🤲what do YOU get out of writing?

OMG I DONT KNOW! Like why do creative people feel the need to make stuff, I can't explain it. I just know that it's what I want to do as a creative outlet. And like usually (NOT LATELY BECAUSE THE LAST COUPLE MONTHS MY LIFE HAS BEEN A DISASTER) I reserve 9-10pm every night as WRITING TIME and like, it's not a chore for me! It's like a reward at the end of the day. So I spend all day thinking about what I'll write at 9pm when it's writing time. :D So there's like the half of it that's creative & spiritual to do, and also the half that's just like, my little Me Time that I allow myself that helps me unwind. :D

💋when you leave comments on a fic, do you want to hear back from the writer?

I DO but I don't get offended if they don't reply lol. But like ngl, if I notice a fic author doesn't reply to comments, I am less likely to leave a huge comment. Like one time I left a BOOK REPORT on a fic and the author replied to like, everyone EXCEPT me who was leaving emojis and stuff? And I felt really bad like I made them uncomfortable or something. So like. I tend to comment as I read and I like to copy & paste lines in and stuff, but if the author never replies I'm less likely to take the extra time to do this because I don't know if it's well received. 😅

✨What's a fic you've posted you wish you could breathe life into again and have people talking about it? (or simply a fic you wish got more credit)

jkgald wording it like that makes me squeamish but I felt like the gangbang fic I wrote for the BDSM zine kinda flopped 😬 like it has some comments and people who did comment were really excited but like, proportionally to my other Sheith fics it didn't do well. And I wasn't sure if it was like TOO MUCH or something, bc it got a lot of hits but not so many comments, like it made me wonder if people opened the link out of curiosity but then noped out. Like I have Sheith fics with less hits that have 2 or 3x the comments. Whoops! And I wonder if I overcomplicated it. IDK!!!!!!!!!! But I was happy with how it came out so it's not necessarily that I would want to like fix or anything. I just felt sad that no one liked it. 😂

💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?

I think maybe The Front ? I was a little overwhelmed by the response bc I thought I was being like extremely self indulgent and niche about my own kinks and people wound up being like SO excited and kind and generous with comments it just really surprised me. 😳 LIKE YOU DONT EVEN LEARN KEITH'S NAME FOR 21K, I was calling him "the creature" LMAOOOOOOOOOOO it just was like so extremely catered to my own individual needs I was surprised. 😂

💌share something with us about an up-and-coming work (WIP) that has you excited!

For Sheith right now I'm back to working on my fic Tonight the Stars Revolt! which is like a retelling of canon if they were friends with benefits who kept fooling around after near death missions to relieve stress and like I WROTE THE FIRST 50K IN A MONTH on my break after my first ship contract and I didn't intend for it to get so complicated and plotty and I also absolutely did not intend for the last few chapters to be like A YEAR APART FROM EACH OTHER but I kept getting distracted doing exchanges and stuff, and I kinda try to like alternate Sheith and VC so I'd write a chapter, then write a VC fic, then it was time to go back to Sheith but I had an exchange, then VC, then a zine, then VC, etc. It just really got away from me but like it's my baby and it's where I pour all my meta and headcanons and I think about it constantly so every time I return to it I'm very exciting! The upcoming chapter includes a flashback about BABY KEITH and his DAD and a SNAKE and I'm really excited about it. :)

