What are your thoughts on Jason from Three Jokers?
particularly for me, his emotional dependence is so big just because he confused things with the Barbara
3 JOKERS SPOILERS !
tldr; i ramble a little abt how i hate modern Jason fucking Todd and highlight how much justice this comic did for him
and how modern writers are just trying to turn him into a batfam insert of deadpool
Tumblr media
Yes! I dont think Jason had 100% feelings for Babs, like he said, he thought it could work. It definitely came from a moment of weakness/vulnerability, its often that Jason doesn’t get cared for too often, not in the way he needs. So when Babs let out a hand for him, it hit him HARD. Especially with just being traumatized by the last two jokers, I think its pretty obvious he doesn’t need someone to clean up/watch after him but like need someone to generally emotionally guide him.
my personal pet peeve with most modern Jason Todd canon ships is the laziness of it(b4 i get criticized i think ANY ship with ANY CHARACTERS can be good as long as the writings GOOD and makes SENSE) . GOD NO- i dont ship jason and babs, but they still put an odd amount of effort into it, to at the very least actually flesh out their characters.
Jason doesn’t need a character that fixes his mistakes when he’s overly impulsive, or babies him, or fixes his mistakes with a veil of ‘Your so dumb but i secretly care about you!‘ because then it leads to most of lazy writing where he does something stupid but his gf is here to fix it! so its ok! NO!! HES NOT LEARNING ANYTHING!! YOURE MAKING HIM LOOK STUPID AND MENTALLY BRAIN DEAD!! anyways sorry.
Jason needs someone to break him out of his cycle of impulsiveness and self-destruction, not have him indulge in it.Jason needs to go fucking soul-searching or something im so tired of his ass— REALISTICALLY I COULDN’T DATE COMIC!JASON IF HE DIDNT CHANGE,, HE WOULD FRUSTRATE ME RLLY BAD.
ahem. anyways. I think Jasons note shows a lot about his character and something that the modern writers ignore a lot. Jason CAN change, he just needs a reason, a solid reason to. He doesn’t have to put down his code, or the guns, he just needs someone solid to really make him think about himself. “All I need is one chance to you I can be better. And I will devote my life to making you proud. Happy. Loved.” WHERE IS THIS SWEETHEART RN?? I SWEAR EVERY OTHER WRITER IS MAKING HIM A EMO FUCK-BOY WHOS BRAIN MATTER GOT SUCKED OUT THROUGH HIS COCK?? ahem sorry.
I really love how much DC actually puts details into Jason in this comic. Ex. Jasons helmets abilities being highlighted, “Helmets registering multiple security doors opening across the facility.” OR him saying the chronic pain management book was helpful. SORRY— I REALLY ENJOY DETAILS LIKE THIS. It just makes Jasons technical skill and such more obvious then whats normally stated. Also Jason tracking sea water off a wrench to the Aquarium— where is this skill in more modern comics?? I swear they make Jason a braindead wannabe deadpool sometimes i swear to fucking god. Also him shooting the shark tank so it eats Gaggy— I DIE FOR DETAILS LIKE THIS.
They don’t even get rid of his humor in 3 jokers either, he still has a really well displayed personality and his banter with Batman is really bearable for once, it makes sense and its well written. I slightly dislike how hard Babs is being on Jason but i’m not 100% sure what Babs is like. I haven’t read comics centered around her, so I don’t mind it. Also dont mistake this for me disliking babs for rejecting Jay— thats not what i mean at all. Just her constantly saying how he’s a criminal and focusing on getting him in prison like he’s an opp was confusing 2 me..
anyways stop trying to turn red hood into the batfams deadpool challenge!!
inbox is open 2 yap or requests sum!!

can anybody please explain the appeal of tim drake because ive been into the batfamily for a while now and tbh im really confused on why people like his character so much compared to the other robins. like they all have their own thing going on and he just... doesnt?
Have you read his Robin solo? Because if not and you want to try to like him but just don’t understand why people do, that’s what I’d recommend. That and like, Young Justice 1998.
Because Tim definitely... does have his own thing going on. Maybe not in the same way as the others, but like, there’s a reason he has a 183 issue long solo comic that ran for like 16 years: he was fun to read about!
But I will give some more specific thoughts on the subject as a Tim Drake Appreciator™ (this got long im sorry)
The appeal of Tim (especially early on Tim) is kinda the fact that he’s this more normal kid. For a while that is his ‘thing’. He was basically designed to be a self-insert (he definitely became more than that along the way, but from the start he was meant to be relatable) in a different way than how Dick and Jason had been before him.
Like the role of Robin from the start was this way to create a character young readers could identify with more, could see themselves in more. And Dick and Jason did that, but they still had this element to their lives and stories that was more... unattainable for the average reader. Dick was a circus prodigy, Jason was either also a circus prodigy if we remember pre-crisis or if we go with his post-crisis story he’s this street-wise orphaned kid who had a really tough life but still went on to be a hero anyways. Obviously those lives are relatable for some people, but those’re definitely not as broadly recognized as common upbringings especially not by DC trying to market to the ‘average’ kid/young teen.
