What's ur fav piece of trivia for every* character?

(*or at least as much as you can recall off the top of ur head)

my favorite trivia for characters is usually just whatever i think is funniest so just keep that in mind. that's not always the case but you might see it become a pattern. oh the other thing is whatever is most soul-crushing so yeah.

Ichika - either the fact her name comes from how her parents met (because i think it's really sweet) or that she accidentally discovered miku when she was watching videos on her dad's tablet and opened a recording of a miku concert

Saki - she used to listen to the song Time Machine when she was in hospital (at Ichika's recommendation) to remind her of family and friends. It's the in-universe reason why she is featured on the cover. This is actually one of my favorite facts in the game overall.

Honami - she is surprisingly good at flirting

Shiho - not one I've posted before, but in Run! Sports Festival! she couldn't bring herself to throw any of the balls in the ball toss because they had cute animal designs on them

Minori - she once passed out because Haruka wished her happy birthday.

Haruka - she likes penguins because she thinks the way they waddle is cute and she likes how round a lot of penguin merch is

Airi - she followed all of Shizuku's campaigns and bought all the magazines she was featured in when she was still a member of Cheerful*Days. She insists it was just research.

Shizuku - either that she usually has a thermos of miso soup on her to eat after practice or archery club or that she isn't good at texting. i haven't posted either of these before

Kohane - again one I haven't posted yet, but her favorite photo she's taken of Count Pearl is one of Pearl eating mice. the rest of VBS are surprised that she isn't squeamish about that sort of thing (i dunno what they're talking about that sounds like a very cool photo).

An - the possible symbolism of the black stripe on her new school cardigan. hello to the person who submitted that i am still not over it.

Akito - in Cinema he's the only person to sing solo during the first two choruses, the others don't get solo parts in the chorus until the end of the song. i think about this one a lot actually

Toya - he can't swim

Tsukasa - he's the comedic relief and there's a lot of really random shit i know about him because of that, so my favorite fact about him is whatever will have the most impact in the moment if i were to mention it out of nowhere. for a less vague answer, this one although i consider it to be one of my worst posts

Emu - she's very good at replicating cartoon faces. i like this one because it raises a few questions about whether the L2Ds are still exaggerated or if she just looks like that and no one questions that she actually has a cartoon face. what if project sekai ends with them all becoming self-aware.

Nene - either the fact that she thinks the forest has good graphics or that she called rui's mom "auntie" when she was younger because i think it's cute.

Rui - i like a good reference and i appreciate that he sometimes references famous people and media.

Kanade - she's left handed. i also like that her family name was made up specifically to contrast with the rest of N25.

Mafuyu - either that it's shown one time that she can see ghosts and then it's never brought up or referenced again, or that the "mom's cooking" listed as her favorite food might refer to the bunny-shaped apple slices her mother would make for her when she was a kid. i also like the detail that her eyes being two-tone is because she inherited the eye colors of both her parents.

Ena - twitter user. also despite loving cheesecake, she doesn't like cheese. girl what the hell.

Mizuki - they started out editing by making AMVs for a magical girl anime they liked. Amia comes from the name of a character from that anime. also did you know they put ice cubes in noodles because of their sensitive tongue. ice cubes.

Bonus - some side character stuff I like

Kotaro's favorite food is strawberries but he doesn't like strawberry flavored things for whatever reason

Asahi and Sakurako's family names are Chinese mythology references

Tatsuya's hobbies are motorbiking and fishing. these are not things you expect to go together

Nagi hated tomatoes but she would eat them in front of An

Iori hates spicy food, whilst Mio's favorite food is super spicy ramen. Meanwhile Mio doesn't like cream, but Iori likes crepes (which usually have cream on them).

Souma started listening to foreign music after Arata left for America

gbr i forgot about the vocaloids for a second but before i call it a day i think it's incredibly funny that Len cannot reach the stools in crase cafe.

Who is Kim Young Jin?

The man behind the looks, bringing BTS' vision to life, from photo-folios, to music videos to high fashion magazine photoshoots.

Kim YoungJin and his team have worked with the members as a group and as individuals on their concerts and everything in between.

“Seoul-based stylist Youngjin Kim has been obsessed with fashion since he was a child, saving up his pocket money to buy magazines. “It was so special to me,” he remembers. After majoring in photography at college but leaning into the looks just as heavily, somebody suggested he give styling a go and well, the rest is history. These days, he’s working with BTS, but can also be found dressing the likes of NCT 127, Super M and Daniel Kang for cover features, campaigns and album artwork.”

👤What was your entry point to styling?

“I worked as an assistant to [Korean actor] Jin Oh Jeon’s stylist for about five years and came to understand the overall system of the Korean fashion scene. Looking back, that time was so precious; time that brought me to this moment, I guess.”

👤Tell us about the type of work you do.

“Styling for albums and projects such as “My Universe” by BTS and Coldplay is receiving tremendous attention on a global scale. Whenever I style an idol group, I think of a designer creating a collection. I mix and match clothes from different Japanese brands such as Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto, and I express my own aesthetic with styling to fit each concept. I also style various editorials for fashion magazines. I consider myself a fashion stylist, and when I first took on the role of an idol stylist, I was proud of demonstrating what kind of visuals could be created if a fashion stylist takes on an idol.”

👤Of course, a stylist doesn’t just ‘style’. You’re often a bridge between celebrities and brands — a look you introduce to an idol could quickly become a trend.

