but the unprocessed stuff cannot be taken through a star gate without the chance of its uncoordinated niode matrix randomly spinning you off into some alternate reality or onto the mirror side of gate space where legend has it only the dead roam.

Our guard force got poisoned by some sort of infiltrators when the pirates attacked. I wasn't going to let my whole paycheque just walk out the door on the first Pirate Anzu that ran up, so I figured I would try the Warhorse. How different could it be than my miner mecha? Kind of a lot different. I am so surprised I survived the first fight. Janet, the receptionist hopped in a Red Ant and proved to be a pretty good shot. We ran off the pirates and got our pay for saving the shipment. It turns out to be about three times my cut of producing the damned thing, and even more than Janet got out of manning the front desk and communications console, so we decided to go mercenary.

We got us some serious hardware after a few missions, and now I was running a Novum, and Janet an Orcus. Our pilots were in brand new Imech with guns a little bit better than I could buy at my level of licence, so we were doing OK. Except I was having no luck getting my Novum up to level, both Janet and I were two levels behind the Imech, and I was really on the fence about selling a couple of guns to upgrade us. I put everything I had into equipment for our two niode machines, and trusted I could earn enough to keep us caught up, but we had been levelling up faster than we had been getting niodes. We had won a Commisar on our last trip through Pirate Moon, and it was four levels behind. I didn't regret not selling it, as it was a sweet machine, but I was never going to get it caught up to the rest of us at this rate.

We were out on patrol on Pirate Moon, hunting for some of the bad guys that had been shooting up the place when we saw it. Right out of the Old Pilots Tales, one of those total BS stories you know were invented to scare children and mock newbies like us. Except, there it was right on our sensors.

There was a ring of dancing Vizi, Zadok, and Nephillax. Three of each. It was a Craftsman Circle. The Old Pilots Tales said that this was a celebration the Craftsmen did for special occasions, major anniversaries, averted planetary catastrophes and really good third quarter earnings. The legend said that if you could dance in the heart of the Craftsman Circle you would be upgraded as you danced. The old pilots love to make newbies like us do stupid things just so they could laugh at us, and I was sure this was one of them. Of course every once in a while they were telling the truth. Like the bit about the kickback in a Handheld Nuke, granted the name should have let me know it was dangerous, but wow did it pack a punch when you used it. It also punched you out just as consistently, so the old pilots tales in that case actually were true.

I went on my communications link to tell my squad to pass by the Craftsmen at a distance, because you seriously do not want to offend the creatures that created mecha before the Forerunners had anything to be running in front of in the first place, but I was too late.

Janet began singing and raced her Orcus to join the circle of dancing Craftsmen. They accepted her as the mad little cannon cat spun and whirled with them, and then they shifted so that she was dancing in the middle of a circle of dancing Craftsman machines. Something strange started blazing between the Craftsmen machines, washing over the Orcus until it blazed like a star under the almost airless black sky of the Pirate Moon. Janet screamed. I thought at first she was in trouble and started to move forward, but she screamed louder and this time laughed with it.

"Again, again, oh please Craftsmen, one more please!" She had instantly been upgraded. I opened my communication link and told her "That's enough Janet, you only get one a day!"

Or not.

She kept dancing, and her mecha began to blaze even brighter. The Craftsman circle broke around her as she lay upside down and giggling on the ground. I ran my sensors over her and she had indeed levelled up twice for no time or niodes spent.

I took a chance and wove my Novum into the dance of Craftsmen. I spun and swooped and whirled, letting the celebration of the Craftsmen take me away. I could lose myself in the music, and followed where it led. I caught flashes of year after year of mecha combat, from the early small simple machines, to the great monsters of today. I saw the rise of the first clans, the first Clan Wars, the Factions. I saw the explosion of the arts of war in full glorious detail and as the vision burned into me I felt my Novum transform. I cried out in joy, for I could feel it growing beneath me, a new cockpit slot beginning to form within my hull. I kept dancing, until another wave of glory filled my mind, visions of war, two universes colliding, a cold drab universe of peace and pure order where the Craftsmen were hunted down and wiped out, and our own glorious chaotic universe where war is constant, but genocide is forgotten. My Novum crashed to the ground, and I could feel its claws aching as it began to grow a new weapons slot as well. I also had gained two levels from the dancing mecha.

I wobbled my Novum back into the air to see Wan Lo dance his new Commissar into the ring of dancing mecha and spin its little twenty ton heart out. Four times he blazed and flared, and four times his mecha upgraded for him.

That was eight. Eight instant upgrades in a single day.

If you see them, the ring of dancing Craftsmen, then take your place among them and join in the celebration. Dance the dance of Mecha Galaxy, celebrate our wonderful journey from the first halting steps of the Red Ant to the last rumbling stomp of the Penner. Sure its an Old Pilots Tale, but you know what, those old pilots are only lying half the time, and the rest is solid advice to keep you alive in a hostile galaxy. What have you got to lose?

The Craftsmen are celebrating the anniversary of Mecha Galaxy by offering you the chance to burn eight instant upgrades in a single day. For as long as it lasts, they are giving you the gift of power. You can stand on your pride and tell everyone how you are too smart to believe any old pilots tales, but me? I am ready to level up again, and put on my dancing shoes for another ring around the Novum!

