I probably should have started doing this forever ago but I wasn’t sure how long I was gonna stick with drawing these comics. But I guess we’re in it now! This will be continually updated~ EVERYTHING UNDER THE CUT
BEFORE YOU START:
This post is required reading about Team Rocket’s ages since that’s usually a question that comes up a lot LOL. As for Delia’s age, she is said to be 29 in Takeshi Shudo’s (original writer on Pokémon) novel that built out the world and characters of the anime.
Next, I feel like this chart helps give the vibe of what these characters relationship is (all just headcanons except for their names and ages)!

FAQ:
What does "Hanamusa" mean?
Hanamusa is a combination of Delia and Jessie's Japanese names, Hanako and Musashi respectively.
When does this AU take place?
It takes place sometime after the Mezase Pokémon Master/To Be a Pokémon Master series. So all the events that happened in the series, unless retconned within the series, happened. Ash is 10 at the start of the comics.
What's the status between Jessie, James, Meowth and Giovanni/Team Rocket?
Not great terms since they were fired, but also not the worst terms. Giovanni just let the three of them go without any further issues.
I will say that I've always loved the theory that Giovanni keeps Jessie specifically around because of her parentage and he as a soft spot for her that he keeps a secret. I feel like Matori was the one that got the three of them fired and Giovanni wasn't able to make an excuse for them this time (without showing nepotism/special treatment) so he was forced to let them go.
If you headcanon Delia as a lesbian, how did Ash come to be?
Delia was young when she had Ash and I hc that she just didn’t really explore her sexuality much! I myself didn’t realized I liked women until I was 18 and didn’t know I liked ONLY women until like 2 years ago. She got married, had a baby and realized after her husband left that she liked women (trans people exist obviously but I’m also interpreting Ash’s father as a cis man).
Who do you think Ash’s dad is?
I don’t know and I don’t really care to explore it. I’m going off of the novel interpretation that he’s just a deadbeat that left to be a trainer, failed and never came back because of the shame. He’s not important.
Isn’t Giovanni Ash’s dad?
That’s a common misconception that people remember wrong from the Pokémon Live show. Delia mentions she dated Giovanni but then left him and his gang after meeting Ash’s father. I also don’t consider the live show canon personally! I follow The Birth of Mewtwo timeline where Madame Boss founded Team Rocket.
Do you think Delia and Giovanni dated at least?
Nah, I think he’s too old for her? I always got the vibe from The Birth of Mewtwo that he was quite a bit older than Jessie and it’d be sus if he was dating Delia when she was married to, and had a child with her husband at 18/19. He’s a bad guy but not a BAD guy.
You mentioned you still ship Jessie and James. Why not make a Jessie, James, Delia polycule?
I have a few reasons I’ve mentioned before! 1. I’m in super deep with this AU already and I feel it’d be very confusing for casual viewers of my stuff if James was added into the relationship haha. 2. I’ve drawn Jessie and James together since 2011 and took this AU as an opportunity to try my hand at writing them as queer, platonic besties bc I love that interpretation of them a lot as well. 3. I’m not poly myself and the way I write this ship is largely based off of my experiences with my girlfriend. I just know I’d favor the Jessie/Delia of it all which isn’t fair and not a good interpretation of a poly relationship. All that said, I DO super enjoy seeing peoples’ poly headcanons and art!
Who does James end up with in this AU?
No one. He's aroace and is happy to be single
Do Jessie and James have all their Pokémon in this AU
I think they have all the Pokémon that they did by the end of Mezase Pokémon Master (all their Pokémon that were left at HQ). Most of their released Pokémon have stayed released and the Alola Pokémon are still in Alola. I bring back Arbok and Weezing post-Jessie and Delia getting married. I may bring back Chimecho, Growlie and Cacnea if I think of an idea I like!

Does Ash travel with anyone at this point of his life?
I don't have anyone in particular in mind! I could see him making new friends (Nemona???) or traveling with different combinations of old friends. Like him, Misty and Goh, him, Dawn and Cilan, him, Serena and Lillie etc.
Will Delia ever get over her phobia of snake Pokémon
Not fully! I think overcoming fears is fine and good but I think real PHOBIAS are much harder to get past and I don't want to cheapen it. She slowly gets used to Jessie's Seviper specifically and gets to the point where she can pet it comfortably with Jessie in the room. But otherwise, still scared and would need that same amount of time per Pokémon
Is Jessie gaining weight or is it just me?
Not just you! Jessie puts on a bit of relationship weight overtime as you'll see in the later comics in the timeline. Jessie grew in poverty, never knowing when her next meal would be and that continued into her life as a Team Rocket member. Once she was able to settle down (with a woman who runs her own restaurant no less) she's able to live a healthier lifestyle with regular meals and puts on some weight because of that.
Does Jessie ever feel self conscious about gaining weight?
Nope! She feels happier and healthier and hotter. She's also unreasonably excited to clear out her old clothes and get a new wardrobe.
Would Jessie and Delia ever have kids together or adopt?
Nah, Ash is enough for them! I have come up with hypothetical kids for them but they're not canon to this AU. Just a fun little thing for me.
Will you ever put this on webtoon?
Nah. People mostly ask me this because they want to read everything in the order of the timeline but to my knowledge, you can’t reorder chapters or installments which would defeat the purpose. I also don’t think nintendo fan stuff would fly there. Also, also it’s just extra work and another place to upload and I want to keep this all fun for myself~

Bndori furries are fun to design and all but it is Killing me that I can't give most of them long sharp claws. Local bndori fan shocked at the presence of instrument players in the band game with bands in it