But the creation of Tim changed the game a bit. Dick and Jason were these aspirations a kid could look to like ‘wow I want to be cool like that!’ but Tim was a Robin designed for kids to look at and go ‘wow, his problems and civilian life are just like mine AND he’s a hero, I want to be cool like that!’, ya know? Tim was... just a clever kid with an average life who managed to connect some dots and had enough drive to want to fix things he saw were a problem, he didn’t have the same kind of heightened drama backstory the others did. The Robins that came after Tim definitely didn’t have this idea of relatability in mind the same way either. Unfortunately Steph’s time as Robin was much more of a marketing ploy than an actual like... decision to make her Robin, so it’s hard to really fit her into this conversation. But Damian from the start was first of all initially created not to be Robin but just as the son of Talia and Bruce back in the 80’s, but when he was later reimagined into the character that would become Robin he had the whole ‘raised by and is the heir to the league of assassins and is the son of batman’ thing going on still. He just was not supposed to be relatable that same way, he was a character designed with different things in mind.
I really think it was more just DC’s 90′s era younger-audience comics in general that tried to push that relatability thing (like in YJ how Cissie even after quitting the team stays a major character as a civilian throughout, and the civilian aspect that’s super present in Bart’s 90s solo too, etc), but later in the 2000’s that idea was definitely pushed to the side in favor of... putting in even more dramatic superhero-y stuff.
And the other thing that’s... such a more normal thing but it actually made him unique here, was that Tim’s dad was still alive until like 2004 (so 15 years into Tim being around as a character). This gave Tim a lot more typical ‘family school girlfriends normal life etc’ problems on top of/in contrast with his superhero problems. These just manifested in very different ways than they could with the other Robins because of that unique situation with a living civilian parent who doesn’t know about hero stuff (until he did find out which lead to that whole Unmasked thing, but there was only the brief time around War Games & Identity Crisis where Jack knew Tim was actively Robin and he was... still alive) Tim also had his life at school expanded way more than most other Robins, like, he had such an extended supporting cast of civilian friends which is a really interesting thing to read about (and the fact that he hasn’t had that stuff since the New 52 I think really hurts his character)
And then related to that loss of his dad... Personally another thing about Tim that really interests me is how a lot of things were more... his choice. if that makes sense. A lot of characters in the Batfamily were struck with tragedy/extreme trauma before they became heroes and that’s what spurred them into this life of becoming heroes. Tim’s situation wasn’t like that at all! When he first got involved in everything during Lonely Place of Dying, the only tragedy he’d experienced was watching Dick’s tragedy happen. Which sure yes traumatic obviously, but that’s not the same as how pretty much all the other Bats had gone through these very personal losses or other sorts of very first-hand personal traumas that served as motivators. Tim didn’t start to experience those things until after he got involved in the hero life, and aside from his Mom’s death which was more of just an unrelated incident (that technically happened before he was officially Robin but it was during his time training to become Robin), pretty much all these other tragedies and things... would not have happened or been experienced by him had he not become Robin.
That’s not me placing blame on him or anything like that, because god no that’s not how that works, but it’s very interesting because from his point of view he definitely feels that guilt because he knows him being Robin played a role in a lot of it (Thinking specifically about in Adventure Comics #3 when Kon even says “I know what guilt does to you” to him like it’s... it’s a thing with him!). His dad was murdered because he was Robin. He only met Steph and started dating her through being Robin, and thus he would not have experienced the loss of his girlfriend dying like that had he not been Robin. Tim met both Conner and Bart through being Robin, and would not have had a personal connection to them when they died otherwise. The whole Bruce’s death thing after Final Crisis, like. I could go on honestly, that was only talking about losses not even his own experiences nearly getting killed, but yeah, all these personal tragedies were experienced by him specifically because he chose to bring himself into this life, which I think in turn plays into how throughout his comics you see him go from having this really optimistic view on things and being really hopeful to seeing him at that low point he reaches by the time of Red Robin. (thinking about that one post that points out how Tim started out in the 90′s as an optimist and Steph a cynic and by the time they were Red Robin and Batgirl in 2009 they had switched outlooks...)
I also think that him having had such a great team book with the original Young Justice can help contribute to people liking him. His friendships with the rest of the core four and that team in general are really compelling. (and that’s something like again when looking at the other Robins, while Dick had the Titans ofc, Jason never really found footing with a team outside of like one mission with the Titans and then We All Know How Damian’s Teen Titans Stuff Went. Steph also only ever really worked with a team outside the batfam on very brief occasions) and even though I’m not as big of a fan of the 2003 Teen Titans run that came after YJ, people who read Young Justice and also that could follow and be attached to those same characters over a pretty decently long period of time.
