please could you do a tutorial on how you enhance the colouring of a gif to be really vibrant in one colour without it changing the coloring of the rest of the gif? you do it really well and it looks great!!
hii, thank you anon!! and yes, i will grab different psds i have around my laptop and explain how i achieved that coloring. very long tutorial under the cut!
it's a bit hard for me to explain how my brain works when it comes to selecting the type of coloring/scenes i want to gif so please bear with me lmao. okay so first things first, i always try to choose scenes that are in the same section of the color wheel, this makes things easier in photoshop.
Tumblr media
i will use this gif as an example
Tumblr media
i chose this particular scene to turn it green because blues and cyans are close to the green tones in the color wheel, so that's gonna make things WAY easier in photoshop, especially if the subject is moving. another tip is to find scenes where there's a color that's really separated or isolated from the rest, that helps me so much in ps because then i can basically change its color without worrying about turning her legs the color i chose.
i don't apply all these tips at the same time because it truly depends on the case but i tried changing the color of the same gif to red with hue/saturation and it looks quite good as well since the blue is really separated from the rest:
Tumblr media
now things get a bit more complicated, because now that taylor's bodysuit has the same tones as her skin tone editing everything gets a bit harder, bc let's say i want her legs to look a bit more purple-ish since they're a bit yellow and i want to tone that down (another tip: look at the color wheel to figure out which opposite color you need to cancel out a particular one you want to get rid of) i usually go liiiittle by little with selective color and i only work in the yellows and reds (sometimes magentas), this is trial and error, drag the tiny arrows in each color to see what looks best or what looks somewhat decent lol. this is how the finished psd would look like, i only had to tweak the yellow section in selective color, and that worked out well!
Tumblr media
that's usually what i do 90% of the time. other times i try to edit the color just a bit, so i can further separate it more in case it still picks up similar tones that are around it.
_
other tip i have is that most of the times i choose scenes where the subject doesn't move that much, especially if i'm changing the color of something in particular.
Tumblr media
like this lwymmd gif, it's a very radical change in color so i had to use a brush and stuff to make the red turn white, but see how there's barely any movement? that's the type of scenes you want to use when you want to change its color (especially if it's something as contrasting and different as white) this one had a combination of hue/saturation and using a brush with a green color for the most part and selective color to finish tweaking her skin tone.
Tumblr media
for example since the red was super isolated i didn't have to tweak much, but for example when you want to include a bunch of colors you can play with the slides that are circled in teal to tell photoshop "i want you to include this specific tone in your color selection" so then you can desaturate it and increase the lightness (that's how you turn anything to white) or change it to another color, whatever you choose. that's what i did for the midnights bodysuit:
Tumblr media
i dragged the shit out of those sliders lmfao, but it's how i got to change the color in a uniform and faster way.
-
hue/saturation is my favorite adjustment because i loooove turning things white/black bc of two reasons: makes the scene so unique, bc no one has seen the red dress from lwymmd white, so it automatically stands out AND if for example you're making an orange set and you have a random color that you don't need (like blue, or green, etc,. again, make sure they're a bit isolated at least and that they are not close in the color wheel) you can always turn them white or black to enhance even more the orange! it's what i did with this gif. my focus were pinks, yellows and oranges, so i got rid of the blues/purples/cyans by desaturating them and add lightness to them (like i did with the rep gif)
Tumblr media
when it comes to enhancing a color that already exists in the scene i take some liberties, but it might not apply to every single scene. sometimes i do discard gifs bc it's not working how i want to. i just use selective color to adjust anything and again i go little by little.
-
Tumblr media
another example of me changing the color and using a different technique: halsey isn't moving at all so that gives me the chance to change the background to anything i want, in this case i used hue/saturation but in a different way, i selected colorize and increased the saturation. that way you're turning your gif whatever color you choose. with a layer mask i then got rid of the parts i didn't want to be affected by this change.
Tumblr media
-
Tumblr media
and same with this one, got rid of the green because it's a very isolated color so that makes things easier when it comes to change its color or get rid of it. and for this set i went for an all pink color palette so see how me desaturating it and turn it into white makes the pink pop even more? it always depends on what your set is going to look like, i could've changed it to blue or purple depending on the color combo.
i think this is everything i can think of, since i color every gif from scratch one case might not apply to another one, so pls if you have any doubts about a particular gif i colored don't hesitate and ask! i'd be happy to help and explain!

Design Process - Guidebook
Sawgrass - pretty standard mudwing design. i gave him embedded emeralds and a tail band to signify him as royal
Egret- trying to incorporate pale mudwing designs. i gave her orange to represent the "beak" of an egret.
Anhinga - I gave her both orange and pale markings to tie her to egret's design
Bayou - pale blue teardrop gems because shes a nervous wreck :heart:
Copperhead - i gave him copperhead snake patterning and blue flowers from his rainwing bf
Possum - i tried to invoke possum patterns in his design. did it work? eh
Olive - standard green mudwing but the red represents how sometimes olives are stuffed with red peppers. i have never eaten an olive in my life
Coypu - have you guys SEEN coypus. they have orange teeths
Moccasin - i assume tui meant moccasin as in the snake and not the. shoe? so i designed her after the snake
Taupe - i designed her after taupe (animal) but also a little bit of taupe (color)
Warthog - pig boy
Wisemind - ew. gross
Python - python patterning. i kind of made her similar to anaconda's design
Jacaranda - PURBLE. i love her design. in my hc ancient rainwing queens had skeleton markings. shes so silly i love her :heart:
Comet - I gave him the markings i usually give prophets but blacked out instead
mindhealer - purble^2
Bonecruncher/Greentalon - the wiki lists them as 'bonecruncher' but they wanted to be called greentalon so that felt mean : (. potted plant bc gardener
Beryl - pink skywings i love you
Jasper - im really proud of the lighter stripes he has. like a jasper
Tailwind - blacksmithing skywing. so cool. basically a desaturated canyon design
Canyon - i gave him p similar colors to tourmaline just to add onto that extra layer of hate scarlet had towards her daughter. gaudy.
Firestorm - Basically my scarlet design with a slight orange gradient. Scarlet was the only daughter she ever liked so it makes sense theyd be similar
Snapper - red snapper
Cardinal - baby boy :heart:
Igloo - brick pattern bc igloo
Snowstorm (Father) - white snowy pattern bc snowstorm
Snowstorm (Brother) - the cloak i gave him signifys he works at one of the temples mentioned in this section
Caribou (Bard) - standard icewing with caribou horns. and brown eyes bc i couldnt resist
Caribou (Mother) - same cloak as brother snowstorm. teal icewing. brown eyes.
Caribou (Sister) - similar design to her father, just with caribou horns. and brown eyes
Caribou (Grandmother) - green icewing real...
Caribou (Daughter) - babey... i made her slightly more purple than the bard
Caribou (Friend) - orange icewing omg....
Caribou (Princess) - one of my fav designs ever. brown icewing. im love her. her horns are so big.
Snowstorm (Advisor) - at first i wasnt sure about the dark blue but i think i dig it
Monarch I - I made those gradient face masks indicative of silkwing royalty, plus the frilly antennae and the massive wings and silk glands on ankles. eye wings bc thats p common in moths
Monarch II - sun lady : ]
Diadem - literally my monarch design but blue
Cicada - my lady cicada design but more pink
Tawny - technically they never say her tribe but considering this is before the hivewings split off i can assume shes a beetlewing. lightning pattern on her elytra bc shes mentioned during a lightning storm.
Magnolia - white and pink frill like magnolia flowers. lichtenburg scar on her face and neck
Tortoiseshell - similar to my tortoiseshell i design but with more hivewing features. map holder and aviation goggles bc clearsight said shes good at aerial mapping
Zelkova - split down the middle bc twins.
Silverwash - literally my monarch design but greyscale minus the wings. since shes the first "silkwing" mentioned in the book of clearsight i figured shes probably one of the early queens from when the tribe first split and gave her some slight beetlewing vibes (the extra snout horns)
The Prophetess - clearsight inspired, also a little baphomet coded maybe? it didnt come through in the final design but whatevs
Rowan - clearly based on romeo from romeo and juliet. red and heart patterns
Juniper - clearly based on juliet from romeo and juliet. blue and heart patterns
Ash - clearly based on anne from anne of green gables. ash trees are not orange but anne had orange hair
Guava - clearly based on gilbert from anne of green gables. guavas are pink : ]
Linden - linden trees have yellow flowering so i tied her to my sundew design. also i think she and sequoia were in lesbians with each other

What made you decide to create your own color palette for trolls? Genuine question asked with zero judgment, I’m just curious about how you started experimenting with that and what inspired you!!
Honestly, it started off because I'm actually a big fan of mostly monochrome designs - usually just black-grey-white and then an eyecatcher colour.
But fantrolls always had the orange horns/sclera, and it always just... slightly bugged me a bit? I'm not the most experienced with advanced colour theory so whenever I tried to make a more cool-toned image, the warm oranges would always throw it off, even when I tried to desaturate or add blues or purples to them. It'd look muddy.
Back in 2015, I drew two images of Cereba and Aelynn and really only wanted to use monochrome + blood colour, so I ended up with this palette.
Tumblr media
I used this a few more times over the years in other drawings as well and honestly, I still like it but I think making the sclera blood-coloured looked. Hm. It just wasn't compatible with some of the stuff I wanted to do and could look bad because of the iris being blood-colour too.
There was a brief time where I had it so the horns were black and the hair was black too, but they just blended in too much, and that's when I experimented with changing the hair. For a little while, I just added a tint of blood colour and then I was like NAH GO HARD
And also! I just got sick of always drawing black hair! I think black hair is nice and all, but it's limiting when it's seen as the rule especially when you have so many characters! I really like bright colours! I like the contrast between the clothes and the hair! I like the ability to have colour or black and have that seen as something not unusual! Having that limited to the clothes only wasn't enough for me!
Most importantly, I just think it looks nice. :D

These are Micelium and Powketroo, the monsters representing the Psychic and Physical types in Ban Ma! Reposing Micelium’s experiment page since I changed a few features.
Poltegoat+Luscangel
Dracumulus+Canaroc
Jelvysprite+Cruistacean
Toxifarce+Suncrower
Any feedback is appreciated :) there will be more information on them under the cut
Micelium is a monster with two brains, in the “mushroom” and the “mouse.” The change it goes through is supposed to be how at first they have a fine relationship, but eventually grow angry at each other (the top head wanting more control, and the bottom head being annoyed). The last stage shows their compromise, and how they have equal control and are stronger because of it.
Powketroo was originally based off of a Nokemon (2nd stage), but I thought of it as a monster that was really curious, but that usually looks like it wanting to punch something. The older Powketroos put them in their pockets so they can calm down and don’t get in trouble. The first Powketroo has “kneepads” of fur
Design Pages:
Re-using Micelium’s old page, so I made an entire one for Powketroo. I’m not sure if I will continue to do it like this though. Please say if you prefer before/after or just the drawings ^^
MICELIUM:
Most of it is already said here. The only changes here are that
Micelium 1 has a brighter color
Micelium 3 has claws on it’s feet (not sure why it wasn’t there in the first place-)
POWKETROO
Powketroo 1 is the same (besides the eyes), no before and after, I’m not sure if I like the desaturated blue more or not I’m happy with it either way though
Powketroo 2 gets pupils, and its also a bit more straight and less round. It also gets kangroo claws, and has fur on it’s knees (?), showing that it doesn’t need the kneepads from the first stage anymore. The tail also isn’t curled up all the time.
Powketroo 3 has the most changes: the earbrow’s fluff goes on the bottom, it gets pupils. The shoulder fluffs do not have a yellow accent, the yellow feathers on the first one at the back of it’s tail are just a big tuft of fur now, and it gets claws on its paws. Also, it is usually it’s big tail, that’s similar to an arm. I think it looks more intimidating and unique now
Foils:
Foils were explained in Luscangel’s and Poltegoat’s post, but to sum it up, they’re basically shinies from Pokemon.
Micelium: It’s first Foil is based off of your typical zombie- greens and purple for rotting skin and guts, with the mushroom being brain colored. The second foil is a palette swap with Powketroo- this was hard to do for both of them because they don’t share the same amount of colors, and because colors on one doesn’t really look the best on the other. I think it turned out okay though. The third one is based off of the Foil I gave it in my first post for it, but I modified the colors a bit and I’m happier with how it is now. Lab Rat Micelium isn’t really anymore though.
Powketroo: The first Foil didn’t have an idea in mind. I didn’t know what to do so I just went to a color palette generator. second one is with Micelium’s colors- this one was hard to do but i ended up not using the pink since the other three are more relevant to Micelium. The third one is supposed to represent Physical typing, which is basically like the fighting type from Pokemon. I associated orange with it, and black/white because of karate uniforms, but it kind of looks more like a fox? I think with the other combinations i tried looked worse, so I’m happy :)
Pixel Art
MICELIUM: 1′11″ / 58 cm, 3′7″ / 109 cm , 7′5″ / 226 cm
POWKETROO: 2′5″ / 75 cm, 3′11″ / 119 cm, 7′9″ 236 cm

Well, I guess this is as good a time as any to talk about my muses’ color schemes.