Winner Gijinka redesign! I like to think they swap between the skirt and pants depending on the challenge.
Uh I don’t know why I thought their old design was ever okay to bestow on human eyes!
Cut below the entire design process (it’s gonna be long)
So I knew immediately after finishing my Loser design I wanted Winner to be the opposite of Loser. Which ment no warm colors, no vest sleeveless thing, no sunglasses, esc. I wanted them to be 80s inspired to match my Loser’s 70s Inspiration! I wanted them to parallel Loser by being so different but the same at the same time. So I wanted to do alot.
I think very clearly with the first ever winner draft (on the right) I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING LOL. I really don’t like it now looking back and it really doesn’t feel like Winner to me. I think just to show how old this is, this was before I even made established age headcanons so I also had no idea how older I wanted Winner to be.
That age headcanon list will probably be shown at another time, I think I showed it once on instagram after somebody asked.
The one on the left I did right after I finished my Loser design and oh my god I also really hate it looking back. I had this idea that Winner’s hair could be the opposite of Loser’s hair where instead of being from like brown to blond and lighter blond it would be the opposite and oh it looked horrible to me.😭
I think also at this point Winner was still just black and not biracial
Now here are what I would call my “Stuck in design hell”. Characters I struggle with immensely when creating a design I think fits/I personally also like for them. It doesn’t mean I have no ideas, some of them I know exactly what I want to do with them but can’t figure out how to emulate it. I ended up abandoning Winner for awhile because they were giving me so many problems because I set so many restrictions for myself which weren’t exactly working.
So then we got this.. I tried to force myself to finalize their design on the spot… bad idea.. worse idea I could ever fathom. I don’t like any of these designs and plus the way I draw now has changed since I made these designs. I had an idea that Winner’s arm could also be translated as one of those super cool arm grabber toys from the 80s which I don’t know, maybe I’ll bring back?? Depends on how I feel about it after focusing on writing more Winner central stories and exploring Winner more as a character and talking to people who really like Winner.
I should also note the inspo for Winner in the fluffy coat and overalls came from the fact that when I was in the movie theater, I saw a kid wearing black overalls and periwinkle jacket and went “HOLY SHIT WINNER TPOT.”
Somewhat unrelated but in this design Winner also became Biracial because @/exitstudent was like “Oh Winner feels afro-Latino to me” so I changed my headcanon almost immediately. This is why I probably shouldn’t have put my race hc chart out so early because my opinions get swayed so easily PLUS I changed a few things around. (Nothing to major, Snowball and Spongey are Wasian now, Donut is Dutch, put Bomby back in Blasian, Gaty is Finnish)
I also had the idea that instead of Winner having highlights (because I highly doubt Winner would go out of their way to highlight their hair) their greying really early on due to stress and poor genetics probably. Another cool parallel to Loser about how Loser’s hair is something he essentially paid for Winner in a way earned theirs. Loser also bleaching pretty much all their hair would also be a cool symbolism for how he’s not the truest to himself while Winner’s still having almost all their natural hair color is symbolism for them being way more true to themself. But that’s for another day to explore.
I tried to interpret Winner’s shape as being kind of like fuzzy fleece on their jacket and I tried to make this work so bad but I really shouldn’t have. I was just all over the place with the colors too.
After design a bunch of the other characters and finding and discovering new ways i like drawing i quickly figured out why I was hating Winner so badly.
It was everything 😭
So after actually after researching 80s fashion instead of half assing it to make it obvious. I drew up these two concepts.
My first realization was “Wow that fleece is ugly as shit.” So I realized I had to stop trying making the fleece work, kudos to anyone who can. But away from the negatives, I really did love the big black Jacket and the legwarmers (I am a sucker for leg warmers so once I put them in them, it was over for me) Something about the headband also struck me because previously I out a strict “no head accessories rule” but honestly? It really just had to be not sunglasses so the headband stayed.
With some color rework and some help from my qpp (Shout out to her, she doesn’t use social media.) We were finally able to get the current design shown!
I guess if I learned anything from this, people should make gijinkas also based off people they know and see in day to day life. Some of my favorite gijinkas are based off people I know. Like Match being an Afro-Chilean Jew is because my friend who actually introduced me to BFDI was a huge match fan, and an Afro-Chilean Jew so I was inspired to make Match look almost identical to them. With Winner I pulled inspiration from alot of popular Black celebrities in the 80s and Chile again because of said friend 80s.

--green & leaf were raised by blaine after their parents death. very free range but still.
--brock and bruno are cousins
--agatha and bertha are sisters. their family moved around a lot when they were kids and agatha liked kanto more while bertha preferred sinnoh
--winona and anabel could be siblings? they have those similar ponytails which is flawless logic by pokemon standards
--wallace & lisia and wally. and kris. lisia, wally, and kris & daphne are all cousins : )
oh gosh theres also the thing i refer to here as [redacted] which is n is the middle brother between kris and daphne. he doesnt know this and daphne doesnt even know she has a brother bc of how young they were when he was lost so it never comes up even when they meet : (
also also bc i started this whole thing with the joke that all the characters with light green/turquoise hair are related, proton is wallaces cousin while katy is his....first cousin once removed? *looks at chart* yea thats the right one. she's lisias age.

--silver, mars, and roark are all siblings (listed youngest to oldest). they all have ariana as a mother. she was married to byron, had roark and mars, they divorced and she moved away and had silver with giovanni. and arezu is arianas ancestor.
--on that note, ilima is the descendent of palina and iscan. i think thats the most likely candidate for them
--valerie is the youngest kimono girl and gets to help summon ho oh/lugia with her eevee
--greta is viola and alexis' younger sister. greta moved to hoenn bc it has a better battling culture
--tina from pokemon masters is alders granddaughter. whether shes bengas sister or cousin idk. i think im leaning towards cousin.
--idk how yet, but i do vibe with piers & marnie being related to grimsley. their uncle perhaps? when his familys fortune fell, his much older sibling ditched him for galar (trying to make money from their commercialized gym challenge?) and then had some kids there. neither party knows the other well.
--there is some relation between shelly and nessa but idk what. shelly is her aunt perhaps?
--i love that art i reblogged a while ago of larry and juan being related. the difference in personality makes it SO funny. the art had them as cousins but i think brothers might be even funnier (and funny should always win). im thinking they have a sootopolitan parent and a paldean parent. had juan, roughly 10 yrs later had larry as a way to not get divorced, got divorced anyways, and then each one took a kid. they keep in touch tho
--wikstrom is giacomo's father. i considered larry but i think wikstrom works better.
--hassel is iris's uncle. his younger brother is her father and the girl sent to bring him back to the family is iris' older sister who never left the village

Extremely Cursed TGAA Hygiene Chart: Best to Worst
I don’t follow this chart in my TGAA fanfics for the sake of my mental health. much like how when I write something horny in period pieces I’m electing not to calculate the likelihood that any given character would contract syphilis. but I and my friend who I made this with as a joke have to live with this knowledge and now so do you. without further ado, let’s go.
Bathes Frequently
Susato (by far the cleanest major character. too polite to comment on everyone else’s hygiene but rest assured she is thinking about it. periods are taken care of with a Vengeance.)
Barok (he’s a refined wealthy boy so that shower game is strong. probably also wears cologne or fancy soap and carries wipes with him everywhere. mild clean freak vibes.)
Bathes Normally For The Era
Iris (hasn’t hit puberty yet so doesn’t have all the nasty body stuff going on that the teens and adults have. thus the cleanest member of this category.)
Gregson (bathes as much as Iris but is a middle-aged man and thus does not have that childhood BO immunity.)
Ryunosuke (probably bathed more back home but bathes a bit less while in England because he’s forgetful and dealing with a lot right now. he doesn’t seem like he frequently smells terrible though so he also probably doesn’t feel he needs to as much. a sweaty boy but has good genes ig. Susato dunks him in bathwater when he forgets for too long.)
Bathes At Worrying Infrequency
Albert (it’s not that he doesn’t WANT to shower. he’s considerably more aware of bacteria and pathogens and the ill effects of poor hygiene than the average Victorian Brit. he just gets really focused on his work and forgets. sometimes for weeks. until Barok has to come into the lab and dunk him in bathwater.)
Kazuma (idk if I understand this one given Japan’s cultural propensity for bathing but my friend swears by this hc on her life to the point where I now think it’s funny. samurai probably used to smell awful after they went out to war due to the blood and sweat and armor and Kazuma is trying to honor his ancestors. he never got the memo that those samurai definitely bathed afterward.)
Gina (couldn’t exactly afford to shower as a homeless teen in the slums. periods were a nightmare but she did the best she could and still does. now has a steady paycheck, but still refuses to bathe. has done so only once in her life and it’s because Gregson dunked her in bathwater. it is the only thing she never forgave him for.)
Herlock (does he know what a shower is? does he know that soap is for something other than consumption? or is he fully aware that he should shower, yet doesn’t for some unthinkable reason? no one knows. perhaps he is studying the bacteria on his own skin. Yujin spent years trying to dunk Herlock in bathwater but was very much unsuccessful. Iris would make him bathe more often but she is too small to consistently force him.)