Idk man, I don’t really have an ultimate point here i’m just rambling. I can definitely understand not seeing the appeal to him right away (honestly i’ve been into Batfam since like 2013/2014 and Tim did not become one of my faves until 2020) especially if like... idk when you say ‘into the batfamily’ that can mean a lot of different things. If you’re reading more like the bigger events with the batfam sure Tim can kinda fade into the bg a bit, if you’re more talking about fanon the fanon version of him is prettyyyyy uhhhhh not really the same as how he was in pre New 52 canon, if you’re mainly reading New 52 era Batfam stuff then that Tim I also don’t understand the appeal of bc thats Not My Boy, if you’re interested in a different member primarily and only familiar with Tim when he shows up in things focused on that other character then it’s easy to not really understand the appeal right away bc he’s more there to support that character rather than shine in his own right.
I think it’s also worth mentioning he’s just not everybody’s cup of tea, and that’s totally fine. Like, these are fictional characters and sometimes you just will vibe with a character and sometimes you won’t! idk if this helped at all or even made sense. but yeah. I just think he’s neat 😌

Helloo I read your rant about the current state of Nightwing’s relations with the rest of the batfam as well as some of the ‘Ric’ situation... and I’m scared. I haven’t gotten that far into the comics as i’m only just getting into it (I’m at robin: year one and planning to read more on dick from then) But I want to know if the events you talk about are part of the ‘main continuity’ ?? is this somehow related to New52?? (sorry if im too uninformed im really a Noob) Thanks💔🍗🥐
No prob! Happy to try to explain things. You don’t have to apologize for being new lol. Sooo...DC comics loosely breaks up into about 4 different periods:
Pre-Crisis
Post-Crisis/Pre-52
New-52
Rebirth
When people talk about Pre-Crisis comics, they are referring to comics that were made from 1938 to 1985. The OGs. This original continuity was derailed by Crisis on Infinite Earths. This crisis acted as DC’s first hard reboot--and I call it a “hard” reboot because it made everything before this comic in Pre-Crisis no longer canon. So, all the comics from 1986 to 2011 make up their own history/story. This period Post-Crisis is also sometimes referred to as the Pre-52. Especially once you get closer to the year 2011, people tend to use the term Pre-52 over Post-Crisis, but I’d say the two terms are used pretty interchangeably.
Then comes the New 52. In 2011, DC cancelled all it’s pre-existing comics and came out with 52 new comic series. This is another one of DC’s hard reboots; none of Post-Crisis was considered canon any longer.  This reboot was DC’s attempt to modernize their characters and make their stories more accessible. Less history means less for new readers to catch up on. Unfortunately, this approach backfired for a lot of long-time readers. In addition, DC did not take the time to organically rebuild their universe, and New-52 was kind of all over the place. There were lots of continuity errors. The reboot erased some characters, de-aged practically everyone else, and was basically a speed run of Pre-52 history. For example, just so it’s easier to contextualize this, Batman goes through all four Robins in about a nine year period or something in New-52?!? Pretty sure Jason was only Robin for two days and then he died (lol exaggerating but still). Batman was going through sidekicks like they are tissues or something, haha. It's ridiculous. Across the board, everything was really wonky and shortened like this. So, the New-52 had some redeemable aspects, but on the whole I think it is largely viewed negatively. If you’d like some different perspectives on New-52, here are a few articles [x] [x] [x].
So now, we are in DC Rebirth. This is kind of a “soft” reboot. It incorporates some of the Post-Crisis/Pre-52 comics, but it keeps the New-52 continuity. So, the New-52 continuity is still technically the one that counts, the “main continuity,” but whenever DC needs to have things make sense or fit together better, they pick and choose elements of Pre-52 and use it like duct tape. It’s kind of messy and inconsistent, but it’s still better than New-52 I suppose. If you’d like to read more about how Rebirth works and what the consensus is, check these out [x] [x] [x].
Anyway, unfortunately, all the stuff about Nightwing’s relationships in my previous post is currently canon in the main continuity. Boy do I wish this was just an alternate universe or something lmao! Robin: Year One was published in 2001, so you are technically in Pre-52 territory. If you like that, you might be best sticking to Pre-52 content starting out...? Please don’t quit reading because I scared you off, that’d be my worst nightmare! I love the Pre-52 comics, and though I’m really critical of the direction Rebirth has taken, I am still sticking around because I’m hopeful that DC will turn it around.
Hope everything makes a bit more sense now, feel free to hit me up if something still isn’t adding up lol. Good luck!!

hey there! just a heads up that i tried to click on the "why i don't ship" explanation link in your faq and it says that there is no post with that url/it's generally broken. also your "a conversation about recovery" thing is beautiful and hurts in the best way and i love it. have a nice day!
Yes, I intentionally took that link down awhile ago, and last night I went and updated some of the tabs on my blog. Here are my basic thoughts:
I wrote that link years and years ago, while I was first navigating the internet and while I was still figuring out important things about my own identity and opinions. I ran my blog differently back then, but by the end of the first few months, I knew I was uncomfortable with shipping.
As people began to interact with me and my work, I told them over and over again no, I don’t want to talk about that, and I don’t want to write about it, and it makes me uncomfortable. I don’t think that was a common position to take at the time, so it wasn’t what people expected from me.