Tumblr media
Aleksei - White, purple, and brown
I’ll admit, Aleksei’s color scheme is pretty arbitrary. His eyes are brown and his hair is white because I wanted him to look like Alina, and the purple came after because I just thought it suits him.
Tumblr media
Annabelle - Yellow, white, and blue
I wanted Annabelle to look harmless and innocent, so I went for a doll-like appearance. And when I think of a doll, I usually think of blonde hair and blue eyes. And, besides, blue and yellow go very well together!
Tumblr media
Aspen - Blue and yellow
I wasn’t thinking about how Aspen’s color scheme would look at the time I made  it. I drew it for a drawing challenge - Draw a fairy. Make its skin your favorite color (Blue) and its wings the color of your birth season (Yellow for Summer).
There were other tenets for the challenge, but I just listed the relevant ones
Tumblr media
Dyanna - Black, brown, and green
Remember this picture? Well, I saw it (Back in January, and popped it into the queue and it only came out in April) and thought that the green dress was so pretty on the girl, so I decided that Dyanna’s color would be green. Also, as I type this, I’m now realizing that the green gives her a sort of forest-y color scheme - Her black hair is the color of the shadows between the trees, her eyes and skin the color of the wood, and her clothes are the leaves. And I feel that, for gentle, practical Dyanna, a forest is a perfect metaphor.
Tumblr media
Ekaterina and Dmitri - Red, black, and white
I came up with Katia’s color scheme first, and I’ve been scrambling to figure out Dmitri’s ever since. Then I made that first picture of them hugging, and noticed that they had the same color scheme! Red, black, and white. These two come as a set, and I realized that I should have their color scheme reflect that, so those are their official colors now.
Tumblr media
Elias - Black white, and red every once in a while as a treat
Black to represent his shadows, white because it compliments the black of his hair and eyes, and red was tacked on after because it’s a lucky color in Asian culture.
Tumblr media
Little ghost - Monochrome, a little bit of blue
Ghost has been dead so long that much of its humanity has eroded away, and I wanted its design to reflect that as much as possible - And I thought that just getting rid of its mouth wasn’t really enough. So I desaturated it completely, and then realized how boring that looked. So I decided to give it big, bright eyes. But what color? Brown? Ehh... If brown is too bright, it’ll turn orange. Green? Nah, acid green isn’t very easy on the eyes.
And then I tried blue and JACKPOT. Bright, vibrant blue, so long as it’s not too pale a shade, isn’t eye-burning, and blue goes very nicely with white, grey (Ghost’s other colors), and black (Background).
Tumblr media
Penelope - Black, white, and orange
She’s Asian. Koi fish are pretty. ‘Nuff said.
I dunno how her green/blue bodice fits into the equation, though
Tumblr media
Shani and Livna - Red and blue, and white
...
For most of my other characters, I made the color scheme to fit them. Not these two, though. I made them to fit the color scheme.
Tumblr media
Valeriya - Pale. That’s it. Pale
An early version of the No Place Like Home verse was the first incarnation of the Sobakin family, so Pakhta came before Valeriya. In Before the Full Moons Rise, I had no reason for the Sobakin family to have a dog, and I also needed the kids to have a guide through the world of the fairies, without that guide giving everything away too early on... So I took Pakhta and gave her that role.
But a dog (Or a wolf, which is what I changed her into because Rule of Cool) is too stupid to be fantasy-story guide, so I turned that wolf into a girl who had been turned into a wolf, and because Pakhta is all white, I had to have Valeriya, her human equivalent, reflect that.

hello! i see that you are very skilled with coloring and blending (its really good! you should be proud of yourself!) I dont have a lot of experience with coloring, traditional or otherwise. Would you mind giving a few tips??
First off: thank you!
This topic is really broad, but I tried to think of some basic things that I know beginners struggle with, so I hope some of these tips help? If anyone wants something more specific please let me know!
~~~
Okay let’s just get this one out of the way: it mostly applies to digital art only, but really try to avoid super saturated colors unless you’re specifically going for “eye strain” art (and even then, there’s nuance to what works).
Tumblr media
This is an over exaggeration, but when beginners look at the color wheel it can be difficult to figure out how to use the “muddy” colors in the center and they default to the brighter side. Don’t be afraid of the muddy colors!! Those are going to be your best friend!! Bright colors are fine, but don’t shy away from using desaturated colors too (else you might end up with something like this).
~~~
Another tip I have (for both digital and traditional) is to never shade with pure black or white OR exactly the same color you used as a base, but darker. This makes a drawing look pretty flat. It’s better to use a color that’s darker, but also a slightly different color than your base color.
For example: instead of shading his yellow hair with a darker yellow (adding black), I used a darker orange color. Same for his skin, and while the difference on the green tunic isn’t as noticeable, I shaded that with a slightly bluer tone.
Tumblr media
(Even eyes and teeth are not pure white. You can use pure white and black in drawings but for beginners I would try to avoid it.)
~~~
However I think the MOST important thing I would stress when regarding color is that COLOR IS RELATIVE. If you want to paint someone with a red shirt underwater, that red shirt is probably going to be colored dark purple instead- but because we can see the blue around it and the context clues, our brains will register it as red.
For example, even though this is a night scene, you can still tell what the colors are supposed to be.
Tumblr media
However, if I take away that background and replace it with a stark white background, you can see how dark and different the colors are.
Tumblr media
If I want to establish an atmosphere or have any sort of background, I always make sure to do the background first. It’s much easier to match your character to the background than the other way around.
Also, I tend to avoid coloring the character first because that can lead to more average looking pieces. In this, I colored the character the way I normally would on a white background, and then added the same background from above- it still works, but it also looks more average and doesn’t set an atmosphere as well.
Tumblr media
Here are two more examples I did really quick. Not the best, but hopefully it gets the point across.
Tumblr media
I hope this helps some??? Let me know if there’s anything more specific I can help with!
What is your step by step drawing process like, if you don't mind my asking?
I'll just use Sunstealer as an example since he's the most recent thing I did. Under the cut because this is horridly long. You wanted step by step, I’ll give you step by step.
That is a threat.
And every step of the way I use a sharp pen with high pressure sensitivity and a sharp eraser with high pressure sensitivity, unless stated otherwise.
1. Alright, sketch first of all. I pick a whatever color, set a folder to multiply, and add layers in it. I start with the face/helm and take moderate care with making it look decent.
2. From there I sketch the rest of the the pic, preferably very loosely. I aim to not lift the stylus from the pad very much and instead just SCRIBBLE lines into the vague shape I'm after.
3. Set the sketch folder’s opacity real damn low, like somewhere under 10%, create a new folder, set it to multiply, and this is where the horrid amount of layers and layer folders I use comes in. But, you can see I actually did a second sketch of the arms (and legs, though that isn’t visible here) ‘cause I couldn’t make them look right based on my initial sketch.
4. On top of my second sketch I draw the rest of the clean lines. The lines were drawn with this purplish color, btw. I use something akin to it pretty often in my lineart.
Tumblr media
5. After all that I use the Auto Select tool to select everything outside my lineart, e.g. everything I don’t want to have color. I then invert the selection and lay down my flats. At this point I used the gold as my base color, but then added separate folders for each following color, clipping them to the gold base layer below. In the case of black, its folder has a whole bunch of layers while I tried to figure out what parts to color black. With layers for the different parts, I can just click them on and off to see what things look like with or without them.
6. Okay, now to the meat of things. I use a correction layer (hue/saturation/luminosity in this case) to change the base gold to a far darker color that I can easily edit later without losing my initial color choice, and create a new layer on top of all my colors, set it on multiply, and in this case used a sort of peachy color to add my first shadows on top of the whole entire picture. At this point the exact colors in use don’t matter one bit, though, as long as you see what you’re doing.
7. I create a second multiply layer on top of the last one, and go over the whole thing again, adding deeper shadows, this time using bright red. But again, color doesn’t matter yet. I like contrast too, so you can see some areas turn almost black.
8. Shinies! We add our first Add (Glow) layer (that can be named differently in other programs, in SAI it was just “Luminosity”). Once again, color doesn’t matter, just as long as you see what you’re doing, but I was working with about the same peach I used on my first multiply layer. And how I add the shines is basically just color the glow over the whole area, then use the eraser in sweeping and circling motions to remove parts of it. I don’t treat each plate/portion separated by lines individually, because then you’ll just end up with mismatched areas that don’t communicate with each other at all and just fight. (Remember to erase the shine from over your shadows too. Auto Selecting the shadows and erasing the glow from the selected area is a good trick.)
Tumblr media
9. More shinies! This time we want it to show up as a bit lighter/brighter than our previous shiny. Using a brighter color or higher opacity does the trick. I do the same thing of coloring large areas and erasing shapes out of them afterwards, but this time I make it argue with my first glow layer a bit. Some overlap is good, but I also want them to live their own lives. (I included a view of the second glow layer alone, but I worked with both glow layers visible.)
10. We now have two multiply layers and two glow layers. What we also have, is a base color (gold) and separate folders for every subsequent color (black, face, insignia in this case. And optic, but let’s not touch that yet). We now copy our two multiply layers and two glow layers, and move copies of them into each folder (sans optic) and clip them to the base layer in that folder. We move copies of the multiply and glow layers right over our base layer too, below our other color folders. (I deleted the glow layers from the “face” folder because I don’t want the face to be as shiny, and the multiply layers from the “insignia” folder because there’s actually no shadow over the insignia.) We can make our original multiply and glow layers invisible so they’re not messing things up, and what we should have is... The same exact thing as in step 9. Wow.
11. Now we actually make it look good! Though let’s just color the optic while we’re at it so it’s not all empty. Anyway, this is the stage where we really start to think about color and opacity. I want a neutral lighting to showcase his colors best, so let’s see how we get that. The thing we’ll just do is use Tonal Correction > Hue/Saturation/Luminosity to change our multiply and glow layers one by one, starting from our first multiply layer. I turn the other multiply and glow layers off so I can see what I’m doing and and tweak the colors until I get something that doesn’t scream “interesting lighting”, because I want neutral lighting.
Tumblr media
12. Then I go through all of the layers one by one and do the same thing to each of them. The reason I have them each on separate layers is exactly this, that I can affect all of the drawing’s colors individually and make them look just as I want to and always have the option of just going back and easily editing things. I also add a glow layer to the face, but with a brush rather than a pen so I get a softer look, buuut then add a second glow layer with a low opacity to add just a little bit of sharp light in there. And now we have a thing! But it looks pretty flat, doesn’t it? We don’t want that.
Tumblr media
13. First of all, let’s add some soft glow to the gold. New glow layer below our multiply and other glow layers, choosing a soft color to accentuate the gold, and then using either a brush or airbrush we add just a bit of color in there. Arrows point to the spots where I added it, because we want the effect to be subtle and easy to miss.
14. We can do better than that, though. Let’s add a multiply layer and do the same thing, adding juuuust hints of darker color here and there. It adds a touch more depth, but again, we want it to be easy to miss.
15. Let’s have a look at the black, next. You may have noticed I turned off the second glow layer on it entirely, and that’s because it was decided that the black shouldn’t be as shiny as the gold. We still want to add some life to it though, and because Sunstealer’s black tints towards blue, let’s make some blue happen by adding a glow layer, and again, very softly with a brush or airbrush, add just hints of color in there.
Tumblr media
16. It still doesn’t really good though, does it? It’s pretty boring and lifeless despite our efforts. More layers, then! Some fucking edges, this time. A glow layer above all of our existing layers and folders to affect all of them (except optic, ‘cause optic doesn’t need it), take good ol’ bright white, turn the opacity down a bit, and add sharp light to the edges. Like, all the edges that are touched by light. Seams, everything. We want this motherfucker to shine.
17. Okay, now do the same, except this time on the shadows. The layer is on lower opacity and I didn’t use white but desaturated blue instead. Just add a bit of reflected light in there.
18. Slowly getting there, but let’s do a couple more things. First of all, warm color. Basically, I just like to slap a random color on top of the whole damn thing when I’m finishing a drawing, using either a color, a glow, or a normal layer, depending which one gets me the best results that time. Or, all three, if that’s what I feel like. This time I used a color layer with briiiiiight neon orange. I switched the layer to normal and opacity to 100% so you can see where it’s actually applied, which is, again, on top of all the layers. A pretty large area, but even on 100% opacity with a normal layer you can see it’s pretty transparent. If I had wanted to do a more interesting lighting, I would’ve left it more visible and maybe added another similar layer in a different color, but I wanted neutral lighting so we leave it as just a tiny, tiny hint in there.
Tumblr media
19. Still not done. Colors reflect other colors, so let’s make that happen on the black and have it reflect our gold some.
20. Almost there. What are we missing? Color correction, that’s what. I didn’t do much of it for this piece, but with some I really play around with correction layers and layers set to overlay and whatnot. But let’s see what we have here. First of all, there’s one brightness/contrast correction layer affecting the gold only, increasing the contrast so things look a bit brighter.
