Hi, you're a very admirable artist, I was doing some art and I was wondering if you could help. Do you have any tips for making people look Grungy? I need to draw a person who has like, real awfully maintained greasy hair for a story about a miserable detective and you're very good at drawing hair, so, i figured I'd see if you had any tips.
I'm sorry if this is like, imposing on you or anything.

so, a lot of this is massively going to depend on how you stylize hair in your own art style; but i've tried to collect some observations about how clean and dirty hair behave differently that i hope can help broadly.
some other notes:
- light colored hair may seem darker when dirty; dark or black hair might have more dramatic shine.
- greasy hair can clump together to the point where the scalp is more visible between the sections; depending on your art style this might be something pretty cool to render. this also happens even to very short hair! (my sides are shaved, but if it's been a while since a trim, i know i definitely need a shower when the "fluff" on the sides starts making little points).
- the traits of greasy hair will be most prominent where grease/oils will collect: at the top/crown of the head, with bangs/fringe that touch the forehead frequently, around the ears, etc.
- in addition to being dependent on your art style/how you specifically stylize hair, depicting stuff like this will also be relative between characters. you're going to want to make sure the character looks greasy Compared To Other Characters. like, check this out:
here's a character i drew out really fast using a bunch of the same cues i listed in the top example: the hair is limp, it clings to itself and to the head and is kind of stringy, shiny around the top, etc. but in isolation, based on how this character is styled and posed (and also because they are not placed next to a different version of themself labeled "CLEAN HAIR"), they probably wouldn't be immediately read as unkempt!
especially in comic/narrative/story-based work, any time you want small details about a character's appearance to be noteworthy and to communicate something specific about them, you have to make sure those details are reinforced/contrasted by what's going on around them. you can draw your detective greasy and miserable and unkempt, but it's not going to have as much impact if all the other characters are drawn mostly the same way; they gotta look greasiER and MORE miserable and MORE unkempt than the average character for that to really land. (this is why my first instinct in showing how greasy hair might look was to contrast it with how clean hair can be drawn instead!)

drew stans weezer unironically. he has a reddit account solely for debating whether the blue album or pinkerton is better. i stand by this
in my timeline of events for my fics, zoey's done contests before DP. her first circuit was actually in johto, because she wanted to challenge herself by going somewhere entirely new. that's where she got misdreavus from! daisy oak was her mentor figure, and she also competed alongside marina and became good friends with them both
another zoey hc - i think it would be really funny if her type was extroverted blue-haired coordinators. dawn, obviously but also marina and lisia
ash has synesthesia. and perfect pitch, even though he's never played an instrument. cilan is jealous and outraged at the latter
gary had a poetry/journaling phase when he was around 15 in sinnoh. he was inspired by his grandpa's poetry and proverbs he heard around the region like "when every life meets another, something will be born." so he kept a journal of original poems for a bit, but he abandoned it after a year or so, and nowadays he cringes at his cliches when he looks back. there's probably a few poems unraveling his feelings for ash in there
goh does 80% of his shopping at uniqlo. look at him and tell me he doesn't
chloe pushed herself to be social when she was young, especially because she saw how goh got treated for being antisocial, but as she grows up she comes to realize that she has a lower social battery than she would like. if she has two (2) packed social days in a row she will lose her mind
serena and chloe were obsessed with cimorelli's youtube covers when they were in their early teens. they grow out of it but it comes up as a big "wait, what? you actually know what i'm talking about?" moment when they become friends in their 20s
social media hcs: misty was a myspace girlie, gary knows that twitter is now (regrettably) X but he draws the line at knowing what tiktok is, dawn and may thrived during the vine era but only dawn actively uses tiktok, serena was all about that 2014 instagram christian girl autumn aesthetic, lana streams on twitch, brock was the first of his friends to join facebook and that's where he peaked, iris only created her social media accounts once she became unova champion, zoey's accounts are managed by a PR specialist so that she can just relax and play words with friends, ash plays among us but forgets his actual SM accounts exist, and paul is ride or die with his nokia flip phone
ash is the shortest among shigesatogou, but he can still sling both goh and gary over his shoulder no problem (we stan a short athletic king)

Given the chance to live your life on Mars, with no hope of returning to Earth but with the promise of scientific discovery and glory, would you take it?
Not if it means going alone. I can handle loneliness when I know there's an eventual out and the possibility of just walking to someone, ignoring borders. If I was separated from all of humanity by the cold and unwalkable void of space, I'd kill myself within months.
If I could take at least a person or two with me, and wasn't as fucked up as I am right now, maybe. Other than that though, glory isn't enough of a legacy to make me give up any chance at actually enjoying the remainder of my existence.

