I see you have done some really thoughtful metas. What're your thoughts on Nie Mingjue? IMO he's a lot more complicated than he's usually assumed to be...

One of my classic absurdly late ask responses! Glad you enjoy the meta.

I think NMJ occupies a fascinating place in the narrative, because his ultimate fate is inevitable despite the fact that he theoretically has more agency than most (all?) of the rest of the main cast.

For a start he becomes clan leader at a young age, and while that comes with its pressures it's undeniably an influential position. He's the leading general of the Sunshot Campaign. Then, after the Sunshot Campaign, the Nie and the Jin are by some margin the most powerful clans. So, in a political sense NMJ has immense power. In theory he has the ability to make far better choices. He could stop persecuting JGY, who literally has no choice but to follow his father's orders, and he could choose to focus his ire where it belongs: on JGS. And he could also choose to counter JGS in ways that don't push the jianghu back to the brink of another devastating war.

Except he can't make those choices. And I want to make a strong distinction here: he is not like other characters such as JGY or LXC or JC, whose choices are limited by their clear understanding of their own limitations and the political landscape (including but not limited to the fact that a post-Sunshot descent into war between the Nie and the Jin would be catastrophic). No. NMJ's choices are limited because by the end of the Sunshot Campaign his mental capacity is irreversibly compromised.

Not only is NMJ terminally ill, but we're given clear examples of contrast between NMJ early in Sunshot and NMJ late- and post-Sunshot. Pre-Sunshot NMJ understands the Wen have political and cultivation power that utterly outclasses him and his clan, so he stands by and tolerates their existence. He knows it would be suicide to go up against them, and it's only when the Wen cross a line and all the clans unite that he's able to actually do anything about the fact that WRH murdered his father.

Contrast that to NMJ by the end of Sunshot, so irrationally obsessed with JGY that he's willing to jeopardise the hard-won (and fragile) stability of the jianghu by trying to kill him. Reminder: when NMJ kicks JGY down the stairs, he starts to follow him down with the express intent of killing him. As in, he fully intends to murder the legitimate son of his main political rival and an immensely powerful clan leader on the steps of his own home. That is ludicrous. Pre-Sunshot NMJ wouldn't have done something like that for his own beloved father, let alone for a grudge.

All of NMJ's flaws are obvious from the earliest point of his timeline: he's proud, he's inflexible, he's righteous but he's hypocritical. But early on we see examples of NMJ bending a little, of recognising nuance and showing, in his own inelegant way, his compassionate side. By the end, that's gone. The fan-burning incident alone (the fantrum!) demonstrates it. That's the way he treats his beloved didi, never mind how he treats his san-di.

Of course the narrative claims JGY can always talk NMJ round, but it's simply not true. In the end, the only way JGY can preserve himself is by making NMJ a promise he can't keep (to deliver XY's head) in order to buy himself enough time for NMJ to die and no longer be an immediate mortal threat. If JGY had not accelerated NMJ's decline, NMJ would have killed him and plunged the jianghu into another needless conflict.

I've spilled ink on the staircase scene already so I'm holding back on digging into this in more detail, but the fact is any discussion of NMJ's downfall is inextricably tangled up with JGY. The focal point of NMJ's descent is his obsession with JGY in particular, and it's important to remember what's relevant is not so much what JGY has or hasn't done but how NMJ treats him.

I do think one of the best ways to put it in context is to compare the way NMJ reacts to WRH to the way he reacts to JGY. WRH literally kills NMJ's father but NMJ has a cool enough head to know he has to bide his time. JGY on the other hand absolutely does betray NMJ's trust, in a situation where, again, if he does as NMJ wants (turns himself in) he's going to end up dead. And from that moment on, NMJ has no intention of giving JGY the benefit of the doubt. Yes, after LXC intervenes (remember, JGY would be dead without that intervention!) NMJ backs off and ends up agreeing to the sworn brotherhood, but he enters into the brotherhood in entirely the wrong spirit, seeing it as a way to monitor and subjugate JGY, who is already answerable to his father over and above any obligations to an elder brother.

Would NMJ at fifteen years old have listened to LXC and JGY's explanations in Qishan or later on the stairs at Golden Carp Tower? Possibly. But we don't have any examples of a time when he truly listened to JGY, and he was always going to end up this way regardless, taken out by a qi deviation and turned into the stuff of nightmares. JGY accelerated an existing process to save his own skin, but he didn't invent it out of whole cloth. So the tragedy of NMJ is not what JGY did to him. It goes back further than that, to when his ancestors first started cultivating the resentful energy of beasts.

Even then, contrasting NMJ to another character is illuminating. The text tells us NHS is in a bind: if he cultivates with his sabre, he's dooming himself. But if he doesn't cultivate with his sabre, he's pissing off his ancestors. The instinct then is perhaps to think—poor NMJ! He's in the same bind!