FOR VC IM FOAMING AT THE MOUTH OBSESSING OVER WRITING A FIC ABOUT THE YEAR MARIUS WAS HELD CAPTIVE AND THE SEXUAL TENSION BETWEEN HIM AND HIS CAPTOR AND THE STAGES OF GRIEF FOR HIS FREEDOM, I hope to start writing it maybe in the new year hdkjslgasgdjal I can't stop thinking about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dreaming about alternatives & togetherness

sometimes i go back on instagram and it is soooo baddddd every time!!! i get sucked in and it makes me addicted to proving myself at an unsustainable pace even if i'm only on there for a little while. being offline also sucks though because it is so alienating. this world is already so alienating and it feels strange to compound my alienation by just running away from the problem. but what else is there? i linked a podcast above that i really love. this episode made me feel so hopeful for a future where sharing art online wouldn't be hell. because of the alienating hell of instagram and the lack of alternatives (although tumblr does feel somewhat better i think?) i often feel alone in my frustrations and desires for change. but obviously i'm not alone and i'm not the only one who is upset. there are really smart people dreaming up really smart alternatives and new ways of sharing/relating to art and each other online. everyone knows that social media as it now exists sucks but it feels totally obligatory. it's not though!

i want to talk about alternatives. fun ones!! new things to try!! even if most alternatives fail, i think that dreaming of a better future is what we all need right now so that we can fight to make it a reality. i often feel deflated and defeated about the world but today im feeling hopeful. this is what imagining can do to you!!

i've been trying to practice my own alternatives to instagram/social media for a long time even though i can't be perfect about my own ideals. i'm just one person and i think all of these issues need collective solutions. but until then... here are my own individual solutions that i've found that make my life feel more peaceful and connected. yes, a lot of them are about art because art and life are not separate!! here they are: emailing and sending letters to my friends, getting a flip phone and forcing myself to remain present and problem-solve in real time, creating art/doing things that won't be shared online, making art/doing things that i'm bad at/can't post about/take a long long time (process over product), creating art in the material world (i <3 sculptures), using art as play and experimentation (not a place for ego but for earnest attempts at discovery), collaborating with others in art, generally slowing down, etc...

the reason that i went back on instagram was to share that i made a zine. i wanted to make a zine so people that appreciate my art could interact with it in physical space that isn't instagram. ironically those people are all on instagram so i had to use the stupid app to break the news.... smh!!

i ordered 33 of the zines and they will be here in 2 weeks!!! im very excited to see how they turn out!! it is a collection of photos, drawings, & paintings that i've made over the past 8 years. it's mostly more recent stuff though. i just wanted to put them all together to map the things that I continue to make art about and also people that i've made art with/taken photos of over the years. my photos are really a collaboration between me and my subject. most of the time my photos are of those that i am closest to. the zine is full of people that have really meant something to me and that makes it feel precious to me. anyways... yeah. i'm thinking about people, places, ideas, & patterns that i return to. what is significant about those things? what do i bring to them each time? how do i recontextualize them each time that i return, with my new experiences and ways of seeing? how do they continue to shape me? i have no answers but i have questions and guesses.

i will need to charge $7 to make up printing/shipping costs for anyone outside of boston. if you're in boston, it will just be $5 and i can hand it to you. that will be nice. if you don't want one - that's also totally fine!! im just trying to stop complaining about how much things suck and do something about it all. well, i'll actually still probably be complaining at least a little bit. but i also want to attempt to find better ways of being. i want to imagine a better future. a future that feels less like a race, a competition, a path of endless alienation. i just want peace and love! that sounds dumb but it's soooo true.

How many pages does the physical book have? I'm trying to approximate shipping costs (within US), haha [link]

Currently the fanbook is estimated to have around 80 pages, but the exact number may change. When ordering from our shop the cost of shipping will automatically be calculated based on the selected bundle size and your address.

All bundles are not limited right? [link]

All bundles offered are available for purchase with no limit during the pre-order period (April 2nd - May 7th, 11:59 PM EST). If you're placing your order via a Group Order, make sure to check your GO's order deadline as it will be earlier than May 7th.

hi, im interested in getting the fable bundle or the revision (physical book only) but was wondering if there's any possible way of getting the tote bag separately? i don't really think i can afford the full bundle just so i can get the tote bag 😞😞😞 [link]

Hello! There may be a chance at a later date during our leftover sales period (exact date TBD), as we will be offering leftover items for purchase a la carte. However, this isn't something we can guarantee as the item stocks for leftover sales will be determined by how many extras of each item we have after the shipping period. The tote bag will also ONLY be produced if we reach our 150 orders goal, and is not a guarantee.