During those years, I felt like I had to justify myself and give a valid explanation. I wrote that post explaining why I had that boundary, and I put it in a place where anyone could find it.
I said no when people asked, let them make jokes about it, and made jokes about it myself in response. As time went on I got more and more exasperated when I had to repeat myself. I wrote definite rules into my ask box, request tab, and FAQ. People still asked. I wrote it into my description. People still asked.
The truth is yeah, there’s a pretty simple explanation for my discomfort. It makes sense. It’s easy to understand, and most folks think it’s a “good enough” reason to leave me alone. The difference between young-me and current-me is that I no longer feel the need to justify myself.
None of y’all need to know why I set the boundaries that I set. My explanation isn’t relevant, and I’m not obligated to give it. I said no. That’s enough.
I think a good number of folks remember my explanation from the past, and I don’t mind that at all. There may be a time where I talk about it again, in a more appropriate context, so I guess we’ll see.
That’s a lot of information in response to a very helpful ask. Thanks! The link is gone now, and I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the fic :)

Hi! I'm the anon who asked you about Jay's relationship with Batfam in comics (thank you for your thorough answer)and since I Iike how you explain stuff,if you don't mind I'd like to ask you one more. So Im curious about the nature of Slade & Dick's relationship in comics? Cause there's this Sladin ship sailing around and I figured Slade has some kind of a soft spot for Dick or something? What's exactly going on there? I find it intriguing in a way so I'd like to know about behind the curtains:)
Hi there! I’m glad my previous answer helped you, and I’ll definitely try to do my best to advise you with this one too.
Before I get to the comics, I do want to bring up the Teen Titans series on Cartoon Network, because at least for me (and I suspect many others), it was the point where I started shipping Sladin, back before I’d ever read any Batman comics or had any real knowledge of Slade as Deathstroke.
In the cartoon Slade is an outright villain rather than an amoral mercenary with a skewed sense of honour, and he has more than a little obsession with Robin out of a wish to make him his apprentice for reasons. He taunts him throughout the first season and ends up blackmailing Dick to do his bidding in the season finale by threatening the lives of his friends. I think a lot of the shipping is down to Ron Perlman’s fantastic voice acting as Slade, but the dialogue itself is, at some points, kind of uh, yeah. It’s rather different to the comics but just watch some clips and you’ll see what I mean. He even comes back to haunt Dick a few times after the first two seasons where he’s the primary antagonist and their connection (and their similarities) are emphasised again and again by the script. Definitely worth checking out for this interpretation of their relationship alone.
Now, on to the comics. Here things are a little more varied, as Dick and Slade’s relationship has veered across various story arcs from being outright enemies to allies, to something that could be almost be called frenemies depending on what’s going on at the time, and then back again. There are so many interactions between them I couldn’t possibly remember or mention them all (I’m pretty sure I haven’t even read them all), but some notable examples off the top of my head are:
The New Teen Titans. This series is where Slade makes his first ever appearance and his first interaction with Dick and the Teen Titans.  We’re talking all the way back in vol. 1 #2 in 1980. After Slade’s eldest son Grant dies while trying to complete a contract with the Hive to bring them the Titans, Slade takes on the task himself as a way of honouring his son. It’s a very long arc that eventually concludes with the famous Judas Contract storyline (issues #42-44, which DC has recently updated and adapted for one of their upcoming animated films) using the character Terra as his spy among the Titans to discover their secret identities so he can take them down out of costume when they least expect it. Dick is the last Titan he attacks, and the only one who manages to escape him and therefore foils his plans XD But since Slade’s contract to the Hive is fulfilled by this point, he’s not interested in going after them anymore and leaves them alone afterwards (especially after his younger son Jericho becomes a member of the team). It’s a really good story arc that’s worth reading as a basis for the long history they have together, even though there’s not so much dedicated Slade and Dick interaction.
After that, Slade eventually reappears in volume 2 of the New Teen Titans series, during an arc where he and Dick end up working together across a lengthy plotline where all the other Teen Titans have been kidnapped by the Wildebeest that is much more involved. There’s a lot of complicated twists and turns that happen in the story, but also much more conversation between Slade and Dick. They actually work together really well and respect each other for their abilities, and afterwards, when Dick is seeking an outlet for his emotions over Slade’s part in Jericho’s death (long story short, it was a mercy killing as Joey was possessed at the time), Slade just lets him attack him to get that anger out, and even offers to help patch him up afterwards (Pages: One, two, three, and four) It’s interesting stuff, though the storyline itself is not so great in my opinion and the comic as a whole starts to slide in quality as it enters the dreaded 90s, but Slade working alongside Dick is fantastic.