But NMJ never has a moment's doubt about sabre cultivation. NMJ knows the price and he pays it without question. NMJ doesn't agonise about how to balance his duty to his clan and his ancestors against his desire to not go violently insane. He accepts it as a fact of life and never thinks to question it or push back against it. He marches down the path that extirpates all his good qualities and leads straight to his worst self, and never so much as glances around in the hope of sighting a different way.

Again we're getting to that tension I find most interesting about NMJ: agency rubbing shoulders with inevitability. NHS finds a way to lead his clan and Word of God become Xiandu without cultivating with his sabre. Does that mean NMJ is responsible for his choices and he can't be absolved of his actions by blaming his inheritance? I don't necessarily have an answer for that, but I hugely enjoy exploring the question.

this might be a touchy subject and you don’t have to answer but, as one myself, how would Yves act with a chronically ill/physically disabled person? or even someone who constantly deals with chronic pain that is debilitating for everyday life? btw i love your writing, no matter how cursed. 🤍

Yves feels his heart wrench whenever he sees you break down in tears, frustrated at yourself for not doing as well as other able-bodied people, frustrated that you have to surrender your autonomy at times to Yves. He truly does, he hates to see you in such a state. While he doesn't mind, even prefers you to be dependent on him due to his strong caregiver personality, Yves doesn't want it to be at the cost of your happiness.

He will read up on all the papers published about your illness or disability. Past and modern ones, there must be a pattern or some sort that he could identify. Yves will try his best to find a cure or at least something that will improve your symptoms greatly.

But the first thing he will get done is to talk to you. Discuss what you ultimately want; is it freedom you seek? His undying support? The unyielding truth that Yves will stay by your side no matter how bad it gets? Do you want to keep fighting for yourself, or do you want Yves to do it for you?

You will have the latest, cutting-edge prosthetics if you're struggling with an amputated limb or body part. All the helpful, relevant, accessible gadgets will be installed in the house in hopes of making your life much easier and giving back the level of independence you need to maintain your mental health. Yves will remember all your appointments for you, that fills his planners up. Your dosages, your medication, and the procedures of your treatments.

He will remind you, pre-pack your pills, and help you with your IV drip. Yves is very careful with his tone and words, he knows the stress, humiliation, and pain that come with living as a chronically ill person can easily set you off. Everything can be overwhelming, he does not want to see tears of anger or hopelessness in your eyes. It's not your fault, you never wanted this and it just happened to affect you.

Yves spends nights perusing through all experimental treatments, weighing between the risks and benefits. He will present his carefully curated selection to you, but he makes sure to pace it out appropriately. Because if he were to show you thousands of pages of medical reports, chances are you're going to be upset, overstimulated, and angry at him. You have very limited energy and focus, he needs to get his words as concise and accurate as possible.

Watching him kneel with you on the bathroom floor, as you experience your seventh vomiting tonight, truly shocked you. Understandably, you're in such a terrible state, that you've barely gotten any sleep for the past month. But Yves sleeps even less, he is always awake, always looking after you. Ready for any emergencies and constantly preparing items or foods that will ease you. Yet, he looks glowing, as if he wasn't caretaking a bleeding ball of misery. His hair is always silky and brushed, no bags under his eyes, and his movement is still crisp. And he always knows what to do, much better than you or your practitioners.

He knows your body well enough to administer his own dose of painkillers, going against doctors' orders and obtaining drugs that fully alleviate your pain. Strategically timing your doses so it won't be too hard on your liver. Taking your blood samples himself and ran them through his own trusted pathology lab, potentially proving that your doctor might have misdiagnosed you. Maybe you wouldn't need to suffer, Yves could find a cure.

You were very apprehensive at first when Yves suggested that he does his own testing. He has no credentials, why should you trust him? The doctors have much more experience than him and they went to school for this. You're not trusting a random to cut you open either, he's a mathematician, not a medical doctor or a surgeon-

You were dumbfounded when he produced his own certifications and licenses. Proving that he worked in hospitals, researched institutes, and even published his own medical papers that universities used as teaching material for decades. Everything he presented is legitimate, he even demonstrated the validity of them by your request. You could call his universities and they will all confirm his contributions, You can confirm with the government and the relevant boards, you can search for him anywhere, and early pictures of him will resurface.

He looked so different. Yves looked unremarkable in them with short hair. He looks unhappier and more exhausted, though. Makes you wonder how old he really is.

But that was all. You cannot find further information on Yves other than the ones he allows you to know about.

So you reluctantly let him stick a needle in you, only to realize that he's done. You blinked multiple times and darted your eyes from your arm and his gloved hands holding vials of blood. Unlike the usual nurses or doctors, you can't feel the needle going in or out. Yes, you saw it, but it was unbelievably fast.