Decided to make and share my shipping chart for the Danganronpa series, since I've been a fan for just about two years now.
If a ship isn't in there, that means either I'm neutral or didn't consider it.
Also, yes, I am aware how much of a clusterfuck the V3 section is. It's the game's fault for making everyone work together so well. The most important thing there though is that Tenko x Himiko x Angie is the OT3 tbh.
Just to clarify some:
- I know Rantaro x Tsumugi is a weird one to be in favor of, but it's mostly because of the headcanon that they were both the two survivors of the 52nd season, and actually good friends before having their memories altered/removed.
- Celeste x Sonia might also be an odd and rare one, but there's just something about Celestia "I want an European castle" Ludenberg meeting Sonia who actually has a castle, and them sort of... getting along surprisingly well.
- The games' trios: Makoto/Byakuya/Kyoko, Hajime/Nagito/Chiaki, Shuichi/Maki/Kaito are kinda OT3s for me, though still, Tenko/Angie/Himiko is my favorite one, just wish Tenko got along better with Angie in the game :/
- I didn't put Korekiyo anywhere in the image, but... I would not let him touch any of the V3 girls with a 10 foot pole. Or any of the guys, really, though those would at least be safer.
- I didn't put Chihiro in (whom I hc as transfem btw, so please she/her or they/them only) but that's mostly bc I don't know who would be a good ship for her? She's such a sweet bean that she deserves the best... Probably would just make Sayaka and Mukuro her protection squad tbh?
- Honestly, any ship with Tenko and men is just wrong imo. Rantaro and Kiyo are the ones that particularly baffle me, but other ones are also bad... the only one I can semi-stomach is Shuichi, but even then... She spends the whole game saying she doesn't like men, she's gay y'all.
And uhh... I think that's all I wanted to add? If you have any questions, like about the ships/characters I didn't include, feel free to ask them. Random Relationship Headcanons | Felix Escellun x gn!reader
a/n: Hey ! On todays menu I am serving you modern au relationship headcanons. I know for a fact that I can’t write headcanons AT ALL yet here we are, out of spite I will keep trying until I can manage to write good shit. I’m going through a chaotic time in my life so please be patient with me 😭
I’m currently working on tattoo artist! reader x Felix headcanons and college!enemies to lovers one-shot. Knowing that Felix’s fav trope is enemies to lovers, I will post it hopefully before his new chapter drops. I used most of the hcs that were sent to me but if you couldn’t see yours, then it will probably be used on the other works.
No beta we die like men.
warnings: curse words, nsfw under the cut, random sage moments, felix being a ‘the neighborhood’ song basically.
You persuade him to start an Instagram account, and because of his family's popularity, he quickly gains followers. His account is practically empty because he would rather spend his time stalking your account on Instagram. You noticed the emptiness and wanted to take him out and take some photos for his account, which turned out amazingly. He is a little camera shy, so be patient with him.
You like to watch him apply his eyeliner but he finds it so stressing to do under your gaze. He used to be able to do it easily, but it has now become one of his most difficult tasks. You wanted to ask for his assistance in applying eyeliner to you in the hopes of making it simpler for him; he agreed but quickly regretted it when he realized how near your faces would be. You with your eyes closed, waiting for him to drag the line as he was only thinking about how bad he wanted to kiss you. 
Felix has a Polaroid of you and stella in his wallet I said what I said.
When it comes to himself, he can be a pessimist, but when it comes to you, he is the most loving and positive boyfriend you could ever ask for. You have a dream ? He is ready to help you achieve it. Do you want to change in your life ? Go for it, He’s more excited than you are.
He can be quite insecure at times when it comes to your relationship because he feels like you deserve the world but the world is too big for his tiny hands. Will his cuddles be enough ? God he hopes so.
He almost cried when you told him you loved him for the first time. He's also baffled as to how you might feel the same way about him.
Drunk Felix is really clingy and honest. Whatever he can’t say sober drunk felix can and definitely will.

