anyway Im just thankful that ive gone from "thinking their name accidentally is a blasphemous transgression" to. i mean. i would say something about how Leviathan & Storm Mom and I can literally just talk shit out like hey did you mean this in a bad way? No? ok. or talk about how we can poke and prod each other. or about how i finally feel like im not a burden despite all my issues having just left a fucking cult. but like the progression can be symbolically summarised in Leviathan being like "yeah you can call me Lev online you've earned that" last night

Q Fever
Aka, Query fever. What a weird name for a disease. Imagine telling people that's what you got.
Tumblr media
in the 30s-40s, an Australian pathologist in QLD/Brisbane, came across an outbreak of the same or similar illness among abbatoir or slaughterhouse workers.
At the time, he called the disease "Q" fever or query as a temporary name until the pathogen could be identified. Unfortunately it stuck.
decades later, now nobel prize winner and virologist, MacFarlane Burnett isolated and identified the microbe responsible. I think this discovery contributed to his prize. i forget already.
Microbe responsible: Coxiella burnetti. Named for Burnett and HR Cox, the American bacteriologist who found the genus Coxiella where C burnetti falls under.
Initially they felt it was related to Rickettsia, responsible for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, but as science progressed, this was disproven.
Now for a Case Report
A 55 yo Italian man with a history of aortic valve replacement was diagnosed with pyrexia of unknown origin twice. Further signs included myalgias/splenomegaly/night sweats. The 2nd time he was admitted for PUO he deteriorated rather dramatically and was put on meropenem and teicoplanin.
A host of organisms was tested for on serological testing based on the man's travel and epidemiological history, all negative. Even a rheumatological panel was done, also less revealing. He also had a history of MGUS (a haem disoder), which is kind of a red herring here.
Cultures were negative, no vegetations were seen on a TTE - so they did consider IE. Which is an important differential for PUO.
Eventually a PET-CT was done (often favoured when investigations do not yield much for a sick patient with fevers), finally revealing a focus of infectious on his ascending aorta, where he'd also had previous surgery done. And in a round about way, they also further identified Coxiella Burnetti. He was treated doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine. As it's so rare in Italy, it wasn't really considered even though he mentioned rural travel.
Bottomline: Q Fever is an important consideration in the work up for culture negative IE. Further to this, always consider IE in the differentials for PUO particularly if they're at increased risk for IE (prosthetic valves, damaged valves, select congenital heart issues, previous IE). IE can present with night sweats, fevers, weight loss and splenomegaly. It can be insidious and chronic in nature. other risk factors can be more suggestive as we'll get into below.
Causative organism
Coxiella burnetti, it's a zoonoses - i.e. transmissible from animals. Special powers: very tough/hardy, can survive extreme environments (high temps and UV light etc.) over prolonged periods and is resistant to many common disinfectants/surface cleaners.
It's an intracellular pathogen and gram negative coccobacilli (PINK!)
name coccobaccili reminds me of cocopuffs.
Tumblr media
it's mainly associated with farm animals, which the CDC so wholesomely displays on its website on Q fever (wtf).
Tumblr media
goats, sheep, cattle typically (but many other animals, even birds, dogs and horses can be reservoirs)
in particular bodily fluids - amniotic fluid, placenta, faeces/urine, milk etc.
you can get it through unpasteurized milk and through inhaling it if it lands on dust in the area
ever visit a farm or petting zoo lately? OMG WASH YOU HANDS.
Tumblr media
That said, it's typically inhaled in inorganic dust. You inhale it, it goes to the lungs, and then the bloodstream.
Increased risk for Coxiella burnetti (What to take on history of exposures and when to strongly consider it)
live on a farm or near one
exposure to a farm
work as a vet on a farm
farm worker, dairy workers, researchers on these animals/facilities
slaughterhouse/abbatoir
Also from CDC:
Tumblr media
Clinical presentation
Most won't get sick after exposure and remain asymptomatic, a very small minority does. even though it is highly infectious.
incubation time is 2-3 weeks (consider this time in your history of exposure, did they work on the farm 2-3 weeks ago as opposed to yesterday).
Nonspecific acute infectious symptoms:
nonspecific systemic fevers/malaise/arthralgias/myalgias--> key is high fevers though and can be associated with headache and photophobia.
non specific GI - N/V/diarrhoea
respiratory ones - SOB or cough, consider it as atypical cause of community acquired pneumonia.
rare: hepatitis and jaundice (granulomatous) or encephalitis with neurological complications such as demyelinating disease or CN palsies, also haemolytic anaemia and HLH (yikes)
Tumblr media
really it's the history of exposure that will lead you down the garden path to Q fever.
Chronic Q fever is perhaps worse, and can present as culture negative IE/PUO. Months/years later, as B symptoms as above above + LOW/LOA, night sweats. More likely to occur if you are predisposed for IE as above, have a weakened immune system for any reason, including pregnancy.
Chronic Q fever has a mortality of 10% if left untreated. About <5% of those with acute Q fever develop this if left untreated. Speculation is that it's more of an autoimmune process or abnormal immunological response to the bacteria.
To be honest, most who walk in the door with community acquired pneumonia get treated empirically for atypicals anyway, (standard course of doxycycline), so we hardly really ponder the question of Q fever in every patient. But if they present chronically and did not have atypical cover at the onset of acute symptoms, then it's something important to consider.
Other important conditions - can cause complications in pregnant women and 20% will get post Q fever syndrome. like chronic fatigue.
investigations
Serology! nice and easy. Look for IgG antibodies in the chronic presentation. Or PCR. Down side to serology - can take 2-3 days for the body to make said antibodies to the bacteria for detection. PCR can be done on any fluids/tissue sent.
Tumblr media
Cultures useless, hence it fall under the umbrella of culture negative (hard to grow outside a host cell, it is an obligate intracellular pathogen).
Other hints on bloods (as serology/PCR takes time to return) - elevated or low platelet's, transaminitis with normal bili, opacities in CXR with hilar lymphadenopathy, CSF will show raised protein levels if done when encephalitis is suspected.
imaging can also support the diagnosis.. as illustrated by the case report.
Treatment
Acute disease - as standard for atypical bugs, doxycycline 100 mg BD for 14 days. Alternatives - TMP SMX or Clarithromycin.