Im new to zines why does the money go to mod Pepper first and not mod Tange the finance n production mod? [link]

Hello anon! Payments made by purchasing the fanbook automatically go into a separate account used to fund the production of the fanbook, and do not go to any one specific person. As mod Tange handles finance and production they will be the person primarily tracking payments, but all mods have access to the account.

how many pages will the memo pad be? [link]

The memo pad will be 50 pages and have an adhesive strip on the back of each page (like a sticky-note pad).

is it possible to mix and match parts of bundles? or buying individual products outside of bundles? [link]

The only way to purchase items outside of bundle sets would be during leftover sales (exact date TBD) via a la carte listings, but we cannot guarantee we will have leftover stock of every item at the moment.

im going through my likes rn to go on a reblog spree and came across a post you had reblogged about it being okay w people asking about your fic writing and i liked it so i could remember to ask about your fics and ANYWAYS aside from Hellcheer what ships/couples do you like writing about (or just feature in your fics) the most? and if you have another fave ship, what headcanons do you have about them? 💕

These answers are probably going to be obvious cause they're the main background ships in my WIP.

One ship I was surprised I enjoy writing as much as I do is Rockie. I think maybe it's because Vickie is a bit similar to Chrissy in that we barely know anything about her, so there's just so much potential and room for figuring out characterization.

One funny thing I discovered after I'd already written the first few chapters: in the Rebel Robin novel, it's apparently revealed that Robin's parents are chill former hippies (or something similar).. which is the exact backstory I came up with for Vickie lol. Whoops! And yet, it's still my favourite headcanon for Vickie. She knows about a dozen cannabis strains and how to properly grow them (her and Argyle get along like a house on fire), is an experienced gardener and started making molotov cocktails at a very young age cause some hippies age out of peaceful protest. She's also a baby bisexual with zero knowledge of queer culture, which Robin knows plenty about through mail order zines from New York and San Francisco and literally anything else cool she could find to order in the back pages of Ms. magazine, so digging into that culture and their shared queer identity is a big part of their early relationship.

It's my first time writing them, so it's definitely a learning experience and there are things I would already change about published chapters, but I'm still excited about them. Maybe even more so cause it's almost guaranteed we'll be getting more of them in S5, so there is actually canonical hope for them. Unlike my other favourite ship to write in Hellcheer fics.

Which is, of course, Stali. Kali hasn't even appeared yet in my posted chapters, but GOD I love her interacting with Steve. They're so unexpected, and she challenges Steve in ways he never has been in canon, and he provokes a vulnerability in her no one else has. She finds him disarming, and then she kind of questions why because he's such a goofy guy. But Kali needs that goofiness! Maybe I'm so excited about them because I never found Steve all that interesting before I discovered this ship, and he finally feels like someone I care about exploring in relation to Kali.

I feel like a Hellcheer traitor by saying this, but I'm also very into exploring Chrissy with Kali, Eden, and Vickie. I just think Chrissy deserves everything, okay!

It's really surprising that you're so well versed in older fandoms and yet participate in new popular ones (that cdrama, kpop) is this by design? Im in my twenties and my interest turnover is already way slower than it used to be

You know, that’s a really interesting question. I wouldn’t say it’s by design exactly in that I do tend to just follow what strikes my fancy, and I can’t force myself to want to write fic for just anything. (I find it easier to like reading fic without serious involuntary emotional investment, but writing takes more. Vidding I can do on command most of the time, but I don’t usually bother unless I have a lot of feels or I’m fulfilling someone’s prompt.)