Felix is weird but it add to his charm. It’s not unusual for you to wake up in the middle of the night and find the pillow besides yours empty. In the dead of night, you will find Felix munching on some weird ass food combinations.
He also has a habit of doing things that are extremely adorable without even noticing it. Like walking around the house in his oversized shirts, his hand clutching at the cuffs whilst the other one sheepishly rubs his eye.
“Can I lay on your lap ? I promise I won’t fall asleep. I just need to rest for a little.” His voice is so soft and hushed.
“Of course, come here.” He throws himself onto you as he comes hopping on his tip toes.
He falls asleep on his desk too often, so you have to carry him back to his room, where he snuggles against you while you lead him there. Once he's in his room, he insists that you stay with him, so you wait until he falls asleep as you play with his hair, and he wakes up thinking it was all a dream.
I firmly believe that Felix’s love language is acts of service. Like making you coffee and bringing you random snacks as you work or wrapping you up in fluffy blankets whenever he catches you slacking on the couch.
He's been romanticizing anything and everything since he met you. When he sees beautiful flowers, he wants to bring them to you, but he also believes that their beauty stems from the fact that they are alive, so he argues and stresses a lot when deciding what to do in simple situations like these.
His edginess belongs to his impulsiveness and his style only at any other situation he's a complete softboy.
And I'm certain he knows a variety of card tricks. He enjoys showing off, and he enjoys it even more when you become fascinated and beg him to share the trick.
If you're a morning person, you'll probably spend your mornings alone in solitude, finishing work before the day begins, but if you're a night owl, you and Felix will go out for night walks and Felix would go out for night walks, sharing headphones to play some music, enjoy each others presence and develop a habit of watching the sunrise together.
Felix makes you playlists at the most random times and with the most random names. Until one day he sent you a playlist at around 4 a.m called “you”, filled with his favorite music. He usually sees music as a safe space for himself and now that you are his safe place too it’s only appropriate for him to do so. This only further proves how he spends his time thinking about you.
I feel like Felix would have what most would call "attachment issues" but it’s mainly because of his protective tendencies. This is not to say that he’s this "overly jealous toxic" character; rather, he has never had anyone to truly call his own in his entire life so he would do anything to protect it.
Felix is also big on astrology, so if you want the perfect birth chart, he'll give it to you. Also he owns a lovely deck of tarot cards, and if you ask him for a love reading, he can't manage to keep his words and feelings to himself so he modifies your reading according to him and his desires. Let the boy abuse his powers for the sake of love.
His style could be described as dark academia, his wardrobe mainly consists of dark colors, lots and lots of blazers and a lot of oversized shirts. He also loves jewelry so he owns a lot of rings and chains. Just so you know, if you're wearing any of his rings, his heart is doing cartwheels.
Is it obvious that he loves it when you place your hand in his and play with his rings with your fingertips.
Spoil him. Buy him that baby blue hoodie with cat ears.
“Ah, you look adorable.”
“Isn’t it a bit too b-big ?”
“You could say that. Do you mind ?”
“No, I like it that way.”
“I would know.” You smirk followed by felix’s gasp.
“If you so desperately wanted a cat boy you know you have me right ?” Nudging your shoulder, Sage leapt into the conversation.
“What is he talking about ?” Felix grumbled, only to notice two fuzzy triangular fabrics on top of his head as he brushed his fingertips over it.
He’s obsessed with your hands, kissing your knuckles, drawing circles in your palm. At a certain point it became an involuntary gesture he does it quite often without realizing.
He’s also canonically extremely blushy but he would never admit it. You’re convinced he uses some sort of make up because it is not possible for the pink dusting his cheeks to look this good.
He insists that you’re cold even in the warmest weathers because he wants to see you in his coat.
Sage forces Felix to take his thirst trap Tiktoks.
He really appreciates it when you add to his herbal tea collection without him noticing and he considers it a sign of affection because he takes his tea very seriously.
He loses it when you call him baby he gets flustered and frustrated but it’s all because it rolls off of your tongue so nicely that he can’t get enough of it.
Felix owns a broad collection of scented lip balms some of them are tinted. You didn’t hear this from me.
He never once took anything the Sage says seriously until he saw how well you two got along. He never thought that he would be standing there taking relationship and flirting advice from the frat boy.
Felix is a complete asshole when he wants to. He’s very verbal about it too. Consistent sarcastic remarks and eye rolls. I mean it runs in his blood, look at Escell.
You love it when he suddenly whips out the confident Felix, it’s not a daily occurrence you know.
When Felix is concentrated, he’s lost and there’s almost no way you or anything else can distract him. So it’s time to grab some colorful hair clips and ties to fuck around with his hair.
Felix is not the best at verbally expressing his gratitude towards you. He doesn’t know what he would do if you weren’t there for him at the lowest points of his life where normally he would close himself and bare the weight of his family problems and personal life issues that he can’t seem to get out of. Now he has you, someone who’s willing to listen to him and offer him a warm embrace when he needs the most. 
While you to play games together, when he wins he wears that iconic shit eating grin of his with pride looking at you through the corner of his eye. “Shit, what do you want me to say to that felix ? Perhaps I should call you master now that you won ‘one’ fucking round.” He is praying that the screen light is covering the fact that he is a blushy mess after hearing you say that.

He’s quite greedy when it comes to you and your hands on his body. Unbuttoning unnecessary amount of buttons on his shirt to show a little skin that he knows you’ll notice. Playing with his necklace placing the chain between his lips dragging it towards the inside of his bottom lip teasing the metallic charm with the tip of his tongue. He definitely ain’t oblivious he knows exactly what he’s doing and he makes sure that you know exactly what he’s doing.
When he’s in the mood he will tug the hem of your top meanwhile his eyes are glued to the floor or graze the temples of his glasses between his lips, his teeth lightly nibbling the pointy edge. He loves to play dumb too. When you question him, he acts like he doesn’t intend anything and that you need to get your head out of the gutter.
At the end of the session Felix looks divine. Drool leaking down from his bottom lip to his jaw line towards his neck, his bangs sticking on his sweat coated forehead, his chest rising up and down quickly. His eyes rolled at the back of his head, his hands still clutching tightly to the sheets. Faint whimpers and deep breaths filling the air.
Leading up to the after care, his shy self returns. He buries his face to your chest hiding his blushy cheeks beneath the palms of his hands.

When you two are in separate places your suggestive words and tone leads up to phone sex, which Felix secretly fantasized about a lot. What made everything even more dirty was the fact that you didn’t know that he was laying on your bed surrounded by your scent and humping your pillow. Once you come back home you are greeted with a fresh pair of sheets on your bed. Apparently Felix decided to do you a favor and clean your room as well as the the whole house. He’s crossing fingers that you don’t notice because he knows that he’ll never hear the end of it.
Felix knows a lot about sex but his knowledge is based upon fiction rather than experience. So, naturally, he is more interested about learning specifically how your body responds to certain actions, what you enjoy and what you’re interested in so teach him. He’s a good student and oh well he’s a quick learner.

Hinata (he's my fave hq character, and just might be my fave character in anything ever; I love his sunny personality so much, and when he goes feral, boi, yes go crazy you tiny little ball of sunshine. “I sprouted from the concrete“ ?? we don’t talk about the pure rawness of that line enough. chills. and his growth through the series is just 👌 💯✨ unmatched. the ball boy arc made me tear up (Hinata bby, he’s so good at making friends) and then the receive in Inarizaki match?? proud tears. him going to Brazil to train?? 🤧 when the line "I'm home!" gets animated I will cry)

Aran (this poor dude has been putting up with Twins for years and if that doesn’t buy your respect then, idk maybe him being one of the top 5 aces will? him being the on-court captain? of all the Inarizaki players Ukai being the most worried about him? Hoshiumi (he's the definition of 'poison being in small bottles'; I love this tiny feral seagull; his rivalry with Hinata? amazing. my only complain is we didn’t get more of it. his words to Hirugami when he was feeling down and fed up with volleyball? yes Hoshiumi, ur so right!! also time skip Hoshiumi is wow wow wow a revelation indeed 👀 )
Bessho (I read the line ‘Goody McGooders’ and I haven’t been the same since. I stand on the edge of falling in love with him too. he's cute, his inner monologue is hilarious, his current concern makes me laugh. what more do u want in a man? except being real)

He would be super stressed and needing time away from looking over maps and charts and reports, so he would ask if you wanted to get out for a while.
He’d take you somewhere far away from the city and away from prying eyes.
The two of you would probably be horseback riding in the middle of some random field that hadn’t been used during a battle. Somewhere wide and open where you could watch the sun set bleed colors across the sky.
He would note how nice it was to not have to be anything other than himself during times like these and how happy he was to be with you.
He would just say he loved you so nonchalantly like he was commenting on the weather.
Nerron
He somehow got stuck with you on a treasure hunt a while ago, and he hasn’t been able to get rid of you.
He constantly denies that he’s falling for you and keeps telling himself that he needs you to finish this hunt.
Part of him truly believes this. That he can watch you walk away when it’s over and be perfectly fine.
That is until you nearly die saving him.
He’s pissed because he was “fine” and “didn’t need your help”
And how DARE you scare him like that! You could have been killed!
You say it doesn’t matter. He’s been trying to get rid of you since the two of you met.
He says it damn well matters because he loves you.