Your jaw dropped as he didn't even need to palpate your arm. Yves just calmly inserted the syringe, gathered what he needed, and finished. You didn't experience any bruising later, which was astonishing with the speed he was working with.

He labeled them and packed them in a plastic bag with a biohazard symbol on it and into a padded envelope. Yves disposed of his gloves and washed his hands.

You expected him to enlighten you. Tell you stories while he was in the field, brag about his accomplishments, complain about difficult patients, anything! You needed to know more! Just who the hell is he?

But all he did was smile, give you a kiss on the forehead, and help you back to your room.

actual magical advice (*it's not about fire safety)

Ok I've had my fill of shitposting so here's something that might actually be helpful:

We all work in various ways of course, but I find that making permanent spell vessels and charging them when you need them is a really great way to deal with having too low time/space/energy to cast spells on an as-needed basis.

When I say a spell "vessel" I mean a physical object which is not destroyed in order to complete or activate a spell. So a candle which has to be burned down, a knot which has to be untied, etc., don't count for the type of thing I'm talking about right now.

The kinds of "vessels" I'm talking about are things like witch ladders, poppets, container spells (bags, boxes, jars, bottles, etc.), enchanted jewelry or figurines, manifestation boxes, and so on.

These objects don't have to look "witchy" at all and can easily be made stealthy.

In order to be useful time and time again, I find my own vessels tend to employ more general intent. For example, I might make a "vessel of ill-will" but I wouldn't make a "get Becky from accounting to suffer the consequences of her actions" vessel.

So there are limitations to this system - pre-making stuff for later use means that it's only going to cover generalities.

Another downfall to this method is if a person has really energy-intensive methods of charging, or if they're already struggling to accomplish manifestation due to issues properly gathering and applying energy.

The benefit for me is that my method of charging is very low-energy for me, so once I've spent the energy making the vessel, recharging it when it runs out of batteries is pretty simple. But if someone's personal charging method leaves them exhausted for a couple of days, the benefits to this system dwindle.

In addition, if someone's magical fatigue/difficulty manifesting has to do with not yet having figured out how to cast spells in a way that works for them, then of course this in and of itself won't fix anything.

All that being said, I do think there are lots of benefits to working this way, including:

having time to experiment with and develop spells for the future (as opposed to emergency casting on current situations),

being able to more rapidly respond to situations as they arise (not needing time to research/develop/cast an entire spell; just charging a vessel instead), and,

spell vessels accumulating greater power over longer periods of time that might be very difficult to achieve for one-off spells.

IMO the benefits list does get pretty long but also pretty specific, like, it's a great way to test your energy-raising and charging abilities because you're eliminating the variable of the vessel in your work.

And, you can still cast as many one-off spells as you want towards a goal while the long-term vessel is activated.

And, you can practice magic on lots of stuff that you're not actively dealing with right now.

And, you can get into experimenting with managing and caring for long-term magical objects, which in and of itself is a pool of knowledge. Stuff like that.

So anyway yeah if you're someone who struggles with figuring out how to employ more magic in your life start catching those spells like pokemon and leaving some of them in the PC until needed.

hiii! i just wanted to ask (bc im a broke bean rn) when you say pre-orders will close 4/15/24, does that mean the shop will too??? i was going to wait till next month when ill have extra $$$ to get a few things (i had my eyes on certain charms) but now im not sure if they will sell out... 😢 will there be a chance things can go out of stock??? i rlly hope not, but i understand if they do!!!

unless something comes up that makes me close my shop (like irl things or whatever) I plan on keeping it open indefinitely this time now that I have extra stock of a lotta items 👍

so the only thing closing are the preorders cuz that'll be when I order stock

for out of stock items, I'll be making orders of those in limited quantities when I order the preorder stuff after the closing date. so for example, I know my goromi card charms are out of stock so I'll order more of those mid april. so if there's something you got your eye on but it's out, then you can totally wait till I order more!

I don't really plan on retiring anything atm so I'll make sure I have stock of everything whenever I do reorders. I usually make merch orders every other month or so cuz I make custom standees n shit for my patrons so that's the schedule-ish

Epiphany, prologue;

Preface;

This is a story that will alternate between the points of view of Akaza, Riku, then Rengoku, in that order.

It is written in mostly freeform poetry.

This right here is a very serious warning that there will be A LOT of NSFW content, including but not limited to: gore, swearing, (borderline?) yandere, sexual themes, death, and a lot of angst. I will try to update tags as they fall into place.

This story is set to end after the infinity castle arc and I am going to try to follow the timeline loosely.

Every Rengoku chapter will be a glimpse into their past, so beware of time jumps on those chapters. I will attempt to label where we are in the story as points of views change with the chapters.

My goal is to write Rengoku chapters as if we are following their story from the beginning- pre Mugen Train incident, how their relationship came to even be in the first place, etc.