Chronic Q fever or IE:
native valves: doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine (200 TDS) for 18 months
prosthetic: same but 24 months
why hydroxy: enhances the action of doxycycline (increases the pH of the phagolysosome)
Follow-up: look for 4 fold decrease in IGG

Gerry is literally such an interesting character though. I feel like because I joke about him all the time I don’t talk about how compelling I find him and also none of the rest of the fandom really delve into him either which is a shame because they made him such an interesting exploration of privilege, repression, immigrant identity, the Australian dream etc etc etc.
Like he’s kind of selfish, he buries his head in the sand and makes himself wilfully ignorant to bad things happening around him (from the bicentennial protests he’d definitely be extremely aware of to Dale’s mental breakdown in 2x05 to minimising the consequences of his own arrest), he’s so outwardly cool and collected that even the audience doesn’t realise how much he lives in denial.
And part of his continued denial is because he’s the rare immigrant who did actually achieve the Australian dream; he has fame and money, a loving family, a loyal fan base, a big house in Eaglemont. The cracks are beginning to show, the tabloids know about his sexuality and he knows he’s doomed if people find out. But Australia gave him everything he was promised, and compared to what Ireland looked like in the 80s, his new home gives him so much more freedom that he never had in a country that was still under the thrall of Catholic conservatism. And of course he’s not thinking about the fact he’s gotten everything he has because he’s white, and the right kind of white, and in fact, the right kind of Irish (ie not Northern. A Northern Irishman isn’t going to have the worst time in 80s Australia, but his identity is going to be far more politicised than someone from the Republic).
We talk about Dale and repression a lot. Because it’s really obvious. He’s repressing what are ultimately positive feelings - pleasure, passion, sexual desire. And we want him to experience queer joy the same way Gerry does. But Gerry is repressed as well. He’s repressing all of the negatives. He finds pain, controversy, anguish, etc, shameful and dirty the same way Dale does with desire. He doesn’t want to admit that the Australian dream is a lie, that he is extremely lucky and that all that he has could crumble at any moment.
There is so much that compels me about Gerry and makes him my favourite beyond “haha Funny Irished Man played by sexy actor” and I never talk about it because I don’t know how and no one else seems to fixate on him like I do. But like. Talk to me about Gerry please please PLEASE.

i still dont get the racial politics of this show if a character calls another character an imp sometimes is a neutral descriptor (ie “oh that orc” or “my elf friend” in a dnd context) and other times it seems like just saying imp is a slur? and even the imps say stuff like “succubitch” and slut shame the succubi, is that a common thing or is that just bc blitzo is bitter? and thats not even getting into millie being racist against hellhounds?
I know…what is it about?
Millies “dehumanising” of Loona is very under focused, but is stated by Loona and blitz to be bad. “I’m not just his hellhound” “yeah, she’s my daughter” And yeah it seems like Blitz hates succubi because of Verosika. I’m more excited to see their episode than much else. Who gives a shit about stolas story number what, six??? Even Blitzø hasn’t had an episode star entirely on him, maybe Ozzies??isn’t that crazy???
Why code your characters to have races and ethnicities, Black Hispanic Italian Australian French latino etc etc? And almost accurately depict their struggles with racism, but then kiss the monarchies ass? The one you established as being bad? And use your characters of colour to shill that one crying white boy?
The social classes suffer from real in universe racism that is largely based on coded human racism. For example the sloth ring pharmacy conversation. They then play it for laughs half the time but take it seriously the other half of the time.???
And isn’t it funny how for example Moxxie, he kills people as part of his job. He kills other imps if his job requires.
But using a holy weapon to kill demon royalty like Stolas?? Gasp!! Unthinkable. For some reason blitz rejects the idea too. But why? Why are overlords and royals’ lives worth more?
But why? Moxxie has taken lives across the board, he’s an assassin himself. Why is it so bad and evil for striker to be an assassin? Is stolas really that much superior to others in Moxxies eyes?
I stick to stolas because it really seems like Moxxie agrees with the hierarchy now, when before, he said “oh are we so evil for wanting a selfish greedy authoritarian capitalist to keel over dead?” But then, he starts doing what Cherubs did!!! Protecting his life!!
Throughout, he is: cowering to stolas, following his commands, trying to reason with him and talk him down when he’s enraged “they caught us off guard your highness” and has seen him many times attacking Blitz. Screaming at him as if he’s a child so beneath him. He has seen firsthand how terrified Blitzø and arguably more importantly, Millie, are of him. Yet he calls him “your highness” constantly looks after him, is scared when he’s hurt, and basically saves him at the harm and risk to his and Millie’s own lives over and over again, and MnM feel so much sympathy and empathy for this man, but why?
Knowing as well that Moxxie is a victim of abuse by an authoritative figure, and Fizz is as well, yet they’re both so defensive of Stolas, who they don’t know, and who is another abusive authoritative figure, for no reason, It’s just weird.