Nightwing: Skipping forward a lot of years here to issue #80 of the original Nightwing solo series here. The basis of the story here is that Slade comes to Bludhaven to pursue a target, and it’s probably my favourite of their interactions in the comics. Let me post some panels to demonstrate why:
Tumblr media
Slade just picks him up like a ragdoll and says “Nice to see you again.” after breaking into and sitting around in Dick’s apartment like a creeper for who knows how long. Which is amazing enough to start with, but then we get:
Tumblr media
After which Slade asks, “So what do I have to do to keep you from interfering?”, and Dick’s reply is, “Kill me.” which Slade has already established he doesn’t really want to do. But even knowing he’s potentially sabotaging his mission by telling Dick about it, he still does so, because he respects Dick too much to do otherwise.
It’s a really good issue that demonstrates this aspect of their relationship at its core best, and I think the version of it that a lot of people (like me) enjoy most and find fascinating about them.
(Of course, this kind of frenemies thing doesn’t last, as Slade eventually becomes a genuine antagonist for Dick and the Titans again later on. They both go back to pretty much outright hating each other after Dick works to convert Slade’s daughter Rose to heroism and turning her against him, and Slade plays his part in destroying Bludhaven as a part of the Secret Society of Supervillains afterwards.)
There’s a lot more than this, of course, but for me these are the main ones XD
So, while your mileage may vary based on personal interpretation, there’s accuracy in saying that Slade at the very least respects Dick as an opponent of great skill in any continuity, and does, at some points, have that soft spot for him you talked about. A lot of the fascination for the pairing comes from the fact that they do have such a long history together throughout the comics, starting all the way back when Dick was still Robin, and the various ways in which their relationship has changed over the years. Sometimes they outright hate each other, sometimes they’re almost friends, and that leaves a lot of room for fandom to play in. Slade also counts as an alternative, anti-Batman in a way, older male influence in Dick’s life, which has it’s own interesting possibilities.
Personally, I enjoy them best when it’s a little twisted and messed up (age difference, power imbalance and the fact that they’re on opposing sides most of the time, etc.). Other people may feel differently, but I’d definitely advise reading some of the comic storylines involving the two of them, and checking out at least the first season of the Teen Titans cartoon to see where shippers of the pairing are coming from.

I think the whole ’tim is the relatable robin’ thing is a flawed idea because yeah he was made to be relatable to the audience who were reading batman comics at the time. but as a woman of colour he is like the farthest from relatable to me...Im always seeing white men as heroes in the media and never people like myself. the narrative of ‘anyone can do good’ doesn’t come across well through Tim because of his identity whereas characters like miles morales embody it much better. you know what I mean
Yeah no I totally get you!
Its extremely true what you said, like when I or others talk about him being created to be ‘relatable’ it still really was only for a specific demographic. I primarily bring up the ‘relatable robin’ idea when people ask about why he was able to become so popular despite being a bit more mundane compared to previous Robins/other characters (especially at his start) because like, in the 90’s when he was first getting super prominent he was definitely designed to target a young white male audience and be relatable for them, because that was what DC’s primary reader base they marketed to at the time was.
I also absolutely agree he’s not really the ideal posterchild for ‘anyone can do good/be a hero’ the way he was initially intended/marketed to be, because again… he’s only really that for such a specific demographic that’s already super catered to in superhero comics. ‘young cis white guy’ is the pretty much the least innovative path to go down when creating a character, and him now being queer is only a super recent development that was obviously not part of him at time of creation.
I think part of why I am drawn to Tim as much as I am is because I love the element to his story of ‘he got himself into all of this of his own free will/sense of duty rather than being pushed into it by tragedy like those around him, but that decision has had nasty consequences he needs to deal with and led to tragedy’ like especially in juxtaposition with the rest of the Batfam who came into everything with these severe losses and traumas, it’s just a neat contrast. But I think that if I was trying to get introduced to him/enjoy him as a character just thinking about it from a ‘he represents how anyone can be a hero/do good!’ point of view i doubt i’d like him nearly as much.
Other characters (I don’t know too much about Miles just bc I don’t really read Marvel stuff but just from like watching Into the Spider Verse I absolutely agree he’s a great example) can definitely embody that idea in a very compelling way, but with Tim I also don’t think it works as like… his selling point or anything.

for the character headcannons ask game, jason and cass?