The chapters with Riku all deserve a warning in and of itself because that boy is crazy and would fight anyone who tried to take away his treasure. He is the reason the borderline yandere tag exists. I’m not even sure at this point in time how to write the character I’m dreaming up for him, so we will see how that goes as time moves.

Please do not judge me too harshly for inconsistency, I am mentally ill and things do not come quickly for me.

The only demand I desire to fulfill is my own.

All that I write I am creating for my own pleasure, but if someone out there enjoys even a chapter, then that's cool too. I like knowing that people enjoy my art. It makes me feel like I have a reason to be here.

So enjoy, or don't, but regardless, kindness is key. We are all alive trying to find our way.

Upcoming Verse: Demon Days..

Disclaimer: Though this verse is not Fandom required, it is not exempt from involvement within the h*zbin h*tel / h*lluva b*ss franchise. Anything pertaining to either series will be tagged accordingly for the consideration of others. If one needs it tagged in a different manner in order for their blacklist to actually catch, please let me know via ask or IMs. I absolutely have no qualms about assisting in making this a safe space for my mutuals.

General Information:

Name: Mu. He maintains no association with his earthly birth name as he hardly ever went by it when he was alive. He's admittedly never liked the ring of it in his ears when he slips into communicating out phrases set in the third person.

Cause of death: Cancer. A ill fated death for an individual who dedicated his livelihood to ridding his body of perceived filth and damage in order to achieve his idolized version of goodness and innocence. He'd battled his brain for years to form into perfection when instead it became disease ridden in an entirely different manner well before he was ready to call it quits.

Age at Death: Unknown. Perceived Age: Twenty. It is of no surprise that the soul within himself was molded to express how old he was when he was at the crossroads of experiencing too much life, even if the instances causing the overload were not great, and not at all on account of an impending pandemic set to enable his already agorphobic tendencies. It would be just like him to transfer from one plane of existence into another as a mirror image of himself at a state best described as colliding phases of the moon. Once again is he stuck in the patterns of an outdated way of life leading into one in which he's yet again lost without an instruction guide to the journey ahead. A completion of an intense life cycle that veers onto a road that's empty spare some obvious ongoing construction. One in which he'd describe as been in pre-pre-pre-development.

Introspective Information:

Disabilities and Mental Illnesses carried over from life into death: A generalized intellectual disability, Autism, and OCD. Limited speech capabilities are most prominent as he is utilizing the counting of his words as his only form of control in a new environment. All other conditions have slithered into dormancy as they pertain to trauma inflicted upon him as a human. The memories of them carried over, yes, however the impacts of them onto system were compartmentalized and tucked away when his arrival into Hell required his brain to have a greater focus on something in particular: survival. He's having to relearn how to manage his surroundings and personhood all over again. Only this time without any sort of parental figure to model how to get his needs and wants fulfilled from.

Likes: Knowing what the Hell is going on around here. Biting those who tread into his space without an indication of why they are there in the first place, or if they do not have information to satiate him with knowledge in exchange for a completely docile temperament. Petty mayhem. In his ignorance, and existing difficulties with comprehension, he finds himself having complications with understanding a need for a form of currency in any afterlife. Hence a bit of a problem with sticky fingers. Technically speaking, everywhere offers a five finger discount if he has the means to scurry away as undetected as he came in.

Dislikes: There are just TOO many tall people around him constantly. Things not going his way, or being the way he'd like them to be in terms of how he would have anticipated Hell to have been like prior to end having been met. It is the unnecessary cruelty behind everything that irks him; however, who else than himself can he really blame for his situation when it was his nosy behind that asked for damnation in the first place. He'd wanted to find out if it was as terrible and lonely as his peers on Earth had told him it would be when they warned him not only was he going to die alone, he was going to stay that way while all of his friends and family ascended into Heaven. His shaky uncertainty is of no fault of his own. That is what one gets for wanting to be the hand behind their own demise instead of allowing anyone else such an opportunity. Leave it to him to have brought fruition to the claims of others when he didn't even have to do such in the first place. For new, he'll never get to know what the maker truly had in store for him if he'd just left the choice to fate and assessment.

Appearance and Identity:

Height: 160cm / 5ft 3in. He has gotten his wish of always remaining small, but was it really worth it this time?

Gender: Male. He / him pronouns.

Sex: He's keeping this one a secret. Not that one would guess him to have anything different than the genitalia he had while he was alive, which were none other than a penis and buttocks, and yet.. He confirms nothing. Such stubborn is mainly a result of internalized insecurities over the impact of his condition of Kallmann Syndrome had on the development of his sexual characteristics as puberty took place. Frankly, there is no one to stop him from walking around with his hands in his pants for extra security measures. He has absolutely no qualms about looking completely weird as he adjusts to society.

Sexuality: More so undetermined more than unknown. The internal yearning for a connection with a man is still very much an integral and underlying aspect to his personhood, and yet he also couldn't put it past himself to join forces with a band of women if even just one was nice to him. An opportunistic bisexual with an innate and heavy male lean if one could call themselves such.