Replaced Au? Not really.... Final Part
That night, Eva disappear. The only one that knows what happened to her is only a few students.
Mc cure has been healed and now they try to heal after that terrible illness while also learning about magic.
No one talks about Eva and Mc is too busy trying magic and getting fascinated by their power. The boys watched in the background with a fond smile.
"You know... I never see Eva again. Where did she go?" Mc, asks suddenly. The first-year group stay silent before they look at Mc in confusion.
"Eva? Who is that?"
"Eh? you know that another magicless student beside me? You guys are the ones that introduced her to me." Mc explains while looking equally confused.
Deuce smiled awkwardly, "Um... We never accepted any new student."
"Yep. Besides, who wants to transfer in the middle of the semester?" ask Epel.
Ace smirk at Mc, "perhaps that long sleep really messed with your memory, Mc~. Did you need to go back to sleep to retrieve the memory?"
Mc pout before huffing, "...maybe. Ah! Just forget it."
"I once heard that anyone tends to confuse reality and dreams after a long illness. Maybe we should get you checked with Malleus or Lilia just to make sure." said Jack.
Mc then agree and followed them to get checked with Malleus. After that, they try to ask others and the answer they got is the same as their first-year group. So they decide to drop it and just accept that they just dreaming about that Eva person.

A mysterious girl starts to wander around aimlessly in some town. When she got evacuated and get questioned, she can't even remember anything. And the only thing, she mumbles is the loss of heart. The investigation team tried to discover anything about the girl but there not a single piece of data appeared. No one knows her identity and her case created so much conspiracy.
The close piece of information they can closely match is the lost girl file that come 100 years ago. While their characteristics match each other, there is no way the lost girl can survive that long without aging. And so, the case is deemed as Unsolved Case.
The girl then gets put in so kind of mental institution for further investigation and observation while the police try everything they could to figure out her identity and what happen to her.
The end.

Okay. This series has finally finished. It's short, I know. But I didn't want to make a long fiction about this one or I can easily lose interest 😅.
I like to say that the 'rest of the story can be imagined later.' You guys can send a brain rot about this chapter and I can answer them while enjoying my holiday trip. Just don't expect me to answer it every day.

wait… so obvs seth is jesus, so are the other characters’ positions inspired by the 12 apostles in the og painting by da vinci? i’m guessing it’s his rendition, mostly based on the hand gestures and facial expression from seth and kurosaki and yotatsuya’s poses mimicking john and peter in the painting (there’s no judas parallel in the sketch which is really interesting;;), however the other two don’t seem to resemble any of the right side of the painting so maybe i’m wrong? nyway - does it mean anything? or am i overthinking it (<- probably this one tbh ldjd)

lmao Connie would rather give Val $100 than use a pick up line. I think they'd go for the more subtle approach of making themself needed. a long con(nie). it's not even active flirting it's being helpful and protective until one day you realize actually you can't live without them. does it work? idk you tell me

val: normally they're overt, playful, and bold with flirting- making little comments and invading personal space. but Io's a different matter entirely that makes everything wildly complicated and tbh its probably better to just see it in game 🤷
kat: I'm torn between whether she'd be completely blunt about it or draw it out in the most cryptic way possible. so probably a demented combination of both. her hard-to-get game is impeccable, especially when she keeps openly complimenting Io. God this is just klaus again isn't it