“Exactly. In many cases, celebrities or models with good momentum are recommended to brands or magazines, and if the celebrity is an ambassador of a fashion house, they communicate more closely with the fashion brand.”

👤What do you think is the most important thing in styling?

“I try to combine the latest fashion trends with classic items. For instance, I like pairing Levi's denim and casual sneakers with a Saint Laurent blazer. As details are crucial for men's clothes, the overall outfit is often impacted by details such as perfect length and sleeves.”

In Chapter 2 of BTS' journey, Kim YounJin has been part of many of the members solo projects that were even released post enlistment for some, such as j-hope LV campaign and styling for Esquire Magazine

👤Do you have a favourite brand or designer?

“I’ve always loved Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, which has had a huge impact on me as a stylist. I have such respect for a person who has accomplished what they’ve wanted to do for a long time — I think Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons are both great in that regard too.”

“I’m 32, so I was in elementary and middle school in the 1990s, which was when I started getting into fashion. Since I was really young, like 10 years old, I used to go downtown to buy clothes by myself. In elementary school, I wore baggy sweatshirts and jeans like this Balenciaga ensemble. I liked hip-hop and K-pop even back then and would dress up like this and dance at school festivals. Retro fashion is back in style, so it doesn’t at all look out of place or time to dress like this again.”

Season 2: canon or queercatching?

I see many GO cast and crew talking about a romance in season 2 and many people seem to take that as a confirmation that the Ineffable Husbands will be confrimed canon in season 2. But will they? Looking at the past I think we should be careful with our excitment. Because this could be queercatching instead of actual queer reprsentation.

To those of you unfamilar with the term, I can highly recommend you to watch this glorious video by Rowan Ellis.

Short summary: Queercatching is confirming a character as queer outside the show without ever making it explicit inside the show. So why I am so pessimistic? Neil already wrote a beautiful queer show, called the Sandman, didn’t he? Yeah, and this is already the first problem

1. Network

It does matter what Network you are writing for, as “beautiful” shown by Disney over the last couple of years. Netflix is really open to LGBTQ topics in their shows that are not aiming at a major audience. But they are also quick to cancel those shows again, and also netflix struggles to include queer characters in their major shows. The witcher, Stranger Things, Bridgerton... most of this shows have none or only one well written out and proud queer person among the main cast.

Now let us look at Prime. The wheel of time, The rings of power. Zero so far in LOTR, one queer side character in TWOT. Not a good starting point for making Ineffable husbands canon. Because let not fool you. GO is a show aimed at a mass market. A mass market that already had a breakdown over Sandman... at Netflix... not aimed at a mass market.

I can really recommend everyone to read the BTS book of the director of Shadowhunters, it is a beautiful inside in what rules the showrunners have to follow. Showrunners can not just go and make the main lead gay. Look at Velma f.e.

2. Advertisment

I saw people saying: But the show is promoted by the romantic relationship between the leads. So it must be explicit in the show.

Nope.

Promo has nothing NOTHING to do with the actual show. Social media campaigns are not run by the writers or showrunners, but by the network, giving the promo material to social media managers who also have not watched the show yet.

Look at the examples above.

Or the Venom Rom Com trailer for movie 1. Yeah, Venom and Eddie are dating and married. But at this point no one knew there would be a love confession in movie 2. This was just pure bait.

And yup, we now have the heart photo for our fav Demon/Angle duo.

But this just promo. Promo has nothing to do with the actual show. Promo can be accidentally or deliberately misleading. Yeah their wings are heartshaped, I see that, you see that... but is it confirmed? By anyone from the show? Has Neil said the wings are supposed to be hearts? Nope. Maybe he can’t, but I am actually really sure he won’t. Because this is what we are reading into it, not necessarily what is actually supposed to be here. Remeber: Gender reveal: blue

But Neil said they love eachother? 

I hear you say. Well, yeah but the whole quote is this:

They love eachother, they are not necessarily “in love” with each other. Also Neil really does support a QPR reading of them. This is also queer, of course, no question on that. But that would it make easier for Neil to claim they love eachother, without showing it explicit inside the show

But why would he do that?!

Well because, as he often has said, this is not his story. He shares this story with TP. He often said he does this show to honor TP, to honor his ideas. With sandman he did whatever he wanted, because it was queer and diverse all along. BUt with GO he is more careful. He will not do drastic changes, but leave the romantic relationship subtext and only epxlicit outside the show.

Let us look at other examples here:

F.e. the poly relationship in Levegere. It was confirmed by the showrunner that the OT3 is canon inside the show:

But it was never shown explicit. Not even in the soft reboot this year.And this show is produced by IMBD TV und runs of Amazon Freeve. So what a showrunner is saying on social media on what is actually happening inside a show does not necessarily has to be the same

Or how to train your dragon also has a gay character. Did you knew that or did you missed it like everyone else? It was even stated in the show. You don’t believe me: “This is why I never married. This and another reason” There is it stated that he canon gay inside the movie.

So what am I saying? That Neil is just bsaiting the fans, that Neil is bad at LGBTQ representation? No, I am saying that an explicit love story between Azi and Crowley is maybe not the story Neil wants to tell.

he is aware these two love eachother and he will never split them up. And he is aware that those are two non human genderless beings but that doesn’t change the fact that until now we have no real hint that they will be explicit queer in season 2.