This beats the heck out of working for a living.

purple! i know i promised to give you some time to work through all my ask, but i suddenly had ANUZ!feelings and woops: i can see the puzzledorks trying to set the other up with anuz cuz shes great and obviously the other would totally be a great couple with her (and atem still owes yuugi back for that date ofc), but anuz takes one look at this bs and blindsides both of the by inviting them for a date...with each other. in the end, anuz is the one watching from the side with the quiet fond smile

Haha, one of my favorite aspects of all sides of the Encourage trio is every member REALLY WANTS THE OTHER TWO TO BOND AND TALK AND JUNK. The romantic ambitions of this on any side is up to debate, but definitely. No one backs Yuugi & Anzu like Atem, no one pushes Atem to open up to Anzu like Yuugi, and no one tries to prompt emotional openness and insight between Yuugi & Atem like Anzu.

They’re just great people to have in one another’s lives, however you read it.

okay so back on my anzu x idol bs. non thirsty ramble. more like. whod understand her when she opens up about her time in kimisaki and all the shit with the peace party/producer course/etc.

okay so no brainer trickstar gets her. but let's talk about others that might get her on a deeper level:

JUN. OH MY GOD. REIMEI ACADEMY IS LIKE KIMISAKI WHERE SLACKERS ARE PUSHED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE HEIRARCHY AND RIDICULED. at least that's how it was when anzu attended (getting through engirls main story still. things are. slightly diff as her brother is attending but also there are parallels with ! era anyway-) if she ended up absentmindedly talking about her past with him while they're having lunch during work or whatever, he'd be like "i'll drink to that." and it'd escalate. bc now he's hearing about how the producer course treats her and he's like "well what the fuck. this is what goes on in yumenosaki??" and he'd end up as part of her protection squad. no one can say shit to her when her guard hyena is around.

SPEAKING OF PARALLELS- SHU. I HAVE SUCH COMPLICATED FEELINGS ABOUT SHU ITSUKI BUT GODDAMN. DO HE AND ANZU PARALLEL EACH OTHER. let me list some things

both were considered odd by their peers and pursued more artistic outlets instead of social interactions (both ended up in fashion)

some gender shit- anzu has always been described as more tomboyish/less of a demure girl than others (hitting people when she's annoyed, more aggressive than passive, etc- in !! we don't see it much but i chalk it up to her trying to be more professional) shu's past with being a boy into fashion/dolls and having people not really support him follows this

suzu and mika respectively. i have certain feelings about the unhealthy aspects of shu and mika's relationship, but it certainly does parallel how suzu looked to anzu (even now.)

the mental toll it took on each of them when they were ridiculed (shu with his execution and anzu with being bullied so much she had to transfer) they both sunk their time into distracting themselves (shu with valkyrie and anzu with producing)

i could go on. shu x anzu isn't necessarily a ship i see, but i think if anzu were to tell shu her story, he'd be quite shocked at their similarities. shu could comfort anzu whenever she feels that built up guilt of leaving suzu, her one companion in such a cruel system. plus they're sewing buddies. beyond that, he'd listen to her complain about whatever is going on in the producer course and he'd subtly hype her up like "Tch. It seems as though they don't value insight from someone like you. I say, you are better off without them."

Rinne. HERE'S ME ABOUT TO EXPLODE. GOD. RINNE AMAGI. RINNEANZ FOREVER BABY. HE UNDERSTANDS THE PLIGHT OF NOT BEING TAKEN SERIOUSLY. HE UNDERSTANDS THAT OUTSIDERS LIKE THE TWO OF THEM DESREVE THE SAME LOVE AND RESPECT AS THOSE WHO KISS THE ASS OF WHATEVER SYSTEM THEYRE UNDER.

they both ran away from an old lifestyle and changed themselves drastically. rinne gained all his confidence and decided to be more loud and proud. anzu gained confidence as well, but is still learning to not doubt herself so much. But they have a common goal! uplift and support those who are overshadowed in the industry. Rinne with the bees and anzu with everyone else (including the bees as well) They both get each other though they have different approaches. rinne obviously respects anzu on a deep level and trusts her judgement. he's more discerning than he looks.

anzu probs wouldn't tell him anything. it probs would never come up. but if one day she comes to work after dropping off her brother somewhere, he can tell somethings off. he wouldn't pry, but he'd get it out of her. oh yeah also- younger brother issues. they both gottem. just. consider. consider the two of them confiding in each other. it's an odd sight seeing rinne look so calm talking to someone. he looks very handsome while he is serious though.

finally, madara. he'd honestly understand past her well purely bc he'd find the info. but he wouldn't say a thing. she wouldn't either. madara wants her to vent to him about the present goings on though. he wants to be a figure in her life. he LOVES her. enough to even put her at arms length so she wont get hurt. but sTILL. HE WANTS TO BE PRESENT. HE WANTS HER TO CONFIDE IN HIM. HE'S JUST NOT VERY GOOD IN SITUATIONS WHERE EMOTIONAL VULNERABLITY IS NEEDED.

god. she'd never open up to him about these things, but he'd subtly suggest things to maybe help her ease her mind. if she's wallowing in guilt over not being able to support suzu like she used to, he'd be like "oh im gonna go to a concert later. wanna come with?" and it'd be suzu's band playing. if she's having small disputes with some classmates causing delays in projects, somehow all the things that were missing from her classmate's end of the project are miraculously done. he'd also do things like be more huggy suddenly or give her rides to and from school so he can glare at whoever is giving her trouble. hell, he'd threaten mao to make sure she's treated like a princess in school. madaanz...

bonus: hitsugi and her shake hands in mutual understanding. anzu leaves every agency and becomes NEGI's sole producer. the two shake up the idol industry immeasurably, become a global sensation, and they live happily ever after.