However, me getting into BTS was 100% due to me wanting to understand BTS enough to explain to people who weren’t very interested but wanted to know what was going on in fandom lately. Under normal circumstances, I run the dance party at Escapade, the oldest extant slash con. We borrowed vividcon’s thing of playing fanvids on the wall--all of them set to dance music--as the soundtrack for the dance party. This means I’m creating a 3-hour mixtape of fannishness, which has amazing potential to make people feel in the know about Fandom Today... and equal potential to make them feel alienated if nothing they care about shows up. Only about 100-150 people attend the con, so it really is possible to make a playlist that feels inclusive yet informative--it just takes a huge amount of work.

Every year, I do a lot of research on which fandoms are getting big and look for vids from vidders people won’t have heard of, so there is an element of consciously trying to keep up with things. Generally, I only get into these fandoms myself if I had no idea what they were and then suddenly, oops, they’re my kryptonite, like the buddy cop android plot in Detroit: Become Human, which sucked me in hard for like 6 months on the basis of a vid.

(So if you’re into cross-fandom meta and associated stuff as one of your fannish interests, you tend to have broader knowledge of different fandoms, old and new, than if you’re just looking for the next place you’ll read fic. It’s also easier to love vids for unfamiliar things than fic.)

But though I was only looking for a basic primer on BTS, BTS has 7 members with multiple names and no clear juggernaut pairing, not to mention that AU that runs through the music videos and lots of other context to explain. The barrier to understanding WTF was going on at all was high enough that to know enough to explain, I had to be thoroughly exposed... And once I was over that hurdle, oops, I had a fandom.

In terms of old vs. new, here’s the thing: kpop fandoms in English and c-drama fandoms in English right now feel a lot like anime fandom in English did in the early 00s. I had a Buddy Cops of the 70s phase in the middle, but my current fannishness is actually a return to my older fannishness in many ways.

What do I mean about them being similar?

Yes, I know some wanker will show up to say I think China, Korea, and Japan are indistinguishable, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the way that I used to routinely meet Italian and French and German fans, Argentinian and Mexican, Malaysian and Indonesian and Filipino too. English-language fandom of SPN or MCU may have all those fans from all those countries, but it feels very American most of the time. English-language fandom of a non-English-language canon is more overtly about using English as a lingua franca.

It also tends to attract people who as a sideline to their fannishness are getting into language learning and translation, which are my other passion in life after fanworks fandom. (I speak only English and Spanish and a bit of Japanese, but I’ve studied German, French, Russian, Mandarin, Old English, and now Korean.)

Nerds arguing about methods of language learning and which textbooks are good and why is my jam. This is all over the place in English-language fandoms of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean media. Those fandoms also tend to be full of speakers coming from a Germanic or Romance languages background who face similar hurdles in learning these languages. (In other words, if you’re a native Japanese speaker trying to learn Korean, the parts that will be hard for you are different than if you’re an English speaker, but you’re also usually not doing fandom in English.)

There’s also an element of scarcity and difficulty of access and a communal attempt to construct a canon (in the other sense) of stuff from that country that pertains to one’s fannishness. So, for example, a primer explaining the genre of xianxia is highly relevant to being a n00b Untamed fan, but just any old thing about China is not. A c-drama adapted from a danmei webnovel is perhaps part of the new pantheon of Chinese shit we’re all getting into, but just any old drama from decades ago is probably not... unless it’s a genre precursor to something else we care about. Another aspect here is that while Stuff I Can Access As A N00b Who Doesn’t Speak The Language may be relatively scarce, there’s a vast, vast wealth of stuff that exists.

This is what it felt like to be an anime fan in the US in 2000. As translation got more commercial and more crappy series were licensed and dumped onto an already glutted market, the vibe changed. No longer were fans desperately trying to learn enough of the language to translate or spending their time cataloguing what existed or making fanworks about a show they stuck with for a bit: the overall community focus turned to an endless race of consumption to keep up with all of the latest releases. That’s a perfectly valid way of being fannish, but if I wanted that, I’d binge US television 24/7.