But he said there will be a romance? Yeah, but he didn’t said between whom, so be careful with statement like that

Thats all I want to say with that post, be careful with your excitment.

Chapter 8 - Dreams

December 1989

Chicago is cold. It’s not like this is a revelation to Eddie, but the difference in the way Indiana feels in December and the way the Windy City is pummeling him is stark. He reluctantly traded his combat boots for what Steve calls ‘bean boots’ and if it wasn’t for his feet being so damn warm he’d be cursing Steve for giving him prep clothes.

He’s been anticipating the shop being a bit nightmarish in the run-up to the holidays, but the stream of customers is almost never-ending and the stock is running low. It got to the point that Eddie started calling other managers in the area to see how they were faring, and whether or not they could make tentative agreements to send customers hunting for particular finds to each other. 

Walking past the counter where Ezra is explaining to a mother why getting her thirteen-year-old a Frank Zappa album is a bad idea, he’s stopped by Jamie who is holding the phone up for him. “Eddie, someone named Max is calling? I asked for a last name and she audibly rolled her eyes.”

“Right, put her on hold and I’ll take it in the back. S’one of my kids,” he explains. The amount of adopted kids Eddie has is a running joke in the shop. All the staff know Dustin, but over the months, different calls have come in from the rest of the party, some of them asking for Eddie by name while others have straight up asked for Dad. It led to the staff comparing notes and swapping names until Eddie just put a group photo on his desk. 

“Red I assume the world is burning because you’re calling me instead of Steve. What’s up?”

“Has anyone ever told you that you’re dramatic? Like, have a normal phone conversation. Not everything is a campaign,” she quips and Eddie knows that she’s probably about to start a conversation she’d been avoiding for a bit.

“Fine, fine. Let me start over. Smash Records, Eddie Munson, manager speaking! Hello, Maxine, to what do I owe the pleasure!”

“I hope that causes you to get a rash. That sounded so plastic, ugh.” Max’s distaste is obvious and Eddie can picture her screwed-up face perfectly. “Look I’m calling because I’m coming to stay with you and Steve the day after Christmas until school starts up again. I already bought my bus ticket.”

It’s moments like this Eddie semi-regrets Steve’s open invitation to the kids. Steve probably thought they’d ask ahead of time, whereas Eddie knew better. Eddie knows Max must be telling not asking for a reason, so he lets it go. A quick glance at his calendar shows that Wayne will be gone by then, so they’ll have space. 

“Sounds like a good time. I could use a hand at the shop. Any particular reason you’re coming to crash with us instead of staying with Lucas or El? Or do you just miss us that much?”

“I’ve never been to Chicago and I’ve got the time off, so I figured why not?”

Why Eddie expected a straight answer, he’ll never know. He assumes it has something to do with not wanting to be around her mother for longer than she needs to and escaping the looks of concern she’ll get if she lingers around Hawkins. But those are assumptions Steve will have to suss out when she arrives. 

“I’ll let Steve know tonight and one of us will get you from the station on the 26th. And if you play your cards right I’ll let you have a recommendation space on the staff shelf.”

“Your shop would be lucky to display my choices, so really I’m doing you a favor,” she counters and Eddie can’t help but chuckle in amusement.

“Well, I’ve got to get back to work but can’t wait to see you Red.”

“Thanks, Eddie...and tell Steve thanks too.”

Before Eddie can say bye the line cuts and he likes to think his own children won’t be so ill-mannered. “Ugh, that sounded like Steve...”

Over dinner that night Eddie lets Steve know about Max’s plan and her delivery of it. 

“Of course, she just up and bought a ticket. Do you actually think she’d ask and chance us saying no? That’s not how Max operates.”

“I dunno, that seems more like a Mike move than a Max one, is all,” Eddie thinks, twirling his spaghetti around his fork. 

“Ah, see, there is the difference. Mike would just up and buy a ticket to come stay with us because he feels entitled to do it. He wouldn’t actually come to see both of us, just you and the city. But Max? Max bought a ticket and just told us to lessen the chance of rejection. Because for all the bravado Mayfield has, she’s still the kid who’d rather sit on your steps listening to you play guitar than go home. I’m just happy we can still be that for her.”

Eddie stopped eating midway through Steve’s analysis and just looks at his mate with fondness. For all of Steve’s complaints about how much the kids of their pack irritate him, it’s times like this that demonstrate his love. It really shows just how much effort Steve has put in over the years to make himself a safe haven for the kids. 

“You know, I really ought to make a mom out of you already with how well you do with them.” Eddie enjoys the blush that creeps up Steve’s neck at the suggestion and glances over to the bedroom. 

“I’m not stopping you Eds.”

There are too many yentas in this deli. Sure he got a few stares at his old place in South Bend, but these stares are making Eddie think it's time to suck it up and learn how to cook his own brisket. Steve put in the order a few weeks ago but is currently in bed wiped out from finals swallowing tums, so Eddie offered to make the trek out with Wayne.

He’s leaning against the back wall waiting for his order to come out while Wayne mutters about having braved the L. “I still don’t know why we couldn’t have just taken your car,” he grumbles, looking a little worse for wear. 

“Wayne, you served in Vietnam, but public transit is where you draw the line?” The resounding silence gives him all the answers he needs. 

“So how's married life treatin’ ya?” Wayne asks after some time, and Eddie can’t help but smile. 