Do you have any cites for your statement in the "war crimes" post, about the IRA being an unusual case where the more moderate faction was able to dominate and cut out the more ruthless factions? Not doubting you, I'd just like to know more about it and how this happened to buck the trend.
Not without digging much deeper into the IRA than than I have in the past.
It's worth noting that during The Troubles (the conflict in Northern Ireland), even the moderate paramilitary elements on both sides were pretty brutal. That said, I think this might be as simple as the IRA was able to negotiate a resolution to the conflict.
Ireland regained its independence from the UK in 1922, however six of the nation's thirty-two counties chose to remain in the UK at that time. The status quo deteriorated in the late-'60s, with sectarian violence following. Again, there's more to unpack here than I can do justice to in a quick overview. For one thing, the IRA did have continuity from the IRA of the Irish War of Independence (1919-21.)
This leads to some interesting anomalies regarding the IRA. For one thing, they had a relatively achievable goal. They wanted the return of self-rule to those six counties in Northern Ireland. This wasn't a situation where they were trying to overthrow their entire country, most of the time. (At various points in time the IRA did have a goal of overthrowing the Irish government as well, and unifying all 32 counties under a single rule. But, there was a lot less movement in that direction.)
Another factor that's almost unique, was the negotiated resolution. You basically never see that in situations like this because the insurgent elements almost always have a goal of eliminating the existing government. However, the IRA wasn't trying to overthrow the UK (even if they did launch a mortar attack on 10 Downing St. in 1991.)
Ironically, an extremist branch of the IRA (referred to as the “Real IRA”) staged a particularly bloody bombing while the Good Friday/Belfast Accords were being negotiated in 1998. This is something I warned about derailing negotiations like this, however, in this case the Real IRA apologized for the bombing, claiming that it was not intended to kill civilians. (When the Real IRA sent their bomb threats, there was a miscommunication about where it had been placed, and caused the police to evacuate civilians towards the bomb.) The Real IRA proceeded join the ceasefire that they'd previously ignored.
This highlights a weird anomaly, in this specific case even the extremists had a “unity of purpose,” and I can't say exactly why.
So, in a lot of cases where you're dealing with rebel groups, they have a unified goal of overthrowing their oppressors and ruling their nation. However, it is much easier to say you want to rule a nation than it is to actually organize a government to do so. Especially when there are ideological differences within your organization. In the the case of the IRA, there was a legitimate government already in place with the capacity to take over those counties. And even the negotiated result saw the return of existing political parties.
So, without spending a lot of time digging deeper into this, and looking at all of the IRA's schism groups and what became of them, the short citation would be that the Good Friday/Belfast Accord happened. That Northern Ireland exists today in a state of, relative, peace. That's not how these stories tend to end.

You told him that you put aside some money for him to go to a build-a-bear on the weekend and get some ice cream, and wow was he excited
Lance was also having a bout of cabin fever for the past few days, and he would not object to a little outing with his paramour and his surrogate child
When the day came Christoph was practically skipping to the Build-A-Bear
You told him he can choose whatever design he likes so he went for a bunny design
The sheer joy in Christoph's eyes nearly made you forget all the things he went through
Growing up as fast as he did cannot have been easy, so seeing him just being a kid just fills you with immeasurable joy. It's enough to make you tear up a little
A quick glance in Lance's direction told you he seemed to be thinking the same thing
Lance cannot thank you enough for making the time to do this
Once Christoph had his plushie finished, he came back to you, looking quite pleased with the result. So you go to the nearest ice cream shop afterwards
There were too many flavours to choose from, so Chris asks for your opinion
You choose one you think he'd like and instantly falls in love
You and Lance each chose your flavours and sat down at a table
As you watched Chris happily eat his ice cream and talked with him and Lance, you thought to yourself how wonderful life could be