A different anon but as someone deeply fascinated by Esteban Ocon and the redbull musical chairs here are some extra notes:
Estie bestie is currently at Alpine formerly Renault since 2020. And back in 2018 (ie when he was in Racing Point) there were rumors linking him to the Renault seat Daniel would take in 2019 so that’s possibly why his and Lances friendship survived
Unrelated but Alpine/Renault is currently the Frenchest team to ever French. It is (or at least was) partly owned by the French government through their stake in Renault (Alpine got renamed cause Alpine is the sports car brand of Renault. Not that they make any sports cars I believe they made maybe one in 2017). The current two Alpine drivers are the aforementioned Estie bestie and Pierre Gasly (both French. Also childhood friends to enemies to they have to tolerate each other now) and while their current reserve driver is an Australian, he will hopefully for his own good take a page out of his countryman’s Oscar Piastris book and hightail it out of there for his own good. The most likely replacement for him would be Victor Martins. Also French. The Alpine factories are in Enstone (UK) and Viry (France) so that’s the least French part of that team
Now back to our regularly scheduled programming of rbr 2nd seat:
So rbr started by buying the Jaguar team in mid 2000s after afaik getting fed up by Sauber who they used to sponsor. Also at that time Sauber was sponsored by Petronas, Mercedes’ current title sponsor. Fun fact
The two drivers that they started with was David Coulthard who no one cares about in this story and Mark Webber, Australian, first victim of rbr 2nd seat shenanigans
At some point (for the 2009 season I think?) Seb Vettel, German, certifiable little shit at that time, replaces Coulthard
Insert a highlight reel of Seb Vettels warcrimes between ~2010 - 2013, which culminate in Multi-21 Mark Webber retiring after the 2013 season. He gets replaced by Toro Rosso driver/Red Bull junior Daniel Ricciardo, Australian, happy go lucky guy and our next victim in a couple of years
2014 brings new regs for the cars and Red Bull struggles to adapt. For context Seb went from a 9 win streak at the end of 2013 to no podiums in 2014. Yeah. So he runs away to Ferrari for 2015 to become a victim of Italian incompetence instead
He gets replaced by Daniil Kvyat, Russian, the most forgettable man in this story. Also he is pretty new into F1, it’s his second or third year there
2015 is sorta meh for rbr but the two Daniels are sorta even. And then 2016 happens
Here’s the thing; Daniil decides to play bumper cars in Russia and China right off the bat at the beginning of the season, one of the victims being former rbr golden child Seb. Now there’s more lore that I don’t remember but it culminates in him being replaced for Spain 2016 by Max Verstappen, Dutch, aged like 18 at that time
Max goes on to win his first race with Red Bull because Mercedes (the best team on the grid) is in the throes of a civil war and their drivers take each other out. There could be novels written about those two drivers btw
The next two and half years are a slow process of the garage slowly going from preferring Danny Ric to preferring Max. Highlights include Baku 2018 and then Dans redemption win in Monaco the same year. There could be novels about this as well but we culminate in Dan leaving for Renault
And then we get to the real musical chairs. He gets replaced by Pierre Gasly, French, third victim of rbr 2nd seat
He has a shite start to the season and ends up getting replaced by Alex Albon, Thai, a rookie that year, midway through the season after Christian Horner, Mr Ginger spice, swore up and down he won’t
Intermission: Toro Rosso liked playing musical chairs as well and Pierre Gasly only got an F1 seat at the last few races for 2017, Alex got told he’s racing in 2019 (his first season) days before preseason testing. With no experience in an F1 car. And there’s a world of difference between a shit car (Toro Rosso) and a good car (Red Bull). Yeah they were ultimately victims of rbrs shitty management, especially Alex since he does wonders in a Williams now
Rbr decides to drop Alex after 2020. Except they usually promote Toro Rosso drivers and the two Toro Rosso drivers right now? Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat. Yeah
So they end up hiring Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez, Mexican, who knows if he will be racing next year. Idk if he got an extension or if they hired him for four years, either way his contract is supposed to last until end of 2024 season but right now how Mr Ginger spice is acting… yeah
Also, Daniel just came back to rbr as a driver for Alpha Tauri (former Toro Rosso) after a mid season swap that was widely regarded as shittily done so there are very little contract issues that would stop Red Bull from hiring him, a marketing departments golden boy, a good friend of Max, as the second driver to maybe finally have a good team
(Red Bull has never ended 1-2 in drivers standings. Checo is currently second but Sir Lewis Hamilton can do wonders sometimes)
So to reiterate the seat movements:
It’s Webber -> Ricciardo -> Gasly -> Albon -> Perez in that metaphorical seat which when rb had a clear first and second drivers it was usually second drivers seat
And (Coulthard ->) Vettel -> Kvyat -> Verstappen for that other seat. The one that if rb had a clear first and second drivers was usually first (Vettel, Verstappen after ~2018)
Bonus fun fact about Liam Lawson, one of the threats for Checos seat:
He is born in 2002. He’s younger than Fernando Alonso’s career by several months, upwards to a year
He is the guy that knocked Verstappen out of quali in Q2 in Singapore and consequently broke the several year long streak of at least one car always in Q3 that Red Bull has been holding
There is always a debate if he has a guaranteed seat from rbr or not at some point. There were rumors of a guaranteed for 2025 a while ago but who knows…
Sorry for rambling so much I have thoughts haha
forgot i’ve been sitting on this ask for a month lol but yes. red bull second seat drama is indeed fascinating. and now there is aparently another rumor that arthur leclerc might come up to f1 through racing bulls (alpha tauri) which would disrupt the process again.

more of a opinion question, but do you think six will ever bring back old cast members for the long term productions (like west end, broadway, uk/na tours)? i'm not talking about back to back contracts (like jen caldwell) or the short term replacements (like natalie paris and courtney mack), but people who left coming back for a full contract. like the odds of anna uzele coming back as parr for the 2023-24 broadway cast (just a random example)
I think it realllllllyyyy depends on the scenario. Here's a few scenarios where that could happen:
1. Short term replacements. I know you said you're specifically not asking about this, but it feels remiss to not at least mention given that 90% of returns will probably go into this category. For anyone not familiar, this is mostly when they just need someone to bridge the gap between different contracts or cover for a longer-term injury. That's because it's typically more logistically convenient to bring someone who has already been with the show back in. Examples: Khaila Wilcoxon with Broadway, Natalie May Paris and Courtney Mack with the Aragon Tour, Madeline Fansler with the Australian Tour, Jessica Niles and Rebecca Wickes with the UK Tour (this is a non-exhaustive list with just the most recent examples)
2. Promotion. This is someone who re-joins the production full-time for a full contract that is considered a step up the ladder from their prior one. That might be promo from touring cast to Broadway (often preferred because of higher pay and ability to live in one spot) or cruise to mainland, or it might be from alt to principal. Logistical factors can also play a part in this, like Caitlin Tipping and Vicki Manser both joining the UKT post-lockdown when they needed new principals and couldn't hold full auditions. Examples: Caitlin Tipping, Vicki Manser, and Natalie Pilkington joining the UK Tour, Abigail Sparrow with the Canadian production (others exist). Wicked and Moulin Rouge are both examples of other Broadway shows that nearly always do this.