“It’s good. Not a lot has changed, which I think is for the better. Had a bit of a rough patch a few months ago but turns out we just needed to get our heads out of our asses.”

Wayne nods. “It’s good that you can admit you were wrong. I remember you had trouble doing that growing up.”

“Who says I was in the wrong?” The quirked brow from Wayne makes Eddie tsk. “I really don’t appreciate that he’s become your favorite nephew you know? Stevie can do no wrong in your eyes now that you know he’s nothing like his father.”

“Oh no, I’m sure your boy can do plenty wrong. But it takes a particular kind of person to light a fire under your ass and get you moving. Now, look at you. Living on your own, running a fine store. Next thing you know you’ll be calling me to tell me you’re going to be a dad.” Wayne chuckles a bit at the last part, and Eddie scuffs the floor with his boot. 

“I mean would that be so far-fetched?”

“You got something to tell me?”

Eddie shakes his head and feels Wayne’s gaze on him. Their heart-to-hearts are infrequent. Their relationship is built between the lines of their words and usually, that’s fine with Eddie. It’s just, right now he needs  a little bit more. 

“I don’t think it’d be that far-fetched. You’re not your old man Eddie, if that’s what you need to hear. My brother only made two good decisions in his life. Marrying your mom and having you. You might have his name but you ain’t him at all.” Wayne claps his shoulder and pulls Eddie to his side for a hug.

“Harrington! Order for Harrington!” 

Eddie moves from Wayne’s embrace and goes to grab their order when he sees Wayne head towards the door. 

“Where are you going?”

“To get a cab. I’m not chancing that brisket to the train.”

They had one day between visits. It was the twenty-fifth and the shop was closed like most other places in Chicago, which lent itself to a lazy morning. 

A year ago getting Eddie out of bed was like pulling teeth, but now the alpha finds himself up first most mornings for work. The upside to his new sleep schedule is on days like this he can just stay in bed and admire Steve. His mate is still sleeping, hugging a pillow to his chest. The t-shirt he wore to bed is one of Eddie’s older Anthrax shirts, threadbare with a few holes, but Steve refuses to let Eddie toss it. For as much as his mate doesn’t nest, he hoards Eddie’s old band shirts like a dragon with a treasure. 

Rolling over, Eddie presses against Steve’s back, burying his nose in his hair. Ever since their bonding, Steve’s scent has morphed. It’s richer, almost spiced, and Eddie can’t get enough. He wonders if he also smells like this but he can’t tell. It’s a question for awake Steve. Right now he’s enjoying the sleepy Steve who is turning over to press into Eddie’s chest on instinct. After the night Steve flinched away from him, Eddie appreciates everytime Steve seeks him out. Today is no exception. 

Eddie plays with Steve’s hair and traces his hand down his back, just basking in the morning light until he notices flurries falling outside the window. Watching the snowflakes dance in the wind, Eddie wonders if Hawkins is getting snow. El runs around outside every time it does and he hopes that she’s waking up to that Christmas morning. ‘They deserve the chance to be kids’ he thinks and it sounds an awful lot like Steve. 

He watches the snowfall until Steve’s lips start to kiss his neck, nipping gently at Eddie’s faux-mark. The moment the tattoo finished healing, Steve found any excuse he could to touch it, be it with his fingers, lips, teeth, or what have you. The bond has brought out Steve’s possessive side and Eddie can’t help but indulge it like right now. 

“Making sure it’s still there baby?” he whispers, scratching at the nape of Steve’s neck. His question just earns him a nod as Steve’s affection trails up his jaw until they’re kissing. Eddie turns into Steve’s embrace and trades lazy kisses with him. The softness of the morning makes Eddie want to go back in time and slap his past self for thinking he would never have this. That his own self-doubt almost kept him from having Steve Harrington in his bed every morning and every night. Because waking up to this feeling beats any high Eddie has ever had. 

When the sunlight becomes too bright for them to ignore the morning, Eddie makes the first move to roll out of bed. “Breakfast? I’ll make it.”

“That means I’m getting pancakes because that is the only thing you can somehow make.” Steve’s face is fond as he looks over at Eddie, and he’ll take the teasing. 

“Yes, I am offering flour pancakes because we have enough potato ones in the freezer to last the rest of winter.”

“Will you ever let that go,” Steve groans, and Eddie dives back onto the bed to tackle Steve, pulling his reddening face away from the pillow he’s trying to bury it in.

“Absolutely not. I’ve never seen someone so determined to get latkes right. They’re potatoes, Steve. Hash browns.”

“I see how it is. You don’t appreciate my trial and error process. And to think next year I was going to start attempting to braise brisket. I should just stick to my waspy recipes.”

That threat makes Eddie start kissing Steve’s face all over as he begs for forgiveness. “I never said anything. In fact, thank you for taking this so seriously and I look forward to you perfecting your brisket recipe. Now let me cook for you. Do you want coffee?”

Steve’s face scrunches at the offer. “No, I don’t think I could stomach it this morning. Besides, I’ll -” 

Steve stops mid-sentence and Eddie follows his gaze to see Steve looking out the window. “It’s snowing.” The statement is so simple but Eddie sort of likes proof that Steve’s been so wrapped up in their world that he hadn’t noticed the one going on outside. 

“I wonder if it’s snowing in Hawkins. El would love it,” Steve voices, and Eddie can’t help but laugh in agreement. 

“She really would.”

