I had to physically restrain myself from drawing his nose any longer.

Also Leo is a menace, and no matter when happens, as a brother he is contractually obligated to make fun of Donnie. It’s just instinctual.

One of the biggest changes I see this season in Ed is how often he tears up. I never thought of him as an easy crier. S1 Ed is open and sweet — although we have Fang and Ivan and Izzy telling us he’s not shown it before; the Revenge and Stede “did something to his brain.”

But in s1 when he feels vulnerable he doesn’t cry. He gets quiet, curt or angry. He drinks or bluffs. The one exception is aftermath of the flashback which leaves him feeling so young. But we never see him in tears once before or after that, until he tries to just be Ed, and gets left.

And even then Ed doesn’t cry alone on the dock or rowing back to the ship or drinking in the room. It doesn’t start until Lucius asks him if he’s having a hard time. Then and there he cracks. I think it’s the strength of the love he feels, now that he’s let himself name it — and now that someone else is seeing it and calling it real, his pain and love. His heart. That breaks right through his shell. And he can’t undo that.

We see him teary again in s1 after Izzy demands Blackbeard and leaves him reeling. And he cries his heart out in the last shot. And then in s2 he cries all the damn time. He has tears in his eyes when he looks up to the moon after “Fuck you, Stede Bonnet”; he weeps over the cake toppers; he’s on the verge telling Frenchie about the never-resting seabirds. He tears up talking to the rabbit. He does it again when Stede tells him he loves his chin. He completely melts over the letter in the bottle. And he sobs when Izzy tells him he is loved, and not alone.

I wonder if little Ed was that tender. I wonder whether he could contain it around his dad; whether he shut it down, or went numb, or only lost it after he left home; or whether he couldn’t remember ever feeling that much, and it was being aboard the Revenge that gave him access to his depths for the first time, along with his happiness. I’m so very glad Ed got to feel everything, anyway. It saved him in the end.