hi idk if this is a weird question but like. how do u Make Art with adhd? you mentioned in your comic that you struggled w various other creative hobbies, but like drawing feels to me always like the Big Bad Thing I Cannot Ever do. even tho i want to make it my career LOL
how'd you get past that?
not a weird question at all! this is actually a question i ask myself pretty much every day, bc generally my answer to "how do i make art with adhd" has always been: With Great Difficulty, lmfao.
it's hard! i am not always good at it! i made art my job bc i realistically couldn't imagine being truly happy with anything else; if that wasn't the case, i'm not sure i would be doing this. like, that ends up being a big divide between the hobbies mentioned in that comic vs art, which is something that it seems (according to viewing my online activity) i do "Consistently;" it is my career, so there's a level of like, urgency and necessity there that my hobbies don't have. which, like, obviously my advice is not "make it your job so that you HAVE to OR ELSE :)" because it doesn't work like that. i am spending an amount of time OR-ELSE-ing that i think might surprise ppl, and i am frankly very lucky that my wife is the primary provider for our family, because it gives me a safety net for when my brain makes a loud grinding noise and then belches a big cloud of smoke and i have to spend a week hitting it with a wrench.
ANYWAY. this is going to get long bc i have a lot of thoughts abt it. there's really no one answer to getting past it, and i am not "past it," i don't know if i think anyone ever can be! we can just try really hard to keep going in ways that won't burn us out. if i had to pull out the absolute #1 most important thing i've learned over the past few years, it is -- and i know this sounds like dumb corny bullshit but you really have to stay with me here -- being kind and patient with yourself.
i'm being so dead serious. if beating yourself up and freaking out and constantly agonizing over how much more you Could be drawing worked, you would be drawing right now. if beating ourselves up over our output worked, EVERYONE would be drawing ALL the time. it doesn't fucking work! it does not! do literally anything other than yelling at yourself. it's bullshit. it's fuckery. it does not work.
on the other hand, cultivating as much kindness and patience and compassion as i can muster -- saying, "well, it looks like i just don't have it today. that's okay, let's try again tomorrow," even if i'm saying it through clenched teeth and i don't really believe it -- THAT works, because it chips away at the idea of drawing being life or death. it's probably a very similar feeling to you describing art as The Big Bad Thing. of course if you hang all your self worth on it and let it become immense and dominating, it's going to be hard to interact with it! it's scary! it becomes easier to avoid it than to try to tackle it and then feel disappointed in yourself in a more active way (vs. just disappointed in yet another day where u didn't try). but every time i sigh and say "okay" when my brain is screaming and crying bc art just is not working, and i decide to rest and try again tomorrow, 1. it is easier to do a little bit of work the next day when i'm rested than it is to do ANY work when i chain myself to my desk for 9 hours and demand results, and 2. i learn that it is not the end of the world. it just isn't. and so art gets smaller, and less frightening, and it can just be my job (something i have to wrangle my adhd around just like anything else, like grocery shopping and keeping the house clean and keeping up with my friends) instead of some huge destructive boss battle with my identity hanging in the balance.
sometimes you have to talk to yourself like a little kid. if a little kid came to you upset and was like "i wanna draw but i just can't. i don't know why." you would (hopefully) not be like, "whatever, i guess you're just not cut out for it then!" or whatever other mean shit we say to ourselves when we can't draw. you would be like, "well, okay. do you want me to sit with you? how do we start? where's some stuff we can draw with? hm, i can't really think of what to draw either. did you see anything pretty or cool today? let's just draw some shapes." etc etc. and if the kid got frustrated and it still wasn't working you'd be like, you know what, that was a good try. let's have some lunch and try again later. and you deserve that same level of patience, and that level of CURIOUS problem-solving ("what can we try? what might be easier?") instead of, like, adversarial/blame-assigning problem solving ("what the fuck is the matter with you? why can't you just do it?")
also, shaking things up!! one of the most frustrating things abt adhd for me is i'll find a new strategy that Works, but it only works for like, two weeks or whatever, and then it stops working and i have to do something else. i have had a way better time just accepting that that's how things work vs thinking of these cycles as "failures."
if i start dreading working at my desk, i throw a block of printer paper onto a clip board and work on the couch for a few weeks. when that stops working, i get back on drawpile and do all my warmup sketches on an interactive canvas, with strangers around me (virtual coffeeshop lol?). when i get tired of that, then maybe i'm ready to be alone with clip studio again. nope, still not working? okay, let's stream while i'm working for a while then. let's start drawing differently. let's change the background color i draw on. just, like, i keep shaking things up to see if maybe i can trick my brain into feeling like we're doing something totally new for a while, and a lot of the times it works, and when it does not work i am not an asshole to myself, which is, as i keep reiterating, super vital.
when i make the most art is when i get super excited about something and i let myself go apeshit. (there's a reason my guild wars 2 stuff is corralled on a sideblog lmao.) when commissions start grinding to a halt for me, a lot of times it's bc i've let them become Tasks on a to-do list instead of remembering that each piece is a DRAWING; it can help for me to sit down and go through each piece in my queue and really look at it, and remind myself that these are DRAWINGS and i LOVE drawing, and to point out to myself stuff in the wip that i like, and stuff i'm excited to draw the next time i work on it. it's very easy to flatten stuff into just An Obligation if you stress too much about it, but it's very helpful to slow down and step back and remind yourself WHY you care that much. it's not just bc you have to.
i don't really want this to get much longer than it already is, especially when i don't really have concrete tips so much as rambling opinions and examples of stuff that Kind Of works for me Sometimes. i think the tldr is: relax, be nice, keep it fresh. i hope at least some of this is helpful!