2.5. Universal swings. This is really a combo of 1 + 2. Being a universal swing is incredibly demanding, even moreso than regular swalt contracts. It's much easier to hire actors who already know the show extensively and who they know can reliably learn and perform all those tracks. In the case of Six, every single universal swing has been returning from another contract. Examples: Liv Alexander, Bryony Duncan, and Harriet Watson in the UK, Marilyn Caserta and Cassie Silva in the US. Kelly Denice Taylor also functioned in a similar capacity temporarily, and both the US and UK have had a number of alts on standby/learning covers for other productions in case they're needed (but not on official universal contracts)
C. Promotion of the show/"starcast" or "stuntcast." This is when a major “name” joins a show. It’s often in an attempt to sell more tickets, usually (although not always) when a show might be starting to struggle with ticket sales but may not be at a crisis point, and is trying to figure out a way to revitalize the show enough that it could continue running. There's two versions of this: 1. Someone who has no prior association with the show. In this scenario, the star-cast/stunt-cast actor is often a significant celebrity, particularly if the intent is to bring in ticket revenue. Examples of this from other shows would include Jojo in Moulin Rouge or Lillias White/Betty Who in Hadestown 2. Someone who has a prior connection to the show, usually meaning a former cast member who would be a significant draw if brought back in now. When bringing back a former actor to sell tickets is the intent, it's most often a member of an original cast who has significant enough popularity/notoriety to hopefully pull in more audiences (ie - Lin Manuel Miranda briefly joining the casts of both the In the Heights and Hamilton tours in Puerto Rico). That scenario is incredibly likely with at least some of the original West End cast members; Natalie May Paris would be a seemingly obvious possibility for another West End contract if they ever needed her (the Broadway cast is similarly popular in the US). On rarer occasion shows might bring in someone who was originally a replacement (not original cast), but who has also gained significant popularity/notoriety since their initial run in a show. Six commonly casts actors who are fairly young and/or early in their career, so many actors will use it as a jumping off point. That means that they've already seen, and are likely to continue seeing actors, actors who perform in Six and then go on to other significant roles that help grow their name. For instance, Adrianna Hicks and Anna Uzele both just led Broadway shows this season while Joy Woods led a major off-Broadway and is expected to be in a shared lead role next season. If those three actors are able to continue getting cast in lead roles and becoming even more well known, there might be draw for Six to bring them back in the future. Bringing back the original West End cast for Hampton Court/proshot is a similar idea. However, with HC they were bringing back the original cast to promote and film a pro-shot, not a specific production, so it's not quite the same scenario. Examples: none from Six...yet! Again, these rules of thumb mostly apply to principals. For alternates there's also the possibility that some might be asked to come back in the future as a vacation cover/universal swings (which I mentioned above), and they also have the increased chance of re-joining as emergency cover for a temporary period. It is also possible for principals to emergency cover, but is generally less likely since they only provide coverage for one role and in those scenarios it’s usually more helpful for them to bring in an alt with more role flexibility.

A second, almost Jake-less second season saw the ex-con Max, his old life gone, embroiled in a vengeful battle with the intimidating Roy and his even more intimidating wife, Maggie, a cardigan-wearing cobra played with calm relish by a magnificently against-type Phyllis Logan.
As we rejoin it for the last death-waltz, Guilt is still skulking stealthily around Edinburgh’s underbelly. Maggie Lynch is still holding meetings, ie conversations where she threatens to kill someone, either in the city’s fanciest rooms or in disarmingly beautiful pockets of post-industrial wasteland.
Despite that, Phyllis Logan is the perfect antagonist: omniscient and omnipotent in the manor she runs, with a jagged personal brittleness beginning to poke through her armour. Opposite her, Bonnar has never been better in a role that lets him display his two great strengths – hypnotic charm and snarling, desperate malevolence – at the same time. They have made Guilt’s trip around Edinburgh’s dark corners a rare thrill.
Guilt is available on BBC iPlayer and airs on BBC Two in the UK from 27 April, with an Australian screening date to be confirmed.

second tag meme and also from @ravenkinnie: book recs!
no time to spare / ursula le guin / i've been slowly trying to make my way through her essay collections and this is one i really love so far. i also read words are my matter but that one had some of her more questionable political stances so i enjoyed this one bc it was focused on more generic and personal topics
good intentions / kasim ali / i would honestly highly recommend this to south asians specifically bc i don't think i've seen any other book that holds south asian millennials accountable for their tendency to damn their parents to inflexibility from the outset and then fail to hold themselves accountable for never challenging traditional mindsets. this book specifically deals with anti-blackness within the south asian community and i think it does a fantastic job of it (please wait until the end bc it does end as it deserves to end but for a moment you will get worried towards the middle that it won't go that way lol. trust me)
the king of attolia / megan whalen turner / obv i would rec the queen's thief series in general but this is by and large my favorite of the whole series (well. bar the sixth book which closely ties with it) and much as i am sure everyone loved this series the most when it was from eugenides's perspective i cannot help but think that i never love eugenides more than when i read about him through the perspective of those who love him dearly
each little bird that sings / deborah wiles / this was a pretty formative book in my childhood esp wrt the concept of how children process death. it's actually part of a quartet of companion novels, each of which i love dearly and one of which is actually the inspiration for my current username, but i think this one is executed the best and it also happens to be the most well known installment, definitely for good reason
supreme inequality / adam cohen / i feel like if you're not necessarily into studying the law but want to gain a better, in-depth understanding of why we are where we are right now with american law this is a good book to read. it corrects a lot of misconceptions around the idea that the supreme court was ever consistently progressive (ie severe brevity and breakdown of the social welfare oriented burger era) and discusses the evolution of judicial interpretation of major topics over the course of the last several decades
the f team / rawah arja / this came as a rec in a melina marchetta newsletter and i'm so glad it did! it's a really fun and messy look into life as a lebanese-australian boy and what i think it does well is not shy away from culturally ingrained flaws, rather seek to dissect and understand them and highlight how crucial an emotionally mature and communication-dependent upbringing is for young muslim/arab boys. there are a few jokes here and there that caught the side eye from me bc they felt severely lacking in self-awareness but other than that i really enjoyed it
the piper's son / melina marchetta / my favorite marchetta novel forever and always, and the second installment in the inner west trilogy of companion novels, following saving francesca. what i really adore about this one is the interplay of grief between so many people and this guilt you have to overcome over the impact of the death of a loved one on your life. bc sometimes it utterly tears you apart and other times it brings you together and the emotions of that are so horribly complicated. i also simply adore the continued exploration of the main friend group and how as harsh as the girls are on tom they are so protective and dedicated, too, bc that's how they all are with each other. it's a book that constantly makes me ache
beloved / toni morrison / interestingly i find this book to be highly relevant considering the recent abortion fiasco in the american legal scene and its relation to abusive domestic situations but it's also one of the books i loved reading the most in undergrad particularly bc of its brutal exploration into how oppressed peoples are driven to self-inflicted violence as a last resort. can you blame a woman for killing her child when the only other option was damning that child to a life of slavery? it's a situation that has to be analyzed with so much empathy and compassion and that's exactly what morrison affords it
the secret garden / frances hodgson burnett / one of two other books i loved reading the most in undergrad (with the third one being north and south). i read this for a british literature class that i took at a time i was severely starting to doubt my degree again after having already gone through a really rough depressive period following jonghyun's death so it really opportunely entered my life. i remember reading the magic monologue towards the end and just crying and crying bc it felt so liberating and while the rest of my undergrad journey was not necessarily a total high i do think this helped comfort me a lot

y'know im about to go feral on how EVERYTHING is under subscriptions. want this viddy game to run better??? get *insert viddy company name here or or viddy game title here* plus or extra or up your plan to get access to EXTRAS!!