Occupation: Unemployed. Though the desire to find one is there, he is admittedly more so along the lines of waiting for someone to simply give him a job. An easy way out really. A place to live in without paying rent would also suit his needs very well. Being homeless in Hell has actually proven to be a very manageable problem in of itself. Nevertheless, his desire for the princess treatment clearly has stayed with him from life into death. Godspeed to the little buddy just as much as it is extended to the paths of those he crosses.

it's set in nsb days where his self destructive tendencies turn into a lack of self preservation during missions. which is totally a no-no cuz the nsb would like their best agent to yknow, Last. so hes ordered by the nsb to go therapy and hes THE MOST uncooperative patient ever cuz hes still in the stage of his character development where i doubt hes valuing himself as a person at all and probably very resistant to letting another person try to lead him towards examining Why and How to get better from that.

but in a more serious lens, just look at how luke argues with mc in his anniv 1 card. thats already After hes gone thru some development and he still has the tendency to argue for the side of not choosing him or his happiness. so if thats how he is after some chara development, i can only assume he was so much worse pre-chara dev. he'd be too scared to examine his fears and self-loathing, he'd be too on guard to show any kind of vulnerability, he'd still be hating himself too much to even allow himself to indulge in emotions

in my mind, i think he'd go stone cold raven mode in therapy. single word answers, doesnt talk unless prompted. and the therapist would tell him that this whole thing? it doesnt work unless he wants to get better, it wont work at all if he doesnt work with them.

"good," luke says. and he stays silent for the rest of the session.

the nsb thinks about lifting the therapy requirement since it's a waste to spend resources if luke wont budge

then luke gets his illness

and they lift the requirement immediately. they wanted luke to last, and it seems that wont happen even if he does get better mentally.

and even after my hope comes true and luke's illness gets a deus ex machina treatment that gives him a regular long non-depressing lifespan (IM HOLDING OUT FOR THE BEST HERE OK), i still think itd take a Lot for him to willingly go to therapy and work on his big huge baggages (plural, he has so many)

actually, after his illness no longer has him on a time limit, i think he'd struggle with something else thats very common among people who didnt think theyd live past a certain age: existential dread

because...

what now?

he'd spent his life before his 20s vaguely hating himself, spent his life once he got the illness Intensely Hating Himself so that he minimizes damage to the people he loves, and now hes got more time

to...what? hes got his life back, but he'd spent so much of it not caring about himself at all

im thinking that mc and the rest of the team would help him realize that hey, hes got more time now to actually, yknow, think about what he wants to do and actually do them. hes got time to indulge in things that make him happy, hes got time to do a Lot More Now and thats great. but the hesitation of committing to that would still be so, so ingrained that itd take a while. luke was so prepared to die, and he'll have to learn how to live

it'll be a clumsy, slow, stilted process.

but slowly, he'll get used to it. and one day he'll wake up and...the dread wont be gone. but it wont be as loud. it'll be soft enough that he can look forward to what the days ahead can bring.

Heyo momdad! I have a friend who mentioned to me they were thinking about starting grocery shopping only once a month, only they weren't sure how to approach it, and I feel like I remember you making a post about something similar... Do you happen to know the post I'm talking about?? Tyvm

hi dear! i can't remember a specific post, i'm afraid, but i did personally switch from weekly to monthly grocery shopping at the start of the pandemic to limit my exposure, and since then i've actually expanded it to more like once every six weeks or so. i can talk a bit about how and why that works for me.

the biggest issue is that i shop for both my mom and myself, and we're both chronically ill and both have some dietary issues that mean i need to do a portion of our shopping at whole foods. the nearest one is about 45 minutes away, so it makes the most sense for me to a do a big shopping day where i hit three stores (a texas chain called h-e-b, whole foods, and trader joe's) so i only have one major expenditure of energy and gas.

i hit three stores because a) they don't all have the same items, and b) h-e-b and trader joe's have a lot of stuff for way cheaper than whole foods. i have a generally shitty memory, but i'm actually very good at remembering what things cost at the different stores.

i'm not great at meal planning, but i know the general things that i want to keep in stock (admittedly, this only works because we have two fridges and an upright freezer) and i do extensive pre-shopping planning.

i have a list in my phone of what i frequently buy at each store, and i'll add to it when i need something infrequently bought and temporarily strike out what i don't need this trip. keeping a master list helps me not forget things. i also try to have the list written in the order at which i walk through the store, so i don't get to the last aisle and find an item i needed from the other side of the store.

before i go out, i check the h-e-b and whole foods apps, because h-e-b has coupons and whole foods has sales. i mark down in the list what's on sale/has a coupon, and plan around those savings if i can. (trader joe's doesn't have an app, sales, or coupons, but their prices are always low.) i also have a pre-shopping conference with my mom so everything she needs is included in my list.