LETS GOOOO! [for the ship ask game]
What made you ship it?
@deamsgirl's fics! I can't remember if I found them before or after I found the wedding photo (which I still can't believe was greenlit), but either way, I fell in love with their collective snarky, attached-at-the-hip dynamic. I'm also fuzzy on when I watched Gary's JN episodes, but his first one (JN068) is peak "So did I just meet your ex?" energy. I was sold.
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
They are so fucking ridiculous (/affectionate). Usually how it goes is -- two of them are on their bullshit, and one of them either tries (and fails) to reign them in, or just encourages their shenanigans from the sidelines. You can put them in so many situations where they just fumble the same collective brain cell. It never gets old. They also just have some really cool overlap. Ash and Gary are childhood friends, Ash and Goh are current best friends and research fellows (JN never ended. to me), and Goh and Gary work on Project Mew together. So many ways for their stories to intersect and for their personalities to play off of each other
Also, their canon interactions have such gay energy, it's amazing. I'll name just a few. Going back to JN068 -- the Palletshipping moments (the hand squeeze), and the framing of Goh being in the back, feeling threatened by how close Ash and Gary are. The way that Goh already places so much stock in what Gary says. The way that Gary immediately chooses to rag on Goh with his "I'm not interested in your personality" and "I need to make sure you're qualified to be Ash's buddy" despite being completely normal to Dawn back in DP. Yeah, Ga(r)y, I see you.
JN102. AKA, the Project Mew episode where Goh seethes at the idea of working together with Gary (though, tbf, Gary revels in making his existence as irritating as possible to Goh). But then they have a heartfelt talk underneath the sunset, and they get all "bro... bro :0" over saying each other's names. (I'm not kidding, that happens). And meanwhile Ash keeps tagging along to all these missions even though he's not in Project Mew. He's just there to either go :) and support Goh, to roll his eyes at Gary and Goh bickering, or to defend Gary from even the slightest hint of haterism.
And that's not even to mention JN113, where Goh finally tells Ash "listen I appreciate you but like. you're not in Project Mew. i should do this on my own. shouldn't you be training?" Where Goh and Gary dramatically lock eyes with each otherwhile battling legendary Pokemon and learn that -- damn -- they do care and admire each other. (I'm just rambling now sdhjkgls)
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
This took some thinking, and idek how unpopular these are, but... Ash is the shortest of the three, but he can easily sling them both over his shoulder. Oh, and for fics where the characters actually age, I hc that Goh is the same age the other two, but he just started his journey later because he was so determined to make Mew his starter. (But that's a hc I can compromise on. Making pokeani's timeline make sense with ours is a struggle and a half, lmao.)