bc the other day, i was making a list of all the different games i might download on my xbox in the future. fallout 76, which has fallout 1st.... which is a $22.99 per a month or $179 a year subscription, just to get better skins etc in the game. i want to download trivial pursuit for me and my dad. but xbox and ubisoft keep recommending "get ubisoft+" which is ANOTHER subscription service through ubisoft. another like $25 a month. like given it could be worth it for me if i got into assassins creed on a bigger level than casual. get EA play to get exclusive sims content!! for ANOTHER $6.99 a month. get xbox games pass (which i have) for $18.95 a month!!! and to be fair, i get EA play for free through xbox game pass. but still.
for example, the other day i updated my nintendo online sub account to the extras pack or whatever.... all bc i wanted to look at the gameboy advance online thing...... but instead of letting me look at it and play super mario world 2 on it on my NORMAL SUBSCRIPTION (which i already had access to on nintendo online snes/game cube or whatever.... and plus i though the GBA platform would have more games than it did (like 10 games but i thought it'd have like 50 or something) i had to change my subscription to the nintendo online plus extras pack for GBA online. but that subscription, was $41.95 this year bc i bought it on sale,... however, next year it'll be $60. like at least its $60 a year and not a month. but i'm still pissed off. i should've been able to get access to this for the $30 a year i was already paying!!! and for a measly 10 games not the like 50 games on the game cube/snes online game offerings.
just. im so sick and tired of EVERY company demanding customers to pay a monthly or yearly subscription for access or extras or for something to run better. who the fuck is made of enough money to afford fallout 1st??? ubisoft+??? like dgmw, i get it if you're SUPER into any of these games. like it's worth $22.99 a month to access extras across the library of ubisoft+ if you're a hella fan of assassin's creed or their other games (ie trivial pursuit). or $6.99 for EA play for the love of sims or every single sports game ever.
just i guess it's burn out maybe that EVERYONE wants your money. a section of your wallet continuously until you cancel. i have to subscribe to my area's local newspaper for $179 a year. i subscribed to an app by the adf (australian defence force) to do job aptitude tests (im ignoring it tbh lol). i subscribe to the NYTs games app for $2.99 a month. i WAS paying $15 a month (but now it's closer to $20) for scribd, which is now everand, for audiobooks. for better use of my xbox, i subscribe to xbox games pass, as i said earlier, for $18.95 a month. and from next year, i'll pay $60 a year for nintendo online (unless i drop down back to the cheaper option to get rid of GBA online). i subscribe for $100 a year to microsoft for the essential apps of microsoft word/powerpoint etc. i pay $100 a year for norton antivirus on my windows laptop that i barely use now.
there's adhd apps that I keep getting recommended on fb that are like $150 a year or something. astrology app subscriptions (that i'll NEVER buy) that are like $15 a month.... as examples of apps that i won't use, but I get suggested all the time on social media. once i get a job, i'll be constantly asked about what tv streaming apps im subbed to as well (none). WHY does EVERYONE want my fucking money???? i am so sick to death of subscriptions.

Yet another fangame idea (this time Danganronpa edition)
Okay so this is a lot more all over the place as I'm still coming up with the basic plot.
So this takes place after V3. A fan of the TV show is annoyed that it's ended and also has comvenient acess to a time machine, so they go back in time to the 2000s where the dispair thing hasn't happened yet, and takes over an international private school somewhere in england to create a killing game that they can participate in or something. None of the ultimate titles are official in the sense that they're from hope's peack, but the mastermind added them for authencisity.
The game will be much, much shorter than a regular DR game and it'll not really stick to the formula of the official games and sorta do it's own thing. I have a plan at one point in a trial, this dutch ballet dancer pulls out 2 guns and starts to shoot everyone so that only they survive and so the killing game forcefully ends. They fail.
Another idea I have is that the mastermind (ie the one controlling whatever the pound shop monokuma of this game will be) is in the game themselves and is in full control of everything (like if the real junko enoshima was in the first game from the start as one of the students, not like tsumigi who's more of a pawn for monokuma and the other show people) and towards the end they get murdered but the "a body has been discovered" doesn't play (cause they're dead) and the last 2 people spend the last chapter trying to figure out what's going on.
Deaths! I have a few in mind. There's this post about Kyoko's original death being her chopped up and cooked into the food in chapter 1. I'm taking that idea, making the blood red, and the "a body has been discovered" announcement plays when they're all eating stew and they're all confused as everybody but the dead person is here in this room so how could a body have been discovered? Then someone finds the leftover corpse with blood, skin, bones etc on the floor in a cupboard somewhere. Another one is for the execution of a pastry chef where they get their blood drained, chucked into a massive mixing bowl, other ingredients get added, and then the electric mixer turns on and you can imagine how that goes. Also the blood from earlier is for the icing. I'm not sure of the other details but I want a garderner to be eaten by a massive venus flytrap.
My idea is that it's from the perspective of one of the NPCs, so it's a lot more visual novel-y (thankfully, all those trial minigames would take me years to code) and could possibly have multiple endings?
