it’s always the side couple that make me go feral
is it because i prefer interesting characters who through their devastating flaws/trauma are still able to find someone to love? or does my lack of attention span just attach itself to the new shiny thing?

You decide to check out that kinn porsche show after spotting the gifs on your dash and four months later you’re knee deep in Gay Bangkok Bridge, Stairs of Death, lays and seaweed crisps product placement, architecture and engineering as the only two options in university, wet towel on head is the best medicine, rhapsodising over fan service, head pats and little hoop earrings in the left ear…

This post is an extension to this post about what can be classified as a BL. I'd rec you read that post first.
Tumblr media
I woke up in the morning with this in my notifs and I just....
Anyway, let's break it down:
Does a QL simple mean that the main characters are queer and you go in knowing that?
First of, in my post I say BL is where you know "Boys are kissing boys and girls are kissing girls." If there is no romance (thus the reference to kissing), the show becomes irrelevant to the conversation.
But to answer: What's wrong with that?
That makes literally *anything* centering queer people and queer love a QL
Great! It's QL.
I've seen this pointed out multiple times have these people wondered why they don't want to call something they think is good a QL? What is wrong with the title of QL?
and that imo is somewhat belittling of queer people's existence as in their presence in society as a a given is inherently 'genre'
Yeah, and Pride and Prejudice is a 'straight genre'
If that doesn't make sense, well, that sentence didn't make sense to me. Does making crime shows make the lives of cops and criminals in to a genre??? It's such an absurd statement. Or maybe I'm just sleepy....
this is very different from thinking QL is 'bad'--you'd never call anything with an expected straight romance in it 'romance' by default
Yeah! That's how it works! Romance is romance. Romance is a genre. It's literally the biggest genre there is. There is more romance written, published, made into animation or live action than literally any other genre by a huge margin.
Romance can and is often combined with other genres. Doesn't change that it is a romance.
you'd call it whatever genre it is; when you meet a series of fitting tropes you'd call it a rom-com
What does rom stand for again?
Romance is often used with other genres, from action to horror to contemporary to fantasy to sci-fi.
This I think primarily comes from people not knowing how genres work. It's not a Boolean (as one would say in computer science). It's not a True/False thing where if it's action it can't be romance. If it's romance it can't be political.
As they say: It contains multitides.
shouldn't queer stories be afforded the same discretion?
Moonlight Chicken, Kinnporsche, Old Fashion Cupcake, Bad Buddy, Love in the Air, Not Me, 180 Degrees, GAP the series, HIStory 3: Trapped, About Youth, Mood Indigo, Cherry Magic, I could go on. You don't have to go anywhere else for it. BL already has it all.
So I'll ask again: Why do you feel that 'BL' is a bad word?
Other people have wrote about this with better sources and much deeper understanding so I'll try my best to convey it here:
As I understand the situation, something got lost in translation when yaoi travelled from Japan to the US and people started understanding yaoi to be a 'dirty' genre, that did not depict honest queerness despite it being made up of majorly queer people. It became the genre that was 'for straight women by straight women'. If you look at US the same phenomenon can be observed when people talk, or at least talked, about slash fiction. Mix in some cultural context and yaoi goes from a fun escapist genre to the bane of queer existence genre. Fiction is enjoyed differently in different parts of the world. Nothing wrong with that. Hell, nothing unique or special with that statement either. It's a fact of life. If Shakespeare can't be universal, as many like to claim, we should not expect the same of anything else.
And let's never forget how westerners think their version of queerness is the only real version. I've had personal experience with this and I can say: People need to open their minds and understand that not everything is from their perspective. When I encounter any American thing in a show or book, I simply slide past it because I'm not American. I've never been to America. It doesn't change the story itself, so why bother, what would be the point. If people applied that approach instead of analyzing every detail and expecting it to fit your world view then we would all be happier.
(It turned sappy at the end there. I'm sleepy.)