Tumblr media
21. There’s also a second brightness/contrast correction layer, this one simply increasing the brightness a bit. It’s mostly for the sake of the black, because I wanted to make it look a bit more blue by making it lighter, but it worked to make the whole image a little brighter along with it. Aside from the optic, that’s still on top of everything else. But like said, how many corrective layers I have going on depends entirely on what I’m doing. In some cases I can have around a dozen in effect, not all of them always affecting the entire image, but split around to do their thing on different layers.
22. But speaking of the optic! It glows, so let’s make it glow with two layers on top of both of the “color” and “lines” folders. One layer is for the blurred red glow, the second is for the sharply reflected light.
23. And for things like these I like a simple background, which I generally do by just using a couple of gradients and altering their color to whatever looks decent. I also often add an outline to the entire character in pieces like this to make the character pop a bit more, by just copying my base color layer and performing gaussian blur on it.
Tumblr media
WHEEZE. That’s that, though. Finished product can be viewed here.
Oh, and ctrl+shift and tap will jump you straight to the layer you tapped on. Makes moving between layers and finding the damn layer you wanted to edit a hell of a lot easier.
Annnnnd obsessively naming layers and layer folders so you can tell what the heck they actually are when you have way, way many layers to work with.
*thumbs up*
name: wildheart specise: fire element draco-morphiad (explained below) pronouns: she/her
specise info: draco-morphiads are, basically, a specise of sexless magic cat furries. each one of them controls one of twelve elements (although two of them are special); fire (fire elements are also able to control one type of igneous rock, differing depending on the individual), water, earth, air, plant, plague, void (this void being concentrated everythingness and named for its pitch black color, there may only be one void element at a time and only two have ever been recorded), quantum strings (this has been proven to be possible, but never recorded), gemstone, metal, sound and light. draco-morphiads have a unique internal anatomy, their body cavity is filled entirely with liquid magic. this magic contains their consiousness and, when needed, forms organs to keep the draco-morphiad alive. draco-morphiads also have whats known as elemental bits, an extra part of their body made from their element or regular body part modified by it. draco eye color is also generally dictated by their element. just a draco-morphiad generation (they live tens of thousands of years) ago, they had an expansive interdimensional (this takes place in a multiverse) empire. but for reasons now lost to time, it fell. the specise took heavy casualties, although it was nowhere close to extinction. theyre rarer now, and... scattered, to say the least. their natural ability to create interdimensional portals doesnt help that. given that draco-morphiads are sexless, their native language's pronouns were dependant on element, but wildheart was raised by a sexed specise tens of thousands of years after the near extinction of the language (plus draco-morphiads were invented to explain her so i think she should get to keep her pronouns).
apperance: wildheart has brown fur, which turns abruptly black (like, theres a straight, non-gradiant divide between the back and brown) at the waist, so approximately half of her is black and half is brown . she has blood red eyes. fire element eyes are usually orange, but this is explained. she has a pair of half-crescent obsidian wings coming out of her shoulderblades, each one flanked by three floating obsidian triangles. embedded in her chest is a peice of obsidian shaped like a broken heart, and her claws are obsidian as well. she has a couple notches in each ear and a scar over her eye.
story: wildheart is born on a remote planet in a remote universe. save for her and her littermate, their parents and their older sibling squirreltail. soon after the two's birth, their parents die of reasons. unprepared to take care of them, squirreltail opens two portals to random inhabited parts of the multiverse and sends them through, hoping each will be picked up by someone responsible and more able than him.wildheart ends up being adopted by a family of goatlike skeleton monsters, where she stays for the first 13 years of her life (draco-mophiads age like humans up until about their 20th birthday). during this time she becomes incredibly close with her adopted brother, [edit with name later, i forgot it]. shortly after her 13th birthday, wildheart discovered her ability to make portals. with their parents permission, she and her brother went out to explore the multiverse a little.on their little jaunt, the two encountered a creature totally alien to them, and wildheart dared her brother to go poke it with a stick. unfortunately, the creature turned out to be a bear-esque superpreadator and ripped wildheart's brother to shreds while she watched.wildheart opened a portal to nowhere in particular, landing her at a market in the interdimensional void (my imagining of the multiverse is, like space, mostly empty. universes take the shape of enormous white orbs with the texture of frosted lightbulbs. their glow is soft, yet can be seen from light centuries away). scared to go back home, she wandered.and wildheart never stopped wandering. she quickly exanded her scope to universe hopping, trying her best to repress the memories and emotions from her brother's death.during the next eleven years, wildheart developed a routine. explore and universe hop, break gear, plunder something ancient for rare stuff, sell it at the interdimensional market, get new gear, repeat. in ancient tombs and temples, wildheart saw one thing over and over again. carvings of things that looked like her, had the same powers as her. naturally, she assumed she was the last.on the eve of her 24th birthday, wildheart was traveling through the market, looking for something special to get herself. wherever she went, the vendors all talked about one thing. the nearby combat arena had a new champion, a catlike (cats are p much a multiversal constant) calling herself reaper. knowing wildheart, many suggested she challenge her.wildheart was confident in her abilities, both physical and magical, so she decided that a championship would be the perfect gift to herself.
she actually proved a pretty even match for reaper, but in the end the champion won. though wildheart's energy seemed boundless, reapers patience and tactical skill were ultimately able to exhaust her.
after the fight, the two met by chance somewhere in/around the market. they got to talking, reaper asking what wildheart does for a living. finding the prospect of universe-hopping more interesting than beating the shit out of people, reaper asked to join wildheart.
reaper was a tall (for a draco) draco-morphiad with black fur, white patterns outlining the shape of her skeleton (or what it would be if draco-morphiads had those). she wore a grey hoodie. her wings, skeletal things composed entirely of ice, marked her as a water element, though her eyes seemed to contradict that (although wildheart didnt really know that). instead of the slightly desaturated off-teal you would expect from a water element, reapers eyes were pich black with pupils colored a deep, beautiful blue.
anyway, after a few weeks of traveling the multiverse together, the two encountered something strange. a universe with no glow, just a dull grey orb.
portaling inside (and quickly leaving), the two found that the universe was empty. it had experienced a heat death, something totally unnatural in this setting.
wildheart and reaper agreed that they had to find and kill whoever did this.
idk how, exactly, they found him, but that person turned out to be a being calling himself entropy, the incarnation of the void, the nothingness that came before the multiverse. while he was monolouging about a pair of beings called 'chaos' and 'order',  wildheart and reaper tried to jump entropy. entropy did not like this. he used some sort of attack that sent the pair into a strange voidspace.
sat in this voidspace was a pair of beings. a scribbled dragon, with eyes of wildheart's blood red, and a hyperrealistic marble statue of a woman with a buzzcut in a dress, with gemstone eyes of reapers deep, beautiful blue. the two were enormous, the tip of the dragons talon bigger than wildheart's entire body. they were playing chess on a table of equal proportions.
"you're back early." remarked the dragon "did something happen?"
after a bit of confusion, it became understood that wildheart and reaper had no idea who these people were or where they were.
the two giants explained that they were chaos (the scribbled dragon) and order, demiurges of the multiverse.
many googols (a number with a hundred zeroes) of googols of eons ago, there was nothing. out of that nothing arose chaos, pure unbridled creation. but without filter, chaos could not create or take any definite form. and so, it (chaos is they/it) sat as a sort of existance soup for not even they know how long. until, at some point, order arose from the void. order was filter, what chaos needed to truly create. she (order is she/it) could not create by itself either, each dependant on the other to do something they instinctually longed for. order's form was also much different from her current day form, either a ball of quantum strings or a colorless cube of indeterminate material (i havent decided). so, the two came together and created. one of the first things the two created was a pair of souls, one blood red and the other a deep, beautiful blue. each one carved their true name into the corresponding soul in the first language, marking them as the incarnations of chaos and order.t hey were to be sent out into the multiverse together every once in a while, when the multiverse needed saving or just spicing up. of course the current incarnations were wildheart, incarnation of chaos and reaper, incarnation of order. they had been sent out this time for the purpose of killing entropy, whose trail of destruction included countless universes. but for reasons i dont know yet but were probably a mistake on chaos and orders part, they couldnt do it by themselves. they needed two more of their kind (chaos was vague about what 'their kind' was because i want it to be revealed in the narrative later). idk if its the two specific dracos they meet later or just any.
theyre currently in the place behind existance, chaos and order's personal voidspace.
chaos also reveals when talking to order that wildheart and reaper are siblings, before promptly sending them back out into the multiverse. entropy has long moved on, assuming he killed the two siblings.
the story isnt too well planned from here but
after some freaking out/contemplating/whatever over the fact that theyre siblings, wildheart and reaper continue on.
eventually, they encounter Six Of Spades, child of the last draco-morphiad monarch. saen (six of spades uses saen/trah pronouns, the traditional draco neutral/no-element pronouns) is a no-element, a semi-rare mutant with, you guessed it, no element. six of spades percives this as a fault of some sort, and overcompensates for it by playing up the ‘last heir to the draco-morphiad throne’ thing. Technically, saens cousin would have inherited the throne, but saen has no cousins saens aware of. six of spades would actually make a good monarch, if not for saens general neurosis and feeling of being (mostly) superior to those around trah.
six of spades watched saens parent die in front of saen to poachers, who wanted monarch eris (six of spades's parent)'s teeth. the teeth are the only part of a draco-morphiads pure magic core that doesnt simply dissipate after death. theyre an extremely potent source of magic, thus why draco-morphiads were killed for them shortly after the fall of the empire.
apperance wise, six of spades is an average sized (about 4 feet tall) grey draco-morphiad. saen has medium-grey fur down to saens waist, where its abruptly replaced by light grey scales. saen has ear fins like a dragon, and spikes going down saens back that may or may not start with the scales. six of spades has a lizard like tail and long, angular talons. save for color scheme (monarch eris was green), the spitting image of saens parent. six of spades also wears a worn gold crown and carries a worn gold staff with a magic gemstone orb, both posessions of monarch eris
wldheart and reaper convince six of spades to come with them.
eventually, they encounter a young (about 13 year old)
PROMPT: One person can draw anything they can imagine, and it’ll become reality. The other can draw something that already exists and then erase it, and it will no longer exist in real life. One is a villain and the other is a hero.
So, I wrote this a while back. It took a rather dark turn about my struggle with depression, so if that’s not your thing, scroll on! I think it’s important to note that I’m fine now. I have been for a while, lol, so don’t go fretting over my current mental health.
don’t worry. things will get better.
A Picture of Hope
The world is dark— black, white, and a myriad of grays. It is hard to tell when it started, but one day I realized the light was gone and the world was gray. And worse, it had been for years, maybe decades
That was the day I realized Depression had been stealing from me all the things I had loved. It happened so slowly, unseen, that when I finally did realize, it was too late. Depression had already taken too much.
Depression started small. With its deformed, blackened hands, it erased some Confidence, replacing it with a simple picture of doubt and fear. With that picture, a seed was planted and the world lost some of its color, some of its vibrancy, but I didn’t notice.
In the beginning, it was a small defeat or words unspoken. But the seed grew, spreading its roots. Cracks grew, deepened, until it was a vast chasm. From its depths came unending whispers of failure and uncertainty, echoing in my head, refusing to be silenced.
With its foothold, Depression continued to take, using Confidence as its kindling. It stole small and large— my self-worth, self-love. The more it took, the darker it became, the color draining steadily from the world as I watched, confused, unsure how to place what exactly was wrong— until the day I woke, and it was all shades of gray, colorless.
With its presence known, Depression greedily erased my Happiness, leaving me with nothing but sorrow and misery. It was quick, unlike before. One day it was there, the next it was gone, so quickly that the emptiness was agonizing. And Depression cackled all the while, watching me struggle, gasping.
It erased and erased, taking everything until I was left nothing but a husk of who I once was, an empty shell, with only one thing remaining: my Life.  And still, it waited. Waited until I was alone and vulnerable, waited to try and erase Life so it could have that, too.
I tried to draw, all those years. Tried to fix the damage Depression caused. Tried to fill the holes. I tried to recreate the things Depression had taken, but it was useless. The things I drew didn’t fit. They were misshapen and useless. Sometimes they worked for a few days or months, but they always fell, crumbled, leaving the aching hollowness anew.
Depression laughed in my face as it watched me struggle. Struggle to live, to have the strength to wake day after day unfulfilled. Struggle to find happiness in familiar places, only to be left wanting and confused. Struggle to find confidence where there was none. Struggle to find the blooming colors of love and acceptance in a world that had long since been desaturated.
But I tried once more. Tried to fight back— to turn things around.
Like so many times before, I pick up the pen and paper with a trembling hand. Like so many times before, tears wet my cheeks, thinking about all the things Depression had taken away from me, leaving me nothing but empty and hollow. Like so many times before, I try again.
With pen to paper, my hands move. It feels just like every time before and I am ready to give up. I am ready to give myself, wholly, to the dark, winged beast constantly looming over me. Ready to toss myself into the deep, dark abyss Depression made my soul.