ALRIGHT ALRIGHT im putting this one under a cut because it got SUPER long bc i cant shut up ever
lets start w jason
A (realistic headcanon):
ok using the ‘realistic’ category here loosely but GOD i love the idea of Damian & Jason having interacted while Jason was staying with the League before getting dunked in the Lazarus Pit. like. this obviously would need to be set more in preboot and following the Lost Days & Batman Annual 25 version of Jason’s resurrection, but god the idea of it just makes me scream in a good way. Like... these are things Jason likely doesn’t remember very clearly once he’s brought back to life more fully by the pit because he was uh pretty catatonic, but Damian being a little kid and knowing about the boy that his mother keeps around the base, that she’s trying to help bring back to health. Damian not even knowing that’s his big brother, just that he’s a presence that shares his mother’s attention. Jason again being unresponsive but like, ok god you know that part of lost days where Talia shows the others observing him that he only fights back at those he perceives as genuine threats trying to hurt him,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because Jason can perceive that she’s safe, she’s not actually trying to hurt him, he trusts her because she saved him? thinking about lil child Damian who is ya know already being trained in fighting stuff and like the idea of him trying to provoke Jason just to see what happens but Jason not fighting back because on some level be it his connection to Talia or even little baby Damian visually reminding him of Bruce, he knows that Damian is safe too 🥺
and then when Jason and Damian meet again in Gotham as Red Hood & Robin respectively, Jason not really remembering because there was so much going on back then for him, but Damian realizing that oh... that was Him
B (hilarious):
alright so if we are looking at comics currently, in modern stuff jason is what, like 22? hes old enough to drink in the US but still definitely early 20s so around my around my age, thats what im using as a basis here. if we adjust timeline and still consider his death having happened when he was 15, that puts it around 2013. and then coming back to like interacting with people about three years later if we still kinda base things off of the preboot timeframe (since we never got a super solid retelling of the timeline of death -> resurrection -> training -> tries to get revenge aside from knowing he went to the all-caste instead of the lost days version of the story) making him reenter the regular world and stuff around age 18 in 2016. meaning a solid three years of pop culture that he was entirely missing, and like im sorry but he really doesn’t strike me as the type to bother looking into what he missed, he’s kinda busy focusing on other stuff. lets take a quick look at some major things from those years. 2013 gave us ‘what does the fox say’ and ‘the harlem shake’ . 2014 had that time U2 just put a fuckin album on everyone’s phones, The Fault In Our Stars movie came out. 2015 introduced the phrase ‘Netflix and Chill’ and the whole blue & black vs gold & white dress debate happened. imagine any of the other batkids (or even arguably roy during rhato stuff) bringing these things up and jason’s ensuing confusion. thank you for your time
C (heart-crushing):
so. there are two specific instances from rebirth era Jason i want to bring up here and much like a lot of these it’s less a headcanon and more of an inference based on observations, but i wanna take a sec to discuss Jason’s relationship with other people’s death. early in rebirth, Tim ‘dies’ from that whole thing in detective comics. he didn’t actually die, we as readers know, but in-universe they all very much so thought he was dead. frustratingly a lot of the batfam wasn’t really shown mourning him aside from in the Detective Comics Rebirth title itself (which just. when a major character dies even if its temporary- that should have a ripple effect) BUT an exception to that is in RHATO 2016, where we get this offhanded comment in Jason’s internal monologuing
Tumblr media
similarly later when Roy, who like, had an incredibly close relationship w Jason that had just gotten mended before Heroes in Crisis, gets fuckin murdered in that whole thing... Jason doesn’t go to his funeral either. He leaves a dramatic voice mail and then visits the grave on his own later, choosing to instead keep working on the mission they’d started rather than going and taking the time to mourn properly.
Jason’s relationship with death is incredibly complicated, obviously. He has died, he has come back, and he now is willing to cross the line most other bats won’t and will kill people when he deems it necessary. I think thats something important though- he doesn’t just like... go around killing for fun (usually, some writers preboot made him a little murder happy but even then usually this still was vaguely followed) he kills people he thinks deserved it. Like, even looking back at the mess of Morrison’s Jason during Batman & Robin 2009, Jason was still trying to bring a sense of justice with who he was killing (”punishment that fits the crime”), it wasn’t killing for the sake of killing. He sees things in this kind of almost black and white ‘people who deserve it’ and ‘people who don’t’ way, and he has no problem dealing with death when it’s with the people he thinks deserve it.
but when someone who doesn’t in his mind ‘deserve it’ gets killed? i think he just goes into total avoidance mode. throws himself into other things he’s doing, tries not to dwell on it too much no matter how much he still thinks about it (this is especially evident in him consistently telling people “i’m fine!” after what happened to Roy, despite bringing Roy up literally like every few issues for a WHILE after he died and very clearly still struggling with it, Artemis is the only one who gets through to him on it a little bit)
but yeah, I just think that from Jason’s relatively unique situation of having been murdered, he knows what it’s like and he is perfectly fine wishing that on people he thinks are bad and deserve it, but it crushes him to imagine the people he loves and cares about having to experience something as painful as what he went through. not to mention the whole “I came back, why do I get a second chance at all this when they, who are a much better person than I am, probably won’t” mindset we get some implications of him having
D (canon is a coward and won’t)
hello DC i am once again insisting a batfam member is bisexual
CASS TIME
A (realistic headcanon):
ok so we know cass likes ballet. thats canon. however i think we also should in general explore cass experiencing other types of dance/performance as well, be it herself as a performer or even just watching. like... god imagine her & like my brain just automatically for group activities puts her with tim steph and duke but also for this in particular I feel would be a Jason embraced activity, but like them going to see a broadway show or some other professional theatre or something, and her just being enthralled by the reading of body language of the performers! like again by any point in current stuff cass does have like, the ability to speak fine (reading still hard tho) but even so I think like. okay im a theatre kid if that’s not obvious from the Everything About Me but one thing I always do after seeing a show is ya know spend dinner afterwards discussing it with whoever i saw it with.