The Second World War broke out at a critical moment for the Dominion Penitentiaries. The publication of the Archambault Report in 1938, after years of debate, investigation and turmoil inside and outside of Canadian prisons, laid out a series of ambitious reforms. Better training of staff, the creation of classification departments, vocational training, inmate socialization programs, psychiatric services, and new types of institutions were all envisioned by the Report. Many of the initial steps taken to implement these reforms were disrupted by the outbreak of war. Staff training overseas at HM Prison Wakefield in England was cancelled. Construction of new facilities was curtailed. Replacing old and outworn equipment in workshops became a challenge – due to both budget constraints and difficulty finding supplies. A vocational training plan to teach inmates repair of airplane motors was cancelled by the Royal Canadian Air Force needed the motors for its own training regime.

The morale of the guard staff was in bad shape: a decade of austerity, prisoner resistance, and scandal had left many officers holding temporary positions for years and work conditions remained austere. Although considerable effort had been made between 1938 and 1940 to rectify this situation – by the carrot of funding for staff clubs and organizations, and the stick of firings and transfers – the war affected these efforts to a considerable degree. Guards and instructors almost immediately began to enlist, and it became harder and harder to find replacements as the war went on. At Dorchester Penitentiary, for instance, by 1940, most of the senior officer positions, including the warden, deputy warden, and chief industrial officer, were vacant and filled by acting officers.

The war also initially posed serious issues for inmate management. In the 1930s and 1940s, all persons serving a sentence in a federal penitentiary were expected to labour, unless sick or physically unable. Work was the primary method of rehabilitation and a major method of organizing the penitentiary. Until the outbreak of war, penitentiary manufacturing was for internal use or on contract with other federal government departments. For instance, mailbags for what is now Canada Post were manufactured or repaired at most federal institutions. Many of these contracts ceased in 1939, and new war contracts were slow to come in, leaving workshops idled in some institutions. The number of prisoners had also been rising dramatically from 1937 to 1939.

Already by 1941 and 1942, aspects of this situation had started to reverse. By 1941 the numbers of prisoners would decline, precipitously, as the war economy and selective service provided alternatives to men who might otherwise steal or starve. The Departments of Defence and Supplies and Munitions awarded numerous contracts for war work at penitentiaries. Production of supplies needed for the military rapidly increased. Across Canada, inmates made a wide variety of goods for military and war use. Prison farms increased their yields to provide pork, beef, eggs and vegetables to domestic and overseas bases. The visits of journalists in mid-1943 to federal penitentiaries therefore observed the institutions in full swing in support of the Canadian war effort.

War contracts ensured that there was plenty of work to go around. The reporters toured the prison workshops, where inmates were repairing the metal frames of damaged Army cots, hammering back together broken oilcans, and repairing mail bags. A notable feature was a tailor shop, equipped with new electric machines, making tens of thousands of pillowcases for the Army. In a sign of how racialized labour operated in prison, mostly Indigenous and Chinese-Canadian inmates maintained the prison farm and ‘victory garden’ inside the walls. Finally, a team of inmates was harvesting stray logs from the Fraser River and chopping them into firewood for Vancouver’s needy or repurposing the wood for manufacturing – a practice common in the earlier 20th century but curtailed for security reasons during the Depression.

There they found the largest penitentiary in Canada abuzz with activity as inmates and staff worked towards “our national goal of defeating the Axis.” The reporter admired the “perfect order” and “impeccable organization” of the penitentiary, witnessing shift changes, lunchtime, and the exercise period first hand. They made a special tour of the farm, producing meat and vegetables for both inmates and local military barracks and training camps. The machine shop inmates were producing slings for Bren guns and aiming posts, while the carpentry shop turning out everything from folding tables to clipboards for military field use.

The most unique workshop, according to Pallascio-Morin, was producing camouflage nets for the Army. Fifty inmates under a penitentiary instructor and a corporal seconded from the Ordnance Department supervised this work. Active since 1941, by 1943 the workshop had turned out tens of thousands of nets. The Montreal journalists concluded that this war work was valuable not just because it provided supplies directly to the military. It also provided practical training and skills for released men looking for work in war industries. Concluding with a touch of irony, Pallascio-Morin thought that, without the work of men behind bars, “our country cannot be free.”

Reporters from the Ottawa Journal, Kingston Whig-Standard and the Toronto Star visited Kingston Penitentiary in late July and early August 1943. Ross Harkness of the Star was impressed by the volume of war production at Kingston Penitentiary. Inmate workers were making huge quantities of aiming posts, military cots, tents, hand insulators for workers at arsenals, and leather coats for the Merchant Marine. Furniture for the families of Royal Canadian Air Force crews stationed in the Kingston Area came from the carpenters. Two inmates turned out swagger sticks, awarded to officers trained in Brockville. It taught welding skills to short term inmates who, once released, went to work in shipyards and other production plants.

Harkness interviewed several guards and inmates, as did B.R., the journalist from the Ottawa Journal. Harkness noted the inmates he spoke to were “pleased” about helping the “war cause,” whereas B.R., noticing some not so happy looking inmates, was told by a keeper that, after all, “nobody invited them to come to prison." All three papers reported on the Red Cross blood drives, which occurred every month and saw half of the prisoners at Kingston (400 out of 775) giving blood to meet battlefield and emergency needs.