I’m ready to let Depression erase the only thing I have left, my Life itself.
But I can’t. For so many reason, I can’t. I’m a coward. I love too much. I’d miss too much. So, I try harder, to draw, to fight it. Tears fall faster, but I push past it, wishing, praying this time things will be different.
When I look down at what I’ve created, I’m ready to see failure. But I don’t. My eye catches something I haven’t seen in many years:
Hope.
Because what is Hope, if not Strength in the face of everything lost? Hope for the darkness to end. Hope for the rising sun to rid the world of shades of gray and cast beautiful hues of pinks and orange, illuminating the world. Hope that one day I will be strong enough to keep drawing, keep creating, keep repairing
So, I keep drawing, creating new pictures where Depression has erased. Filling the holes, the emptiness. Until one day, I wake happy. And some time later, I wake confident. And one day soon, I know I will wake to see the colors have returned.
>Mirrored.
To anyone entering the room, nothing would look out of the ordinary. Books and boxes were resting where they had been for the past few days, assorted humps of clothes were stacked haphazardly but at ease. The only new addition to this room was a Handmirror, placed towards the back, stacked neatly on top of several boxes. Its glass was dark but reflective, hiding its portal expertly.
Raven was inside of it, though one would never know that simply through observation.
The Mindscape was much healthier than it had been the last time Raven visited. The skies were once again dark with no distant, far off red sparks. The trees had black leaves and the various spirit ravens were disinterested, at best, with white eyes. They didn’t even seem to notice the Empath as she scoured her inner selves.
Greetings hadn’t been long. A hug there, a comforting here. The facets of her Emotions were far less mercurial than they had been in her youth, much more manageable now that she’d had a few years of attunement with them. Even their colors, once starkly different than her own, were far more unified and all shared a cool tint.
“...So... you haven’t seen her?” Raven asked, quirking a brow.
“No! If she’s here, she’s doing a good job of hiding!” Pink sat and lounged, running her hands through the length of her hair. She seemed to enjoy the difference, twisting it and braiding it as she swung her legs.
“...That doesn’t mean she isn’t here.” Grey spoke. Her hands found the edges of her cloak and she closed it tightly around herself. It seemed as though speaking at all was taxing to her. Purple was there almost immediately, pulling Grey into a sitting embrace and combing careful fingers through the tangles of Grey’s hair. “Shh, she’s not.”
“No. I... I think she is here. Grey is right.” Raven spoke, knitting her brow beneath the darkness of her hood. “We’re better to be cautious than to be optimistic here.”
“But, you like, totally banished Tri-”
“Don’t. Don’t say his name.” Raven interrupted Orange. Orange scrunched up her face and stuck her tongue out, not caring for Rae’s censorship. She all but blew a raspberry before the Central Empath rose up into the air and flew above the multicolored meeting. If Red wasn’t in attendance, it meant one of two things:
She had been destroyed when Saro blasted Trigon’s influence from Raven’s body. or She was hiding and biding her time, she was a particularly insidious and violent snake in the grass.
“Stay here.” Raven spoke to her Emotions. While Orange immediately began to complain, she was silenced rather quickly by Yellow and Purple. The communal area was the safest at the moment, central to all of the Domains and out of sight. If Red wanted to attack, she would have to expose herself first.
As Raven flew, she mulled things over. If the mirror at her Apartment had been any indication, she should check the Reflection Pools. It seemed as good a place as any for Red to be hiding, to be viewing and growing like a tumor in the walls of the Mindscape. The flight didn’t take long, not that time mattered at all in this place.
As the Empath descended onto the surface of the pools, the toe of her boot touching its placid waters and sending a singular ripple out towards the jagged edges of the body, her eyes scanned and searched for even the barest hint of crimson amongst the stones and foliage. It was a search that wasn’t necessary. A hand broke through the surface of the Reflection Pool and dragged Raven beneath it in a violent undertoe to the darkest depths in a matter of moments. Air billowed uselessly from Raven’s lips in a stifled silence. The murky darkness of the Reflection Pool consumed her and her interloper, and soon she found herself floating directionless in the voided black of Deep Introspection. It was here she saw her, Red; though... she’d never seen Red look quite the way she did now.
Red looked haggard. Her white hair was wild and untamed, still cropped short and burnt a charcoal black at its ends. Her skin was a deep red, burnt and desaturated. The only part that looked at all like her were the glowing red eyes, four of them, that stared into Raven as through they were attempting to bore straight through her. The blue Witch took a breath of the deepwater, and just like that was able to breathe and speak once more.
“...I knew you’d be here.” There was no malice, just a resigned bluntness. Red didn’t react, she just stayed there floating, cloak and hair tousled by the moving streams of Introspection. “Are you too weak to speak? What do you expect to get out of this?” The space between them was unchanging, neither party moving closer or farther away.
“Are you happy?” Red asked, voice twinged with a kind of wrongness that made Raven’s skin crawl.
“...Yes.”
“Do you think you deserve it? How long do you think your happiness will last?” As Red speaks, her mouth doesn’t move. Her voice whispers around them from all angles.
“Yes. Absolutely. I don’t need to be punished for your choices, your actions. I am not you.”
“So it wasn’t you that destroyed those Universes? Wrought that destruction?”
“You ask a lot of questions,” Raven stated plainly. “I think that’s because you don’t have a single answer.”
“...I have many answers. I know what you are doing, Rachel. I know how it will fail. I know what the Fates have in store for you. You are not allowed happiness, it’s not in your Destiny. A thing like you, like us, is only meant to Destroy. Do you want to destroy Saro? She doesn’t deserve that. Every day you spend there, in the Universe that doesn’t belong to you, the higher the risk of hurting those you care about.
It’s shocking how selfish you are, after everything you’ve done. Do you really think that this is your happy ending? Do you think that this is a reward you’re owed?”
“--Raven.” The Empath replied, moving to close the distance between herself and the Red visage.
“Excuse me?”
“My name. It’s Raven.” The space between them was almost completely closed, less than an arm’s length away. Red didn’t move, confusion twisted on her features. A deep frown painted her lips as she stared at Raven, bewilderment clear on her face.
“...I forgive myself for what you made me do. I plan on setting it right as soon as I can. Your words have no power over me, not now, not here. If you rise against me we’ll crush you again, and again, and again. As many times as it takes. I know this is hard to understand...” Raven speaks, lashing out with sluggish hand to grip the arm of Red and pull her closer. She doesn’t resist.
“...but you aren’t in control of me anymore.” Following her words, Raven brought Red into a tight embrace, a crushing one, a powerful lock of her arms around the frail and damaged form of the last shreds of Trigon’s Might that brewed inside her mind.
“If you don’t stay here, right here and only here, I will destroy you. Live in these depths forever. It’s more than what you deserve.”
With that, Raven’s eyes opened. Her body manifested in the room, holding the Mirror, gazing into her own reflection. The mirror was replaced into one of the many boxes in the room, wrapped in a bolt of black velvet and tucked between books and trinkets.
    All things considered, that went well...
Analysis of the Bosses' Eyes
@icykalisartblog wrote these after we discussed how to describe the pokemon villains through a single trait in their design. I thought they were really good and they have given me permission to post it on their behalf!
Giovanni's eyes are similar in shape to a Persian's, but are darker and more sunken due to his age. Persian's Dex entries mention that it is somewhat feminine (it is compared to a "proud queen"), that it is lithe yet powerful, fickle and mean, and attacks anyone who looks it in the eye. All of these details apply to Giovanni as well. Giovanni's hiding his eyes with his hat is a sign of how far he has fallen and of his shame.
Archie's irises are sharp and his eyes are usually not fully open. This makes him resemble a predator. Then he has the slashes on his face that make him similar to his signature pokemon, Sharpedo. Concept art that shows Archie looking up shows that only the whits of his eyes become visible, which looks freaky and even more fishlike.
Maxie's eyes are similar to Archie's because they are different characters who fufill the same role in-game. However, his lids are visible, so he looks more like his signature pokemon, Camerupt. The half-lidded eyes also make him appear to be snooty and stoic. His glasses further increase the distance between him and the people around him, and the things extending from his glasses are like little shields that block out everything. When Maxie loses, his glasses almost fall off because he's just recieved a wake-up call, essentially.
Cyrus's eyes are icy cold and usually give off a thousand-yard stare. They are also very large, indicating Cyrus's penchant for observing and crafting his surroundings carefully. They are also sunken, suggesting he has aged prematurely. Cyrus's eye color is more washed-out then Team Galactic's usual color schemes, highlighting how Cyrus doesn't fit with everyone else and his cold personality. Once again, they look similar to Weavile's eyes. Also, one of Weavile's Dex entries states, "They live in cold regions, forming groups of four or five that hunt prey with impressive coordination." Who else formed a group of four (in DP) or five (in Platinum) and tried to hunt a target by carefully manipulating and coordinating a group?
In a twist on the other bosses' eyes, Ghetsis's eye is never half-lidded. He always wants to observe everyone around him, which makes sense. Plus, his eye is usually open a little bit too wide while his eyebrow is tense at the same time, showing how crazed and stressed he is. In addition, Ghetsis's eyes look like semicircles, but it's because the area under his eye is tense all the time. In BW2, Ghetsis gains an eye bag under it, one sign of his degradation. His eye is bright red, which suggests blood, passion, rage, and Satan, and the color stands out from his desaturated green hair. Ghetsis's single eyebrow is also an odd shape, with a spike on the side opposite his tear duct. This indicates that something is dangerous and off about him. His eyepatches have spikes that counterbalance his eyebrow.
Colress's eyes are pointy and look hexagonal, echoing the other hexagons present in his outfits--the symbolism of this shape and how it relates to Colress, I still don't know. Colress never opens his eyes completely in any of his appearences, which makes him look cold, amused, and unaffected by anything going on around him. Also, because his eyelids are down, his irises look rectangular, making him look robotic. His eye color is a slightly greenish yellow, a color that looks very artificical. Colress's eyebrows never change position, suggesting that he either isn't feeling anything at all or is pleased all the time. Colress has glasses that obscure his eyes (in BW2) or are hexagonal and whose lenses are barely visible (USUM). Colress has a tendency to look down with just his eyes without moving the rest of his body, which shows how he's in control of his subjects.
Lysandre's eyes look well-manicured, with little details that look like "wings" made with eyeliner. From what I understand, this look is called cat eyes, which would make sense because he owns a Pyroar and is interested in fashion. However, his eyes are sky blue, which is a big change from his orange, red, and black color scheme. Blue eyes are often considered attractive and rare, which is how many people in-game view Lysandre. It also highlights his soulful, emotional nature. When he is angry, his irises look like they shrink (!) which might show that his caring side is not his true self. His eyes generally have a lot of shine in them, which makes sense because he is the only boss to cry in-game. Blue eyes are also associated with heaven, which works with Lysandre's goals. Also, I can't help but mention the connection between blue eyes, genocide, and eugenics. Lysandre also wears sunglasses that do match his color scheme. Those sunglasses sport a popular design (with the horizontal bars) and show that Lysandre is too far gone by the time he puts them on.
Guzma's eye color is a pale grey that looks very similar to the whites of his eyes, making him look more like a bug. His eyebrows are thick and dark, which indicates that he is young, dangerous, and full of life. The sunglasses he wears before disbanding his team are literally bent out of shape, which is why replacing them shows a change in his character and a distancing from his thuggish bullying of others. There is a break in his new sunglasses, though, which might suggest that he altered his old ones instead of getting a new pair. He has purple eyeshadow on, which both makes him look like a stereotypical thief and causes him to appear older than he actually is. Because he has lines around his eyes in addition to the eyeshadow, it may also be that he uses the make-up to disguise wrinkles due to stress or some health issue, mental or physical. The purple eyeshadow is also reminiscent of a black eye, which hints to his past experiences.
Lusamine's right eye is always hidden by her hair, meaning she is hiding part of herself. Her eyes are two distinct colors--bright green and gold. The green may indicate jealousy or greed, and might also show the part of her that is attached to her children, or perhaps her desire to protect the habitats of pokemon and preserve life. The yellow could be her connection to Aether. Also, the lines between the two colors show that something about Lusamine isn't integrated properly. The fact that Lusamine's eyelashes are usually hidden helps make her eyes look similar to Lillie's, Gladion's, and Mohn's all at once. Lusamine's eyes are more almond-shaped, both conventionally beautiful and sharp. Her eyes are often hidden by shadows that are cast by her hair, showing that she is dark and menacing.
Flame Headcanons
@i-w-p-chan asked me to explain some xover thoughts between Katekyo Hitman Reborn flames & Boku no Hero Academia characters, so buckle up ‘cuz it’s a long post under the read more! Headcanon, ho!
To explain my numbers, I gotta explain a buncha other shit too, lmao.
So basically I got some inspo from micronecro way back when (the post here on my tumblr if you're curious) that Earth Flames & whatnot were all combination Flames. Swamp is Storm+Sun, Forest Sun+Lightning, Mountain Lightning+Rain, Desert Rain+Mist, Glacier Mist+Cloud, & that last mysterious flame being named Geyser for Cloud+Storm.