The ideas for the ultimates:
The role of the protagonist: ultimate physician
ultimate gardener
ultimate spy (mastermind disguised as a diffrent ultimate)
ultimate pastry chef (fancy baker)
ultimate ballet dancer (the unhinged one and possibly the controlable character? I came up with their character like 5 hours ago but I can already tell they're going to be my favourite to write)
ultimate geographer (also australian cause why not)
ultimate critic
some others that are based on cultures and stuff around the world
And yeah that's all I have at this current time.

I understand your pain when it comes two conflating TMA characters. I think up until very close to actually meeting them I thought Gerry and Jared were the same person 💀. I don’t even have an excuse it was literally just the name.
anon you’ve just unlocked the tale of A Fuckin Discourse that occurred in a discord server I’m in early last year
see there’s this one bit in mag 102 where jon refers to (imo) “gerard”, and elias responds “gerard keay?” but pronounces with the emphasis on the second syllable, whereas jon’s been pronouncing it with the emphasis on the first, which, in a non-rhotic (ie, wouldn’t pronounce the R in hard) accent, does sound VERY similar to “jared”. however, to speakers with non-rhotic accents in the server (an english person and an australian person both sent voice memos attempting to demonstrate), jared and gerard have distinct vowel sounds in their first syllables.
BUT, coming from people WITH rhotic accents (ie. WOULD pronounce the R in hard) (a canadian sent a voice memo, and an american had Very Strong Opinions), they sound a lot more similar, and presumably therefore the distinction specifically in jon’s voice sounds less noticeable.
so basically, especially if you happen to be someone with a rhotic accent, that’s a very understandable misapprehension, and my friends and i argued on basically that topic over multiple days one time

Translation anon again — thanks for answering.
I guess we are just coming at it from vastly different perspectives. Translation is not an exact science and there is an element of interpretation to all translation; you always bring something of yourself to what you are translating, no matter how big or small (example: “they all” is a very Australian construction, and OP is Korean-Australian). Assuming someone is an “anti” because of a difference in translations is an incredibly bad-faith reading of the situation and that is simply not how I choose to approach life, or translation work.
Secondly, to me, there is a difference between an outright mistranslation (the enlistment one for example) and a slightly different shade in meaning (today’s tweet, or even the marriage tweet from the same account.) And there is FURTHER difference between those and a malicious mistranslation that intends to cause harm to the character and reputation of a person (ie. libel); that’s where I would draw the line and support calling for accountability. But nothing that was said about JM (or JK) was libellous. It’s not the first time I’ve disagreed with pile-ons on Twitter translators though and I’m sure it won’t be the last; you could literally not pay me enough to do the amount of live translation they do, and I do get paid for it. Four or five dodgy translations out of literally hundreds or thousands is not a bad track record.
Pronouns are definitely important depending on context, but again, the difference between “you” and “they” is negligible in this case and does not alter the meaning or tone of the sentence in any meaningful way. (That Tkkrs *chose* to read tone into it is not the translator’s fault, imo.)
Anyway, will leave it here as we’re clearly on different pages, so we can agree to disagree. But thank you for entertaining my questions respectfully. Appreciate it. Hopefully this was an helpful or informative POV to read for some.
I disagree with you but that’s okay. Hope you have a good day or night 😊

Tumblr media
While the likes of Scooby-Doo has placed the idea of folk impersonating ghosts for fun and profit in many people’s minds in the present day, a tradition of “playing the ghost“ existed in both the British Isles and Australia in the 19th and early twentieth century.
A while back I covered the case of the Hammersmith Ghost, where a borough in south London had an instance of mass-panic break out over a supposed haunting, there are in fact many, many cases from Down Under of people messing about in a similar manner.
These cases included instances as Perth’s 1882 appearance by the “Wizard Bombardier“, who for was known for wearing an ostentatious outfit of white robes and a sugarloaf hat. The Wizard’s strategy involved disorienting people with loud screams before hurling stones and other sorts of missiles at them and then running away.
Tumblr media
Many of the ghost hoaxers were not identified, but one that was was one Herbert Patrick McLennan, who referred to himself as 'the ghost' to the press. He wore a white body suit, knee-high rubber boots, a long white frock coat, a white slouch hat with a feather, and a mask, “Haunting“ early 1900s Ballarat, the “unassuming“ clerk took the opportunity to assault and expose himself to various women, and when a reward was put out for his arrest by the cops, he threatened to shoot any policemen he saw on sight. ...He was nonetheless eventually captured and sentenced to a year in jail for his crime.
There are dozens of other examples too. Between 1880 and 1889 a woman covered in glowing paint “haunted“ a hotel and spookily played music on her guitar. Another strapped a full-size coffin to their body to give the impression they had just climbed out of their grave. In 1895, one prankster created a costume to resemble a knight and emblazoned the phrase “prepare to meet thy doom” on his armor, and would yell threats of decapitation at people to really drive the point home. One newspaper recounted a case of a woman coating herself in glowing paint to spook a Ballarat police man, but sadly I couldn’t find further details of that (below).
Tumblr media
Wait led to this craze? Waldron, author of the article Playing the Ghost: Ghost Hoaxing and Supernaturalism in Late Nineteenth-Century Victoria, puts it down to a combination of low levels of law enforcement, increased amounts of leisure time for people living out in the Australian goldfields, and the considerable distance between the people of, say, Ballarat and centres of “religious authority“ such as larger established cities or England.
As for influences, some have said that the inspiration came from a combination of Western gothic literature mixing with the ghost stories brought over by Chinese immigrants that came over to work the goldfields. As for the average hoaxer? By reputation they were considered to be working class folk and “larrikins“ (ie gangs of mostly youths out to cause trouble and commit crimes), however, of the few that were actually arrested they were supposedly “school teachers and clerks and the like and a small number of middle-class women.”
As technology progressed, it also worked to make the costumes more spooky, with the invention of phosphorescent paint. Unfortunately, this paint had the unfortunate side-effects of eventually causing cancer, disfigurements, madness and death, so its application was a mixed bag as it were.
Much like the Hammersmith Ghost example, however, people quickly ran out of patience with the various ghosts and, well, gangs of people forming to beat the tar out of ghosts, which considering how some where jerks using it as an opportunity to hurt folk it’s not really that surprising.
