But if you ask someone if they like Lestat as a character you'd mostly get positive responses. He is so much fun to read and watch. And this happens only a few times in fandom where people love a character but also they want to put a ocean between them and the character. Like with House, if you were desperate you won't mind him as a doctor, he can call you names all he wants, at least at the end of the day he will fix you. But no one is delulu enough to get with him in any way. They are fun to watch on screen. And that's it.

What about thee meow meow blorbo of whump - Malcolm Bright. I feel like Prodigal Son didn't get the attention it deserved. Fox made a huge mistake cancelling it. His whump magnet is so strong even the actual show writers couldn't stop doing it. Hardly an episode passed without some act of emotional or physical violence. He's pretty, sad, daddy issues, lacks social skills, and throws himself into danger. What else could you want?

Put it away.

Like recently I started working on WIP: The Heirs. It was basically a whumptober project inspired by Legacies (this show lives rent free in my head because it had wonderful characters and horrendous executions).

So while I was working for whumptober, it didn't make sense. In fact I ended up not doing whumptober altogether.

I was stuck on this story though because all the eight characters were living a different genre (kinda like in kinnporsche) and I wanted that for myself.

But around last month, I picked the themes, gave the characters new characteristics, added tension to the friend group and voila, the story actually makes sense and the characters are nothing like those on Legacies. (I would like to thank The Vampire Diaries and Damon Salvatore in particular for making me add problem characters to the friend group.)

So to conclude: Put it away from a while. Then when you are ready to go back: Start at the themes and the characters. The plot will fall into place by itself.

To answer your question: Research.

One of the projects I'm working on is a Wuxia type story set in India (I don't think there is a specific term for this. I suppose fantasy is a thing. But given the Indian fantasy novels I've read, this really isn't it. It does fit more into the Wuxia concept than Western Fantasy concept.)

Anyway, in my experience whether it's a Western Fantasy or Chinese Fantasy, the information is really widely available. Either in the form of other shows or just youtube videos. Not to say there are no channels about Indian history but it's mostly just about the kings and wars and shit. I have watched hundred of videos and I'm yet to find anything that talks about the common people or the business people, day in their life style. [My protagonists being 1) a brother and sister from a merchant family and 2) a pair of brothers from a minor noble family (in english terms they would be a lord level person)]

So far, I'm like fuck it we ball but without a reference point to work from it's really messy.

One thing I did fit into place recently is this: I have a characters who is inspired by Karna from Mahabharat and I was reading about the Indian Independence Movement. So I combined those two elements. Karna - the man born with abilities to rival the ruling class and Bhagat Singh's backstory. (I didn't want 'Karna' to be 'able' because he is actually from the right class/caste or people. I wanted him to be angry at the existence of this discrimination.)

Honestly it's just hard to guess which parts I'm wrong about given how complex and at time contradictory the myths are. I view Karna as misunderstood, the text views him as a traitor but other texts view him as something else. It's just exhausting because at the end of the day you will piss someone off. I can guarantee you that much.