I also wanted a third part of Flames for the water aspect (Earth is obvs earth, Sky is a combo of fire & air for skies themselves), so I also came up with Ocean Flames & that entire set. The feeling was only reinforced by an offhand comment by nordiamus over on FFN in their Game On xover, really.
So if Sky is the most purely Flame set & Earth is combo, shouldn't Ocean also be some sort of combo? But if the Sky is so common & Earth heard of but not really heard of, then wouldn't Ocean be even more rare?
I eventually settled on a natural 3:4:5 ratio, but to have a ratio I needed to have numbers, so I had to math shit out & also needed to have shorthand symbols so I didn't inevitably confuse myself while making sure they actually showed up in both Notepad & Excel, colors for much the same, & characteristics for the Flames themselves too. Took a long while, but I got everything settled out.
I chose 108 for the point system because it's already a trope, lol. I also made use of Umei-no Mai's Black Sky's headcanon that you actually needed around 5% of each Flame to develop properly, though I had to use it as 6% b/c the math would've become bad math otherwise. This means any singular Flame can only be a value between 6 to 76 out of 108 (6-70%), b/c there’s gotta be at least 6 points (6%) on everything. Here’s a handy chart:
Tumblr media
Yellow is where I folded percentages together, red is the tens on the point side, with green the tens on the percent side. A general guideline I use is that you need at least 18% to produce a visible Flame. You can do it with smaller percentages down to 10%, but it requires exceptional control & possibly small reserves (which can also be called depth). (this scenario would also produce a functional sky but it’d be a fairly weak one since it was both not activated as such and not a full state of being for them).
Dying Will Flames of the Sky: NAME: hex code, attribute, symbol (reason if needed) (the link has interesting info), type of resolve (HC from Gokurdera being able to light 5 Flames but not all at once); appearance
Tumblr media
STORM: #EB1C23 brilliant red, disintegration, ♋ (looks like hurricane cell; I'm aware it's actually the symbol for Cancer), to take down; low-heat smoldering, smokey upcurls & tongues
SKY: #FFA719 vivid gamboge, harmony, at least 10% (11/108) on all, ☰ (this the trigram symbol for heaven you see), to keep/stay; most like fire w/ flares, wisps, & overall more ethereal movement
SUN: #FFC70F amber, activation, ☀, to improve; like starlight in that it’s constant jetting outwards, more a shining than a straight-up fire
LIGHTNING/THUNDER: #23B04B malachite, hardening, ϟ (this is the only lightning-shaped symbol to show up tbh, it's technically the lowercase Greek letter for Q), to defend; electricity w/ small arcs between branches
RAIN: #99D8E8 cerulean, tranquility, ☂, to slow down; pool water with refraction in slow-motion, more round & globular than a fire except it gives off (what it’s user thinks of as ‘relaxing’) heat
MIST: #3F49CC phthalo blue, construction, ♒ (I couldn't find anything that was explicitly 'fog' or whatever, so I had to make do with whatever worked; it's the symbol for Aquarius, though it also symbolizes wind which is the next best, since mist is a groundbound cloud anyways), to confuse; wispy, almost entirely see through, with off center diffusion of color, the palest of the Flames
CLOUD: #A249A3 moderate magenta, propagation, ☁, to overtake; like puffs of smoke with a natural reach of twice the length of everything else in the Sky set (whole hand length minimum)
Dying Will Flames of the Ocean/Sea: NAME: hex code, attribute, symbol (reason if needed); appearance. Funfact: this set has the most desaturated colors as though it’s deeper in the sea, though if you go for max 240-value saturation they’re still discernible from the other sets.
Tumblr media
WHIRLPOOL: #DE7C66 light scarlet, combustion (rapid burning), ☁/♋/☀, ♓ (Pisces symbol, yes, but fish live in pools; also what the fuck, I see literal fish as the symbol everywhere else but this fucking site); elongated fingers of flame that seem to spin or spiral their entire length rather than just the tips like Storm does, like screws or a helix
OCEAN: #FF7700 vivid orange, encompass, 12% (13/108) on all with remainder divided, ☵ (the trigram for water yo; easily distinguishable from both Sky & Earth, even has a mini horizon on there to make a "between the Earth & the Heavens" metaphor); heavy fire, somewhat similar to a tri-pronged crown or W that flutters like it's in the wind
VOLCANO: #C2AC1D moderate gold, acidification (pH cycling), ♋/☀/ϟ, ☈ (the symbol for thunderstorms which I find appropriate, b/c volcanoes can actually spawn these); smokey & partially see thru w/ green halo edging, fuzzy-looking around the edges, tho for a better visual of what I mean, look up fire opals
CURRENT: #85B357 moderate chartreuse, magnetism, ☀/ϟ/☂, ☄ (actually symbolizes comets, but it's theorized comets brought water to Earth anyway); clumps together, lengths loop each other to form a field, look at your hand in the process of turning into a fist, it’s like that
WATERFALL: #306D78 arctic blue, binding, ϟ/☂/♒, ♆ (fuck yeah, the symbol for Neptune sure, but rivers were his children &/or domain as all rivers lead to the ocean); elastic & flexible with no purely set expression beyond naturally long reach (the longest Flame overall)
MOON: #9999CC deep periwinkle, reflection, ☂/♒/☁, ☾ (obvious); moves like a shadow where there’s three or more overlapping areas w/ a natural wave pattern, if you’ve ever seen the sun during a heatwave it’s like where it wobbles due to the thermal air currents so the sun itself doesn’t look like a full disc
TIDE: #CFA7C3 light fuchsia, expansion, ♒/☁/♋, ♎ (the symbol for Libra & the alchemical symbol for the subliminal; also looks like the moon rising from the sea); light, aggressively more magenta when hyper-layered, leaves afterimages like when staring into a bright light, strangely behaves like a less intense Sun Flame where it’s an overall but softer & rounder glow rather than jetting out
Dying Will Flames of the Earth/Soil: NAME: hex code, attribute, symbol (reason if needed); appearance
Tumblr media
SWAMP: #FFB482 tangelo, fermentation (living things), 28% (30) ♋/☀ each, ☣ (biohazard was a perfect fit); almost flat but highly agitated w/ irregular flares & flickers, highest temp behind Earth in this set, technically shortest Flame at half a finger height (knuckle to first joint)
EARTH: #BD3900 vermillion, gravity, 14% (15) all, ☷ (trigram for earth); dense & exceptionally rounded fire, appearing like a split V flame that doesn’t move about as much as an actual fire, more pulled together
FOREST: #A6DE5D electric lime, growth, 23% (25) ☀/ϟ each, ♣ (club suit b/c it looks like a little tree); thin, finely branched & erratic fire, with unpredictable sparks
MOUNTAIN: #62BD8E spring green, compression, 28% (30) ϟ/☂ each, ▲ (it's a triangle, but it doubles as a mountain symbol on maps); almost opaque, w/ a fat bottom and narrow top (shaped like a deflated balloon if such a thing floated in your palm) & slow sinuous motion (the widest Flame at the base at around twice the width of the palm holding it, picture lava lamp wax)
DESERT: #1C6BFF cobalt, emergence (big patterns that appear b/c of small things, ex. ripples in sand from wind movement pushing grains around, or the uniqueness of snowflakes) (also influenced by InsaneScriptist's One Piece/KHR xover fic Xanxus' Adventures in Parenthood Piracy where Desert flames are many illusions stacked onto each other), 32% (35) ☂/♒ each, ✿ (black florette b/c I can't really see the white one, & desert flowers are very pretty); perfectly transparent but for a tint, warps the coloring immediately around it into the blue spectrum, a place where it’s just inexplicably blue above where it’s being held, like staring into a mirror reflecting itself greener and greener, but if made visible to others it might give an appearance of sand because it’s also not a very “even” or “smooth” Flame
GLACIER: #C68CFF light violet, fortification taking the form of crystals as it’s just that intense, 37% (40) ♒/☁ each, ♦ (diamond suit b/c that's a basic crystal shape, also to not leave Forest as a card by itself); upside down kite shape w/ barbed &  jagged edges like frost, not see through like you almost expect tho it’s the whitest one in general w/ bright vivid color at the edge
GEYSER: #99007D red plum, extension, 32% (35) ☁/♋ each, ♨ (hot springs are close enough to geysers for me to the connection); like heated water complete w/ dense steaming, and the leading edge even redder
Tumblr media
Have a handy little mnemonic pic to remember how to get what.
And just who can forget Night Flames either? I headcanon that Night was one of the 3 human Flames before the Earthlings like Kawahira were forced to pass the other 3 sets onto humans to sustain life; Snow, Void, & Night were all buried under and/or split between the newer sets, which is why no one ever pulls them forth until Bermuda has his Flames torn out by his Pacifier being taken by Checkerface.
SNOW: silvery-white, absorption (base reason for why humans can become all sorts of creatures, but never back), prevalent ☀ &/or ☂ &/or ☁, ☊ (ascending node, alchemical symbol for sublimation). Appearance: aerogel if it was fire shaped, glowing around the edges like a halo, pale silver-ish, a defined or captured mist spray.
VOID: (perfect) gray, preservation, ☰ &/or ☵ &/or ☷, ⊕ (alchemical symbol for verdigris, symbol for Earth the planet). This was basically the first version of Skies, Oceans, & Earths for humans. Appearance: a blooming iridescence, like summoning a faint rainbow upon a slick surface but in petaled flower silhouette (inherent control of it’s user imparts the number of petals).
NIGHT: black*, perpetuity (grim determination to do this ONE thing & damn the consequences, to carry on), prevalent ♋ &/or ϟ &/or ♒, ☋ (descending node, alchemical symbol for purification). Appearance: invisible unless moving, black & heavy looking when it does almost like a smear or smudge, with a type of simmering heat to it, an absence of light (resulting in a clear pacifier). *You know the video game thing/unresolvable YouTube video error where it’s supposed to be dark but it’s actually just a dark grey that feels creepy to look at too long? That color.
(I got a lot, seriously a bunch of other shit attributed to each Flame too, but this thing is already long enough. If I get interest, I’ll just make another post).
This has Earth-set Flames absurdly specialist but still very possible by accident, while leaving the Ocean-set harder to achieve any other way but naturally feeling the resolve for each separate component Flame. It also makes Oceans & Earths fundamentally Skies, just denser or even-keeled if you can get that. (compare phases of matter as gas [always chaotic], liquid [clumping together but still fairly energetic], and solid [at least mostly rigid in state]).
You also don’t need to be part of the same set to be considered an element, either... folding down anyway. A fully realized Earth could only truly bond w/ only Earth-set Flames, an Ocean could bond w/ Ocean-set Flames, but a Sky could bond w/ anyone by latching onto just one Flame, disregarding if it’s part of a composite Flame. Earth and/or Ocean Flames might identify more as a Sky than their ‘proper’ label as a matter of self-preservation as their elements are so rare, so would feel more at home pulling in Sky elements rather than Ocean or Earth elements. (not that it’d stop them if given the choice).
This all neatly dovetails into headcanon Flames for Class 1A for BNHA, arranged by set then seat.
From the Sky-set, you got:
Asui Tsuyu: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 37=34%; ϟ: 11=10%; ☂: 37=34%; ♒: 6=6%; ☁: 11=10%; (☀, ☂). You can’t tell me she talks with that huge tongue without having to Actively shoot it, right? Rain because she’s just so naturally calm.
Mashirao Ojiro (6): ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 9=8%; ϟ: 9=8%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 6=6%; ☁: 72=66%; (☁). Because he seems kinda distant to me like most of KHR Clouds seem to be in theory, idk why. I do think he’s cool tho.
Kaminari Denki: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 36=33%; ϟ: 24=22%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 6=6%; ☁: 30=28%; (☀, ϟ, ☁). Sun b/c his lightning is actually yellow so I theorize he’s actually Propagating his natural Activated bioelectricity via Cloud, but there’s enough Lightning to leave him intact doing so and lend his bioelectricity it’s more elongated shape. A further headcanon is that his family’s lightning quirks all effectively have different colors.
Kirishima Eijirou: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 13=12%; ϟ: 48=44%; ☂: 17=16%; ♒: 8=7%; ☁: 16=15%; (ϟ). That’s some classic Lightning right there.
Jiro Kyouka: ♋: 9=8%; ☀: 18=17%; ϟ: 18=17%; ☂: 14=13%; ♒: 9=8%; ☁: 40=37%; (☁). To make the sound of her heartbeat exponentially louder like a boss. Also introduces sensitivity problems.