Policing Sex and Shaming Folks for Liking LITA
Let's talk about all the girlies mad about sexy BLs finally getting some shine these days.
While BL's move toward including sexual themes in dramas was met with great fanfare, there's a growing backlash toward these productions brewing underneath the surface. Soft BL fans complain that BLs have gotten too raunchy and that all of the "top BLs" are all sex and no plot. These stans have taken to the forums and Twitter streets to shame hard fans as gross fetishizers and liken shows with heavy sexual themes to "softcore porn."
I want to address these concerns.
BL isn't being overrun with sex, it's just becoming more diverse.
People keep parroting the idea that BL is all about sex now and there's no plot/art/etc. to be found anymore (this, despite the fact that most BLs pre-2gether are a dumpster fire of cliches and unsatisfying romance). But if you really look, BL is as fluffy as it's always been. Many of the most talked-about BLs fall decidedly out of the sexy category and even explore topics like politics, wealth inequality, workers' rights, family, LGBTQ+ rights, self acceptance, social anxiety, and much more. More than that, a lot of these shows are devoid of any real sexuality. In the past 2 years, we've had: 1000 Stars, Bad Buddy, Cherry Blossoms After Winter, Fish Upon The Sky, ITSAY, My Gear & Your Gown, etc. that don't even feature actual sex scenes and yet deal with complex themes and plot points like those listed above. These are but a few popular examples of many.
2. Even if BL's are featuring sexual relationships, what's the real problem?
Look, I understand there are people who prefer not to have sex scenes in their content for a variety of reasons. But my problem is the idea that BLs shouldn't be sexual or that popular BLs shouldn't contain sex at all so as to appeal to this audience. This is frankly ridiculous. There are so many BLs that will give you what you want if you wish not to see sex scenes. But to try and shut out any sex is messed up for those who want to see different types of relationships on camera.
3. People who enjoy BLs with sex scenes aren't all evil.
Of course some are lmao but it's such a large community that to paint everyone with one stroke is disingenous. Someone enjoying LITA or KinnPorsche is not going to end the world. Indeed, romance as a genre has historically featured sex to ground stories and showcase the very real sexual situations present in most romantic relationships. Not seeing how it makes someone a bad person to want to see the things we get in het romances in BL/GL/etc. romances.

So I've seen a lot of debate on the subject of tagging shows or ships in posts that only exist to criticize. Where does everyone come down on this issue? I'm of two minds. I think if what you're trying to do is refute a message the show/movie/book/etc is sending that you find problematic in some way and want people to not buy into it, I thinking tagging it is reasonable. But when you're just criticizing something because you personally don't like it it feels a little murkier for me. So I'm wondering what everyone thinks. Should only people who enjoy whatever it is use the tags, and those who don't like it don't? Or should people use the tags regardless of their post being positive or negative?

Which BL Couple/relationship do you think wouldn’t last past their story?
When I’m talking about couple I’m referring to the characters NOT the actors by the way. I originally saw this question on BL Reddit (Hell, but funny) and absolutely loved the discussion. So I wanted to bring it here cuz I’m curious👀