Anime fandom got bigger, but what I liked about anime fandom in English died, and I moved on. (Okay, I first moved on to Onmyouji, which is a live action Japanese thing, but still.)

Hardcore weeaboos and now fans of Chinese and Korean stuff don’t stop at language: people get excited about cooking, my other other great passion. Times a thousand if the canon is something like The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty, which is full of loving shots of food preparation. People get excited about history! Mandarin and Japanese may share almost nothing in terms of grammar or phonology, but all of East Asia has influence from specific Chinese power centers historically, and there are commonalities to historical architecture and clothing that I love.

I fell out of love with the popular anime art styles as they changed, and I’m not that into animation in general these days. (I still own a shitton of manga in art styles I like, like Okano Reiko’s Onmyouji series.) I’ve become a filmmaker over the last decade, and I’m very excited about beautiful cinematography and editing. With one thing and another, I’m probably not going to get back into anime fandom, but it’s lovely to revisit the cultural aspects I enjoyed about it via live-action media.

BTS surprised me too, to be honest. I really dislike that early 90s R&B ballad style that infests idol music (not just Korean--believe me, I resisted many rounds of “But Johnny’s Entertainment though!” back in the day). While I like some of the dance pop, I just don’t care. But OH NO, BTS turn out to be massive conscious hip hop fanboys, and their music sounds different. I have some tl;dr about my reactions in the meta I wrote about one of my fanvids, which you can find on Dreamwidth here.

But back to your comment about turnover: I know fans from the 70s who’ve had one great fannish love and that’s it and more who were like that but eventually moved on to a second or third. They’re... really fannishly monogamous in a way I find hard to comprehend. It was the norm long ago, but even by the 90s when far more people were getting into fandom, it was seen as a little weird. By now, with exponentially more people in fandom, it’s almost unheard of. I think those fans still exist, even as new people joining, but we don’t notice them. They were always rare, but in the past, only people like that had the stamina to get over the barriers to entry and actually become the people who made zines or were willing to be visibly into fanfic in eras when that was seen as really weird. On top of that, there’s an element of me, us, judging the past by what’s left: only people with an intense and often single passion are visible because other people either drifted away or have seamlessly disappeared into some modern fandom. They don’t say they’re 80 or 60 or 40 instead of 20, so nobody knows.

In general, I’m a small fandoms and rare ships person. My brain will do its best to thwart me by liking whatever has no fic even in a big fic fandom... (Except BTS because there is literally fic for any combination of them, like even more than for the likes of MCU. Wow. Best fandom evar!) So I have an incentive to not get complacent and just stick with one fandom because I would very soon have no ability to be in fandom at all.

My appetite for Consuming All The Things has slowed way down, but it also goes in waves, and a lot of what I’m consuming is what I did back in 2000: journal articles and the limited range of English-language books on the history of m/m sex and romance in East Asia. It’s not so much that I have a million fandoms as that I’m watching a few shows as an expression of my interest in East Asian costume dramas and East Asian history generally.

I do like to sit with one thing and experience it deeply rather than moving on quickly, but the surface expression of this has changed depending on whether I’m more into writing fic or more into doing research or something else.

But yes, I do do a certain amount of trying to stay current, often as a part of research for fandom meta or to help other people know what’s going on. Having a sense of what’s big doesn’t automatically mean getting into all those things, but I think some fans who are older-in-fandom and/or older-in-years stop being open to even hearing what’s new. And if you’ve never heard of it, you’ll never know if you might have liked it.