I just think that like, bringing those people i just mentioned to the table to discuss seeing a show after would be so FASCINATING because cass would bring this whole perspective of critiquing their acting on a whole different level- not based on how well they delivered lines out loud, but by what their body language was saying as they moved on stage. like im very amused by the idea of cass getting a totally different picture in her mind about what a character’s motivations were because she was paying way more attention to what their physicality was saying vs the words that were written and how they were delivered. i think the debates her and the others would have would be EPIC there. jason defending the text as it was written adamantly and cass being like ‘ok yeah sure but thats not what they did’
B (hilarious):
cass having no concept of money because why would she bother? is SO funny to me. like it’s not that she couldn’t be reasonable if she wanted to, but like, she knows that the Waynes are well off so it’s not something she actually needs to be concerned about, so she just goes hog wild. takes steph out to fancy dinners and makes steph order for them since cass ya know doesn’t really read the menus, and steph’s like ‘jesus christ this costs-” “don’t worry about it” “but cass-” and she just holds up one of bruce’s credit cards and steph’s still like “but you don’t even know the range-” “it is fine”
bruce does not have the heart to tell her to stop
C (heart-crushing):
i mean this is pretty much canon but especially now after death metal where she’s remembering, not just being told by a guy using weird alternate timeline technology, that she used to be an adopted member of the Wayne family... like that hurts so bad. To look at these people who have ya know been kind to her, Bruce has still been a father-like figure to her (i mean literally from the moment they met in New 52 canon during the flashback in Batman & Robin Eternal, where he’s telling her that she’s not a monster just because of what people forced her to do.... that she’s a hero... that hug.... dad behavior), and they do to some extent treat her as family... But to then really know, to feel and remember that she was actually adopted! She was a part of their family. To look at how she’s been calling herself Orphan while working with them this whole time... that’s so heartbreaking! I have cried about this idea so much! I want so badly a conversation between her and Bruce now where he offers to officially adopt her again, I need it so bad and if it doesn’t happen at some point in the next year or two I will be so distraught.
D (canon is a coward and won’t)
i want an in-depth exploration of cass’ relationship to her own gender. being raised without language and you know with so much of her life being independent (remember: CASS RAN AWAY AROUND THE WORLD WITHOUT REALLY KNOWING ANY SPOKEN LANGUAGE) and outside of an organized society impressing too much of gender expectations on her, i feel like the way she experiences it would be very unique! like sure she’s so far been fine with being assigned ‘girl’ (ya know that comes with batgirl, and how people just automatically treated her based on how she looks) but in terms of gender expression and like her actual relationship with ‘traditional femininity’ etc like... because of how she was raised I just think she’d have a really different perspective on it that could be cool to explore, and I think she’d fall outside of the binary after she really thinks about how she identifies.
tldr on that: she/they nb cass is what i’m getting at here

Anonymous said: Hi! Do you still like Tim Drake?
More than I can describe!
Anonymous said: Please tell me those law school quotes are all from one professor
They are not, but MOST of them are from the civ pro professor. His name is Counseller, and he’s great. He got a standing ovation after his speech at my friend’s graduation yesterday. I once went to dinner at his house and a movie afterwards. He had us all hide his candy in our bags so he didn’t have to pay concession stand prices.
@whambamthanksbatfam said: Do you know canonical nicknames for the Batboys?
Hold up lemme see what I have on file
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Off the top of my head I can also think of times that Tim referred to himself as “Timmy” (usually while pretty young), and of course Dick has “boy wonder”
Anonymous said: What do you think will happen to nightwing comics? Writer changes in April, will they be able to reverse the amnesia arc? Do you think maybe the damage to the character is irreversible? I don't understand why they'd allow it especially after what happened when they tried to kill him off. It's also 35th anniversary of his first appearance in a few months. Looking at teen titans, jon kent's age, young justice "coming back" I feel concerned for dc comics' future ):
I’m basically taking my usual approach, which is (as far as comics are concerned)... everything will return to its most profitable form. Comics have a set form. With a few key exceptions-- changes in superhero persona, for example-- things generally make their way back to the “classic” form. Therefore I expect Dick to go back to being Nightwing, in a form we would recognize as typically Nightwing.
Anonymous said: wait..... waitwaitwaitwait..... wait. did u just swear in that hashtag? i have followed you for like 2 years and the closest i've seen to swearing is "sweet texas on high" which ended up becoming a bad habit of mine to say irl and then have to explain where the hell i heard that, and then i said it enough that one friend started saying it as well, then it just spread like a virus in my friend group (this isn't a complaint this is just surprise and amusement. love ur blog!)
Glad to see my nonsense swears are spreading! To be honest, I (really) swear a lot. Don’t tell my mom
Anonymous said: Hey! I have to choose a quote for my yearbook and i want to do a batman/superhero quote but i cant think of one and was wondering if you could help me out? Im looking to go for kinda funny but also has a bit of meaning, ya know? Anyway thank you!