Top 10 BLs, 2022 edition
I watched SO MANY shows in 2022. I probably watched more shows in 2022 than I watched in 2020 and 2021 combined. But also this was my first year watching BL shows. I did the Heartstopper to Young Royals to Bad Buddy pipeline and I loved Bad Buddy so much I started watching BL in all my spare moments. Anyway, here's my list:
youtube
Honorable mention to Secret Crush on You. Don't start with this if you're new to BL, maybe. It's a mess of a BL, but it has *THE* best friend group in all of BL, and Daisy's story is IN-fucking-CREDIBLE. I truly adored it.
10. My Ride. Incredibly sweet, incredibly tame, with an older gay couple as side characters. The story is just...adorable. Fluke P is just...adorable. (Bad kissing, be warned.) Still, loved it.
youtube
9. About Youth. This show needed 2 more episodes. Don't @ me. It did! Another incredibly tame, incredibly sweet show. The two main actors did a beautiful job. The love story is sweet as hell. Set in HS, if that's not your thing.
Tumblr media
8. Heartstopper. I'm....not sure this is a BL, in all honesty. But I adored it and it belongs on this list, so...shrug. The casting was brilliant, and it's just a solid little show. Looking forward to season 2. You can find it on Netflix.
7. Triage. Um, this never got international release but trust me when I say it's worth finding. The time loop plot device is brilliant. I'm sorry to say they didn't stick the landing, or this might have been higher on the list.
Tumblr media
6. Between Us. Because of the fact that this is airing in both 2022 and 2023 you might just see it on next year's list. If this show sticks the landing, it could be the best BL of the year, because it's so fucking modern in its take on BL. I love it.
Tumblr media
5. Love in the Air. One of the shows I've rewatched the most; the first half is a fluffy romance novel that hits its beats PERFECTLY. Second half is okay but it has one of the most impactful NC scenes I've ever watched in BL. When Pai and Sky sleep together in episode...10? That's the first time Pai has ever slept with someone he loves, presumably. And it's...I don't know, it hits in a way other scenes don't.
Tumblr media
4. Semantic Error. Technically, this is the first BL I ever watched and I was fairly meh on it. I rewatched it last month and I went nearly feral for it. Understanding BL helps with this one. It's masterful. It's beautifully done. Park Seoham is in it.
youtube
3. The Eclipse. Another HS BL. It's got its issues (episode 11 is...not good), but it's also REALLY fucking deep and really fucking sweet. Kan and Thua are one of my fave BL couples of the year. (RIP NeoLouis, sorry they're splitting you up, I liked you a lot.)
Tumblr media
2. KinnPorsche. Yup, if you spent any time with me over the summer you know the levels of obsession I reached with this show. It's unlike any other BL I've watched, still. Again, it's not perfect, but it's fucking GOOD is what it is.
youtube
Bad Buddy. You can't be surprised by this. I KNOW it mostly aired in 2021 but it DID air new in 2022 so it counts. How do I love this show? Let me count the ways. I don't know, pals. It grabbed me and wouldn't let go. I write BBS fanfic. Everything about this show works for me, including the stupid sound effects (they're awful, I get it) and the terrible wardrobe (Pran, THAT? You're wearing that?). There's a pretty high probability that I get a Bad Buddy tattoo in the next few years. (Nong Nao, if you're curious.) I can't make you watch Bad Buddy. I can only tell you that when I finished it the first time around, I immediately started it again. It was my 2nd BL, and since then, I've watched 40-something others. Bad Buddy still wins.

need a new bl show to watch but unsure of how spicy it is? someone made a spicy index list
🌶️ - Bell pepper - longing glances, maybe a caress and pinky touch, solid hugs, no kisses (Cherry Magic)
🌶️🌶️ - Jalapeño popper - 1 or 2 kisses, closed mouth or hidden behind camera angles, full of cheesy emotions but not sexual (Mr. Unlucky has No Choice but to Kiss)
🌶️🌶️🌶️ - Sriracha - at least 1 decent kiss, actual makeout with or without tongue, but clothes stay on (Bad Buddy, Semantic Error)
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ - Birds eye chili - multiple solid kisses and some clothes come off, but cuts away before any pants come off and hands generally stay above the waist, it's implied that they have sex but we only see the very start of the encounter (609 Bedtime Story, Between Us, Until We Meet Again)
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ - Specialty hot sauce - all or most clothes come off at least once, full on simulated sex happens though it can be masked with sultry background music and may or may not include an implication of climax (Ghost Host Ghost House, Cutie Pie, Long Time No See)
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ - Carolina reaper - full nudity at some point, though junk may be cleverly hid with angles and conveniently placed furniture, these boys fuckin and there ain't no ambiguity about it, sexy sounds at full volume rather than replaced by music or voiceover (Kinnporsche, Love in the Air)
🌶️☠️ - Pepper spray - there's full on sex and/or nudity but it's not pleasant or intended to be sexy, can apply to graphic SA scenes or just the marketing campaign for Dangerous Drugs Of Sex
(the show list isn't fully comprehensive yet but a great start)

I’ve heard pointed out that BLs are popular because the actors are attractive…. Isn’t that the case with any entertainment??? Hot people are more popular than not people…. What point is there to be made here? It’s the actor’s job to look attractive….

