Umm, don't look at that too closely. Anyway! Today I have compiled some of my favourite queer Alias fics, for your reading pleasure! In no particular order:
Thinking of You is a Poison I Drink Often by Best_Bi_666
Now I know I never shut up about this, but it is genuinely my favourite Anna/Sydney fic I've read! The dialogue is amazing, we've got a little bit of a mystery going on, and the girls are just in excellent form. It's rated Teen and is ongoing.
(The Meaning Of) Restoration by Jennifer-Oksana
Is it cheating to put a crossover on this list? I'd argue not, especially when it's as good as this one. The pairing is Lauren/Lilah from Angel, and while there's some very neat insights into BOTH characters, I don't think you have to be particularly familiar with Angel to enjoy it. It's rated Explicit.

There's never enough Rachel in the world, there's never enough Isabelle, and this story is doing it's darndest to make up for the lack. Isabelle finds out a secret from Sydney's past, and goes to seek out an old friend. An extremely interesting story. Rated Teen with an archive warning for Underage, so proceed at your own discretion.

What can I say, I love me some Anna/Sydney! This is a short, fun little meeting between the two while Anna's on a mission. Rated Teen.

Sydney starts having dreams about her missing years, dreams that Lauren is suspiciously involved, and she's determined to get to the bottom of it. Julia/Lauren is always a delight to see, and this certainly delivers well! Rated NC-17.
Gentlemen Prefer Blonds by auchic
Weiss has to start babysitting Sark, and absolutely nothing about this could possibly go wrong. A Syd/Weiss/Sark story that leans into the silliness a bit. All in all, just a fun read! Rated Explicit.

I love stories where it’s someone close to the main character who ends up being their villain, sadly: a friend, parent, sibling, or lover. It just brings so much more to the story and makes you care.
Final Fantasy X had the parent thing with Tidus and Jecht, as did Alias with Sydney and Irina, which is probably part of the reason I love both so much. Alias was also setting up a sibling betrayal with Sydney and Nadia (sisters) because of a prophecy though I’m actually glad it never got there. Or I hope that Sydney and Nadia could have risen above that destiny, like they wanted to.
Dark Angel was starting to do a “sibling” enemies thing with Max and Ames. Edit: And in the first season, her enemy, Lydecker, was essentially her father (and she saw him that way, even though she didn’t want to), so we also had tension there.
And Buffy the Vampire Slayer after season one... did most of these things, which is why it’s so amazing and so renowned. And why you really feel for Buffy and her battles, and they actually mean something.
I feel like there are quite a few examples of the friend thing. Clark and Lex in Smallville start out friends and become enemies. And then in Death Note, Light and L start off enemies and stay that way... but as they work together, the audience (and they, to an extent) get this sense that if they weren’t so stuck to their ideals, and if things had been different, they would have been friends, and it’s sad. And there are plenty other friend ones, of course (like a lot that I’m surely forgetting). The most famous probably being Caesar and Brutus, Jesus and Judas, etc. Edit: Shanna, how could you forget your favorite fandom of all? Kingdom Hearts with Sora and Riku in the first game, of course! And Neku and Joshua in the The World Ends With You.
#also this is fanfiction on my part. but... in tru calling tru's dad is one of her enemies and they have conflicting ideals#that part's not fanfiction exactly and fits into all of this. and he wants harrison (his son) to inherit his powers and ideas and to fight#against tru (something else that fits into all of the above)#but harrison would never. but they also have a sister who disappeared in s1. if the show had continued. and i were writing it. i would have#brought her back. had her learn the secret and have her agree with their dad and become tru's enemy so we get some of this sadly#because i could see Meredith more so going along with it than harrison#but we wouldn't make her completely dark or cartoon-y or something#we would show how she still really does love tru and harrison. and how there are moments where she's torn up about this#and maybe even have it look like she's thinking about going along with them at times. but she doesn't in the end unfortunately#also for the friendship thing lelouch and suzaku from code geass