when i depart, i bring as many coolers and ice packs as can fit in the car (really important, since we live in texas). it's still often difficult to keep everything cold, and i've had the very frustrating experience of buying meat, not realizing which bag it's in, and arriving home hours later to find the meat warm. for that reason i group my cold stuff together on the checkout belt and help bag to try and keep cold things together. i'll stick produce from the beginning of the trip in a cooler, then take it out towards the end of the trip if i need that space.

it takes hours, and by the time i get home and unload everything i am fucking wiped, but in the end it just makes more sense than doing it more frequently. we've gotten used to it and it works.

in between the Big Shopping Trip, we supplement with a few things on amazon subscribe and save, usually one smallish h-e-b curbside pickup for fresh produce and anything i forgot/they didn't have last time, and i also do a pickup from a co-op called azure standard every 2-4 months or so.

azure is super helpful if you try to buy organic, have special dietary needs, or just cook/bake enough that buying 25lbs of dry beans or 50lbs of flour would be useful for you. i can get things like oats, sugar, cheese, and apples for enough of a savings that it's worth the 9% transport fee and driving out to the drop-off site now and then. it's also nice to support a smallish business and smallish farms.

NOW, having said all that, doing all this obviously consumes a great deal of my brain capacity, so shopping like this certainly isn't possible or beneficial for everyone. i happen to have an aptitude for grocery shopping and cooking, so this is the majority of what i bring to the table in terms of, you know, keeping us alive and not as ill as we would be if we had shittier diets.

i wrote this all out in case some of its useful to someone, but hey, whatever works for you is what works for you. endure and survive. ✌

also i have a shopping tag with some more advice.

ETA: also in terms of like, how to not let things go bad: i shop with the intention to either eat things that quickly spoil in the week following the trip or else freeze them soon after getting home (meat, some veg), and leave things that will last longer for after the first week (sturdier veg, fruit like apples and citrus, yogurt, eggs).

milk freezes pretty well, but i've also found it more useful to, for example, use powdered buttermilk in my baking instead of worrying about having enough milk/not using it before it spoils. i also have some quarts of shelf-stable nondairy milk on hand.

it's a big learning curve to figure out what spoils too quickly, what lasts a long time, and what work-arounds you can find, but if you get creative it can work really well.

mele has a soft spot for striders !!! I’m a bit out of it rn but birds. she has a bunch of creatures she takes care of . but specifically she has 4 striders I care about

in order of pictures:

- elysium (swift forest strider)

- musette (swift shorestrider)

- juliet (swift lovebird)

& not pictured is dionisia, a swift springstrider! she also has a lovebird chick named mortis :) !!!!

she’s a hardcore sylvanas loyalist. for the most part. yes this is because she will support her wife but it’s… also because she has a lot of lost anger and sorrow with nowhere to go. her grief has a purpose if it’s to follow sylvanas. That said, mele… did not support burning teldrassil . mele is more of an internalised anger person rather than. actually doing something about it. in my genius mind, mele shows up to the scene moments after sylvanas has ordered the burning. also she gets hit with a misfired flaming cannonball or whatever and her right leg gets fucked right up.

she got locked up in torghast for a good while. she started there as a follower of sylvanas, but eventually. her faith was not strong enough. she was there for sylvanas, not for the jailer, not for the mawsworn, not for the end goal or whatever. during this time she got really attached to mawrats (one of the only comforts in the torment, as she could. actually speak with them. yannow) so she has a few mawrat friends . one of them is a little guy named morose. the others are named ennata and fleurdelice. OH and she befriended a. hound? one of those dog things. named elsinore

she’s a big fan of shitty romance novels. she has a collection stored that maintains even into undeath. she’s the kind of person to read them on the train

mele lost their right eye to their parent, tandelin. she’s a paladin, a high ranking member of the silvermoon guard and the world’s most insufferable woman. mele and her meet again following mele becoming undead, and as tandelin absolutely despises the undead, she basically disowned mele (and eventually mele’s undead siblings) and as a ‘parting gift’ basically burnt mele’s eye with light.

she’s really close w most of the other dark rangers!! in my heart they all sleep in a pile like those artworks of sylvanas with a crowd of dark rangers. it’s real to me. idgaf if undead sleep or not. they do now . she does have a best friend but I am super out of it and I forgot the name .

mele was the head veterinarian & beastmaster of the farstriders in quel’thalas. idrc if that’s a thing or not it is now. but yeah ! they are as comfortable with a bow as they are with a scalpel. also random but mele wore their hair in a bun a lot pre-death and I felt I should mention it. love that bitch

realised I haven’t used a fact here to say publicly that mele has the innate ability to speak with animals — the exact limitations of this is unclear as I’m too chronically ill to give enough of a fuck to go lay out the parameters. but also because who cares. anyway, they have been able to do so from birth and I’m still workshopping the exact reason why. this is also why her and Merithra met originally. and why she rose the ranks so quickly. she didn’t realise it was a weird thing that she could do as a child! so when she got older and was like. having full conversations with the hawkstriders the handlers were very ????

