My Haircare Routine

Brush every day with the Crown Affair No. 3 brush (at least 2-3 times a day from root to tip)

Shampoo and condition my hair daily with the Aussie Miracle Moist Shampoo & Conditioner with Avocado & Jojoba Oil (shampoo only on the scalp and conditioner only from the section from the bottom of the ear lobes to the ends)

Comb through wet hair with the Act + Acre Detangling Comb, apply Don't Despair, Repair! Split End Repair + Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner, and wrap it in the Crown Affair The Towel to dry for around 10 minutes

Apply the Briogeo Farewell Frizz Blow Dry Perfection Heat Protectant Cream on the ponytail portion of my hair, and blow dry it with a Conair 1875 Watt Hair Dryer and the Dry Bar Full Pint Medium Ceramic Thermal Round Hair Brush 

Finish the blowout by brushing my hair through with the Crown Affair No. 3 brush and Bumble & Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil UV Protective Dry Oil Finishing Spray

Haircare Extras:

IGK FIRST CLASS Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo works wonders for times my hair needs a pick-me-up or I don't have the time to wash it

I use Briogeo Don't Despair Repair Rice Water Protein + Moisture Strengthening Treatment and R + Co Hair Mask 1-2 times a month (usually in the winter/dry or cold months more often, please follow the directions if you try the treatment!)

In the summer, I'll sometimes use the R + Co Mood Swing Straightening Spray before blowdrying to prevent frizziness or random wavy pieces from ruining the sleek look

These hair ties from Amazon are my holy grail (only $7 for 100 hair ties!), and they come in a portable ziplock bag

if your hair is in major need of some TLC from itchy scalp or build-up, the Act + Acre BHA Salicylic Acid Scalp Exfoliator is the perfect reset to recover from using incompatible products on your hair or recovering from extreme weather conditions, styling, or coloring

For reference: I have thick, mostly straight, and untreated (not colored, all natural) hair. I get my hair cut around 3 times a year with long layers down to around 1-2 inches below my shoulders with face-framing layers. My stylist says that my hair is always in perfect condition with no split ends in-between visits, so this routine plus a healthy, plant-based diet seems to be doing the trick!

how do you manage your style when its really hot outside?

this is such a fun question!! i don't do well with heat at all, so i have a bunch of suggestions for wearing lolita when it's hot and humid.. some of which may be a bit obvious, but hopefully they'll be of some help for you!

i'll include my full answer under this "read more" cut because i think it'll get a bit lengthy.

choosing your outfit

as for your clothes, avoid fabrics and materials like polyester and velveteen when the weather is hot. polyester tends to trap heat underneath it, and velveteen is far too thick and heavy. it's better to opt for breathable cotton and thinner materials like chiffon. i especially recommend cotton bloomers.

short sleeve blouses, cutsews, tank tops, or short sleeve OP are better for keeping cool. many people are against the "blouseless/showing shoulders" rule, but it's more of a guideline.. if you're not throwing every guideline out the window at once, it still reads as lolita.. especially when the weather is extreme and permits it! a JSK without a blouse could definitely work and look great when coorded mindfully. i personally find that JSK with detailed straps and a babydoll cut look the best if you intend on going blouseless.

a more layered petticoat is a lot hotter and stuffier in the heat, a more casual poof will keep you cooler.. though a hoopskirt will be best for avoiding contact with your skin (not a fan of these personally, but they do work!)

ankle socks and UTK will be a lot more manageable than OTK. you could even ditch socks altogether if you have a good pair of sandals that suit your coord!

if you have thick or long hair, it'll always be better to style it by putting it up instead of leaving it down. you should plan this accordingly for the type of style you're going for. for example, twin tails tend to be cute for sweet and sometimes old school substyles, while updo hairstyles would suit classic more.

planning your day

i recommend planning your day around a place indoors that will have AC, and also finding transportation with it.

absolutely limit your walking! walking a few blocks is fine, but if you're doing more than a minimal amount of walking you should definitely be taking breaks in between.

before leaving the house

sunscreen!! protect your skin from the sun, don't forget your hands, face and neck.

absolutely don't skip deodorant if you're someone who sweats!!

if you have hair that doesn't do well in the humidity, use anti frizz products. if your hair gets messy, falls apart, and doesn't hold a style.. use a hair styling stick!! i can't recommend this enough for those who have bangs. doesn't have to be these products exactly, these are just what i use.

i apply one pump of olaplex on the ends of my hair (like the bottom 7 inches of it or so) while it's wet and gently massage it in. i spray the IGK good behavior spray all over very generously, but especially around my bangs and the roots of my hair. once my hair is dry and styled, i spray a bit of hair spray and lightly brush through. to completely set it, i apply this &honey matomake stick to my bangs (brush through like it's mascara) you can use a lot, it doesn't make them oily at all.. totally makes them stay in place for a long time. if you have very unruly bangs, i suggest using it on the underside of your bangs as well.