3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?
Farscape!!!!! Which is interesting because I discovered it after it finished airing (maybe a year or so after Peacekeeper Wars), and I was never heavily involved, and didn’t write much for it. But it just had the absolute best fandom ethos I’ve ever experienced. Farscape was for so many people a really, really special show. There were a number of people who had loved other things and been in other fandoms and thought they knew what this whole fannish love thing was all about and then we found Farscape and it was like, NO BUT THIS THING OMG. I’ve never loved another show like that, and I think that feeling was unusually prevalent in the fandom. Back in the day on LJ, when a new person would discover Farscape and post about it, there would be this whole “puppy pile” full of people who would show up in your comments delighted to find a new fan. And not just, hey, welcome to our fandom--though it was that, and that’s lovely and rare enough--but also this sense of kinship that felt somehow unique to Farscape. Like if someone really knew how to love this show, they must be our kind of people, and not just superficially.
It was also the fandom where I really learned what fic can do. I’d read great fic in X-Files and in SG-1 before that, but my focus had always been really heavily on the ship and I wasn’t thinking as much about fic in a more meta way as a transformative medium. That was all Farscape. Part of the reason I didn’t write much in that fandom was that I didn’t need to. Between the show itself and the amazing work of the other fans, I didn’t need anything else.
9. What are the best things about your current fandom?
Oh, this is kind of a sad question because I feel like the best things about my current fandom...aren’t so much the way things are anymore. But when I discovered The Worst Witch, maybe two years or so ago now(?!?), it reminded me, more than anything I’ve seen lately (i.e., in the past 8-10 years) of old-school transformative fandom. It’s a kids’ show. It’s kind of terrible, even at its best, and really terrible at its worst. One half of one of the biggest ships in the fandom had maybe 30 minutes of combined screen time in two episodes. And it was like fandom looked at this, cracked its knuckles, and said, let’s see what we can do with this!!! And what it did with it was so wonderful. Lots of fic, lots of fanon that filled out alllllllllll the gaps, a really quite sophisticated and adult perspective on these characters who were not really created that way in canon. I haven’t had that much fun in fandom since before BSG went off the rails, so like...2008.
And then last year the show retconned something horrible for Hecate’s backstory, and I think a lot of us were just...done. And some of it was because of that, and some of it, I think, was a few of the major players in the fandom moving in other directions for various reasons, so the hicsqueak side of the house, in particular, has been much quieter. There are still some great stories popping up from time to time (and my faaaaaaaaaaaaavorite wip by @nike-sga), but it’s lost the energy it once had, and that makes me sad. At the same time, well, that’s how fandom goes. Everything runs its course, and I suppose that, too, feels kind of nostalgically old-school.
31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?
I don’t know???? But let’s take ever off the table, and the one that’s delighted me most lately was probably @nike-sga‘s comment on Times the Walk From You (this is the let’s tag Nike post, isn’t it!). The money quote: Anyway, you are the worst and this is beautiful, and I can’t even look at you right now. Fantastic work, as always. I mean, that’s basically what a girl always wants from a comment, right?
45. What is your all time favourite fanfic?
Oh god. Like...one? That’s an impossible question. I’m going to go with the first thing on my shortlist that popped into my head. Another day the answer would almost surely be different. But it is true that I have loved this fic passionately for many years: No for Yes by Yahtzee. Alias, Jack/Irina, rated M. Simultaneously the story of how they met and married and the story of how they reconciled during Sydney’s lost years. It hits basically all of my fic buttons, does excellent things with point of view and with gaps, and is just really, really well done.

Additional Notes:
This may be the episode where the show’s “X hours earlier” device really stops working. There’s really no point to it beyond setting up a completely unnecessary fake-out.
How does “make sure there’s no evidence we’re here” mean “blow up the building along with everyone inside?”
Sloane and SpyMommy is both everything I wanted and not nearly enough. This is the problem with writing that is focused on keeping stuff from the audience: it means you miss opportunities for really interesting conversations and dynamics.
Similarly, I wish we could get more of SpyMommy and Sark, given everything that has been suggested about them. Having him defibrillate her is just not enough.
Speaking of Sark, I wonder if that smile he makes before killing Brucker—which I had not noticed until a friend mentioned it—was there in the script / direction or was a decision by David Anders.
Even though he’s appeared in most episodes this season, I can’t say I’ve quite got a handle of Kendall’s character beyond “abrasive,” but boy, I love him.
This episode tends to be well-liked, but like season two in general, it leaves me cold. One would think that SpyMommy and Sloane joining forces would result in some sort of escalation, but the action this episode feels like a retread of what we saw in “A Free Agent” and “Firebomb.” What escalation we do see—Irina and Sark blowing up a building full of people—goes on largely unremarked. So we get an episode of muted actions and muted reactions, and it should be so much more.