her and sylvanas are engaged. IDGAF!!! they were GOING to get married but then arthas did his epic gamer routine and. well. but I call them wives anyway because I can. peace and love. they met as kids and grew up together !! mele was also close friends with alleria and vereesa. the windrunner family and the morrowmourns WERE super close (like, hosting dinners for each other close) but eventually tandelin got so fucking insufferable that it mostly became the morrowmourn kids & the windrunner kids hanging out.

she wields thas’dorah simply because I say so. I really fucking hate the entire turalyon alleria bullshit with the lightforged draenei soooooooooooooooo I can justify in some weird ass way having mele wield thas’dorah . also her and alleria were tight as hell who cares. she also does have rae’shalare buuuuuuuut I imagine it’s like. idk I can do some splitting one bow in half bullshit with sylvanas and mele right. idgaf. also I do have the windrunner bow from the end time dungeon in mele’s bags so. prob that too. I’m working on getting the windrunner crossbow from ICC (can you tell I have autism)

merithra and her ARE MARRIED they GET MARRIED DURING 10.2 STORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it’s very sweet. it is until tandelin and vellis (parents) show up at amirdrassil to attempt to welcome mele back into the family after her success ….. & literally marrying a dragon aspect. mele is NOT a fan and cracks it at them which is cool. catharsis moment lets go

he is a nickname guy. he will give people nicknames. the most notable one is "inky" for azul. she started calling him it post-overblot because it made him uncomfortable in an entertaining way. for mc / yuu she'll call them "small-fry" / "zako" because. well. its condescending. also in jpn it's apparently slang for "weak / useless person" or "mob character" LMFAO. "fry" / "chigyo" is how he addresses people that he doesn't care about (mostly other students from different dorms) and he often calls other dorms "chigyochi" (rough translation would be. Breeding ground?? but in official eng it would probably be something like Hatchery i guess. to remove the Implications LOL). she also likes to call specifically freshmen "freshwaters" / "tansugiyo" because. coming from the coral sea as a saltwater mer. the Peak of insult is implying you're a freshwater fish who can't survive the salt or the cold. basically calling all these freshmen weak as fuck

he's so terrified of sebek its so funny. its like an irrational fear of him too. cyrus just wants to Sprint Away as fast as she can when she hears sebeks voice because sebek reminds her of a crocodile. incredibly hilarious considering sebek is a whole freshman and cyrus is a whole junior and they're from completely different dorms so there's like. So little chance of them interacting

she HATES the nrc birthday tradition of the "gift of good fortune" (aka getting cake thrown in her face) because her least favorite food is whipped cream. he honestly just hates cake in general and hates the idea of cake being thrown at him (in reference to the scene in the little mermaid where vanessa stumbles into the wedding cake bc the sealife is attacking her LMFAO). she's not even a good sport about it bc shes immediately trying to run away. her birthday presenter (its cater btw. if u even care) has to literally hold her down kicking and screaming.

marron:

his worst subject is alchemy. things can and do often blow up in his face... even if that wasn't originally possible for whatever he was making to do. pre-overblot, this is mostly obscured by how he's able to maneuver his lab partners into doing most of the work for him. post-overblot, it's so obvious that it's his weakest subject that crewel immediately puts him in remedial lessons and he's so embarrassed about it. will get snappish and defensive if anyone presses him on it because he hates feeling like he's being criticized

he has a favors gambit running in the freshmen classes. if you picked any random freshman student out of the crowd at nrc... 9 times out of 10 they'll owe marron a favor. it's a lot less formal and definitely a lot less intimidating than azul's contract system, but that's part of what makes it work-- the people indebted to marron are pretty much unaware of their debt until they step out of line and face consequences they weren't anticipating at All.

his brother had connections to a security company named Cloak&Dagger. it has connections to S.T.Y.X. in that it sells information on overblotters to the organization but it also more generally keeps tabs on the influential people of the world (like the royal family). marron uses this connection to cultivate a horrifyingly wide information network. he does have all the personal data on ur phone btw. he knows everything you looked up on wikipedia. he's side-eyeing you for spending that long on sigmund freud's page.

jettie:

the youngest in a family of six. his three siblings, all guys, are older than him-- around college/workforce age. in order from youngest to oldest they are buddy, moore, and ramer (all respectively based off chum, anchor, and bruce from finding nemo). they're a lot more friendly than jettie. also a lot bigger. jetties kind of the runt so hes more aggressive to compensate. they love him anyways <3

his family run a bodyguard business. it's a little ominous. his other three siblings are kind of iffy on continuing it because it's shady as fuck but jettie is READY to take over the business when his father nimius (twisted off of glut from the little mermaid 1) gives him the opportunity or 2) kicks the bucket.