Tumblr media
Incidences of people Playing the Ghost came to an eventual stop with the outbreak of the First World War, where some 60,000 Australian soldiers died. It has been theorised by some that due to the enormous number of mass deaths even the more innocent ghost hoaxers no longer saw the humour in their pranks, and the fad just faded away on its own.

Ellie Carpenter "What Are You Listening To" Interview (OL)
On their YouTube page
I wasn't going to do this but (1) someone asked really nicely and (2) Carpenter's disdain of "Call Me Maybe" made me laugh. I'm pretty much down to translate/transcribe whatever, just ask nicely and understand it might take me a bit of time to get to it. :)
I linked to the songs they discuss so you can judge their music tastes to your heart's content.
Blah blah standard disclaimers apply. I flagged it when the conversation was already in English / ie if it doesn't say "[in English]" in front of it that means the discussion was in French.
"WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO" with Ellie Carpenter
Jule: Hello everybody, happy to see you again. Welcome back for a new episode of "What Are You Listening To". In each episode, we're going to go for a drive with a men or women's player for Olympique Lyonnais to listen to their music choices, chat with them, get to know them a little bit better. And for this episode, Ellie Carpenter is with us. [in English] Ellie, how are you?
Carpenter: I'm good, how about you?
Jule: So we're talking in French to start?
Carpenter: Eh, yeah.
Jule: Okay, that works. Are you happy to be here with us?
Carpenter: Yeah. I'm very happy [to be here].
Jule: We're going to go for a drive, listen to some music, find out what you like, I'm going to show you what I like as well. I think that's going to be pretty cool. Sounds good?
Carpenter: Sounds good.
Jule: Okay, let's get started.
Jule: I asked you which songs you wanted us to listen to in the car. We have Louis in the backseat, who appreciates your song choices.
Carpenter: Oh yeah?
Jule: So he approves. He completely agrees [with your choices].
Carpenter: Okay.
Jule: So we're going to start with your favorite song at the moment.
[REMA, SELENA GOMEZ - CALM DOWN]
Carpenter: Yeah, it's my favorite right now. For the moment.
Jule: For the moment?
Carpenter: Yeah, for the moment. It's the first song I listen to when I'm driving here [to work].
Jule: So when you're driving to the stadium, this is what you're listening to. [in English] Why do you like this song? Is it the rhythm, the atmosphere?
Carpenter: [in English] Yeah. And it's chill. And also I like Selena Gomez.
Jule: [in English] You listen to which style of music? Like in general?
Carpenter: [in English] R&B, chill, a bit of rap sometimes.
Jule: [in English] You chose a rap song that we will listen to.
Carpenter: [in English] I think I did, yeah.
Jule: [in English] Do you listen to some French songs?
Carpenter: [in English] Yeah, I do. I like French songs.
Jule: [in English] What kind of artists?
Carpenter: [in English] Aya Nakamura. I like Aya Nakamura.
Jule: [in English] So I put on this song, you will like it?
[AYA NAKAMURA - DJADJA]
Carpenter: [in English] Yeah, it's my favorite one.
[Jule and Carpenter sing some of the lyrics]
Jule: So you listen to this in the locker room?
Carpenter: Yeah.
Jule: And in training?
Carpenter: Yeah. I'm the DJ for the locker room. But I switch between English, French.
Jule: Okay. And did you decide that you were going to be the DJ? Or did they say "go for it, go for it"?
Carpenter: No, I think the girls [were like] "Ellie, go for it, go for it." Okay!
[Jule and Carpenter sing some more of the lyrics]
Jule: Did they explain the lyrics to you a little? Did they translate it?
Carpenter: The song? Yeah. Go on.
Jule: [in English] I don't know. Even in French it's really complicated sometimes.
Carpenter: It's complicated, yeah.
Jule: [in English] Because the word "catchana", I didn't know it before the song came out.
Carpenter: You know Janice Cayman, on the team? All the players call her Jaja.
Jule: Of course.
Carpenter: Like the song. Jaja!
Jule: [in English] We listened to some French songs. You're Australian, and you played most of your career in Australia.
Carpenter: [in English] Yeah.
Jule: [in English] Just a few years in Portland. And then you arrive in Europe. It's your first European experience. Is it difficult to move from Australia to France?
Carpenter: [in English] I think yes and no. Obviously with the language it's difficult, because it's a whole new language. I didn't know a word of French before I arrived.
Jule: [in English] You didn't know any words?
Carpenter: [in English] Nothing. Just bonjour (hello).
Jule: That's at least something.
Carpenter: But now, I speak [Carpenter gestures vaguely with her hand]
Jule: French?
Carpenter: French. I'm okay at it.
[TONES AND I - UR SO F***ING COOL]
Carpenter: Do you know this artist?
Jule: [in English] I know this artist. I didn't know she was Australian. But I know [her] a little, I got one of her songs. She had one hit, but I don't remember the name.
Carpenter: Dance Monkey, maybe?
Jule: [in English] That's it. Because when I think of Australian artists, I think about Kylie Minogue. She's the first one that comes to mind.
Carpenter: I think I'm a bit young for that.
Jule: But is she still a star?
Carpenter: Yeah, yeah.
Jule: [in English] Why did you choose to speak out and listen to Tones and I?
Carpenter: I think she's a cool artist. I like her songs.
Jule: We listed to Aya Nakamura. I'd like to introduce you to classic French songs. We're going to take a listen, you'll tell us what you think of them.
[JEAN-JACQUES GOLDMAN - ENVOLE MOI]
Jule: [in English] It's like one of the biggest stars in French history.
Carpenter: Oh yeah? I never heard about him. Everyone knows him?
Jule: Everyone.
Carpenter: So if I play this artist in the locker room, the players will know it?
Jule: Yeah. Jean-Jacques Goldman.
Carpenter: Okay, next time in the locker room, I'm going to play this. The players are going to be like "what is this, Ellie?"
Jule: Louis [the sound technician], what do you think?
Carpenter: Do you like it, Louis?
Jule: [in English, to Carpenter] Do you like it?
Carpenter: It's okay, it's okay. It's not my favorite, but it's okay.
Jule: [in English] Another one.
[PATRICK BRUEL - PLACE DES GRANDS HOMMES]
Jule: [in English] It's a classic also, from the 80s/90s.