How he ended up with you?
He doesn’t know. All he knows is that his job is consuming his life. He feels like death. And you smell really nice…even with his dulled sense of smell.
You helped him save a Goyl child from drowning once, and he decided that you weren’t horrible.
He kept tabs on you and made sure you were safe and had everything you needed. You never knew for sure how the groceries ended up at your back door when you were low on money, but he knew when you needed them.
For a while, he kept his distance. You were a distraction that he didn’t need. Until one day he decided that maybe he did need that kind of distraction.
He slowly made his way into your life and befriended you until one thing led to another and he realized you meant more to him than that.
It wasn’t until one night when he came over for dinner and you were laughing hysterically while trying (and failing) to give the punchline to a joke that he let it slip.
“and this is why I love you.”
Nesser
Being the bodyguard to the King’s Bloodhound doesn’t really give you a lot of time off, but on those rare occasions where Nesser has a moment to herself, she likes to roam through the streets of Vena to the nearest coffee shop.
You already have her cup of black coffee waiting on her before she makes it fully to the counter.
She doesn’t tell you that the taste of the dark liquid makes her want to vomit. If she did, she’d have to find another reason to come here. Other than the fact that she thinks you’re the most gorgeous person ever.
Your shift ends, and you see her still sitting alone in the back corner booth. Her coffee cup is still full.
You ask if you can have a seat opposite her.
She knows she should say no. She doesn’t want to get close to you. To lose you the way she lost her sister. She can’t handle that kind of pain again.
But she can’t stop herself from nodding. It’s well into the night when she realizes that she has to be at work in a few hours. She doesn’t want to spend all of what’s left of her time with you here in this small shop. So, she asks if you would like to go for a walk.
You talk about your lives and where you’re from and how bright the stars are when you’re away from all the lights of Vena.
It’s been so long since she has been able to talk to anyone like this.
When it’s time to part, she can’t help but think how easy it would be to love you.

Who's birth chart is that, you may ask. Well it's ANDREW MINYARD'S and you're going to be surprised by the accuracy (No rising because no birth time sadly)
With a scorpio sun and a sun-venus conjunction, Andrew should be a suspicious, defiant, and sometimes extremist and violent person with a great sense of style who enjoys a certain amount of luxury, and is generally a fighter, a bundle of energy who would do well in a sports career because of the square between the sun and mars. He usually doesn't lie and keeps his promises since he has a trine between the sun and jupiter. Passionate in speech (Is your spine the spine of the righteous) , excellent at strategy and willing to take risks (his strategy in the game against the ravens holy shit putting neil as a backliner was a batshit crazy thing to do)
Venus in scorpio (so much scorpio in his chart I should have known), they tend to attract people with their intensity. The appeal lies in their focus and loyalty to one person, and I can almost guarantee there would be deep body and soul commitment and lots of sexual pleasure. Scorpio lovers are also very possesive and jealous, enough to force you to cut ties with people that "would take you away from them" (here is your proof that andrew minyard loves his brother) but you could be rewarded with deep intimacy, as they like to explore every single piece of your being. Lilith in Gemini, he tends to not flaunt his personality and intelligence, and can be wary of social butterflies. People with their lilith in gemini should learn self acceptance at all costs to keep going (like how he accepted his sexuality in juvie)
North node in aries, no wonder he's got so much goddamn trauma. Life teaches him many lessons including self-confidence, assertiveness and decisiveness

I originally had Percy as Sylvie’s daughter just because 1) I thought for some reason maybe that was a thing in the AU??? I think it was actually people going “haha swap!Sylvie would totally adopt swap!Percy on sight” but then like it turned into an ACTUAL thing in my head, and then 2) it provided a VERY good excuse to get the police into the museum in the museum arc because nobody ever calls the police or trips the fire alarm
but then by the time we hit this part, I was 1) in love with the Ashling-King family unit, and 2) thought that having Percy around really added motivation to Sylvie’s character, and also gave another dynamic to the bond between him and Zora, which is just (chefs kiss)
I had a split-second heart attack about “WAIT HOW DO I GET THE CUFFS OFF ZORA, SHE CAN’T HAVE HER ARM CHOPPED OFF BECAUSE I DON’T THINK SHE COULD REGROW THAT/EVEN IF SHE DID IT’D BE GRAPHIC, AND RAMSEY’S NOT EVEN TRYING TO CUT HER HE’S TRYING TO TURN HER TO GOLD—” before I remembered that gold is soft enough to bite through and I was like aw yes nevermind, I got this

I knew I wanted a plot twist of some kind during the final battle because people wouldn’t be expecting it, but nothing that would impact the story, and this ended up working perfectly

we decided (and by “we” I mean Mari) that since canon Zora hates kids, of course swap!Zora must LOVE them, hence her softening up around Sylvie a lot once she learns he has a daughter :’)
the hardest swap of the Museum arc was Mera and Indus because they were TOTAL OPPOSITES
the hardest swap of the Redwood arc was Ramsey and Zora because they were the EXACT SAME ENERGIES
again... I felt there was just a liiiiittle bit missing with canon Percy and Ramsey’s dynamic, and for me personally, this moment fills that missing bit in. but that’s just me and this IS my writing, so XD
so, just as a heads-up, apparently the people who did the audiobooks changed around some of these minor-character (well, “not-yet-revealed character”) swaps
and since they know the AC characters better than me, I’d proooooobably go ahead and use their swaps if this project ever did continue?? hypothetically??? basically these last bits are all still malleable