if you wear makeup, be sure that you're prepping your skin properly beforehand with skincare suited to your skin type and a good summer proof primer and setting it after with a reliable setting spray. opt for waterproof products if you sweat often!

things to carry with you

if you're going to be in the sun, a parasol will help out tremendously. make sure it's one with a UV cut effect for the best results. my go to one is the "frill millefeuille umbrella" by angelic pretty!

always take water with you!! be sure that you're drinking often.

i take a foldable fan with me. you just charge it overnight with a USB and throw it in your purse when it's time to go. it also doubles as a charging battery for your phone and a flashlight! looks small and wimpy but it has two settings and the more powerful one definitely makes a difference.

touch ups

a big part about going out in the heat wearing lolita is upkeep and touch ups, especially if you're going to be out of the house for a long time. personally, i carry around these items.. but you should of course tailor this to exclude products you don't think you'll need, everyone's different!

a mirror travel size mini dry shampoo (great for extra long days in the heat, especially if your bangs tend to get oily quick, while the rest of your hair doesn't) foldable comb (bang touch ups) blotting sheets (i have combination skin and my T zone gets oily quite fast in the summer. amazing for your forehead, since it's touching your bangs and could be making them oily quicker) compact powder puff (makeup touch ups)

Would you mind sharing some information about your healthy hair journey

I would love to!! For reference I have type 2b wavy, fine, high density hair and it didn’t get healthy until I started treating it like textured hair instead of straight hair. So these tips will be for wavy hair. If your hair doesn’t dry straight or if it has any kind of frizz then you also have textured hair and textured hair is going to be either curly or wavy depending on how tight your hair curl pattern is. Also the best resource for this stuff I’ve found is @manesbymell on YouTube and Instagram and a lot of the stuff I’m putting here I’m just regurgitating from what I learned from her haha. She’s a hair stylist who specializes in curly hair and talks about the science behind hair care and it’s super informative.

My Routine:

1. Shampoo and Conditioner (I wash my hair every two days haha like two days in between)

Currently using Verb Hydrating shampoo and conditioner and I like it just fine

Others I like: Verb Volumizing, IGK Hot Girl (this is my all time fave but I think it’s discontinued Design.Me Volumizing (puff me the pink one) is amazing actually

I also use a clarifying shampoo every once in a while when my hair starts to feel heavy and stuff is building up (when I lived in Utah where I had hard water I would use the Kristen Ess clarifying shampoo that is for metals and chlorine) the Ouai one is good too but more expensive

2. Apply Leave in Conditioner to towel dried hair I honestly don’t actually towel dry it I just squeeze out the excess in the shower so it isn’t dripping but it is still WET

Currently using the Kristen Ess Weightless Detangling Leave in Conditioner I don’t know the real name haha but it’s at target my other favorite leave in conditioner is the verb hydrating one and olaplex #6 the olaplex is expensive but you honestly need the smallest amount it’ll last you forever and it heals the bonds of your hair

I brush that through with a tangle teaser and part my hair to make sure it’s fully distributed then I apply

3. Product that provides hold. I usually use a combo of a mousse and hairspray or a gel and hairspray or curl cream and hairspray. Since my hair is wavy rather than curly the hairspray helps add more texture and hold and just helps the wave pattern last longer.

I love the design.me puff me Volumizing mousse it lasts forever and smells amazing. But if you want something cheaper then I would reccommend umberto giannini (you can get it from the company on amazon) if your curls are tighter then you’ll want to use a heavier product like a curl cream and a gel. The verb mousse gel is really nice too. And the verb curl cream. You can also use the olaplex 6 as a curl cream and leave in in one.

4. Then style

I brush that through with a tangle teaser again and then I will either scrunch it or put it up in a towel or just leave it haha if I am styling it I will usually scrunch and diffuse it otherwise I’ll let it air dry but only if I don’t use too heavy of products like a curl cream because leaving your hair wet for long periods of time is actually more damaging than heat because you can use a heat protectant. Basically both water and heat break hydrogen bonds which are the bonds holding your hair style in place and both damage your hair. Once it’s dry I apply an oil to scrunch out any crunch that is left over from the product cast if I used a gel and lock in moisture.

Other things I find important:

1. Your hair isn’t going to look amazing at first. There’s going to be a period of awkwardness as the less healthy parts grow out

2. Bond builder/repair products are a key if your hair is already damaged. Olaplex is the holy grail but lots of products have their own version. If you bleach your hair go to a professional who uses olaplex or the matrix bond builder in the bleach.

3. If you’re going to splurge anywhere do it on your shampoo and conditioner. Styling products can be drugstore but a good shampoo and conditioner are going to set you up for success and good products aren’t going to be able to help a bad shampoo as much.

4. Don’t brush your hair dry and don’t brush it without product in it