Sun Venus Saturn Uranus
Sun - Ah now we get to the hard ones, I see. I'm patient, I have good control of my emotions most of the time, I'm loyal sometimes to a fault (though not without lines), I'm tall, and... I have very nice calves. Bit weak toward the end but we got there.
Venus - Passionate, caring, intelligent, witty. I like someone with a strong personality, a protective streak, and who isn't afraid to be passionately weird and show it. I also have some preferences that lean toward shorter and more homicidal women. What can I say, even with a sub, there being at least some possibility she stabs me is hot.
Saturn - Trying my best not to just answer "everything" lmao.
For real though, I have some pretty glaring weaknesses. Hypervigilance has me always reading hostility or problems where there are none and then doomspiraling about it, and on the flipside also means I'm basically immune to all but the most direct advances. Low intuitive empathy means I often struggle conceptualizing viewpoints too far from my own. Lacking executive function is hell in general but also specifically makes academia a waking nightmare (get on your fucking meds Ira). I have a bevy of troubles reading people socially that leads to an occasional bad habit of treating people like puzzles to be solved/fixed instead of, y'know, people, because they're easier to understand that way.
Outside shit that's more directly informed by trauma or mental illness, my memory is just also hot garbage, I have some impressively terrible luck, and related but separate to that I have the worst timing of anyone I have ever known. If there is a wrong time to walk into a room, check my messages, do something, or to NOT do any of those, you can be damn sure I'll stumble into it flawlessly.
Hm. Might be telling that I have two paragraphs and could go on about my flaws but struggle to conceptualize five bullet points I like about myself. Oop.
Uranus - Oh boy, we could be here all day, but let me just speedrun some of the changes I would enact if given supreme dictatorial power.
Scale back luxury production, appropriate most billionaire wealth and put them on trial, ensure food/water/housing/internet is universally available to everyone before allowing anyone to have so much as a winter cabin, abolish profit-driven capitalism and fiduciary duty and corporations as we know them, instead implement a similar system to allow people to contribute to projects they believe in/are qualified for, prevent generational accumulation of power via currency/possessions, aggressively expand the schooling system until classrooms are more like 1:5-10 instead of 1:25-35, make post-secondary education freely available, make mental health checkups a routine universal procedure and aggressively expand mental health resources, abolish the prison-industrial system in favour of tremendous spending on restorative and reformative justice (and either low-pop prison or exile for the unreformable, I guess?)
Just, y'know, to name a couple of things. I think at a more cultural level we also really need to address concepts like parenthood, sexuality, and religion.
We've been changing slowly but coasting a lot on "the ways things were done" for far too long. The US still makes laws based on the assumed views of people from the 1700s and a 2000 year old religion, we still think people should have absolute dominion over their child-rearing as long as they don't physically abuse the kid, and murder is PG but a penis is so taboo you rarely even see it in R-rated films.
But yeah no living in this world is great I love going to work and paying my taxes while wars rage and the earth burns.

Hey, super sorry if this seems rude but I just found your replaced au and I was wondering why the mc stays in Diasomnia? I understand that the boys want mc to interact with Eva as little as possible, which is why they're being placed into a different dorm, but considering Eva's goal (to marry a prince and become queen) wouldn't that be made a little harder because of Malleus? If I remember correctly only him and Leona are princes, but Malleus is the only one whose wife will become queen (since Leona's brother is king) so wouldn't that make him the main person Eva's trying to get closer to, and therefore cause her to hang around Diasomnia more? Of course that is a pretty minor detail and I still really love the story and your writing regardless, was just curious if there was a reason for that. Again, really sorry if this is rude and I still love your writing! I hope you're doing well despite how busy you are!

I got your point and don't worry, you didn't do anything rude by asking about this detail. Because the time has been short, I didn't have time to explain all the detail yet and your question help a lot with this.
Okay, first, why has MC been put in Diasomnia? Diasomnia is a pretty closed dorm. Beside Ignihyde. And that place has the most powerful students. To be honest, the vibes in Diasomnia are not exactly magical.
Malleus is quite hard to find. Mc can meet with him because of luck. Eva wants to become a queen and she did try to get close to Malleus by searching for him. But by the time, they meet, Eva is not that brave. Malleus is a king for a reason.
Remember when he said that most humans are afraid of him? That is Eva. She has ambition but isn't brave enough to pursue it.
She did try another tactic, by getting closer to his caretaker, Lilia, and his guards (Sebek and Silver). But most of them are busy. Sebek and Silver protecting Malleus. Meanwhile, Lilia and Malleus are trying to monitor MC's health and make sure nothing goes off.