The Hero Billboard Chart and Gang Orca
Right you all know Kugo Sakamata aka Gang Orca?
In my opinion one of the coolest fucking heroes Hori has ever designed.
Yeah I need to rant about him for a bit. Bare with me here.
When we are introduced to him he is the number 10 hero. THE NUMBER 10 HERO. Keep this in mind.
He shows off his strength in the Provisional Hero License Exam, which he wouldn’t have most likely even been going full out on considering its still an exam, just a test, but it’s also shown he’s considered very trustworthy to shape the future generation as he was involved with those taking the remedial course like Shouto and Katsuki.
Overall he’s great and the fandom? Well we liked him! A lot! Hell I know some hardcore Gang Orca stans in this fandom.
He’s powerful, humorous, looks wicked cool and can also be serious when needed! All around a likable guy. No wonder lots of people in the fandom like him.
Unfortunately his popularity isn't exactly the same in canon. While he could likely have been relatively popular to have been ranked top 10 when we saw him, we also know from Hawks talking about Endeavor that your popularity rank does not have to match your actual ranking on the Hero Billboard Chart.
This along with the horrifying knowledge that he is ranked third among heroes who look like villains, which is a horrible ranking to even exist and shows how intolerant the MHA world is, could very well mean he wasn’t ranked very high on the popularity chart last time (and also this time around).
Why you may ask, is this important? He still ranked number 10 didn’t he? That has to speak for itself?
Well yeah he was ranked number 10.
Was being the word there.
When we got to the Hero Billboard Chart arc ,or more commonly bunched all together and referred to as the Pro Hero Arc, it is revealed, Gang Orca went down 2 ranks. To number 12.
Why would Hori push down a relatively well established Pro Hero the fandom already liked? The answer could be simply that he wanted to introduce more new characters, yet why do that when the MHA cast is already so large? We’ve already seen he’s had very little time to flesh out and develop any of the new characters introduced in the “New top 10“ except for Hawks.
(Who’s almost a main character at this point so he really doesn't count here. Hawks also was hinted at before with Tokoyami’s internship so he was already established pre the Billboard chart. None of the other new heroes got this.)
Miruko, Wash, Crust and Yoroi Musha that’s four more characters to add to an already large cast. God I love Rumi don’t get me wrong but out of all of these 4 she's the only one who’s gotten any time to herself since then!
We don’t care about Crust or Yoroi and while some of the fandom finds Wash amusing or puzzling (seriously he’s a straight up washing machine?? what?) that’s all there is to it.
It was made even more obvious this arc when what happened to Crust and (presumably) Wash happened and no one in the fandom cared??? There was just not enough time to flesh these characters out even the bare minimum.
So even though Hori might have liked these characters and might have wanted to do more with them, it would have been a smarter decision and could narratively have made sense to keep Gang Orca in the top 10.
Another reason Gang Orca should have stayed in the top 10? Here’s a direct quote from a reporter during the Hero Billboard Chart. “This time, those heroes involved with the Kamino incident have all seen their approval rating’s go up.”
Why does this involve Gang Orca? Because it's shown throughout this episode/chapter that everyone involved with Kamino saw a boost in both popularity and ranking.
We even know Kamui Woods gained a huge boost along with Mt Lady.
Who else do we know who was involved with Kamino? Oh that’s right.
Gang Orca.
Gang Orca should at least have been ranking higher then Yoroi Musha since the dude hasn’t been involved in any major take downs that we know of.
The argument of whether Ryukyu or Gang Orca should be higher can be made, due to the former being involved in the Shie Hassaikai raid/incident, however only specifically Kamino is pointed out by those in this episode/chapter so I would have put him in with a fair chance.
Now why do I think the Hero Billboard Chart is bullshit? Because I’m pretty fucking positive the Hero Commission fucks with the rankings. I also know I’m very much not the only one who thinks that.
Hawks sweetie for all I love you I find it a tad suspicious how quickly you rose in the ranks. Only a year and breaching the top 10?? Even if the HC’s marketing for him was on point (which that’s also them fucking with the rankings and showing high bias if that’s the case) I really doubt he should have broke top 10 that quickly.
Mt Lady was involved with Kamino, we can presume was a sidekick for a few years and is really well liked and she only became part of the top 20 at age 22/23.
Everyone in the top ten is over 25
Hawks would have been 18 when he breached it. Yeah I ain’t buying that shit.
Why would they have stepped in for Gang Orca? Well even if it wasn’t specifically them (though I doubt it), Gang Orca dropping out of the top 10 is pretty big to suggest more on the discrimination mutant quirked individuals face in the MHA society
In “MHA Heros Rising” one of the villains also blatantly states he became a monster because people already treated him like one.
We also know Spinner hates being referred to as Lizard and took great offense when Dabi did so.
That with all the other hints sprinkled in..
From what we know the HC has not stepped in to stop this at all.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the HC did in fact bring Gang Orca down out of the top 10 and used the end of All Might’s Era as a convenient excuse.
Again if anything due to being involved in Kamino the guy should have jumped up a rank not gone down 2.
Gang Orca I will say very happily is one of my favourite heroes. I’m quite biased to him. Yet looking this over again and again. I still do not understand why he would have dropped ranks like that in a way that makes sense in cannon except for having the ranks be fucked with.
Gang Orca deserved better than what Hori gave him. He is more liked than any of the new characters introduced except Miruko because of that we are very attached to him. He deserved to be top 10 and I will forever be salty about it.
Hopefully I got my point somewhat across? I admit I’m not very good at compiling my thoughts in a concise manner, hence the “Rambles” part of my name.

i said last night i would maybe write my reasonings for my placements on this chart over what i hc as each of my muses’ primary love languages, and so here i go! these will be in separate posts, each group categorized by their love language, because i decided trying to put thirty-seven paragraphs under a readmore still sounded like way too much. forgive me for a lack of showing in-game text evidence like i normally do, but i still reference specific conversations in most of these. it should be noted that i also believe love languages can be applied to platonic bonds in the same way they are to romantic ones, so i reference platonic interactions in these posts too.
first off is the quality time gang. i define it as these characters primarily express their affection or believe affection from others is most meaningful when people make time for one another, gives their undivided attention, etc. they cherish the act of simply being with those they are close to.
LENE - the two most important people to lene's life are her mother and ares. she constantly hunts for her mother, not caring or ever necessarily desiring words or gifts or saying precisely what she wants from her once she meets her (if ever); all that matters to lene is simply the act of being with the people she cares about. we can see this with ares as well. though lene exhibits open communication skills with ares, her reunion scene with ares has her downplaying verbal communication and emphasizing her desire for ares to never leave her. she never says in specific words what ares means to her, but she cares the world for him without putting a label to it.
TINE - tine canonically gets bashful when ced is straight forward with his verbal affection to her, making me less likely to think she cares about words of affirmation. instead, i look to her lovers convo with seliph where she, for the first time, is insistent about something instead of being reserved as a result of her harsh upbringing. what is it she is insistent about? following seliph into battle. she describes her ultimate fear of being separated from the person she loves and fully becoming another deirdre, implying her biggest security comes from being near the people she cares for.
DEIMNE - while i was tempted to say it was receiving gifts because he does appreciate corrine's necklace given to lend him strength, he seemed pretty oblivious in that scene to me? and he's never painted as giving gifts being the way he communicates his care either. so i look to his lovers convo with daisy, where he's pretty bleak, but when daisy suggests merely being with him without putting any explicit words of affection, he accepts it (as can be seen with their ending) but isn't explicit himself either.
RAIGH - raigh is a tsundere. i'm sorry. have you heard his jp voice acting in heroes. regardless, he's not open with showing his affection with words or touch as a result, and we know he doesn't understand people going out of their way to help ease his burdens or give him gifts as implied in his supports with sophia and hugh. to the end, he's awkward and wants to give the idea that he standoffish, but he puts emphasis on returning to the orphans post-war or we can the feeling how he lingers around sophia after warming up to her without saying as such, giving me the idea that the only way he doesn't feel uncomfortable expressing his affection is by making sure to make time for the people he cherishes.
THEA - in her supports with klein, she doesn't bother expressing her feelings or acting upon them until driven into a corner where she feels like if she doesn't explain herself, then klein will chase her out of his life. her way until then of showing that she loved him, aka her default i would assume, was to stay with him even if being in the same army as him inconvenienced her personally. she wants to stay close to the people she loves, and that's how she communicates her feelings, being unable to do so in other ways. we also see this in her a-support with alen, where if she develops feelings for him, she can't say outright she loves him but proposes she always stay near him; to her, quality time is love.
AMELIA - i would wager to say that the most explicitly romantic support amelia has is with franz ( i'm unsurprised by this given her other supports that aren't with ewan or ross also usually reference her interactions with franz ) and in those, the two use indirect means to confess their love to one another, choosing to hide it behind metaphors of being one another's swords and shields. in the end, the primary thing that is emphasized is that amelia will no longer be alone, which has me leaning towards quality time consequently.
EDWARD - he's one of the trickier ones honestly! i think a close, close second for edward would be words of affirmation because when he gets worried for micaiah, he consoles her through telling her how much he cares for and believes in her, but i ended up going for quality time because of how a big part in his arc is his desire to leave the army altogether. when he says this, he also talks of how he absolutely wants leonardo and micaiah to come with him and how he won't budge on that; combine that with how his a-support with kurthnaga is asking him not to slip away from him and how in edward's ending, he always makes sure to go out of his way to visit micaiah and maintain their friendship even if their life paths are different now, and all three of these things gives me cause to believe he values physically being there with those he is close with and making time for them.
FREYJA - freyja no longer trusts the affections of others courting her due to how they once ridiculed her for her appearance, which makes me believe she puts little to no stock anymore in people expressing their feelings for her via gifts, words, physical gestures, or even going out of their way to help her. even she doesn't quite understand why her two aides, triandra and plumeria, would do anything for her, and she ends book iv feeling mixed about how much acts of service can or cannot sway her. however, the one thing that she seems certain about is quality time. freyr, the one person she definitively cares for, refuses to spend as much time with her, and that's what sets off her despair in the first place. this is what affects her the most, implying quality time is important to her and the clearest way for one to express affection for her in her eyes.