Tokoyami Fumikage: ♋: 22=20%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 26=24%; ♒: 40=37%; ☁: 8=7%; (♋, ☂, ♒). Mist to materialize Dark Shadow, Rain to be dense enough to interact w/ which when paired w/ Storm fucks w/ him when Dark Shadow gets too powerful (ie overwhelming him & largely destructive).
fuck Mineta, let’s replace him
I can’t believe I have shamed myself into including him
Mineta Minoru: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 30=28%; ϟ: 7=6%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 26=24%; ☁: 33=30%; (☀, ♒, ☁). While he can inherently multiply what’s essentially wads of his hair, Mist is what imparts it’s special properties (otherwise he’d stick to his pillows & his clothes would catch on when he gets dressed), & Sun lets him naturally produce more. This is where overuse comes into play; too much Sun Flame in too short a time frame splits the skin, though thankfully the bloodflow washes out anything that might’ve evolved into cancer cells before it begins healing. I figure if he trains more & CAREFULLY, he might start using Sun to more enhance Cloud allowing him more stamina w/ his quirk.
From the Ocean-set, you get:
Ashido Mina: ♋: 30=28%; ☀: 20=19%; ϟ: 25=23%; ☂: 10=9%; ♒: 15=14%; ☁: 8=7%; (♋, ☀, ϟ) / (☈): she adjusts pH to get what she wants. It’s fair chance she was born with near-Sky values.
Iida Tenya: ♋: 19=18%; ☀: 21=19%; ϟ: 19=18%; ☂: 7=6%; ♒: 22=20%; ☁: 20=19%; (♋, ☀, ϟ, ♒, ☁) / (♓, ♎w). Combustion engine, baby! He’s exploding things to go faster. His family’s been cultivating this particular quirk so long his line is close to producing Skies!
Uraraka Ochako: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 22=20%; ϟ: 23=21%; ☂: 24=22%; ♒: 19=18%; ☁: 14=13%; (☀, ϟ, ☂, ♒) / (☄, ♆w, ☾). Manipulating magnetism to cancel out a lot of the gravity by making it attracted to itself & only itself so repelling everything not itself, & reflection to drop them back into gravity by touching her own fingertips. Her Cloud attribute isn’t actually able to manifest outside of her body b/c it lacks outward-manifesting strength; it makes up for this in being able to apply Moon w/ extra depth & precision. The depth part is what makes her nauseous. She’s actually got a hidden attribute in Waterfall/binding! She might be able to functionally (seek a) target where she drops stuff later on if she discovers it.
Mezou Shouji: ♋: 22=20%; ☀: 12=11%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 28=26%; ☁: 34=31%; (♋, ♒, ☁) / (♎). Expansion materializes new body parts with the help of Mist, Cloud to shorthand remember bodyparts he’s already got, & Storm to reabsorb them when they’re no longer needed.
Hagakure Tooru: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 36=33%; ♒: 30=28%; ☁: 24=22%; (☂, ♒, ☁) / (☾). She’s just straight up reflecting most if not all light that hits her body, which is why you can see her clothing but not her. HC she’s got excellent night vision; you might see a bit of eyeshine even!
Hmmm... for funsies, how about:
Shinsou Hitoshi: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 36=33%; ☂: 30=28%; ♒: 24=22%; ☁: 6=6%; (ϟ, ☂, ♒) / (♆). He takes control by binding his will on top of yours, like puppet strings. He reroutes your actions to his command w/ a combination of redirecting your natural electrical signals in your brain (which is why getting jarred will return your action to you) & Mist enabling him to do it in ways that won’t get detected until he does it. He’d be unstoppable if he ever worked out how to do it without the invitation; though as it’s partly psychological he might stop himself from ever overcoming that limitation.
And lastly from the Earth-set, you have:
Aoyama Yuuga: ♋: 30=28%; ☀: 29=27%; ϟ: 28=26%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 8=7%; ☁: 7=6%; (♋, ☀, ϟ) / (☈) / (☣). He’s fermenting the bacteria in his stomach by changing the acidity of his stomach acids whenever he shoots his laser. Boy’s gotta eat if he wants it to recharge.
Kouda Kouji: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 37=34%; ϟ: 37=34%; ☂: 11=10%; ♒: 11=10%; ☁: 6=6%; (☀, ϟ) / x / (♣). He can communicate w/ living things b/c he’s basically making them recognize him as a friend (not that he doesn’t make friends with them anyway, tho).
Satou Rikidou: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 22=20%; ϟ: 32=30%; ☂: 30=28%; ♒: 11=10%; ☁: 7=6%; (☀, ϟ, ☂) / ☄w / (▲). He compresses sugar to allow his body to process it quicker without it having to be digested first.
Sero Hanta: ♋: 35=32%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 7=6%; ♒: 6=6%; ☁: 48=44%; (♋, ☁) / x / (♨). He produces something sticky then extends it very far.
Yaoyorozu Momo: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 7=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 35=32%; ♒: 35=32%; ☁: 19=18%; (☂, ♒, ☁) / ☾w / (✿). This is obvious, but I will say she gives whatever she makes true form because she’s using both knowledge to give it form & real energy derived from her body to give it material, which is why nothing dissolves away once she turns away from it.
You might have noticed a few missing. Here’s Todoroki w/ some calculations for his family members! Yeah!
Enji Todoroki/Endeavor: ♋: 49=45%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 25=23%; ♒: 9=8%; ☁: 13=12%; (♋, ☂). Storm because fire (named Hellfire because it curls strangely & the fact it could burn everything), Rain for upping temperature by effecting density (meaning a thinner stream of fire).
Touya/Dabi: ♋: 37=34%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 17=16%; ♒: 9=8%; ☁: 33=30%; (♋, ☁), Storm has the lowest energy & temperature imo, and Cloud’s b/c he can make a LOT of fire; I HC it’s more than Dumpster Fire could manage (that guy’s more of a precision over power kinda guy Flame wise, even if still pretty powerful). This Todoroki bro is just that good with his quirk, to produce blue fire by pure willpower.
Fuyumi: ♋: 13=12%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 7=6%; ☂: 34=31%; ♒: 29=27%; ☁: 19=18%; (☂, ♒, ☁) / ♎w, ☾w. She’s totally a Rain, you can fight me on this. Her quirk’s gotta be something Asshole would consider useless for Hero work, so I’ll venture it might be Chill: temperature manipulation with a leaning towards cooler temps. If she ever became truly aware of the possibilities she could conjure, she’d obliterate him. Have fun sparking fire when everything refuses to heat up, bitch, lmao.
Natsuo: ♋: 8=7%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 13=12%; ☂: 16=15%; ♒: 49=45%; ☁: 16=15%; (♒). Mostly so every single Todoroki has their own major element, though it’s still an entirely possible outcome from his parents. I don’t think he’s publicly quirkless because if that was a possibility his father would’ve gotten a new wife/brood mare b/c he’s THAT asshole. However, his Mist is strong enough that even if he was, he could’ve become an Active Flame user at a young age, and Mist’s pale blue color and gaseous form (if seen) might’ve made him seem like another temperature manipulator, thus also useless for his father’s ambitions. If he’s the type, he might be using it as a more physical support for himself, such as running longer or lifting more without injury than should be possible for someone who doesn’t exercise, that kind of thing.
Shouto: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 42=38%; ☁: 42=38%; (♒, ☁) / x / (♦). He’s the ultimate ice maker, & the fire side is just genetics making a general fire. If he ever became able to use Flames instead of fire, the fire would instead be a violet color rather than the yellowish one that it is now. Mist & Cloud are higher than his mother’s due to some very mild combination with his father’s values. It also makes his ice & consequently his fire VERY strong, considering every scrap not needed by the others is fed into his ice.
Rei: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 7=6%; ☂: 9=8%; ♒: 40=37%; ☁: 40=37%; (♒, ☁) / x / (♦). Ice, but a bit more spread out for variety. I’ve given her a common surname Yukimura, 雪村 "snow village" that alludes to her ice quirk, Flame, & the fact she seems to have had little support over the years.
Here’s Bakugou & Izuku!
Bakugou Katsuki: ♋: 30=28%; ☀: 30=28%; ϟ: 13=12%; ☂: 13=12%; ♒: 11=10%; ☁: 11=10%; ☰, (♋, ☀) / x / (☣). A first generation Sky. Fermentation applies to various bacteria that’s present in his sweat b/c they live on his skin, with Storm killing them & Sun activating whatever is left behind. He doesn’t always use Storm, which just leaves Sun sparking his palms, a holdover from his father also being a Swamp user.
Midoriya Izuku: ♋: 18=17%; ☀: 14=13%; ϟ: 26=24%; ☂: 14=13%; ♒: 14=13%; ☁: 22=20%; ☰, (ϟ, ☁) / ☵, (♓, ♎). A legacy Sky from his mother’s side (she’s an Earth as is most of the family on that half of his tree), though it’s completely chance he managed to be an Ocean b/c the values his father had lowered just the right higher Earth stats his mother had. Lightning & Cloud have high values enough to be secondaries, which actually shows up whenever he uses One for All which is naturally propagating to begin with. He’s got the proper Lightning appearing & everything. Whirlpool & Tide are an accident of numbers but also greatly appreciated by enabling better control? allocation? of One for All’s power.
Here’s everyone else who didn’t fit anything else above, like teachers & secondary characters!
Midoriya Inko: ♋: 18=17%; ☀: 15=14%; ϟ: 15=14%; ☂: 18=17%; ♒: 21=19%; ☁: 21=19%; ☰, (♒, ☁) / ☵, (♓, ♆) / ☷. She pulls things like gravity, ‘nuff said.
Hisashi Midoriya: ♋: 19=18%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 31=29%; ☂: 7=6%; ♒: 22=20%; ☁: 23=21%; (♋, ϟ, ♒, ☁) / ♎w. Aways from being a Sky, but any potential offspring have a fairly good chance of being one with the right spouse/Inko. His ϟ deals with plasma, ☁ gives some projection so he doesn’t light himself on fire, ♒ a bit of fireproofing to the body parts & organs involved in fire-beathing, & ♋ some true (excuse the pun) fire power to what he can disintergrate w/ the fire produced. End result is a whitish-yellow flame between 2,200 °F (1,200 °C) & 2,400 °F (1,300 °C). I HC that he doesn’t have a very far reach with his fire-breath, about an arm length maybe unless he’s so emotional he lights some Cloud so it’s a full body length or longer. I also HC he took his wife’s name when they married, so I use Teiko (醍醐 "Good liquor, fine wine; clarified butter, ghee," w/ a pun of 大悟 "enlightenment") as his previous surname.
Aizawa Shouta: ♋: 20=19%; ☀: 7=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 29=27%; ♒: 25=23%; ☁: 21=19%; (♋, ☂, ♒, ☁) / (☾). He’s sending a cancellation wave (the reverse reflection, no?) but the pale color of Moon is overpowered by his visible Storm which gives his eyes a visage of red & makes them dry af. He releases it in waves w/ Rain being the largest component meaning it floats his hair & gives the appearance of being underwater. Doubly powerful in that Rain, Mist, & Cloud are divisible by both points and percentage.
Camie: ♋: 7=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 21=19%; ☂: 30=28%; ♒: 38=35%; ☁: 6=6%; (ϟ, ☂, ♒) / ♆w / (✿). I made her a Desert rather than just a regular Mist because I had another calculation, tbh. I also figure Desert would be more fitting since while dramatic she’s also fairly chill and likes a good laugh, & Mist always seemed like a “effect self” more than “effect others” kind of utilization (not that it’s not possible or anything, obvs). Waterfall is for when she finally gets that little niggle in her technique that will allow her to greatly expand the range she currently has, as in “will hold until she lets it drop” kinda range.
Hawks: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 49=45%; ☂: 14=13%; ♒: 26=24%; ☁: 7=6%; (ϟ, ♒). His wings can do and handle some crazy shit because they are made of reinforced (ϟ) crazy shit (♒), and that’s just how he is.
Villains!
All For One: ♋: 11=10%; ☀: 19=18%; ϟ: 20=19%; ☂: 12=11%; ♒: 35=32%; ☁: 11=10%; ☰, (☀, ϟ, ♒). Mist for it being a mostly mental power for all that it effects his body, Sun to pull up the right genetics configuration FOR the quirks he’s taken, Lightning so his actual DNA is protected or lets him revert back to his own.
Shigaraki Tomura/Shimura Tenko: ♋: 71=65%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 8=7%; ☁: 11=10%; (♋). Simple. Got deep reserves & relatively high quirk stamina from Nana's side thru his father.
Since it’s a common headcanon that Skies will vie for elements until they got a full arc & put themselves against other Skies in order to get the ones they want, Bakugou & Izuku were put into an instinctive conflict when Bakugou got access to his quirk. Oceans Encompass so Izuku seriously just did want to be friends for a good while for all he wasn’t Active, but Bakugou doesn’t or didn’t get that because he saw Izuku as a potential or possibly actual disruption to his own Harmony.
And since to have Flames the Earthlings need to have existed, I’m proposing that the Trinisette was disrupted by whatever, such as a mission for potential Arcobaleno resulting in all of them dying with/without ever bonding to the Pacifiers or Kawahira dying either before Bermuda could come into being/Bermuda got a lucky shot in before abruptly staying dead from backlash, & quirks are what appeared from Flames spiraling out of control. Flame distribution is fairly unique even among close family members, resulting in equally unique is similar quirks.