Several other institutions were making major contributions to the war effort. At Collin’s Bay Penitentiary, inmates operated a dyeing plant that converted old military coats into uniforms for prisoner of war camps across Canada. Dorchester Penitentiary employed almost a third of its inmates making or repairing boots for the Red Army fighting on the Eastern Front. Similar war work was going on at Saskatchewan and Manitoba Penitentiaries – though no reporters visited those penitentiaries. By late 1942, younger men incarcerated in penitentiaries were also allowed to enroll in courses on aviation and machine mechanics in preparation for their release. Louis St. Laurent reported to Parliament on August 6, 1943, that output had doubled since 1941, despite the large decrease in the inmate population. The Parole Board of Ontario likewise reported in November 1943 that war work inside penitentiaries and reformatories was providing valuable industrial training.

Surveys of federal prisons by the Department of Labour and Department of Education between 1941 and 1944 attributed this mobilization above all to the dedicated instructors and guards keenly aware of the necessity of their tasks and who provided a great deal of practical, hands-on vocational education in difficult situations. The Department of Labour also provided courses for officers of every institution between 1942 and 1944 focused on personnel management and leadership – possibly the first time the nascent ‘sciences’ of industrial relations and management were brought into federal prisons.

The whole picture was not so rosy, of course. The Labour and Education inspectors found that the high morale and decent training was in spite of generally poor workshops and equipment, and that at some institutions there was not even the pretence of ‘modern’ vocational training. Guards and keepers interviewed by the reporters noted that some of the skills being taught, like welding, were very useful not just in securing jobs but in committing crimes. Many expressed, however anonymously, contempt for the whole war work scheme.

Although there was a decline in admissions, especially of first time prisoners, the number of recividists and habitual offenders increased tremendously, as did young men who had not yet been called up or had deserted from the military. The older experienced prisoners were especially not keen on working hard for “screws,” no matter the cause, and most of them complained that reforms promised a decade ago had not been fully implemented or had even been curtailed due to the war. At Kingston Penitentiary, inmates circulated a petition in September 1941 to demand radios be installed so they could listen to reports “during this critical period in which world history is being made.” Demands for smoke breaks and a more relaxed work schedule were made at St. Vincent de Paul Penitentiary in 1942 and 1943. Inmates at Dorchester Penitentiary actually staged a brief slowdown in late 1942 over the extra shifts required to make Red Army boots – which were interrupting evening schooling. General complaints, though not many, appear to have been made at all institutions along these lines.

Every federal penitentiary experienced serious staffing shortages as the war went on, as many guards enlisted to serve overseas and replacements were hard to find. As a direct result of these shortages, there was an increase in escapes or attempted escapes in 1943 and 1944; most notoriously, at Manitoba Penitentiary, a long-term prisoner named Barnett was shot and killed in October 1943, and buried on the prison grounds.

Inmate disturbances occurred in 1944 at Collin’s Bay, Manitoba and Saskatchewan Penitentiaries, with whole workshops refusing to work over issues familiar from the last decade and a half: work arrangements, demands for recreation, unfair punishments or harsh punishments. In April 1944, inmates in the mailbag shop at Manitoba Penitentiary even overpowered their guards during a protest and almost broke out into the rest of the institution. At Burwash Industrial Farm, a provincial prison near Sudbury, inmates staged a sit-down strike for several days in May 1943 to demand holidays and different work arrangements.

But all in all, press criticism of institutions only began to get serious again after the war ended, in a different environment of postwar reconstruction, the end of war work, and a serious crime wave that occurred across Canada.

The decline of prisoner populations, the tapering off for a few years of organized inmate protests, the implementation of a full employment regime inside, and the few reforms made before 1939-1940 stabilized the institutions for several years – really, delaying the inevitable. The newspaper reporting was also revealing, perhaps inadvertently, of how little had changed since the first convict revolts in 1932-33. The various activities and work were mostly the same as were being done before the war. Discipline and punishment remained the same – and indeed in an era of ubiquitous military service and uniforms, the marching about of inmates and regimented routine was presented as a positive. Unfree convict labour remained central to the Canadian prison system - to the operations of the penitentiary, to its dominant ideology of ‘reformation,’ and to the daily lives of the incarcerated.

HELP QUEENIE, A 2 MONTH OLD GIRL WITH SPINA BIFIDA, GET LIFESAVING SURGERY

Queenie is a 2 month old baby girl from the Philippines with severe Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. She needs an operation ASAP to survive with her disabilities, but the cost is 400,000 Philippine Pesos, about 8,500 USD. Her parents don’t have the means to save up so much in the time frame recommended by Queenie’s doctor, so her mother has decided to fundraise online.

The operation Queenie needs is urgent, but with the Covid-19 pandemic, there aren’t any openings in the public hospitals that could provide the treatment she needs. There’s no time to wait for an opening with the pediatric neurosurgeon. Her family needs to send her to a specialist in a private hospital now.

Here is the message her mother sent after hearing about my help with the fundraisers for Kyle and Saj, who share my diagnosis:

“I would like to ask for medical and financial assistance for my daughter. She was born on May 16, 2021 at Jose Abad Santos General Hospital (mother and child) in Binondo Manila with Spina Bifida (lumbo sacral mass) myelomeningocele and the doctor said she needed to be seen by a Pediatrics Neuro Surgeon and needs immediate operation.