Me, falling in love with Rise and seeing a meme-ful, trusting, excited and growing fandom:

Me now, still loving the show, but the fandom becoming full of suspicion and distrust, and people scared of drawing things or writing things:

Don’t get me wrong, I WILL NEVER STOP LOVING THE SHOW and I will NEVER stop making art and being apart of this community, but with artists having to literally take breaks from the fandom, and seeing people say things like “Now I psychoanalysis drawings of Donnie to see if the artist was h//ny while drawing it” and now the whole thing with people sexualizing them in their suits and it’s just so frustrating sometimes! It makes me almost sad! I was happy I was apart of a fandom that seemed to be trustworthy and truly funny and excited and albeit there were people here and there but overall it was a good place! Now it just feels wrong sometimes... scrolling through people’s art and going “oh this is so cute!” and liking it but then seeing that they drew/reblogged incest. Having friends stop talking to me out of fear of being called a pe//phile. And now I’M the one analyzing every drawing and post I see. Cute anime art style? Suspicious. Genderbend? Suspicious. Cross dressing? Suspicious. ANY drawing of Donnie? Suspicious. NOTHING IS SACRED! I want to have the same energy and encouragement I had but after someone (you know who) I really REALLY looked up- literally to the point some would call idolizing them- turned out to be drawing t/est I just feel scared reblogging from artists or drawing certain things. Showing that enthusiasm where I yell about how good it is in the tags just feels... off. I do trust most of you. I do still love this show and some of the people in this fandom. But the keyword there is some. I know there’s no community without the good. No rose without thorns, no good without bad. But JESUS CHRIST HOW HARD IS IT NOT TO SEXUALIZE MINORS OR SHIP INCEST??? Why does this need to be a problem!? Why do people have to GIVE STATEMENTS that they don’t support incest JUST TO BE APART OF A ZINE? This shouldn’t be a problem- BUT IT IS. And it really throws me through a loop. At this point, I myself am scared of drawing things in fear of people taking it out of context or being thrown off from my art.

I DO NOT SEXUALIZE MINORS NOR DO I INTEND TO.

thanks for tagging me @omgchyeahplease !!! nick ily <33 god i missed tag games so much 🥺 (i just got back from a month long on hiatus for future context)

Fandoms: on ao3 that’d be vld, tdp, ml, ghibli, and hq. i dont think im going to be writing anymore tdp, but ive been writing for the others (yes, even voltron aslkdfj) so they may or may not pop up again :^)

Where you post: just ao3! i technically have a wattpad..and theres a fic i wrote sitting there from when i was 13...but i dont plan on posting there ever again lol

Most popular one-shot: hits-wise, that’d be Unrequited, a lil piece i wrote because i was frustrated with how the vld writers were handling lance’s relationships lol. kudos-wise, it’s Finding Our Way, a backstory fic i wrote for amaya and gren from tdp for a secret santa. both are from 2018 so id love to see another one of my fics get more attention, but i do still like those two well enough!

Most popular multi-chapter: well..i supposed by default it’d be Sensations...it’s SUPPOSED to be a multichap,,but it still only has one chapter. it says 1/? so im counting it tho lol. maybe one day ill finish it :”D

Fic you were nervous to post: probably Ruins because i originally started it for a bang that i joined..didnt finish it on time..then got inspiration to finish it later and posted it separately :”D. i got MASSIVE guilt over that ohn god

How you choose your titles: i used very chaotically pick lyrics from meme songs exclusively LSDKJF but then i actually started thinking about story themes and through lines and just choose it based on that now lol

Do you outline: god i wish i did LOL maybe id be able to write a multichap for once in my life if i actually had a solid plot to follow. the closest thing to outlining that i do is ramble about my ideas to my friends and then make up shit as i go along

Do you take prompts: aha well i dont really use my socmeds for writing - but if i ever got followers for my writing maybe i would! i did once for the ml writers guild im in and i actually really enjoyed it

Complete: 16 full fanfictions (tiny oneshots)! posted that is. i have another complete one sitting around because its for a zine that hasnt been shipped out yet.

In Progress: i have one posted in progress multichap as i mentioned, and then...well..hm i mean i could count all the docs in my “current wips” google folder but who am i kidding LOL im only really actively working on like 4 of them rn. im really excited about my haikyuu wips but i wont say anything about them because if i do i might never finish any LOL