Some VERY interesting things are happening in the ql world over in Taiwan!! I could’ve sworn someone already made a post about this but I can’t find it now (I might’ve just been recalling when the HIStory account posted about it before though) and now I’m learning some very interesting news I hadn’t seen before so I’m making my own post about it. And also so fellow ql fans can hear abt this too.
So here’s the rundown. Last month there was an event titled “Be Love, Go Love” in which LINE TV & TAICCA announced they would be working on developing more BLs & GLs in Taiwan. They ALSO said they’d be working with people from other countries including the director & producer of semantic error and other important people from Thailand and Korea. Wayne Song was also at the event and said not only that he’d like to work with the director & producer of semantic error, but that he’d be willing to do so without pay/paying out of his own pocket just for a chance to act with her (I love this guy)!
Tumblr media
The way this event will work is people will register & submit a bl or gl story to LINE TV X TAICCA in order to develop it into future pitches that are expected to be completed by August 2024. Out of all the submissions they’ll select a total of SIX they’ll be working on developing. Obviously this is all really exciting because we’re not only getting six new qls but they’re going to be collaborating with other significant people in the industry.
Now idk about y’all but I loooove this incorporation of different countries considering they’re the primary ql producers (and maybe Japan too but that’s not one of the countries they’re working with). What I didn’t see before (although it’s literally been up on the page with all the info since they announced this in early November…) are some of the other people they plan on working with. Listed on their website where people can register for this series development plan are:
Tsai Mi Chieh (HIStory2: crossing the line, HIStory3: make our days count, about youth, etc.)
Pepzi Banchorn Vorasataree (bad buddy, dark blue kiss, kinnporsche, the warp effect, etc.)
Bee Pongsate Lucksameepong (2gether, a tale of thousand stars, bad buddy, kinnporsche, love mechanics, vice versa, my school president, last twilight, etc.)
Yuan Wan Thabkrajang (I feel you linger in the air, manner of death, my gear and your gown, etc.)
Hwang Da Seul (where your eyes linger, to my star, blueming, etc.)
And apparently this might not even be everyone???!! So the lineup is already really impressive. It seems like they’ll each have different roles (representatives of their country, consultants, etc.), but all be mentors in some form. I also got especially excited when I saw the HIStory Instagram account post a photo with Cheng Yi Xu who acted in fragrance of the first flower, a Taiwanese gl. What I wanna know is… are my HERstory dreams finally coming true???! PLEASE… regardless, I expect we’re gonna get some super awesome qls in the not-so-distant future from new filmmakers with influence from a hell of a translational mentors group.