How do you feel about Entrapta in She-Ra being canonically autistic?
I haven’t heard about it being canon, but I’m all for the headcanon! Entrapta and Scorpia are probably my two favorite characters from She-Ra, and two of my strongest autistic headcanons. (Though… honestly I can make an argument for almost every character being autistic, and at the very least hc Entrapta, Scorpia, Bow, Adora, Frosta, and Seahawk as autistic. Fight me.)
I’ve recently become aware that some people are NOT fans of how Entrapta is handled in the show. And, look, I’m not really all that involved in the fandom, so I can’t counter point by point, but the main argument I’ve seen is that Entrapta is evil/a villain without a complex and sympathetic reason for being so? So, I guess have some thoughts on why that argument doesn’t fly with me under the cut. (Spoilers for season 4.)
Okay, to start off with… I don’t know. I guess the fact that I see half the cast as autistic means that it doesn’t bother me to have some of the antagonists also be autistic, especially when, I mean, lets be real. Who in this show is actually unsympathetic? Shadow Weaver, maybe, and…. Horde Prime? I guess?? I have actually, literally said, “Poor Hordak,” unironically, at several points over the course of the show, so not even the primary antagonist for the first 4 seasons is totally unsympathetic. The people under his command certainly aren’t. Hell, Light Hope was literally actively trying to do something that would utterly destroy the planet, and even she isn’t portrayed as actually evil.
My point is, She-Ra is great about shades of gray. Good guys do bad things, bad guys can be great friends. It’s clear which side is in the right–I’m not going to say that the Horde is in any way righteous and noble–but that doesn’t mean that the characters themselves are pure good and pure evil. It’s not that simple. So I reject the first part of the argument, that Entrapta is evil/a villain. She joined the Horde. She helped Hordak’s conquest and may have gotten people killed–was at least willing to do so. The same can be said of Catra, Scorpia, Adora, Double Trouble, and every other named character from the Horde. Several of them have actually gloated about their victories in battle–about, we can assume, the people they’ve killed–where Entrapta is, at worst, indifferent to the potential victims of her work. The fact that these characters do, or have done, bad things doesn’t make them irredeemable.
As to her motivations? I’m honestly disappointed in how many times I’ve seen Entrapta’s motivations reduced to “she’s naive”/”she got tricked”/”she just likes science and doesn’t care about people.” Um??? Okay, I get that her motivations aren’t spelled out as clearly as Catra and Scorpia’s have been. She doesn’t show her hurt plainly. That’s… that’s kinda part of why I identify with her, folks. She has a flat affect. She doesn’t communicate well, verbally or nonverbally. She doesn’t get people, and she doesn’t always want to try. And she’s been abandoned. It might seem like it was way too easy for Catra to trick her into believing she’d been abandoned, but– people. Entrapta lived alone in a huge castle/city/fortress with a bunch of robots and THREE servants. That’s… That doesn’t just happen. How many times has Entrapta been abandoned before? How many people have turned their backs on her? How many people did she consider friends who betrayed her, walked out on her, or just turned out not to care as much as she did? Either her entire kingdom abandoned her or she left and only THREE people followed. It’s easy for her to believe the other princesses abandoned her, because to her, that is what social interaction is. It’s her thinking she belongs somewhere only to find out the other people were laughing at her behind her back.
Maybe she’s buried her head in the sand about the war. Maybe she should be more aware of what the Horde is and why it’s bad. But people have hurt her before, so she’s chosen to care about robots, about science, and about her projects rather than about people. So, yes, she joins the Horde. Unlike the princesses, they seem like they might actually value her–for her scientific prowess, if nothing else. Yes, she builds them weapons. Some part of her still wants to belong, and this is how she does that. (She’s certainly not going to belong, here or anywhere, by just being a fun and kind human being. She’s useful, and so she’s valued. As soon as she stops being useful, she’s going to be discarded. And she just so happens to enjoy figuring out First Ones tech, so it’s win-win, really.) And, no, she doesn’t particularly care about the people she’s going to hurt. Why should she? They never cared about her.
(I’m not saying that any of this was right, that Entrapta wasn’t a bad guy while she was with the Horde. But I am saying it’s reductivist to say her only motive was, ‘ooh, shiny,’ and that she’s just plain evil.)
Think about how many times Entrapta has gone quiet, pulled her mask down over her face, turned back to her work and ignored people talking to her, pleading with her, trying to be her friend. Think about Entrapta on Beast Island, giving into the apathy because if she’s here, she can’t be abandoned. She’s hurting, and she’s afraid to trust, and yes, that makes her moral compass skew more toward “I’m going to have fun and make myself valuable to these few people who kind of like me right now” than, like, valuing human life and other markers on the “good” scale. She’s squarely chaotic neutral on the alignment chart. But she cares about her friends, and she doesn’t want to cause senseless violence–she wants to warn Hordak about the portal thing, because if it’s not working properly it’s not going to help him.
Entrapta is an incredibly complex character–and an incredibly sympathetic one. You need to pay more attention to her than to people like Scorpia who monologue about their feelings, or like Catra and the Best Friend Squad who get so much screen time. But that doesn’t mean she’s a shallow character, or a harmful stereotype. There is so much about Entrapta that I identify with. Her loneliness, her pain, her enthusiasm for her special interests, her uncertainty, her longing to fit in, her self-imposed isolation, even her self-centeredness. She is flawed and sometimes misguided, but she is so real. If I’m willing to forgive Catra and Scorpia for leading the Horde’s armies and carrying out terrorist attacks, Double Trouble for spying and sabotage, Glimmer for activating the Heart of Etheria–and I am willing to forgive all of those things, because when it comes down to it, I just don’t believe any of them are fundamentally bad people–then I’m certainly not going to damn Entrapta for building weapons for the Horde. This show is about friendship, family, and forgiveness, and Entrapta is sorely in need of all three, and damn do I want to see her get that!
In the end, you can decide that Entrapta’s reasons for aligning herself with Hordak aren’t enough to outweigh the things she did to help him. That’s fair. You don’t need to love her, or even like her. But I take issue with the argument that she doesn’t have reasons for doing what she did. She is a great, well-written character, and as an autistic person, I love her so much.