Oooooh boy lemme see
Tumblr media
I like Alfred’s quote in these panels. I would also maybe suggest:
"Whenever someone's asked what power they wish they had, flying is always at the top of the list. But I have to admit. I've learned to love falling too." (Nightwing #142, 2008)
I don’t know how helpful I can be on this one, honestly, but there’s my two cents.
night-mom said: Hi, I have a bat-centric side blog called Bat-Losers-Inc. I just discovered some of your writing on tumblr and have been slowly going through it when I have the time. I really love how you write each character of the Batfam and how each of them feels very distinct from each other but also different from their common representations in the Batman fandom. So anyway, I was wondering if you had a favorite Bat family member to write from in terms of point of view/personality?
Hmmmm a couple of years ago, I would have said Jason. For whatever reason, I’ve always given him a talking/fighting style that’s the most similar to my own, but lately I find myself drawn to Tim and Damian. My guess? Their points of view allow me to explore some things I’ve been going through-- specifically a nasty bout of depression, anxiety, and a psychotic breakdown. I would also say that Dick is the hardest for me to write, followed by Bruce, Duke, and Cass. Stephanie is pretty easy.
Anonymous said: For some reason, I have this huge need of some angst... Could u please do a prompt of suicide Tim? But he manages to success?? Please???
Listen. I’m definitely not going to do that, and I don’t think I need to explain why.
Anonymous said: I reread some old B&R comics. Bruce came back from his weird time adventures and one of the first things he said to Damian was, that it was his job as Robin to make sure that Batman gets home safe. Like yeah, I guess it is? But also you're talking to your 10 year old son, I'm waiting for that mentality to bite you in the ass at some point. I mean it kind of did when Damian died to save Dick in Batman Inc. Bruce's parenting is really dangerous sometimes o_o
I agree. I’ve always had a problem anytime the Batman/Robin relationship is framed around what Bruce needs. For the benefit of the child? Sure, I’ll suspend belief for that one. Because an adult needs it? No thanks. That’s why Tim’s origin story bothers me a whooooole lot.
@therusticate said: I just read the fanfic you put out around Christmas with the files on Dick and Damien and I MELTED. There were TEARS! I’m hoping to find some more of your work on your blog; I love your writing style and how everything flows. Thank you so much for creating content! You did a fantastic job and I love it.
Oh, thank you so much! I’m particularly fond of that fic
Anonymous said: how's outlining going?
Anonymous said: what is it that you are outlining??
Anonymous said: I hope your outline turns out good and you do well ❤ you can do it!!
@couldnt-pick-a-name said: Have you finished your outlining yet?
Anonymous said: Good luck on your exams!! I hope they go well and you take care of yourself and don't get too stressed
I appreciate you all for keeping me on topic <3
Exams went... probably pretty well? We’ll find out when grades come back. I was outlining for immigration law, federal administrative law, and constitutional law-- and I did get all of them done. Hallelujah.
Anonymous said: Young Justice 2019 just got published and I realized I haven't consumed enough YJ material!! Do you have any comic recommends??
Oooooh I guess that depends on which Young Justice you’re talking about? Original v. based on TV show? Either way, my recommendation is to look up the associated series. Original YJ (Tim, Bart, Cassie, Conner, etc.) is the 2000 version by Peter David. That team just got a reboot, and I’m reasonably sure that’s what you’re asking about. Then there’s the YJ comic based on the tv show (2011, I believe).
Either way, I like pretty much the entire series. Sounds simple, but that’s my rec.
@dontstopkiwibea said: I've been thinking about your fic with Damien and Tim having a conversation about Tim's depression and the time when Bruce was missing. I think about all that missing time a lot and how so much /could/ have happened to Tim but didn't. And then I think about Damien being sad when Tim was dead. And then I think about Dick hearing about Tim's mental state during that time, how bad it really got, and maybe Bruce learns too. Ahhhh I don't know about you but I want more fics about Tim and getting help
Honestly? Same. I feel like there’s a lot of emotion that’s never officially explored, and that’s a problem I personally enjoy fixing.
Anonymous said: You asked for headcanons, so: Damian likes to give Tim a hard time, and one day Damian scoffs at the idea of Tim getting a pet, saying he’d probably kill it through neglect. Tim doesn’t appreciate that and ends up with a goldfish out of spite. He learns everything there is to know, and his fish is gonna thrive, dammit. And it does. Tim comes to genuinely care for this little creature (and secretly Damian is really pleased Tim is showing such interest in something that isn’t casework or WE).
Love it! Give Tim A Fish 2019
Anonymous said: What are you most looking forward to this year?
Hmmmmm... this is maybe a lil over optimistic, but I’m really looking forward to getting better this year. I’m trying harder and I have better resources than I ever had before.
@xylophonicsynapse said: Which of the bat-kids makes music playlists?
I’d say that all of them DO it sometimes, but the one who really gets into it is Damian. He likes his music organized, thank you very much.
Anonymous said: Hey Amy! Saw the ask about the line "The sun is UP and so is JESUS we are partying today." and I thought it was hilarious I MUST know where its from! Plz and thank you <3