On the 24th, she was discharged from the Hospital and we started looking for a Hospital that had a pediatric neuro surgeon with the baby but unfortunately we couldn't find anything because all the public hospitals were full. So we decided that she would only be operated on in a private hospital, but a large amount was needed for the operation.

X-ray, ultrasound and MRI were performed on the baby and her final diagnosis was lumbosacral myelomeningocele and Hydrocephalus.

We still want to be with our daughter for a long time but we really don't have any treatment for her because a huge amount is needed for the operation. I don't have a job, and my husband is a Foodpanda Delivery Rider and we also just rent. I hope you can help our daughter.

Even small amounts are big things for us and when combined are big amounts already.

I hope you can help us. Thank you very much.”

Art Programs

FireAlpaca - 2D Art Program, Animation. Where I make most of my digital art, and paint the frames for my animations :) It is free to use, and easy to learn and use! It can make basic animations as well, such as gifs. It requires download.

Krita - 2D Art Program. Professional, free digital paint software :) I have not used it before, though I have heard good things.

GIMP - 2D Art Program, Photo Manipulation. It's free to use, but I do not like it/recommend it highly. But! If FireAlpaca and Krita don't float your stoat, try Gimp! For 2D art, but also able to emulate Photoshop to a degree ^^

Inkscape - 2D Art Program. Free to use digital illustration software. Makes 2D art :)

Of course, who can forget classics like good old MS Paint, and the new and exciting 3D MS Paint, which can both be used to create some really neat things! Classic MS Paint is available here in browser form! If you need that. I just think it's neat!

Art AI

Petalica Paint - Coloring Software. An in browser, watercolor manga style coloring software, which can (almost) effortlessly color in any of your line art pieces! I've played around with it for my Thorn illustration style piece, and enjoyed it! It is free to use, and can take user input to make the colorations more precise.

ArtBreeder - 3D Realism Software. Using Artbreeder, you can create lifelike images of your paras, planets, or potentially even fursona, using the intricate AI they let you work with for free! A premium version exists, but most functions are fully usable without - though I recommend donating ^^ You can randomly generate, or prune and shape what you make until its perfect! Slow to use and get the hang of, but very worth it! Artbreeder is also pioneering an intriguing animation software to go alongside their product! Browser based.

3D Software

Blender - 3D Modeling, Animation. The best (in my opinion) free 3D modelling software.

MagicaVoxel - 3D Pixel Art. Free to use! Could be interesting :)

MikuMikuDance - 3D Rigging. Anime style rigging and animation software, free to use, and certified internet artefact! Has stood the test of time, and is still used and loved today. Can support ports of many kinds of assets, including, I believe, those from Blender, and of course those that are downloaded. DA has a bunch of old MMD communities you can raid for assets!

Animaze - Face Rigger. Use 3D models and a webcam to watch your paras talk! Models can be made in Blender, downloaded online, or even from CHARAT V, CHARAT GENESIS sister app!

Character Creators

CHARAT GENESIS - 2D Character Creator. Browser based anime style character creator, with multiple crops and poses, and infinitely customizable options. It is legitimately insane. Has a 3D function called CHARAT V which can apparently convert characters made in CHARAT GENESIS into 3D models compatible with Face Rig and Animaze!

V-Katsu - 3D Character Creator. Free on steam! Anime style, intensive character creator, by the same people who made Koikatsu, and Koikatsu Party, two amazingly detailed 3D hentai makers. While V-Katsu is a SFW VTuber maker, if you're looking for NSFW anime content, you could always spend roughly $70 on the full NSFW versions. V-Katsu requires a translation mod (free online as well) which you have to install, or the ability to read Kanji <3 Works with VR tech.

V-Roid Studios - 3D Character Creator. Free on steam! Anime style, fairly in depth character creator, that allows for some degree of digital 3D hand sculpting, particularly with their amazing hair engine, to get your paras looks perfect!

And, of course, Picrew has thousands of character creators of various styles and quality uploaded by the artists who made them! Also, honestly I think we as a society should embrace making dinky chibis in Gacha Life. IDK why everyone is mean to the gacha kids, like we weren't all cringe at some point,

World Design

HomeStyler - 3D and 2D Room Designer. Make a model of an interior for a home or building, using real 1:1 furniture of IRL brands! Apparently this is free to use, though there is a premium version, and  it offers 3D and 2D models.

Map to World - 3D Planet Maker. Turn your fantasy world into a 3D model of the planet. Put maps directly on, or design the surface and textures of your world. Takes a lot of getting used to, but it is AMAZING. Free to use, and browser based!

PlanetMaker - 3D Planet Maker. Make a customized 3D planet! Free to use browser site! I have never used this, but I would love to mess around with it sometime! Allows you to add orbital rings, change textures, and more at the click of a mouse.

If on sale, I also recommend snagging a copy of the Sims, particularly 3 or 4, for character creation and world design. Maybe not the best gameplay without mods, but it's also a load of fun, and very easy to add custom content to! Minecraft also. But you just need Minecraft, in general. Beyond its ability to fairly faithfully recreate structures from your paracosms, it's just Good.

Construct 3 - 2D Game Creator. Beginner level game making :) Drag-and-drop if/then style programming.

GameSalad - Codeless 2D Game Creator. Drag and drop style/no coding, beginner friendly. Free version available!

Solpeo - 2D Game Creator. HTML5 based game engine for 2D and isometric game development. Some programming knowledge needed. Platforms supported: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer 9+. Free version available.