he keeps all his baby teeth in a jar. actually all of his teeth that fall out. he bites a lot of things he shouldn't so this is more common than you think. did you know sharks have a neverending supply of regenerating teeth? isn't that horrifying? well its a trait jettie has and yes it is more horrifying when he's in his human form. he brings out the jar of teeth when he wants to fuck with someone

i do try my hand at writing but i feel like everything is too skewed to the reader’s perspective in the story. how do you balance out making sure the character’s voice comes through even when it’s not written from their pov? i’m sure it’s a matter of characterization? but also how can you include the details of how they move and think without it being confusing for the person reading :((( (i hope i make sense and i’m so sorry if i don’t)

ur okay!!! it's okay!!!

it sounds like you've decided to write the story from the readers perspective which means that you are going to be naturally limited in the other characters viewpoint. so i assume ur question is how do i potray the other character if the story is not from their point of view.

you are right in that it's a matter of characterization! when you're writing from a limited p.o.v (most povs unless you're writing in omniscent third p.o.v) then you have to filter the story and actions through the lens of the p.o.v you are writing from.

i think it might be easier to demonstrate w examples so ill try my best.

ill set up a scenario and write both perspectives. the scenario: two people getting icecream together.

ill use you (as in reader) as character one and megumi as character two)

READERS PERSPECTIVE:

You feel Megumi wait behind you while you think on your order. You decide on a cone with two scoops of rocky road then shuffle towards the other end of the line. The employee hands it to you over the display with a smile. While Megumi's pre-occupied choosing, you offer up your card and tell the cashier to keep it and pay for his order too. You feel guilty since you know he wants to pay, but you're always inclined to spoiling him.

MEGUMIS PERSPECTIVE:

Megumi waits behind you while you order, peering over your shoulder to see whats in front of you. He doesn't quite hear what you get, and by the time he's paying attention - it's already his turn to order. He glances at you at the cash register than back at the display. He doesn't know what he wants, but he figures he should hurry up and decide. He's supposed to treat you to something since he owes you, but knowing you - he might not get the chance if he's too slow.

in the above - these two are in the exact same scenario. you can surmise based on the paragraph that they've spent time together more than once.

but the perspectives are different. reader is able to order comfortably and takes advantage of megumi being lost in thought.

and megumi is somewhat self-aware but still indecisive of his ice cream order.

you can determine that reader is something of a clever character from their paragraph. maybe warm or empathetic because they notice the employees smile above other things.

you can interpret megumis spacing out as being nervous or being comfortable depending on what type of scenario you wish to write. despite hanging out he feels like he owes you, which means he has a hard time accepting things from you - another bit of characterization.

what's happening in both paragraphs however is that both parties are interpreting the other character from their own perspectives with the knowledge they have of each other. megumi is able to correctly guess reader will pay and vice versa - despite no verbal communication between them.

thats the point i want to highlight. you, as the author, know the intentions of both characters but you're writing from one perspective. you have to filter actions through what character you are writing and this can vary pretty heavily but that's completely normal and fine.

if you're writing this from readers perspective - it's inevitable that a lot of the work is about their internal dialogue. to show your other character - you'll have to do it through actions / dialogue and write it filtered through your characters mind.

characterization comes in there. what actions does your other character take to express themselves and in what way can those actions be taken? are they cut and dry? or frivolous and vague? and in turn how does your reader see those actions and how do they feel about them? do they confront your character if they dislike them or seethe silently? this part is up to you and it's hard!!!!!! it takes a while to get right.

i would recommend reading if its something you really can't get past! (and in general, reading will help u improve) but not for enjoyment. with intention to like study. try to read a story critically and notice how a character talks to the other and how they interact. its a bit complicated to explain but i hope the side by side makes it less hard dskjdslk

If you can get your head around emails going to several different people around the world all at the same moment or a group text sent out by one person to a dozen recipients then you should be able to realize that’s how powerful prayers and healing can be as well. I’ve seen this incredible power of prayer/fishing do wonders and change those that never knew we were even praying or fishing for them. No I am not worried about karma or making life path changes on them unless they’ve asked. It’s more like a gentle breeze, butterflies and kittens energy of prayer. Gentle, loving, kind and yet powerful nonetheless. Please know that all of this energetic fishing makes a difference or I would not even bother doing it. I have seen what it has done and folks have bandied about the word miracle more than once. Know that as fast as an ailment or negative event came upon you that it can be resolved or dispelled just as fast! Keep the faith out there and remain persistent in your quest of love and life emprovement finding you! Thanks again to everyone for the birthday wishes. Folks would ask what I was doing. I would joke with them, “I’m going to see a Monster truck competition in Tampa Florida with no ear plugs”.