Build-a-BL: Off the Market
Tumblr media
From Aof Noppharnach and Jojo Tichakorn, comes a new show.
Night (First Kanaphan) has been struggling financially for years now, having to pay off his late mother's debts. Until one day he hears about the opportunity of a lifetime. At the upcoming local night market, there is going to be a special exhibit, featuring many priceless artifacts for display. A new job opportunity puts Night right by the artifacts. If he can manage to just grab one of the items being displayed, selling it would give him more than money to pay off the remaining debt and set up a new and good life for himself. But stealing something with such tight security is not a task for one man.
Ace (Khaotung Thanawat) is a burnt out private eye who had long been disillusioned about what good he could do against all the corruption in the world. What's worse, his cases keep causing him to run into Mercy (Mix Sahaphap), a notorious jewel thief that gets in his way and under his skin. At first he wrote it off as an unlucky coincidence, but when Mercy kept showing up at all of his cases, even those that there was no real reason for Mercy to be involved, he had to concede that for some reason Mercy was pursuing him. Against his better judgment, Ace finds himself in bed with Mercy more than he'd care to admit.
When Ace hears about a night market hosting a series of valuable items for display, his private eye senses scream at him that there's something more to what's on display, which is how he meets Night. Inevitably Mercy also gets involved and soon the trio find themselves tangled together as they begin to unravel something far bigger and sinister than they imagine.
Meanwhile, Night's estranged step-sister Dawn (Milk Pansa) is a rookie detective. When she hears about suspicious activity surrounding a night market, she goes to investigate, but is surprised that none of her superiors seem to have any interest in the matter. Things get more complicated when she keeps hearing the name Viper (Bible Wichapas), a respected businessman that all her colleagues seem to respect, tied to what's happening at the night market. What's more, she recently met the mysterious Ruby (Silvy Pavida), who seems to know more than she lets on, but Dawn finds herself inexplicably drawn to her.
Things only escalate by the sudden involvement of Prince (Jeff Satur) a master thief and Mercy's long time rival. Except Prince doesn't seem to be at the night market to steal and his apparent connection with Viper causes more confusion.
Will Night, Ace, and Mercy be able to work together to accomplish their goals? Will the tangled web of corruption be revealed? What are they willing to sacrifice to create the future they want for themselves?
(Full list of details under cut. Also this is 100% a collaborative effort and is about as public domain as a concept for a fictional show can be. If there is anything you want to add or make, please do! Tag me too because I want to see lol)

Which BL Couple do you want to see in a Sequel?
And not just a cameo or an Our Skyy 2-episode arc.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
HIStory 3: Trapped (2019, above) - I want to keep seeing how their relationship works as their morals clash.
Bad Buddy (2021) - I know we risk ruining a good thing and that we got the Our Skyy episodes, but I could watch more of these two as they learn to nurture their relationship in spite of the negativity surrounding them.
Not Me (2021) - There is SO much that can be done in this universe with these twin rebel characters. They should absolutely revive it as LGBTQIA legislation and police corruption evolves in Thailand.
Tumblr media
Love is Science? (2021, above) - I could watch 12 whole episodes of Ou Wen learning to trust playboy bi Mark.
Semantic Error (2022, top) - Park Seoham returns from military service later this year, but IDK. I feel like there's not much else to explore here. Loved every minute of it though.
KinnPorsche (2022) - This is another couple that I feel ran its course. I would sooner watch a spinoff of Kim and Chay, even though I think Jeff Satur is more interested in music these days, because I need to know if Kim loved Chay or if he just pitied him. Plus, Kim is next-gen mob boss and I'd love to see it. And while I did enjoy Pete & Vegas, it appears we are still up in the air about whether the actor who played Pete...is a piece of sh*t. What a plot twist?
Love in the Air (2022) - Both couples contributed some of the best sex scenes to BL history, but I doubt there's more story to tell.
The Eighth Sense (2023) - They fucked me all the way up. 😭 Made To My Star 2 seem like a cake walk. I need a sequel just to know where this is going.

Question for BL watchers
When you look at someone’s “top ten BL” lists or their recommendations, what show on that lists tells you wether or not you should indulge in their recommendations.
For example, for me if I see ******** *** ****** (hidden for my safety LMFAOO) in someone’s top ten I scroll past the post or leave the video. Plot and acting wise this BL is in between “meh” and bad in my opinion. Maybe I could watch it to use as background noise or maybe as a half-way comfort show but not much else. But I immediately question everything else on the post if I see this BL on the list.
Keep in mind we all have different opinions and criticisms. But I’m just interested in seeing other peoples thoughts cuz I recently watched a video where people were rating BLs. I found it interesting.