Stencyl - Codeless 2D Game Creator. Drag and drop style building/no coding skills needed. Has editable templates!

Scratch - 2D Game Creator. Very easy to use and totally free, though relatively basic!

Unity - 3D, 2D, and VR Game Creator. Make games with 3D software. Import your own assets (Blender compatible) or download free options, or buy the rights to models. Works for 3D and 2D games. Free version available, and now works with VR tech!

Unreal Engine - 3D Game Creator. Extremely advanced 3D game developer. Highly customizable. Free to use!

Twine - Text-based Game Creator. Use a map to make a branching paths text-based story game. Free to use.

Squiffy - Text-based Game Creator. have used Squiffy and it can make some really, truly incredible things. Can take a while to pick up, and learn how to use to its full potential. Free to use! Has an online and offline library of player creations you can get inspiration from!

Quest - Text-based Game Creator. I've never used this, but it seems cool! Use it to make interactive text-based DND game adventures in browser.

Ren'Py - Visual Novel Creator. Visual novel engine, that is well acclaimed, and of course, free to use!

Companion AI

Replika - 3D Companion.

Kajiwoto - Chatbot Companion. Customizable, learning AI you can shape into a personality. Communicates via Discord like chat box.

Organization

Toyhou.se - Character Gallery. A customizable library where you can upload all of your paras and characters for the public to view! Free to use, but requires a premium member to invite you!

Refsheet - Character Gallery. I haven't used it before, but I've heard good things, and that it's a suitable alternative to toyhou.se if you can't get an invite!

Notebook.AI - Character Gallery. I haven't used it before, but I've heard good things, and that it's a suitable alternative to toyhou.se if you can't get an invite!

World Anvil - World Building Toolset. Like character galleries, but for worlds and their lore :)

Scabard - World Building Toolset. Aimed at DnD campaigners, but I reckon it'll be useful for many!

YARPS - World Building Toolset. More focused around story and lore than Scabard or World Anvil, and looks beautiful! Still in its prototype stage, however.

Pinterest - Photo Organizer. Look at, collect, and sort images into boards. Personalizes your feed based on that, and is free to use and join! However, unlike their myriad of wonderful recipes, DIY tutorials, and the likes - a lot of the images are uploaded by second parties and not credited, so be careful reuploading anything you find! Also great for finding outfits and art inspo for your paras!

Generators

Fantasy Name Generator - Name Generators. Does what it says on the tin! Generates fantasy names. Is a lovely website, run by a purportedly lovely woman.

Fantasy Map Generator - Map Generator. Randomly generates a fictional map, which you can view in 2D or 3D.

Donjon RPG Generator - Multiple Generators. Can make maps, weapons, items, etc.

Seventh Sanctum - Multiple Generators. One of my favorites from high school! Does all kinds of things - the standard items, spells, and names - but also prompts, backstories, characters, and even comedy generators!

ShindanMaker - Multiple Generators. User created and uploaded, any kind of generator you can imagine, of varying complexity. And when I say any generator? I mean ANY generator.

Audio

Audacity - Record and Edit Audio. What can't Audacity do? I love Audacity to death. At surface level, it records audio. I've used it to record voices for my paras, and get audio for animations and games I've worked on. I cannot recommend it enough. Comprehensive editing, and with some investigation, it can do so, so much more than just record simple dialogue.

FL Studios - Compose. Compose music with an unlimited free trial. Upgrades available for purchase!

Indie Game Music - Royalty Free Music Library. Free to use Indie Game Music. What it says on the box!

AudioJungle - Royalty Free Music and Audio Library. Thousands of free to use audio clips!

Online Piano - Someone could use this, for recording, or just messing around. I've seen plenty of paras who play piano, this could just be used for fun!

Online Guitar - Same reasons as above, but this site looks kinda sketchy. Use at your own risk or reward! Audio

For real, if you ever need music, sound effects, or really any MP3 clips that can be used without infringing on copyright laws, just search 'royalty free' (music/audio/insert thing here) same applies for photos! Make sure the source is reputable, however.

W3Schools - Coding. Learn the basics of coding, for free, online!

Miscellaneous

Debut Video Capture - Screen Recorder. Record game footage and let's plays for free! Professional and home versions. I see a few of our community members have paras who run YouTube channels, and I thought these might help! It could be a nice way to connect your parames. YouTube quality <3

Pixton - Comic Maker. Comic making website. I have no experience with this at all, but some may find it useful!

Picfont - Image Editor. Puts customizable text on an image. I used these for @paraesthetics paracosm header edits <3 It has a premium version (???) but the free version has all functions, but it crashes regularly (honestly seems timed :/) but once you get it down, it's a very quick process, and you won't have to worry about that at all.

Itch.io - Publishing. You can publish your self made games here :)

Korsakow - ??? Described as, "The Future of Storytelling" and is apparently a way to create interactive films. I *just* found out about this, but thought I should include it for someone who may know how to use and appreciate it! Free? Unknown, at the moment.

Tips and Tricks

Animation Done Easy

Our forefather's of internet animation used MS Paint, Windows Movie Maker, and Audacity. All of these, or their equivalents, are free on standard computers. I, personally, use FireAlpaca - which works just as well, if not better, than MS Paint for animation - but takes longer, and definitely lacks that retro feeling. I also use my trackpad to draw and animate everything, so its doable, but probably not totally comfortable, to animate like this for most people :)