Carpenter [in English]: Wow.
Jule: [in English] Every girl was in love with him.
Carpenter: [in English] Really? Patrick Bruel.
Jule: [starts singing lyrics]
Carpenter: I like it.
Jule: [in English] Ah, you like that?
Carpenter: It's good.
[song continues]
Jule [in English]: You like that?
Carpenter: Yeah, I'm into it.
[song continues]
[PATRICK SEBASTIEN - LES SARDINES]
Carpenter: The sardines?!
Jule: [in English] You know that [song]?
Carpenter: No.
Jule: [in English] It's really a classic. Louis [the sound technician] really likes it. You dance like that, with the shoulders moving.
Carpenter: [in English] I like to dance, so I like it.
Jule: [in English] It's perfect for dancing. So your favorite is what, this one?
Carpenter: Patrick.
Jule: [in English] So you like Patrick Bruel?
Carpenter [in English]: I like Patrick Bruel.
Jule: [in English] So now we will listen to a song that you choose to get you in the mood before a game. We talked a little in the beginning about rap songs, and this is a rap song.
Carpenter: Oh, yeah.
[MIGOS - FIGHT NIGHT]
Jule: [in English] Do you have any rituals, something that you always do before a game?
Carpenter: [in English] Well normally I'm on the bus and I have my AirPods in. Not really a ritual, I just listen to music like this, to get me in the mood.
Jule: [in English] I understand why you choose this one.
Carpenter: [in English] Yeah?
Jule: [in English] It really gets you in the fighting mode.
Carpenter: [in English] Yeah. It's like, let's go.
Jule: [in English] You really want to...
Carpenter: [in English] Fight.
[DAVID GUETTA - I'M GOOD (BLUE)]
Carpenter: [in English] I like this song. It's a new song actually, a remix.
Jule: [in English] What is like in the locker room after a victory? Is everyone celebrating?
Carpenter: [in English] We do our like ritual song.
Jule: [in English] You're still the DJ?
Carpenter: [in English] I am, yeah. Now after, I just play songs that gets everyone up and dancing a little bit.
Jule: [in English] And there was another one, this one.
Carpenter: [in English] Oh yeah.
Jule: [in English] A rap song as well.
[FETTY WAP - TRAP QUEEN]
Jule: [in English] And on your right we have Tony Garnier Hall, it's a big area for concerts. And since we're talking music, which one was your favorite concert that you saw in your life?
Carpenter: [in English] Ever? I think Rihanna.
Jule: [in English] In Australia?
Carpenter: [in English] In Australia, yeah.
[A-AH - TAKE ON ME]
Carpenter: Oh yeah. Do you know karaoke?
Jule: Yeah.
Carpenter: All the time, with my parents, my brother, my father.
Jule: With your family?
Carpenter: Yea, with the family. Always, with this song. [Carpenter hums the song] You know it?
Jule: Yeah. [in English] It's really a classic.
Carpenter: Yeah?
Jule: Yeah, everyone knows it. Louis [the sound technician], you know it? Louis loves it.
Carpenter: Yeah.
Jule: If Louis love it, then it's good.
Carpenter: If Louis approves, then it's valid.
[Carpenter and Jule sing the lyrics]
Jule: [in English] Do you spend a lot of time with your family, with your parents, doing karaoke?
Carpenter: In the car. Going to training every day.
Jule: [in English] Is difficult to be far away from them?
Carpenter: Sometimes. But it's normal for me, because I left Australia when I was 16. So it's normal.
[ZIGGY ALBERTS - RUNAWAY]
Carpenter: Oh, this is my favorite artist.
Jule: [in English] Of all time?
Carpenter: Yeah.
Jule: [in English] Favorite song also?
Carpenter: Yeah. All his songs.
Jule: Okay.
Carpenter: He is Australian. And his [songs are] just chill, relax. And I adore his voice, yeah.
Jule: [in English] When you listen to Migos and then this one, you just ... [Jules mimics bringing it down] cool down?
Carpenter: [laughs] [in English] "Ellie, it's a calm moment." [in French] Because all the players, they think I'm crazy. Always crazy. They're like "Ellie, you're never calm." But I am! [in English] But they don't see me calm, you know.
Jule: [in English] I imagine when you go on holiday, you have the sunset and this song in the car, yeah. Perfect.
Jule: [in English] We're totally going to change the mood. Here we are calm, relaxed. Now it will not be the same.
[SKRILLEX AND RICK ROSS - PURPLE LAMBORGHINI]
Carpenter: [in English] This song gets me through all my rehab workouts. If I'm on the bike, you know... [in French] I hate the bike. I HATE it.
Jule: Me too. I hate it too.
Carpenter: [in English] My trainer, Remi.
Jule: [in English] Shoutout to Remi.
Carpenter: When it's a rehab session, I'm like "hang on, Remi. I need my song." And he knows it. He's like [scoffs] "Purple Lamborghini. Always." And I have it on repeat. [in English] It helps me so much.
[rap song continues]
[CARLY RAE JEPSEN - CALL ME MAYBE]
Jule: So we asked you which song you didn't really like, which you were tired of listening to. And it was this one.
Carpenter: Oh, yeah. It was ... [in English] You know the song that's just been played too much, you know. [scoffs] But I still know every lyric to the song, because it's been played so much.
Jule: [in English] It was a big hit.
Carpenter: [in English] A big hit. But I've heard it so much, I can't. If it's on, I skip it. [reaches for the console]
Jule: Okay. [moves to change the song]
Carpenter: [in English] It's okay. I like it.
Jule: [in English]: You like it or not?
Carpenter: [in English] I don't, but I would listen to it.
[CARLY RAE JEPSEN - CALL ME MAYBE (SPEED UP)]
Carpenter: Oh, it's a remix:
Jule: [in English] It's sped up.
Carpenter: Not bad.
[Carpenter sings the lyrics]
Jule: We're almost at our destination. Do you want to listen to your favorite song and we'll end it on that, or do you want to listen to another song?
Carpenter: You can choose your favorite.
Jule: My favorite? Okay. It'll be this one.
[rap song plays]
Jule: Thank you, Ellie. Good luck for the rest of the season. Thank you to you for following us on our Youtube channel and on OLPlay. We'll see you soon for the next episode. Bye!