Deku!
I know it’s been a while, but this ask was in response to a post I put out asking others to give me characters from HeroAca other than Hawks to stretch my character analysis skills to see what theories, predictions, or just interesting observations I find. Because this is outside the realm of my usual character subjects and my style may not be well known in this tag - I ramble and am long-winded, hence the cut to not be obnoxious to scroll past. As a manga reader I won’t add any information past the anime’s run so far if you’re curious and want to hear what I have to say.
Deku’s an interesting character to look at in the series because compared to the way we find out about literally every other character, we outright know what he’s thinking or what he’s doing or how he’s feeling, so any development we see from him we pretty much see it coming from a mile away. He’s an open book.
In contrast, not many fans were able to see how Aoyama may have been struggling with feelings of inadequacy over his abilities - particularly in the Sports Festival Arc; and this became obvious with the license exam in season 3, but the point goes that while many fans saw it coming, there were those who weren’t able to read between the lines and saw him as a two-dimensional joke character meant to fill up the class roster up to that point.
We don’t really have that level of mystery or uncertainty with Deku. As the main viewpoint into the series and the world Horikoshi is building, we’re basically experiencing everything that’s happening vicariously through Deku. Yet, it’s not like there’s no room for theories, specularization, or characterization with his character. I’ve already said I’m avoiding spoilers so theories and most speculation are out of the question as I can only vaguely hint that there’s some potentially neat thematic parallels beginning to be explored in part through him, but that’s about as many of the beans I can spill without dumping out the whole thing.
I had some neat stuff to talk about before I actually sat down and started writing this and realized so much of it was spoiler-y; but at least in way of my opinions on Deku, I haven’t actively rooted for the main anime protagonist like this in a while and his likeability is off the charts. That said, he’s not a stellar role model just yet, mainly due to his hero complex. We’ll see some of the nuance of this subject explored in the next season, but by and large Deku’s drive to save people can use some level-headed reigning in before he acts. There are many times where his action is completely appropriate and justified - almost always when there’s someone right in front of him that needs saving; and let me make it perfectly clear that the unyielding drive to help someone in distress is a positive quality through and through; but when he goes out of his way to break the rules and disregards the repercussions in order to save someone I’m kind of surprised he hasn’t gotten in much bigger trouble so far what with his history of it at this point. That’s all to say that he’s a loose canon in the series so far and needs more experience before he’s real top hero material.
However, I don’t think this lone wolf mentality is what Horikoshi is trying to glorify or endorse through the series. My guess is that the series as a whole is philosophically leaning towards the Good Samaritan principle. (I said I wasn’t theorizing, but I guess I’m a liar now.)
If you aren’t familiar with the story of the Good Samaritan, it’s a parable in the Bible Jesus told about doing the right thing in helping others, no matter who you or the other person is - even if under normal circumstances the person you’re helping would despise you. This story is so iconic that there’s a type of law named after it - The Good Samaritan Law. (And if you’re unfamiliar with it you should read it and the other parables in the Bible, they’re not just moral tales but might get you good points on an English/Literature essay if you reference them well.)
It differs from place to place and not all countries have them, but the principle is if you think someone is in immediate danger and you attempt to save them they can’t turn around and sue you for “wrongdoing.” For example, if you see a baby or an animal locked in a car on a hot day and you smash the windows to pull them out and get them cooled down, whoever owns that car can’t sue you for smashing their windows and damaging their car. There’s a lot more nuance and fine print, but that’s the basic idea. In many cases where this law exists it actually legally obligates the bystander to help. The hope is that these laws help reduce the Bystander Effect (really neat if you look it up, but also scary and very humbling) and encourage people to help those in imminent danger without fear of negative repercussions.
Something I didn’t quite realize until now is that with the advent of a superhuman society, the Good Samaritan Principle is largely done away with all the way across the globe. Even if people are in active, life-threatening danger, you can’t use your powers to step in unless you have a hero license or you risk getting in serious legal trouble. To an extent this is understandable in a precarious and delicate situation - just look at the precision called for in the second half of the Provisional License Exam; but it occurred to me that not only are everyday people discouraged from getting directly involved they’re actively penalized if they do! If a hero was already on the case or shows up while you stall for time it makes sense to not insert yourself and complicate matters - you wouldn’t get in the middle of a hostage negotiation, for instance. Yet, that’s not what we see reflected in the series. There’s an over-saturation of heroes to the general public so that there’s almost always a hero close by to swoop in which rarely ever leaves an opening for someone else to step in while a hero is on their way; and the problem with this is that it leads to an over-dependence on heroes to intervene in other’s lives instead of taking the responsibility into one’s own hands as a citizen of the community.
This has repercussions that are directly echoed across the series, even (and especially) up to date. If you’re not a hero, you’re supposed to step back and let a “professional” handle it. If there’s truly no “Good Samaritan” exception in the world of HeroAca then that really gives Deku a solid ideal to embody and work towards in his world. He outright inspired All Might at the beginning of the series because he demonstrated the Good Samaritan Principle when rescuing Bakugo.
“It doesn’t matter that he hates me and bullies me and steps on my dreams. It doesn’t matter that I’m not a hero and can’t even stand up for myself. It doesn’t even matter that I don’t have any kind of superpower to use in this situation. He’s in danger and if I don’t do something now he’ll die! I can’t let that happen, and I won’t let that happen!”
That’s literally the parable in a nutshell. He even gets reprimanded for it after the fact, but he certainly doesn’t apologize for it. Deku is the personification of the “hero’s heart.” It’s recklessly helping others when they need help, and the moment he recognizes that someone is lashing out in pain (a la Todoroki or Shinsou or even Bakugo) he instantly recognizes that even though they may be against him in the moment and that threat needs to be reigned in, they’re still as much in need of saving as someone falling from a building. While All Might deterred crime through threat of force, Deku is on track to deter them before they even get to that place at all, and his character is making a case of normalizing this mentality instead of drawing black and white lines in the sand and chasing the symptoms of the disease rather than the cause. (I’m literally having a big brain moment typing this, “All Might-y power” in one generation vs “Deku” as someone who might normally be worthless but only needs a nudge to become “Dekiru/ I-can-do-it!”)
It’s a theme resonating through the series about how heroism and villainy both have roots in the heart, and while there are threats that have to be dealt with in the immediate and physical, there’s still an emotional and psychological component that has not only gone unaddressed for too long but is directly responsible for the surge of villains in society. You can already see it in so many of the League of Villains’ members (and some of the more troubled heroes) - if someone had been there to reach out their hand and metaphorically save them when they personally needed it in their lives (“It’s okay, I’m here.”) then they probably never would have become bad guys in the first place.
When all’s said and done, I think that’s the point of Deku’s character in the story, why he’s the main character, and why he’s going to be the greatest hero in the world.