BNHA-verse has gotta prepare for a big storm, is what I’m saying.
+edit: Maybe All for One was one of the first Quirked people to be born to that first disruption wave & discovered he could take Quirks, went out of his way to get powerful ‘Quirks’ first (or what he thought of as Quirks/super powers, but might have been Flame abilities specialized or not), resulting in a shortage of any potential emergency Arcobaleno if Kawahira didn’t die off suddenly.
The Door to Apartment 303
The deep crimson door loomed in the middle of the hallway. The door had a small peephole at eye level. Right above the peephole hung the number 303, fixed there in form of numerals embossed into a small polished brass plate. The doorknob also had the same color and luster, reflecting the soft illumination from the overhead lights in the hallway just outside this door.
Two figures emerged from an elevator, and the sounds of their steps were softened by the old carpet underfoot. The wall-to-wall carpeting’s colors and patterns consisted of dark brown diamond shapes and a desaturated orange mesh that made it look like it had been manufactured in the early 1980s.
They approached door number 303, and the man in the black suit and blue tie pointed at it. Probably in his late forties or early fifties, he looked like he had been going bald early on in his life, with only half a ring of graying hair left around the crown of his head. This fellow looked like a used car salesman, and he smelled of cheap aftershave. His name was Jim Whitehurst. Jim was the landlord of Summerville Heights.
“This is the one,” he said after clearing his throat.
The other figure was Eva Wolczek. A woman in her early twenties with an air of confidence, sporting short, pixie-cut black hair, wearing sturdy boots, a dark blue overall, and a white jacket with the simplistic logo ‘Goldie-Locks’ decorating its back. She had a flat nose and her fingernails were cut very short. She smelled of metal shavings.
“Okay, then,” she responded with an optimistic undertone and nodded. With that announcement, she stood in front of the apartment door and pulled a small black pouch from a pocket inside her jacket.
Jim crossed his arms and looked around in the hallway. His every movement radiated an air of impatience. Eva calmly opened up the Velcro latch of her pouch and knelt down. She placed the pouch on the floor while taking out two fine tools: assorted lockpicks.
“Old tumbler pin lock. Shouldn’t take long,” she muttered. “So, everything alright with the tenant, sir?”
Jim turned to her and sighed. He hooked his thumbs into his pockets before he spoke. Eva paid him no direct attention. She was focused on testing the lock with her instruments.
“That’s what we’re here to find out. Frankly, worst case scenario? The tenant might be deceased. Been over a week since any of the neighbours seen or heard anything from ‘im, and the rent’s overdue.”
“Woof. Sorry to hear that. Not gonna lie, I was always wondering if this line o’ work would get me to see, y'know. A dead body, sooner or later,” she chatted idly while twisting one of the two picks and then switching them for another one that she used like a tiny saw, going in and out of the keyhole.
Using a brown handkerchief from his pant pocket, Jim wiped his brow where sweat was forming tiny little beads, and he smiled nervously.
“Let’s hope it ain’t that bad,” he said.
Only seconds later, Eva reached for the knob and something clicked. The door opened an inch.
“Hah! Lucky.”
She grabbed the tools and her lockpick pouch and stood up, stepping back to make way for her client. He swallowed thin air and looked at the ajar door, observing the pale blue daylight pouring out from the crack. A breeze of cool but stale air poured out, paired with a distinct smell of burnt toast and coffee. Eva put her tools back into the pouch and pocketed that in her jacket again. As the moment dragged on, she looked from the door to Jim and back and forth.
“Do you want me to wait here, or, sh—”
“If you don’t mind, could you stick around? Or better yet, come inside with me. Who knows, maybe one of the doors inside also needs your, uh, expertise,” Jim said, snapping out of his state of inaction and interrupting her. He looked tense, and Eva tried not to stare at his shiny forehead. She failed.
“Yeah, sure. Uh, after you,” she said, using a sweeping gesture to invite him to enter first.
Jim chuckled nervously and mumbled, “Oh, yes.” He pushed the door with his fingertips, and it creaked as it slowly glided open, revealing the inside of apartment 303 to the two people.
Jim entered. He looked like he was feeling light-headed, almost floating in as he walked, as if in a haze. Eva hesitated a few heartbeats long and then followed him, curiously looking around. There were no pictures, no posters, no portraits. Just a dark beige wallpaper everywhere. There was a thin layer of dust on the furniture inside. Everything looked spartan. A small walk-in closet for coats and shoes was built into the wall right next to the front door. A short hallway a few steps long led into a small living room. A second hallway connected the living room to the other rooms of the apartment.
“Mr. Merritts,” Jim suddenly called out loud, startling Eva. He had been peering into another room as he did so, and disappeared in there. Eva stood in the living room, now fully curious. An empty plate with crumbs on it sat on a small wooden coffee table, a butter knife soiled with greasy stains on the blade leaned against the used dish, and next to them stood an old-looking empty mug that said 'BEST DAD’ in bright alternating colors. Rings of coffee stains suggested that this Merritts guy was not a fan of using coasters, she thought.
That door—that bright crimson door to apartment 303—slammed shut. Eva swiveled the moment she heard the loud bang. It was followed by the clicking sound of a lock engaging. Jim showed back up in the second hallway and looked at her with his brows furrowed.
“That the wind,” he said—his words ended up ringing somewhere in between a question and a statement, followed by a nervous laugh. The sound of it was too short and high-pitched to sound genuine. He even looked scared. Eva looked around and did not see any open windows, then just shrugged at him. They both returned to the entry hall leading up to the apartment’s front door.
Jim grabbed the doorknob and twisted. The door would not open.
“The hell?”
He twisted the doorknob again and now even shook it. He was clearly getting frantic.
“May I?” Eva asked. Without waiting for an answer, she pushed past him, and Jim stepped out of the way, looking back to the living room. Eva tried to open the door as well. The doorknob would not even really turn when she tried. Jammed, or something.
She bit her lip and looked at Jim.
“I can open this again, no sweat,” she said, though she was saying it to herself, first and foremost.
“Mr. Merritts was a locksmith, believe it or not. Maybe he made some sorta mechanism for his door to automatically shut and lock,” Jim rambled.
Eva looked the door up and down. The sound of Velcro being ripped open was what broke the awkward silence. Eva shook her head and made herself busy getting out the saw-like lockpick she had used before.
“Huh, never heard of him,” she said, beginning to try her luck with the lock again. “I don’t see no special mechanisms on this door here, either.”
Jingling.
It sounded like someone holding out a key ring with tons of keys on it, shaking it. The jingling resounded one more time. The first time they had heard it, it was already enough to freeze both Eva and Jim solid. Both slowly craned their necks. Looking over their shoulders, they only saw the empty living room: two cheap-looking couches, a coffee table, a small chromed metal stand with a flat-screen television on it, a brown set of shelves with very few books on them, and plenty of negative space only broken up by a signed baseball. Nobody there.
Jim walked deeper into the apartment, peering around the corner into the hallway that led to the kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms. Eva opened her mouth to say something, but then furrowed her brows and focused her attention on picking the lock once more.
Without seeing him, she heard Jim round the corner and vanish into one of the rooms. The blasted lock would not yield, and she tried twisting the doorknob once more. It refused to budge. She dropped the rake pick when she heard the jingling again. It was louder this time, more intense.
“Mr. Whitehurst?”
Blindly pawing to grab her pick off the carpeted floor while she looked behind her at the living room, she heard nothing else but her own breathing. She finally grabbed the pick and stood up with her lockpick in one hand, the black pouch for her tools in the other.
Eva slowly walked from the entrance into the living room and looked down the hall. The doors to the other rooms were all open. She approached them, one by one, looking inside each of them.
Kitchen. Small green table with a smartphone lying on its surface. Stack of dishes in the sink. So many bills and letters stuck to the fridge with magnets that it looked awfully cluttered. Nobody.
Bathroom. The toilet seat was covered in baby-blue plush, uniform with a bath mat and matching towels hanging next to a claustrophobia-inducing shower booth. Not a soul.
Bedroom. Well, rather, office of some sorts. Desk, laptop, some cabinets. Old leather couch with sweat-stains on it jammed into the corner. Nobody here, either. Eva spotted a brown handkerchief crumpled up on the floor here and would have bet that she had seen Jim holding it earlier.
She asked into the room devoid of people before turning around, “Mr. Whitehurst?”
Other bedroom. The door was ajar. Eva pushed it open and went inside. The bed hadn’t been made, the sheets were a mess. Something very strange here: an unplugged digital alarm clock was hanging by its power cord from the ceiling fan, someone had knotted the electric cable of it around one of the fan’s blades. There was no sign of Jim anywhere. Metal frame of a fire escape just outside, but the windows leading to it were firmly shut. Then the jingling, again.
Eva poked her head back outside the room, looking down the hallway again—scared now. She returned to the living room with fast paces, too afraid to run or even to look back. She wondered if she was hearing more than her own footsteps, but it had to have been her imagination. This apartment was too damn small to hide two other people like this.
“Uh, Mr. Whitehurst, I’m leaving now,” she said with a shaky voice.
She got back to trying to pick the lock again but no such luck. Her hand motions were clearly hastier, and she swore out loud a few times. Then she heard the jingling of metal again, but it was much closer. Right next to her, in fact. The sound had come from the small closet next to the entrance, where she was standing. Eva flinched when the jingling resounded yet again. As if struck by lightning, she dropped the objects in her hand and bolted off.
Running down the hallway past the other rooms, she fled back into the bedroom. She rushed towards the window, trying to get it open to get out to the fire escape, but the window was stuck. Eva looked behind her while she struggled to pull the window open, and the jingling erupted behind her, just outside the room’s door.
She shrieked.
Then things went silent in apartment 303. The place was empty. There was nobody in any of the rooms. Eva’s lockpicks were lying around, abandoned on the carpeted floor by the front door. Eerie silence blanketed the empty home.
There were muffled voices just outside the door. Then someone knocked with significant vigor; the door shook from the sheer force of it. Visible through the peephole, two police officers in uniform were standing right in front of the door to apartment 303.
Two minutes passed. Click-clack. The doorknob turned, the crimson door opened, the policemen entered. They looked around with discerning, inquisitive eyes. One of Eva’s metal lockpicks bent under the weight of one of them accidentally stepping on it. That man stepped aside and looked at the objects on the ground while the other followed his gaze. They wordlessly exchanged a glance at each other and then looked at the living room.
One of them then asked out loud, “Anybody home?”
The other frowned at him and shook his head, then pushed open the closet and pulled the light switch hanging from the ceiling in there. Just enough jackets for two different seasons, two pairs of sneakers, one pair of dress shoes, an umbrella leaning against the wall in a corner, a very dusty Chicago Cubs baseball cap sitting by itself on a shelf overhead. After having satisfied his curiosity by noting the blandness of its interior, he switched the light back off and joined his colleague in the living room.
“How long did you say—”
“Three days. Mrs. Whitehurst said that wasn’t normal,” the other replied, cutting him off. He then looked down the hallway, past the open doors, and asked into the void, “Mr. Merritt?” Then after a pause, “Mr. Whitehurst?” He cautiously walked down the hall, and his right hand rested on his holstered firearm. “Miss Wolczek?”
They started exploring the other rooms of apartment 303 when the door slammed shut.
Then the jingling started.
Undecim sat alone in her bedroom on a sunny day. She felt unwanted in her own home after her family dismissed her pleads to play. Boredom drove her to reminisce about the toys she used to play with as a child and the games she enjoyed as a preteen.
She recalled Spiffy's Space, an online role-playing game designed for a young audience to explore a colorful universe of cartoon animals. Cartoons, shortened to toons, were at war with anarchists who lost sight of their silly side and mutated into machine hybrids called Cytoons. Their battles consisted of typical cartoon violence or common gags. Undecim shifted her focus to other games but Spiffy's Space dominated her thoughts, the title repeated itself in her head as her heart raced with anxiety.
Undecim typed the link into the address bar. A colorful website featuring Spiffy appeared on the screen, he gestured to the log-in button with a cheesy grin on his face. Spiffy resembled a Border Collie with green fur, a white underbelly, and white markings on his forearms and muzzle. He wore a red cape with a yellow S printed on the back, blue jean shorts, and red boots with yellow soles. Anyone who played the game remembered his habit of ending his sentences with “Awo! Awo!”
Undecim's old username and password filled the fields on the page. Her gaze shifted back to Spiffy, who appeared to be staring at her through the screen with great anticipation.
“That's strange,” Undecim muttered.
Creepie and Undecim's accounts were inactive for three years and were likely terminated. Undecim pressed the log-in button, her screen turned black and her speakers popped as though they shut themselves off. The longer she stared at the monitor the more she struggled to look past her growing discomfort.
Undecim was exposed to a monochromatic image of a defunct amusement park. A Ferris Wheel was in the foreground with Spiffy sitting in the top cart, behind him was a series of rides ready to collapse. This was the character selection screen, which was supposed to be cheery with a bright sun and a roller coaster in the background. Her custom characters no longer existed. Spiffy was her only choice.
