Crocodile icefish or white-blooded fish (Channichtyidae) are a family of fish living in the Antarctic ocean.
They have, and I cannot stress this enough, no hemoglobin and myoglobin, the proteins that bind oxygen in the blood and muscles of literally every other vertebrate.

World’s Largest Fish Nesting Ground With 60 Million Nests Discovered Under Antarctic ice
The unexpected find is way larger than any other known colony of fish nests found so far.
The fact that we know less about the ocean floor than we do about the surface of the Moon doesn’t make this incredible find any less surprising. Five hundred meters below the ice covering the south of Antarctica’s Weddell Sea, a research team recently discovered the world’s largest fish breeding site known to date.
According to a new study published in Current Biology, an estimated 60 million active nests of Jonah’s icefish (Neopagetopsis ionah) stretch across a vast area of at least 240 square kilometers. The discovery was facilitated by a towed camera system led by the German research vessel Polarstern.
Until now, researchers have encountered only a handful of icefish nests at a time, or perhaps several dozen. Even the most gregarious nest-building fish species were previously known to gather only in the hundreds (other such species include the artistically inclined pufferfish, and freshwater cichlids).
Deep sea biologist Autun Purser of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany, and colleagues stumbled across the massive colony in early 2021 while on a research cruise in the Weddell Sea, which is located between the Antarctic Peninsula and the main continent.
According to their findings, the icefish probably have a substantial and previously unknown influence on Antarctic food webs...

Crocodile icefish (family Channichthyidae)!
Tumblr media
Crocodile icefish, or white-blooded fish, are the only known vertebrates to lack hemoglobin in their blood as adults! They can manage fine via having larger blood vessels and large volumes of blood so the plasma in their veins can carry oxygen instead, as well as generally living in a cold environment where there is plenty oxygen. The coolness of their environment also makes their metabolism slow, which means they require less oxygen than warmer species!

Today on CHUNK! FUNK! GUNK! We rate
the CROCODILE ICEFISH:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1/10 Chunk
10/10 Funk
0-1/10 Gunk
Today is the crocodile icefish! (also called the white-blooded fish because apparently they don’t have hemoglobin in their blood) Awhile ago I did the other half of this anonymous user’s request, so today I finally finish their ask!
They are very bony, low chunk. The crocodile icefish is super funky though, getting style points from its cool frill and see-through bits. Also, it doesn’t have red blood cells, which is very weird and I’m kind of jealous. Extreme funk. I couldn’t find much in my brief research about their slime or mucous secretion, so I am left to assume that if they have any, it’s probably not that remarkable. Low gunk.
Overall: 8/10
It reminds me of something I would see in the game Subnautica! Also they’re really cute. Look at its little face.

Hi! Do you think there’s a way that riverclan cats could practice ice fishing? In my rewrite, their territory is quite small and there isn’t much room for regular hunting, and so I’m trying to figure out logistics of what they could do during the winter when the river freezes
Hmm... it's a bit outside the scope of my project, as icefishing isn't viable in the modeled regions. But you would need some pretty advanced tool use to be able to do that.
First you'd need to cut the hole. You need something very strong and sharp to do this, or spend a lot of time carefully chiselling through thick ice.
You'd need bait, which means you need something to hold it in place. Some kind of rope or string.
You'd need a spear with a line. Most important part. Fishing with your paws would be a really bad idea when you're leaning down into a frosty hole in the ice and the fish are too deep to reach. When you icefish, you are typically harpooning a fish and them pulling the spear back up. You'd need rope for this.
When polar bears hunt for seals by sitting near breathing holes, that only works because a seal needs air. They come up for a breath and the bear nabs 'em. That's not so with fish, who swim below the surface.
So icefishing might work better if your Clan is tool-less if they were hunting some kind of mammal, not fish.
But anyway, I've given you direction for your research. Good luck!