Undecim held her breath as she clicked on Spiffy. The game started instantly, it should have taken fifteen minutes to load. Spiffy stood in the middle of a war-torn town surrounded by burning buildings and wilted plants covered in black soot, a desaturated color gradient emphasized the tragedy that struck Funtyme's Square.
Funtyme's Square was inspired by New York. This was the starting point designed with an onslaught of tutorials for players who joined the game, then they could explore the branching neighborhood streets, enter shops, or engage in the mini-games it had to offer. The sun was always shining, the grass was always green, the flowers danced, and players heckled each other among cheerful NPCs. Now Spiffy was the only toon left in the entire town. This realization triggered discordant music to fade in and play in the background. It was a haunting melody created from a warped version of the level's original track.
Undecim looked on in shock as she tried to imagine what could have turned their whimsical world into something so desolate. She swallowed hard and tapped the up key on her keyboard, Spiffy lurched forward and stumbled to a stop. She guided the toon through an avenue and beheld abandoned buildings set ablaze like those in Funtyme's Square. Puddles of oil covered the pavement and sidewalks, accompanied by grotesquely shaped heads with metal plates grafted to them. The most prominent heads belonged to a Cytoon species called Lackey, which was based on a Golden Retriever.
The Lackey had a permanent open-mouthed smile and tightly closed eyes, though its in-game dialogue implied it was depressed or actually hated its boss. The eyes of the deceased Lackeys were wide open and their jaws hung slack to give an impression of terror, their lifeless eyes fixed on Undecim through the monitor. Cytoons were considered another brick in an industrial wall, lifeless beings who were no longer welcome in society after they gave up their individuality for a suit. They were scorned for believing what they were taught in The Academy. These soulless creatures were incapable of emotion but their gruesome expressions made Undecim think twice about their portrayals. Still, she had yet to question what kind of monster actuated others to engage in genocide.
Spiffy turned a corner and came to a halt. He gazed at a burning police station in the middle of a cul-de-sac. Undecim felt her chest tighten when she realized she could no longer move him, he shook his head in silent refusal when she tapped a key. A series of barking sounds brought Undecim's attention to blue text in the bottom left corner of the screen.
Spiffy: Burning.
Undecim moved her mouse to the X at the top of the screen but it did not respond. Sweat ran down her forehead and her breathing intensified, she feared the beast that killed the inhabitants of Spiffy's Space would make itself known.
The location changed when Spiffy turned to face the screen with a sad expression. He stood outside of The Academy, where Cytoons were“manufactured” from toons who wanted a serious approach to life. The level was bleak and foreboding, challenging players to infiltrate an amalgamation of a college institute and a penitentiary. The sun's absence left a dark gray overcast above the establishment and prevented life from sprouting in the dry black soil. Cytoons marched the premises en masse as convenient guards to protect their territory. Now it was quiet, the monochrome color scheme it boasted felt truly depressing.
Spiffy's expression changed. He sprinted after a Lackey who passed by in the background.
What is his fascination with Lackeys? Undecim wondered.
She gritted her teeth when Spiffy turned to face the screen with a glare. This emotion was designed to come with a comical tantrum but Spiffy looked on with an intimidating stare. Text appeared in the bottom left corner.
Spiffy: Faces.
A mischievous smile crept across Spiffy's muzzle. A chill ran down Undecim's spine, her instincts told her to flee from the room but she remained seated and stared at the monitor.
Spiffy caught up to the Lackey with ease. Undecim hoped he would do something silly once he captured it, she uttered a nervous laugh at the thought. Spiffy tackled the Lackey and pinned it to the ground, a sound crossed between a yelping dog and grinding gears emit from the Cytoon as it struggled against him.
Spiffy amputated the Lackey's legs with a saw he pulled from hammerspace, blood sprayed from the wounds instead of oozing oil like its brethren. Undecim watched as Spiffy tied a rope around its neck. He dragged it across the barren land and kicked open the factory door, he was met with anguished screams echoing from the fire inside the building.
Undecim wanted to call for help but she could not find her voice. She watched Spiffy lug the helpless Cytoon up a flight of stairs, orange text entered itself in the corner of the screen as the Lackey pleaded for its life. The staircase led to a small balcony above a roaring pit of fire. Spiffy cornered the Lackey by a metal rail on the balcony and stabbed it with a screwdriver. High-pitched male screams blared from Undecim's speakers and forced her to cover her ears with a gasp. She hyperventilated, the painful throbbing of her heart made her body feel numb. Past the pitch shift, Undecim swore what she heard was true death.
Spiffy pulled a drill from his pocket and pressed it against the Lackey's head. The Cytoon writhed about as its distorted screams mixed with the loud whir of his tool. Spiffy looked on with a dark expression, he held his arm in place as he became drenched in blood. Spiffy dropped the drill when he grew bored and grabbed the end of the rope, he effortlessly swung the Lackey over the rail and held onto it with inhuman strength. Undecim jerked back in her seat when a brutal snap came through her speakers.
Another abrupt change took them to a place that did not exist on the map in the game. It was a grassy plain littered with the bodies of toons and Cytoons surrounded by realistic piles of viscera and pools of blood. A hill with a single tree atop of it could be seen farther away in the distance. Spiffy stood stock-still as he stared at the hellscape before him.
Tears welled in Undecim's eyes and her lip quivered. “Why?” she whimpered. She knew Spiffy could hear her even if she kept her thoughts to herself.
Spiffy's head twisted back as he ran toward the hill. Open wounds riddled his face and a terrible burn marred the right side of his head. His jaw hung slack to the left, exposing rotten, jagged teeth. His large, black eye sockets were surrounded by a gray aura, blood ran from them and seeped into the infected cuts on his muzzle. The corners of Spiffy's mouth managed to turn upward in a grin.
Spiffy: Didn't you think it was funny?
His eyebrows expressed sadness when Undecim shook her head in response. The world's colors faded to gray and grew darker the further he ran, piles of bodies materialized as he came closer to the hill. Spiffy's relentless staring made Undecim squirm in her seat.
Spiffy: Look what you have done to this beautiful place. All of these people.
“I never did anything!” Undecim shouted.
The toon's eyebrows raised and his twisted grin returned.
Spiffy: Accept your fate.
Spiffy made pained grunts as he closed in on the tree. His health points depleted and his body became frail. Spiffy's grunts turned to audio clips of a real dog whimpering by the time he stood five feet away from the base. Spiffy stumbled to a stop, fell to his knees, and flopped onto his stomach. He remained still, surrounded by bodies with hollow eye sockets. Undecim jumped in her seat when fire engulfed the corpses and grass with a loud igniting sound.
Undecim snapped out of her trance when the game closed itself out, she ran down the hall and begged Hekima for his assistance. Undecim gave her father a hasty explanation of what she had witnessed and convinced him to give her computer a complete reboot. The complex process required an electrical box in the wall, which held a “reset laser” inside of it. Hekima shouted for his family to duck as a laser ricocheted off the floor and ceiling. Undecim kept her distance from the laser. The memory of Spiffy's Space would be transferred into a person's mind if they let it come in contact with their eyes. Undecim never wanted to see Spiffy again, nor did she want her family members to suffer the same burden.
Undecim spent the rest of the dream reinstalling her programs. It was an inconvenience but she assured herself it was not so bad compared to what she went through. —- Art by @princesslovelydreams Story Excerpt from The Inner Council: Dream Journal by Casselle and Joyelle King
February Favorites
February was an unusual month for me. I rarely travel these days, but in early Feb I flew to DC for a girls trip- which was truly amazing but also left my skin destroyed (no sleep, terrible diet, dry airplanes) and it took the whole month to recover (hormones!!). I also got paid a little extra and decided to treat myself to some new things after several months of buying gifts for others only.
skincare
- I broke down a few weeks ago and ordered the newly available smaller size of the Sunday Riley UFO Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil. I know I’ve talked about SR and this specific product before, but it’s truly the only thing that treats and prevents my breakouts, ESPECIALLY hormonal ones. For half the price you can get half the full size, and I honestly think that’s all anyone needs since you’re only using it 2-3 times a week and a little goes a long way.
- In my Sephora Play box this month I got a sample of the Clinique Pep Start moisturizer, which I was surprised to learn is also a pore-filling/blurring primer! I really liked the way my skin looked after application, and the fact that it does double duty as skincare. If you have truly dry skin you might need to apply a heavier moisturizer underneath, but it worked amazing for my oily skin. Would be fantastic for someone who doesn’t need coverage but wants to have smooth, even-looking skin.
- I don’t think I’ve talked about GlamGlow products before because many of them irritate my skin, but this month I turned back to what is IMO the best one- the Supermud Clearing Treatment mask (in the white container). I have a small size that I use as a spot treatment when I get my monthly chin outbreak or anytime my skin feels congested, and it honestly works within minutes. It either brings stubborn zits to the surface or calms inflamed ones and reduces redness. I don’t think I’d use this all over my face, but as a specific area mask it’s amazing
beauty
- I finally tried (and liked) a new foundation! I decided to check out the Estee Lauder Double Wear Light range (the original Double Wear was a little too heavy and a little too yellow-leaning) and damn... WE HAVE A WINNER. As we all know, I have extremely oily skin that eats makeup and causes thin formulas (like most BB creams or tinted moisturizers) to simply slide off over the course of a day. This is the only lightweight foundation I’ve tried that stays put, even without a major dose of powder. I love that it’s low maintenance enough that I can throw it on to go to my office or run errands, but full coverage enough that I can wear it for a night out too. If you have oily skin, you need this.
- I haven’t changed my eyeliner game in years, and I decided I wanted to step out of the box a bit... but not too much! So I tried the step-sister of my beloved MAC Teddy- MAC’s modern twist Kajal liner in “groundbreaker”. It’s still a shimmery brown, but it’s more of a bronze than a warm gold like Teddy. I’ve been smudging this into my lash line instead of using liquid liner for a wing and loving the low key messy vibe. Plus I think it makes my eyes look extra blue!
- Another thing we know I love is a good peach blush. Of course I love MAC Peaches, a matte coral shade, and NARS Luster, a shimmery peachy-pink. But I wanted to see if there was one in between the two (a secret about me is that I often mix blushes because one is too bright or too matte or too whatever) that would be juuuust right. I tried MAC Style, which was a little too orange-y for me though I kept it and will continue using it for mixology... and kept my eye on several other high end peaches. Then I saw that a dupe for Too Faced’s “I Will Always Love You” blush is Wet N Wild’s Color Icon blush in “Apricot In The Middle”. I picked it up immediately ($3!) and it’s fantastic. I would say it’s a slightly more orange-toned version of Milani Luminoso (the infamous peach drugstore blush), and lasts a little longer. If you’re looking for that peach-y glow, definitely try it out.
- Also in my PLAY box this month was a sample size of the NARS velvet lip guide in the shade “bound”. This one is tricky to describe- it’s not a matte liquid lipstick that dries down and doesn’t budge, it’s got a sheen to it but it’s not a gloss, and it does last a good amount. Bound is also hard to describe- it’s like a muted dusty rose? Almost a desaturated version of my exact lip color, which makes it perfect for every day. And because it’s almost moisturizing there’s not the same fussing an intensely matte lipstick requires. I can see myself buying the full size of this shade and wearing it to pretty much anything.
clothing
- This month I ordered 3 new pieces from ASOS Curve and love them all. I’ve been wanting a black wrap-top jumpsuit for months, and I finally caved during the President’s Day sale and picked this one up. It fits well and is comfortable but fancy enough to be worn to a nice event. I also grabbed this polka dotted wrap dress because it’s very on brand for me, and when I tried it on BF said it’s his favorite thing I’ve ever worn! It’s almost a sliky blouse material but totally opaque and also comfy. Very 50s pin-up. Finally I ordered this pale pink leather jacket totally on a whim, and have decided that it’s perfect for my needs. It’s edgy without being dark (like all my other clothes), comfortable and lightweight enough to be worn over bulky sweaters in the winter or light dresses in the spring. It also fits me almost exactly the same as the model, which is a surprise that never happens.
etc.
- BF and I have been sleeping on a literally nailed together wooden bed frame we got mostly for free with our queen mattress this past fall. We decided we needed an upgrade and something a little lighter, and went with this white metal frame from Ikea. At first I was skeptical that it looked a little hospital-y, but it’s exactly what our small bedroom needed, and is so lightweight that it will be a charm to move.
- John Wick 2 was great! As was re-watching the original. Moana was kind of fun, though I thought the songs sucked. BF and I have also been re-watching the first season of True Detective, which of course is amazing, and I’ve been re-watching all of Pretty Little Liars.
- Food-wise, I’ve been enjoying Halo clementines, though they also are the culprit behind some bad heartburn episodes. I like to keep mine in the fridge after they ripen a bit, because there is nothing better than a cold orange of any kind. I also picked up these Gatorade 32 oz water bottles, which are probably the best water bottle I’ve ever used: They’re spill proof but easy to drink from, you can unscrew the top to add ice, and they’re cheap enough that replacing is easy!
xoxo
